first National Night Out a success

The Erie Police Department hosted its first National Night Out in the Erie Middle School parking lot on Aug. 3, with hundreds of kids and their families enjoying an evening of entertainment and informational outreach.

National Night Out is a community-building campaign that promotes police and community partnerships. The aim is to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances, with the event held annually on the first Tuesday in August.

With plenty of activities for kids and adults, the evening’s festivities brought in various community agencies to support the cause.

There was a dunk tank operating but it had a malfunction when Jordyn Adams, daughter of SRO Jessica Adams, was sitting on the hot seat so the fun had to come to an end a bit early.

A few kids could be found cooling off in the tank, which was a good way to beat the evening’s humidity. Volunteers with the Erie Fire Department also brought in trucks, a hose, and a fire prop for the kids to spray the “fire” out, and by the end of the evening there were plenty of wet kids running around.

Jen and Larry Holldorf had the Erie ambulance on site for kids to explore, noting that a tour could help them to be at ease should they ever need to be in one. Jen added that the Erie Fire & Ambulance Department is seeking volunteer drivers in Erie, with minimal requirements needed to serve in that capacity.

There were also self-defense demonstrations provided by members of the Illinois National Guard, a pedal car course using the “drunk buster” goggles, face-painting, kids’ games and prizes, and hot dogs grilled up by EHS National Honor Society members.

Besides hosting Friday flight nights at the airpark, the Robinson’s will have their annual fly-in on September 17-19, featuring food, camping, movies, and a bonfire.

Members of the police department were overwhelmed with the great community response. “We didn’t know what to expect tonight and this community exceeded our expectations,” said Police Chief Rollie Elder.

Mayor Marcia Smith agreed. “National Night Out was a huge success. A big thank you to the police department and all the volunteers. The night was enjoyed by many children and their parents,” she said.

BRIEFS URICRA opens soccer registration, bags tournament planned

Fall soccer registration is now open through the Upper Rock Island County Recreation Association, both online or at a walk-in event.

Organizers will be at River Valley District Library on Saturday, Aug. 7 from 10 a.m. noon for walk-in registration. The cost is $50 per child, and the registration deadline is Sat-

urday, Aug. 14.

Games will start on Sept. 13 for 6U, 8U, and 10U teams, with games scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays at Dorrance Park in Port Byron. The 12U and 14U games will be played Saturday mornings at Riverdale Middle School or other area schools, with games starting Sept. 4.

URICRA will also have their annual Tug Fest Bags Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 14 in the north parking lot across from Tuggers.

Whiteside County police dog Copper putting smiles on faces

MORRISON – The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department is going to the dogs, but that is a good thing.

A department that already had two multipurpose K-9 Unit dogs recently added a community comfort dog. Copper, a 10-week-old golden doodle, was purchased for $1,700 from Desi Doodles, a pet service in Prophetstown.

Copper has a much different job than the two K-9 Unit dogs on staff, Amor and Chico. Those two ride with patrol officers and perform duties such as drug searches, apprehensions and search and rescue.

Copper will spend much of his time at the April House Children’s Advocacy Center, just up the street from the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department in Morrison. April House is a place for children who have been the victim of crimes to stay and be interviewed by police and other professionals.

“Because these kids are victims of crimes, and there are such horrible crimes against them, we wanted something to try and brighten up their experience with police,” Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said. “That’s when Copper came into the picture. We’ve been talking, and the staff has been wanting a community comfort dog, so now was the time to step up and do that.

“Copper comes to work every day and puts a smile on people’s faces. It’s definitely an added improvement to our police work. We’ll go into nursing homes, hospitals, schools – just to put a smile on people’s faces. He handles that job very easily.”

The Sterling Police Department has a community comfort dog, Brinkley, that has been making the rounds, including several trips to April House. Booker thought it was time to give Brinkley a break.

“Brinkley was overworked and constantly over here at April House,” Booker said. “We want to lighten up his load for when these kids come in for these forensic interviews.”

Copper’s first day on the job was July 11, and he’s been on the go ever since.

“We get phone calls. We get emails.

We get messages,” Booker said. “He needs to be everywhere. Everybody wants to see him. We have people coming into the sheriff’s office just to see him. The other day, we had some kids in to see their dad before he went to prison. They were very much emotionally upset, and Copper came out on his own, went up to the kids and put a

Copper is in the early stages of a yearlong training period with Susan Jacobs, a professional dog trainer with more than 30 years of experience. Each Tuesday, Copper is taken to the Rock Falls Community Building, where he is taught not to scratch and bite and jump on people, to name a few things.

“Some of it’s just puppy stuff that he’s going through, but yes, he does have training to do,” Booker said.

“He is an excellent dog,” said Kim Cavazos, jail administrator and Copper’s primary handler. “He’s doing great on all of his training. He’s very calm. He chills out. He’s not hyper.

Everywhere we’ve gone, everybody’s happy to see him. People can pet him.

We go all over.”

An added bonus is the cost – it is minimal. Before Booker became sheriff three years ago, there had been a fund that already was established for K-9 Unit expenses through generous donors.

That is how all three of the K-9 Unit dogs were purchased.

Purina provides food, while PetSmart aids in feeding the animals and grooming. Private and corporate donations keep the K-9 Unit fund operational. The only expense is veterinarian bills.

“It isn’t any tax dollars that are going toward this,” Booker said. “People that

complain that their tax dollars are going toward four-legged animals, that’s not true. This is no expense to the county.

It’s all donations, and you can’t spend this money on anything else besides K-9 stuff. That’s why we have the two multi-purpose K-9s and the community comfort dog.”

Amor, a German shepherd, joined the force on Feb. 25, 2020, while Chico, a malamute, began working in Morrison on May 19. They came from a company in Michigan.

“Chico’s a little bit smaller than Amor,” Booker said, “but he’s picking things up good. The two of them get along great. They go places together and work together. They like Copper a lot, so the three of them get along good together. They’re just a great addition to the department.”

Copper is a bit of an internet sensation. He has a Facebook page, CopperWHCOSheriff, and already has about 1,000 followers.

“There’s so many people that have commented because I’ll put quirky stuff on there,” Cavazos said. “Along with his pictures, I’ll put captions, and there’s been a few people that have commented that it makes their day.

They look forward to his daily updates, so I have to come up with something unique every day.”

Pop-up vaccine clinic Thursday in Morrison

MORRISON – The Whiteside County Health Department mobile unit will be in Morrison on Thursday, Aug. 12, for a pop-up vaccine clinic.

The Pfizer vaccine will be available from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at French Creek Park, 650 Portland Ave. Anyone 12 and older is eligible for the vaccine.

No appointment is needed.

The Whiteside County Health Department in Rock Falls is providing COVID-19 vaccines Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Morrison dog park in running for $25,000 grant, needs your votes

KAST Laser Creations recently held a fundraiser and collected more than $200 for the future Morrison Bark Park. They sold water thermoses inscribed with paw prints and the name of the person’s dog.

Other recent donations to the dog park include $500 each from Everett and Nancy Pannier, Rock River Lumber and Grain, and Candlelight Inn Restaurant.

On the Move with Parks and Recreation appreciates each donation that helps make this dream a reality.

On the Move with Parks and Recreation has raised more than $20,000 for the future Morrison Bark Park. Donors of $500 or more will have their names placed at the dog park.

MORRISON – Morrison is one of 30 finalists in the PetSafe Bark for Your Park dog park contest in which five communities will win a $25,000 grant.

Online voting runs through Aug. 31 at barkforyourpark. com. Participants, who must be 18 or older, can vote once a day.

The Morrison Bark Park will be built at the former Legion baseball diamond on Genesee Street, just north of Northside Elementary School.

If they win a grant, organizers plan to use the money for Phase 1, which involves building a $50,000 fence around the site this fall. So far, about $20,000 has been raised.

Phase 2 will be a walking path with engraved bricks that can be bought in memory of pets. Phase 3 will include the

parking lot, water station, benches, a fountain and aesthetics.

The On The Move with Parks and Recreation committee, formed in 2019 to provide and enhance recreational opportunities in the community, is spearheading the effort.

The committee is partnering with the Morrison Lions Club Foundation to collect donations, which are tax-deductible. Checks should be made payable to the foundation with Morrison Bark Park in the memo field and sent to or dropped off at TBK Bank, attention dog park, P.O. Box 30, 211 W. StradaComm building fiber network in Erie

After a months’ long process to get approvals, easements, and a plan of action, a Rapids City company is in the process of bringing a fiber internet network to Erie.

Construction started about a month ago, focusing first on the east side of the railroad tracks said Scott Searl, co-owner of Strada Communications, LLC, an internet service provider located at 224 13th St. Installing the main infrastructure of the network is a long process, but one that’s worth the anticipation and wait.

First there are 17 miles of conduit and fiber to install underground, with evidence of that process visible at intersections, especially closer to the schools. The company’s goal is to “light up” the first customer on December 1, barring no setbacks from material orders or weather.

“It’s a big opportunity for the town,” said Searl.

From surfing the web, streaming TV, running security cameras, enabling wi-fi and more, a fiber optic system is built for high usage and growth, with reliable and high-speed fiber internet for all budgets.

The Riverdale School District was one of StradaComm’s first customers over two years ago, with Searl and his business partners determined to provide fast and reliable internet in the schools that had frequent outages and connectivity issues. Since the underground installation, the internet has not been down since, says Searl, and the company is excited to “extend their footprint and to help out our neigh-

The fiber optic service is currently available in Rapids City and Port Byron, with 700 active and satisfied customers, he notes. Fiber optics is a communication line made of glass - and slightly larger than a human hair - which allows the transmission of data to travel at the speed of light. It provides a faster and more reliable service than that of the traditional, outdated copper-based plants used by other internet companies.

StradaComm was also the first company in Illinois to use AFL spider fiber, and their use of a “future path conduit system” put them on the map.

Each household or business is assigned their own continuous dedicated fiber back to the data center, in addition to their own port. This allows for growth if there’s a need for faster speed, though customers’ speeds don’t slow down if more users go online.

The business is currently marketing in Erie with mailers and door hangers, with an aim to give every Erie resident and business another internet option in a village known for frequent service issues. Searl says there are no contracts, data caps, installation fees, or equipment rentals to factor in, with upfront and consistent billing. And as a locally-owned and operated company, customer service is literally just down the road.

Once the build in Erie is done, Searl expects the company to focus next on Lyndon, Prophetstown, and Cordova, with those initial efforts a year or more away. Additional information and pre-signup can be found at stradacomm.com or by calling 309496-3737

BRIEF ISP announces activity for July

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for July.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 291 citations, 498 written warnings, and made 10 criminal arrests during the month of July.

Speeding accounted for 138 citations, 18 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 25 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

There were 23 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/revoked.

Troopers investigated 20 traffic crashes, assisted 122 motorists, and conducted 167 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 35 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 4 arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated one fatal traffic crash in July.

RCFPD JULY REPORT Volunteers with the Rapids City Fire Protection District responded to 35 calls for assistance in July. A breakdown of those calls is as follows: Village of Rapids City – Four EMS calls and one fire alarm.

Village of Port Byron – Five EMS calls and one fire alarm.

Fire Protection District (Rural) – Nineteen EMS calls and two traffic

accidents.

Automatic Aid was given to Hillsdale Fire Department for one traffic accident and one vehicle fire. Mutual Aid was given to Cordova Fire Department for one structure fire.

After a year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tug Fest 2021 will be returning to the Port Byron riverfront this weekend with live music, great food, fun activities for kids and adults, spectacular fireworks, and, of course, the one and only tug of war across the Mighty Mississippi.

The event’s namesake attraction will be from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14. Ten men’s teams of 20 tuggers and one team of 25 women will pull with everything they’ve got to bring home the Alabaster eagle trophy.

The 2,700-foot-long, 680-pound rope stops all Mississippi River traffic between Port Byron and LeClaire, Iowa, during the competition.

Visitors to Port Byron will be met with roads and sidewalks under construction along Route 84, especially at Walnut Street, though work on Cherry and Lynn streets should be done by the time festivities start.

Erie Evangelical Free Church held their 5th annual Erie Schools Prayer Walk on Sunday, Aug. 8, with over two dozen people gathering at the Erie elementary, middle, and high schools plus administration building to pray for peace, calm, and wisdom as the new school year kicks off.

“We know how important schools

are to our community, our kids, grandkids, and families,” said Pastor Jonathan Eckberg. “We’re here to pray for safety, for the kids to adjust, for the parents, for the teachers, staff, and administration.” He said it’s important to support the kids and pray for blessings for the schools and community, during these trying and anxious times.

Volunteers were set up in the triangle on Saturday, Aug. 7 to collect signatures for a petition to the Erie Board of Education to keep the Return to Learn plan that was approved at the meeting on Monday, Aug. 2. That plan allowed for optional mask-wearing regardless of vaccination status. On Wednesday, Aug. 4, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker issued Executive Order 2021-18, which mandates that anyone entering a school

is required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

Petition organizers collected 184 signatures over the weekend, with more expected by the time they submit it. The petition and signatures were emailed to the superintendent and school board on Monday, Aug. 9, asking them to stand their ground and letting them know they have community support. School will be back in session on Friday, Aug. 13.

Richard Bielenberg of Fulton was presented an Outstanding Performance Rating from the Rock Island District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for his work as a construction inspector during the past year. He was praised by Corps officials, who said his construction knowledge and experience coupled with his aggressiveness and tact were instrumental in the efficient supervision of more than $5.4 million of flood control construction projects.

By unanimous vote of the board of trustees, Janvrin Mitchell was asked to assume the board presidency of the Fulton Flood Control District, succeeding the late James Shipma, who had served as president since the district was formed. Mitchell has been vice president of the board since its

inception.

David Vander Goot will be the new superintendent at the CommUnity Christian Schools. He comes to Fulton from Imlay City, Michigan.

The Fulton City Council approved the purchase of 44.30 acres of land in the south part of Fulton. Drives Inc. owns the property. The city agreed to purchase the entire parcel for $80,000.

The city purchased the land to have a site available for any industry that may want to develop their business in Fulton.

Myths debunked: Aging is related to lifestyle, not genetics

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. As we become an aging society, it may be helpful to debunk some of the myths of aging. Keep in mind the common theme: aging either successfully or prematurely is 90% related to lifestyle as opposed to genetics. How you move and what you eat are the biggest determinations by far.

Myth No. 1: Aging is genetic. While it is true that some people have an eas-

ier path to old age, most of us can strongly influence that path.

Myth No. 2: Thin is good. Actually, slightly overweight people are better than thin. Still, obesity needs to be avoided for optimal results. Perhaps Ben Franklin’s aphorism that there are more old fat people than there are old doctors needs to be recalled.

Myth No. 3: You need to take expensive products to lengthen your telomeres. While telomeres are indeed

important and allow cells and tissues to live longer, this does not require expensive products.

Myth No. 4: Aggressive exercise is essential. The wrong type of exercise causes oxidative stress that is destructive.

Myth No. 5: You need low cholesterol. We have said it before and repeat it here. The healthiest elders have generally higher cholesterol. Cholesterol is vitally needed by every cell in the body.

Myth No. 6: You need expensive human growth hormone supplements like Hollywood stars to gain an edge.

Simply not true.

Myth No. 7: Science has generally uncovered an upper aging limit of around 120. This is not determined scientifically but is merely a theory constructed that notes it’s rare to exceed age 120.

Lifestyle exceeds the influence of genetics and medicine.

Riverdale holds public hearing on Return to Learn plans

The Riverdale Board of Education held a public hearing and special meeting on Monday, Aug. 2 to take public comments on the district’s Return to Learn plan, with over thirty in attendance at the high school library and up to 180 viewers tuning in on Facebook Live.

Superintendent Josh Temple said the school has been tracking guidance since the end of last school year, with the ISBE even issuing new guidelines that afternoon. Temple said there was “lots of guidance and lots of confusion,” especially pertaining to mandated masks in the schools.

Parents and taxpayers on both sides of the ideological spectrum had a chance to express their opinions to the board. Comments ranged from COVID19 stats, social and health impacts of masking, local decision making and involving parents in policy discussions, and the need to follow CDC recommendations. A petition with 353 signatures opposing mask mandates and seeking non-discrimination for personal medical decisions was presented

“The purpose of this meeting is to share your thoughts on the plan we put together and to be transparent. I’m not a politician or a doctor. I’m a dad, and a superintendent for a year, and there are rules and laws we have to follow while giving kids the best education that we can.”

Whiteside County Fair Board honors ‘Friend of the Fair’ MORRISON – Since 1989, the Whiteside County Fair Board has honored those who have made an extra effort to support and make the annual fair as much fun as possible for those who participate and attend the many shows and events.

These people are known as “Friend of the Fair” honorees.

The board announced its 2021 Friend of the Fair is William McKinney Fickling, better known in Whiteside County as “Corndog Billy.”

Billy and his family hail from Hughes Springs, Texas, which he said is the corndog capital of the world.

Billy has been coming to the fair, which he describes as “wonderful,” for 30-plus years. It is a pleasure to honor him with this title at the 150th fair. Billy is a friend of many in Whiteside County, and he is best known for his big smile and radiant personality, as well as the tasty treats he brings to the fair. His kindness is appreciated by all, and working with him over the years has been a privilege.

Bil ly’ s love fo r the White side County Fair stems from “all of the nice people here,” and he said the fairgrounds is “one of the prettiest fairgrounds” he gets to work on. He said that when he gets to Morrison, he and his family feel like they are at home.

Billy and his family said they are grateful to be a big part of the fair, but those of us who have munched on a corn dog, enjoyed a lemonade shakeup or indulged in a funnel cake can agree that we are just as grateful for Billy and his family.

Whiteside County Fair office open for ticket sales this week MORRISON – The Whiteside County Fair office is open for business for the entire week before the 150th annual Whiteside County Fair, which kicks off Aug. 17.

The office of the secretary and treasurer are located in the building near the grandstand at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds and is open the week before the fair from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13. On Saturday, Aug. 14, the hours will be 8 a.m. to noon. During this time, they will be accepting hand delivered entries, processing entries received by mail, selling reserved grandstand seating for the Demo Derby, and selling season tickets and mega passes.

Mega passes can be purchased for $50 through Monday, Aug. 16. Once the fair starts, the mega pass price increases to $60 and the pass will need to be pur-

chased at the carnival. The mega pass lets you ride any of the Wilson Family Rides when the carnival is open during the 2021 Whiteside County Fair.

Reserved grandstand seating for Saturday night’s demolition derby is on sale in the secretary’s office for $8 a person. The Demo Derby is the only show that has reserved seating. It is sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

There are a limited number of seats available. Reserved seating may be purchased online at Eventbrite.com.

Saving seats by using blankets, etc. is not allowed. Any items used for saving seats will be removed by Whiteside County Fair staff members.

There are no entry fees for exhibits in the departments of agriculture, floriculture, horticulture, textiles, culinary and hobbies. Adult exhibitors must purchase a $20 season membership ticket. Junior exhibitors who are 6 to 11

years of age must purchase a $5 season ticket to enter in junior departments.

The ticket allows the exhibitor to enter items in any of the departments and provides unlimited admission to the fairgrounds throughout the fair’s fiveday run.

Livestock exhibitors are required to pay exhibit fees and should consult the website, www.whitesidecountyfair. org, for details.

All exhibitors are urged to refer to the website for details on the requirements to enter the competitions, which this year offer more than $119,000 in premiums, purses and prizes. Entries and premium information can be downloaded from the fair website at www.whitesidecountyfair.org in the premium section.

Entries must be done online or in writing, with the applicable fees submitted by the appropriate deadlines as

listed on the website. All entries close Saturday, Aug. 14.

The office will accommodate those wishing to buy season membership tickets, which allows the ticket-holder unlimited admission to the fair. An adult season membership ticket costs $20; a child’s weekly pass is $5. Tickets for both children and adults also may be purchased at the gate during the fair. Adult daily admission for the fair is $10 for those 12 and older. It’s $2 for children ages 6 to 11. Children 5 and under are free.

The fair starts at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, with the western horse show at the “River Valley Coop Arena” in the infield.

Friends of the Hennepin Canal’s monthly hike set for Aug. 15 The Friends of the Hennepin Canal are holding their monthly Hike the Canal outing on Sunday, Aug. 15.

This month’s hike will be from Bridge 34 to Bridge 37. The hike is 3.5 miles in length. Meet at Bridge 37 (the Geneseo Campground) at 1:30 p.m., where all will

be shuttled to Bridge 34 to begin the hike. The Geneseo Campground is located on Route 82, north of Geneseo and on the north side of the canal.

The monthly hikes were developed by the Friends of the Hennepin Canal as an opportunity for everyone to get to know

the canal personally by hiking it from the Illinois River to the Mississippi River (including the feeder canal) in small legs.

You do not need to be a member of the Friends of the Hennepin Canal to join us on any of the hikes. There is no fee for the hikes. Come and join in the

fun and bring a friend. Dress appropriately for the weather.

Port Byron addresses construction concerns

Now in its 11th week, the major infrastructure project to replace water mains and fix the sidewalks along IL Route 84 is taking its toll on the village, traffic, and affected residences, the Port Byron board discussed at their meeting on Monday, Aug. 2.

Mayor Barb Cray acknowledged that the project is slightly running behind and different intersections are all torn up at once, with “Lynn, Cherry, and Walnut being a big concern,” especially if emergency access is needed.

Cray called a meeting with all parties involved for Wednesday, Aug. 4 including contractor Miller Trucking & Excavating, engineer MSA, MidAmerican Energy, IDOT, and Port Byron Fire Chief Don Carey to get everyone on the same page and to “get together and move it forward,” she said.

“It’s been challenging, and I’m very nervous with Tug Fest next week, and concerned that it’s a hazard for the community,” said Cray. She added that the crews have “not been working together as much as they should’ve.”

Cherry and Lynn Streets are expected to be accessible from Rte. 84 by the time Tug Fest starts on Thursday, Aug. 12.

In personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Deputy Clerk Laura Johnson, who is moving back to her home state of Wisconsin. Cray appointed Kelly Bechtel of Hillsdale to the position for a probational period.

Bechtel is currently the part-time utilities clerk in Rapids City, which uses the same billing system as Port Byron.

Her part-time employment and orientation would start the following week.

“She’s a perfect fit for us,” said Cray.

The board passed a resolution to expand the Economic Development Committee by two members due to interest from the community. Baby Blues Fest will be on Labor Day this year, and instead of t-shirts the village will be selling koozies. In Tug Fest news, the board discussed parking passes and special permits for businesses and residences in the downtown. Local Boy Scouts have volunteered to be part of the clean-up crew.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will have a meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 8, to review and vote on the first draft of the comprehensive plan proposal before bringing it to the board. Trustee Gerry Meade said the Zoning Board of Appeals may take up a rezoning request for the old congregational church that’s currently on the market on N. High St. If the sale is made, the buyer wants to repurpose the building into an antique shop.

The board approved payments of $1,427.65 to Thompson Truck & Trailer for repairing the brake line on the 2007 International Truck, $1,268.58 to A-L-L Equipment for servicing the air compressor and replacing the air lines, and $705 to Toppert Jetting for work on a sewer back up at residence at N. Main St., the second time at the same residence. The board will look into ways to address the problem.

The Browns deliver the powerful message of the gospel through word and song that engage audiences of all ages.

All women are invited to Stonecroft’s “After Five” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Triple Play Banquet and Bowl, 1609 Ninth Ave. in Fulton.

Cost of the dinner is $11.

Stonecroft is a nondenominational and international Christian women’s group. All women are welcome to dinner, a special feature and an inspirational speaker. The only cost is for the dinner.

The special feature will be from Pam Darrow of Savanna, who will talk about the museum and cultural center in Savanna. She also has a fantastic lemon collection that she will show.

The inspirational speaker will be Lois Kording of Jacksonville, who will present “Do You Believe in Miracles?” Kording is a retired nurse and will share her inspiring life.

Ebenezer to pray, collect donations for schools

During the 9:30 a.m. worship service Sunday, Aug. 15, at Ebenezer Reformed Church, a time of prayer will take place for students, teachers, school faculty including cafeteria and lunchroom workers, school nurses, custodians, bus drivers, recess supervisors, volunteers, and everyone involved with the school day.

Donations of supplies will be collected in an effort to help with the outof-pocket expenses many of the staff and volunteers provide throughout the school year.

Donations can be placed on the table in the front of the sanctuary on a Sunday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 22. Items requested to be donated are paper towels, Kleenex tissues, Clorox or Lysol wipes, baby wipes, snack size baggies, 5-ounce Dixie cups, Play-Doh and EXPO fine tip dry erase markers.

In addition to the donated items, monetary donations will be accepted.

Plan to join us as we come together as one heart and voice and humbly ask the Lord for his presence in our schools.

Ebenezer Reformed Church is located at 309 E. Park St., Morrison.

Back 2 School Bash at Erie United Methodist

Erie United Methodist Church will have a Back 2 School Bash from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Wesleyan Hall, 817 8th St. Stop by for free family fun for all ages. There will be games, food and prizes.

The winner of the Pie in the Face fundraiser will be announced and pied at 3:30 p.m. The contestants are Police Chief Rollie Elder, Pastor Tiffany Garcea and Youth and Family Coordinator Lexus Georgean. Donation jars are at the Erie Police Department, EUMC Sanctuary and S&B Corner Café. The contestant with the most change will be pied. Donations will be collected through Friday, Aug. 13.

All proceeds go to the church’s youth program.

Emmanuel Church services set for 9 a.m. Aug. 15

Plan to join us at Emmanuel Reformed Church on Sunday, Aug. 15, and feel free to come a little early and grab a cup of coffee in the welcome center before the 9 a.m. worship service. All are welcome and reminded that Emmanuel Church is a “come as you are” family and dress clothes certainly are not necessary.

Pastor Luke Schouten continues his message series, “Armor of God” with

“Shield of Faith” drawn from Ephesians 6: 16. Kathy Green will provide the special music and will sing “Arms of Love.”

Exaltation will lead the worship set, and Ministry Coordinator Rich Criss will serve as organist for the service. Coffee and fellowship follow worship in the Christ Center.

Emmanuel Church will host its eighth annual car show from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Whiteside County Fairgrounds. There will be a pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m., and there will be lunch stands provided by the Kiwanis and Morrison High School cheerleaders.

Sunday, Aug. 29, will be a very special day. The congregations of Ebenezer and Emmanuel churches will join together for worship followed by a potluck. This year, the combined service will be at Ebenezer at 9:30 a.m. with Pastors Schouten and J.T. Bean joining forces to present the message. A combined praise team and combined choir will provide music, and the sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated.
