County votes Hobson to RTA board Lakewood businessman to fill position Jan. 1

kcraver@shawmedia.com WOODSTOCK – With little fanfare and no discussion, the McHenry County Board chose its next representative on the Regional Transportation Authority Board.

County Board members voted Tuesday morning, 220, to appoint Lakewood businessman Blake Hobson to the post effective Jan. 1. He will replace longtime GOP insider Al Jourdan, whose five-year term expired in April but has continued to serve until a replacement was named.

Hobson, who served on the County Board, Lakewood

Village and Nunda Township boards, co-owns Huntley-based manufacturing company Image Industries. He beat out nine other applicants for the $25,000-a-year job.

The 16-member RTA Board has financial oversight of the three Chicago mass-transit boards of Metra, Pace and the Chicago Transit Authority.

Jourdan was appointed as the county’s RTA representative in 2008. He spent 30 years as McHenry County Republican Party chairman between 1968 and 1998, and about three of those years as state chairman.

Jourdan’s RTA term expired in April, but the appointment process has been delayed twice because of political turmoil at the mass-transit agencies.

Inclusion aides provide students with one-on-one assistance

By JEFF ENGELHARDT jengelhardt@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Gwen Taylor knows the day comes once every two years, but it never gets easier for her when it finally arrives.

After spending two years sharing walks down the hallways, experiencing academic and social struggles and Gwen Taylor achievements Inclusion aide and learning a little more each day about each other and perspectives on life, it is always tough for Taylor to say goodbye to her student.

Taylor, an inclusion aide at Marlowe Middle School, is one of roughly 125 paraprofessionals in Huntley School District 158 dedicated to helping special-needs students on a one-on-one basis.

For two years, the aide helps with whatever is necessary, from talking with teachers to bridging communication gaps to helping organize a locker.

“It’s always hard, but you just have to trust you’ve done your job well,” Taylor said of

saying goodbye to each student she helps. “It’s been so fulfilling for me. I absolutely love it.

It even inspired my daughter to pursue a college degree as a special education teacher.”

Karen Alyward, director of special education for District 158, said inclusion aides have become vital to the program over the years. By law, there can be no more than eight special-needs students per teacher in a classroom, but Alyward said the district works to keep the ratio much lower to make sure individual students get the attention they need.

The aides can be especially helpful when it comes to helping the students integrate with the general education students and other teachers in courses such as physical education, art and music.

“In the real world, these students are going to have to interact with all different types of people,” Alyward said. “But that’s also why it is important we transition from one aide to another every two years or so.”

The bond between aide and student is one reason Sharon Peckham decided to transition to that role. Peckham, who served as a paraprofes-

sional in a recess and lunch supervisor role, decided to take the inclusion aide certification course a t M c H e n r y Sharon County College Peckham and has worked Inclusion aide in that capacity for the past seven years.

Peckham said each student she has served during her time has had different needs and formed different relationships with her, but it is a much closer bond than those experienced when she supervised dozens of students at one time.

“It’s a unique relationship for sure,” she said. “They all respond differently and there are always challenges, but the rewards definitely outweigh the struggles. I just love the kids.”

Despite employing roughly 125 inclusion aides in the district, Alyward said it is often a thankless and overlooked position as many people do not even know about the work of the aides.

“They are a huge piece of the large puzzle that is education,” Alyward said.

Huntley library names 2 directors

HUNTLEY – Two department heads from the Huntley Area Public Library will temporarily man the top librarian spot once Director Patrick McDonald left Dec. 3 for the private sector.

Public Services Director Rosie Lukas and Information Services Director Elizabeth Steffensen will serve as interim co-directors until the Huntley Library Board names a full-time replacement.

The board is expected to start initial interviews with a pool of applicants this week, said Leigh Ann Porsch, the library’s communications and development coordinator.

“They are looking for the right candidate so I don’t think they are going to make any quick decisions,” Porsch said.

In her current role, Lukas overseas staff tasked with selecting the library’s materials available to the public for checkout. Steffensen manages the library’s information desk and provides information technology support.

jdallke@shawmedia.com MARENGO – Northern Illinois University has turned to a Marengo dog breeder to find a replacement for Diesel, the soon-to-be retired Siberian husky mascot who has roamed Mission the NIU sidelines for the past nine years.

NIU is retiring Diesel at the end of the 2013 season to make way for Mission, a 2-year-old Siberian husky from Aliak Kennels in Marengo.

But Mission hasn’t always exhibited the athleticism he shows today.

Mission was purchased from Aliak Kennels as a puppy and it was later realized that his rear legs

were growing inward. Displeased with the look of the dog, the owner returned Mission back to Street.

After Street switched Mission’s food and sent him to physical therapy, Mission outgrew his leg issue and became the healthy, strapping dog seen today.

At first, overlooked for his perceived faults but eventually recognized for his accomplishments, Mis-

sion is the perfect representative of the NIU football team, Street said.

“He’s a stunning dog,” she said. “The important thing is that he represents the athletes. He’s willing to work and loves to learn.”

Mission was given to NIU by alumni John and Cassandra McKearn, who donated the money to NIU, which in turn will reimburse Aliak Kennels. Street

did not know the agreed upon figure but said show dogs like Mission – if he wasn’t neutered – range from $1,200 to $1,800.

Mission will still live in Marengo when he’s not on duty for football games or other campus events. NIU Army ROTC students will be Mission’s handlers when he is in DeKalb.

“They plan on using him quite a bit,” Street said. “He loves the college-age group.

He adores that age. He’s going to have a lot of fun with them.”

Mission is the second consecutive NIU mascot to hail from McHenry County.

Diesel, the retiring mascot, is from Harvard.

Union woman gives up her cats for a better life for all; animals available for adoption

jdallke@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The Pet Vet Animal Clinic in Huntley is purring a little louder this week.

A lot louder, actually.

On Dec. 2, Pet Vet brought in 22 cats that belonged to an elderly Union woman who was no longer able to take care of them because of her deteriorating health. The cats range in age from younger than a year to 22 years old, and most are in average to poor health, according to Cindy Gaffney, president of Animal Services and Assistance Programs.

Gaffney, who helped connect the cats’ owner with Pet Vet, said

the cats will be given health exams and are available for adoption or short-term foster. Gaffney also expects to find at least five more cats in the house. “[The owner’s] health conditions prevented her from properly taking care of the cats,” Gaffney said. “She was overwhelmed.

She was by herself and with her health issues, it became a health issue for the cats.”

Most of the cats are in need of some type of medical care ranging from blood work to a cat that may have a broken jaw, Gaffney said.

But most appear to have a kind temperament and are relaxing at the veterinary clinic, Gaffney said. ASAP is covering the costs

The cats’ owner, Kim Dalleska, 61, said it was bittersweet to have to say goodbye to the cats, but she knew this would be the best decision for her feline friends.

“I’m really sad about it. I’m going to miss them,” said Dalleska,

who has been hospitalized with pneumonia and blood clots. “[Gaffney] offered to take care of them, and I was really happy about that.

I know it’s the best for them.”

Dalleska said her kitten collection began when she took in a few strays more than 20 years ago.

“They were my babies,” she said. They’re all close to me in their own special way.”

Pet Vet practice manager Karen Larsen said the cats are resting in the back of the animal hospital, and she’s been enjoying the extra purring around the clinic.

“It’s kind of a rewarding sound,” Larsen said. “It means they feel comfortable in here. They are going to get a good home.”
