After the duo won $5,000 for first place at their business plan competition two years ago, they decided to pursue the idea. That’s when Shannon remembered his summers on the river working for Terry Johnson of Elmhurst, an attorney and owner of Chicago Line Cruises. Shannon called up his old boss for advice and soon was meeting with a marketing research firm in Chicago. “As college students we were basically just looking for any resources we had,” said Shannon, explaining the duo made plenty of cold calls to publishers and

During their lengthy application process for “Shark Tank,” Shannon ran into Elmhurst neighbor Jeremy Whitmore, a freshman at York High School, who shot and edited the Packback video entry for “Shark Tank.” “I think the biggest thing that we saw was that as more students started to get aware of what we were doing with Packback, it was really easy to rally support,” 23-year-old Gandham said. Last fall, Packback launched its first pilot program at ISU with just 21 books available in the system. Knowing their catalogue limited how many students could use Packback, the

“We provide a new revenue stream for publishing companies,” Shannon said. Packback signs agreements with publishing companies that allows them to tap into the bargain shopping market. “[Students] are immediately trying to buy the cheapest books possible,” Shannon said. Often, that means buying used textbooks, the profits of which go to the resellers, not the publishers. In turn, Shannon explained, higher education publishers raise prices on new textbooks each year to make up for lost revenue. At the same time, Shannon said professors have so many sources of information today, many times students barely

company added two free services. The website offers a price comparison option for titles not available through Packback as well as one that compares prices retailers are paying for used books. “They’re getting nickels on the dollar back from the bookstore,” said Shannon of the traditional route students take when selling back their textbooks. Now, Packback is live for any student to use with more than 2,000 books available. New titles are added every month. The company targets universities one at a time and has implemented a student ambassador program to market its product. “We do some pretty selective recruiting on campuses,” Shannon said. The ambassador program, which is about 50 large as of now, gives student leaders the opportunity to network with Packback investors and gain management experience leading marketing efforts on campus. While Shark Tank was a highlight of their adventure so far, Gandham said he can’t pick just one defining moment from the entire experience. “A new [highlight] happens probably every week,” Gandham said.

ELMHURST – Mike Shannon grew up in Elmhurst and spent some summers as a deckhand on Chicago Line Cruises. Now he’s trading the Chicago River for ABC’s “Shark Tank.” “It was obviously an intense experience,” Shannon, 24, said of delivering his pitch to the famous sharks, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Shannon and his business partner, Kasey Gandham, who went to Lyons Township High School, co-founded Packback. The company rents digital textbooks for $5 or less a day, benefiting students and publishers. “It was very clear that the issues around the textbook purchasing cycle were underlying issues for every single student,” Shannon said. Both former presidents of their business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi at Illinois State University, Shannon and Gandham teamed up for a business plan competition sponsored by their school. Their plan looked at not only the high cost of textbook purchases for college students, but also the lost profits publishers suffer as a result of the used book market.

ELMHURST – The average Elmhurst resident’s estimated monthly utility bill for water and sewer charges will increase $9.88 a month for usage beginning April 15. The Elmhurst City Council approved a report by the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services Committee recommending a minimum cash balance for the Municipal Utility Fund of 25 percent of annual operating expenses. The council also supports implementing a capital investment recovery charge in place of the existing minimum user charge. The recommendations came after the city hired Baxter and Woodman, an engineering firm, to conduct a comprehensive study of the city’s water and sewer rates, which hadn’t been done since 2003. At 25 percent of annual operating expenses, Elmhurst’s MUF cash balance would be about $5 million. “This cash balance will serve as a reserve for the fund to meet expenses and emergency needs,” 4th Ward Alderman Kevin York said. The minimum cash balance and operating costs will be covered by the current uniform rate method, which charges customers for the metered water and sewer they use. expressed in gallons instead of cubic meters. The committee also took into account water rate increases by the DuPage Water Commission, expected to increase by 85 percent from 2011 to January 2015. A new capital investment recovery charge will be added to the uniform rate method. Instead of a minimum user charge currently paid by 3.4 percent of total Elmhurst customers who use less than 800 gallons per billing cycle, all customers will pay a capital investment recovery charge to recover costs that do not fluctuate with water consumption.
The fixed charge will recover annual debt service costs for capital investments. It will be based on meter size since large meters put a greater demand on the water and sewer systems. The committee report stated users with larger meters should contribute proportionally for the debt service incurred to maintain and upgrade the systems. These upgrades include sewer lining, lift station improvements, water meter upgrades, wastewater treatment plant improvements and water main replacements. “This type of investment may require capital expenditures on the water side of the fund where there have not been expenditures for at least the last 20 years or so,” York said. The Baxter and Woodman report recommends the city continue its $950,000 annual investment in sewer lining and improvements to the wastewater treatment plant. The report highly recommends increas-

ing investment in water main replacement. Elmhurst now spends $900,000 annually on water main replacement. Given 173 miles of water mains, Baxter and Woodman calculated it would take the city 250 years to replace all of them at standard industry costs, but the typical water life of water mains installed after 1945 is about 75 years. Nearly 50 percent of Elmhurst water mains are 60 years or older. The city also experiences up to twice as many water main breaks each year than the national average, according to the report. “As much as I hate to say we’ve got to increase fees to pay for [infrastructure maintenance], we’ve got to pay for it somehow,” 1st Ward Alderman Diane Gutenkauf said. The council is expected to vote on a final amendment to the municipal code of ordinances changing water and sewer rates at the next meeting.

The Elmhurst Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services Committee will review a request to place a referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot asking residents if they support the parking deck and the general obligation bonds needed to fund the project is being considered. “The referendum would give the council a more accurate way to determine public opinion of Elmhurst voters regarding the multi-million dollar parking garage project,” said Andrea Alvarez, a law clerk at the Citizen Advocacy Center in Elmhurst, during the public comments section of Monday’s City Council meeting.

While Elmhurst property tax payers will be obligated to repay the bonds, there are no state limitations as to the rate or amount of general obligation bonds the city can issue. The city also plans to issue general obligation bonds to fund flood mitigation projects in the near future, according to the request.
“When you’re going to spend multiple millions of taxpayer dollars on a clearly controversial project, a referendum would be helpful,” Elmhurst resident Tamara Brenner said during public comment. She added that she did not believe the Zoning and Planning Commission’s decision to support the six-story parking deck project fully considered community input delivered during a public hearing on the issue.

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst City Council approved Monday a report reccommending new parking restrictions for Glenview Avenue. Glenview Avenue north of Third Street does not have sidewalks and ends in a cul de sac directly behind KinderCare on North Avenue. Due to a quick growth in business, about 10 KinderCare employees park on Glenview Avenue to provide space for parents picking up and dropping off their children. The Public Affairs and Safety Committee reccommended the council approve the parking restrictions for 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday on Glenview Avenue. “We’re taking this position, not in any way to harm KinderCare ... but simply because we have no choice but to grant the request,” Committee Vice Chairman and Sec-
ond Ward Alderman Norman Leader said. The report came after residents submitted a petition requesting the parking restrictions. Concerns included street congestion, children having to walk in the street and a lack of resident and guest parking. “The problem is timing,” Leader said. He said he and Second Ward Alderman Bob Dunn have been actively involved in seeking a solution since September. Leader also explained KinderCare is pursuing other parking spaces on adjacent properties and is in the permit process to expand its current parking lot when weather permits. Joe Mukite, vice president of Xanadu Builders, which is retained by KinderCare, asked the council for an extension during the public comment portion of the meeting.

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – In his second run for the state Senate’s 24th District seat, Chris Nybo of Elmhurst is one step closer to victory after winning the Republican primary. “I’ve been on both sides of a race like this,” Nybo said. “Sometimes we’ve won, sometimes we’ve lost.” With about 58 percent of the vote in DuPage County and more than 15,500 votes total, according to preliminary results, Nybo, 36, won against another Elmhurst resident, Dennis Reboletti, who serves as state representatives for Illinois’ 45th District. “Dennis and I are friends and nothing about this changes that,” Nybo said. Nybo lost to Dillard in a 2012 primary election for the state’s 24th District seat. While he believes he benefited from not

having to run against Dillard this time, Nybo also credited his campaign’s positive twist. “We remained optimistic until the very end of our campaign,” Nybo said. When Nybo announced his intent to run in November, he cited Illinois’ pension crisis as his No. 1 priority. While in office, Nybo was the first Republican to sponsor the pension law passed last year. “We need to get our economy back on top,” Nybo said. Nybo has said job creation and economic development are the biggest challenges facing Springfield. Tuesday night he said “without a doubt creating

While 41st District state representative, Nybo worked successfully to pass laws banning Blagojevich-style billboards paid for by taxpayers and expanding the availability of food allergy medicine in schools. “[Reboletti has] had a very distinguished career,” said Nybo of his opponent. Reboletti, 45, of Elmhurst has been a state representative
since 2007 and boasted his experience as an assistant minority leader and floor leader for Illinois House Republicans during his campaign. He also championed his efforts as a former prosecuter to fight the presence of heroin in DuPage County. “His voice will be missed in the General Assembly,” Nybo said. Reboletti also named his negotiating role in passing Illinois’ concealed carry law

ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Police Department is investigating the death of an 18-year-old Elmhurst teen who may have died from a drug overdose. Elmhurst police responded to a possible drug overdose in the 600 block of South Saylor Avenue at 6:05 p.m. March 13. When police arrived, Conner Kelly of the 200 block of Eggleston Avenue was in cardiac arrest and did not exhibit any signs of life, according to a statement released by Police Chief Michael Ruth. Kelly was pronounced dead at 6:45 p.m. at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The victim was taken to the DuPage County Coroner’s Office for examination. An autopsy was performed Friday, but results are not due back for a few weeks, according to the coroner’s office. The incident remains under investigation by the Detective Section of the Elmhurst Police Department.

ELMHURST – The FBI believes the same man who robbed an Elmhurst bank Monday afternoon robbed a Western Springs bank hours later. A man robbed the First Merit Bank, 700 W. North Ave., at 1:14 p.m., said Special Agent Joan Hyde from the FBI Chicago office. She said the man was described as white, about 40 years old, wearing blue jeans, a tan jacket, black sunglasses and a baseball cap. “A weapon was implied, but not displayed,” Elmhurst
Hyde said the man presented a note that implied he had a weapon. The man fled on foot in an unknown direction with an undetermined amount of money, Ruth said. Without having much of a technical background, is there anything pertaining to my plumbing system that I should check periodically as a precaution? Although the majority of the plumbing system within a typical residential home is typically concealed, there are certainly plenty of areas that a novice can quickly assess.
Every faucet, toilet and appliance must have a shut of valve that can easily be turned of in case of an emergency. here should also be a valve that shuts of the main water supply to the home as well as to the water heater. You will want to make sure that the valves all shut completely of before an emergency occurs. Faucets should be easy to operate and free from leakage. Drains in the home should all keep up with the low of the ixture it is serving, without any water backing up.

Toilets should be irmly set in place and not rock or move with any body weight or pressure applied side to side. Flooring around tiles should be irm and not buckled, uneven, or discolored. You will want to check for leakage from the tank to the bowl by dropping a few drops of dye into tank. County deputy sues sheriff By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com A 17-year veteran DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputy has filed a lawsuit against Sheriff John Zaruba, claiming he was denied a transfer because he pushed for more collective bargaining rights and refused to donate to Zaruba’s political campaign. Deputy Peter Coolidge named Zaruba and DuPage
County Sheriff’s Office Chief Al Angus as defendants in the suit he filed in the U.S. District Court – Northern District of Illinois on March 6, according to the court website. Coolidge has been a deputy since September 1996, the suit said, when he started in the Corrections Bureau. He moved to the Patrol Division in 2002, then went back to Corrections in 2008. He believes he was denied
a transfer back to Patrol in 2012 as retaliation for his unwillingness to contribute to Zaruba’s campaign fund and for demanding more collective bargaining rights for Sheriff’s Office employees, according to the suit. The retaliation, which “continues to this day,” violates his constitutional rights, caused him to lose career opportunities and damaged his reputation, the suit said.
DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Paul Darrah declined to discuss the pending litigation. The Sheriff’s Office did not respond to requests for comment. Coolidge’s attorney also opted not to make a statement on the ongoing law suit. The suit follows accusations of similar actions on the part of Zaruba made by seven deputies in November.

Kick up your appetite at Al’s Char-House LA GRANGE – They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and if that’s the case, then Al’s Char-House not only embodies the stereotype, but celebrates it with platters built for a state-size appetite and portions larger than my forearm. Even on a freezing winter’s night, downtown La Grange is its same old self with bustling foot traffic, valet services working nonstop and restaurants keeping up with the demand. Through a set of double doors next to Casa Margarita and down a stairwell, there exists a place in La Grange that could only be described as John Wayne’s subconscious fantasy. Texas and cowboy memorabilia line every wall from the full-service bar area with fire pit to the multiple levels of a packed and hungry house. Walking past the terrific Western-themed decor, including cowboy statues, saddles, badges and photographs, it was hard not to notice the king-size platters being brought to tables. I could hear guests saying to each other with a smile how they’ll have leftovers until [insert days in advance here]. As a result, I refrained from ordering an appetizer, but seeing the onion blossom specialty arrive at several tables close by tempted me in ways you could only imagine. Instead, I resisted and opted for the main course. The menu’s array of different strips of steak and ribs looked mouthwatering, but being a connoisseur of cheeseburgers, I had to go with the Charburger Plus, described by Al’s as its “super burger,” topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion. Again, I have to be honest. Right before going to Al’s, I went to see the new “Hunger Games” movie at the La Grange Theatre, so now eyeing a burger that took up most of my plate made me feel a little guilty. That was before I took the first bite.

The Charburger Plus lives up to its “super burger” billing, and can be on. customized with a variety of toppings. If there ever were a time I “Is it good?” my mom asked. But I couldn’t stop to answer her; I was too busy leaving shame at the door as the juices from the burger dripped down to my fingers and then back into my mouth. My mom could tell what the answer would’ve been as she got started on her Chicken Marsala, two boneless chicken breasts sauteed in wine and
mushrooms. Despite not being able to finish the massive portions, we both enjoyed the leftovers for lunch the next day. Our server was more than friendly, along with the rest of the staff, who twice during our visit got together to sing a happy birthday to guests. I managed to request a brownie sundae for dessert, after loosening my belt and
chose wisely to indulge, it was now, as a brownie materialized covered in whipped cream, chocolate syrup and ice cream. My mom couldn’t eat another bite, but, as I said, shame already had been left at the door, so the spoon and my hand became one until the plate was empty. With its selection of steaks, chicken dinners, kabobs and burgers, Al’s Char-House is a haven for carnivores, but
offers an occasional non-meat dish as an option. For myself though, and much of the packed house in attendance, meat was the weapon of choice, and I would be happy to rearm at the La Grange steakhouse again.

‘He’s one of the best’ By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Connor VanderBrug stood tall in many ways for Timothy Christian this season. Not only did the 6-foot-6 senior play every position at some point during the season, but he was a positive role model for the program and the school. The best story about VanderBrug, one that coach Jack LeGrand was excited to tell, is that he once signed a wristband and gave it to a younger Timothy Christian student. “One thing cool about Timothy basketball being a campus that’s preschool through 12th grade is a lot of times our younger kids look up to the older kids,” LeGrand said. “Connor also looks up to the younger kids. He really is a great role model.” The younger kid, Ben VanderWal, was a big fan of VanderBrug and the team. VanderBrug still was surprised by how much of an impact that little gesture had on VanderWal. “He just loves being in our basketball camp that we run,” VanderBrug said. “He’s a basketball fanatic. He came to every game almost and saw me play as much as possible. His mom would always tell me stories of how [VanderWal would say], ‘Oh my goodness he knows my name.’ It was just cool to give him something to remember me by.” VanderBrug gave the Timothy program plenty to remember. He was the Metro Suburban Conference MVP this season and finished his career with 1,247 points. In his last four regular season games he scored 37, 37, 31 and 38 points. Earlier in his career he was a strong 6-foot-6 interior player. He’s a long way from that now.

This season, VanderBrug could be any of a number different types of players. He could be a passing forward that his teammates would play off of, he could be a shooter that his team would run plays to get open shots for, he could be the primary ballhandler and he could still be the post player. The evolution of his game, which included occasional point guard duties once the team’s starter went down around the New Year, surprised even VanderBrug. “Sophomore year I don’t think [playing point guard] would have crossed my mind,” VanderBrug said. “I actually loved playing point guard. I know at the college level I’m kind of in between guard and big man so I like to have experience playing every role out there and I think that was good for me.” VanderBrug will play at Calvin College, a Division III program in Grand Rapids, Mich., that multiple members of his family have attended. To the surprise of LeGrand, no Division I offers ever came despite his all-around game and size. “He was a problem for people because he’s so versatile,” LeGrand said. “We put him at every position. He stepped up to the challenge. Connor is one of the best players we’ve had. School: Montini Year: Senior Impact: The Broncos’ senior forward nearly averaged a double-double with 17.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Brachmann was also a wide receiver for the football team and used his size and strength as a physical player inside.
School: IC Catholic Year: Senior Impact: Brinkman was IC’s solid senior guard. He averaged 12.8 points per game and 4.8 rebounds. Brinkman was a standout in football and basketball, but his best sport is baseball, which he will be playing in college.
School: Addison Trail Year: Senior Impact: Duling wasn’t much of a factor for the varsity team last year, but showed great improvement. He earned a starting spot and turned that into an all-conference selection. He was all-tournament at the Blazers’ pre-holiday tournament this season and averaged 11 points, 4.0 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.
School: IC Catholic Year: Sophomore Impact: The Suburban Christian Gold player of the year put up big numbers, and the scary part is that he’s only a sophomore. The 6-foot-3 guard averaged 19.2 points per game while pulling in 8.1 rebounds and blocking 28 shots. Colleges will surely start calling for Epting very soon.
School: Glenbard East Year: Senior Impact: The Rams had an uncharacteristically down year, but it wasn’t because of Jaron Hall. The senior guard led the team in scoring and proved to still be a dangerous player. Hall, who was all-conference in the DuPage Valley Conference, is one of the best jump shooters in the area.
School: Willowbrook Year: Senior Impact: The Warriors didn’t have a lot of success on the court, but Poole managed to stand out. The senior guard averaged 9.1 points per game thanks to a good shot and an ability to get open.

School: Addison Trail Year: Senior Impact: The four-year starting point guard was a staple in the program. His scoring ability and ballhandling skills helped earn him an all-conference selection and all-tournament nods at West Chicago and Addison Trail this season. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 51 percent from the floor.
School: York Year: Senior Impact: Roberts was a versatile athlete for the Dukes. The 6-foot-1 guard played longer than his size and was third on a balanced York team in scoring at 8.9 points per game. He will be playing at the next level after receiving a lot of interest from Division III schools.
School: York Year: Senior Impact: Rose was the quarterback of the football team, but the basketball court is where he truly shines. The sharpshooting guard made 39 3-pointers this season while averaging 9.8 points per game. He also led the team with 59 assists
School: York Year: Senior Impact: Toohey was a four-year varsity player and leaves the program with the most career wins in York history. Bound for Air Force, the 6-foot-8 forward scored 14.1 points and grabbed 7.2 rebounds per contest. What’s maybe most impressive is his 80.6 free throw percentage (166-for-206).

We’re really fortunate to have a tremendous senior class, and their leadership since last spring has been great.” The four returning starters, Jason Bowles, Joe Duda, Sebastian Guzman and Evan Wendell, will lead the team, but they should have help from a supporting core fill with varsity returners. Bobby Krissinger and Casey McNamara will take up the middle hitter position. The Warriors have the task of replacing a 12-man senior class that won 52 games in the past two years on varsity. This season, Willowbrook has just one senior joined by 11 juniors on the roster. Outside hitter Ben Wozniak is the team’s lone senior, but is a good one. He had 243 kills, 223 digs, 35 blocks and 17 aces a year ago. Newcomers Ryan Wakely, Anthony Acitelli and Tommy King should play big roles in their first year on varsity. “Our teams expectations this year are to again be competitive in the West Suburban Gold and to continue building on our successes,” coach Ryan Bazon said. This group of players has seen increasing success over the years and we are eager to [continue that] as a team and program.”
Outlook: The still developing Montini program has five returners and nine varsity newcomers, including a staggering six freshmen. Senior Ryan McAuley and junior Matt Vogrin will share setting duties while also getting some time as hitters. Sixfoot junior Jimmy Soukup will be a key contributor at middle hitter. “We are looking to continue to grow ... and get experience for our freshmen to continue to rebuild our boys volleyball program at Montini,” coach Steve Dowjotas said.

What was your preparation for the shootout? We do a lot of shooting during the year with the
team. Once the season was over I got a little shooting in. I didn’t have to do anything different. The cool thing was that the team came out and watched. We had almost the whole team there for my 45 seconds.
Did you have to change your shot at all? It’s a little different. I just keep everything the same. I just try to take my whole shot. You have to go a little quicker. As long as you don’t slow down you’re fine.
Do you have any favorite memories of the season? It was a great senior year. We were really close [as a team]. We all had each others’ backs. It was really cool. There’s not one favorite memory.

ELMHURST – Elmhurst College has named Ron Planz as its new head football coach. Planz becomes the 19th head coach in school history, taking over for Joe Adam, who resigned last month to join the coaching staff at Syracuse. Planz has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach at Minnesota State University, Mankato – an NCAA Division II school. He served as the team’s defensive line coach and special team’s coordinator. He takes over for an Elmhurst team that finished the 2013 season with a 4-6 overall
record and a 3-4 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW). The team is just one season removed from its best-ever campaign in 2012 when the Bluejays won a share of the CCIW championship for the first time since the 1980 season and earned the College’s first-ever trip to the NCAA playoffs. “My family and I are beyond excited to be joining the Elmhurst College community,” Planz said in a release. “This is a great school that cares about the student experience and is committed to being great. This is what has me most excited about being a Bluejay.”
Planz is no stranger to the Elmhurst area or the CCIW after attending nearby Fenton High School and then playing football at Carthage College. Prior to joining the MSU-Mankato coaching staff in 2009, Planz served as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator at Manchester College for five seasons. He also spent three seasons as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He began his coaching career overseas, serving as the defensive coordinator for the Danube Dragons in Klosterneuburg, Austria, in 2002.

EST had 13 female swimmers at the 2014 Speedo Champions Series Seniors Meet held in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., March 13 to 16. Paula Nolte made it to the awards podium by placing eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 2:25.66. Nolte joined Hannah Nolte, Sam Marlott and Molly Kuenstler on the 400 medley relay team that finished ninth with a time of 4:01.82. Other EST swimmers who competed were Winona Asher, Amy Choi, Lauren Frendreis, Molly Hill, Kanah Hori, Melissa Johnston, Meaghan McIntyre, Ailie Orzak and Amalia Siavelis.

Shaw Media and Daily Herald Media Group recently announced the launch of Chicago Football, a print and digital sports media franchise covering high school, college and professional football. Veteran football analyst and Chicago-area sports personality Hub Arkush will spearhead the initiative. The first edition of Chicago Football magazine hits newsstands in early April and will focus on the Chicago Bears’ preparation for the 2014 NFL Draft. The first edition will include exclusive interviews with head coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery. It also will break down the professional prospects of Chicago-area players, including Chris Watt (Glen Ellyn) and others. In print, Chicago Football will be a glossy magazine published weekly during the football season and monthly in the offseason. The publishers also plan to produce several annual football guides to be distributed nationally. The website HubArkush. com is now ChicagoFootball. com. The new site will provide in-depth news and analysis of the Bears, along with extensive information about the NFC North division and coverage of all 32 NFL teams. The
site also will provide analysis of local high school and college programs as the 2014 season approaches. In addition to Arkush, Chicago Football contributors include Shaw Media’s Kevin Fishbain and Tom Musick, and the Daily Herald’s premier Bears expert Bob LeGere and fantasy football analyst John Dietz. Veteran designer and editor Bob Peters – who previously worked with Arkush at Pro Football Weekly – also joined the Chicago Football team. Arkush indicated that he is in the process of hiring additional staff. Chicago Football will be headquartered at the Daily Herald offices in Arlington Heights. Arkush noted the time is right for this venture. “The NFL’s popularity is at an all-time high, and many fans have an affiliation with at least one college and high school program while many follow more than one,” Arkush said. “Chicago Football will be unique in its look at the sport from a geographical perspective, and our singular focus will allow us to go more indepth than other media.” Chicago Football’s NFL Draft Preview edition will be available on newsstands April 7. The magazine can be purchased at area newsstands or included as part of an annual subscription, available at ChicagoFootball.com.

any Americans suffer with problems of obesity. It is estimated that nearly two-thirds of Americans are now overweight and many have given up the struggle to return to a healthy weight. As your weight increases, the chances of losing it seem to slip away. If you lose only a pound here and a pound there, any chance for significant weight loss seems to be out of reach. You get discouraged and stop trying. The risks of obesity and being overweight are many. It is the No. 1 public health problem in America, leading to multiple diseases. Weight-related diseases include hypertension, Type II diabetes, fatty organs, acid reflux, heart disease, shortness of breath, joint pain, lowered immune response, stroke, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and premature death. The costs of medical care for these diseases has skyrocketed to $147 billion for Medicare and Social Security Disability claims in one year. People who are obese spend 42 percent more on medical care, 72 percent more on medications and 48 percent more time in the hospital. That adds up to as much as $10,000 more per year in healthcare costs. The factors that can influence excessive weight gain are different for each person. The trajectory toward obesity can begin as early as 5 or 6 years old when hereditary factors and family lifestyle can contribute to the problem. You can inherit certain genetic predispositions for weight gain. However, in most cases heredity can be overcome with a healthy lifestyle. If the family meals include many calorie-dense foods, you not only gain excessive weight but you are likely to develop unhealthy eating habits as an adult. Family schedules may be arranged around the foods that are fast and easy but also more likely to be unhealthy. If the family eats a lot in restaurants many of the foods tend to be in larger portions and may have too much of the “big three” — fats, sugar and salt — in them. Subsequently the entire family can easily become “biggiesized.” What about your body? It seems to betray you, too. Your taste buds seem to prefer donuts over broccoli. The taste of processed foods also may be engineered to maximize your

be patient and set realistic goals for weight loss. Weight gain did not happen overnight. practice healthy behaviors and weight loss will follow. consumption. It doesn’t help that your body is biologically predisposed to store foods for energy. But in modern life you do not need all of that stored food energy that will be enable you to run 10 miles, chase down an antelope, kill it with your spear and drag it back home. Instead you are more likely to eat a bag of potato chips while you sit on the couch, turn on the TV and watch someone else catch that antelope. Women’s bodies tend to gain more weight with pregnancy but many women gain excessive weight during pregnancy and do not lose it. Hormones
sometimes play a part in increasing susceptibility to weight gain or slower body metabolism. Some medications also contribute to weight gain. Don’t forget that an important part of the weight-loss equation is calorie expenditure. Most Americans spend too much time in sedentary activities. Sitting at work, in a car and finally at home does nothing to burn up calories. Opportunities for walking, running and even moving may be very limited in your daily routine. While it may seem hopeless with all of these obstacles, it is possible to lose weight. It involves a new psychology of self
and food utilization. Successful weight reduction requires increased knowledge and awareness of all of the potential threats to your health and a belief in your power to control your life called self-efficacy. All of the factors that can influence weight gain can be managed if you first become more aware of the subtle and not-so-subtle triggers for relapse. This includes our thoughts, beliefs, emotions and the environment. It requires conscious living or achieving a level of mindfulness about yourself that most of us are not accustomed to practicing. Consider the vision you have of yourself. If you imagine yourself as a healthy person you are more likely to act in ways that are congruent with the way a healthy person acts. You will consciously seek health-enhancing activities and be more aware of the choices you make. Use behavior-modification principles to set up your life for managed eating, such as eating slowly, making a food journal and developing alternative ways to manage feelings. Be patient and set realistic goals for weight loss. Weight gain did not happen overnight. Practice healthy behaviors and weight loss will follow. Be aware of the foods you have around you. Certain foods may look good, taste good and smell good but they create havoc with your organ systems. Remove them from your home and surroundings. Become knowledgeable about foods and read labels. Buy more fruits and vegetables. Eat more rationally and less emotionally. Change your view of food. Food must be viewed as a means for sustenance instead of a way to make yourself temporarily feel good, manage stress, conquer boredom or reduce bad feelings. And don’t forget to move every day. Hop, skip, walk, run, jump or dance. Just get your body to experience enough motion to use up some of that stored food energy. Being a healthy person of normal weight is not convenient. It requires an investment of time, thought and planning. It requires a change in some of the beliefs you have held about yourself for a long time. LEGAL NOTICE / PUBLIC NOTICE ADVERTISEMENT FOR BIDS VILLAGE OF VILLA PARK PROJECT: VAN BUREN STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT This project consists of the reconstruction of Van Buren Street from Ardmore Avenue to Cornell Avenue (approximately 762.5 lineal feet). The scope of work includes the complete removal of pavement, curb and gutter, and driveway aprons. The reconstruction will consist of a proposed hot-mix asphalt pavement, type B-6.12 curb and gutter, Portland cement concrete driveway aprons, and hot-mix asphalt driveway aprons. Below the proposed pavement section will be an undercut of 24" which will be replaced with aggregate subgrade improvement material on top of a geogrid. The storm sewer system will be redesigned and the sanitary main will be replaced. Sanitary and water service lines will also be replaced under the pavement. Valve vaults will be added and fire hydrants will be replaced. PRE-BID MEETING: TUESDAY, APRIL 8, 2014, 10:00 A.M. LOCAL TIME The Pre-Bid Meeting is OPTIONAL and its purpose is to answer any questions or concerns the Contractor may have with the project.
