DPZ Committee Chairman Scott Levin said he wasn’t sure why business people did not attend the meeting, but the proposed six-story parking garage still needs to pass committee and then the City Council. He also expressed his concern about how to proceed as a committee since the council voted to apply for the six-story building and associated variances. “In terms of our role as a committee, I struggle with the idea that we can act other than what the will of the council is,” Levin said. Committee members agreed they could submit whatever report they saw fit, regardless of the council’s previous votes on the matter. Committee members differed

on what would be an appropriate height for the structure. “If you want my opinion, I think that the study that was formed took the extreme of parking,” Levin said. Dannee Polomsky, Third Ward alderman and committee vice chairman, and Levin, both of whom previously proposed during a Committee of the Whole meeting what they saw as a compromise – a five-story building – still thought five stories would be best. “I think 55 feet on the table months ago is different than 55 feet on the table now,” Polomsky said. Resident Claude Pagacz didn’t believe a parking garage would drive more businesses into downtown and questioned why the parking garage was such a large priority for the city. “There are a lot more important things in this town than that garage,” said Pagacz, mentioning flooding. ELMHURST – The Development Planning and Zoning Committee was split Monday on the height of the proposed Addison Parking Deck, and agreed to continue discussion April 14. A handful of residents criticized the project and the city’s process for reviewing it. Tamara Brenner, one of two residents who were asked to wrap up their testimony during the Zoning and Planning Commission’s public hearing, criticized the commission for not discussing portions of her testimony that challenged the city consultant’s parking study. “If they don’t consider the information that’s brought before them, what is the purpose of having a public hearing?” Brenner asked. Elmhurst resident Michael Krumrey agreed that the parking study overestimated the amount of parking needed by using ratios of parking spaces to square feet of development that were larger than those used in other towns. He also said the study focused on time windows when parking is most in demand instead of looking to meet the average demand for parking throughout the day.

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – When Linda Ekendahl moved to Elmhurst from Connecticut in her late 20s 10 years ago to open the state’s first Edible Arrangements store with a friend, she knew right away she loved the Chicago area and people. “I just remember falling in love with the city ... and falling in love with the people,” Ekendahl said. After a decade in Elmhurst, she credits her success to her marketing efforts and the business’ excellent customer service. In the spirit of customer appreciation, Ekendahl, who is now the store’s sole owner, is offering $10 off any $40 order throughout April for her store’s anniversary. “Marketing and customer service ... they go hand in hand,” Ekendahl said. Linda Ekendahl of Elmhurst is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her Edible Arrangements store in downtown Elmhurst with a special deal throughout April. and her employees do their best to listen to customer needs and make recommendations specific to the occasion for which they’re shopping. Ekendahl believes in building lasting relationships with her customers and hopes the April deal shows her exist-
ing customers she appreciates them while inviting new people to try Edible Arrangements. “If someone is unhappy we really go above and beyond to make them happy … we care,” Ekendahl said about her drive to please all of her customers.
She’s always been on York Street, but her first storefront sat north of North Avenue. After five years, corporate remodeling initiatives and her growing business led her to seek out a new location. She moved with the help of a $10,000 retail grant she applied for through the city and chose her current location at 209 N. York St. in 2009. “I never ever really knew the difference between being here and being there. It’s totally night and day,” Ekendahl said.
One of the biggest surprises Ekendahl found when she moved to her newest location, customers were continually expressing their excitement to see an Edible Arrangements store in Elmhurst. “What killed me was when I first opened up the store here, people would walk in and say ‘We’re so glad you finally opened up one of these in Elmhurst.’” With Mariano’s and the LA Fitness, which will replace the Waverton Hotel, Ekendahl believes the north end of York Street in Elmhurst is definitely changing. Behind her cozy and colorful storefront sits a spacious kitchen area where pineapple flowers, chocolate dipped strawberries and cupcake-shaped fruits are assembled into fresh-made bouquets. Police investigate two possible overdose deaths SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – A week after Elmhurst police responded to the possible overdose of Kelly Conner of Elmhurst, the department was investigating the death of a Chicago man who may have overdosed on heroin. Daniel Erickson, 54, of 4051 N. Kildare Ave., Chicago, was found unconscious March 21 at the Extended Stay America Hotel, 550 W. Grand Ave., according to a statement issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth. Police responded to a call at 10:37 p.m. When officers arrived, they learned Erickson had ingested heroin earlier in the evening and may have overdosed. Police did not see any signs of life and believed Erickson may have died a
short time before they arrived, according to the release. The investigation revealed two other people were in the room and had fallen asleep. When they awoke, they discovered the victim unresponsive and cold. Witnesses were taken to Elmhurst police headquarters and told police the victim had snorted heroin in the hotel room earlier that night, the release stated. Elmhurst police detectives responded to the scene, and police evidence technicians processed the hotel room. Erickson was taken to the DuPage Coroner’s Office for examination, and the case remains under active investigation by the Detective Section of the Elmhurst Police Department.

Kendell Wright’s thirdgrade students were preparing their own fresh Mexican meal. “It’s reinforcing a lot of the things they’re already doing in school, but it’s related to a real-world experience,” said chef Laura Valcour, owner and instructor of Chefs for a Day in Willowbrook. Valcour chose to lead a lesson around Mexican food because Wright’s class had just finished a lesson on Mexico. She also incorporated math and fractions into the cooking demonstration by asking student to cut quesadillas in thirds and halves. When the Field Elementary School Parent Teacher Association raised more money than typical for this school year, the group decided to start the Let’s Get Cookin’! program. PTA mom Jessica Worobec hopes to find grant funding to continue the program next year.

Valcour plans to teach every class in every grade at Field so all of the students get a chance to learn at least one recipe. After students earn their chef toques by preparing a fresh meal and sampling their work, Valcour sends
them home with the recipe. “Now they’re going home to mom and dad with knowledge they can share,” Valcour said. Ella Przysclik said she planned to try out some of what she learned with her mom at home. Instead of telling students what they shouldn’t eat, Valcour focuses on giving them a fun experience with fresh foods that they’ll want to repeat at home. “I think if you ... give them the skills, every child tries,”

City to consider increasing new housing impact fee SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – With pending residential housing construction on the former Elmhurst Memorial Berteau Avenue campus, Elmhurst will begin reviewing its current impact fees rate schedule. Established in 2006, the Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 receives $6,500 for
every new single family housing unit, and the park district receives $1,500, according to a city news release. The fee is meant to offset the one-time property tax gap created when new additional housing is added to the community. The fee only applies to housing added to the community, not replaced housing. As a result of ongoing May-

Because the redevelopment of the Berteau property is expected to begin fall of 2014, the referral calls for a prompt review of the subdivision impact fee. According to the release, the impact fees should be increased to meet market expectations and adhere to the current Elmhurst code. The city projects that a surplus of $190,000 in TIF I will be declared in 2014 and a surplus of $1,826,000 is projected for 2015. The release of surplus funds are part of an overall ongoing effort to work with both the park district and school district for the mutual benefit of the city and residents, the release stated. The referral is expected to be on the City Council agenda April 7.

While she began as the first store in Illinois, there are now other Edible Arrangement franchises in the western suburbs where people can place orders, but she continues to be successful. She credits her marketing background and relationship with the community. As excited as she is to celebrate her decade of business, Ekendahl can hardly believe it’s been that long since she moved into her first Elmhurst apartment just a block from her original store. “It doesn’t feel like 10 years at all,” Ekendahl said.

PARCC Assessments and Common Core In 2010, along with 45 other states, Illinois adopted a set of educational performance standards known as the Common Core. The Illinois State Board of Education, led by State Superintendent Chris Koch, decided that Illinois should join a multi-state consortium – the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. This consortium developed what is known as PARCC Assessments, a common set of computer-based kindergarten to 12th grade tests in English language arts and math aligned to the Common Core standards. Superintendent Koch serves COMMUNITY on PARCC’s Governing Board. VOICE PARCC Assessments will Carol replace current state assessSnyder ments (ISAT, PSAE and eventually the ACT) in grades third through 11th at all Illinois public schools beginning in the 2014-15 school year. Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night. Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours. Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show. Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic. It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

ELMHURST – Mayor Steve Morley declared Tuesday Mohegan Tribe of the great Salt Creek Nation day in Elmhurst by official proclamation. Claire Linden, a volunteer with the Oakbrook Terrace Salvation Army, also presented the Mohegan Tribe Indian Princesses with a traveling trophy for their fundraising efforts as holiday bell-ringers. “When we went bell-ringing, we had to sing songs,” Stella Kohl, 8, said of the oneday event. Members of the father-daughter organization took turns standing outside of the Jewel Osco at 153 Schiller St. Dec. 7 last year for seven hours collecting $892.21. “It’s really great to see young people helping out because we can always use the help,” Linden said. The tribe made up of 50 fathers and 53 daughters ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade has been participating in the Salvation Army’s annual bell-ringing fundraiser for the past three years and hopes to win the trophy again next year. “It was freezing,” Madison Adelsbach, 8, said of the weather in December during the fundraiser. But she was

Aside from that fundraiser, the tribe participates in father-daughter outings like camping and horseback riding, as well as charity work like packaging meals for Feed My Starving Children and collecting toys for Toys for Tots. “It’s nice to see the kids taking on the values that their parents have,” Mohegan Chief Christopher Kodosky said of the girls’ fundraising success. As proud as the princesses were of their work braving the bitter cold and singing holiday tunes in exchange for donations last year, they consistently named one person as their favorite part about being an Indian Princess. “I like being with my dad,” said 8-year-old Jackson Elementary student Sidney Ashby. Her thoughts were echoed by one daughter after another.

ELMHURST – When Miss Illinois visited Park Place in October, the residents enjoyed her so much they invited her back. Brittany Smith, 24, of Elmhurst returned this month to showcase her Irish side at the retirement community. “I am more Italian than I am Irish,” Smith admitted. Her fast-paced dance routine elicited applause and cheers from the Park Place residents who came to watch. “I was really close with my Papa,” said Smith, explaining why she’s considering a career in geriatrics. While she spends much of her time speaking to children of all ages at schools and events, Smith admits she especially enjoys visits with seniors. “The more I’ve spent time with older adults, the more I’ve enjoyed it,” Smith said. When the new Miss Illinois is crowned in June, Smith plans to use the scholarship she’s earned through the Miss Illinois Scholarship Association to attend graduate school to be a physician assistant. “I was amazed that she’s not letting this just define her,” Anne Adona said. “She’s going on to do other things.” While she’s not a resident, Adona comes to Park Place for rehabilitation services and
always takes advantage of the facilities programs. Adona said her friends were happy she talked them into joining her for Smith’s performance. Aside from her Irish dance, Smith described some of her social platforms, which include keeping older adults active, and her experience at the Miss America Pageant in September. Adona asked if it was at all like “Toddlers and Tiaras,” and Smith said absolutely not. In fact, Smith plans on standing up in Miss Arkansas’ wedding as a bridesmaid along with Miss America and Miss West Virginia. “She’s excellent in front of people, and she has a lot of poise,” said Roger Groenboom after Smith answered several questions from the audience. Other audience members seemed equally impressed with Smith. Fay Widholm, 89, commented on Smith’s charming personality and public speaking skills. Smith stayed after to visit, take photos and sign autographs for dozens of residents and guests. “These are the people, too, that grew up watching Miss America,” Smith said.

STRAWBERRY MARKS “Hemangiomas” are benign tumors or birthmarks caused by an abnormal number of blood vessels in the skin resulting from proliferation. They may either be superficial in nature or reside deep within the skin. Superficial hemangiomas, which are commonly known as strawberry marks, are raised and bright red. They usually develop at approximately age six months, then begin to subside and fade until they totally disappear by around age seven. They do not require treatment unless they interfere with a vital function such as when they block vision. Deep (or cavernous) hemangiomas are blue-purple growths that do not spontaneously clear. They may be treated with oral corticosteroids, pulsed-dye laser treatments, surgery, or cryotherapy (freezing).

ELMHURST – Gov. Pat Quinn and state officials announced $282.8 million of funding for an expansion of the interstates surrounding O’Hare Airport, according to a news release from state Sen. Tom Cullerton. This funding is for the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project which is expected to reduce congestion and improve west suburban access to the interstate system, the
release said. Cullerton, D-Villa Park, sponsored a resolution last year authorizing the project, which is part of a $1.4 billion tollway improvement project announced March 21. Through its Move Illinois capital program, the Illinois Tollway has pledged $3.1 billion toward the $3.4 billion EOWA project. Local officials need $300 million to cover the gap in funding. The Illinois Tollway broke ground last year on the West-
ern access Project to extend the road east along Thorndale Avenue to O’Hare International Airport. The project will also connect to Interstate 90 on the north and Interstate 294 on the south. Western access is expected to create 65,000 direct and indirect jobs by 2040 when combined with completion of the western terminal at O’Hare. It will also save $145 million in annual motorist travel costs and be the first all-electronic toll road in the state.

The pantry helps feed hundreds of local families each month. This year’s egg hunt will host a tent for donations to the pantry. Donations of cash, grocery and drugstore gift cards will be accepted as well as nonperishable food items.

Elmhurst resident named Public Citizen of the Year ELMHURST – An Elmhurst resident was honored by the National Association of Social Workers Illinois Chapter last week. David B. Bingaman was
hundreds of thousands of lives during his 38-year social work career. He served as social worker at the Hines VA Hospital, founded the Vet Center in Oak Park, directed a program at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, served as administrator of the Illinois Department of Alcoholism & Substance Abuse, worked as vice-president of Martha Washington Hospital, managed the nationwide Employee Assistance Program for the U.S. Postal Service that counseled 30,000 clients per year, and currently serves as deputy regional administrator for the Health Resources & Services Administration at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Bingaman was honored at an awards ceremony March 13 during Social Work Month.

Spirito! Singers to hold auditions in Elmhurst SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA ELMHURST – The Spirito! Singers, a nonprofit choral organization comprised of three ensembles, are holding open auditions for the upcoming 2014-15 season. The Bravura, open to young women in high school, perform, tour and record. The Ragazze are fifth- to eighth-
grade girls who train and perform. The Men of Spirito! is a performance group for men 18 and older. The Spirito! 2013-14 rosters include singers from 35 schools crossing 16 communities. Each ensemble rehearses once weekly at locations in Elmhurst and La Grange. All ensembles perform individually and jointly at two major,
seasonal concerts in December and May. Each ensemble also performs at a number of churches and community events throughout the season. Auditions will be held from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. April 25 at Yorkfield Presbyterian Church, 1099 S. York Road in Elmhurst. La Grange auditions will be from 12:30 to 4 p.m. April
26, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 28 and noon to 1:30 p.m. May 3 at Grace Lutheran Church, 200 N. Catherine Ave. in La Grange. D-205 students make move at chess tourney ELMHURST – District 205 held its annual Chess Tournament on March 19 at York High School Commons.
Elmhurst chess players from second-graders to middle schoolers participated. Awards included trophies, ribbons and raffle prizes. Matched within their grade level, competitors played five matches. First-place winners included Anita Wary (eighth grade), Salvatore Stangarone (fifth grade), Nolan Crowell (fourth grade) and Johnny Dietz (third grade). Over $200M in community contributions ELMHURST – Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare’s Community Benefit totaled $206.3 million in fiscal year 2013, according to an Elmhurst Memorial news release. Between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, the health system provided 7 percent more financially to community benefit efforts than in fiscal year 2012. That includes nearly $26 million in charity care for medical services provided free or partially reimbursed, according to the release. Other community benefit efforts included improved access to physicians through Illinois Health Partners, medically based weight loss clinics and the expansion of the Mental Health First Aid program, stated the release. Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel. While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location. Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family. My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth. Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal. Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket. While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty. For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream. The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly. My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces. On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate. The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Clara’s takes a 14-ounce, bone-in veal chop and grills it to medium. It’s served over marinara sauce and topped with golden brown mozzarella, Fontinella, Romano and Parmesan cheeses. Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side. Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we
had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask. We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either. While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back
seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

Plenty to be proud of at York By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com As the snow continues to melt, spring sports are starting to take center stage. York had a number of standout athletes and accomplishments. Before spring kicks into full gear, here’s a last look back at those winter successes at York this past season, in no particular order.
1. Senior-laden boys hoops team wins 25 games, regional
The York girls basketball team entered the season with high expectations, but got off to a horrid start. The Dukes were just 3-8 while playing against tough teams to start the season. Then the team headed to Oswego East for the Wolves Holiday Classic. The lightbulb went on and the team won four games in a row to take the tournament title. Jessica Bianchi and Sarah Milkowski were selected to the all-tournament team and York got its season back on track. The Dukes finished the season 15-13 and came up just short in a regional final. “In the first half [of the first game at Oswego East] it looked like we were sleep walking,” York coach John Constable said. “From that point on things kind of turned. We got really aggressive and started making easy baskets out of our defense.”

York was second to Lake Park in the Hinsdale South regional and third to Leyden and Resurrection at the Leyden sectional. Those performances were good enough to advance the Dukes as a team. Despite the loss of David Cohn, who just finished his freshman season at Colorado State, the Dukes came back even stronger this season. A senior-heavy starting lineup led York to a 25-6 record and a second straight regional title. Frank Toohey, who will face off with Cohn in the Mountain West Conference next year as a member of Air Force, was essential inside. Senior guards Charlie Rose, Stanley Roberts and Jack Heinle also started to give the team plenty of talent and poise. The Dukes lost in the final of the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic, lost the West Suburban Silver title on the final game and lost the sectional semifinal to Morton in a tense triple overtime game to remember. Those near misses don’t mask the things York did accomplish this season, surpassing most expectations. “They’re just tremendous competitors, great people,” York coach Vince Doran said. “It’s an absolute honor to coach kids like that. They’ll be successful in life and do great things after they leave college.”

Outlook: IC Catholic returns six starters from a year ago, including standout junior twoway player Jessica Conenna. Conenna is a Northern Illinois commit who hit .475 with 22 RBIs and had a 1.64 ERA in 132 innings in the pitching circle last year. Fellow junior Gabby Curran (.384, 17 RBIs, 29 runs scored) and sophomore Anjella Farmer (.440, 26 RBIs) had big offensive numbers last year as well. Junior Lindsey Montoya and freshman Katelyn Falduto are also primed for big seasons. “We are looking to build upon our success from last couple of seasons and we feel we have balanced and strong mix of offense and defense,” coach Frank Reaber said. “We have a tough schedule to start our season and we hope to get off to a good start. Our goal this season is to make a strong run in the state playoffs.”

Outlook: The Trojans will have a young squad this season under first-year coach Aaron Moore. Moore is also the general manager of the Chicago Bandits pro softball team,

The leadoff hitter can set the table for power hitters in the middle of the lineup, Isabella Jaeger and Abby Solem. “It’s pretty exciting to be able to build on last season,” coach Drew McGuire said. “They’re ready to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.” Junior pitcher Brooke Bandy was one of the surprise standouts last season and returns as the ace in the circle. Battery mate Sarah Milkowski and all four infielders are back, giving the Dukes a strong defensive unit. Abby Solem and Isabella Jaeger return at the corners and provide power in the middle of the order. Senior Taylor Pankau and junior Audrey Kosman return in the middle infield. Scalzitti covers a lot of ground in center field. Returner Morgan Mehring and newcomer sophomore Amanda Karnatz are among those that will see time at the other two outfield spots. Sophomore Gabby Magnifico and senior Hannah Latimer will also be regulars. 8SPORTS BRIEFS Chicago Bears youth NAYS to host spring basketball tournaments camps coming to area North American Youth Sports will host two youth basketball tournaments in the area this spring. There will be NAYS tournaments at Elmhurst College from April 25 to 27 and at Romeoville High School from May 2 to 4. The cost to enter each tournament is $160 per team and guarantees each squad a minimum of three games. The entry deadline for the Elmhurst tournament is April 4 and the entry deadline for the Romeoville event is April 11. 3. IC boys snap regional jinx 1. IC girls basketball nearly matches volleyball, gets to state Following the lead of the girls volleyball team, the IC Catholic girls basketball went to state. The Knights won the first state trophy in program history by taking fourth place in Class 2A. Senior forward Rory Manion, who also starred for the volleyball team in its Class 2A state title, was key to the team’s success along with senior guard Grace Vitek. The Knights won all four sectional games by 19 points or more and then escaped with a 40-38 win over Seton Academy in the supersectional. “This has been our goal all season,” Vitek said of making state. “Me, Abby [Radoha] and Rory have played together since freshman year and we’ve been

2. VanderBrug dominates for Timothy boys Not many basketball players have the all-around game that Connor VanderBrug displayed this winter for Timothy Christian boys basketball. The Trojan senior is 6-foot6 and played all five positions on the floor at different times this season. He averaged 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Despite being

They knocked off Aurora Christian in the regional final, winning on the road, and went one game further to make a Class 2A sectional final. It was as far as any IC team has gone. The team went 23-7 on the season and won IC’s first regional since 2008. Sophomore Rhashaun Epting was the Suburban Christian Gold Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. “We were excited to win the regional and get the monkey off our back after losing the last two by two points each,” coach T.J. Tyrrell said.

The Airborne defeated the Palatine Predators 2120 and the St. Charles Storm 20-19 before topping the Wheaton Thunder 36-24 for the title.
