According to Scott Hutmacher, regional marketing manager for Life Time Fitness, which sponsors the Kids Tri Chicago, 1,050 kids participated in last weekend’s event. He believes kids are drawn to triathlons because they combine three sports most kids have done recreationally. While adults can be intimidated by organized competitions if they aren’t professional athletes, kids aren’t, Hutmacher said. Even though Hutmacher said many of the kids who participate do little, if any training in preparation, some like Kennedy spend months preparing. All that work pays off when Kennedy crosses the finish line.

ELMHURST – After swimming along the shore of Lake Michigan and pedaling past her competition on a lakefront path, Kennedy Calcagno of Elmhurst ran her way to first place among girls in her age division Saturday at the Kids Tri Chicago. “My favorite part would probably be the run,” said the 11-year-old, who also won her age division last year. Kennedy’s been racing in the Kids Tri Chicago since she was 6 years old when her mom, Dawn Calcagno, said Kennedy started to get bored with her swim lessons. Also an athlete, Dawn began racing in triathlons after running a marathon and worrying about the toll long-distance running could take on her body. “I feel it’s really important that she has a good balance,” Dawn said of Kennedy racing triathlons. In addition to competing, Kennedy swims year round and runs in Charlie Kern’s Championship Training Academy during the summer where she learns proper stretching along with running techniques, her mother said. Kennedy’s dad, Michael, is also a chiropractor

“It’s kind of a relief that you finished it, and then you’re glad about how you did,” Kennedy said of finishing a triathlon. Kennedy also looks forward to eating after a race. Her favorite post-race meal is a plate of plain crepes served with powdered sugar from Fresh Start Cafe. This was the first time Kennedy’s brother, Michael, 9, raced in the Kids Tri Chicago as well. He’s raced other triathlons with Kennedy before, though. “We’re just trying to give them the opportunity to try as many things as they like,” Dawn said of the kids’ list of sports and activities. She expects them to pick their favorite later, but for Kennedy, it might just be triathlons. She already has her eyes on running or swimming for Notre Dame when she goes to college. She also plans to be a teacher when she grows up. “I want to thank my parents, my running coach Charlie Kern [and] my triathlon coach Wez Parkes,” Kennedy said when asked about her success. The oldest of five siblings, Kennedy inspires her brothers and sister to follow in her footsteps. “They all aspire to do like she does,” Dawn said.

ELMHURST – Flooded yards and basements from last week’s heavy rain drove a couple dozen Elmhurst residents to the Public Works and Buildings Committee meeting Monday. “We desperately need to see action,” Washington Street resident Tracy Fleischer said to the committee. The flood of visitors pushed the meeting to the council chambers instead of the conference room where it’s usually held. Residents recounted the tens of thousands of dollars they had each spent to replace or repair their homes following floods, but many were more concerned about their families’ safety. “It’s not easy taking three small children out of your house if you’re surrounded by sewer water that’s up to your waist or even higher, Maple

Avenue resident George Sanders said. Residents also expressed concerns about their property values and battles with insurance companies after several floods. Patty Ilg, an Alexander Boulevard resident, told the committee she’s redone her basement seven times since 2006 after it’s flooded with sewage, not stormwater. “I’m a fool for doing so, and I’m a fool for staying in Elmhurst,” Ilg said. The overnight rainfall from Aug. 21 to 22 in town ranged from more than 4 inches in the north side of Elmhurst to about 2 inches on the south end, Assistant Public Works Director Cori Tiberi told the committee. “All the systems were operational. The equipment was functional,” Tiberi said. She explained none of the city facilities experienced

Healy maintained that if the four-way stop and relocation doesn’t work out, he will continue to push for an underpass because the York Street crossing is the most dangerous on the Prairie Path. “There is something inherently unsafe about that crossing,” Healy said.

Municipal utility fund In response to a study done by Baxter and Woodman, which revealed water mains break in Elmhurst each year much more than the national average, the preliminary budget allocates $1.4 million toward water main replacements in 2015, growing to $2.3 million in 2019. The preliminary budget includes $6.9 million in 2015 for the waste water treatment plant and sewer projects, including sewer lining and an aeration system upgrade.

I would like to remark on a deeply disturbing comment in a recent issue of Westmont’s Suburban Life by the current Public Safety Committee chairman. In response to the recent epidemic of deaths in DuPage County as a result of heroin overdose, the chairman remarked, “My first reaction was, buy bigger guns, build bigger jails, put more cops on the street.” Thankfully, the state’s attorney dissuaded him. Especially in light of the recent events occurring in Ferguson, Mo., I am deeply disturbed someone overseeing public safety in the community where I reside could have such a profoundly ignorant, dangerous and infantile view. While I do not wish to personally attack the chairman, I must make it known that your views on what is best for our community in the interest of public safety are in no way shared by this constituent. Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst, to curb the use and manufacture of illicit drugs were signed into law Aug. 18. The two bills include House Bill 5526, which will make it illegal for minors to purchase products containing the herbal stimulant kratom, and Senate Bill 3275, which will place certain synthetic drugs into a list of drugs that are illegal to manufacture, deliver or possess with intent to distribute, according to a Reboletti news release. House Bill 5526 prohibits minors from possessing or buying kratom and makes it illegal to sell or distribute products containing kratom, an opiate-like leaf from Southeast Asia, to people under 18. Baby boomers seek simpler living By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

Baby boomers earned a “live to work” reputation and don’t show any signs of stopping soon. A recent Gallup poll found that while the average age at which U.S. workers say they retired has risen steadily from 57 to 61 in the past two decades, boomers will likely extend it even further. The poll found that nearly half (49 percent) of boomers still working say they don’t expect to retire until they are 66 or older, including one in 10 who predicts they will never retire. •‘Broken Hipsters’ On Facebook pages and in blogs, they’re calling themselves Broken Hipsters. The Urban Dictionary defines the term as “a person who may look and act like a hipster, but is really too old to be a hipster,” and it refers to people in their 50s and 60s who have given up their longtime homes and are settling down in trendy condos in diverse urban neighborhoods, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.

According to the American Housing Survey, 9.6 percent of households 55 and older in central cities lived in condos in 2011, the last year for which figures are available, up from 7.3 percent in 2005. Maybe they’re just tired of mowing the lawn. •Boomers and health While baby boomers are living longer, they’re not necessarily living healthier, according to a number of researchers. “One new study found that baby boomers (ages 49 to 67 in 2013) are living longer than people roughly 20 years older but are not healthier. While they are less likely to smoke, have emphysema or a heart attack, they are more likely to be obese, have diabetes or high blood pressure than the previous generation at similar ages,” according to a study done by the Population Reference Bureau. •Simpler living Boomers are tired of going big on everything, and

businesses better start paying attention, according to The Street. “Those baby boomers who worked hard for and embraced the affluent lifestyle of the 1970s through the middle of the last decade — owning large homes and spacious vehicles — have reached a turning point,” said Sheryl Connelly, global consumer trends and a “futurist” for Ford. “This generation is now trending toward a simpler way of living, one that doesn’t eliminate the lavish comforts they’ve come to enjoy.” •Tech spenders Despite being portrayed as luddites who can’t handle technology, boomers dominate the market in terms of money spent on tech, according to Forrester Research’s annual benchmark tech study. While boomers represent 25 percent of the population, they consume 40 percent in total dollars spent on it, according to Nielsen Co.

Salseria Grill & Cantina moves to salsa beat ELMHURST – Salsas can seem like an afterthought in some Mexican restaurants, only there to placate hungry patrons munching on chips before the meal proper arrives. Salseria Grill & Cantina, which has locations in Elmhurst and Chicago, appears to take the opposite approach in as extreme a way as possible. As the name implies, the restaurant offers a large array of dipping and dunking materials – 15 at its salsa bar alone, plus a variety of hot sauces and a warm red sauce at the table. They are the true stars of the menu – made fresh every day – and the taste shows it. In visits to the restaurant’s Elmhurst location, I tried six of the salsas and was most struck by their simplicity. Each had a relatively short list of ingredients, and the varied combinations of tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeño, citrus and other flavors were all distinct and present. The thick chips served as an edible platter to deliver them to my palate. While some mixtures were a bit oniony for my taste, special mention goes to the gordo tomatillo, roasted veggie and verde salsas at the bar. My favorite of all was the warm red served with the chips, whose savory flavor added a wonderful change of pace. Just as the French celebrate sauces, the salsas add a lot to the rest of the food, taking it up another notch. The beef burrito was at its best when used as a way to experiment with different accompaniments. The beef and beans inside gave a very subtle base of flavors that played well with every salsa I threw at them. It was toasted perfectly on the outside, and despite being filling, also comes in two (yes, two) larger sizes to satiate even the hungriest of appetites. In the interest of culinary diversity, my second choice was a combo platter, featuring a pork taco, chile relleno and

The atmosphere was another highlight, featuring huge, bright posters of old Spanish-language movies, and walls of various hot sauces. Music that was loud enough to hear and enjoy, but not drown out conversation, rounded out the lively ambience. Salseria’s waitstaff was very attentive, and I was made

to feel welcome. On the liquid front for another visit, the menu highlights Margaritas and homemade sangria along with imported beer.

If you like baseball, you’ve probably watched the World Series on television. But did you know that Little League Baseball also has a world series? It’s played every August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Little League Baseball was created. This year, the sport is celebrating its 75th anniversary. By the end of the 19th century, baseball was known as America’s pastime, but there were few opportunities for children to play organized games. That’s when Carl Stotz of Williamsport stepped in. Stotz often played ball with his young nephews, and in 1938 decided to organize a program for them as a way to teach them about sportsmanship and teamwork. There were just three teams in the early years, but the sport quickly grew, and by the 1950s, there were teams all over the U.S. as well as other countries. Today, more than 200,000 teams in 80 countries play Little League. The rules have changed a bit in 75 years. Little League used to be for 11- and 12-yearold boys only, but today, 13-year-olds are allowed in certain circumstances. Girls are allowed, too. This year, Mo’ne Davis from Philadelphia made a splash when she took the mound in the Little League World Series as the 18th girl to play in the series and the ﬁrst female pitcher to throw a shutout, which means the opposing team did not score any runs against her team.

Voris is one of three returning starters on the O-line this season and is one of the team leaders for first-year coach Matt Monken. Perrone: Everybody is working hard. We’re all putting in work. I think with that everybody doing their job is just going to make us successful. Santaromita: Are you excited about the conference switch?

Santaromita: What are your goals for the season? Perrone: It’s probably the same as every year. Just go out, put it all on the line for a state championship. That’s what we always hope for. Santaromita: Are you trying to play in college at all? Perrone: Right now I’m just worried about the season. I’m not worried about anything in the future. Santaromita: With the new offense this season is there anything you are doing differently on the offensive line? Perrone: No, it’s pretty much all the same for us.

ELMHURST – IC Catholic doesn’t have many returning starters back this fall, but Michael Perrone is one of them. The two-way lineman joins Stephen Stam and Sam Lytton as key seniors on both lines this season. Perrone, who also plays baseball in the spring, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about the Knights’ upcoming season and their switch from the Suburban Christian Conference to the Metro Suburban Conference.
