Marengo-Union Library Plan aims to promote local Director Hanson retires food in McHenry County

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Director Mary Hanson will retire to Milwaukee after leading the Marengo-Union Library for the past nine years, which included a successful effort to move to a larger space.

Hanson’s retirement will allow her to spend more time with her husband, who has lived and worked in Milwaukee for the past five years. The library board began interviewing potential replacements during a special meeting Feb. 4.

Hanson said she plans to stay with the library until a new director completes the transition to the MarengoUnion area.

Expansion underscored Hanson’s tenure in Marengo during the past nine years.

With board backing, Hanson and the library’s staff successfully used $1.2 million

from their existing budget to acquire the former Miceli drapery plant at 19714 E. Grant Highway, Marengo, in 2011.

The new space is three times the library’s existing space at 200 S. State St. in downtown Marengo. Roughly $750,000 in renovations to the former plant began in January, and officials hope to move into the new home by mid-2014.

The library also added adult programming, upgraded its computer systems and developed computer classes for the public during Hanson’s tenure.

Hanson will assist the library board with interviews for the director position. She already narrowed the list to four candidates. The initial round of interviews will continue throughout February.

The library doesn’t yet have a timetable for naming a replacement, Hanson said.

jdallke@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Rich Brook, owner of Brook Farm in Harvard, doesn’t have a production problem. He has a supply problem.

An acre will yield him at least 1,000 dozen pieces of corn, but there isn’t an outlet for him to sell something of that quantity.

“I can go out and grow so much more food than I can sell directly,” he said. “Go out to the Woodstock farmers market and try to sell 1,000 dozen.”

Nationally, there is a growing demand from consumers to purchase locally produced food, and leaders in McHenry County agriculture believe they have a plan in place to deliver more county-grown food to area residents.

In 2011, the Agricultural Conservation Easement and Farmland Protection Commission in McHenry County

formed a task force to conduct a countywide local food assessment, and in October 2013 the report was adopted by the McHenry County Board.

The purpose was simple: How can leaders promote a successful local farm system in McHenry County and better provide residents with healthy, locally-grown food?

The plan, presented Thursday at McHenry County College, gave an analysis of the quantity of farms in the county, the demand for locally-grown food, and recommendations for the County Board and farmland advocates on how to make the area a better place to buy, grow and eat local food.

“There are producers here, but I wasn’t really aware that they were necessarily feeding the people here locally,” said Lenore Beyer-Clow, policy director for Openlands,

Employment rate drops for teens

The Woodstock High School senior remembers the uneasiness that came with her hunt for employment. She’d been clicking around online, typing her name into job search engines. She went to several interviews without a call back.

“I was 16 and so into wanting to get a job but not knowing what to do,” Gomez said.

It’s a feeling striking many high school teens lately. In Illinois, teen employment rates shrunk to 27 percent in 2012, down from 37 percent in 2006 – before the recession – according to a new report by the Chicago Alternative Schools Network. The numbers are even with the national decline.

“Employers are having such large numbers of people applying for jobs that a lot of times teens get shoved to the back of the priority list for others

who have more skills or experience,” said Barbara Billimack, lead youth career adviser at the McHenry County Workforce Network.

The tough conditions can be discouraging for youth, but Billimack encourages teens to be persistent.

For Gomez, taking that advice to heart paid off.

She entered the McHenry County Workforce Youth Program in June 2012, and learned interview skills and the intricacies of filling out applications.

And she gained the confidence to pick up applications in person, giving herself that initial chance to be noticed.

The result: “I got hooked up with a job a couple months later,” Gomez said.

She’s been working since at Jaci’s Cookies on the Woodstock Square.

The little touches Gomez used are huge in a job market flooded with applicants, said Anna Olas, human resource manager with the Crystal Lake Park District.

Olas, who manages a department that takes between 300 and 400 applications for seasonal summer work each year, said it’s all about how you present yourself to an employer, from your attire and confidence to the neatness of your application’s penmanship.

And being visible – presenting yourself, not sending a parent – is key.

“We want to see the applicants themselves,” Olas said. “We want to know that they’re interested in the job.”

Many of the Park District’s jobs are filled by returning employees, but the department has posted eight jobs so far and will post more as Memorial Day approaches, Olas said.

For those who try unsuccessfully to find summer work, Billimack suggests they continue bettering their resumes in other ways, entering clubs and pursuing volunteer opportunities.

“Things like that, so they can build those skills so they have something to talk about when they do have an interview,” she said.

a regional nonprofit organization that spearheaded the task force. “There is enough interest in [eating locally]. We really need to grab onto that interest and see how we can move it forward.”

The report found Illinois consumers spend $48 billion on food annually, but only 4 percent is generated from local food purchases, meaning the majority of food dollars leave the state.

When buying food directly from a farmer, 90 percent of those food dollars go back to the farm, which keeps the revenue in the community, the report found.

And in a survey of nearly 250 county residents, 50 percent of respondents said they do not know where the food they purchase is grown. Twothirds said they do not know if their grocer offers local food.

When asked how well local farms met their food needs, 60 percent said they were unsure, and 31 percent said there was shortage of local food.

The report concluded there was a growing demand for locally produced food, along with an increasing supply and availability for local food products.

“I think most people do their shopping at Jewel or a big retail outlet,” Beyer-Clow said. “So having [locally grown food] accessible at places people are used to buying it will make a big difference.”

This goes beyond farmers markets, Beyer-Clow added.

The report calls for promoting local food at McHenry County restaurants and advocating for more local food at schools and hospitals. And creating a food hub for area growers to combine their resources would further benefit smaller farms.

The task force acknowledged a significant barrier to getting people to eat locally is the cost. It’s often more expensive to shop at the farmers market than at Walmart. But local agricultural leaders are hoping the health benefits, the benefits to the local economy and the sense of community will push the local food movement ahead in McHenry County.

“You feel like part of a community,” Brook said.

“You’re helping the farmer.

And the farmer is just delighted. He’s gonna bust his rear to provide you the best stuff.”

Relief in sight for propane users

By JIM DALLKE jdallke@shawmedia.com After a propane shortage sent prices skyrocketing last month and left homeowners with heating bills two and three times higher than normal, relief may be on the way.

Last month, propane prices reached nearly $6 a gallon, up from the usual $1.50 a gallon, according to Conserv FS Energy Manager Brock Bentson.

“It’s very unusual,” Bentson said. “We’ve never seen anything this bad.”

But prices have started to come down recently, Bentson said, with propane now going for around $3.50 a gallon.

On Jan. 27, Gov. Pat Quinn declared a propane supply emergency in Illinois, which allowed propane truck drivers to travel to other states to fill their tanks, temporarily waived inspections of trucks that carry propane in order to speed up delivery and provided a $1,000 credit for households that took part in a program that helps low-income residents with energy bills.

Bentson said the combination of a wet fall season, which resulted in increased corn drying, a lack of propane inventory in the Midwest and the colder-than-normal winter were all factors in driving up the price of propane.

them,” he said.

Bentson, whose company Conserv FS supplies propane to roughly 800 McHenry County residents, said once the cold weather subsides, propane

prices should further come down to the normal price of $1.50 a gallon. But the possibility for extreme weather in the fall and again next winter could drive prices right back

up, he said.

“I think we have to plan for the potential for more severe weather,” he said. “We have to make sure the supply is going to be there.”

Community radio coming to Marengo

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – The volunteers who run the online Marengo Community Radio station will need support from residents to start broadcasting on their local FM dial.

After nearly a decade-long hiatus, the Federal Communications Commission recently granted the Marengo community station and others across the country construction permits to build the necessary equipment to start low-power FM stations.

The federal government’s

approval means the all-volunteer station in Marengo needs to raise $30,000 within the next 18 months to cover and construct the audio equipment necessary to start broadcasting locally at 94.3 FM. “It’s legitimacy,” said Executive Director Steve Sandman about the FCC permit. “We have to meet people where they consume their information. The FM station was the last part of the puzzle.”

Marengo resident Brian Kelly, who is president of the community radio nonprofit, started putting together that

puzzle six years ago when he wanted to create an news outlet exclusively focused on the Marengo area.

The group worked with officials from Marengo District 154 on a location for the radio operation. They ultimately started broadcasting online by late 2012 inside a classroom at Marengo High School.

The 24/7 Internet broadcast features a news program recapping the daily happenings in the rural town, along with programs from group sponsors like the Marengo United Methodist Church and the Marengo

Historical Society.

Once the radio transmitter and antenna are built, the station can start broadcasting those programs within a 25-mile radius from the school, Sandman said. The group will look to secure donations from individuals and businesses in the area.

Interested donors can visit the station’s website, www. marengoradio.info, and click on its PayPal account, Sandman said.

“The biggest challenge we have is to generate the additional funds.” he said.

group in nearby Huntley also has applied to the FCC for a construction permit.

The volunteers at Huntley Community Radio were recently informed that their application was acceptable.

They now wait 30 days before the final construction permit is awarded.

Executive Director Allen Pollack said he expects to have that go-ahead permit by March 10. The group would then have to raise roughly $75,000 to build the equipment and start broadcasting at their studio in Deicke Park, near downtown Huntley.
