Plows take to streets as winter weather begins

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com It’s just snow. Yes, we got a lot of it last year along with frigid cold, but in the end it’s still only flakes of frozen water.

Contrary to the hysterics of some 10 p.m. news anchors, it isn’t white death. Unless, of course, you live in Buffalo, which we don’t. The National Weather Service expected last week’s snowfall to total 2 to 5

inches in McHenry County, following the usual formula of totals increasing northward – a pittance compared to the 7 feet that recently socked parts of western New York.

County, municipal and township trucks hit the roads late Monday morning as the snow started falling, laying down salt while temperatures were still warm to keep snow from sticking.

“Right now, we’re laying down a bit of salt to make a

brine so we don’t get a situation where we get any snow pack or icing,” Woodstock Public Works Director Paul Ruscko said.

Last week’s snow was actually the third cold-weather event this year for the McHenry County Division of Transportation, Maintenance Superintendent Ed Markison said. Their trucks began hitting their 19 routes covering 550 lane miles the morning of Nov. 24.

It is one of several local agencies that had a hard time earlier this year acquiring road salt but made up the difference.

“We should be fine for this year. We have access to up to 10,000 tons, and that’s our usual,” Markison said.

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – A small school district in an unincorporated area near Marengo is thinking about becoming the latest district in McHenry County to offer full-day kindergarten.

Seeing a need for their youngest students to meet the state’s more stringent stan-

dards, officials from Riley District 18 are proposing to add one section of full-day kindergarten next school year.

The move wouldn’t require the district to add staff, but officials’ concern over classroom space limited the potential move to full-day kindergarten to one section, said Superintendent Jerry Trickett.

“We’re looking at all the

academic expectations of students going into first and second grades and making sure there is a readiness to address the new [state] standards,” Trickett said. “We would be enhancing their opportunities academically.”

Staff recently presented Riley school board members with a district study that examined the benefits and draw-

backs of full-day kindergarten and included parent and staff surveys on the issue.

Members will use the information and take a formal vote on adding one section of fullday kindergarten during their December meeting, Trickett said. If approved, the district would still offer a half-day

Turkey Testicle Festival a growing Huntley tradition

Bauer, who flew in to the area from Denver, Colo., for a relative’s wedding, finally attended the Turkey Testicle Festival at the Parkside Pub in Huntley Nov. 26 after years of hearing about the event from family members. Bauer said the festival exceeded her expectations and was the best way to spend her final day in the area before flying home on Thanksgiving.

Bauer was one of an expected 4,400 people to attend the annual event now in its 32nd year. By 3 p.m., hundreds had gathered in the outdoor tent area to listen to Suburban Cowboys, which was one of four acts for the event that also included Modern Day Romeos, Wish List and Too White Crew.

Janet Westberg, co-owner of Parkside Pub, said the event sells itself after three decades, but she still does a couple radio spots to spread the word as far as she can. She said it has been amazing to see it grow into a community tradition and is well worth the months of planning and coordinating.

“It’s a long three months of planning but it’s over in a blink of an eye,” Westberg

said. “It’s always a blast.”

The event is more than an opportunity for people to gather for beer, music and deep-fried turkey testicles.

The $10 admission price goes to nonprofits such as Opening Doors with Teagan and various youth athletic programs in the community.

Helping worthy causes is one reason Jon Fox has made the 80-minute drive from Lake

Bluff for seven years in a row.

“I originally heard about it from a friend of a friend, but it has become a tradition now,” Fox said. “They’ve definitely gotten better bands and more people out here over the years.”

Some of the attendance growth comes from people such as Roger Fyke, who said he finally was able to attend this year after years of hearing about the festival.

“The kids are old enough to watch themselves now so I figured I am going to drink anyway, I might as well go to something good,” the Arlington Heights resident said.

“It’s been better than what we thought.”

Marengo officials hear backlash on idea to add gambling at gas stations

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Aldermen will have more time to digest a proposal that would allow Marengo gas stations to operate video gaming machines, as some City Council members already have heard negative feedback on the idea.

A crowded December meeting agenda means the council likely will vote on the potential gambling expansion in January. The delay allows aldermen time to think about the proposal, after they were divided during an initial discussion on the issue earlier this month.

Mayor Don Lockhart and Alderman Matt Keenum, who said he opposes the idea, have heard negative opinions about it from constituents.

“I’m hearing a lot of people against it,” Lockhart said. “I’ll be frank.”

Aldermen started debating the idea of allowing gas stations to have video gaming machines after the owners of the Shell station at 302 E. Grant Highway approached the city about it.

The proposal would allow the Shell and other businesses that sell packaged liquors to be able to pour alcohol and serve customers on location.

The change would consequently make the businesses eligible for video gaming licenses with the Illinois Gaming Board.

City staff members so far haven’t even drafted an ordinance for the council since the Marengo police department needed more time to research how other communities have handled the unconventional video gaming idea.

Across the state, many convenience stores and gas stations that traditionally sell packaged liquors have been awarded gaming licenses as part of the truck stop criteria set by the state.

“I love to talk about trains with anyone that will listen,” Andrew said. “Sometimes I talk over their heads because of all my knowledge, but I can’t help myself.”

Andrew also loves to share train trivia.

“There are a couple facts that I bet people don’t know,” he said. “One, freight train operators work 12-hour shifts, and two, each freight and/or passenger train has their own unique train horn.”

Conservation district OKs equestrian-geared upgrades

A student generally learns more with a full-day kindergarten class. A full-day class can provide social benefits to kindergartners, and it also allows teachers more instructional time with their students.

But a full-day kindergarten program typically requires districts to add staff, classroom space and take on added costs.

Richmond-based Nippersink District 2 started a fullday kindergarten program last year, joining districts in areas such as Crystal Lake, Huntley,

Riders gave the trail a trial run earlier this year, not long after the project was announced, and they encountered few problem spots, Peters said.

Funding for the project will come from fundraising and grants.

The McHenry County Horse Club, which serves as the liaison between the horse community and the conservation district, has, in conjunction with the McHenry County Conservation Foundation, raised about $13,650 and more fundraising is planned for 2015, said Vern Scacci, president of the McHenry County Horse Club.

The goal is to raise between $20,000 and $25,000, he said.

The group also has applied for private grants and has asked the conservation district to apply for a Recreation Trail Program grant when the application period opens, Scacci said.

District 18 officials’ possible move toward full-day kindergarten may make classroom space tighter, but it shouldn’t add costs, Trickett said. The district would look to use its existing teacher staff to fulfill both half-day and full-day kindergarten programs.

The district’s current kindergarten classroom setup can accommodate both programs, Trickett said. If the district ultimately added two sections of full-day kindergarten, officials would likely have to move an upper elementary grade into a mobile classroom.

“Our biggest concern is the facilities, if the district starts to grow,” Trickett said.

For Christmas, I have a 4-foot tree that sits in the middle of my HO layout and it is decorated with all train ornaments.”

Andrew also is a big fan of Metra, which his dad takes to work, and Amtrak. Julie said her son’s morning ritual before arriving to school at Westlake Christian Academy in Grayslake, where Andrew is a sixth-grader, is to watch the commuter train pass by on Center Street.

“It’s kind of like his cup of coffee,” she said.

Andrew’s favorite destination for train-watching is the double diamond crossing

of Union Pacific and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe in Rochelle and the famous Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Andrew also has ridden trains at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, the National Railway Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the Cog Railway in New Hampshire up to the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains.

“One day, I would like to visit Powder River Basin in Wyoming to see the BNSF and UP coal trains,” Andrew said.

When he grows up, Andrew said he’d like to own or work in a train hobby shop.

“My parents think I should work for the actual railroad because I have so much knowledge and it’s such a great opportunity to see our beautiful country,” he said.

WOODSTOCK – Horseback riders could be traversing the multiuse trail at Brookdale Conservation Area outside Woodstock as early as next June.

The McHenry County Conservation District’s Board of Trustees unanimously OK’d moving ahead with the first phase of a project that would ultimately improve the trail, install a parking lot on Paulson Road and add other amenities such as a picnic area and restroom to the area.

The first phase, which is scheduled to be open to the public next June, includes establishing a temporary nonpaved parking lot that can accommodate horse trailers and small improvements to the 4.25-mile, cut-grass trail, cutting back brush and trees and adding an accessible horse ramp, Planning Manager Amy Peters said.

“We can see how how we like it and how many people use it,” Peters said.

The site has a “good footprint” for the use, she added, since there is already an entrance for vehicles cut in. There will need to be grading, though, to address water drainage.
