Divorce lawyer fears for safety after office fire Arson may be cause of Marengo blaze

jengelhardt@shawmedia.com MARENGO – A mysterious Christmas night fire that destroyed a Marengo divorce lawyer’s office has the attorney searching for answers and safety as she suspects a possible arson.

It has been nearly a week since Paula Rieghns was called to her office at 10:30 p.m. Christmas night to see a fire had destroyed everything in her suite at 821 E. Grant St. Fire and police

officials have yet to make a determination on the cause of the fire.

Rieghns, who has been staying with a friend because of safety concerns, believes her office might have been firebombed by someone unhappy over divorce proceedings. Both Rieghns and her attorney Bob Wagner, a former Crystal Lake mayor, said they overheard discussions of a gas can being recovered at the scene.

Out of the six units connected in the strip mall, Rieghns’ office was the only one affected by the fire.

“People get very angry about their divorces. I’ve

been threatened in the past,” Rieghns said. “My employees are scared, my clients are scared and I’m scared. I want this person caught. I want them brought to justice.”

Rieghns said she has been frustrated with the lack of progress in the investigation. She said the Marengo Police Department did not return her calls on the Friday after the fire, and the first time she was contacted by the police since the incident was Monday. She said they said they were still without answers.

The blistering start to winter that has blanketed the area with snow and frigid temperatures means business is booming for Rick Pasturczak.

Customers have flocked early and often to his Alpine Accessories store in Lake in the Hills for winter jackets, gear and even battery-heated gloves and boots to combat the early start to winter.

If the winter pattern continues, Alpine Accessories will benefit greatly after enduring milder winters in recent years, said Pasturczak, who owns the winter apparel shop.

“If we continue to have snow and cold weather after the holidays, business will pick up,” he said. “No doubt about it.”

The winter weather that brought 8 to 11 inches of snow to McHenry County earlier this week and recent subfreezing temperatures is expected to continue throughout January, according to the National Weather Service.

Chicago-area residents can anticipate below average temperatures and sporadic winter storms in January, said NWS meteorologist David Beachler.

The area typically sees temperatures top at 31 degrees for the month.

Continued winter storms would only add to the massive snowfall totals to hit the Chicago area.

The National Weather Service’s official reading site – O’Hare International Airport – has seen 22.1 inches of snow since Dec. 1. That total is 13.1 inches above the winter season

Unemployment should continue slow fall this year

sshinneman@shawmedia.com John Rupp spent most of 2013 with a backpack full of bricks.

The McHenry man lost his job in December 2012, launching him into a job search world that felt foreign – gone was the importance of face-to-face interactions in favor of the all-important resume. It took nine months, but Rupp heard the sweet harmony of a job offer in September, alleviating the weight he had strapped to his shoulders all year.

“Once we get the call to say, ‘We want you,’ that burden is released,” Rupp said.

It’s an end result many would be pleased to duplicate in 2014, as Illinois looks to continue adding jobs and economists forecast a contin-

ued slow decrease in unemployment. As of November, Illinois unemployment sits at 8.7 percent, fourth-highest in the country, while the national rate is 7 percent.

The state economy is gaining about 6,000 jobs a month, compared to the 18,000 jobs Illinois was losing a month during the height of the recession, said Greg Rivara, Illinois Department of Employment Security spokesman.

“That’s a big swing,” Rivara said.

Rivara attributes falling unemployment to an improved housing market, better debt ratios and increased consumer confidence – a factor helped by Congress’ recent budget deal.

He said he sees no reason those trends won’t continue in 2014, continuing to drive down unemployment, albeit gradual-

ly, while growing the economy.

“You’d anticipate that growth is going to continue,” Rivara said.

Economist Fred Giertz, of the University of Illinois, agrees with the assessment that unemployment should continue to drop in the coming year. But he tempered his enthusiasm.

“In essence, it’s good news with where we are now but it’s not particularly good news with where we should be at this stage in an economic recovery,” Giertz said.

He anticipated the national unemployment rate will drop below 7 percent, and that Illinois could dip below 8 percent, “if things go well.”

Some think the figure could be affected by Congress failing to pass an extension to its longterm unemployment benefits program, which expired Satur-

day. Put into place in 2008, the benefits were providing federal help to those unemployed for between 27 and 73 weeks.

If an extension had passed, the final tier of benefits would have been cut out in Illinois, eliminating those unemployed for more than 63 weeks from the program, Rivara said.

Some national economists have projected that unemployment rates will quickly drop without the long-term benefits, as more people exit the labor force by simply giving up on finding work.

Rivara said his department hasn’t done projections to that end in Illinois, where about 80,000 residents were receiving the benefits.

But Giertz said the drop in benefits could potentially force the unemployed to find jobs quicker.

“It’s kind of like a toughlove situation,” he said.

For Rupp, the unemployment benefits helped him continue to focus his efforts on getting back into the workforce permanently. It took him time to get a feel for how companies evaluated employees in the technology age. He eventually met with an HR company to spruce his resume, then got additional training paid for though his local Workforce Network Board.

Two weeks after the training, he accepted a job to be quality systems manager for West Chicago-based American Standard Circuits.

All the damage to Rupp’s self worth that a prolonged search had done was lifted when he received his offer.

Fire above cafe damages apartment NORTHWEST HERALD MARENGO – An apartment above the Marengo Café was heavily damaged after a fire Jan. 2, according to the Marengo Fire Protection District.

Crews were called about 10:30 a.m. for a report of a structure fire above the Marengo Cafe at the 100 block of South Main Street, fire officials said. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from a second-floor window above the business.

One woman inside the apartment was able to exit the building without serious injury but was transported to an area hospital for observation, Fire Chief Bob Bradbury said. The apartment was heavily damaged, and a neighboring apartment received some smoke damage.

Marengo Cafe suffered minor water damage, Bradbury said. The fire was extinguished about 11:30 a.m. and is being deemed accidental in nature.

The investigation is ongoing.

Bird watchers gather for annual count

The National Audubon Society’s 113th annual Christmas Bird Count this month yielded some exciting numbers, volunteers said, as counts in Kane, DuPage, McHenry and DeKalb counties documented the ups and downs of various species. Birds are counted across North America from Dec. 14 through Jan. 5.

Volunteers count birds in designated 15-mile diameter circles every year. Results are tabulated and reported to the Illinois Audubon Society.

We did get eagles, and a Bonaparte’s gull and a lot of Lapland longspurs. But none of the winter finches, which we had kind of hoped to get with the winter weather.”

Genoa resident Karen Lund, who belongs to the McHenry group, said numbers were down because it snowed all day.

“Our team had one screech owl and a yellow-rumped warbler,” Lund said.

In DuPage County, birders reported two new species, said Jeff Chapman of Woodridge, a member of the DuPage Birding Club.

“The American pipit and a pileated woodpecker,” Chapman said. “The pipit was counted at Fermilab. They normally migrate to southern Illinois by this time, so this was new.”

The pileated woodpecker – made famous by the cartoon character Woody Woodpecker – was counted in the Elsen’s Hill area of the West DuPage Woods in Winfield.

“That is a bird that was not found in the Chicago area for years and years,” Chapman said of the large black woodpecker, known for the brilliant red crest on its head and the bold white stripes on its face and neck.

“In the last 10 years, it’s started to move in,” Chapman said. “It kept getting closer to us, and we finally got them in our area.”

Other species with good showings were bald eagles, American robins and eastern bluebirds, Chapman said.

“In 20 years, we had zero bluebirds, and this year we had 88,” Chapman said. “We never had one bald eagle until

They also counted 52 great blue herons, breaking its previous high count of 39 in 2006, Chapman said.

The Fermilab count, which is half in Kane and DuPage counties, is shared by volunteers from Chapman’s group and the Kane County Audubon Society.

Jon Duerr of St. Charles, a member of the Kane group, said 78 species were counted.

“It was a record-breaking year for great blue herons, eastern bluebirds and eagles,” Duerr said. “It’s always exciting to see the eagles flying back and forth across the river. It’s one of the feel-good stories about how the eagle population ... [is] taking advantage of the clean waters of the Fox River now and

To the uninitiated, counting birds might seem like an impossible task – but Duerr and Chapman said it is important work that will show local trends among bird populations for scientists to study.

“It’s been done since 1900.

That’s 113 years,” Chapman said. “It provides reliable data on a yearly basis where you can start to notice trends. We can clearly see an increase in eastern bluebirds and an increase of Cooper’s hawks. Cooper’s hawks were nonexistent in the 1980s, and now you can see 30 and 40 of them.”

For Duerr, compiling information year after year provides solid data about bird species and habitat.

“The broad strokes are really quite striking,” Duerr said.

“In Kane County, it’s 38 years of looking at something in the same area.”

For example, the closing up of the area’s landfills during the last couple of decades has resulted in fewer gulls, Duerr said.

“Ten thousand gulls frequented Settlers Hill landfill,” Duerr said. “That free food is no longer there.”

Bird counts also documented the decline in the American crow population, still devastated by West Nile virus that hit in 2002.

“The crow population in DuPage was especially hard hit by West Nile, and they have not recovered,” Chapman said. “Our high count of all time was 1,500 in 1998 ….

Last year we saw 75. This year, we only saw 56 crows.”

Businesses that sell winter apparel, snowblowers, shovels and salt depend on those wintry forecasts. Colder temperatures and snowier conditions usually create an uptick in customers at Alpine Accessories, Pasturczak said.

It also creates enthusiasm for those customers wanting to sled, snowmobile and snowboard.

“If mother nature keeps this up, people are going to be outside and want to have fun,” Pasturczak said. “If that happens, people obviously will need more gear.”

Kip Novotny has seen similar effects at his shop. Since December, Novotny Sales has been selling snowmobiles, snowblowers and shovels “like crazy” to prepare for the early winter start, Novotny said.
