Port Byron’s new trustee was sworn into office on Monday, April 4, after the board approved Mayor Barb Cray’s appointment of Tami Marsden to fill the seat vacated by Stacey Getting, who was elected for a four-year term in the April 6, 2021, election.

Marsden introduced herself to the board, saying she’s lived in Port Byron for just over a year after previously living in Hillsdale. She works at home for a bank in Chicago and has two daughters and a grandchild on the way.

Cray also announced that Jamie Fritch of Port Byron has been hired as part-time office staff and she’ll be working up to 15 hours a week, assisting with utility clerk and office duties.

In infrastructure updates, MSA engineers reported that Miller Trucking & Excavating have been grading and preparing for new sidewalks, steps, curbs and driveways between 94th Avenue to 11th Street. The expected completion date for the IL 84 sidewalk project is now May 27.

MSA submitted a funding request to IDOT earlier this year and Port Byron was awarded

MSA engineers also are preparing a 2D concept for a parking lot on the Blackhawk Bank property and will complete a 3D rendering and cost estimate for the final recommended concept.

Engineers also are designing a dual parallel parking concept chosen by the Downtown Development Committee, with a review meeting to be scheduled

this spring.

MSA will be presenting a contract at the April 18 meeting for the water system study, which will include a draft scope of the work, contract proposal and overall project budget. The report can be used to secure state and federal funding assistance. MSA is also working on the lead water services inventory and replacement report, which is expected to be completed this month.

Tammy Knapp with the Tug Fest Committee announced that planning is underway for the festival’s 35th year. The carnival contract has been signed, and

the committee has been sending out sponsor letters and lining up bands. They hope to get new ideas and volunteers for kids’ activities.

In action items, the board approved a bid by Bob’s Blacktop for $28,750 for road repairs on Bluff Street, which they hope to start this week, weather permitting. Public Works Supervisor Don Loy reported that the Linn Street lift station pumps recently went down due to reverse polarity, so they’ve ordered repair parts. Loy said it could cost up to $27,000 for a new pump so their preference is to repair the 1960s pump that “runs like a champ.”

The board also discussed the adult Easter Egg Hunt that was Saturday, April 9, in the downtown and the Port Byron Easter luncheon that was April 7 for residents age 60 and older in the village. They also addressed the recent report of higher manganese in the village water supply by assuring residents that if the water was unsafe, the EPA would have to shut it down.

Cray said that “each state sets the standards for testing, and the allowable amount varies from state to state. The federal EPA has no set limit at this point.”

2022 Illinois tree planting initiative rolling out The 2022 Illinois tree planting initiative is a pilot community partnership project funded by the Illinois Forestry Development Council, University of Illinois Extension and Association of Illinois Soil & Water Conservation Districts (AISWCD).

The initiative is coordinated by Extension 4-H, AISWCD Forestry Committee and Rock Island County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD).

Each participating district was allocated 25 trees to plant on a public site within the county. Rock Island SWCD is one of 31 counties participating throughout the state, with a total of 775 trees being planted. Trees provided include 10 Jackiana Oak, five Bur Oak, five Black Oak and five Red Oak. In addition, Xylem graciously donated the mulch to be used for planting sites.

The Rock Island Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Directors chose Illiniwek Forest Preserve Dis-

trict as their site for the 2022 initiative. This site is adjacent to an existing restoration/reconstruction project Illiniwek has been working on for the past five years and will enhance this project even further by increasing tree diversity and wildlife benefit on a previously grassed area.

Additionally, the purpose of this year’s project is to educate youth and community members on the value of native oak forests and trees to Illinois. Educational signage will be included at the site, which will be located at the east end of the campground area adjacent to the Mississippi River. There is an existing mowed trail through the site for viewing.

Volunteers with Revitalize Erie, a nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the Erie community, have plenty to keep them busy lately, such as springtime events, Sesquicentennial planning and park renovations in the heart of the downtown triangle. But when small business owners invest their time and resources into the community, the group is more than happy to celebrate their accomplishments and welcome them with ribbon-cuttings, refreshments, raffles and a message that “it takes a village to make things happen.”

On Monday, April 4, Revitalize Erie members celebrated the relocation of Misfeldt Family Chiropractic to 1331 12th St., the former Take One Hair Studio.

Dr. Amanda Misfeldt, a 2004 Erie High School graduate, first opened her practice at 904 Albany St. in February 2011, then moved it to 808 Main St. in 2016.

She’d been leasing, so when a building became available, she decided to finally purchase a place of her own. She closed on the property on Jan. 31 and after two months of remodeling the space, which also includes a rental apartment, she’s proud of how it turned out. Dr. Misfeldt lives and works in Erie and is excited to stay in the community and invest in her growing practice.

On Wednesday, April 6, Daniel Hawkins had a ribbon-cutting for Sauk Valley Law Group and Country Financial in the historic Knights of Pythias building at 724 Main St. Visitors enjoyed grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, salads, cake and raffle prizes. Hawkins has had a law office for 15 years but started as a Country Financial representative on Jan. 1, 2022. Arrests On Saturday, April 2, about 1:35 a.m., Morrison police conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Wendy L. Davis, 56, of Morrison in the area of North Jackson Street and East Lincolnway for a moving violation. As a result of the stop, Morrison police arrested and charged Davis with speeding and driving under the influence (alcohol). Davis was transported to the Whiteside County Jail, processed and released on a notice to appear.

ISP District 1 activity for March

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Capt. Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for March.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 324 citations and 442 written warnings and made 16 criminal arrests

during the month of March. Speeding accounted for 170 citations. There were 26 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated 14 traffic crashes, assisted 102 motorists and conducted 86 commercial motor vehicle inspections, 14 of which were placed out of service for safety reasons.

There were six arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle and Whiteside counties, investigated one fatal traffic crash in March.

RCFPD monthly report for March

Volunteers with the Rapids City Fire Protection District responded to 42 calls for assistance in March. A breakdown of those calls: Village of Rapids City – Five EMS calls

and one traffic accident.

Village of Port Byron – 11 EMS calls.

Fire Protection District (Rural) – 15 EMS calls, two traffic accidents, two structure fires, one field fire and one brush fire.

Automatic aid was given to the Hillsdale Fire Department for one traffic accident, one power pole fire, one field fire and one structure fire.

The Morrison Emmanuel Reformed Church’s Voices of Praise invites the area to celebrate as it presents EVOP’s 13th annual spring cantata “We Will Stand!”

Performances will be at 7 p.m.

Friday and Sunday, April 22 and 24, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23.

Voices of Praise is excited to be back after canceling the past two spring cantatas because of the pandemic. The stage will be filled with 75 singers who will present music from a variety of genres. Contemporary worship songs such as “Who You Say I Am,” “Jesus,” “Build My Life,” “Is He Worthy” and others are examples of music heard on Christian radio stations such as K-LOVE. Songs that encourage during difficult times will be presented including “Just As I Am/I Come Broken,” “I’ve Put My Hope in God” and “I Will Stand.” Also included are new songs that encourage Christians to go out and spread the good news. As you listen, there will be times when

some of you will want to clap your hands or tap your feet, others will simply smile, and most of you, at some point, will have tears in your eyes.

Soloists joining the choir will be Ed Pruis, Ritch Lindstrom, Pam Muur, Lynelle Criss and Brittany VanDrew. Anna Ryder will serve as a narrator.

No tickets are needed for the 70-minute concert. There will be a free-will offering. All ages are welcome and the church is handicapped accessible. A fellowship hour hosted by the women of Emmanuel will follow all performances.

A free shuttle bus will be provided one hour prior to and following all three performances. The shuttle bus will pick people up from Ebenezer Reformed Church’s parking lot just two blocks south of Emmanuel’s campus and drop people off at the curb in front of Emmanuel.

Couch to 5K training returns to Prophetstown Park District

Who is ready to get up and moving after the long, cold winter?

The Prophetstown Park District Rec Center is ready to help thanks to the return of the Couch to 5K training program.

The goal of the eight-week program is to give you a jump-start and lead you on the path to complete the Prophetstown Run Around 5K on July 2. Training starts May 7 and ends on race day. Training days are still to be determined based on the group and leader availability.

OBITUARIES CHERYL COCKING Born: February 5, 1923 Died: March 31, 2022

Cheryl Cocking of Grinnell, Iowa, passed away on March 31, 2022, at the age of 99, after a short battle with cancer. She spent her final years at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, where she received wonderful care.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 5th, at the Grinnell

Christian Church.

Born: December 27, 1955 in Moline, IL Died: April 4, 2022 in Sterling, IL BRIAN K. LANPHERE, 66, of Lyndon, IL, died Monday, April 4, 2022 at Rock River Hospice and Home in Sterling, IL. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at the Bosma-Gibson Funeral Home in Prophetstown, with Rev. Dalmus Meeks officiating. There will be a memorial visitation prior to the service, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM. Cremation rites have been accorded. Interment will be at a later date, at the Sharon Cemetery in Spring Hill, IL. A memorial has been established.

RHEA D. MILNES

Born: December 14, 1931 in Prophetstown, IL Died: April 6, 2022 in Freeport, IL Rhea D. Milnes, 90 of Milledgeville, died Wednesday, April 06, 2022 at Walnut Acres Nursing Home in Freeport.

Rhea was born on December 14, 1931 in Prophetstown, the daughter of John and Hazel (Ackerman) Clary. She married Vernon S. Milnes, Sr. on February 18, 1948 in Morrison. He preceded her in death on March 12, 2014. Rhea worked at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Mount Carroll for 20 years.

She was a member of Chadwick Hope United Methodist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Peggy

in the Erie, Illinois Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be designated to the Grinnell Christian Church.

The funeral services will be live-streamed on the Smith Funeral Home and Crematory Facebook page beginning at 9:45 a.m.

Cheryl Arlene Hoerler Cocking was born February 5, 1923, in Erie, Illinois, the daughter of Sam and Theresa (Greth) Hoerler. She attended grade school at Mineral Springs country school and Erie Community High School, both in Erie, Illinois, graduating in 1940.

Cheryl attended Moline Community Business College in Moline, Illinois. She worked as bookkeeper at Beck Jewelry & Optical Company, Moline, Illinois, Clerk-Typist at Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois, served as a Radioman 2nd class of the W.A.V.E.S. (U.S. Naval Reserve) during World War II, and worked as a bookkeeper for Erie Co-operative Elevator, Erie, Illinois. After ten years of not working outside the home, she worked as Secretary at Elizabeth Community

School, Elizabeth, Illinois, Private Secretary at Kable News Company, Mt. Morris, Illinois, Clerk-Typist at The State University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and Bookkeeper/Credit Manager at Richardson Lumber and Supply, Inc. and Vosburg Building Center, Grinnell, Iowa, from which she retired in 1985 after 25 years.

She was Broker/Owner of Cocking Realty, Grinnell, Iowa, and worked in real estate for 28 years.

Cheryl married Harold Wayne Cocking of Erie Illinois, on August 9, 1947, in Erie, Illinois.

He passed in 2007. They have two sons, Jim (Mary) Cocking of Fairborn, Ohio and Kent (Laurie) Cocking of State Center, Iowa, and one daughter, Sherri (Jim) Barns of Bella Vista, Arkansas. They have six grandsons, James (Korey) Cocking of Brookville, Ohio, Chad (Tiffany) Cocking of Canton, Georgia, Brian Barns of Knoxville, Arkansas, Mike (Jessica) Barns of Joplin, Missouri, Aaron (Kristie) Cocking of Albertville, Minnesota, and Shane (Natalie) Cocking of Albertville, Minnesota,

and one granddaughter, Kristin (Jeremy) Cooper of West Des Moines, Iowa. She also has 20 great grandchildren.

Cheryl was an active member of the Grinnell Christian Church where she was the chairman of the library committee for many years, taught Sunday School, including youth and adult classes, and sang in the choir until she became the pianist for the Senior Choir for 25 years. She was also active in many organizations where she was Past President of Junior Women’s Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 50 years, a member of the Poweshiek County Board of Realtors, the Iowa Association of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. Cheryl was the State Director of WAVES National for 5 years, starting the first 6 units in Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister and brother, and one great grandchild.

Lanphere. He was educated in the Prophetstown grade schools and was a 1975 graduate of Prophetstown High School. On August 10, 1979 he married Marjorie “Marge” A. Rick in Morrison, IL. Brian was a machinist for many years and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, IL. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping, fishing and gardening. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

James I. Hanson of Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Albany, Illinois, has died in Round Rock Texas.

Jim was born July 16, 1947 in Clinton, Iowa to E. Don Hanson Sr. and Irene E. (Hansen) Hanson and graduated from Albany Grade School and Fulton High School.

An Army combat veteran, he trained as a paratrooper and served in Viet Nam as a helicopter crew chief and machine gunner.

The state treasury is expecting a $1 billion deficit this year. The shortfall was caused by a deteriorating economy prior to the Sept.

An extra $4,500 is allowing Dutch

Basic tips for the treatment of dog, cat and spider bites

BY STEPHEN D. HARRISON, MD With the number of pets in our society, bites from dogs and cats are not uncommon. Here are some basic tips for treatment.

With either a cat or dog bite, the wound should be gently washed with soap and water. To stop bleeding, pressure should be applied with a clean towel to the injury followed by a sterile bandage to the wound. Keeping the injury elevated above the heart will help slow the swelling and lessen the chance of infection. The incident should be

reported to the proper authority, police or animal control officer. This helps to ensure tracking is done to certify that the animal has had sufficient shots to protect against rabies, etc.

In general, dog bites are cleaner than cat bites. Cat bites may be prone to infection and one should seek medical attention for these bites. On the other hand, cat scratches are not significant unless the wound becomes infected. Cat scratch disease, which gets a lot of hype, is not common. Dog bites on the hand, feet, head or that cross a joint can be particularly significant. Someone with deep and

gaping wounds should immediately be taken to a physician. Those with debilitating conditions such as diabetes, emphysema, liver disease, AIDS, etc., and those who have weakened ability to fight infections also should be seen.

The classic signs of infection include redness, swelling, warmth, increased tenderness, oozing of pus from the wound or fever. Also, bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes of pressure should receive further attention by a physician. One should make sure that their tetanus shot is up to date. Generally 10 years is sufficient, thought with

deep wounds, five-year updates are sometimes given.

Spider bites also get a lot of hype and attention. Most spider bites are harmless. Unless there is strong suspicion of brown recluse spiders or some of the more threatening type, the harm of treatment, while rare, might exceed the benefit.

One caveat to keep in mind is a fair number of people go to the physician with an infection that was presumed to be a spider bite. Such infections may be serious staph infections known as MRSA.

Morrison Music Theatre Association has been granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. After a long and complicated application process, MMTA is officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity. This means individual donors and businesses can deduct contributions to the group on their tax returns. MMTA is also able to receive tax-exempt bequests, transfers and gifts.

Achieving tax-exempt status has been a longtime dream of the organization, but it was former MMTA president and current treasurer Eric Phend who spearheaded the project. After many months of hard work, official sta-

tus was awarded to the group in March.

“We hope that this tax-exempt status will encourage individuals and businesses to contribute to MMTA. Increased funding will allow us to grow and continue in our mission to present quality theatrical productions to the people of the Sauk Valley area,” Phend said.

The next MMTA production will be “Steel Magnolias.” The show, originally planned for March, has been rescheduled for June 3, 4 and 5 and will be presented at Morrison Institute of Technology. Ticket and performance information soon will be released.

Twenty-one students were inducted into Morrison High School’s chapter of the National Honor Society on Wednesday, April 6, during an evening ceremony in the high school’s auditorium.

Students were selected based on academic credentials (3.5 grade-point average or higher); their leadership in school and community activities; their solid character; and their service to others.

New inductees consisted of 17 juniors and four seniors. Morrison High School seniors who were selected last year as juniors took active roles in the ceremony.

The evening began with a procession of students into the auditorium, followed by a welcome and introduction of current members by Morrison High School Principal Cory Bielema.

Illinois soon could track which school districts don’t comply with Illinois Threat Assessment Law Shaw Local News Network Illinois House Bill 4994 is awaiting the signature of Gov. JB Pritzker after passing both chambers of the General Assembly.

The legislation, which was initiated by the Illinois Education Association, would track which Illinois school districts are not in compliance with the Illinois School Threat Assessment Law. State Reps. Tony McCombie, R-Savanna, and Fred Crespo, D-Hoffman Estates, worked with the Illinois Education Association to sponsor the bill.

“In a situation like what happened in Michigan, the threat assessment team would have been called upon and intervened to get the student the help they needed b e f o r e t r a g e d y Tony McCombie occurs. That is the intent of this law,” McCombie said. “The children of our state are our most important asset. We must ensure threat assessment plans are not only created but reviewed and

followed to keep our students safe.”

The Illinois Education Association in 2019 initiated the legislation, and the Legislature passed the School Threat Assessment Law. Here’s what the law does is: • Expands the use of the 1-cent county sales tax to include school safety improvements, school resource officers or mental health professionals, or allow a district to issue bonds, borrow money or find other ways to pay for similar needs.

• Instructs schools to develop a threat assessment team and a threat assessment protocol.

• Calls for each district to review each school building’s emergency and crisis response plans, protocols and procedures and the makeup of its team.

• Requires school districts to implement a threat assessment procedure that may be part of a school board policy on targeted school violence and prevention, which must include the creation of a threat assessment team made up of specific people.

• Requires each district’s assessment team to include mental health professionals as well as representatives from state, county and local law enforcement agencies.

Considine Holiday Art Gallery in Fulton features Easter exhibits

Vintage Easter and spring exhibits can briefly be seen at the Considine Gallery, 201 10th Ave. in Fulton, with the gallery opening on Easter Sunday, April 17, from 2 to 6 p.m. and on following Sundays in April from 2 to 4 p.m.

The gallery features about 20 handmade and elaborate fine art holiday pieces made before 1950. The displays range from detailed castle scenes to thatched roof prints to vintage Easter scenes.

In December, the gallery will primarily contain the fine arts of Christmas past, with vintage art from up to the 1950s.

The current Easter and spring displays are interim exhibitions – perhaps never to be set up again in completeness once

The Duchesses scored 101 points to finish behind only Sherrard (131) in a five-team meet at A.C. Bowers Field in Dixon. Fulton took third with 60 points, Rock Falls finished fourth (47), and Kewanee was fifth (28).

Fulton swept the hurdles races as Emery Wherry won the 100 highs (17.98 seconds) and Lara Bielema took the 300 lows (51.76). Bielema was second in the 100 highs (17.99). Abbigail Thyne, Mikayla Gazo and Lauren Mahoney teamed up with Miraya Pessman to win the 4x100 (52.97), and were joined by Annaka Hackett to win the 4x200 (1:54.32).
