Huntley helps rescue shelter

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – Community members and a Crystal Lake business helped rescue Animal House Shelter in Huntley this weekend after one of the nonprofit organization’s heaters failed Jan. 3.

The boiler used to heat the pet shelter’s concrete floors stopped working as the area prepared for record cold temperatures, Animal House Shelter Director Cynthia Ritter said.

Although the boiler used to heat the air continued working, Ritter said, the shelter had to scramble to get bedding for 150 dogs and 100 cats at the facility. Tech-

nicians from Black Diamond Plumbing and Mechanical in Crystal Lake found the boiler was beyond repair.

As word of the shelter’s situation began to spread, local residents donated blankets and other bedding for the animals and turned up with cash and checks to help replace the boiler.

“It was overwhelming,”

Ritter said. “[Jan. 3 and 4], we had a constant flow of people coming in with donations and supplies.”

Hearing the nonprofit was short on cash, Black Diamond President Rick Sperando decided to donate the company’s services. Black Diamond workers had the replacement boiler working and the temperature rising by 5 p.m. Jan. 4. Donations from the community will be used to offset the cost of purchasing the boiler, according to an email from the shelter.

“It was wonderful they were able to get it going so quickly before the extreme cold hit,” Ritter said.

A new Illinois State Water Survey study said what a multitude of studies before it have concluded – McHenry County’s groundwater supply could become a big problem over the next decades.

In a 242-page report released Jan. 7, the survey team led by hydrogeologist Scott Meyer concluded, if left unchecked, groundwater resources by 2050 could be strained to the point of water shortages and adverse effects on rivers, streams and wetlands.

“How much groundwater is available to users in McHenry County long-term – that is, the sustainable pumping rate – depends on how groundwater withdrawals affect the environment and what the public considers to be acceptable environmental impacts,” the report stated.

McHenry County is entirely dependent on groundwater for its water supply. Existing limits on how much water can be drawn from Lake Michigan, to say nothing of the cost, make the avenue taken by municipalities in Cook and the other collar counties highly improbable.

County wells pumped an average of 24.7 million gallons a day in 2009, according to the report. Depending on growth and use practices, that amount could increase by 2050 to between 31.5 million and 67.9 million gallons a day – an increase of 6.8 percent in the best-case scenario to 175 percent in the worst.

Meyer and his colleagues mapped water levels from 329 county wells in 1994 and again in 2011, and built a computer model to simulate groundwater flow from more than 8,700 wells. Some of that data came from a network of 40 or so monitoring wells the county had drilled in 2008 for exactly

By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – The Huntley Area Public Library reopened Jan. 9 after being forced to close earlier in the week when the extreme cold ruptured sprinklers and damaged materials.

Officials opened the library’s doors around 3 p.m. with limited seating, computer access and services following a two-day cleanup effort that soaked the library’s new carpet and furniture. The total property damage costs are unknown.

“We have carpet drying out, we have wet couches and chairs and we have materials drying,” library spokeswoman Leigh Ann Porsch said.

“It’s not extensive damage.

Things are just a mess.”

It’s been a rough start to 2014 for the library that serves about 25,000 Huntley-area residents. On Jan. 6, the subzero temperatures knocked out the library’s power and shut down the building’s furnace.

The lack of heat also froze the pipes connected to the li-

brary’s sprinklers, Porsch said.

Despite the cold temperatures closing the library Jan. 6, officials, who were monitoring the furnace situation from home, walked into a shuttered library to find one sprinkler head near the library’s main area burst.

On Jan. 7, after the cold weather again closed the library, officials found that another sprinkler head had busted, Porsch said. Even with the water supply shut off, an outside spigot near the director’s office burst late in the evening

Simulations in the report suggest that problems could arise as soon as 2030, particularly in the county’s heavily-populated southeast. By then, drawdown in deep-aquifer wells could be significant enough to prevent those wells from providing the amounts of water expected if they are not drilled deep enough. But wells in shallow aquifers, which

The west side of the building, near the library’s bay windows and the audiobook section suffered the worst water damage, Porsch said. The library’s materials are relatively intact, aside from some damaged audiobooks, CDs and children audio kits.

Contractors were on site with large fans and dehumidifiers, drying out furniture and the library’s newly

installed carpet. The biggest concern was ensuring that mold hadn’t grown underneath the carpet, Porsch said.

Officials secured a state grant to help pay and install about 12,000 square feet of new earth-toned carpet last summer to the library’s audiobook, fiction and reference areas. The remodeling project cost $55,975.

At least two sprinkler heads will need to be replaced and some drywall will need to be redone, Porsch said.

“Our models also suggest that there could be significant additional drawdown in the vicinities of shallow well fields supplying public water systems of Woodstock and several other communities in southeastern McHenry County,” Meyer said.

The report also singles out Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Cary

and Carpentersville as at-risk locations.

It continues that the drawing down of shallow aquifers would have an adverse environmental impact on the levels of creeks, streams, wetlands and other habitats. Natural groundwater discharge during the study period dropped by about 11.5 percent, with the greatest reductions being found at the outlet of Crys-

tal Lake and Silver Creek in Woodstock.

A number of studies have warned that McHenry County’s explosive growth could one day outstrip nature’s way of supplying it with water, but concerns have moved out of the spotlight in recent years since the popping of the housing bubble and the sluggish economy that followed put the brakes on development.

Donating the company’s services was an easy decision for Sperando.

“We’re also animal lovers,” he said.

Sperando said his children and several Black Diamond employees had adopted pets from the shelter. He estimated the company spent about $4,000 on the job, but added, “You can’t put a price on goodwill.”

Ritter said the boiler may have gone out because it was working extra hard to combat the facility’s poor insulation.

She estimated it would cost about $20,000 to properly re-insulate the shelter. That expense comes on top of $40,000 the shelter recently paid for a new roof.

While losing a boiler in winter is never good, Ritter said the ordeal had “almost been a blessing in disguise.”

“It has raised awareness of the shelter and the plight of homeless animals,” she said.

Ritter praised the community’s reaction and Black Diamond’s donation.

“It’s been wonderful to see the response, it has literally been bringing tears of joy to our eyes to see how much people care,” she said. “We couldn’t have asked for more.

The Marengo resident helped patients use the bathroom, checked their blood sugar levels and fed them.

The 24-year-old eventually followed in her mother’s footsteps and became an emergency room nurse.

Purdom-Carr is part of the ever-growing health care field, which is expected to add millions of jobs through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

As the general population continues to age and live longer, there will be a need for more health care workers and social assistance workers, according to a report the bureau released in December.

There are times Purdom-Carr speaks to hospital technicians about possibly going into nursing.

“There’s so many options as far as being a nurse; you can do anything,” she said. “You can teach, you can work at a school, you can work in many different departments in the hospital. ... There’s a lot to do in nursing.”

The BLS has estimated that 5 million health care and social assistance jobs would be added between 2012 and 2022.

Jobs added by the health care industry are expected to create about a third of the 15.6 million new jobs expected in that 10year period, the BLS said.

Some of that growth in health care jobs is expected to take place in McHenry County.

Centegra Health System expects to add about 1,000 jobs by 2016 after completing construction of a new hospital in Huntley.

“A lot of individuals are using health care,” Szczepanski said. “There’s a rush of baby boomers, people retiring and phasing into retirement. The need is definitely there.”

Osborne runs an annual health career fair for eighth-graders in the county, where students learn about the different jobs in health care, other than doctors and nurses.

The students can learn about dietitian jobs, speech language pathology, physical therapy, medical physicists, medical lab technicians or

medical imaging roles, among other positions, he said.

Connie Gustafson is the manager of human resources at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

“We’re trying to [determine] what future needs will be, especially as we watch what happens with the [health] exchanges,” Gustafson said.

As hospitals try to determine new ways to more efficiently deliver health care, there is expected to be more demand for nurse practitioners and physician assistants, Gustafson said.

It would “help better manage that patient and the patient population in support of

the primary physician,” she said.

Advanced practice nurses also help facilitate special orders for patients or patient transfers overnight, said Cathy Scanlon, a staffing consultant for Good Shepherd.

There also will be a need for more nurses to help with follow-up medical care after people are discharged from the hospital, such as making sure they are able to get and take their medications, Scanlon said.

She added the aging baby boomer population is seeking more preventative care or is beginning to need even more regular care.

“There’s more focus on preventative care and better management of chronic health conditions so they don’t get worse,” she said. “There’s a great deal of focus on wellness.”

There are also positions that can assist licensed professionals in processing paperwork, which could give nurses more time to be bedside, Scanlon said.

“If we can have other jobs in support of licensed professionals, it helps create better efficiency,” Gustafson said.

Christine Curtis of Fox River Grove is a registered nurse at Good Shepherd.

The 25-year-old joined the hospital about a year ago after working in a nursing extended care home for a year and a half.

Along with having the passion for taking care of people, she knew nursing was a job that was in demand.

“I kind of always thought it would be a stable job and something I would be able to do for a long time,” Curtis said.

The medical-surgical nurse likes to encourage people who might want to go into the medical field.

“You could go anywhere and find something,” Curtis said.

Are vitamins useful?

Doctors can prescribe the supplements for people who might have nutritional gaps in their diets.

But recent studies published by the Annals of Internal Medicine journal said multivitamins don’t provide as much protection for aging brains in men or help heart attack survivors.

Millions of Americans spend billions of dollars on vitamin combinations, presumably to boost their health and fill gaps in their diets. But while people who don’t eat enough of certain nutrients might be urged to get them in pill form, the government doesn’t recommend routine vitamin supplementation as

a way to prevent chronic diseases.

The recent studies showed people who took vitamins fared no better on memory or other cognitive tests, and vitamins had no effect on the risk for heart disease.

Childress, a certified nutritionist, said two studies should not be the final word when it comes to multivitamins. He said there needs to be hundreds of studies done before saying multivitamins are not useful.

“To take one study out as the be all, end all is just disingenuous,” Childress said.

He said there are flaws in the study in who was included in the final numbers and the benchmarks people who used multivitamins had to meet.

Childress added the amount of nutrients people get from their diets is low, and people are mineral deficient. Childress

agreed people need to eat well.

“I think a person has to look at their diets and eat nutrient-dense food,” Childress said. “We eat a lot of processed carbohydrates ... that are nutrient poor food.”

Tiffanie Young is a registered dietitian and diabetes educator for the Centegra Health System.

She said sometimes people need to take vitamin supplements, especially if they have restrictive diets, such as being vegetarian or vegan.

People who eat less than 1,500 calories a day, people who are age 50 and older and don’t absorb nutrients as well, or people with food allergies might need supplements.

Also someone who is healing from a surgery and has greater nutritional needs might be a candidate for vitamin supplements, Young said.

Young also emphasized the need for a well-balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fat and low-fat dairy for the average healthy person.

Different vitamins have their own functions.

Vitamin B helps facilitate using energy correctly.

Vitamin A is good for skin and eyes. Vitamin D helps with bone strength and absorbing calcium.

It is possible for people to take too many vitamin supplements.

If people take too many water-soluble vitamins they may be excreted out through urine, Young said.

However, taking too much vitamin D, which people may take to make up for not getting enough sunlight, can lead to higher calcium levels.

Young said that could lead to kidney problems, nausea and vomiting.

Dr. Robert Malecki, a Crystal Lake-based family practice physician with Advocate Medical Group, said the main thing people should concentrate on is having a properly balanced diet, especially having the right amount of fruits and vegetables.

Malecki added that multivitamin supplements can be useful to cover gaps in people’s diets, but people shouldn’t use multivitamins as an excuse not to eat properly.

If people are picky about what they eat, they may become deficient of certain vitamins, such as someone who is vegetarian, Malecki said.

“For picky eaters, we’re trying to have them eat properly,” Malecki said.
