the walls have weakened, there is no way of returning the intestine to its original condition. The keys to avoiding diverticular disease is to start early in life, eating plentyof fiberand watching the fats, sugar and salt. Your doctor may provide a listof high fiber foods.Plenty of liquids also areadvisable waterbeing thebest. Having regular bowel movementsis felt to be helpful. Heavy laxative use, how ever, is discouraged. Your doctor may be able to give you medications that will helpyourbowelsworksmoother.
Diverticulitis means an inflammation or infection of these pouches. This may occur when the necks ofthe diverticula become swollen from infection or injury from a passing bowel movement or from trapping material inside and not moving itthroughthe colonfastenough.
Signs and symptoms of diverticulitis
include pain, often in the lower left por tion ofthe abdomen, nausea, fever and swelling of the abdomen, and diarrhea or constipation may be present. Occasion ally blood is seen in the bowel move ment.
Diagnosis often is made by the history of your illness as well asphysical findings. Blood counts may be helpful. Occasionally an X-ray examination of the colon is performed, though, sometimes a delay ismade until after the inflamma tionhascalmeddown.
During the acute phase of an illness, clear liquids are used. Your doctor may then advanceyour diet through stages, and you should follow those directions carefully and report any flareups in pain, increasein temperature, passage of blood in bowel movements, more swell ing of the abdomen, vomiting or other
changes in your condition. It is import ant that a laxative not be taken. Often times, physicians advise that seedy prod ucts be avoided during an acute infection of diverticulitis, however, thisis no lon ger felt essential. Hospitalization is sometimesnecessary for diverticulitis and occasionally surgery may become necessary.Your doctor also may want to do an exam with an instrument to look in thecolon(sigmoidoscopy).
Recent updates suggestholding anti bioticsfor mildcases.
In summary, diverticular disease is largely related tothe types of diets we have. Diverticula can be prevented to some degree with high-fiber foods. Once diverticula are present, infection, bleed ing and other problems may occur. For such problems, you should notify your doctorimmediately.
