After many trials and tests in 1983, Kosar, a 65-year-old Sun City Huntley resident, received a patent for being the first person to invent the insulated pizza delivery bag.

Later that year, she, along with a business partner, opened Thermal Bags by Ingrid to sell and market the new product that would help transform the pizza industry. In

Di Benedetto: How did the original invention happen?

Kosar: I was at a craft show, saw a little homemade lunch bag, and I thought I could make something that would work for keeping pizzas hot.

Nearly 75 companies take applications from potential employees

That was the long-true advice given by Evette Thompson, coordinator of career services at McHenry County College, during Friday’s biannual job fair.

Despite sinking unemployment rates in a post-recession era, Thompson said the challenges of

job searching still exist.

“I wouldn’t say it’s any easier.

It’s still difficult to find a job,” she said. “I think there’s more competition out there. An applicant has to know how to sell themselves.”

That was a concept well embraced by job seeker Norberto Martinez, who strolled from booth to booth with a friendly demeanor, a prompt handshake and a distinct all-white suit.

“You’ve got to stick out nowa-

days,” Martinez said. “If I wore a regular black suit with stripes, I’m just another Joe Schmo. So I wore something a little bit more unique.”

The 39-year-old Harvard resident had a job in customer service in 2007 but left for landscaping work that paid more at the time.

After years doing that, Martinez said he was at the fair looking to return to customer service.

“When the recession hit, we started to see a lot of job loss [in

landscaping],” Martinez said. “I’m hoping to get my foot in the door at a startup company and develop a little bit, professionally.”

He said he’s learned today’s world forces job seekers to not only know their skills but to also be flexible and eager to learn.

Area districts try to balance educator absences, development

By EMILY K. COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com The financial woes in Johnsburg’s District 12 have forced it to run a deficit, borrow to make ends meet and eliminate the equivalent of 14 full-time teaching and administrative positions.

The budget crunch, though, has had an unintended consequence.

A slashed budget for professional development may have made the district one of the few in McHenry County to have hardly any of its teachers miss more than 10 days in a school year.

McHenry County has the highest rate of teacher absenteeism in the collar counties and the 11th highest in the

state, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Education survey results. About 35 percent of teachers were out of the classroom at least 10 days during the 2011-12 school year compared to the state average of about 24 percent.

For student achievement, that level of absenteeism is the equivalent of having a brandnew teacher instead of one with two or three years of experience, according to a June 2014 report from the National Council on Teacher Quality, a think tank that pushes for reforms aimed at improving teacher effectiveness.

District 12 falls far below the county average with just less than 3 percent of teachers missing that much time.

“Anytime you can keep

your classroom teachers in the classroom, that’s a benefit,” District 12 Superintendent Dan Johnson said. “That’s pretty much universal. Teachers are talented people.”

McHenry District 15, on the other hand, reported about 61 percent of its teachers missed more than 10 days and that at one of its schools, Edgebrook Elementary School, more than 80 percent of teachers were out that much – although Mark Bertolozzi, the district’s chief financial officer, questioned the data’s accuracy.

“We don’t really know where the numbers are coming from,” he said, adding the district couldn’t replicate how those numbers would have been produced.

The data are hindered by

the fact 19 Illinois school districts did not submit information to the federal government.

None of those districts with missing data was in McHenry County.

After doing a little digging, District 15 concluded its teachers used an average of six sick days last year, including maternity leave and extended leaves taken under the Family and Medical Leave Act, Bertolozzi said.

That number, though, doesn’t include all the other reasons students could end up with a substitute teacher, including professional development, field trips, meetings or supervising testing.

Personal and sick days are laid out in teacher contracts and are pretty similar across

McHenry County districts.

District 15 teachers accumulate 12 sick days a year plus four personal days compared with District 12, which doles out 13 sick days and four personal days.

Full-time Nippersink District 2 teachers earn 15 or 10 sick days each year – depending on when they joined the district – plus two personal days. Richmond Burton Community High School District 157 teachers get 14 sick days and two personal days.

Harvard’s District 50 also gives its teachers 14 sick days and two personal days, but its contract also lays out that teachers get one day for professional development.

Telemedicine program to expand psychiatry services McHENRY – The use of new technology by Pioneer Center for Human Services is expected to help expand psychiatric care for McHenry County patients like never before.

Enabled by funding from the McHenry County Mental Health Board, the county’s first telepsychiatry program will soon launch at Pioneer Center.

“Basically, it uses a computer screen and camera,” the center’s organizational advancement director Susan Krause said.

She explained the yearlong pilot program will use screens, microphones and encrypted video conferencing to connect clients, psychiatrists and other health care professionals for virtual sessions – a solution of sorts to an ongoing need for more psychiatric services in the county.

Krause said the center at this point is waiting only on hiring a nurse to oversee the program, but the hope is to launch patient care “in the near future.”

Kosar: I started experimenting with samples – different materials, different insulation. At the time, I used Thinsulate. It was the hot, new product back in the ’80s, and I started sewing. I would get some boxes, two pizzas, make a bag to fit it and do a test. We

Krause echoed the thought, adding that the center is continuously recruiting psychiatrists for the county, but competition with larger, more urban areas makes retention challenging.

The program will be geared contacted Domino’s, and they said we need a bag that holds a pizza over 140 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. That was my parameter. When I got that, I was so excited, but I didn’t have the money that you needed for a business. I called a guy that I knew who made pizza boxes. We became partners and incorporated at the end of November 1983. That’s when it all started.

Di Benedetto: How many trials did you have to go through?

Kosar: My neighbors loved me. I would do test after test.

The more vegetables and toppings on the pizza, it is going to be easier to keep it hot.

The roughest test is the plain cheese pizza, small. That’s what we did for Domino’s. We

[Domino’s] had some bags, but they weren’t insulated. It was more of a wrap. They didn’t really keep the food hot. When we brought out [the product], they really liked it. They were really nice bags, so we sold them.

Di Benedetto: Back in 1983, did you think this product would be used so widely?

Kosar: I knew there was a market, but I didn’t know how big. We put a lot of our competitors in business because I made every mistake, every mistake in marketing.

up. He took his product, and I took mine. He was a source of information for me. Basically, I’ve been running it on my own, and you learn the hard way. That’s how you learn the best.

Di Benedetto: Looking back on it, what do you think of what you created?

Kosar: Even though I made a lot of mistakes, when you start a business, you run it the way you feel is best. I always felt be kind to your staff because they are working with you. I see these businesses, and it’s all about the bottom line. It’s never been that way for me. It’s more like a family to me. It’s never been easy, but you have that yearning for your own business.

Di Benedetto: What are people’s reaction when you tell them you invented the pizza delivery bag?

Kosar: Some people think it’s funny but most people have a lot of respect for it. It’s not necessarily for the product but the process – going after something you believe in.

Di Benedetto: When you order a pizza, do you mention how you invented the pizza delivery bag to delivery people?

Kosar: No, but a lot of times, we will pick up, and they will have our own bags. When we do deliver, I always check out whose bag it is that they are delivering it in. It always feels good when it’s mine. If my friends are over, I’ll say, “I made that bag. You want to see?” They get to see it. It’s kind of cool.

“This will improve access, definitely,” she said, adding there’s a scarcity of local expertise to deal with the target population. “Individuals with developmental disabilities and mental illness often have to travel very far away to access services – sometimes

up to three hours. This way, we’re bringing psychiatry to the population.”

Through InSight Telepsychiatry, one of the nation’s largest telepsychiatry service providers, Pioneer Center has contracted a physician with such expertise.

The program will enable the Schaumburg-based psychiatrist, through secure video conference sessions, to meet with clients miles away in a room at Pioneer Center, 4100 Veterans Parkway in McHenry.

“The client is on one end and the psychiatrist is at the other end,” Krause said.

“And they can be anywhere.

Ours is in Schaumburg, but it wouldn’t be unusual for one to be in New York or California.”

The program aims to include 100 participants and focus on improving their health and reducing reliance on psychotropic medicines.

The $106,000 grant covers one year of the program, and Krause said the hope is to continue it into the future by showing the program’s effect.

A huge upgrade in terms of size, the 58,400-square-foot building in Huntley dwarfs the firm’s former 11,000-square-foot facility.

“We are packed in this building,” Butler said, referring to the Hoffman Estates facility. “We can’t fit another thing in here.”

The move, which will likely take a couple weeks, will not only allow for a little breathing room but also will provide space for manufacturing, which the former headquarters facility did not have, Butler said.

“And it’s got two stories from an office standpoint,” he said. “Basically, we couldn’t ask for a more perfect setup with such minimal buildout or change on our part.”

Aside from a few knocked out walls, Butler said the building remains unchanged.

In 2013, Life Spine saw about $28 million in sales and Butler estimated a growth rate of about 24 percent this year.

Apart from potential expansion, although, the CEO said the proximity to Interstate 90 and easy access to Chicago and larger airports made the location especially advantageous.

The arrangement is equally appealing for the village of Huntley, business development coordinator Margo Griffin said, adding the Quality Drive building has stood vacant since 2000.

“We’ve been working with [Life Spine] since early [era] as we’re calling it, I’m hoping for 200, maybe 300 people,” she said.

Recent figures from the Illinois Department of Employment and the U.S. Department of Labor indicate more people than last year are employed.

“Over the last couple of years, we made a very strong effort to provide professional development in-house, and we try to make those after school and during the summer,” Clow said, adding that sometimes, though, teachers need specialized programs that they can only get during the school day.

Providing quality in-house training also can be pricey.

An autism training District 50 put on in August was “not an inexpensive training,” Clow said, but the district was able to defray some of its costs by offering the training to other districts’ teachers.

The strategy isn’t uncommon.

District 12 and District 15 are trying to do more training in-house as well as limiting costs and teacher absenteeism by sending one teacher to a program instead of a whole department. That teacher can then train others.

“It really comes down to the dollars and cents,” Johnson said, adding the district has had to rethink how it does things.

“I don’t think we’re shortchanging anything,” he said.

“There’s always extras that we’d love to get, but we’ve managed to get those trainings through a different method.”

Three years ago, District

15 negotiated a longer day on Wednesdays with its teachers union, Assistant Superintendent Josh Reitz said. The lion’s share of professional development occurs on those days, rotating through curriculum, technology, Common Core discussions and assessments. Some days are given over to collaborative support teams.

“Staff development is really a priority in our district, and we see it as something we owe our parents and the community,” he said. “There’s a lot of issues going on, and we’re making sure we stay on top of them.”

Bertolozzi said he thinks the district does a good job balancing the two needs.

District 157 also offers training during the school day, before or after school and during the summer, Superintendent Dan Oest said in an email.

The district falls right below District 15 on the rankings with about 56 percent of its 50 or so teachers missing more than 10 days during the 2011-12 school year. Its sister district – Nippersink District 2 shares the same superintendent and much of its district staff – reported about 43 percent of its teachers missing at least that many days.

“Certainly, having the teacher in the classroom as much as possible is the most desirable,” Oest said in the email. “Unfortunately, many of the professional development opportunities presented to teachers occur during the school day. ... The demands associated with reshaping instruction in response to the new state standards, new state assessments and the rapidly changing world of technology require training time from our educators in order to improve the instructional program.”

said the potentially brighter employment outlook was still apparent to her.

“Getting in here today was good because I can see there’s a lot of things out there,” Ryan said.

Coming from a six-year, jack-of-all-trades position, she said she’s looking for a professional-level job specific to the Crystal Lake area.

“If I don’t end up finding something, I’d be more likely to start my own business,”

Ryan said. “But it seems there are things out there. I think if you need a job, I think there’s a job to have.

“I don’t think that was true a few years ago. There’s a lot more out there now.”

After every fair, Thompson follows up with companies to track how many interviews and hires resulted.

She said the past couple fairs have garnered between 50 to 150 interviews and 25 to 40 hires.
