MARENGO – Kati Beck’s life changed by the end of the day Sept. 12, 2001.

Like many Americans, Beck struggled to pull herself away from the TV as she watched coverage of the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. After not leaving her house for two days, she knew what she had to do.

Despite a scholarship to attend the American Academy of Art, the aspiring artist put those plans on hold and joined the Air Force in 2001.

Beck served until 2009 when she medically retired.

Now the 31-year-old Marengo native serves as the president of the student veterans association at McHenry County College and is pursuing a career in political sociology to continue to help veterans. Shaw Media reporter Jeff Engelhardt talked to Beck about her decision to switch from art to the Air Force, her role at MCC and what she hopes to do for veterans in the future.

Engelhardt: So what inspired you to join the military?

Beck: I joined right after Sept. 11 because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. When I saw the planes hit the towers I couldn’t leave my house for two days. I was just stuck watching TV. I was an artist and I had never considered the military in my entire life.

It was kind of a spontaneous decision, but it was the best decision I ever made.

Engelhardt: What were some of the responsibilities you had during your time?

FAMILY: Two sons, 11 Beck: It is kind of difficult to describe in civilian terms, but it was sort of human resources and I was a linguist. I would work on things like a nuclear weapons insurance program.

And I also flew around when I was a linguist and would translate Korean to English.

I really loved the structure of it all and I loved supervising. I made rank very fast and was able to help and mentor the young airmen, which I loved. I would have stayed in for 30 years if I could have, but I medically retired.

started a few grant programs for veterans. ... And it is great to just connect with other veterans. It’s very frustrating for a lot of vets when they’re sitting in the classroom with some [of] these younger people and don’t see them acting the way they would expect in a classroom setting. Any deviation from that drives veterans nuts. So it’s nice to connect with each other.

Engelhardt: How has the transition to civilian life been?

Beck: I got my first civilian job working with veterans who had mental health or substance abuse issues, so it wasn’t much of a transition.

But I just recently switched jobs to a marketing position.

And now I’m having a little more difficulty. It’s just hard for me to think like a civilian again. It’s a different thought process.

Engelhardt: Is there any shortterm goal you would like to see the veterans association get to before you graduate?

Beck: I think the big thing is just to keep reaching out and finding more veterans.

A lot of times they like to go into hiding, but you can always spot a veteran by how they walk even if they are trying to blend in. There is just so much we can offer they might not even know about.

We’ll get calls from people looking to hire veterans, so it’s jobs other students don’t even know about.

Engelhardt: Has it helped getting involved with student veterans at MCC? Beck: MCC has come a long way in helping veterans and is extremely veteran-friendly.

The student veteran association has its own room now and that has been a really great benefit. They have also

Beck: I switched what I’m studying a few times and I settled on political sociology because I want to go into politics and help veterans as much as I can. I just want to try and improve things for them.

HUNTLEY – When Huntley residents take out the trash next year, they’ll do so at a cheaper monthly rate as part of a seven-year contract extension the village recently negotiated with its waste-hauling contractor.

Both the village and MDC Environmental Services agreed to lower monthly residential rates for waste hauling and recycling collection in 2015, beginning March 1. Rates would then increase annually, based on the cost of inflation.

Residents pay $20.25 and seniors pay $17.08 a month for the services. The totals drop next year to $18.75 for residents and $15.50 for seniors.

“Our intent was obviously to get rate relief for our residents, and we were able to come to terms on an agreement that works for both sides,” said Village Manager Dave Johnson.

Village Board members Nov. 6 unanimously approved the contract extension. The agreement, which excludes Sun City Huntley, was scheduled to expire in February.

Rates will slowly increase from the reduced amount after next year, according to the agreement.

Starting March 2016, annual rates would increase based on the cost of inflation. In year six of the deal, rates would remain flat before being tied again to inflation in the final year of the agreement.

The annual rate increases also are capped. In any year of the deal, the rate increase cannot exceed 3.5 percent but also cannot be less than 1 percent.

Young farmers sprouting up in Illinois

At 14, Renee Bauman of Union had established her own work routine on her family’s multi-generational dairy farm.

“Since then I’ve been milking every night by myself,” the now-18-year-old said. “After school, I come home, do night chores, the night milking, then do the barn chores – sweeping, feeding livestock, stuff like that.”

With a passion for such work ingrained in her since childhood, Bauman’s posthigh school plans involve a farm and industry short course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, then a trip back home to work on her family’s farm.

If her future pans out the way she sees it, Renee will become part of a growing group of farmers younger than 34 throughout Illinois.

While the number of farmers younger than 34 has dropped slightly across the country, the number of young farmers statewide rose more than 7 percent from 4,696 in 2007 to 5,067 in 2012, according to figures provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“It starts to makes sense when you think about seeing some of the older generation retire. ... And I think the new technology in agriculture tends to lend itself toward that younger generation,” said Obert, who also grew up on a family farm. “But the biggest challenge is going to be finances. If you didn’t have a tie into [farming] already, I don’t know how you’d get started.”

And the challenges young

farmers face could be affecting older farmers, USDA spokeswoman Wendy Wasserman said.

Farmers nationwide are older than they used to be – the average age is 58 after increasing from 50 across the past 30 years.

The latest census information for Illinois has the average age at 57 in 2007, up 17 percent across the past several decades.

Wasserman said the reasons farmers now continue to work for as long as they do are likely as varied as the farmers themselves. Part of it, she added, could be because of general demographic trends, while other reasoning could be linked to challenges such as

retirement issues and succession planning.

“Having enough money for retirement for older farmers is a problem,” she wrote in an email. “Getting young farmers the financial infrastructure they need – including capital, income, security and financial planning – is also tricky.”

While Bauman’s family farm is held through a family trust, making the prospective transition a little easier, Obert said other farms might not have that option.

For 77-year-old Vern Schiller of McHenry, ending a 50-year tenure as a beef cattle farmer also meant the end of the farm he’s managed for years. “Unfortunately, age came up and bit me in the heinie, and I realized I wasn’t 24 or 30 anymore,” Schiller said, adding he decided to retire and shut down Shamrock Beef Cattle Farm in McHenry while he and his wife were still in good health.

Neither he nor the farm owner sought out successors to take it over.

“No one would’ve done that in their right mind,” Schiller

said. “… If you have an operation and decide to go out of business and have an auction, the man coming in to take your place would have to have awfully deep pockets.”

He went on saying $1 million wouldn’t go very far for equipment alone, never mind buying farm land.

While federal programs and initiatives exist to help young farmers, inheriting equipment and land will definitely make things easier, Obert reiterated. Plus, she added growing up surrounded by farming can help prepare an up-and-comer for the extensive work associated with the industry.

“From a teacher’s perspective, those kids that have [farming] as their passion and it’s really in their hearts, we need them,” she said. “Those are the ones who have the interest and drive to go out, get the knowledge they need and bring that back into their own communities.”

The idea sums up Bauman’s feelings pretty well.

“It sounds weird, but growing up, I was drawn to the cows,” she said. “I work well with them, and it’s sort of what I gravitated to. ... As I got older, I knew I wanted to do this because there aren’t very many dairy farms around, and we need them.”

Another path to success

VFW to raise money for 2 wounded deputies

both elementary and intermediate in one semester instead of two, Hutchinson said.

An alternative also exists for students with learning disabilities who might need more time to get through the curriculum, she said. That option allows students to take a course across a year like they would in high school.

Staff members also are looking into providing other alternatives, said Gabriel Decio, an English instructor, adding he’d like to integrate reading and writing into one course and to explore adaptive learning where students would do more work outside the class and only meet once a week, something that work better for working students.

“We’re trying to lower the barriers, but our standards are high,” he said.

In January 2013, MCC also added Connect2 to its offerings.

The program is targeted at students who need developmental English and math,

McHENRY – A fundraiser at the McHenry VFW Post 4600 has been scheduled for two McHenry County sheriff’s deputies who were shot in the line of duty in October.

To help cover the medical expenses for Khalia Satkiewicz, who was shot in the leg, and Dwight Maness, who was shot in the back and femur, the officers’ friends, colleagues and community groups will raise money for their families with a Dec. 6 auction and raffle event.

Maness’ injuries have required three surgeries to this point.

The event, which will take place at 3002 W. Route 120 in McHenry, will include a silent auction, live auction, raffle and a cash bar with food. The event will start at 6 p.m. and the entry fee is $10 per person.

It is co-sponsored by the Iron Justice Motorcycle Club and McHenry County Police Charities.

Eric Decker, a spokesman with Iron Justice, said the organization knew right away it wanted to get involved to help the deputies any way it could. Decker said Maness was one of the founding members of Iron Justice, which is comprised mostly of sworn law enforcement officers.

“Everybody has been very supportive,” Decker said of planning for the event. “People are coming out of the proverbial woodwork to help us and it’s been great.”

The deputies were wounded after responding to a domestic incident early Oct. 16 at the Holiday Hills Home of Scott B. Peters, who allegedly fired more than a dozen shots at them. Peters faces

MCC tries new programs to help developmental education students

CRYSTAL LAKE – The test was definitely a challenge for Mallory Wlasiuk.

The McHenry West High School grad hadn’t taken a math class her senior year –most of the year was taken up by a work study program, where she built a bright pink truck with her dad – and so the placement test at McHenry County College was something of a shock.

She wasn’t surprised by the results, though.

“I’m not a math whiz,” said Wlasiuk, who hopes to take her marketing and advertising education to the Gary Lang car dealership where she has worked for the past three years.

She was placed – like many other community college students – in a developmental math class, one that refreshes what she was supposed to learn in high school so she can move into credit-earning college-level courses.

Nearly 70 percent of commu-

nity college students nationwide take at least one remedial class, according to the Community College Research Center at Columbia University. Another 40 percent of students at public four-year colleges need to take one of these courses.

But while developmental courses are extremely common – MCC offers 44 sections of developmental math compared to 43 sections of credit-earning, college level math – many students aren’t moving from those classes to getting a degree.

Only 28 percent of community college students who take a developmental education course go on to earn a degree within eight years compared to 43 percent of students who don’t have to take these courses, according the Community College Research Center’s 2014 report.

While McHenry County College doesn’t have the statistics on how successful its students are, it hopes to soon, said Adriane Hutchinson, who started as MCC’s dean of academic development two years ago.

That means the college doesn’t have concrete statistics on whether the programs it has implemented are working, but anecdotally, the news appears positive.

Emily Roller, an 18-year-old Huntley High School graduate in her first year at MCC, said the teachers really take the time to meet with students and the college provides plenty of tutoring opportunities at the Sage Learning Center.

Because she has special needs, she also receives free one-onone tutoring.

The college also has begun offering an eight-week format for the developmental classes, so students can get through

in McHenry County, she said, adding the fundraising done during the holidays allows the Salvation Army to operate throughout the rest of the year.

In addition to donating money on the way in and out of various stores, McHenry County residents, families and organizations also are encouraged to donate through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, a part of the organization’s toy drive.

Last year, West said the toy drive served more than 560 families and 1,500 children.

There are 29 Angel Tree sites, businesses or organizations that have chosen to take part in a toy drive. People can go to those sites to get tags – each tag represents a wish of a child – and to drop off the gifts for collection.

Families in need of Thanksgiving meals can apply now through Nov. 20 for meal boxes. To apply, eligible families can call the local Salvation Army corps office at 815-4552769 and have a form filled out.

It also builds in counseling and study time, according to a report on the program.

Of the 14 students who took the program last fall, 93 percent of them continued on at MCC in the spring compared to 85 percent of students who were in developmental English and math but not the Connect2 program, according to the report.

The Connect2 program also had a higher percentage of students passing the class, 93 percent versus 72 percent, the report said.

Pilot programs typically need to operate three to five years before their success can be evaluated, Hutchinson said.

“Now in education, data is everything,” she said. “The buzz word is data-driven planning.”

But the success rates in these classes are still lower than the general population’s, and that can be frustrating to teachers.

That’s something Decio hears a lot at conferences.

“The challenge of teaching that class [is that] the first part of the course, you spend more energy making the students feel comfortable and reassuring the student that they can

do it, that they can do it well because they can get very easily discouraged,” he said.

“They fail to see their potential. They might not be able to see that they have what it takes to succeed.”

Under the deal, both parties would have a new train platform and additional station parking constructed no later than late November 2015, meaning passenger train service in Huntley would start then.

The Huntley station would be located in the area bounded by Main Street to the north, Church Street to the east, Mill Street to the south and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the west.

“The stop in Huntley is an important part in the success of this route with the potential to provide commuters with

another travel option and create jobs and economic development in McHenry County,” IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said.

The state transportation department originally worked to revive passenger rail service between Chicago and Rockford in 2010, when the agency decided to bypass Huntley and place the proposed Amtrak route farther south.

But after years of fruitless negotiations with Canadian National Railway on the route, Gov. Pat Quinn decided earlier this spring to work with Union Pacific and place service along

its railroad tracks that cut through Huntley.

At the time of the announcement, Quinn said train service along the route would begin in 2015 with one daily round trip from a temporary station in Rockford to Chicago’s Union Station. State officials would then work to expand service the following year and eventually connect the new route west to Dubuque, Iowa.

Quinn’s decision to change direction on the Amtrak route even surprised Huntley officials, who first heard about the change through a news release.

The state potentially could change course again, depending on whether Republican Governor-elect Bruce Rauner wants to extend his campaign pledge to shake up Springfield to his predecessor’s passenger rail plans.

“The ongoing planning efforts on all of our projects are continuing and we anticipate sharing information about them during the transition process,” Tridgell said. “We are prepared to address any questions the new administration might have regarding the current status of our projects.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – It won’t be long before the iconic red kettles of the Salvation Army start appearing in front of various storefronts throughout McHenry County – a sign holiday giving has begun.

The Red Kettle Campaign, beginning Friday, is among the many holiday initiatives kicking off for the local branch, which this year has a total fundraising goal of $400,000.

So far, there are 46 sites

throughout McHenry County where kettles will be located for donations, all manned by volunteers.

Local Salvation Army spokeswoman Linda West said this year’s goal for the Red Kettle Campaign is $150,000 – no easy feat considering the donations are usually nickels and dimes.

“That is an amazing amount of money,” West said during a recent media event. “The money is coming from just pocket change.”
