Hayden Musser signs with Sauk Valley

Riverdale High School senior Hayden Musser signed his letter of intent on Jan. 4 to play golf at Sauk Valley Community College.

“Hayden has been an important part of a run of great success here at Riverdale. He played varsity all four years of high school, where we won four conference titles, four regional titles, three sectional titles, state third place, state runner-up, and a state title,” Coach Trent Groves stated. “It’s been a pleasure getting to coach you, and seeing you grow as a golfer and a person the last four years. Your Riverdale family is excited to see what the future holds for you.”

Hayden is the son of April and Ken Musser of Port Byron; his siblings are Landis and Conner. He plans on majoring in welding and/or law enforcement.

Board hears from new Superintendent

Erie Village Board met new Erie Superintendent Chuck Milem who introduced himself during the Jan. 12 vilalge board meeting.

During public comments, Milem introduced himself and spoke about his plans to work with the board on new and ongoing projects.

In other aciton, the board approved the purchase of 2017 Wacker RD 12A-90 compact street roller, plus a 3-month warranty, from United Rental of Clinton, Iowa at a cost of $13,519. They also approved a revision of the overnight parking ordinance, adding a snow route from 8th Ave. from the alley to 8th St. A contract with Tom Border of Mown-Snow in Erie for mowing at the Erie Cemetery in 2021, at a rate of $1,050

per mow was also approved. The work includes mowing and weed-eating to be paid per job, as opposed to a yearly rate since it depends on the weather and cemetery conditions.

The board also discussed making changes to the current raffle ordinance and social media policy, as well as creating an ordinance to regulate cannabis business establishments.

VILLAGE OF HILLSDALE

Hillsdale unanimously approves new auditor

The Hillsdale board unanimously approved hiring a new auditing firm during their meeting Jan. 19, after their 3-year contract with Christopher Vershaw, CPA ended at the end of March.

The board approved a proposal from Hoffman & Tranel, PC for three fiscal years, at a cost of $4,990 per year. The firm will complete the annual audit and financial report, and assist with QuickBooks should any issues arise. The firm is familiar with municipal auditing and uses QuickBooks software, Village Clerk Jane Lundquist noted.

Trustees next reviewed and approved an ordinance prohibiting the deposit of debris on village streets, culverts, and

ditches to help ensure the proper flow of water in Hillsdale. Residents will receive the information in their next sewer bill.

They also discussed the trees along the north end of Docia Street - some need trimming, some need to be removed, and many are leaning over.

If and when those trees fall, damage could potentially be done to the dike, along with trees or branches laying across the street.

Traffic along there, especially school buses, also have a hard time getting over near the edge of the street because of the low branches.

As a preventative measure, the board approved a $6,800 bid from Coers Custom Hardwood for nine tree trims, eight large tree removals, and 45 small tree

removals. The proposal is for clearing trees six feet from the edge of the road, so the trees shouldn’t be an issue along there for quite some time. The work is expected to begin soon.

The board next agreed to have Village AttorneyVirgil Thurman prepare paperwork to deed the village-owned property at 307 Main St. to Alan Black, who owns Black Fabrication in Hillsdale.

His plans are to make improvements and bring in another business.

Finance chair Joni Reiss informed the board that the budget will be discussed at the February meeting and approved at the March meeting.

She requested committees get their figures and project ideas to her as soon as possible.

James J. Field of Fulton, will be celebrating his 100th birthday on Feb. 3.

He was born in 1921 and was raised in Fulton. After graduation he attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, then entered the Navy in 1941. He started off as a Midshipman, then Ensign,

COLLEGE NEWS BHC students join Phi Theta Kappa honor society Black Hawk College welcomed 21 students into the Quad-Cities Campus’ chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society during Fall 2020.

Phi Theta Kappa is recognized as the official honor society for community colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges.

To be eligible for membership, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Local inductees are Zailey Grenno, Lyndon and Jay Dykstra, Morrison.

Kirkwood announces Dean’s List honors Kirkwood Community College has released its Dean’s List for the fall 2020 semester. These students have achieved a 3.3 grade point average or higher after completing 12 or more credit hours at the college.

Kirkwood students from the area earning this distinction are Claire

Lieutenant JG, then Lieutenant.

He was serving during WWII and experienced D-Day. He was on the Satterlee Destroyer.

After his service, Field worked for ITT- International Telephone and Telegraph company in New York City for the majority of his adult life, which also included a 10-year stint in Brussels.

This led to his lifelong passion for travel, the arts, and fine dining with friends, colleagues, and family. He loves music and plays the organ. Golf is another passion, along with reading and attending church services.

He is even still driving! He generously shares his time and experiences with his loved ones. Field is affectionately known as Uncle Jim to his three nieces, four nephews, two great-nieces, and one great-nephew.

Joe and Judy Bell to observe 60th wedding anniversary Joe and Judy Bell of East Moline, are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on Jan. 28.

Joe and Judy were united in marriage at The Little Brown Church in the Vale, Nashua, Iowa, on January 28, 1961.

They’re family incudes two sons, Chris and Joe Jr. and daughters-inlaw, Karla and Mary, five grandchildren and a sweet great-grandson.

Joe taught at Riverdale High School for 35 years. Judy worked at American Honda in Davenport for 30 years.

They attend Church of the Cross in Port Byron.

Now that the candidate filing deadline has passed, Whiteside County Clerk Dana Nelson has compiled a list of candidates, with many uncontested races. The candidates will appear on the ballot of the Consolidated Election to be held on April 6.

For the Village of Albany, candidates for Village President are Steven Dyson and Edwin Welch, and Jessica Kuebel for Village Clerk.

Six candidates filed for three trustee positions: Joyce Tegeler, Michelle Butt, Brandi Lee Tiesman, Richard “Floyd” Boston, Mark Totty, and Wiley Blasdell.

For one unexpired two-year term, Jason Watts and Phillip Lemke will be on the ballot.

For the City of Fulton, Kevin Wright and Wendy Ottens will be on the ballot for Mayor. For Alderman Ward Two, Harley Hunt is the only candidate, as is Sue VanKampen for Ward Three. For Ward Four, Teresa Decker and Paul Banker will be vying for the seat. No candidates filed for Alderman Ward One and City Clerk.

For River Bend School District, Brandon Snyder, Jane OrmanLuker, Dan Portz, and Eric Fish are on the ballot for three four-year term positions. For the Morrison Board of Education, Dustin Damhoff and Brian Witt filed for one of three open four-year seats.

Voters will get to decide on whether to levy a .025% tax on a taxable property in Morrison, for the purpose of reconditioning and restoring neglected cemeteries which are owned, managed, and/or controlled by the city.

Citizens can still run as a write-in candidate, but they must file a form at the Whiteside County Clerk’s office by Feb. 4.

OBITUARIES BETTY M. PRESCOTT MORRISON – Betty Margaret (Nicklaus) Prescott, 89, of Morrison, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, at Resthave Home in Morrison.

There will be no services, and cremation rites will be accorded. The Morrison chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is assisting the family.

DONNA L. VILARDI PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida – Donna L. Vilardi passed away peacefully at home in Port St Lucie, Florida, on January 7, 2021.

She was born in 1931, the daughter of Herman and Laura Stralow (Schumacher) of Morrison. Donna was a loving, caring lady dedicated to helping young people, which she did by teaching at Avery Coonley School and at Westmont Junior High School in Illinois. Donna enjoyed singing in the church choir.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Vilardi; sons, Michael Vilardi, Peter Vilardi and Kent Fuka; daughter Kim Krech (Fuka) and their families. She also leaves behind her sister, Arlene Hazlett and family.

Interment will be at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison.

PAUL A. THOMAS ERIE – Paul A. Thomas, 80, of Erie, died Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Allure of Prophetstown where he had been a resident.

A memorial visitation was held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Erie. A private family memorial service followed.

Paul A. Thomas was born September 25, 1940 to Wayne “Eddie” Thomas and Ella (Sohrbeck) Thomas. He was a very accomplished carpenter all of his working life. He loved children, animals and being outdoors.

Paul married Carolyn Hook on Febru-

ary 28, 1981 at the Erie United Methodist Church where both are members.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Justin and grandchildren Brandon, Samantha and Tiffany; daughter, Ashley and her spouse, Cassie and grandchildren, Zachary, Jayden and Anna; sisters, Beverly Frohling and Eula Seger of Erie, Dorothea Daw of Milledgeville; brother, James of Moline; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Christopher; sisters, Ola Mae Bleitz, Ruth Abshire; and brothers, William Thomas and Rev. Robert Thomas.

RICK TEMPLE FULTON – Rick Temple, 64, of Fulton, died Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at MercyOne Clinton in Clinton, Iowa.

A private family funeral service will be held at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Fulton with Rev. Kevin Ver Hoeven officiating. The funeral will be livestreamed on Bethel Christian Reformed Church’s Facebook Page and will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29. A public visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, Jan. 28, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church. Masks and social distancing will be enforced. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton.

The Fulton chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials have been established to Unity Christian Schools, Bethel Christian Reformed Church, and World Relief.

Rick was born May 15, 1956, in Clinton, Iowa, to Ronald L. and Vangie L. (Kophamer) Temple. He was educated in the Unity Christian Grade School and was a graduate of Fulton High School.

He attended Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, and was a graduate of Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Rick married Mary L. Kay on Aug. 14, 1976, in Fulton. He was a teacher at Unity Christian Schools in Fulton and Erie Middle School in Erie. Rick coached basketball throughout his teaching career. He was a member of Bethel

Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and small group leader.

Rick loved being a member of the Praise and Worship Team at the church. He was a member of the Fulton Country Club and was an avid Fighting Illini fan. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. Rick was a volunteer teacher at World Relief.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Lynn (Dr. Paul) Veldhouse of Brookfield, Wisconsin, and Erin (Mawi) Asgedom of Elmhurst; one son, Ryan Temple of Caledonia, Michigan; 12 grandchildren, Titus, Reuben, Abram, Niya, and Naomi Veldhouse, Sawyer, Brynn, Simon, and Griffin Asgedom, and Isabelle, Olivia, and Lucas Temple; three brothers, Randy (Lois) Temple of Litchfield Park, Arizona,Terry (Denise) Temple of Fulton and Marty (Danette) Temple of Oswego; his stepmother, Lorraine A. Temple of Fulton.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ronald was born on February 21, 1934 in Whiteside County, the son of August and Elsie (Taber) Meier.

He was employed as a farmer for 20 years, and later worked at Whiteside County F.S. until retiring in 1996.

Ronald was a member of FirstLutheran Church in Prophetstown.

Survivors include two daughters, Roxane (Scott) Gluff of Prophetstown and Ronda Davison of Morrison; one son, Randy (Lisa) Meier of Morrison; three brothers, Larry Meier of Surprise, Arizona, Raymond Meier of Winslow, and John (Alice) Meier of Shabbona; five grandchildren, Coty Gluff and Erica (Cory) Heaton, all of Prophetstown, Jessica Sloan of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Brandon Meier and William Meier, both of Morrison; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert Meier.

Cremation rites will be accorded. Per Ronald’s wishes, no services will be held.

RORRIE J. KRAMER FULTON – Rorrie Joseph Kramer, 42, of Fulton, passed away Sunday, January 17, 2021 after a brief battle with glioblastoma brain cancer.

He was born January 12, 1979 and married Bridget Bentrup on November 8, 2013. He was employed at Elkay Manufacturing Company for over 20 years.

Rorrie started as an operator on the assembly line and held many positions during his career at Elkay. He was recently promoted to manufacturing manager over the Savanna and Lanark facilities. He was extremely proud that he recently completed his master’s degree with high honors from DeVry University.

Rorrie was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and loved playing basketball. He loved taking his Trans Am for a drive on a warm sunny day with the T-tops off, with his wife and his companions, Bella and Buster, along for the ride. Rorrie enjoyed gambling and playing cards. He loved to visit Las Vegas and the gambling boats.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Bridget; stepdaughter, Hannah; brother, Rob (Teresa) Wagner and their son, Joseph; sisters, Rachel (Timothy) Honquest, Raegen (Brian) Weins; mother-in-law, Jil Tague; grandfather-in-law, Bernie Vogel; sisters-in-law, Holly (Randall) Price, Taylor (Kurt) Mangels, Charis (George) Phillips; aunts, Heidi (Tim) Wright, Wendy (Tom) Bahl; uncle-in-law, Mark (Dawn) Dingmon; nieces and nephews, Charles, Chloe, Hunter, Adam, Harley, Lylah and Gavin; and cousins, Jeramy Hennessy and Hollie Lay. He was predeceased by his mother, Roxanne Elliott and grandfather, Robert Wagner.

Allison Winkel takes part in virtual production Allison Winkel of Fulton was part of the cast and crew from Baldwin Wallace University that, under the direction of Victoria Bussert, created the first collegiate virtual production of the powerful Broadway rock musical “Spring Awakening.”

Winkel, a graduate of Fulton High School majoring in music theatre, played the part of Ilse in the co-production between the BW Conservatory of Music’s music theatre program and the department of theatre and dance.

While many college theatre stages went dark for the fall 2020 season, the BW creative team proved music theatre can thrive within the limits of a coronavirus safety net.

The groundbreaking show, shot guerrilla film-style on iPhones at

more than 40 locations throughout Northeast Ohio, premiered November 19-22 and was profiled in American Theatre magazine and The New York Times. Due to demand, a second set of performances streamed December 17-20.

Directing and capturing the performances of two full casts while protecting against the threat of COVID-19 required ingenuity, determination and a delicate balance. “Spring Awakening” is one of an extensive number of performance experiences providing realworld opportunities for students at Baldwin Wallace University. Tampico teen ID’d as driver killed in crash on Prophet Road

The driver who died Jan. 18 after colliding with a semi tractor-trailer on Prophet Road was 17-year-old Alexandria N. Cannavo of Tampico, Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald confirmed in an email.

Cannavo lost control of her car going around a curve and collided with a Rock River Lumber and Grain semi driven by Ricky J. Chapman, 61, of Fenton, around 9:30 a.m. on Prophet just west of Luther Road, the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office said. The car then caught fire.

Chapman had no time to take evasive action, and no citations are pending, the sheriff’s release said.

Cannavo was a senior at Erie-Prophetstown-High School, where she was a straight-A student and played softball and basketball.

She also worked at the Break Room Pub N Grub in Tampico and Little Caesars in Rock Falls.

“Alex was smart, independent, and a hard worker,” the Break Room posted on its Facebook page.

“We truly have never met another 17-year-old like her. We will miss her witty comebacks, her sarcastic tone, her constant ability to make us laugh and help others.”

Her softball teammates also are mourning.

“Alex - we will forever keep you in our hearts,” the EP Panthers posted on their Facebook page.

A plan by the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fulton, to revitalize and beautify the downtown area, will get underway, with the announcement of an Illinois First Grant in the amount of $50,000 to be used towards the project. The streetscape project was first introduced by the Chamber in October of 1999 when members saw the need for upgrading the downtown area.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested and charged Alberto Weatherby, 35 of Rock Falls, with disorderly conduct.

Weatherby was released on a notice to appear. This incident remains under investigation.

On Tuesday, Jan. 19, at approximately 1:09 p.m., Skyler D. Briggs, 31 of Sterling, was arrested pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by Lee County, charging Briggs with contempt. Briggs was released on a notice to appear.

Back to Books grant to benefit Southside Elementary library

For the second time in four years, the MCUD #6 libraries have won the Illinois State Library Back to Books Grant.

The first time, in 2018, District Librarian Jennifer Stevenson submitted a winning grant proposal for the Morrison High School library, receiving $2,000 to purchase 50 new graphic novels and 38 new nonfiction titles to update and add to the library’s collection.

Most recently, in 2020, Stevenson’s winning proposal secured $1,300 to purchase 130 nonfiction titles to update and fill in the blanks in the Southside Elementary library’s collection.

This grant, along with grants received in the past from the Morrison Schools Foundation, has allowed the library to continue a years-long effort of making nonfiction more popular and appealing among Southside students.

Books purchased include graphic novel adaptations of historical events and people like the Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales series, as well as more books in the already popular You Wouldn’t Want… series that includes titles such as, You Wouldn’t Want to Be In a Medieval Dungeon! and You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Gravity!

According to Stevenson, these types of books let students read and learn about history, science, animals, and important people in a fun and interesting way.

The effort is paying off. In the last two years, some of the most often circulated books in the Southside library are from the nonfiction section.

These are just a few of the 130 nonfiction titles updating the Southside Elementary library’s collection.

CFAP eligibility expanded USDA has expanded eligibility for some farmers and commodities through the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP). Some payments will also be updated to accurately compensate some producers who already applied for the program.

Producers who are now eligible and those who need to modify existing applications due to the updates can contact USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) until Feb. 26.

Some of these changes are being made to align with the recently enacted Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 while others are discretionary changes being made in response to ongoing evaluation of CFAP. Contract producers of swine, broilers, laying hens, chicken eggs and turkeys who suffered a drop in revenue in 2020 as compared to their 2019 revenue because of the pandemic now are eligible for assistance. Producers could receive up to 80% of their revenue loss, subject to the availability of funds.

Similarly, FSA adjusted the payment calculation to use the producer’s eligible 2019 calendar year sales, and 2019 crop insurance indemnities, NAP and WHIP+ payments, multiplied by the applicable payment rate for all sales commodities, which include specialty crops, aquaculture, specialty livestock, nursery crops and floriculture for CFAP 2. Producers who applied during the sign-up period that closed Dec. 11 can modify

an existing CFAP 2 application until Feb. 26.

Additionally, FSA adjusted the payment calculation for certain row crops for CFAP 2, specifically those for which a producer had crop insurance coverage but not an available 2020 Actual Production History (APH) approved yield.

FSA is now using 100% of the 2019 Agriculture Risk Coverage-County Option benchmark yield to calculate payments when an APH is not available rather than 85%, which was in the original CFAP 2 calculations. This calculation change is only for producers with crop insurance coverage who grow barley, corn, sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers, upland cotton and wheat. Producers who applied during the sign-up period that closed Dec. 11 can modify an existing CFAP 2 application until Feb. 26.

FSA is also providing an additional CFAP 1 inventory payment for swine producers who face continuing market disruptions from changes in U.S. meat consumption due to the pandemic.

Swine producers with approved CFAP 1 applications will soon automatically receive a “top-up” payment of $17 per head, increasing the total CFAP 1 inventory payment to $34 per head.

Newly eligible producers who need to submit a CFAP 2 application or producers who need to modify an existing one may contact their local USDA Service Center. New applicants can also obtain one-on-one support with applications by calling 877-508-8364.

“As our business has grown and evolved, we saw a need to provide a scholarship to students throughout the United States and Ontario, in addition to the scholarship programs already established in our core geography,” said Amy Bradford, GROWMARK corporate communications manager and GROWMARK Foundation manager. “GROWMARK and the FS member cooperatives are strong supporters of youth leadership education and this is one more way we can contribute to the future of agriculture.”

Applicants must complete an online application which includes academic information, community service and leadership activities, and essay questions regarding agriculture and cooperatives.

Applications will be judged by a panel of agribusiness professionals.

My hobbies are shopping, hanging out with friends, doing gymnastics, and traveling.

What have you learned from this pandemic?

I have learned to accept change and also adapt to it, because it can happen at any sake of time.

How would describe your leadership style?

I am one that loves to have fun and make people feel less awkward. I think it is really important to be comfortable when you are in a leadership position so that my mentees can have someone to look up to.

Fulton High School food drive successful

Fulton High School held a food drive in order to raise money and collect food around the holiday season. This food drive was put together by Student Council members and B.L.I.N.D. All four grade levels were able to contribute food items, with the senior class leading all donations.

Toward the end of the drive, there was a very generous donor who chose to help and add to the over $1,200 in monetary donations.

Fulton High School thanks you for your generosity and help, and helping us give to the Albany and Fulton food pantries for the holiday season.

The free community Wednesday night drive thru meals continue this Wednesday from 5:30-6 p.m.

This week’s menu will be Swedish Meatballs, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans and Chocolate Cake. Please enter the church parking lot from the north alley and remain in your cars.

Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA) Dr. STEVEN D. HARRISON, M.D.

Many people with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, ALS, multiple sclerosis, and even Alzheimer’s may have a condition which their emotional reflex is seemingly disconnected.

These individuals may be prone to involuntary outbursts of crying or laughing that do not match up the patient’s emotional state.

The outbursts are often sudden and intense and may happen several times a day lasting from seconds to minutes. The difference with PBA and depression is that depressed people feel depressed and express that mood, whereas those with PBA do not feel depressed but may appear to others that they are because of crying, etc. Some experts feel it may affect up to one to two million people, though many remain undiagnosed.

The exact cellular cause remains

unknown, but it is felt there is a disruption between the cerebral portion that interprets the emotion and the reflex portion beginning in the cerebellar region. Patients are often aware of this disconnect, but still unable to control it.

Often times mood medicines are employed, however, only if there is actual coexisting depression or other treatable mood will then be affected.

It is important for families to recognize these responses and develop brief statements that indicate the process is understood and accepted.

Recently, Nuedexta has been released which appeared to have some benefit. This medication actually combines two older medicines, Dextromethorphan and Quinidine, in a special combination.

Occasionally there is diarrhea, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, welling or other side effects.
