Elmhurst asks Park District to reconsider stormwater project

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Members of Elmhurst’s City Council expressed disappointment Monday in the Elmhurst Park District Board of Commissioners’ partial approval of stormwater detention projects.

“I’m very frustrated with the park board’s vote last week,” Sixth Ward alderman Michael Honquest said.

The park board voted on two stormwater detention projects proposed by the city and unanimously approved new concepts for both.

“I feel it is a much superior option than what first came to us,” park board President Carolyn Ubriaco at her board’s meeting Oct. 22.

The city submitted project proposals developed by Christopher B. Burke Engineering

that involved storing 23 acrefeet of stormwater in a 100-year storm event – a storm with a 1 percent chance of happening that year – in York Commons Park.

The $3.2 million project was designed to benefit homes on Crescent Avenue, Washington Street, Swain Avenue and Vallette Street. It consisted of two detention ponds, the larger of which was on the east side.

The second proposal was to store 14 acre-feet of stormwater in Golden Meadows Park to benefit homes on Pine Street and Avon Avenue. The project was estimated to cost $3.4 million.

The park board approved a concept that would allow the city to use the west side of York Commons to store 11 acre-feet of stormwater. The board also required that the city construct a basketball

court and two sand volleyball courts in York Commons.

“They came back with 11 acre-feet, which in my opinion is substantially less than what we were asking for, and it’s substantially less that we can do for the citizens of Elmhurst,” Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley said during Monday’s City Council meeting, adding the city’s engineers have not determined if 11-acre feet of storage is possible on the west portion.

The east project was criticized by a group of residents on Cayuga Avenue, which backs up to the park and the eastside proposed detention basin.

The residents argued the city would be bringing stormwater closer to their homes and putting them in danger.

Honquest said a small group of people were making a lot of noise about the York

Commons project, but the majority of Sixth Ward residents want to use the park for detention.

The park board also approved a proposal for Golden Meadows Park that would turn over the west portion of that park to the city to use for detention instead of the east side, which the city planned to use.

City officials met with members of the park board last week following the vote.

“We asked them if they would reconsider and actually have a specific discussion on the east lobe of York Commons,” Morley said.

He said the city plans to submit a letter to the park board explaining the benefits of the additional storage at York Commons and the board agreed to discuss it at a Nov. 19 meeting.

Council welcomes Talluto as 4th Ward alderman

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Elmhurst City Council unanimously confirmed Elmhurst Mayor Steve Morley’s appointment of Noel Talluto to Fourth Ward alderman at its meeting Monday.

“I think Miss Talluto would be a fine addition to the City Council,” Morley said.

Talluto’s appointment comes after former alderman Stephen Hipskind resigned after nearly a decade on the council.

As a board member of Elmhurst’s League of Women Voters, Talluto has attended City Council meetings regularly since 2012, taking notes for the league’s members.

“It was kind of a natural progression for me to take on a new role in serving my community and my neighbors,” Talluto said.

She said she believes there are three issues that are most important to the resi-

dents in her ward, including economic development and flooding.

She also is looking forward to the city completing a strategic plan because she believes it’s important for the city to have an overall vision for the future.

“I believe that those are the issues that have the ability to impact the most number of people in the city and in my ward,” Talluto said.

Talluto has been an Elmhurst resident for four years, and she is actively involved

beyond her role in the League of Women Voters. She also is a Cub Scout den leader and church volunteer at Immaculate Conception Parish.

She and her husband, Marc, have four children: Lucas, 8; Aniella, 6; Colton, 4; and Carter, 1.

“We like the size of the community from the neighborly aspect,” Talluto said about why her family enjoys living in Elmhurst.

Talluto earned her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and she has a master’s degree in general management and brand management from the University of Michigan Ross Business School. She currently works as a senior marketing consultant with Fruition Partners in Chicago.

Talluto’s Fourth Ward position will be up for election

in April, but candidates must file by Dec. 22. As of now, Talluto has not said she will run.

“It is all new to me, but also, at the same time, I knew about that when I applied,” Talluto said.

She’s most looking forward to using her communication skills to inform Fourth Ward residents of city affairs and listen to their concerns.

She and fellow Fourth Ward alderman Kevin York will host a town hall meeting for ward residents at 7 p.m.

When Talluto has free time, she enjoys sailing and playing volleyball. She sees her new role as a way for her to give back to her community, one she said she loves.

“We have a lot of very good, down-to-earth and welcoming people in the community,” Talluto said.

Republican Chris Nybo of Elmhurst will remain the District 24 state senator after claiming victory over Democrat Suzy Glowiak of Western Springs.

“I think the biggest thing that is coming out of our race is DuPage County voters are rejecting the Cullerton cousins,” Nybo said after declaring victory Tuesday night, referring to Democratic state Sens. Tom and John Cullerton, whom he describes as “Chicago-style” politicians.

The Cullertons campaigned with Glowiak, who lost to Nybo with 40 percent of the vote, according to unofficial

election results.

Nybo was appointed to represent the state Senate’s 24th District by his predecessor Kirk Dilliard, Chris Nybo who left the position in August to take a job as chairman of the Regional Transportation Authority.

While a District 41 state representative, Nybo worked successfully to pass laws banning billboards paid for by taxpayers and expanding the availability of food allergy medicine in schools.

Bill 1, aimed at addressing the state’s pension crisis. While the bill is currently under review by the Illinois Supreme Court, Nybo maintains whatever the ruling, the pension crisis is solvable.

“I think Bruce Rauner is just what this state needs,” Nybo said.

Job creation and preventing tax increases were at the forefront of Nybo’s economic

campaign message.

“We’ve got to kill that income tax increase,” Nybo said.

Glowiak is currently in her second term as a village trustee in Western Springs, where she chairs the General Government Committee and serves on the Planning and Zoning Committee.

Glowiak’s economic strategy involved investing in state infrastructure, as well as expanding the tax base by creating a business-friendly environment, decreasing the income tax rate and cutting wasteful spending, according to her responses to a Suburban Life Media candidate questionnaire. She also supported raising the minimum

wage over several years.

She championed the value of education and opposed Senate Bill 16, which would take millions in state funding from public schools in District 24.

Glowiak also wanted to get municipalities and DuPage County more resources to combat flooding in the area, she said in the questionnaire.

Glowiak could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Nybo said he’s excited to get to work to bring more jobs to DuPage County and continue working for DuPage County voters.

“I’m glad that they appreciate the truth and sincere government,” Nybo said.

Incumbent Conroy takes D-46

With 100 percent of DuPage County precincts reporting, the Republican candidate for Illinois House of Representatives District 45 received Christine about 55 per- Winger cent of the vote, compared to Democrat Jenny Burke’s about 45 percent, according to unofficial election results.

The district also includes five precincts in suburban Cook County, where Winger claimed about 52 percent of votes, preliminary results show.

“Illinois is unbalanced,” Winger said Tuesday night.

“Illinois is led by one party right now and that party has failed us for over a decade.

And we need hope.”

Winger said she is excited to get down to business with her peers in the Illinois

General Assembly, as well as Republican Governor-elect Bruce Rauner.

She plans to focus on bringing businesses back to Illinois and tackling pension issues.

“We are failing our people, and we need to turn it around,” Winger said. “And I look forward to doing that.”

Winger previously defeated three other Republican candidates in the spring primary.

The lifelong Illinois resident has served on the Wood Dale City Council for 11 years, earning an appointment to deputy mayor in May 2013, according to her campaign website. She works as a financial adviser.

Burke, a member of the Itasca Public School District 10 Board of Education, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

District 45 is currently represented by Dennis Reboletti, R-Elmhurst, who lost to Chris Nybo in the Republican primary race this spring for Kirk Dillard’s Illinois Senate District 24 seat.

“It’s always been in my nature to serve,” she said.

Incumbent Democrat Deb Conroy will remain in Springfield for an additional two years after winning a close race against Republican challenger Heidi Holan for Illinois’ 46th state representative district in Deb Conroy Tuesday’s general election.

“I’m thrilled,” Conroy said Tuesday. “I believe that I definitely have the best interest of the majority of my district at heart.”

Conroy, who is serving her first term in the General As-

sembly, received about 52 percent of the vote, according to preliminary election results, while Holan received 48 percent.

A Villa Park resident, Conroy said Tuesday she prides herself in acting independently as a legislator and, when campaigning, she cited her participation in bipartisan efforts to streamline DuPage County government bodies and services as ranking high among her accomplishments in office.

NEWS BRIEF Elmhurst to recycle pumpkins Saturday ELMHURST – For the first time ever, Elmhurst will host a pumpkin recycling event.

School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education is partnering with the city to reduce the amount of organic waste sent to landfills, according to a city news release.

Pumpkins must be free of plastic adornments and candles or lights, the release stated.

Participating donors can enter to win a rain barrel donated by the city of Elmhurst. A drawing will be conducted the following week, and the winner will be contacted, according to the release.

CORRECTING UNEVEN VISION MAY REDUCE FALLS Among the many eye conditions that older adults should be aware of is “anisometropia,” which involves eyes that have significantly different refractive power. In fact, one eye may be nearsighted (myopic) while the other is farsighted (hyperopic), or one eye may be significantly stronger than the other. It is also possible that anisometropic individuals may have one eye with a different astigmatism (imperfect curvature of the eye), which leads to blurred vision. These discrepancies make it difficult to produce a single sharp image needed for perceiving depth. As a result, footing becomes less sure. One study involving older adults shows that the prevalence of anisometropia increases after age 65. Regular eye exams can help diagnose the condition and prevent falls.

Elmhurst library event supports book clubs On Sept. 30, Elmhurst Public Library hosted its first Elmhurst book club party. The event at Wilder Mansion drew a crowd of more than 100 local book clubbers to sip wine, win prizes and discuss our favorite topic: books!

Attendees shared their favorite book selections, COMMUNITY including classics like “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte, VOICE memoirs such as “The Glass Julie Castle” by Jeannette Walls Stiegemeyer and “Orange is the New Black” by Piper Kerman, nonfiction favorites like “The Girls of Atomic City” by Denise Kierman and “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand, and many more. Cronin takes second term as chairman County voter turnout

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com The DuPage County Board will be led by a familiar face for the next four years after Chairman Dan Cronin won his second term in a landslide victory in Tuesday’s general election.

Cronin faced challenger and fellow Elmhurst resident Robert Peickert, whom is the chairman of the DuPage County Democratic Party. The incumbent Republican received 65 percent of the vote compared to Peickert’s 35 percent, according to preliminary election results.

“I feel good about it,” Cronin said early Tuesday before the results were in. “I take nothing for granted and take every opponent seriously, but at this stage, I’m optimistic.”

Most notably during his time in office, Cronin has

spearheaded the Accountability, Consolidation and Transparency Initiative, which aims to streamline county government and ser- Dan Cronin vices.

Recently, he helped lead the charge on legislation that allowed the county to create a stormwater utility fee, establish the Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, secure funding for the Career Connect Metro West manufacturing job training program and combat heroin, while maintaining a balanced budget.

Peickert was one of six Democrats petitioned onto the ballot this summer – though only he and Rolland “Rolly” Waller for District 1 survived petition challenges.

At an Oct. 23 candidate fo-

rum organized by the Glen Ellyn and Wheaton chapters of the League of Women Voters, Peickert said he entered the race to generate discussion and new ideas in the county.

Peickert said the county needed to do more with consolidation – including evaluating mosquito abatement districts and the county’s election commission. He also criticized the county’s slow reaction to the heroin crisis and pushed for additional ambitious projects in transportation, infrastructure and business growth.

Neither Peickert nor Cronin were available for comment after poll results were in.

Cronin was elected to his current office in 2010 following nine years in the Illinois General Assembly. He was also formerly the head of the DuPage County Republican Party.

With all precincts reporting, 269,750 out of 587,216 voters participated in the election. The number will increase by about 10,000 when absentee ballots are added, according to Executive Director Robert Saar.

Saar said 47 percent falls below the average range from the past three governors’ races, which he said was between 50.5 and 55 percent. A total of 288,680 out of the 558,929 registered voters participated in the 2010 election, a 51.5 percent turnout.

“Voters just aren’t turning out like they used to,” he said.

“I know that we have more registered voters, but this is a sad trend.”

In March’s primary elections, a record-low 18.9 percent of registered voters cast votes.

Saar said the number of registered voters has increased significantly in the past two decades – up to 85 percent of the eligible population as opposed to 65 percent in the early 90s.

He said when also taking into account the people not registered to vote, about 36 percent of the voting population participated in the election, which he finds “sad” considering everything at stake for the state.

Hinds gets win in county clerk race

By NATHAN LURZ nlurz@shawmedia.com In a DuPage County clerk race filled with allegations, the quieter candidate was the one that came out on top.

Chief Deputy Clerk and Republican Paul Hinds appeared Tuesday night to have cruised to a comfortable victory over Democrat Jean Kaczmarek, 60 percent to 40 percent.

“I think we just came up with a campaign plan that started a year and a half ago with petitions going out,” Hinds said. “We just did the work. It’s always nice when a campaign plan goes according to schedule.”

Hinds has worked in the County Clerk’s office for more than 18 years and is currently the chief deputy to current County Clerk Gary King.

The Villa Park resident ran largely based on that experience and a hope to continue to streamline and modernize the county records.

He said he believed his experience and the Clerk’s Office’s

good reputation were driving factors to the big win.

“The county clerk’s job is an administrative position – I’ve Paul always said that Hinds if we do our jobs correctly, you won’t hear about it in the newspaper,” he said.

“And we’ve always had a great reputation of being very effective. ... I think that translated into people thinking that the County Clerk’s Office is run well and people decided they wanted to keep it going, as I’ve been a big part of that for almost 20 years now.”

Kaczmarek, a community watchdog from Glen Ellyn, hoped to bring an outsider’s view into the office to cut waste and ferret out any cronyism, including reabsorbing the duties of the DuPage County Election Commission into the clerk’s office.

The Democrat filed a complaint with the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office on

Sept. 30 claiming Hinds had inappropriately used county resources for his campaign, including using county employees to circulate and certify his campaign petitions.

Kaczmarek was not immediately available for comment.

Hinds said he was disappointed the race skewed negative from his opponent, saying she “threw out a lot of allegations and never addressed what the county clerk does.”

Hinds will be sworn in Dec. 1 and serve a four-year-term.

He said one of his first priorities on the job will be to digitize more of the Clerk’s Office’s paperwork and put it online.

Filling the shoes of his mentor and campaign manager King will be a challenge he is looking forward to and trained to accomplish, he said, and thanked the voters for the confidence in him.

“Gary’s been clerk since 1986, and this will be the first time we’ve had a change in the Clerk’s Office since then,” he said. “But I’m anxious and ready to go.”

Zaruba wins re-election for sheriff naire, Zaruba said he felt he was the best candidate for sheriff because he has integrity, perseverance, pride, loy- John alty and a sense Zaruba of caring.

“I believe that I possess these traits and have never lost sight or wavered from my position, my oath, or my purpose,” he said.

He said the biggest issue facing the sheriff’s office is the heroin and prescription drug crisis. Zaruba said education, prevention, treatment and law enforcement are all necessary to win that fight. In the pre-election questionnaire, Quiroz said

he hoped to make changes to the structure of the office.

Currently, the correction division and court deputies are paid the same wages as the patrol deputies and detectives, which Quiroz said is “rare” in other offices.

He said he would separate the correction and court security divisions and create a different pay scale to save costs.

The savings would be used to hire new deputies, he said, and existing deputies would not be affected. This, and a reduction in overtime, would save $1.5 to $2 million per year, he said.

“The sheriff’s office, managed correctly, could be an asset to all citizens and law enforcement agencies in the county,” he said.

Fichtner keeps DuPage County Board seat

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com Republican Paul Fichtner of Elmhurst is looking forward to four more years on the DuPage County Board after winning re-election against Democrat Roland “Rolly” Waller of Bensenville.

Fichtner won with nearly 63 percent of the vote against Waller, according to preliminary election results.

Fichtner has been on the DuPage County Board since 2004 and he is the chairman

of the Finance Committee.

“I’m looking forward to working hard for another four years,” FichtPaul Fichtner ner said.

In a Suburban Life Media candidate questionnaire, he boasted county property taxes have not increased in the four years since he was elected.

In his next term, Fichtner plans to double the $2 million in cost savings created by consolidation since last year.

While he served as chairman of the Technology Committee, the county received the Sunshine Review’s Sunny Award recognizing the transparency of the county website.

Fichtner said he thinks his re-election is the culmination of the work he’s put in on several issues during his time on the board, including keeping taxes low.

Waller, a businessman and active community member, ran on his fiscal responsibility and leadership qualities, according to his responses to

the Suburban Life Media questionnaire. He advocated for reducing the noise pollution from O’Hare Airport.

Waller campaigned on his business experience and ability to attract more companies to DuPage County and lower property taxes on residents, according to his questionnaire responses.

He also sees the heroin epidemic in DuPage County as a large issue in need of every resource possible to increase

prevention policies and education, he said in the questionnaire.

Seniors also were a group Waller advocated for in his campaign, promising to encourage members of Congress to protect Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.

Waller could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Fichtner wanted to thank voters for their continued support.

Elmhurst organization supports education in Uganda

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Charlie and Betty Laliberte of Elmhurst have retired from their positions at York High School, but they haven’t given up on educating students.

The couple founded Children UP with the help of friends to sponsor secondary education for children in northern Uganda.

In Uganda, access to education, especially secondary education, is very limited compared to the U.S., Charlie said.

“High school is prohibitively expensive there,” he said.

In Uganda, high school lasts six years and begins after seventh grade. He said it costs about $1,000 a year to put a student through high school, so the organization won’t take on another student until they have at least $7,000 in the bank.

“Very important to us is that we have equal numbers of boys and girls,” said Charlie, explaining girls often have

in 2008 during a trip to Uganda. With support from Children UP, Akumu completed her university degree at Makerere University in Kampala where she studied forestry.

She then worked for several local and international consultancy firms in Uganda and eventually started a forestry business with Global Woods Uganda, before pursuing her

master’s degree in climate change.

“We have found that once a child has succeeded, then they become a support for their extended family,” Charlie said.

Akumu, for example, has supported several family members in their education as a result of her professional success.

“You can’t take education away from somebody,” Betty said.

She and Charlie visit Gulu in northern Uganda for about two weeks each year in late winter.

“We absolutely have fallen in love with the people,” Charlie said of the friends he and his wife have made in Uganda.

The couple is planning to make their annual trip in January, despite frequent questions from friends concerned about Ebola. Laliberte said Uganda is more than 3,000 miles away from the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, so he isn’t too worried.

Next week, Children UP is

hosting its annual fundraiser, which it has expanded this year. Formerly called Art for Kids, Children UP’s Fall Fair will feature craft activities for children and adults, as well as a variety of handcrafted gifts, including scarves, blankets, artwork, greeting cards and Ugandan paper-bead jewelry.

“Part of it is to give us a chance to talk about Children UP with people,” Charlie said, explaining informing others about the cause is important.

All items for sale have been donated, and more than 99 percent of all funds collected go directly to Ugandan students.

Charlie said board members pay out of pocket for printing and postage for promotional materials.

As a former York librarian, Betty said she feels a need to spread education, as many of the Children UP board members do.

“We’re all educators, so it seems like an appropriate gift,” Betty said.

“Think of all the things that have been done to encourage voter turnout, and it goes down,” he said.

Saar said he thinks the state needs to take a serious look at better ways of encouraging voter turnout. He said other states have had more success with tactics such as permanent vote by mail and precinct consolidation.

“It’s so obvious that the stuff that we’re trying has been tried all over the country,” he said. “I don’t know why we would think it would work here.”

Wild Monk elevates gastropub offerings LA GRANGE – When eating out, it is a rare find that strikes the perfect balance between upscale cuisine and casual comfort, but downtown La Grange gastropub Wild Monk does just that.

I recently ventured to the restaurant and bar for dinner on a Friday evening. The dining room, which remained full throughout the night, is minimalist, yet cozy, with a wood floor and booths, metal stools and exposed-bulb light fixtures. Televisions lined the walls, playing baseball and basketball, so no one was missing the game.

We took our time placing our drink orders, perusing the expansive menu, which includes over 30 draft beers and even more bottled brews, as well as an array of signature cocktails and select wines, whiskeys, bourbons and Scotches.

Among the featured breweries are west suburban favorites BuckleDown Brewing of Lyons, Pollyanna Brewing Co. of Lemont, and Two Brothers Brewing Co. of Warrenville.

I opted for a seasonal beer with the Ten Ninety Brewing Co.’s De Ogen pumpkin ale, which was robust, spicy and aromatic. My companion went with BuckleDown’s Amarillo Clencher, which he found to be appealingly hoppy, citrusy and sweet.

We began the meal by sharing one of several available small plates. Wild Monk offers a range of interesting options, including several types of sliders. But from the moment my companion spotted them on the menu, it had to be Brussels sprouts.

Now, Brussels sprouts long have been a source of contention for the two of us – he loves them, I hate them. But at Wild Monk, we shared a rare moment of consensus on the controversial veggie.

They were delicious. Tossed in bacon jam, lemon and sea salt, they were savory, sweet and just sprouty enough.

It was creamy and hearty – the kind of sandwich you could happily eat as a latenight snack or for breakfast the next morning. A side of Cajun fries added a seasoned

kick to the plate.

For his entree, my dining companion selected the fried chicken tacos with spicy slaw, micro cilantro and chipotle aioli, which he described as light, moist and flavorful. As his side order, the plantain chips were fresh and hot, with a satisfying crunch.

Before we departed, he tried one more enticing draft beer – Pollyanna’s Dr. Pan-

gloss, which somehow pulls off the delightfully bizarre combination of being both hoppy and malty.

If you are a beer snob, Wild Monk will no doubt rise to your standards. If you aren’t a beer snob, fear not – Wild Monk may know beer, but it also knows how to create an environment everyone can enjoy.

For the Wildcats, it was just two years ago that the one-time doormat of the Big Ten put together a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten, 10-3 overall, and won its first bowl game in 64 years and just the second in its history.

Things have gotten so bad in Ann Arbor that Athletic Director David Brandon was forced to resign just 10 days before the Northwestern game, and Hoke is considered a real long shot to return for another season.

While the expectations for the Northwestern football program are nowhere near those of Michigan, that Gator Bowl victory was supposed to signal a new era for the Wildcats, the first of many bowl victories to come and the possibility of someday even playing in a Big

Ten title game.

Northwestern followed its 2012 breakout campaign with a 5-7 record in 2013, which included a 1-7 record in the Big Ten. The Wildcats are 3-5 this season, including 2-3 in the Big Ten following a 2-0 start to the campaign that included a 20-14 upset over 17th-ranked Wisconsin.

While Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s job is in nowhere near the jeopardy of Hoke’s – the advantage I guess of Northwestern football’s less lofty expectations – to say his star has fallen a bit is an understatement.

Just a season ago, Fitzgerald was one of the hottest names in college football coaching circles, rumored for the Texas job and almost every other major program gig that opened up.

Ironically, Fitzgerald was heavily rumored for the Michigan job before both the Rodriguez and Hoke hirings.

He was reportedly within a whisker of taking the Michigan job before Hoke was hired, when Northwestern stepped up with one of those “lifetime” coaching contracts every college coach covets.

Not coincidentally, I am a Michigan alumnus, and our senior Bears beat reporter, Kevin Fishbain, studied at

Northwestern. Neither of us are very happy these days, but we are forever loyal.

And therein lies the beauty of both the college and high school games, with one of the very few football assets the NFL cannot match.

These two Big Ten programs will be back. There is glory in their futures. How soon I cannot say, but it will happen, and the alumni will always be there when it does.

They are a significant part of their alumni’s lives, as are the teams of the high schools we attended and played on.

Your favorite NFL team is an attachment, at times inseparable or so it seems, but at the end of the day, they are a choice.

The schools you gave four or more years of your lives to, they and their teams are a part of who you are, the highs are that much higher and the lows that much more depressing.

Both Northwestern and Michigan alumni deserve better than what they’ve been given lately. Hopefully, the outcome of Saturday’s game is the beginning of something really good for one side or the other.

With the Cubs’ hiring of Joe Maddon dominating the sports pages, Bears-Packers week in the NFL and the IHSA state football championships moving into the second round, the biggest story in college football in Chicago was the once-mighty Michigan Wolverines visiting the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday.

Just a couple of seasons ago, this matchup would have signaled a unique opportunity for the up-and-coming Wildcats to make a statement against one of the most powerful college football programs in the country.

But on Saturday, it was a clash between two programs heading in the same direction, most definitely the wrong direction.

Everyone who loves the game knows about Michigan football, the winningest program in the history of college football.

As recently as three seasons ago, the Wolverines were 6-2 in the Big Ten, 11 -2 overall and playing in a BCS bowl game under first-year Michigan head coach Brady Hoke, a “Michigan man” tabbed to come in and clean up the disappointment of the three-year reign of Rich Rodriguez, “the outsider” and controversial

Preuss paces York volleyball’s playoff run

York’s Alex Preuss hits the ball Oct. 21 in a match against Willowbrook. Preuss has sparked the Dukes’ offense during an extended playoff run that included the program’s first regional title since 2011.

CHICAGO – Everyone in the gym knows where York setter Sarah Rose is going most of the time, but teams have still struggled to stop powerful outside hitter Alex Preuss this fall.

Preuss, a junior, has turned into the go-to hitter and then some for the Dukes, leading York to its first regional title since 2011. In Tuesday’s sectional semifinal at De La Salle, Preuss had 19 kills, in just two games, to lead York to a 25-20, 25-16 victory against Glenbard East.

That awe-inspiring performance brought her season total for kills to 452. Despite her big numbers, some big colleges are still hesitant to recruit the 5-foot-9 junior.

“She’s having some people look at her, but people look at how tall she is and they don’t realize she’s playing a big girl’s game,” coach Patty Iverson said. “She’s playing way above the net.”

York played sectional host De La Salle, the top sectional seed, in the final Thursday. The Meteors brought a big crowd, creating a pressure-packed environment.

Playing in front of big crowds and having the pressure of carrying the team’s attack isn’t something that bothers Preuss.

“Most people don’t like the pressure, but I actually like it a lot,” Preuss said. “It urges me to play harder, which is definitely what I need.”

Ally Mann had six kills against the Rams and Rose totaled 29 assists, showing the Dukes have plenty of talent in addition to Preuss and a bright future beyond this season.

Rose, a sophomore, and Mann, a junior, are two key players on a young York roster. The Dukes also called up freshmen Julia Zerdin and Alex Danciutiu this season while only having two seniors on the roster, so the future appears very bright for the program.

‘Something special’ about TC soccer season

The Trojans made it to the Class 1A state final, but lost 2-0 to Columbia on Saturday at the Corn Crib in Normal.

The day before, Timothy got past Harvard in a semifinal in a penalty kick shootout, which was TC’s second straight playoff game to go to a shootout.

The Trojans ousted Harvard 10-9 after 10 rounds of penalty kicks. All 10 Timothy Christian penalty kick takers converted to help the Trojans to advance.

“It was a great experience for the kids,” coach Joe Grit said. “It’s something they’ll never forget. Ultimately they came up a little short, but in time I think they’ll realize they accomplished something pretty special.”

Senior Tyler Vlasak scored a first half goal in the semifinal for his 27th goal of the season. Vlasak, who also had 16 assists, was a two-year captain along with fellow senior Andrew Wieringa.

Those two were among a small, but essential group of starting seniors for the Trojans this season.

“Tyler and all the seniors are going to be hard to replace,” Grit said. “He’s second all-time in goals and second all-time in assists. Soccer is

a team game so we will have guys step up, but he’s going to be hard to replace.”

Vlasak and freshman Jimmy Allen teamed up at forward and showed a chemistry made it seem like they had been playing together for years. Allen totaled 21 goals this fall.

“That’s the first time in school history we’ve had two 20-plus goal scorers,” Grit said.

“It looked like they’ve been playing together for years. It was a great opportunity for Jimmy to learn from Tyler.”

Allen is a part of a young group of players that will lead the Trojans next season. Sophomore midfielder Josh Anderson had 14 goals and 16 assists.

Freshman midfielder Michael Martens contributed seven goals and seven assists.

“The nicest thing was they didn’t let their age affect them,” Grit said. “If you look at our roster, we were young.

We had two freshmen up and started only four seniors. They never showed their nerves.”

ADDISON – Defense was the name of the game Saturday and Addison Trail had plenty of it.

The Blazers beat Lake Zurich 7-3 in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs with a dominant defensive performance. AT (9-1) advances to face Libertyville on the road in the second round. It was the first playoff victory for Addison Trail since 2004.

“We just did everything we could,” AT junior linebacker Zach Atiyeh said. “We knew they’re a 5-4 team and we’re 8-1, but the thing is they’ve been to state four out of the past eight years. We can’t overlook any opponent. We just came out and took it to them.”

The Bears (5-5) didn’t get a first down until the second quarter. Once their run-heavy offense got inside the AT 10-yard-line, the drive stalled and resulted in a missed field goal. Lake Zurich missed another field goal in the second quarter and the game went into halftime still scoreless.

In the third quarter, AT junior quarterback Ryan Zigowicz completed a pair of big passes to Jake Atiyeh and Jaavion Bradley to get the Blazer offense moving. Malik Pierre-Louis later ran in for a 7-yard score to break the ice.

Zigowicz, who was making just his second start in place of injured starter Mike Rybarczyk, was 6-for-10 for 71 yards.

His passing complemented the play of running backs Mike Hundley and Pierre-Louis.

“We came into the game knowing we were going to run the ball, pound it down their throats,” Zigowicz said. “All around we played great. The line played a great game the whole time, gave me time to throw and step up. Our running backs were going. Our defense was incredible, only three points. That’s unbelievable.”
