“I believe we’re at the point now where we need to make a formal ask to move this process forward,” Mayor Steve Morley said.

ELMHURST – Residents thanked members of the Public Works and Buildings Committee on Monday after the committee discussed priorities for stormwater mitigation projects they plan to bring to the council next week. “[I’m] very happy to hear the discussion seems like things are moving forward,” said Tracy Fleischer, a Washington Street resident who started an online petition more than a month ago asking the city, park district and School District 205 to move more quickly on plans to mitigate flooding in town.

Her appreciation was echoed by a few other residents, who thanked the committee for their efforts to move forward with stormwater mitigation projects.

“The purpose is to get this in front of our council to show that we’re serious about making a commitment,” Kennedy said.

The committee discussed a draft action plan that identified four pilot projects of those suggested in a report by Christopher B. Burke Engineering.

Two would be on park district property and two on District

“I think we can pull off all four next year,” said Chris Healy, committee vice chairman and Fifth Ward alderman.

City staff estimated engineering would take about six months for each project, but if the city were to hire additional engineering firms to do the work simultaneously, it would be possible to complete the four projects in 2015. In that case, the city would need to budget funding for all four projects next year.

Michael Bram, Third Ward alderman and committee member, wondered why the four priority pilot projects needed to be divided equally between the park district and school district if another park project may be more cost-effective and help more homes than the school projects.

“Our highest priority shouldn’t be based on what government body we’re working with, necessarily,” Bram said.

Morley said asking one of the government entities for three pilot projects instead of two could cause a stumbling block.

“I think it’s most important that we get projects moving and that both entities are part of the process,” Kennedy said.

“It definitely makes a statement in all types of communities,” Wingert said, explaining drug overdoses happen everywhere.

In fact, Wingert said the number of overdose deaths are increasing. The tombstones began as a statement piece a few years ago at Roosevelt University for the annual overdose awareness event.

Now, she said overdose deaths are up to 105 a day across the country.

“It’s not only heroin. It’s the painkillers. It’s the Vicodin,” Cummings said.

She said her son’s addiction started with prescription opiates before he was led to heroin.

Those prescription drugs are just as deadly, though, Wingert warns.

“People don’t understand the connection between opiate prescription drugs and opiate street drugs such as heroin,” Wingert said.

Wingert said the perception that addiction is a criminal activity often discourages people from admitting they’re addicted or seeking help.

“I think if people saw it as a health issue they would start recognizing it as the epidemic it is,” Wingert said.

Cummings believes despite recent attention to the presence of heroin in Chicago’s suburb, many people don’t want to admit opiate addiction exists in Elmhurst or other communities.

“The suburbs still don’t realize that a drug addict is not someone in a crack house,” Cummings said.

Through a support group, Cummings has heard stories and seen photos of those who have died of drug overdoses, many of whom she described as nice kids who had everything.

“It’s a matter of saving people’s lives, and we can only do that with education,” Wingert said.

Cummings hopes people passing by her home while the tombstones are there are motivated to learn more about not only preventing drug addiction but how to save lives.

“My son would be alive today if the girl he was with wasn’t afraid of repercussions of her own drug use,” Cummings said.

She wants to spread awareness about Illinois’ Good Samaritan law, which encourages people to call 911 when someone is overdosing by providing some protection from criminal drug charges.

ABC 7 news director calls Elmhurst home

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Elmhurst native Sarah Dunlap Burke’s journalism career has taken her from Denver to New York and most recently Boston, but she’s happy to say she’s moving back.

“I haven’t been able to call Chicago home since I graduated high school,” Burke said.

Later this month, Burke will start as assistant news director at ABC 7 Chicago. And although she’ll be living in Chicago, she plans to visit her hometown often with her husband, Tom, and their young son, Harrison.

“I miss the Prairie Path,” the former York High School cross country and track runner said.

Harrison played a big part in Burke’s decision to move back because she wants him to be near family.

Two of Burke’s three brothers still live in the area. While her mother, Beth, a lifelong Elmhurst resident, recently passed away, her father, Lloyd, still lives in town.

Burke credits her parents for raising her to be confident.

“I’m not a shrinking violet,” Burke said.

Her ability to jump into any situation has propelled her career.

Her first day at WBZ-TV in Boston was the same day as the Boston Marathon bombing.

“I was pregnant. I was new, and a crazy story unfolded right before my eyes,” Burke said.

A year later, she led the station’s coverage of the anniversary, reporting on the marathon and highlighting survivor stories.

Since her station had the rights to cover the marathon when the bombing happened, they had been the first ones covering the tragedy.

“The entire country was watching us,” Burke said.

Burke’s experience covering tragedies like the Boston Marathon bombing, Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting illustrate for her the importance of what she does for a living.

“When something happens, and you need to know what’s going on, people turn on the TV,” Burke said.

She said television allows people to develop a relationship with anchors and reporters that provides an aspect of comfort

during devastating news.

“There’s a relationship there that doesn’t exist on Twitter,” Burke said.

She remembers journalists, like Ron Magers, who she saw as trustworthy when she watched the Chicago news growing up. She’ll soon be working with Magers in Chicago.

“He’s one of the most recognizable journalists in the city of Chicago,” Burke said.

Burke, who’s background is in producing, most enjoys finding creative and engaging ways to tell stories.

“We need to be able to tell stories that have meaning to people,” Burke said.

With a young child, the job isn’t always easy. Burke joked that she doesn’t sleep. Her husband has put his investigative reporting career on hold to stay home with Harrison for now.

“It’s not a job that you can do really half way,” Burke said, explaining she often works long hours at the will of unpredictable stories.

To Burke, it’s well worth it to provide a service to the public by providing information and keeping lawmakers accountable.

“It checks a lot of boxes for Type A people like myself,” Burke said of her deadline-driven, competitive career field.

As varied as her job can be from day to day, Burke said it always comes back to the same purpose.

“At the end of the day, what we do is about people,” she said.

LOMBARD – Joan Knippen, chairwoman for the Lombard Race for the Cure, recently received the Susan G. Komen Chicagoland Area Promise of One award.

The award was given at the 2014 Komen Chicago Impact Awards Luncheon honoring grantees and volunteers of Komen Chicago. The honor, which requires approval by both the Komen Chicago Board of Directors and Susan G. Komen’s national headquarters, is granted to an outstanding volunteer in recognition of exceptional contributions to the organization and the fight against breast cancer, according to a Komen news release.

Knippen first pulled together a team for Race for the Cure seven years ago after hearing an ad on the radio. Since then, Knippen has moved from race participant to serving on the race committees for the past five years. She is serving as both the education/mission chairwoman for the Chicago Race for the Cure as well as race chairwoman for the Lombard Race for the Cure, the release said.

In particular, Knippen is focused on promoting awareness and education about breast health, early detection and breast cancer treatment, according to the release.

The Lombard Race for the Cure will be Sept. 21 at the Yorktown Center.

Wedding proposal and speed highlight Cycling Classic SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – Spectators lined the bicycle race course circling Elmhurst College last week to watch the pros speed past in the Elmhurst Cycling Classic.

Some posted up by the start and finish line in front of Wilder Mansion, while those who lived on the route enjoyed the front row seats in their yards.

Spectators and riders alike enjoyed cooler weather than last year’s inaugural race.

Jefferson fifth-grader Mia Beres won a brand new Trek bike for her first-place essay about bike safety, but all winners chosen from each participating school led the Family Fun Ride. Between the Women’s Pro and Men’s Pro races, everyone was given the chance to ride the same course the pros race.

One lucky bicyclist, Jostein Alvestad, of Elmhurst and his bride-to-be, Sarah Mahoney O’Brien, even rode a victory lap around the course on a tandem bike after she said “Yes.”

The Elmhurst Cycling Classic features races circling the Elmhurst College campus July 25, including a family fun ride.

Renovations to make library ‘even better’ Shifts in society and in our community are changing the way you use your library. With construction bids coming in August, the plan is to “break ground” in early October by replacing the wood in the main staircase with more durable stone-like flooring. The rest of the second-floor renovation will proceed in phases: Phase 1: Shifting the book collection; building a teen area, including an enclosed room for creative and scholarly work.

A group of Elmhurst fifth-graders turned Emily Swiatek’s summer book club into a mission. They were inspired to create a cardboard arcade after watching a YouTube video. The project was a success as the one-day arcade on Columbia Avenue raised more than $300 for Foundation for Faces, which provides resources for children.

Oak Brook Pinstripes offers ‘sophisticated fun’ OAK BROOK – A luxurious reimagining of restaurant and bowling alley is at the playful heart of Pinstripes.

On a recent Sunday evening, we discovered it to be home to three B’s: a tempting bistro, indoor and outdoor bocce ball courts, and upscale bowling lanes.

Situated on the perimeter of Oakbrook Center, the expansive two-story building extends to private party spaces and patios landscaped for privacy, and boasting a water feature, fire pits and flaming torches that bring all the elements together for a fun night out as a couple or with friends and family.

Kids and adults will find bocce ball an easy game to pick up, and parents will relish the younger set having a ready diversion. But games are optional, because dining at Pinstripes is an attraction in itself.

The patio full, we sat in the all-season section outside the attractive bistro with its stone and wood decor and eye-catching wine cellar to complement the craft beer selection.

We were under a roof, but the walls – giant glass garage doors – were open to a beautiful summer night. Later on, with cappuccino in hand, we made our way to the circle of Adirondack chairs surrounding a fire pit.

We didn’t want an evening to end that had started with a basket of freshly baked, warm bread accompanied by herbed oil and Parmesan. My companion enjoyed a tomato basil soup, and then our wonderful entrees arrived.

He’d selected a wood-fired flatbread with fig and prosciutto, a generous eight slices that easily could double as an appetizer for four. The sweetand-savory balance of cheese and toppings was superb, and we both decided it was the closest we’d come in our eternal search for the perfect thin crust. Actually, I think we arrived.

Having actual golf holes is great for practicing things that can’t be tested on the range, such as uphill, downhill or sidehill lies and working on pre-shot routines. Both mats and grass tees can be used at the range, while there also is a chipping and putting green.

Hitting off grass tees in practice more closely resembles playing conditions out on the course and better prepares players for the rigors of a round. In addition to the driving range, where the price for a bucket of balls starts at $4.50, there is a large short-game near the range where players can practice the chipping and putting.

Take a tour of nine of the area’s best golf practice facilities

Maximize your practice time with a 1-hour routine The old adage says practice makes perfect, and the same holds true on the golf course.

Practicing is lots of fun – not! – but it can be if you do it properly and use your time well. There are so many things that can be fit into a good practice session that the room I have here is not nearly big enough to list 10 percent of them, but I will try to give you a few ideas to make it more structured and fun.

Let’s start by imagining the average practice session lasts one hour.

Here is how I suggest you split up the time.

0 to 5 minutes: Stretch, make warm-up swings with a low iron (I use a pitching wedge) and focus on keeping the swing as floppy and loose as possible. Do not worry how well you hit these shots.

5 to 10 minutes: Using a sand wedge or similar club, find a target within 50 yards and hit shots at it.

COMMUNITY VOICE IAN GRANT This should be a very easy swing and the effort level will be low. It also will help a great deal with your tempo and timing. Focus on the process of the swing making good shoulder turns and hitting each ball crisply.

10 to 20 minutes: Hit short-iron shots. Find a target on the range and hit wedge, 9-iron and 8-iron shots at it. Focus on keeping the swing fluid and finishing every shot in a pose you would be proud of if the Golf Magazine photographer was taking your photo at the end of your swing.

20 to 30 minutes: Hit mid- and long-iron shots. Similar to short-iron shots, find a target but this time make it a 10-yard wide target or be-

tween two points. Focus on stability and balance with these full swings and again work on the process, not the result.

30 to 40 minutes: Driver and fairway woods. The target increases in size here to 20 to 30 yards wide. Focus on keeping the swing smooth and relaxed. Try to hit five consecutive drives in your “fairway.”

40 to 50 minutes: Practice chipping and sand play. Work on the shots that will help you score better.

I count the number of successful ups and downs that I make for every five balls that I hit. First, that gives me a small number of balls to hit and second, it helps me chart my progress.

50 to 60 minutes: Head to the putting green. Alternate between short putts and long putts and, if possible, finish off by playing a nine-hole putting course around the practice green using one ball and keeping your score.

As you can see, this practice session really moves along and doesn’t leave much time to get bored.

Finally, in keeping with Rory McIlroy’s win at The British Open Championship this year, take a page out of his book and focus on the process while hitting balls. It is a key element in my instruction and if done properly will help lower your score.

After hanging up the spikes, the Peoria native was hired by the White Sox as a special assistant to general manager Rick Hahn in July of 2013.

On July 23, Thome made an appearance at the White Sox Silver Slugger Camp in Lisle and signed autographs before talking with the aspiring Major Leaguers in attendance.

Thome also took time to speak with Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about teaching the young players, working for the White Sox, the Hall of Fame induction of White Sox legend Frank Thomas and his own chances of making it into the Hall of Fame.

Schmid: What is it like for you to be able to come to these camps and spend time with the kids?

Thome: It’s nice, especially this time of the year. My son is in youth baseball now so that gets me involved. The biggest challenge is getting kids back on a baseball field, so getting a group of kids like this playing and having fun is great. I remember back in Peoria growing up, we’d always play pick-up games.

It’s important to get kids back involved with playing ball in any capacity.

Schmid: How much did it mean to you to come back to the White Sox as a special assistant, and how are you enjoying it so far?

Thome: I love it, working for Jerry [Reinsdorf, White Sox Chairman] and Rick [Hahn, General Manager] and Kenny [Williams, Executive Vice President]. It’s just been enjoyable. I get the best of both worlds, I get to be at home but I also get to be at the ballpark. Plus, I’ve gone on a few assignments to the minor leagues and gotten a

Schmid: How special was it to play for the White Sox for four seasons?

Thome: It was a special time in my career. Getting traded from Philadelphia to Chicago, my mom had passed away and that brought my family closer together. Getting a chance to come home and play, that was a dream come true and those three, four years were a fantastic time in my life.

Schmid: Is retirement treating you well?

Thome: I’m enjoying it.

When Jerry called and brought me back, I found that thing in my life where I could still be around the game but also be with my family. It eased the transition to where I’m at. It’s definitely been great to learn the other side, to learn about the other parts of the game I never knew existed.

Schmid: What aspects of the game do you miss?

Thome: Competing, I miss digging in and competing.

That never goes away. You can be retired for 10 years and still have that desire to want to get back in the box.

But now it’s about passing the torch down, and with the

Thome: Frank no question is a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He was a force when he played and it is great for the city of Chicago and for the White Sox. He is very well deserving, from the player’s side, just look at his numbers.

And I think I will let the process play its course, I try not to get too far ahead of myself. But it would be great to be a part of it and if it ever happened one day, I would be as excited as Frank is.

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Swim Team recently wrapped up the summer season at the Illinois Summer Regional meet.

EST sent 25 athletes to the meet, which took place at the UIC natatorium and featured swimmers from 24 states.

In all, 12 EST swimmers made 24 trips to the awards podium with top-8 finishes, including three champions.

Connor Groya (10 years old) won the 50-yard breaststroke yard breast and ascended the award stand again in 50 butterfly (third) and 100 individual medley (fourth).

Flanagan Waldherr (14 years old) was the winner in the 500 freestyle.

Jeremy Harrington (9 years old) won the 50 butterfly and placed eighth in both the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Sam Marlott (17 years old) placed second in the 100 butterfly, Connor McCarthy (11 years old) swam to second in the 200 butterfly, and Hannah Nolte (18 years old) was second in the 100 breaststroke. Nolte made it to the award stand in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, finishing third in each race.

Daniel Bajda (12 years old) was third in the 200 breaststroke, fourth in the 50 breaststroke, fifth in the 100 breaststroke and sixth in the 100 individual medley.

Paula Nolte (16 years old) took fourth in the 400 individual medley, and Amanda Polach (12 years old) was fourth in the 50 butterfly and eighth in the 400 individual medley.

Molly Hill (11 years old) was fifth in the 50 freestyle.
