HUNTLEY – They’re hearing interest from businesses in downtown Huntley, yet village officials are waiting for more owners to apply for a new village program meant to jumpstart the downtown overhaul.

Trustees created in June the facade improvement program that allows downtown business owners to receive a 50 percent matching grant from the village for exterior improvements to their properties. Officials committed $50,000 in the 2014 budget for the new program.

Last week, trustees endorsed the first applicant for a window replacement project totaling $15,850. But the application represents the village’s only one under the program, despite officials receiving several calls from interested owners, Development Services Director Charles Nordman said.

“It would be nice to have more applications. But at the same, given the feedback and phone calls that we are getting, it’s good,” Nordman said. “I would expect, come next spring, we will have a few more applications.”

Before trustees created the program, village staff met with

downtown business owners and explained the proposal.

They also provided owners with materials and information on how to apply, once the program was approved.

The facade program would help downtown business owners cover the costs of numerous outside renovations, including roofing, landscaping and awning work. The village matches 50 percent of the total project costs, up to $10,000, under the program.

The new program helped officials cap off a busy year of downtown activity. Initially planned in 2010, the downtown overhaul would upgrade and refurbish

numerous pieces to the historic downtown, including properties, parking and landscaping.

The first program applicant, owner Paul Godlewski, will now receive $7,925 in village funds for his $15,850 window replacement project. Godlewski owns property at 11021-11023 Woodstock St. and operates a real estate management company on the second floor.

He also leases space to Century 21 New Heritage and the Louis Meyer Foundation, according to village documents.

He will replace nine residential-grade windows, originally installed in the 1980s, according to his application.

Sheriff’s candidates share views Marengo

In a meeting with the Northwest Herald’s Editorial Board this week, Bill Prim and Jim Harrison each laid out their respective plans to change the direction of the office – an office that will see its first new sheriff in 17 years.

Republican candidate Bill Prim has focused his campaign on a plan to expand a sheriff’s office volunteer base to help with security at events, traffic detail or in the event of a natural disaster.

He said its benefits are threefold: to engage the community, build trust and improve the office’s image.

“I’ve said from the beginning, the biggest resource that goes untapped in this county is its residents,” said Prim, a retired Des Plaines police commander.

MARENGO – The remaining Marengo residents who haven’t scheduled an appointment to replace old, in-home city water meters will face escalating fines starting in November.

The Marengo City Council recently opted to give the few hundred holdouts on the citywide project a one-month grace period in October to schedule an installation appointment without any consequences.

If a resident holds out beyond October, they would face a $20 a month fine for the next three months. The penalty then increases to $40 a month after February.

By May, if a resident still hasn’t replaced the in-home water meter, city officials then could shut off the water supply, under the meter ordinance council members unanimously approved.

She fears strangers coughing in church and first-graders with strep throat – anything that could threaten her 6-yearold son’s immune system, already weakened from a threeyear fight against cancer.

After about six weeks of feverishness and inexplicable pain, plus trips to four different Chicago-area hospitals, Sean Keller was diagnosed Aug. 18, 2011, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“That wasn’t even a possibility for us,” his mom said.

“We were shaken to our core.

How could he get cancer?”

The rhetorical question, still largely unanswered, came in September, which has been designated to focus on childhood cancer awareness.

Pediatric cancer is far less prevalent than adult cancer, making up less than 1 percent of all annual cancer diagnoses.

However, it still leads the way in disease-related death among youths ages 1 to 19 years old.

More than 15,700 children and adolescents in 2014 will be diagnosed with cancer, and 1,960 will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society.

The statistics for breast cancer alone – one of the most common among adults, according to the National Cancer Institute – show a sharp comparison as 235,000 new cases and 40,000 deaths are expected throughout 2014.

Given the stark difference in cancer prevalence between adults and children, there’s a large disparity in awareness, Robert Arceci said.

Arceci chairs an advisory committee at California-based St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a childhood cancer research charity, and is a director of Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

I want to know what we’re doing across the nation.”

With wider-spread awareness could come more research funding and treatment, Arceci said.

The National Cancer Institute spent a total of $5 billion in 2012, but only $208 million – about 4 percent – went toward childhood cancer research, according to information from the institute’s finance office.

Treatment options also have been limited.

While several new drugs for adult cancer have been developed in the past 20 years, Arceci said less than a handful have been approved for use on kids.

“We’re always looking for drugs that never get to us because there’s very little profit margin for childhood cancer,” he said.

An effort to address that particular issue has been put forth over the past few years through the Create Hope Act. Under the act, signed in 2012 by President Barack Obama, pharmaceutical companies that develop drugs for diseases like childhood cancer are granted a voucher to help expedite the review of any other drug submitted for approval.

While it’s too early to tell how effective the act will be, Arceci said there has been long-term progress in the area of survival rates, at least for certain cancer types.

The National Cancer Institute indicates 80 percent of children survive cancer at least five years after diagnoses, up from 50 percent a few decades ago.

The outlook is brighter for cancers like Sean’s, which has a 90 percent or higher survival rate, up from 10 percent in the 1960s.

However, for most child survivors of cancer, it’s not as simple as crossing a finish line into remission, Arceci said. “[Kids] have long lives ahead of them,” he said. “The secondary effects of chemotherapy can be trivial in adults, but they’re often humongous for children.”

A majority – 60 percent to 90 percent – of child cancer survivors will develop one or more chronic health issues from treatment. A wider range of survivors – from 20 percent to 80 percent – will suffer life-threatening complications during adulthood, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Keller reiterated, saying Sean is on track to finish treatment next month. So daily chemo, monthly steroids and trimonthly spinal taps will be done, but it still won’t be the end of their nightmare.

Like many others faced with the disease, Keller calls it a daily fight – fight to maintain what health is had and a fight for any shred of normalcy.

“Definitely, relationships have changed,” she said. “People just don’t know what to say, what to ask.”

Few would disagree pediatric cancer is a horrible burden to bear, but both Keller and Arceci acknowledged it’s hard to relate to the issue without being engulfed by it.

“I think that in some ways, people – not because they don’t want to – they can’t appreciate what it must be like to have your child diagnosed with cancer,” Arceci said. “It’s life-changing.”

By ALLISON GOODRICH agoodrich@shawmedia.com HAMPSHIRE – When Laure Hempe of Lake Zurich read the news of 75 abandoned horses in need of adoption, she knew she had to do something.

“I saw the article in the Northwest Herald, printed it and went running around, showing people, telling people we had to do something,” Hempe said. “I thought, ‘What can I do?’”

The care of 75 quarter horses, now located in Hampshire, was recently taken over by two area animal rescue organizations, Barrington-based Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society and Hands and Hooves of Chicago.

er fell on difficult times, lost the family farm in Harvard, and was unable to maintain the horses’ care. Before the two organizations teamed up for a rescue mission, the horses had spent the past two years exposed to harsh weather, surrounded by excess manure and without any human handling for a majority of that time.

President of the Barrington-based organization Donna Ewing recently called upon members of the horse-loving community for help in finding each of the 75 horses a home. In a week, the response has been overwhelming, Ewing said.

“We have gotten way over 100 applications [to adopt] from all over the United States and Canada,” she said, adding there are about 25

horses remaining to adopt.

“It’s so rewarding to know that there are people out there who care.”

Ewing said the reason Hooved Animal Rescue and Protection Society got involved was to ensure the horses got a second chance.

“There’s nothing I despise more than slaughterhouses,” she said. “I couldn’t stand the thought of that. That’s why we got involved, why we’ve been working day and night, to avoid that for these wonderful creatures.”

Hempe, who has had horses in her life for 50 years, since she was 10, adopted one of the remaining horses Wednesday.

She described the 6-yearold Mr. Recognized – she plans to call him Mr. R – as red with a white star in the middle of his face, and four

tiny white anklet stripes.

“He’s very intelligent and very inquisitive,” Hempe said.

It’s Hempe’s hope Mr. R will be able to be trained as a show horse, but even if that doesn’t pan out, she said he will have a good home and care from now on.

“I know it takes money to keep them and they take a lot of time,” she said, “but they’re so worth it. ... There’s nothing like it.”

Ewing said the rescue mission put a hold on adoption application forms while they go through the multiple applications they already have received.

“You have to look at ways to redeploy your services,” he continued. “ ... In the end you’ll have to figure out a way to shrink your services.

But you can’t have a plan until you have the actual numbers.”

Both men are competing to fill a role held by Sheriff Keith Nygren, who opted to retire instead of seeking a fifth term.

Prim narrowly beat Nygren’s preferred successor, Undersheriff Andrew Zinke, in the spring primary. The general election is Nov. 4.
