goes mask optional after emergency school board meeting

An influx of calls and emails to the Riverdale School District’s superintendent and Board of Education prompted an emergency meeting Friday, Feb. 11, at the middle school’s Betty Plumb Auditorium. At issue was whether to continue with mandated masking after the Feb. 4 ruling that granted a temporary restraining order on statewide mask mandates and other COVID-19 measures in schools.

The ruling by Sangamon County Circuit Court Judge Raylene Grischow directly impacted 145 school districts named in the suit, including neighboring Erie and River Bend School Districts, though Morrison and Prophetstown also went mask optional after the judge’s decision. Illinois’ indoor mask mandates are set to end on Feb. 28, except in schools. The Pritzker administration has appealed the court’s decision.

With over 50 concerned parents and taxpayers in the auditorium, Superintendent.

Josh Temple urged respect, compassion, and grace before he opened the floor to public comments, giving each speaker five minutes.

More than a dozen parents and two students shared their thoughts, ranging from the health impacts of masking such as headaches, light-headedness, increased absences, depression, and irritability, as well as federal and state funding tied to continued mandates, personal choice and responsibility, mask-wearing discrepancies at school events, and the evolving science and available remedies after two years of COVID-19. Some called out Gov. JB Pritzker for overstepping his authority.

The crowd applauds as the mask optional vote passed at an emergency meeting Feb. 11. nor’s authority” and that the ruling called out his “abuse of power.” She said the judge’s decision means the rules are void and districts can govern themselves accordingly, even suing school boards if they continue. “It’s illegal and needs to stop,” she told the board.

After nearly 45 minutes of the public session, the board discussed their concerns about going mask optional. The advice to continue masking was encouraged by the school’s legal team at Franczek based on liability protections and insurance. Temple noted that the TORT fund could go up at the expense of taxpayers to pay for any damages awards if the school was found negligent. Schools choosing to go mask optional earlier in the year had been threatened with loss of state funding which would also have to be made up by the taxpayers. The IHSA has changed its stance on schools in probation being able to participate earlier in the year. He noted that school officials have been updating the Return to Learn plan in recent weeks in anticipation of changes, but it’s still based on CDC recom-

mendations.

“It’s a very unique situation,” Temple said. “Every parent wants what’s best for their child, and there will always be people with opposing views on mandates.” He also cautioned that it would be a mistake to move forward without any mitigation measures in place taking on additional risks.

There is also a possibility that they could be forced back into mandates, especially if cases go up.

A motion was made to shift to masks being optional in all indoor school spaces in line with the Return to Learn that was approved last July, effective immediately.

Voting yes were Tim Baldwin, Scott Beeler, Todd Jackson, Kevin Mahraun, and Amber Sensabaugh, with Jim Toppert and Wendy Kelley voting no. The gallery erupted in cheers after the vote passed.

Third grader Bristol Chaney attended the meeting with her parents and older sister, and said she was happy with the school board’s decision. “We shouldn’t have to wear our masks when we’re told to because it’s illegal,” she said, smiling.

Port Byron board approves demolition study

Discussions about village plans for the current Blackhawk Bank & Trust building at 124 N. Main St. continued at the Port Byron board meeting Monday, Feb. 7.

The bank is in the process of downsizing and will be constructing a smaller facility on the property, with a new entrance from North High Street. They’ve offered the village the opportunity to purchase the older building, which has issues from water leaking.

Trustee Wayne Oney said the village’s acquisition of the bank is a big subject with many details to figure out, and he’s been working with the bank to gather

more information. Mayor Barb Cray said she supports tearing down the building for more downtown parking. The board approved spending $4,000 to have engineering firm MSA Professional Services determine the cost of demolition.

Jared Fluhr with MSA next discussed a lead pipe survey that is now mandated for all municipalities in Illinois. The survey needs to be done this year but doesn’t have to be turned in to the state EPA until April 2023. He reviewed the steps the village will need to take to complete and submit the survey. The village will need to pay for the survey upfront but could apply for an EPA refund. The board will continue discussions at the next meeting.

The board approved spending $2,975 to

replace the garage heater at the downtown fire station while discussing the future purchase of an automatic door closer.

They also approved a 30-day notice of termination for the company that leases the satellite equipment on the water tower after Speed Connect of California was bought out and the new company hasn’t paid the village since May 2021.

In other reports, Tammy Knapp with the Tug Fest committee said their first meeting was held last week, with brainstorming ideas for family activities. The committee is seeking volunteers to help plan for the annual festival. Trustee Stacey Getting also informed the board that she’ll be moving out of the area and will be resigning, likely by the end of March.

Kilimanjaro’ is next event at WWW@WCC The Windmill Volunteer Educators at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton invite the public to attend the next Wild Winter Wednesday program at 9 a.m. Feb. 23. The program features coffee, tea, mill treats and a presentation from Jean Roeder of Fulton, about mountain climbing.

Roeder has worked in the health care field for 45-plus years. She is an avid runner and has tirelessly organized local races including the Easter Seals Run, Pam Pray Memorial Run, the Dutch Days Race, Calvary Hill Hustle and the Fulton Christmas Walk Run. Roeder has been honored as Volunteer of the Year by Easter Seals and with the YWCA Women of Achievement Award, Iowa Governor’s Award for Volunteering and grand marshal of the Mardi Gras Parade. She has volunteered at Starfish Haiti and is active with Fulton Kiwanis.

Roeder has summited all 14,000foot peaks in Colorado and will share her latest accomplishment “Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.”

A Morrison man is in Whiteside County jail on $250,000 bond, charged with sharing and possessing child pornography.

Gualberto M. Gaeta, 30, was arrested Thursday, Feb. 10, after an ISP Division of Criminal Investigation search of his home in the 100 block of East Main Street, State Police said in a news release.

Gaeta is charged with three counts of dissemination of child pornography, punishable by six to 30 years in prison, and three counts of possession of child pornography, which carries three to seven years.

Both charges come with mandatory fines of up $100,000, and, if convicted of

more than one count, mandatory consecutive terms.

The six counts involve sharing, reproducing or simply having images, on a computer or otherwise, of a boy or Gualberto M. Gaeta boys younger than 13 engaged in sex acts with a man or men, on Monday, court records show.

Gaegta has a preliminary hearing Feb. 28.

The investigation continues, the release said.

A Sterling High School cellist has been chosen as the Clinton Symphony Orchestra’s 2022 Young Artist and will appear as soloist with the orchestra at their family concert at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Morrison High School auditorium.

Keegan Roddy will play the third movement of the cello concerto by French composer Camille Saint-Saens accompanied by the orchestra. Keegan is the middle of five children of Stuart and Joselynne Roddy of Coleta.

She is first chair cellist in her high school orchestra and has participated in Illinois All-District and All-State orchestras. Her cello teachers have included Clinton Symphony musicians Barbara Lauff, Erik Oberg and Robert Whipple.

The Young Artist auditions took place in January. Additional awards were given to cellist Anna Current, a junior at Clinton High School, and violinist Clara Ashdown, a sophomore at Erie High School. The annual auditions are open to all high school musicians in the area.

30, 1953 in Moline, IL, the son of William and Ramona (Hott) Shaffer. He was drafted into the Army in 1971. Ric married Lynn Cooper on June 1, 1983. He worked for John Deere in the Powerhouse Department, from where he retired.

Ric was an avid fisherman, and enjoyed camping and traveling. He loved his grandchildren and spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn, of Erie; daughter, Sherry (Bill) Brackemyer, Morrison; son, Joe (Cherish) Shaffer, Prophetstown; 5 grandchildren, Christopher, Bridget, Dusty, Audrey, Isaac; and 9 great grandchildren, Aaliyah, Cheston, Channing, Brantly, Cassidy, Cailyn, Teagin, Izzabelle, Braezlee; and sisters, Deb Fischer, East Moline and Sue Mullins, Cocoa, FL. “A Symphonic Menagerie” by conductor Brian Dollinger and will include the overture to the opera “The Thieving Magpie,” a waltz from the ballet “Swan Lake,” Keegan Roddy Leroy Anderson’s novelty piece “The Waltzing Cat,” and the entire “Carnival of the Animals” by Saint-Saens, featuring duo pianists Nadia Wirchnianski and Christine Holmer with the orchestra.

Admission to the concert is free to all students. Adult tickets are available at the door for $20, but any adult who was “brought” by a student is eligible for a $10 ticket. The concert is included in the orchestra’s season ticket. This is the fifth concert of the symphony’s 68th season.

Feb. 8 Patricia A. Diaz was arrested on a Scott County, Iowa, warrant and issued a no trespassing notice in the 19000 block of Elston Road. She was transported to the Whiteside County Jail.

OBITUARIES DONALD WAYNE BRANDS Born: August 11, 1936 in Morrison, IL Died: February 11, 2022 in Sterling, IL

STERLING – Donald “Donny” Wayne Brands, 85, of Sterling, passed away peacefully at Community General Hospital in Sterling on Friday, February 11, 2022, surrounded by family. Don was born August 11, 1936 in Morrison, the son of Riep and Dora (Prins) Brands. He married Karen Ann Bielema on June 8, 1956 in Fulton. She passed away on February 18, 2006. He then married Nancy Snodgrass on October 7, 2006. Don worked with his dad and brother at Riep Brands & Sons. Don and his brother Bob later purchased the business and changed the name to Brands Heating & Appliances. Don never truly retired, but continued to help his sons Jerry and Jon Brands after they took over the business. He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church where he served as Deacon.

Born: April 6, 1938 in Fulton, IL Died: February 11, 2022 in Prophetstown, IL LARRY DALE WILKINS, 83, of Allure in Prophetstown, IL, formerly of Fulton, IL, died Friday, February 11, 2022 at Allure.

His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 17th at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fulton Twp. Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Friends of the Hennepin Canal outing set for Feb. 20

The Friends of the Hennepin Canal will hold their monthly Hike the Canal outing on Sunday, Feb. 20.

Alverno in Clinton, IA. He was a member of the Spring Valley Reformed Church all his life, and had served on several committees.

Arlyn’s passion was woodworking, carpentry and being a handy-man. He also enjoyed watching baseball, football, and watching westerns. He made a cradle for each of his children’s first-born, as well as wooden treasures each Christmas. Arlyn was a wealth of knowledge for Whiteside County residents and their family ties. He put a lot of love and work into renovating the barn on Carolyn’s family farm, making it the perfect place to make memories for all the “kids”. Above all, Arlyn enjoyed his family.

1992: Cub Scout Pack 342 names Pinewood Derby winners 60 Years

Feb. 14, 1962

Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell and their daughter, Luann, were among the guests at the Morrison Chapter of the D.A.R. dinner when Good Citizenship awards were presented. Award winners were Luann Mitchell of Fulton, Mary Bordner of Morrison and Linda Norman of Erie. Each winner gave a brief outline of her activities and each was presented with a pin.

Patent Novelty stockholders held their 56th annual meeting. Reports showed an increase in total volume of business and an increase in earnings during the past year. Board of directors reelected were Eugene Dana, A. Loomis Hanson, Miss C.J. Dugan, A.B. Oakleaf, Henry Norman, Dr. B.J. Snyder and J.E. Mitchell.

Feb. 16, 1972

Three high school students were granted scholarship loans by the Insurance Men’s Scholarship Loan Board for 1972. Students receiving loans were Nancy Sikkema, Dave Hill and David DeWeerdt.

for 1972. She reigned over the basketball game when the Steamers played Riverdale on their home court. She was escorted by Mark Borgman.

40 Years

Feb. 17, 1982

Construction of the main pumping station for the Fulton flood protection dike has begun. When completed, the station will pump Fulton’s storm sewer water over the top of the dike in case of severe flooding. The site is located just south of the sewer treatment plant, just west of 24th Avenue.

The Fulton School Board continued making more budget cuts and voted 6-1 to eliminate the golf coaching position, bringing the total cuts made thus far to about $180,000. Athletic Director Stan Borgman presented the athletic department’s feelings in the matter. Borgman said the coaching staff would rather see an entire sport eliminated than to see one coach cut. He said the staff felt that by making further staff cuts, it would lead toward a “watered down” program and “no one wants to see that happen.”

Conjunctivitis symptoms are discussed

Conjunctivitis, or what is more commonly known as pink eye, is a common condition particularly in the flu and cold season or allergy season. While it is highly contagious, especially in day care settings, it generally does not lead to further damage beyond the short-term localized infection.

The condition is an inflammation of the outside layer of the eye, the conjunctive, and its infected portion is more readily visible in the white portion of the eye, the sclera. It is often caused by a virus, but there may be bacterial elements, as well. Other factors that may contribute to conjunctivitis are smoke, wind, dust and allergies. All irritants, including viral infections, may set one up for more concerning bacterial infection.

The most common symptom is redness or mattering of the eye. Mattering may be most prominent in the morning, but in advanced stages may flow throughout the day. While the process is irritating, it is generally not painful and there may be some mild sensitivity to light. If these conditions exist, one should not hesitate to go to their doctor.

Treatment, like many medical conditions, is best done in the preventive stage.

Careful hand washing and some degree of isolation will help lessen the spread dramatically. Avoiding rubbing the eyes also can lessen the organisms that show up on the hand and are transmitted to other objects or people. Given the degree of difficulty in following the basic measures with young children, one can readily envision how the condition is rapidly transmitted in day care settings.

Once the condition is established, warm compresses to the eye for five to 10 minutes four times a day may help lessen the intensity and relieve some of the milder or viral infections. When the condition is more notable, antibiotics are prescribed to bring the infection under control. These should be taken exactly as directed. Also contact lenses should be avoided during treatment. Once treatment has begun, the process generally tends to improve rapidly. If noticeable improvement is not seen within two to three days, your physician should be contacted.

A child generally can attend school unless there is prominent flow, known as exudate, coming from the eye making it more bacterial. When the eyes are mainly just pink with only mild flow, it is generally a viral or less threatening condition.

River Bend Middle School earned an Academic Excellence Award for 2011 from the Illinois State Board of Education. In order to receive the award, at least 90% of the students must meet or exceed state standards on their ISAT tests in both reading and mathematics for at least three consecutive years. Overall, 91.3% of the middle school students met or exceed ed rea ding stan da rds and 94.4% met or exceeded math standards.

Fulton High School announced that senior point guard Erik Renkes passed the career 1,000-point mark.

Renkes becomes the eighth Fulton Steamer in school history to accomplish the feat. The other Fulton greats were Ryan Voss, Rick Norman, Arnie Housenga, Larry Prins, Eric Ottens, Mike Woods and Rick Lanning.

MercyOne Clinton Foundation health-related scholarships available At MercyOne, building and retaining a strong, professional health care workforce in the Clinton area is a top priority. To help achieve this goal, MercyOne Clinton Foundation annually offers scholarships for area students who are pursuing a health-related field.

The foundation offers scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000. Applications are available for the 2022-23 academic year.

“The need for highly skilled individuals to serve in patient care, lab, radiology, respiratory care or any number of health care fields continues to grow, and we are pleased to offer scholarships to help students in the eastern Iowa or western Whiteside area achieve academic training,” the foundation said in a news release.

those pursuing a degree in a health-related field.

• The Dr. Frank O. Kershner Scholarship, which is available to those pursuing a nursing degree.

• The Patrick and Anna McKay Scholarship, which is available to colleagues of MercyOne Clinton Medical Center and their relatives pursuing a health-related degree.

• The Lori Skiff Memorial Nursing Scholarship, which is available to MercyOne RNs pursuing a higher education in the field of nursing.

• The N.K.L. Scholarship, which is avai lable to those admitted to a nursing program.

Scholarship funds are used for education in pursuit of a nursing degree.

Riverdale High School’s robotics team, the Robotic Rams-FTC Team 6596, raised $2,500 in January to purchase LEGO sets for children at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City.

The team recently went shopping at Walmart in Silvis and loaded up three carts with 98 individual sets.

Coach Jason Dennhardt personally delivered them to the hospital a couple od days later, noting that COVID19 restrictions limited the number of visitors.

Dennhardt said the team was inspired to start the annual project in 2017 when Blaine Lofgren, son of elementary school principal Mark Lofgren, was in the hospital for several months fighting Burkitt lymphoma.

When asked how the team could help, Mark Lofgren suggested doing something for others at the hospital, since he saw firsthand so many people with much less support than his family had. “Quickly after that conversation, this idea was born,” Dennhardt said.

Over the past five years, the Robotic Rams have raised more than $11,000 and donated more than 450 LEGO sets to the hospital, which gave them recognition on social media last week

Riverdale High School wrestlers join 100-win club

COLLEGE NEWS Augustana College in Rock Island announced more than 1,000 students were named to the Dean’s List for the 2021-22 fall semester. Students who have earned this academic honor have maintained a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4-point scale for courses taken during the term.

Area students named to the Dean’s List are Madison Fouts of Prophetstown and Ella Aldridge, Mariam Elahmady, Emily Schipper and Kylie Collachia, all of Fulton.

UW-Platteville students named to Chancellor’s List

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville announced its Chancellor’s List, honoring those with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages for the fall 2021 semester.

Students from the area who earned 4.0 grade-point averages are Lauren Graham, STEM Education MC-EA, and Chase Lockaby, Mechanical Engineering, both of Port Byron.

Congratulations to wrestlers Brock Smith and Collin Altensey, Riverdale High School juniors, for joining the 100 Win Club. The wrestlers achieved the milestone at meets during the last week of January. Brock also broke the season takedown record of 124, previously held by Jonathan Gosa. Brock now has 143 takedowns. Brock also passed Joel Stockwell’s long-standing season match points record of 404 and now is at 434. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville announced its Dean’s List, honoring full-time students who earned high honors in the fall 2021 semester.

The College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture and the College of Liberal Arts and Education require grade-point averages of 3.75 and above for Dean’s List honors. The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science requires students to reach at least a 3.50.

Morrison Lions Club fulfills ‘we serve’ motto for 2021

With great support from the community, the Morrison Lions Club was still able to keep their “We Serve” motto despite the ongoing pandemic.

At the local level, the club, with the assistance of Morrison American Legion Post 328, announced a campaign last fall to replace the 350 flags used for the Avenue of Flags that line Route 30 and Route 78 on holidays and special occasions. Avenue of the Flags was started 32 years ago by the late Mayor George Piersol. Thanks to the tremendous community support for this project, enough donations have been received to replace all the flags!

Morrison Lions Club held a successful Recycle Day last April and is also planning another event tentatively set for Saturday, April 23. Watch for more information in coming weeks.

They also are working with the city of Morrison to purchase some play-

ground equipment for the Morrison Sports Complex.

The Lions provided aid to Morrison residents who needed assistance with vision services. The club also reimbursed CGH Health Foundation for eyeglasses they provided to Morrison area children and adults. Donations were made to White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center, Morrison Youth Baseball and Softball, and Morrison T-Ball. Two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Morrison High School seniors. A donation was made to Odell Public Library for the purchase of large print books and in support of their new flooring project. The Lions also made a donation to Helping Hands and at Christmas, members donated caps, gloves/mittens and scarves which were taken to schools for distribution to children by teachers and nurses who saw a need.

At the state level, donations were made to the Lions of Illinois Foundation, which included support for free low vision screenings for very visually impaired children and provided help for visual needs at no cost. Donations also were made to the foundation for diabetes awareness and to Camp Lions, which is a camp for youth and adults with vision and hearing problems. Support was also given to Eversight - Illinois whose mission is to restore sight and prevent blindness.

They receive donations of eye tissue, such as corneas, and are involved with transplantation and research.

The club also supports the Center for Sight and Hearing located in Rockford, which provides support for both vision and hearing needs. The center’s technicians provide training, such as use of a white cane, training for the visual impaired to enable them to nav-

igate in their surroundings, and sign language classes. This past year the Morrison club provided four nights lodging and transportation for a Morrison resident to enable ongoing training for consecutive days.

The club donated to Lions International Foundation including support for their disaster relief efforts around the world. They also supported Leader Dogs for the Blind, which provided a leader dog and training with the dog for three weeks at no cost, which also included transportation to and back home as well as meals and lodging.

Makenzie Glassburn participates in UI’s Dance Marathon Makenzie Glassburn of Prophetstown was one of more than 900 University of Iowa students who participated in the 28th annual student-led Dance Marathon that generated more than $1.3 million for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

The final tally raised by the students was $1,361,184, a total that pushed the amount of support generated by Dance

Marathon over the course of its 28-year history to more than $33 million.

Dance Marathon’s “Big Event” took place the weekend of Feb. 4-5. It is the celebration of University of Iowa students’ year-round dedication to the chil d ren and fam ili e s who hav e received treatment at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Interested in becoming a veterinary technician? Veterinary technology is a two-year Associate in Applied Science program that prepares students to perform veterinary procedures under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Black Hawk College is accepting applications for its associate degree nursing and practical nursing programs through Monday, Feb. 28, for the start of the August 2022 program.

Black Hawk College offers career-focused programs for nursing. BHC graduates are employed by hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, physicians’ offices, clinics and community agencies.

Riverdale, Morrison, Fulton, EP wrestlers advance to state

treynolds@shawmedia.com PRINCETON – When it comes down to the final few steps of the postseason, it’s survive and advance. For nine area wrestlers, they did just that at Saturday’s Class 1A Princeton Sectional, and achieved their season-long goal of qualifying for the IHSA state tournament.

Led by sectional champions Collin Altensey of Riverdale and Kayden White of Morrison, those nine locals will be wrestling at State Farm Center in Champaign this week.

Riverdale’s Brock Smith and Alex Watson both placed second, while Fulton’s Zane Pannell and Erie-Prophetstown’s Wyatt Goossens both took third. His Panther teammates Jase Grunder and Elijah Friedrichsen finished fourth, as did Morrison’s Nate Schaefer.

White took care of business in the title bout at 182, notching an early takedown against Sandwich’s Alex Alfaro, then adding a few more en route to an 11-2 major decision.

“I knew he liked to throw, so I was just planning on tying up his hands and getting in my low shots, and that’s what I did,” Altensey said. “Then I kind of stalled out in the third, but now I know what he does and I’ll just learn from it for state. I’m sure I’ll see him at state.”

It’s Altensey’s second sectional title, and the junior was still trying to wrap his thoughts around it as he received his medal.

“It’ll probably sink in soon, but it’s pretty cool,” he said. “I won it freshman year, so I knew it was really important then. It feels good to be on top now.”

Rams teammate Brock Smith battled through the 132-pound title bout against Dakota’s TJ Silva, as the two went back and forth until the very end.

Silva pulled out a 9-8 victory, but the trip to state was a good end to a tough week for Smith.

“I was very sick this week and didn’t go to school a couple of days.

I missed out on a few practices, so really, just my coaches and my teammates picking me up and telling me I had it in me helped a lot,” Smith said.

“Those first few matches are what mattered the most. There are 16 spots on that state bracket, and it doesn’t really matter which one you end up on, as long as you end up on top. That’s my plan.”

He also feels like he knows what he has to do differently if he wants to make some noise at state.

“I’ve got to get a bully mentality out there to do what I want when I want,” Smith said. “That’s how I’ve won most of my matches this year, and I lacked that this weekend, and it kind of cost me that finals match. So I’ve got to get that bully mentality back in me, get back on my edge.

Watson was also in an exciting bout at 160 pounds, where he took on LenaWinslow/Stockton’s Marey Roby for the title. The two traded takedowns, and a late escape brought Watson within one point, but that’s where it ended as the Rams junior fell 5-4.

“I beat him earlier in the year, and I was close this time. I probably could have worked my offense a lot more,” Watson said. “Definitely my blast double [leg] and ankle pick were huge for me this weekend. I worked those two takedowns quite a bit.

“But next week is what matters. It shows me what I need to work on, so

I’m going to get back in the room and keep working.”

Erie-Prophetstown’s Wyatt Goossens pinned Newman’s Briar Ivey in 5:04 in the third-place bout at 113 pounds. Goossens trailed 4-0 and 7-2 in the first period before turning things around.

“I wasn’t wrestling smart,” said the Panthers freshman, who won by pin in 44 seconds in the blood round. “I let him get on my legs too much, and I went for some sloppy throw, and it

didn’t really work out. I got put to my back, but I fought off, and then from there, I just knew that I had to beat him. I knew I could, I could just feel it.

I knew I had to come back and win.”

The area’s other third-place finisher was Fulton’s Zane Pannell, who controlled Sherrard’s Ryder Roelf to the tune of a 10-4 decision in their third-place match at 170. Pannell punched his ticket to Champaign with a pin of Newman’s Hunter Luyando in 2:44 in their blood round bout.

“I just wrestled my way, my style,” Pannell said. “My brothers Eli and Max were here and gave me some helpful tips, so that helped.”

Erie-Prophetstown’s Jase Grunder and Elijah Friedrichsen both finished fourth, but were more excited about their wins in the blood round that punched their tickets to state.

Grunder lost 5-0 to Dakota’s Tyler SImmer in the 145-pound third-place bout. But it was his aggressive style that earned him an 8-2 win over Marian’s Nik Jimenez in the blood round.

“Just really the double leg [takedowns] is what did it,” Grunder said.

“I did that every time I took him down.

I think after I took him down the second time, it kind of hurt him a little bit.

I don’t think he expected me to come out firing like I did.”

Friedrichsen fell 6-1 to Polo’s Daniel Engel in the third-place match at 285, a bout that was scoreless until the final 38 seconds. Engel caught Friedrichsen off-balance and scored a takedown, then the Panthers senior popped right back up to make it 2-1. But Engel recorded a takedown and back points in the final three seconds to pull away.

And while Friedrichsen was bummed out about finishing with a loss, he looked back with pride at the run he had to make through wrestlebacks, including a come-from-behind

He celebrated by grappling with head coach Tod McCullough, before eventually taking McCullough to the mat as the two embraced in a bear hug.

“I was very excited. I didn’t want to hurt him, but I was very excited,” Friedrichsen said with a smile. “Honestly, it’s just another thing that I needed to keep working hard for. Getting put on my back twice sucks, but I just need to fix what I can. I’m proud of myself because I overcame the adversity of losing my second match.

To all the kids on our team that said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to wrestle three more to make it now,’ I just said, ‘That’s just three more wins for us.’ It’s just more hard work that we need to push ourselves for.”

Morrison’s Nate Schaefer fell in the third-place match at 220 pounds, as he was pinned in 1:47 by Dixon’s Justin Dallas.

But it was after the blood round when Schaefer shared an emotional moment with his father, Adam, a former Morrison state qualifier. Schaefer defeated Wheaton Academy’s Peter Johanik 3-0 to earn a state berth, and after hugging his mom, Schaefer walked over to his dad, who was sitting on the floor at the edge of the mat in tears, and embraced him
