The long-awaited continuous water loop went into operation in Rapids City on Tuesday, Feb. 15, but the board delayed a portion of the contractor’s payment after the project came in $152,456.52 over budget.

At their meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 8, the board learned that water samples were submitted for final approval before the water loop could open. They approved a payment of $407,000 to contractor McClintock Trucking and Excavating of Silvis, but delayed payment for additional change orders, calling a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 16, for further discussions.

The water loop has been in the works for years to limit service interruptions for residents north of Route 84, or those on the “river side” of the highway. With only one water main servicing the neighborhoods, any water main issues meant all households west of the tracks could be without water. The water loop ensures continual service plus better water quality and pressure for all residents, Village President Harold Mire Jr. said. The board approved a contract bid of $537,904 last year, with boring under Route 84 and the railroad tracks required for the project.

Chris Cooper with engineering firm MSA Professional Services discussed the additional costs at the Feb. 16 meeting, reviewing 11 change orders requested by McClintock that pushed the project significantly beyond budget. Ten of the change orders were due to a change in the drilling technique and ranged from increased cost of materials, more project oversight, OHSA requirements for construction techniques and additional excavation. One change order already was approved in November.

Additionally, the village will need to monitor the railroad track’s elevation for six months after the water main installation and finish landscaping after the spring thaw.

Out of 11 additional change orders, the board voted to deny three and tabled the others, pending discussions with McClintock, the village’s legal counsel, and MSA representatives. Those denied included increased charges for changing the drilling technique, increased costs for materials due to the contractor’s delay in acquiring insurance, and payment for an additional pit dug on private property and outside the original easement, done without the village’s awareness or consent.

Mire said the village wants due process and closure, but they need to justify the

additional costs with the village taxpayers.

He called for negotiations with the contractor, noting they were previously hired by the village for another project. He cited the “miscommunication” as a factor in the additional charges. “We don’t want the village to get raked over the coals,” he said, with Cooper agreeing that the project scope didn’t go as planned due to “poor communication.”

In other action at the Feb. 8 board meeting, the board approved an $11,000 payment to MSA for a water main extension study and bidding process. In infrastructure updates, the board learned that a USACE permit for work on a culvert project expires in March, and IDOT will be conducting an environmental survey for the 17th Street infrastructure project.

The board also approved the annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt for Sunday, April 3, from noon to 1 p.m. at the park, though it could be moved to the civic center if weather is inclement. A shredding and e-waste drop-off was set for Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the civic center parking lot. Trustee Carolyn Fowler said due to general lack of interest, there will be no community cleanup this year. The board also approved a Microsoft 365 upgrade for the office computers.

Albany hears presentations from two energy companies

The Albany village board heard from representatives of two energy companies at their meeting on Monday, Feb. 7.

The village currently has a contract with Alliant Energy for wholesale supply.

The presentation centered around the company’s transmissions, clean energy vision for the future and range of services offered such as community support, emergency response and helping customers meet their needs. “We hope to serve Albany for years to come,” said Michael Greiveldinger, senior manager.

Jo Carroll Key Account Manager Ken Sivertsen said a wholesale power proposal was first presented to Albany in 2018, which consisted of energy use analysis, net metering and day-to-day operations and service agreements. The process got delayed with COVID-19, though the energy cooperative provided an updated proposal to former mayor Steve Dyson and current mayor Phil Lemke last year.

The two companies use different generation sources, and the board agreed to look

over the costs and benefits of keeping or switching providers. Trustee Floyd Boston said the board was “nowhere near making a decision,” and would need to analyze the numbers before moving forward. Village Attorney Bill Shirk said he would get copies of the agreements for an independent review before continuing discussions.

Steve Haring with MSA Professional Services next discussed a proposal for the village to supply municipal water to 3M. More analysis, planning and discussions are needed since the village would have to upgrade and double the capacity of facilities, equipment, treatments and storage.

3M would require 50 to 100 gallons of water per minute, with Albany’s new well providing 140 gallons per minute. The company is “willing to foot the bill for improvements,” Haring said. The board approved a study to look at cost estimates, with further discussions planned.

In other action, the board approved a bid by Central Tank Coatings for water tower cleaning and maintenance over the next nine years at an overall cost of $280,450. The cost includes $109,060 for tower blasting inside and out, then $21,000

They also approved spending $950 for an electric hookup for a generator at the maintenance shop, and signed a resolution to use $53,952.50 in Motor Fuel Tax funds for seal-coating of roads. They agreed to apply for a grant for energy efficient upgrades at the wastewater treatment plant for “much needed repairs.” They accepted the resignation of deputy clerk Kerry Leahy, approved a request for the United Methodist Church to hold Easter Sunday services at the marina, and agreed to purchase plaques to recognize citizen contributions to the village.

Whiteside County 4-H hosts Saturday scrapbooking in March and April

The University of Illinois’ Whiteside Extension office and Whiteside County 4-H are offering a scrapbooking SPIN club on select Saturday mornings during March and April.

Kenneth was born August 2, 1928 in Ustick Township, Whiteside County, IL, to Clarence and Anna (Balk) Bielema. He attended a one room school known as Hartman School near Chadwick, IL. He then attended Thomson High School in Thomson, IL. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Kenneth married Jacqueline S. Brondyke on October 26, 1951 in Fulton, IL. She died April 2, 2000. In 2003, Kenny met Marilyn Mutter and enjoyed eight years together until she died on April 22, 2011. As a young child, Kenny’s family moved to a farm near Chadwick. They then moved to rural

Thomson. He worked on his father’s farm until 1951, when he met the love of his life, Jacqueline. After Kenny’s discharge from the Army, he worked on farms until 1965 when he moved to Fulton and was employed at General Electric in Morrison, IL, until 1990 when he retired. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he was on the church’s council and was a member of the Fulton American Legion Post #402. He enjoyed the many trips he took with Marilyn and his morning coffee at Sunrise Restaurant in Fulton. He was an avid toy Farmall tractor collector. Kenny also enjoyed the company of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Russell (Sandie) Bielema, Steven (Pam) Bielema and Jon (Deb) Bielema all of Fulton; twelve grandchildren, Carrie (Kurt) Fanderclai, Jessica (Jay) Johnson, Philip (Julie) Bielema, Jason (Christine) Bielema, David Bielema, Amber Bielema, Joshua (Tamara) Bielema, Holly (Rocky) Burden, Nicole (Justin) Fletcher, Matthew (Theresa) Bielema, Rachel Bielema and Jacob Bielema; twenty-one great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Venema of Fulton and Esther (David) Ebbers of Morrison; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Marjorie Bielema of Fulton and Mrs. Doris Bielema of Morrison.

Albany Food Pantry. Pat was a den mother for the Albany Boy Scouts, a member of the Fulton Boosters and was involved in PTA when her children were young. She served on the Albany Chamber of Commerce and was the head of blood drives. Pat was on the Parks and Recreation Committee for the Village of Albany. She volunteered for the MercyOne Hospital Auxiliary for 25 years. Pat was on the Albany First Trust bowling team in the local bowling league. She loved gardening, tending to her yard and making sure the birds and squirrels were always fed. She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and she kept stats for every game. Pat cherished spending time with and attending the sporting events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Terry was born on July 17, 1964 in Clinton, IA, a son of Arnold (Arky) and Sara (Sally) Wiebenga. He married J’ne Augspurger in 1989. Surviving are his sons, Adam Augspurger and Caleb Augspurger, both of Normal, IL; his mother, Sally Wiebenga, of Fulton, IL; sisters, Dawn (Dean) Petrie of Galesburg, IL and Susan (Joel) Quiram of Princeton, IL; and nephews Cole Petrie, Cade Petrie, and Blake Quiram; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins. His

He spent his entire career at State Farm Insurance in various roles within Enterprise Technology. Terry was an active member of Mennonite Church of Normal and enjoyed serving there, as well as volunteering with various organizations throughout the community.

A memorial service was held onFebruary 19, 2022 at Mennonite Church of Normal. Burial was in Funks Grove Cemetery.

Arlene was born on November 26, 1923, in Erie, the daughter of Lawrence and Maude (Kieber) Perkins. She attended Erie Schools and graduated Erie High School in 1941. Arlene played the flute in the band and played many solos for groups. After high school, she attended and graduated from Moline Business College. She was then employed with Old Farmers Merchant Bank in Hillside for 2 years. Arlene then worked at CBQ Railroad Freight in Moline for 3 years.

The visitation will precede the service starting at 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be at Leon Cemetery in Prophetstown.

Carol was born February 7, 1928, in Sterling, IL, to Ralph and Hazel L. (Lane) Winkler. She was educated in the Centerville Elementary School in Leon, IL, and the Hoopole Grade School in Hoopole, IL. She was a graduate of Metropolitan Church Association in Waukesha, IL, and she later received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL. Carol taught elementary special education for 26 years. She was a teacher for three years at Dillon School

She was a Cub Scout and Brownie Leader as well as Sunday school teacher. Arlene enjoyed golfing, sewing, crafts, playing cards, genealogy, baking and going to lunch with her friends. She was a former member of Prophet Hills Country Club, Historical Society, Wesleyan Fellowships and Prophetstown United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Behrens of Prophetstown; one son, Brian (Julie) McNeill of Columbia, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Sarah McNeill of Clemson, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Jason McNeill, John McNeill, Ann Coughlen, Randy Behrens, Cody Behrens, Steven McNeill and Kevin McNeill; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Joyce Briggs; and one son, Kent McNeill.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were completed by the McDonald Funeral Home in Prophetstown.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She enjoyed gardening, music, and writing letters to family and friends on a daily basis.

She loved anything fuzzy with four legs. Carol also enjoyed watching all professional sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bulls Fan, but her favorite team was always the winners.

Survivors include one niece, Cheryl (Mark) Patterson; two nephews, William (Beverly) Brown, Jr. and Douglas (Lisa) Brown; one foster niece, Marlyss (Ronald) Fisher; one foster nephew, Kenneth Fullick; many great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin sister, Gladys Winkler and sister, Harriet (William) Brown, Sr.; one brother, Ray Winkler in infancy; one foster brother, Harvey Fullick; one foster nephew, Leon Fullick; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The Clinton Symphony Orchestra returned to Morrison High School’s auditorium on Saturday, Feb. 19, treating guests to “A Symphonic Menagerie” during the first of its kind afternoon performance for the annual concert.

Organizers wanted to account for the unpredictable winter weather and draw in more children and were able to do both by moving the evening performance to an earlier time. They set a record with 47 children in attendance, more than double from previous performances. The Clinton Symphony Orchestra Association aims to bring the concert experience to a younger generation, while ensuring safe travel to all who wish to attend, calling the Sunday afternoon concert an “experiment.”

The symphonic performance was organized by director and conductor Brian Dollinger and featured selections with animal themes, much to the delight of the children and adults in the audience. The concert included “The Thieving Magpie,” a waltz from “Swan Lake,” Leroy Anderson’s “The Waltzing Cat,” the “Flight of the Bumblebee,” and “Carnival of the Animals” by French composer Camille Saint-Saens, complete with duo pianos.

Individuals work hard to save enough money to purchase their homes. And the hard work doesn’t end there. Once homeowners settle into a new home, they may set their sights on renovations that suit their individual needs. And even when buyers find a home that needs no such work, maintenance requires homeowners’ utmost attention. All that hard work is perhaps one reason why seniors may be a little reluctant to downsize as they advance through their golden years. In addition to the sweat equity homeowners put into their homes, all the memories they’ve made within their walls can make it harder to put a home on the market. Downsizing is a difficult decision that’s unique to each homeowner. Seniors who aren’t quite certain if downsizing is right for them can consider three key factors to make a decision that’s in their best interests.

COST: Perhaps no variable affects senior homeowners’ decisions to downsize their homes as much as cost. No one wants to outlive their money, and downsizing to a smaller home can help seniors reduce their monthly expenses by a significant margin. Even homeowners who have long since paid off their mortgages can save substantial amounts of money by downsizing to a smaller home or even an apartment or condominium. Lower property taxes, reduced insurance premiums and the need to pay for fewer repairs are just some of the ways downsizing can save seniors money.

SPACE: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

MARKET: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

It’s never too early for adults to think about estate planning. Estate planning is an important part of money management.

A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. Fenton middle schooler shares Space Camp experience from last summer Carter Shepherd, 12, of Fenton graduated from the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, last summer. The weeklong program promotes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) while training students with hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.

Carter, a sixth grader at Erie Middle School, served as a scientist on the ISS (International Space Station) with Team Cepheus, selected by his crew leader. Carter enjoyed everything about Space Camp, and he loved the Moonshot ride the most. The crew participated in experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity, or spacewalk.

Space Camp uses astronaut training techniques to engage trainees in real-world applications of STEM subjects. Students sleep in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and train in simulators like those used by NASA. Carter met a retired astronaut, Matt Mason, who

helped build the ISS and told the campers about his missions. Carter also learned about upcoming missions that NASA is working to complete.

Carter was incredibly thankful for the opportunity to represent Erie Middle School and the state of Illinois at Space Camp, while joining the ranks of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp alumni. Besides STEM education, Carter enjoys football, baseball and Boy Scouts. His souvenirs from the adventure include a certificate, latches, pin, photos and a rocket launcher.

Space Camp is designed for those with an interest in space exploration. Almost one million trainees have graduated from a Space Camp program since its inception in 1982. According to the organization, children and teachers from all 50 states and almost 150 international locations have attended a Space Camp program. The Rocket Center is a Smithsonian Affiliate and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center.

The Fulton boys basketball team secured the NUIC South title and set a new school record with 27 wins with an 88-57 victory over Milledgeville on Feb. 14 in Fulton.

The Steamers (27-3, 11-0), who are ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, led just 18-17 after the first quarter, but stretched the margin to 40-30 by halftime, then outscored the Missiles 26-13 in the third quarter and 22-14 in the fourth.

Sportsman’s banquet is Saturday THOMSON – The Sportsman’s Banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 26, at Majestic Pines in Thomson.

Organizers are raising money for local conservation activities. The midwinter Sportsman’s Banquet is hosted by the Mississippi Flyway chapter of Waterfowl USA and is aimed at returning the money raised to local wetland conservation.

This year’s banquet will have items of interest for deer hunters, duck hunters and coyote hunters.

The chapter encourages hunting families to attend the banquet and sets up games for children to play to win items. A raffle also will take place.

“Hunting families will enjoy the banquet as kids will receive decoys and a chance to win hunting guns,” volunteer Ron Kaufman said. “What drives the banquet is the members themselves. Many generous sportsmen and members of the conservation group donated extra toward the kids raffles. As many as seven youth guns will be awarded to young hunt-

ers on Saturday night. Also, the very young will get a chance to win BB guns.”

Adam Johnson from Miles, Iowa, has volunteered to run the auction during the event. Wildlife art, barn wood art, figurines, decorative decoys and sporting goods will be sold. A black lab female pup from Barn Ridge Kennel will be on Johnson’s list to sell at the banquet.

“The AKC lab will make someone a pet and hunter and comes from good bloodlines,” Kaufman said.

“To welcome our guests, Eric Engaldo will serve as the emcee for the event. Eric is a fellow waterfowler and will add a lot of excitement to the night.”

Banquet doors open at 5 p.m., and organizers have lowered the price this year to help keep the banquet affordable,” Kaufman said.

Fulton Junior High is implementing a motivational and incentive program called Natural Helpers. Efforts by Ben Deutscher, Guy Pidde, Aaron McQuistion and Kris Mitchell started the Natural Helpers program. The purpose of the program is for students to help other students.

At the Fulton City Council meeting, approval was given to light two intersections in the city to help motorists avoid accidents. Approved was the installation of a light on the corner of 31st Avenue and Fourth Street and another to be installed on Route 84 and 22nd Avenue. A motion to install a light on South Fourth Street at the Route 30 west ramp was tabled.

It was standing room only at the River Bend School Board meeting as two representatives of Western Illinois University explained the study they submitted about combining the sixth

through eighth grades of Albany Grade School with the middle school in Fulton.

The university representatives recommended combining the classes in Fulton because of declining enrollment.

Supports of Schmaling (S.O.S.) received a check from the D.S. Flikkema Foundation at its quarterly meeting. The check was presented to S.O.S. President Joan Johnson and Library Director Britni Hartman by Connie Koehn from the Fulton Association for Community Enrichment (F.A.C.E.).

The grant is to cover costs for science and history books for children, genealogy resources, science, health and travel books for adults, and a replacement security monitor.

Volunteer millers at de Immigrant windmill will host their second monthly program. All miller programs in the 2012 series are designed to complement Fulton’s tourism theme, “River Connections.” Ronald Koehn, retired social sciences instructor, will present a PowerPoint program titled Abraham Lincoln’s River Connections.

The diagnosis and treatment of pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis is examined

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Pancreatitis is an occasional occurring condition that can mimic other intestinal conditions, and because it is generally less frequently encountered, it may be attributed to other conditions. The symptoms are typically severe abdominal pain often radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, bloating and decreased appetite.

In more advanced cases, the heart rate and respiratory rates are increased. During the physical examination, there is usually tenderness in the upper part of the abdomen and may mimic ulcer disease and gallbladder disease, and in fact, often coexist with these diseases.

Because many doctors train at certain types of medical centers, they may be biased to think alcohol is the most common cause of acute pancreatitis. It is a common cause, but the most common cause is gallstones getting into the common duct and irritating the head of the pancreas. Other causes include markedly elevated triglycerides, mumps, extremely high calcium and scope procedures known as ERCP. The condition also may be

seen in pregnancy as it relates to the triglycerides in some women. Rare conditions include autoimmune pancreatitis, which is a condition in which the body’s immune system overresponds and attacks organs.

Occasionally medicines may contribute to the condition although these are not common. Nonetheless, they do occur with some commonly used diuretics such as furosemide or Lasix, hydrochlorothiazide, etc. Also, certain seizure medicines and chemotherapy agents are sometimes involved. There is a genetic component for some people, as well.

The diagnosis may be difficult, especially initially, but is considered when there is severe abdominal pain that does not respond or mimic the other more common conditions. Blood tests such as serum amylase or lipase may be ordered and imaging studies such as ultrasounds or CAT scans.

There are some conditions associated with a better or worse prognosis depending on what side of the line one falls on. In someone older than 55, there is a worse prognosis or a markedly elevated white blood cell count or elevated blood sugar along with

elevated liver enzymes. After a time period of fallen hematocrit, or what is commonly reflected in the iron count, a rise in certain other kidney functions, a drop in calcium, or a drop in oxygen also are unfavorable signs.

Complications of the condition can include shock, dehydration, pneumonia and even death.

Treatment is aimed at keeping the gut at rest and providing adequate pain relief. Co-existing conditions such as acid peptic disease are treated along with gallstones, etc., if present.

When one begins eating, dietary fat is restricted. In the acute phase, an NG tube, which is put through the nose into the gut, is sometimes employed to theoretically lessen the irritation coming from the gut. This is a time-honored treatment, although not largely proved. Unfortunately, when all appropriate measures are applied, some people will continue to have repeated bouts of the condition.

Chronic pancreatitis is separate from the above as it is a longstanding inflammation of the pancreas that alters its function. This often leads to malabsorption of certain food products such as fats, which may contrib-

ute to a foul smelling diarrhea and frequent nausea. Diabetes is often seen in complication due to the lack of enzymes normally manufactured by the pancreas that work to control diabetes. Some patients may feel very sick, while others manage simply by enzyme replacement. Weight loss is common. About two-thirds of the cases are caused by chronic alcohol though other causes contribute, as well. Even anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin, Aleve and steroids have sometimes been invoked as causes. A common source for children is cystic fibrosis. In other parts of the world, the protein energy malnutrition is a common cause. In chronic pancreatitis, the above studies amylase and lipase may not be elevated. Certain tests such as secretin stimulation, certain stool measurements and serum trypsinogen may be employed.

The treatment of chronic pancreatitis is to replace the enzymes that are missing from the normal function of the pancreas. Unfortunately, this may not change the pain reduction. In more extreme case, surgery may be involved.

Brock Smith won the 132-pound state title with a 2-1 win in a tiebreaker (double OT) over Dakota’s TJ Silva.

Collin Altensey won the 152-pound state title with a 6-1 win over Stillman Valley’s Jack Seacrist.

Alex Watson finished fifth at 160 pounds with a 9-0 win over Murphysboro’s Dayton Hoffman.

“I’m really stoked,” Altensey said.

“I came in knowing I could do it but I wanted to take each match one at a time. It worked out. I knew he was going to come hard to the head and pound my head. I just wanted to go underneath and it worked.”

The win made for a perfect season for Altensey. “I went 47-0. That’s always good,” Altensey said. “I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and teammates. I came into this tournament not thinking about my record. If you’re worried about that, you’re going to take people for granted.”

Among other area competitors, Polo had a pair of medalists with Wyatt Doty taking third at 126 and Daniel Engel sixth at 285.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Jase Grunder was fourth at 145, and Fulton’s Zane Pannell was fifth at 170.

“We brought two and they were both top six. I’m so happy,” Polo coach Jesse Culbertson said. “A lot of people see these kids out here and think it’s so individual. But with their practice partners pushing them and the kids in the room, it’s a team sport. A lot of people don’t realize that.”

Doty, an Eastland junior, won his third-place match with a late takedown against Carson Bissey of Richland County, holding on for the 4-2 win.

“I knew I got to go, keep pushing him,” Doty said. “He was pushing me.

We were going at it. I secured my sweep, got the two. Then I knew I had to hold him down, just 10 more seconds.”

The Eastland girls basketball team knocked off Morrison 50-39 Feb. 15 in Lanark to advance to the Class 1A Eastland Regional final against Galena.

Galena ended Eastland’s season with a 47-32 win Feb. 17.

Against Morrison, Eastland got momentum on its side midway through the first quarter with a 7-0 scoring run.

Morrison shook off the slow start, using a 6-2 run in the final 2:30 to cut the margin to 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. Jordan Eads and Camryn Veltrop scored back-to-back baskets in the final minute to complete the run.

Early in the second quarter, the Fillies continued to apply pressure. About 35 seconds in, Diana Robbins drove from the right wing into the right side of the lane, looping around a crowd on her way to a layup. The shot made it a onepoint game at 13-12.

Eastland was able to widen its lead to 18-12, but Morrison fought its way back to within 18-16 with a Robbins giveand-go layup in the middle of lane that was assisted by Shelby Veltrop. Morrison later closed the deficit to 21-18 after

In the last 1:01 of the first half, the Cougars stretched their lead to seven points, pulling ahead 25-20.

In the third quarter, Morrison chipped away at the deficit until it took a 33-32 lead with about 2:20 to play. Eads hit a top of the key 3-pointer with about

three minutes left to pull Morrison to within 32-31. Shelby Veltrop got a steal moments later, the Fillies set up their half-court offense, and Camryn Veltrop scored the go-ahead basket off the glass from the left side of the lane.

“In the first half, our defense was probably killing us the most,” Shelby

Veltrop said. “They had two girls that were hurting us pretty bad, so we switched our defense and we got our defense a little bit better. And then we ran our offense better, too, so I think that helped.”

Eastland was able to get the lead back at 37-34 by the end of the third quarter, but Morrison wasn’t backing down.

For most of the fourth quarter, the game was tightly contested. The Cougars got some energy around the 3:50 mark, extending the lead to 41-34, but Morrison answered quickly.

With 3:33 remaining, Robbins hit a free throw and Shelby Veltrop put back the missed second shot, drew a foul and completed the three-point play to cut Eastland’s lead to just four points at 41-37.

Over the final two minutes, however, the Fillies got in foul trouble and gave up two backbreaking offensive rebounds.

Morrison was led by Shelby Veltrop with 13 points, three rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Eads had 11 points and two rebounds. Robbins tallied eight points for the Fillies, while Camryn Veltrop pitched in six points and six rebounds.

Riverdale board approves bids for summer projects

The Riverdale Board of Education held a brief meeting Thursday, Feb. 17, to approve bids for three summer projects.

Superintendent Josh Temple wanted to ensure materials get ordered and delivered on time, especially with concerns about supply chain issues.

“We hope to get these projects finished this summer and not carry over into the school year,” he said.

The board approved bids for HVAC installation at the elementary school, corridor ceiling replacement at the high school and roofing replacement for sections above the kitchen at the high school and above the co-wing at the elementary.

The lowest bid of two for the HVAC and corridor was Loescher Heating & Air Conditioning of Freeport.

The elementary project will replace a 1960s boiler with new heating and cooling rooftop units.

Temple said if the current boiler

goes out, the building will be without heat. Contractors will keep the boiler active until the new system is ready to be swapped out.

The high school corridor project consists of replacing the 2x4 ceiling tiles with 2x2 tiles and installing LED lighting. The total cost for the HVAC and corridor projects is $801,600. Temple said $596,625 of the funds will come from ESSER II and a matching $50,000 maintenance grant, leaving the district about $200,000 left to cover.

The lowest of four roofing bids was Economy Roofing of Bettendorf, Iowa, at $200,224. The company has done previous work at the school, Temple said. The high school will be completed first, as the elementary wing has a concrete deck and would be less disruptive if the project was delayed into the school year.

Total costs for all summer projects were estimated at $1,025,930, with the district to cover $429,306.

The board unanimously approved the bids, with the hopes of meeting the summer timeline.
