cbielema@shawmedia.com MORRISON – Shelli Eng remembers when, as a child, she would bake alongside her grandmother.

The treats they made did not come from a cookbook; her grandma had the recipes in her head. No need for measuring cups from the store; they used soup cans that had been cut down and fashioned as measuring cups.

Eng, who throughout the years continued to use what her grandma taught her, now is getting ready to utilize those baking skills on a much larger scale. On Dec. 15, she will open the doors to her new business, The Bread Lady at Donnybrook Corner, in downtown Morrison.

A red-brick building at the corner of Main and Base streets, the Donnybrook building was purchased eight years ago by Pete Harkness of Sterling. Much of the structure’s main floor had been renovated by its previous owner when it was an Irish pub.

The upstairs has been remodeled into two furnished executive lofts. One is leased to a Sterling company; the other is an Airbnb, which is utilized by people near and far.

On Thursday, the polished wooden floors on the main floor were gleaming, display cases shining and the chairs throughout decked with Santa hats. A nook with tables has an open view of Main Street. That nook, a large main room with a counter and tables and retail area, and another adjacent room, when combined, have seating for 80 people.

“It’s just a spectacular building,” Harkness said.

Also on Thursday, Harkness put the finishing touch on the building by placing a turret on its northeast corner. Harkness knows there was one on the building years ago, but it had been removed. The building’s previous owner had fabricated a turret to sit atop the corner entrance, but it instead had remained sitting on top of a neighboring business’s roof. Around 1:30 p.m., Harkness was on hand to help set that turret in place on the Donnybrook building. A crane lifted the turret from the neighboring building to Donnybrook’s corner entrance and carefully set it in its new place.

As Harkness renovated the building over the past several years, Eng, of Erie, had a dream to a run a bakery at the location. She finally got the chance to move forward with that idea in February. Since then, she has been busy getting the building up to code and completing any needed repairs.

When Eng’s daughter was a small child, Eng baked and canned food to provide her daughter, who had been diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis and had seizures, with as clean a diet as possible.

Later, when Eng was baking and selling her goods as a cottage baker, she was on the front end of Illinois’ discussion about cottage bakery laws.

She now is a member of the Illinois Stewardship Alliance and has helped to shape legislation governing cottage baking rules, with plans to continue with that work and farm-to-table legislation.

“I’m hoping to be more farm-to-table than food-distributor-to-table, that’s important to me,” she said. “It’s going to be a little of a challenge, Illinois’ laws are tough on that. But I’m part of the Alliance that helped to write some of the laws.”

“We got the cottage law changed appropriately; it took me three years but we got it right, as right as we could,” she said. “Farm-to-table is a new issue, where we’re trying to get fresh food into schools, and there are grants out there people don’t know about. I’m a part of that so I know the caliber, the reason you should want to do that more.”

“We live in farm country,” she said.

“We should celebrate our farmers, direct to the table.”

Tips from Red Cross to prevent home fires from holiday decorations The holidays are a wonderful time to get everyone together. Unfortunately, they can also mean a greater risk of a fire in someone’s home. This holiday season, the Red Cross encourages everyone to follow simple steps to prevent home fires from holiday decorations.

• If you must use candles, keep them away from anything that could burn, and place them out of reach of pets and children. Never leave burning candles unattended.

• Check all holiday light cords to ensure they aren’t frayed or broken.

Don’t string too many strands of lights together – no more than three per extension cord.

• Ensure outside decorations are for outdoor use and fasten lights securely to your home or trees. If using hooks or nails outside, make sure they are insulated to avoid an electrocution or fire hazard.

• If buying an artificial tree, look for a fire-resistant label. When putting it up, keep it away from fireplaces, radiators and other sources of heat. Never use electric lights on metallic trees.

• If getting a live tree, make sure it’s

fresh and keep it watered. To test if the tree is fresh, bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off.

• Don’t light the fireplace if hanging stockings or other decorations on the mantel.

Install smoke alarms on every level of the home and outside each sleeping area. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year. If you cannot afford to purchase smoke alarms or are physically unable to install one, the Red Cross may be able to help. Contact your local Red Cross for help. Follow these holiday

Kathy was born September 8, 1942 in Moline, Illinois, the daughter of Elmer and Marguerite (Smith) Ely. She graduated from United Township High School in 1960. She married Richard “Dick” E. Mitton on December 29, 1967. Kathy worked at the State Hospital in East Moline, where she met her

husband, Dick. She took time away from work while raising her kids and then went back to work at Riverdale High School as the Guidance Office secretary. She enjoyed following her grandkids’ activities, playing cards, meeting her friends for breakfast and hosting taco nights at her home. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Rapids City.

MORRISON – The Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network celebrated its 20-year anniversary Nov. 28 and 29 at the statewide conference in Champaign.

Morrison Community Hospital has been part of ICAHN since its inception. ICAHN and its 57 member hospitals make it their goal to preserve access to rural health care while improving the vibrancy and viability of the communities served. Rural hospitals deliver emergency, diagnostic and primary care services to about 1.1 million rural residents living in 60% of the counties in Illinois. Often supporting the “neighbors helping neighbors” concept, rural hospitals also serve as many of the counties’ largest employers, having more than 10,250 employees, 1,250 hospital beds and combined gross patient revenue of $2.1 billion.

This year, the ICAHN Board of Directors selected Morrison Community Hospital CEO Pam Pfister as the recipient of the organization’s highest award, The Presidential Award.

“There is no task too big or small for capable Morrison Community Hospital CEO Pam Pfister,” ICAHN Executive Director Pat Schou said when presenting the award. “She joined the

hospital in 2002 and has served many positions – from clinic director, materials manager, human resources manager, renovations director and associate administrator to being named CEO in 2013. Pam has many talents and is never hesitant to take on new roles and responsibilities for the success of the organization. Morrison Community Hospital is thriving today in its completely renovated hospital building, adding new specialty services every year. She is active in the local business community and developed many new community partnerships for the hospital, especially during the COVID years.”

Pfister has been actively involved with ICAHN since joining Morrison Community Hospital, often attending ICAHN conferences and educational events. She later joined the Trailblazer Group, Illinois Rural Community Care Organization and served as legislative and regulatory chairwoman in 2020.

She helped lead the ICAHN communication efforts during the pandemic, often sharing her hospital experiences on the monthly COVID-19 calls. She was asked to join the ICAHN board in 2021 and continues to serve as the chairwoman of the Trailblazer group and accepted the position as secretary/treasurer and finance chairwoman.

cbielema@shawmedia.com In Whiteside County, Coroner Joseph McDonald, a Democrat, is unopposed in his bid for reelection. No other candidate is listed in the Democratic or Republican race for coroner.

County Recorder Kendra Kophamer Bush, a Republican, also is running unopposed in the primary election. No Democrat is running for the seat.

Colleen Buckwalter, a Republican, is the only candidate on the primary ballot for state’s attorney, a position held by Terry Costello, who is not running for reelection. No Democratic candidate is seeking the candidacy.

Sue Scott, a Republican, is the only

candidate from either party on the ballot for the circuit clerk position. Circuit Clerk Sue Costello is not running for reelection.

1993: City of Fulton files disciplinary charges against police chief 60 Years

An architect’s drawing is being shown on the proposed new school building for Albany Consolidated School District No. 139. Voters of the district will go to the polls Dec. 21 to vote on a bond issue to finance the new structure.

Robert Lockhart has bought the Fulton, Morrison and Albany business of the Loeser Insurance Agency, formerly of Savanna. Loeser, who had a general insurance agency for this area has moved his insurance headquarters from the Savanna area to Galesburg. All policyholders of the Loeser agency now will be served by the firm of Lockhart Enterprises.

50 Years

Dec. 12, 1973

Jimmy Jones received a gold watch from Fire Chief Howard Swanson.

Jones retired from the Fulton Fire Protection District after serving 38 years as a volunteer fireman. Jones is well-known to people in the area having been active in community affairs for many years and the owner of the Phillips 66 service station on the west

end of 10th Avenue.

A dispute that has rocked the Fulton Police Department for several weeks apparently has come to a conclusion with the resignation of E. Ray Haley as chief of police. Haley’s resignation came the same day that results of a lie detector test administered to Haley’s assistant, Sgt. Terry Sparbel, showed the sergeant was telling the truth when he denied accusations of personal misconduct leveled at him by the chief.

Curt Mattan, who attended River Bend schools until his family moved away, and Neal Luker, one of Mattan’s teachers, were among those honored. A slide presentation of the recipient was given before his scholarship was awarded, followed by the introduction of the donor for that particular scholarship, parents of the recipient, teachers and others who were helpful in Mattan winning the scholarship.

Country Orchids won Best of Show with the tree “Iced To Perfection” at this year’s Fantasy of Lights held in the Van Allen Building in Clinton. The tree was decorated by Lori Shear, owner of Country Orchids, and Gail Drolema, an employee. Sponsors were Albany First Trust & Savings Bank, Drives, Inc. and Kelly Heating and Oil. This is their fourth year of winning at the annual event.

Krahn has been on administrative leave for several months during the investigation and the city, aided by Attorney Stanley Jakala, has filed four charges against the officer. Charge 1: Krahn is accused of committing a domestic battery upon his wife and, relating to the incident, improperly discharged a firearm. Charge 2: Because Krahn is accused of improperly discharging a firearm in the Charge 1 incident, he is accused of filing a false report when he contacted the Whiteside Sheriff’s Department, advising the department that his weapon was discharged for the shooting of a skunk when he is accused of firing two shots into the ground.

Charge 3: As a police chief, he was hired to perform services for 40 hours to be paid for 40 hours a week. Based upon allegations, he was paid for 232 hours for which he did not work.

Charge 4: Krahn failed to carry out his duties as administrator by not opening and disseminating interoffice and intraoffice correspondence.

ehinton@shawmedia.com PORT BYRON – Santa arrived on a Rapids City fire truck Friday, lit the village’s Christmas tree, and battled the Grinch to keep the tree lit, but when he started to walk to the library for his typical sit-down with kids and their Christmas lists, one 7-year-old had a couple of questions.

“Where’s Mrs. Santa?,” asked Brayden Tadlock of Port Byron as he walked ahead of Santa with his mom and sister, Makayla, 8.

“She’s home baking cookies,” replied the North Pole resident. “She’s very busy preparing for Christmas.”

But Brayden wasn’t done. “Do you go to China?,” he asked. Santa nodded and continued on to the library, escorted by two toddlers.

The Tadlock family was one of many who came to Port Byron’s downtown on Friday, Dec. 8, to welcome

Santa to town and partake in several holiday activities.

The Children’s Choir opened the event at 5:30 p.m. singing Christmas songs at the gazebo before Santa arrived.

“Now everyone has to help me light this tree,” Santa said to the large and anxious crowd surrounding the gazebo.

With kids helping with the countdown, the tree was lit and Santa was just about ready to head to the library when “he” appeared.

The Grinch slithered up behind the gazebo and with his back to the Mississippi River and under the cover of darkness he sneaked up the stairs, creeped up to the tree, and pulled the electrical cord causing the lights to go out on the tree. He then escaped into the darkness.

But Santa and kids quickly got the tree relit and the night continued.

Santa led a long line of kids from

the gazebo down Main Street to the River Valley District Library where he sat down with his young followers to learn what they wanted for Christmas.

Brayden told Santa he wanted a leopard gecko and promised he’d make sure to take care of the little lizard who would be named “Smallfoot”.

“I will take care of him and I will feed him crickets,” said Brayden, smiling.

Wayleigh Johnson, 7, of Port Byron, quietly sat next to Santa and asked for a teddy bear.

“She keeps changing what she wants,” said her mom who made sure Wayleigh’s letter made it into Santa’s mailbox.

Downstairs at the library, carolers sang Christmas songs and the Friends of Library held a bake sale as a fundraiser.

Down the street at Village Hall, hot cocoa and chicken noodle soup were

served and a Letter Station was set up where kids could write their own letter to Santa.

That’s where Max Brockmann, 10, of Port Byron, carefully made out his list that included bunk beds for him and his brother and a robot.

Next door at the fire station, Jozie Drummond, 7, and her brother, Gabe, 9, of Port Byron, examined one of the Rapids City fire engines. Jozie climbed up to the driver’s seat for a photo while Gabe checked out some of the controls.

When asked if she planned on being a firefighter, Jozie said no, “I want to be a veterinarian.”

“I want to be a firefighter when I grow up,” Gabe quickly interjected.

Friday’s event was held under clear skies with temperatures hovering around 50 degrees – unseasonably warm for Dec. 8.

“The weather is perfect,” quipped one parent.

Rock River Hospice and Home The Rock River Hospice and Home family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to our volunteers, tree decorators, donors, sponsors and community members who helped make the 2023 Festival of Trees one to remember.

Thousands of festival-goers ventured to Northland Mall in Sterling to experience the sights and sounds of the beautifully adorned trees decorated by individuals, families and Nicci Wright businesses from all over northern Illinois.

On the first weekend, Rock River Hospice and Home supporters gathered to celebrate the season and remember individuals and families who were blessed by care and concern received from the Hospice team. Veterans also were honored on that special evening. We love our veterans!

Throughout the week, many placed bids on their favorite tree, table or silent auction display, shopped the Country Store and stocked up on

Northland Mall in Sterling was filled with beautifully adorned trees decorated by individuals, families and businesses from all over northern Illinois.

and played jokes on kiddos of every age. There were so many smiles that day and some were ecstatic to have their picture taken with the adorable ponies.

Holiday STEAM workshop brings youth together The Harvest Time Bible Church in Rock Falls was buzzing with festive energy Dec. 2 as the 4-H Holiday STEAM workshop unfolded.

The workshop, organized by 4-H Program Coordinator Allie Johnston, brought together youths ages 5-13 for a morning filled with crafts, treats, slime-making and holiday coding.

The event, designed to engage young minds in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, proved to be a success, with 50 enthusiastic kids in attendance. The workshop aimed to blend learning and fun, providing a unique opportunity for children to explore various STEAM activities in a festive and creative atmosphere.

Throughout the morning, participants had the chance to craft their own holiday ornaments, whip up delicious treats, concoct slime creations and even delve into the world of holiday coding. The hands-on activities not only sparked curiosity

but also fostered a sense of community as 13 volunteers guided and assisted the young participants in their explorations.

The 4-H Holiday STEAM workshop embodied the spirit of the season, bringing together a diverse group of children who shared laughter, creativity and the joy of learning.

The event showcased the 4-H program’s commitment to providing engaging and educational opportunities for youths in a welcoming and supportive environment.

With 50 kids, 13 volunteers, and a whole lot of fun, the 4-H Holiday STEAM workshop left a lasting impression on the community, reminding everyone that the holiday season is not just about ornaments and treats but also about coming together to celebrate learning and creativity.

My great-grandfather James Fouts was a great coach and teacher for many years. He is an inspiration to the family. He really is a great person. He is a man that is idolized by many. James Fouts is an amazing person because of his childhood, the events of his adult life and many experiences of retirement.

James Fouts is a great person because of his childhood. James is my paternal great-grandfather. James was born and grew up in Prairie, Illinois. He came from a humble background. He lived with and was raised mostly by his grandmother, Lula Dunblazier. James put himself through college, attending Western Illinois University in Macomb.

He graduated in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. While attending WIU, he held various positions such as an officer in his fraternity, president of student council, Homecoming king attendant and Who’s

Who organization. As you can see, James Fouts is a great person because of the experiences of his childhood.

Not only did James’ childhood affect who he was, but so did his adult life.

After college, James married Marjorie LitchField. In 1938, he became a teacher and coach in Liberty, Illinois. He taught high school math and physics and coached high school baseball and basketball. In 1957, James moved to Prophetstown. By this time, he and Marjorie had four children, two sons and two daughters, and were expecting their fifth child.

In Prophetstown, he taught high school math and physics and coached high school football and basketball.

One of his accomplishments in Prophetstown as a teacher and coach was leading the 1962 varsity basketball team to the first-place trophy of the Illinois State Regional Basketball Tournament, the first time in Prophetstown history. The high school students dedicated the Prophetstown 1962 yearbook to the team. They stated in the dedication: “Behind the team stood a man who was criticized more than anyone else, who acted as a gentleman winning or losing and who asked for very little credit, but certainly deserved and received our thanks – our coach James Fouts.” The following year, the Prophet 1963 yearbook also was dedicated to Mr. James Fouts. The dedication stated, “We, the Class of 1963, proudly dedicate our Prophet to Mr. James Fouts, for whom we hold in such high regard both as a teacher and a friend.”

After nine years of teaching in Prophetstown, James moved his family to Lanark in 1966. There he served as the assistant superintendent of the

Lanark School District, which was his first position in school administration.

One thing he was noted for while serving in the Lanark school system was starting the sport of wrestling in high school. It is obvious that James’ adult life and all the lives he touched during this time helped him be a great person.

Then he and his family moved back to Prophetstown. By that time, the three oldest children had graduated high school, leaving the two youngest to finish their school years in Prophetstown. Here he served as the superintendent of schools. While living in Prophetstown and after retiring, he also served as a temporary superintendent of schools in both Morrison and Fulton for a short period of time.

When he retired, he moved to Lake Carroll, Illinois. While there, he served as president of the Lake Carroll Homeowners Association. He and his second wife, Ruth Sisler, lived there until his death in 1966. James lived a full and fulfilling life. At the age of 71, he officially retired.

James had lots of hobbies. For example, he loved cooking, traveling, fishing and flying a small aircraft because he had his pilot’s license. He was very involved with whichever community he and his family lived in. He was a mentor to many high school students throughout his career as an educator and coach. He strived to ensure his children had a good upbringing and were involved with social activities such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, band, piano lessons and church activities.

Later in life he always hosted family holiday celebrations, ensuring that all of our grandparents had a place to go and could spend time with their grand-

About 7:43 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, the Morrison Police Department received a call of a male subject sleeping in a truck in the parking lot at 606 E. Lincolnway. children, which also gave us the opportunity to see them. He loved fishing and they used to take family vacations to Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota. He also used to lead a group of Prophetstown and Lanark friends to Lake Nungesser in Ontario, Canada, for many years. He loved that lake. My grandmother Cathy also recalls the summer before he died, she and my Grandpa Bradley, along with my dad and uncle, were able to take a vacation with him to Lake Nungesser. After he died, they returned to that lake several times. They buried some of his ashes on one of the islands and placed a marker with the words “Fouts’ Gap” as that was his favorite fishing spot on the lake. She also recalls how when she or her siblings needed cheering up, he would say, “Look on the bright side as the sun will shine tomorrow.”

My reflection to this project is that I learned a lot about my great-grandfather and what he did and also that he was a great person and all the things that he did, I do feel closer to him because I know his story and I didn’t before and I should learn more about my family history. I really liked this project and how it taught me about my great-grandfather James Fouts.

After a long life, it is clear that James had a huge impact on other people.

James Fouts, my great-grandfather, was a great person. James’ childhood contributed to being the great person that he was. Additionally, his adult life also impacted the person he was.

James’ retirement and later years also played into the amazing man he was.

“Look on the bright side as the sun will shine tomorrow,” as James always would say.

Erie Middle School students were challenged to pick an ancestor or someone else that they could research and learn more about to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

Students enjoyed getting to know more about their families and many were surprised to learn how interesting their families were. We hope you will enjoy their stories, too!
