“Especially for the people living in the neighborhood. They live in your own backyard. I’ve known so many people that were surprised that this is even a thing that happens, but it’s quite the spectacle.”

At Clinton Community College, presentations from conservation groups were offered.

“It’s quite the special event,” Albrecht said. “We have representation from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, local conservation groups, Master Gardeners and all sorts of folks here today really to get people oriented with the event.”

Kevin Zidarich, a park ranger and member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, echoed that sentiment.

“I’ve been involved with nine of the eagle watches here in Clinton. We’ve always tried to make it a family-friendly oriented program,” Zidarich said. “We try to get several different organizations each year and we offer the opportunity for people to learn new things about birds of prey and whatever other program we offer at the time. It’s just an open forum for folks to ask questions or see what is going on with the Mississippi River.”

Events this year included presentations celebrating the centennial of the Wildlife and Fishing program, lectures on amphibians and presentations with live raptors including a barn owl, a red-tailed hawk and Thora the bald eagle.

“I’m thankful that people are here spending time to learn about commu-

nity, connection and conservation,” Albrecht said. “We’ve had tons of people ask what our 100-year celebration looks like. We have a kids fishing clinic

The eagles did not disappoint Saturday when they showed up for the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge’s 100th anniversary at the 40th annual Bald Eagle Watch.

The program, originally scheduled for Jan. 17 and hosted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was postponed to February when Mother Nature swept the region with a frigid winter storm.

One of the concerns that organizers had in delaying the event was the fear that fewer eagles would be at the nearby Lock and Dam 13, north of Fulton, for spectators to see.

Jacquelynn Albrecht, a park ranger with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and host of the day’s program, said that concern was unfounded.

“The last I heard from some of our naturalists, we have 60 eagles at the Lock and Dam right now,” Albrecht said during the event.

In addition to the raptors, plenty of guests turned out for the event. Activities also took place at Clinton Community College across the Mississippi River in Clinton, Iowa.

During winter months, eagles take advantage of the unfrozen water created by man-made dams to hunt for fish. Hundreds of eagles can be found skimming the waters of the Mississippi, but as the ice melts, the eagles seek other foraging areas.

“When the winter was so cold the river froze, that was when the eagle view was really best,” said Mary Schabilion, a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Paul Winer, one of the hosts and naturalists at Fulton, also had been concerned the eagles would not be as visible as they were last month.

“I didn’t expect to see any here this morning and there are about 20 at the moment,” he said. “If you look at the tree directly across from us and look at all white spots, every one of those is an eagle.”

Bald eagles sometimes can be hard to spot because they don’t gain their distinctive white head until they mature at about 5 years old.

“They go from almost solid brown in their first year and start getting patches of white when they are almost adults.” Winer said. “Their eyes are brown as juveniles and they change to their yellow coloring. That is why people mistake them for the golden eagle.”

Winer made sure to point out eagle nests along the river line at Lock & Dam 13. The event is designed to teach visitors about bald eagles.

cbielema@shawmedia.com MORRISON – A Morrison woman is opening the doors to a new downtown storefront Feb. 24, but, admittedly, it’s not one that will bring cash through the door. Instead, the payoff for Lori Snow will be knowing she assisted others who need help as they experience life transitions or find themselves financially struggling.

The store’s name – God’s Will Giving Center – reflects that instead of sales being the driving force, all items in the store will be given out free. The store’s inventory of clothing, kitchen items and furniture was derived through community donations.

“For so many years I’ve wanted to do this,” she said, adding the store is meant for those who are in a major life transition, in a financial hardship or low income, or getting back on their feet, such as after a house fire.

The store at 126 E. Main St. is a longtime dream for Snow. She and her husband, Dave, have owned rental properties in Morrison and Sterling for several years. During that time, she has worked with the YWCA of the Sauk Valley to help find housing for those who are transitioning out of the YWCA’s shelters.

Also during that time, Snow found herself going to garage sales to buy items that people may need when fur-

nishing a residence. She found herself tucking those items away in her Sterling storage garage, bringing them out when she heard someone needed something.

“The need is there,” she said. “People are struggling.”

Snow, a 1987 Morrison High School graduate, learned through a Realtor friend that a Morrison Main Street building was for sale, leading Snow to buy it and commit to turning it into a

place those who need help can get it.

She put a call out for donations to stock the store.

“The community, they have been wonderful,” she said of the donations – some new, some gently used – she has collected over the past few months as she built up inventory. “Whatever anyone wants to donate, I’ll take.”

She credits her friend, Tonia Ernst, for creating birthday kits that include a disposable pan, cake mix, frosting

and candles, which will be given out free. When Snow mentioned she’d like to have Bibles available, friend Randy Muur donated some.

“For this to work I’m always going to need the community,” she said.

The store will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, and will be open those same hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

STERLING – It wasn’t a particularly long retirement for former 14th Judicial Circuit Judge Stanley B. Steines.

Steines, whose last day on the bench in Morrison was Dec. 31, has joined Sterling-based law firm Mertes & Mertes, managing partner James W. Mertes announced Feb. 14.

“The transition from serving on the bench to private practice is thrilling for me,” Steines said in a statement. “I am proud to be joining such a

highly regarded law firm.”

Steines, a judge for 17 years, followed the same path as former Whiteside County State’s Attorney Gary L. Spencer, 74, who has been Stanley B. Steines with the firm for nine years and was the county’s top prosecutor for 31½ years before stepping down in December 2012.

Before being elected circuit judge in

2006, Steines, 59, was a Whiteside County assistant state’s attorney under Spencer.

“It is an incredibly high honor that Judge Steines has joined our firm,” Mertes said in the statement. “Judge Steines has a tremendous reputation for outstanding legal knowledge, unyielding fairness and extraordinarily high ethical standards. We are so very fortunate now to be working with him.”

Steines will be the firm’s seventh attorney, joining Mertes, Spencer, Magen J. Mertes, Cristina M. Buskohl, Derek Bushman and Mitchell R. John-

ston at the office at Mertes Center, 4015 E. Lincolnway.

Among legal matters, the firm handles criminal defense, driving under the influence and traffic violations, medical malpractice, personal injury and divorce and custody cases throughout the Sauk Valley.

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Democrat James F. Heuerman, 56, of Sterling, to replace Steines.

Heuerman was seated Jan. 2.

The 14th Circuit serves Whiteside, Henry, Mercer and Rock Island counties.

2004: de Immigrant Windmill is site for romantic proposal 60 Years

Feb. 19, 1964

At a special congregational meeting, members of the First Reformed Church voted to proceed with the construction of an educational unit addition to the church structure on 15th Avenue. A large majority of the congregation voted to go ahead with the project. The addition will be a three-story structure, 42 feet by 90 feet, facing north on 15th Avenue to the east of the main structure of the church.

Fulton Locker Service advertised beef quarters at a fore quarter for 40 cents a pound, a hind quarter for 58 cents a pound, sides for 49 cents a pound and split sides for 50 cents a pound.

50 Years

Feb. 20, 1974

Drives Inc., owned by Alfred Den Besten and Richard Kummerer, has agreed to purchase the Fidelity Life building located on a square block of land between 10th and 11th avenues and First and Second streets. President Den Besten and his associate have not decided yet what purposes the building will be used for but hope to find uses that will be helpful to the Fulton community.

Herman DeVries wished a sincere thanks to the many friends for whom he has done work for in the Fulton area during the past 25 years. He is terminating his building business and working with Argi-King Inc.

Feb. 22, 1984

Mark Fanderclai received an Accent on Excellence award at the opening of the school board meeting.

Board member James Fish said Fanderclai is an outstanding musician who earned a place in the All-State Band trumpet section. Fanderclai also was a manager of the football team, a member of the Thespians and an outstanding scholar who always made the honor roll and ranks fifth in a senior class of 96 students.

Members of the Fulton City Council Planning and Records committee met to study a proposed new city manual that will set forth in detail the duties and responsibilities of all city employees. Alderman Jerry Van Zuiden, who is chairman of the committee, said the preliminary draft of the manual was prepared by City Administrator Tom Kamm and Dee Gosling and Company, Clinton accountants. Other members of the committee are aldermen Ray Meurs and Warren Juist.

Feb. 16, 1994

The Fulton Steamers girls varsity basketball team is playing in the IHSA regional in Savanna. Having won their first two games, they will play in the championship game against Lanark Eastland. Members of the team include Heidi Shepard, Jennifer Countryman, Kathy Kreuder, Heather Smither, Lisa Kuehl, Jamie Pickens, Jamie Holesinger, Amanda Norman, Angie Snyder and Coach Michelle Hoist.

Motorists traveling east on 10th Avenue found a small lake blocking their travel at the end of the street. It was the result of a major thaw that began Monday. Because of the buildup of ice and snow on the sides of the street, the water reached a height of about six inches.

20 Years

Feb. 18, 2004

The volunteer millers at de Immigrant Windmill received an unusual request. They were asked to open the windmill on the evening of Friday the 13th for a special event, a Valentine’s Day weekend engagement. Michael Dilts worked together with the millers to turn the windmill into a romantic hideaway. Candles were supplied by the future groom and the millers.

Music for a special dance was planned

by Dilts, who asked Jennifer Hunter to marry him inside the mill on the cold, clear evening. The surprised brideto-be accepted the proposal.

The Fulton Steamers wrestling program will be represented at the IHSA state wrestling tournament by Matt Tyler (215 pounds). Tyler, a senior, will take a 34-3 record and the state’s No. 3 ranking to Champaign.

10 Years

Feb. 19, 2014

Each year in January, Kiwanis members have an opportunity to nominate one of their own for The Kiwanian of the Year. Last year’s winners were Vickie Lockhart and Jon Lockhart. It is Kiwanis custom for them to present this year’s winners – Steve Huizenga and Larry Russell. This is the first time the club had a virtual tie for the award.

Three others – Len Janis, Barb Suehl-Janis and Larry Huizenga – were nominated along with the two winners.

Unity Christian Little Hoops recently had its final game of the 2014 season. Little Hoops is a six-week developmental program for students in grades second through sixth. Scott Stephan led Little Hoops this year at Unity. There were almost 30 participants.

After the condition is diagnosed, common therapies to help the pain include Tylenol, Ibuprofen and Aleve.

Taking birth control pills also may help.

Additional medicines such as certain types of hormones may be used.

Some of these may cause hot flashes and vaginal dryness, much like menopause. Sometimes estrogen pills are used. A medicine called Danazol may cause acne and facial hair. On occasion, some women may require surgery to treat endometriosis.

Surgery sometimes is employed for those with endometriosis who have a

difficult time getting pregnant. However, fertility agents often are still necessary. By no means will everyone with endometriosis have trouble getting pregnant. In fact, it is important to avoid pregnancy while taking some of the treatment for this condition.

For many women, endometriosis will go away with menopause when the periods stop. Before that time, medicine or surgery may be implemented.

The program is designed by co-founder Jennifer Adamson, who is a certified SVSP has created a beginner four-week strength and conditioning coach.

Athletes just need to bring a positive Speed and Agility program starting at attitude and inside athletic shoes and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26.

The camp will be hosted at RTQ Fitness, attire.

Dates for the camp are Monday, Feb. 26, 222 Main St. in Morrison.

For a fee of $15 per session (cash only) March 6, March 11 and March 25. All sessions begin at 5:30 p.m. any athlete between 6 and 9 years old can attend the 45-minute workout.

Sportsmen’s Banquet is Feb. 24 in Thomson

The Sportsmen’s Banquet will be Saturday, Feb. 24, at Majestic Pines in Thomson.

Outdoorsmen and their families are encouraged to attend. The mid-winter sportsmen’s banquet is hosted by the Mississippi Flyway Waterfowlers.

The event includes a meal, live auction, silent auction and many raffles. Organizers plan on a ladies’ raffle and dice raffle.

A deer hunter’s raffle will include a deer ground blind, hunting gear and food plot seed. The waterfowler’s raffle will include all gear needed for waterfowl hunting.

Morrison pulls away from Hall, wins regional semifinal Fillies fall to Riverdale in regional championship

kchlum@shawmedia.com SPRING VALLEY – Playing the regional host in a semifinal Feb. 12, the No. 3-seeded Morrison girls basketball team found itself locked in a tight battle in the first half.

The Fillies made an offensive switch, closed the first half on a 14-2 run and pulled away for a 57-39 victory over No. 7 Hall in the Class 2A Hall Regional semifinal.

“I thought we came out and played the game we needed to play,” Morrison coach Kerry Grim said. “It’s tough when you play the home team on their court and we kind of got treated like the visitors more than the home team even though we’re the higher seed, but the girls came out and did what we asked them to do. We executed our game plan and came out with the ‘W.’ “ “We’ve played them multiple times and they’re a really tough team, but I think if we play with the energy we had tonight and just the strength and confidence, I think we can have a good game,” Morrison junior Camryn Veltrop said.

“It’s going to be a dogfight. We know that,” Grim said.

It was a dogfight early. After Morrison took an 8-3 lead with Veltrop scoring all eight points, the Red Devils battled back to tie it at 12 at the end of the first quarter when Charlie Pellegrini knocked down a 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Hall took the lead at 15-14 on a 3-pointer by Kennedy Wozniak.

The Fillies made a change on offense and finished the half on a 14-2 run, turning a 21-19 lead with 4:11 left into a 35-21 lead by halftime.

“At the end of the first half, I switched the offense from running a baseline offense against their zone – they were trying to pack it in on us – and went with three posts and started attacking a high post so we could get the ball inside,” Grim said.

Emery Brewer hit a shot and Jordan Eads followed with a 3-pointer to start the run before the Fillies went inside.

Veltrop hit two free throws and then converted a three-point play on an assist from Kaylee Pruis before Avery White scored on a putback and off an assist from Pruis to close the half.

“Just moving the ball around helped us a lot, and just not forcing it,” Veltrop said. “We have trouble forcing it sometimes. Just slowing down, passing the ball around and waiting for a good shot really helped us.”

Hall coach T.J. Orlandi said Morrison hitting some outside shots affected the Hall defense, and the Red Devils didn’t shoot well enough to keep up with the Fillies.

Fulton battles back, surpasses Polo in overtime

Steamers’ Baylen Damhoff, Dom Kramer record doubledoubles in comeback win

Fulton was the perfect embodiment of that saying Feb. 12 in a hard-fought 50-44 overtime win against NUIC South rival Polo.

After committing five turnovers and scoring only six points in the first quarter, the Steamers (19-11, 7-1) quickly got their heads in the right place.

“I’d say that we started off not in the right mind or right place mentally,” Fulton senior forward Baylen Damhoff said. “We beat them bad last time [77-43 on Feb. 7], so we just came in and thought it was going to be another game [like that]. But after the first quarter, we got a reality check and we had to pick it up in the second quarter.”

Polo (14-12, 6-4) dictated the game early, following a putback by Damhoff with an 8-0 run over a 2:59 stretch.

Junior forward Noah Dewey sparked the surge with a putback less than a minute after Damhoff’s basket and junior guard Gus Mumford followed with back-to-back 3-pointers from the right corner and right wing for an 8-2 lead with 2:49 remaining.

After two free throws from Damhoff and a putback by senior guard Trevor Tiesman made it a two-point game, Mumford drilled another 3 to make it 11-6 Polo at the end of the first quarter.

“Just our energy from the start,” Polo senior forward Brock Soltow said about why Polo played Fulton so much closer in the rematch. “We knew this was going to be a battle between each other because the last time we played each other, it was 29-24, and then right when we came out of halftime of the first game, they just blew us out, so we knew we had to get our energy back up and our bench helped a lot.”

The lead didn’t hold for long, however.

Damhoff opened the second quarter with a left-wing 3 and then followed another 3 by junior guard Braeden Brennan with a layup to tie the game at 16 with 3:18 left in the second quarter.

Fulton senior Brady Read hit a leftwing 3 for a 19-16 lead with just more than two minutes left, and Soltow answered with one of his own to tie the game at 19 heading into halftime.

Polo took a 21-19 lead on a Dewey layup with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter and then stretched it to 27-22 a little over five minutes later after Soltow slithered between a pair of defenders and finished a layup.

In the last 44 seconds, Fulton senior Jimmy Crimmins made a putback to draw to within one point and Brennan hit two free throws to capture a 30-29 lead at the end of the third quarter.

“I think it has to do a lot with communication and how we talked and worked out together on the court,” Fulton junior forward Dom Kramer said about how the Steamers adjusted after the first quarter. “It’s definitely teamwork. We worked together there at the end, everyone contributed to the game, and it was a really good game.”

Kramer came alive in the last 11 minutes, scoring all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime and grabbing several rebounds during that stretch to help the Steamers fend off the Marcos.

Kramer made a putback and two layups around Dewey and Damhoff layups for a 38-34 lead with 4:29 to play in the fourth.

“Just get to the rack and cause as many fouls as I can because I knew anything could count in a close game,” Kramer said.

Crimmins hit a mid-range jumper

to push the lead to 40-34, but Soltow scored six straight points over the last 2:27 to force overtime.

Kramer gave Fulton a 44-41 lead with a free throw followed by a threepoint play at the 2:11 mark and then answered a Soltow layup with two free throws to restore the three-point lead at 46-43. Brennan hit the first of two free throws to make it a four-point game and Read hit two more and Tiesman hit the second of two free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

rebounds or assists.

“I’d say it was a good team effort.

We always want to play as a team, get as many people involved, just work as a team and win,” Damhoff said. “We showed that we never give up and always work hard until the finish.”

Damhoff totaled 15 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Kramer supplied 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Read scored seven points, Brennan scored six points and Tiesman added five points, three rebounds and three assists for the Steamers.

called to active duty in 1972 as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He served 13 tours of duty before retiring with the rank of captain in 1997 after 25 years of service.

Upon retiring from the Chaplain corps, he began a dual pastoral and music ministry, serving as organist/ pianist and frequent preacher at First Congregational Church of Ramona, California. He served there for 22 years. Simultaneously, he provided care for three young grandchildren and became their legal guardian upon the death of their mother in 2006, when the children were in elementary school.

In 2018, he moved to a Christian Independent Living Center in Surprise, Arizona, where he began providing frequent piano recitals for the residents. For the past five years he has served on the staff of the United Church of Christ of Sun City, Arizona, as preacher and pianist.

Ellison’s spiritual gifts are music, preaching and friendship.

As he reaches this 60-year milestone, he requests prayers and hugs from friends and family.

The Rev. Floyd Ellison, a former Erie resident, will be recognized and honored by the congregation of the United Church of Christ of Sun City, Arizona, after church services Sunday, March 17, on the 60th anniversary of his ordination to Christian ministry.

Born in Moline and raised in Erie, Ellison completed elementary and high school in Erie and received graduate and post-graduation degrees from Augustana College in Rock Rev. Floyd Ellison Island and American Baptist Seminary, Berkeley School of Theology and the Graduate Theological Union, all in Berkeley, California.

Upon completion of his seminary studies, Ellison was ordained on March 8, 1964, at Erie Baptist Church.

Among those participating in the ceremony were his uncle, Rev. L.E. Ellison, his father, Rev. J.B. Ellison (both deceased) and his sister, Mary Francis, of Morrison.
