The Oct. 23 groundbreaking on the 128-bed acute care hospital was delayed because of a yearlong lawsuit filed by competitors Mercy Health System, Advocate Health Care and Sherman Health after the state board reversed two previous rejections of Centegra’s application. “During this three-year process, we remained confident that this hospital proj-

ect was in the best interest of the residents who call our community home,� Centegra’s chief executive officer, Mike Eesley, said in a news release.

The complaints filed by the three competitors contended that the ruling should be reversed because Department of Public Health staff said the proposal did not meet three of the state’s 20 standards, including there being a need in McHenry County for the proposed project and that it does not unnecessarily duplicate health care and clinical services in the area.

The state board disagreed with the staff assessment, determining that, with growth for the area estimated at 13 percent, the project would meet future need.

tegra has been moving ahead with the design and permitting processes.

Detailed designs presented to the Huntley Plan Commission show a five-story hospital with 100 surgical beds, an eight-bed intensive care unit, a full-service emergency department and a helipad for transporting critical-needs patients.

The system plans on breaking ground in the spring with the hospital opening still planned for 2016, Eesley said.

Before that can happen, though, Centegra needs final approval from the village of Huntley and to wrap up its final financing phase, said Susan Milford, Centegra’s senior vice president for strategy and development.

Centegra estimates the project will create 800 construction jobs and expects to hire 1,000 employees to staff the proposed Centegra Hospital – Huntley.

The local economic impact from the construction, salaries and the purchase of medical equipment and furnishing is estimated at $197 million, according to the release.

Mercy Health System has not decided whether it will appeal the decision, Mercy Vice 0RESIDENT 2ICHARD 'RUBER said.

Union’s Dominic Swanson sets lifting records at worlds Dominic Swanson encountered some obstacles at his first powerlifting international competition, but battled through to set five world records.

Swanson, a sophomore at Huntley, set the records in the 13- to 15-year-old 220-pound division Oct. 26 to 31 at the World Powerlifting Congress World Championships in Prague. He qualified at a national meet in Dearborn, Mich., in May and was invited to go to worlds as the youngest member of Team USA. He set records in bench press in both the individual event (275 pounds) and as part of the full powerlifting meet (265), squat (380), dead lift (418) and total lifts (1,063).

Swanson said the inter-

national judges had different standards, particularly on how low competitors had to stoop for the squat. That had a big impact, Swanson said. “On squat it can be huge,�

Swanson said of the different standard. “There you had to bury your squat.�

Officials also did not allow a lot of time between lifts.

Swanson is used to competitions that allow between 10 and 12 minutes between lifts.

At worlds, the he got between four and five minutes.

The challenge of the different judging standards was as much a mental as physical.

Swanson not only had to focus on his lifts but also had to compete under the new guidelines. “You learn a lot from it. It’s

not just about weights,� Swanson said. “You have to have perfect technique and form.

You have to be able to adjust to your judges.�

Swanson said he got the biggest charge and confidence boost after setting the dead lift record. “I never pulled that weight before,� Swanson said. “When I did it, it’s what pumped me up the most.�

Worlds gave Swanson a great deal of satisfaction and also the desire to continue training and competing. “I set all the records I wanted to set,� Swanson said. “It makes me want to go and do more big meets.�

Dominic Swanson said powerlifting has not only helped him get stronger, but has made him a better competitor in other sports. “It makes you more confident in yourself and in other sports,� Dominic Swanson said. “It helps me mentally with sports, especially with football.

McHenry County College celebrates Veterans Day

By LAWERENCE SYNETT cjpe\kk7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd CRYSTAL LAKE – Noah Currier had a simple message for those in attendance at the Veterans Day Ceremony at McHenry County College on Friday: Stay active and never look back.

The 31-year-old war veteran was the keynote speaker at the annual event that honors men and women who served in the military. The ceremony also highlighted the opening of the Student Veterans Resource Center at the Crystal Lake-based community college.

“We live in the greatest country on earth, and it’s the greatest country on earth for a reason,” said Currier, who is paralyzed from the neck down and uses a wheelchair. “Veterans are the ones who deserve most of the credit for that. Many things exist because of the sacrifice they have made.”

The Poplar Grove resident joined the Marines after high school in 2000 and originally was deployed to Kuwait. Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he was sent to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, and later Iraq as a platoon sergeant of a light armored reconnaissance battalion that led the way inland into the country as the war began.

“I was forced into a leadership role at a very young age,” Currier said. “No matter what, I tried to lead by example, and any one of us can do that, because it relates to all walks of life.”

Currier returned stateside in 2003 to Camp Pendleton, Calif., where his life changed in the blink of an eye.

Three days after his return, he and a fellow Marine were struck by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, their vehicle rolling about a dozen times into an embankment.

The crash left the Marine a quadriplegic.

Today, Currier is the founder and president of Oscar Mike, a Marengo company that sells American-made, military-themed T-shirts and apparel. A percentage of proceeds go to the Oscar Mike Founda-

“It’s kind of an ironic way of getting hurt, but it might have been a

Also speaking during the event was Ryan Blum, an Army veteran and president of the Military and Student Affairs Association at MCC. The 26-year-old served as an infantryman for one tour in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq, and was a member of the 10th Mountain Division and worked in various roles as a machine gunner, team leader and squad leader.

He plans to transfer from MCC after the spring semester and enroll at the American University of Paris, where he will study international and global politics.

“It’s important for people to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Blum said. “It’s nice to be thanked and see a genuine interest in our experiences.”

Recovering addicts learn from past drug use

By JOSEPH BUSTOS aYljkfj7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd During the summer before Chris Reed’s freshman year in high school, he wanted to socialize with members of a club hockey team and thought the only way to do so was to smoke marijuana and drink alcohol.

“It seemed like the social thing to do,” Reed said. “It seemed normal. It was fun. It wasn’t so much peer pressure.

It was they were having fun, and I wanted to do that too.”

Marijuana and alcohol use over the years led to relying on prescription painkillers and experimenting with Ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms.

He then also started using cocaine.

By his senior year in high school, the former Jacobs student had started using heroin.

As former addicts look back, they have learned that some people have genetic predispositions toward drug abuse, and that there are other ways to socialize without drug use.

As McHenry County and other suburban areas grapple with a growing heroin problem, former addicts have also learned there is hope and there is recovery.

Reed, now 23 and living in Fox River Grove, said he developed a need for alcohol or drugs to be social with his peers.

“No matter what we did, like see a movie … there was going to be drinking involved if we were going to have a good time,” Reed said.

He believed at the time that to be social, to have fun or even talk to girls, he needed to drink alcohol.

“I developed my skill set of dealing with life around drugs and alcohol, not around healthy ways of living,” Reed added.

Reed said he was caught up in an environment where drinking and using drugs was one of the only ways to have fun.

“I think a lot of kids who end up trying alcohol do so at

a young age and develop a reliance on it,” Reed said.

In 2009, there was a week where Reed overdosed multiple times and ended up in a psychiatric ward. Someone he knew then brought him to a 12step program.

He’s been sober ever since. s s s Steve Staley, 27, of Lake in the Hills, started using marijuana at 10 years old. Over time, it progressed to alcohol

use, taking pills and consuming psychedelic mushrooms, among other things.

He eventually got hooked on heroin when he was 17. He started doing things he swore he would never do, including stealing from his parents to support his drug habit and sticking needles into his arms.

Staley has a family history of drug and alcohol use and he said he thinks drug education is important.

“Let me know at 10-yearsold, ‘You have a predisposition to drugs and alcohol, if you do them, there is a good chance you develop a bigger problem than you ever thought was possible,’ ” Staley said. “That’s what I would tell my kids if I ever have kids.”

Two developers want to preserve Huntley mill

torical 19th century mill in downtown Huntley.

But Village Manager Dave Johnson said the responses don’t necessarily mean the mill, originally built in the late 1800s, would be redeveloped. The Village Board, he

said, will have to decide in the coming weeks on the future direction of the building, which local historians have been clamoring to save.

“No guarantees,” Johnson said. “The board needs to review and take a look at the

proposals. There are many different components to what we see in those proposals, so we are still researching and reviewing, and we will ultimately present it to the Village Board in the next couple of weeks.”

The village has explored redeveloping the mill, after officials acquired it last year for $115,000 as part of their ongoing effort to revitalize the look of downtown Huntley. A

Construction on the Route 47-Interstate 90 interchange, which opens Huntley’s southern boundaries to both eastbound and westbound interstate traffic, lasted 17 months, but the project’s groundwork began in the late 1990s at the urging of Huntley officials.

Marengo looks for formal Tollway commitment

Sass credited the late Carl Tomaso, a former village manager, for the vision that made the interchange a reality. Tomaso’s idea to have local groups secure funding and partner with larger statewide agencies ultimately allowed the interchange to be built, Sass said.

The Illinois Tollway Authority, Illinois Department of Transportation, McHenry and Kane counties and Huntley all contributed money to project, which came under budget at $59 million total.

Since construction started, the Tollway, which oversaw the project, has touted Huntley’s approach as the model for future interstate projects. The new interchange is the first project completed under the Tollway’s “Move Illinois� program, a $12 billion infrastructure overhaul spanning 15 years.

MARENGO – City officials this week will hand the Illinois Tollway Authority conceptual designs and other materials regarding a proposed interchange as they look to secure a formal commitment from the agency later this winter.

The Marengo City Council throughout this year has annexed thousands of acres within Riley Township to extend the city’s southern boundaries and take the formal lead in negotiating the estimated $60 million interchange at Route 23 and Interstate 90.

Huntley library director leaves post in December

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO j[`Y\e\[\kkf7j_Xnd\[`X%Zfd HUNTLEY – The top librarian at the Huntley Area Public Library is leaving in early December to become a chief operating officer at a private education group in the Chicago area.

Library Director Patrick McDonald said the decision to

leave a library that he has led for the past four years was a difficult one. His last day is Dec. 3.

“It’s a wonderful community. The staff is a joy to work with, and the board is a joy to work with,” McDonald said.

“Whoever is the next library director will be a lucky person.”

The Huntley Library Board, in a special meeting Monday,

The village ultimately extended its redevelopment proposal deadline to the end of October, after only a few developers expressed the desire to invest time and money to preserve the mill.

Entering the final week of the extended deadline, the village still had not received a formal proposal, but officials warned at the time that devel-

opers typically wait until the last minute to submit ideas.

The mill originally belonged to W.G. Sawyer and John Kelley, two local businessmen who were influential in developing Huntley during the 1800s.

After Huntley acquired the structure, local historians immediately lobbied village officials to preserve it upon hearing rumors that the village had plans to demolish the building.

Members of the Huntley Historic Preservation Commission have since been meeting with village officials to stay updated on the future direction of the mill.

overdose, he eventually went into an intensive outpatient program at Family Services and then met other people who showed him how to get sober.

Now, he works in construction alongside Reed. s s s Ryan Hagen, 23, of Lake in the Hills, started using drugs in eighth grade, but didn’t admit he had a problem until last year.

When Hagen was in high school, everyone in his group of friends was doing drugs.

“That’s what you felt like you needed to do to fit in,” Hagen said.

After he was addicted, his grades suffered and he was lucky to graduate.

“It got to the point where I felt like I had to do that to feel normal, to be comfortable around people,” Hagen said.

“Every day keeps getting said. “It’s taking it one day at better, as long as I get through a time.”

“The Tollway will have to make an initial decision on whether or not there is a project afoot here in the formal sense,” Boden said.

Marengo contracted HR Green, a McHenry engineering firm, earlier this summer to develop the designs and traffic study. The city also asked the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning to independently verify the work, Boden said.

The designs were meant to give the Tollway a sense of how a potential interchange would be built. The traffic study was intended to chart future demand an interchange would bring to the area.

The Tollway will use those materials in the coming months to do its own

After the ribbon was snipped, officials waved vehicles from local businesses near the interchange through the new western ramp with blackand-white racing flags.

Drivers from Dean Foods, Tom Peck Ford, General RV, Rohrer Corp., LDI Industries, LionHeart Engineering and FYH Bearings honked horns while passing through.

The new interchange includes six new ramps and a reconstructured Route

47 bridge. The old, eastbound-only interchange at Route 47 and I-90 was constructured in the early 1970s.

Huntley officials now will try to capitalize on the full-access interchange and attempt to draw manufacturers and industrial companies to area, as part of an effort to bolster the village’s business sector.

The village already has more than 300 acres zoned in the area for commercial and industrial use.

Tollway officials told Marengo earlier this spring that they needed to see conceptual designs by the end of the year to ensure they properly widen the Route 23 bridge over I-90 to accommodate a future interchange.

If the Tollway makes a formal commitment, the city then would look to negotiate with the Tollway, state transportation department and local governments, such as McHenry and DeKalb counties, on how to fund the project.

The city also may look to join with other local groups, but for now, officials are focused on securing a commitment to the project from the Tollway, Boden said.

“Right now, we don’t have a formal acknowledgment, not that we don’t anticipate one,” he said.

“It’s still a little premature to do that. I don’t want to sell something that I don’t have.”

Tollway officials then would decide whether to proceed with the project, Boden said.

The city is trying to meet with Tollway officials later this month to go over the decision-making process for the project. If the Tollway signs off, formal negotiations on funding the $60 million project could start by early next year, Boden said.

“We will get commitments on this, I expect, in the first quarter of next year,” Boden said.
