Runners help to reach goal By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Runners have a reputation as a closeknit community, but recently Elmhurst runners banded together to help a Washington, Ill., woman reach her goal. “We just wanted to support her,” Elmhurst podiatrist Misty McNeill said. Sarah Earl, a mother of three, set a goal to run 13 half marathons in 2013. Saturday she ran the Mattoon Santa Chase, her 12th half marathon this year. Misty McNeill saw a Facebook post through a mutual friend of Earl’s and McNeill’s, Andy Querio, looking to help Earl after the recent EF-4 tornado destroyed her home. Andrew Phillips, who works at Fleet Feet Sports Elmhurst, also saw the Facebook post and told his boss Jason Wells. “It was a pretty easy decision,” Wells said. The store donated a pair of shoes, a running shirt and

some socks to the runner in need. Wells realized reaching her 13 half marathon goal was more than likely not Earl’s first priority following the tornado, but he wanted to help his fellow runner. “This was a very special and challenging and personal goal for me,” Earl said. She didn’t want the tragedy of the tornado to take away her running goal as well. She also knew half marathons are sparse in December, and if she skipped the Santa Chase her goal might be lost. “It was awesome because I’m a runner, and I could imagine what it would be like to have that type of goal and be so close to completing it,” Wells said. The Runner’s Soul also donated a full running outfit to Earl, and shortly what began as a message to a dozen friends spread. “By Thursday it blossomed bigger than my car

ELMHURST – Two days after an EF-4 tornado ripped through Washington, Ill., Tom Janito found the photo of a girl on the street near Clara Place and Schiller Street in Elmhurst. “It didn’t have anything written on the back,” said Janito, the Elmhurst utility inspector and utility locator. He had no idea who the photo might belong to, but then he heard about the Facebook page titled,“Found items from the Washington Illinois and Diamond Illinois Tornadoes.” Janito thought it was a long shot, but uploaded the photo to the page anyway. More than 1,500 people have

the girl was his sister. “Oddly enough I had a resident bring [a photo] in on Friday that I posted, and it belonged to the same person,” said Janito. The second photo was of Jacob Williams’ father, Curt, dancing with a woman, possibly at a wedding. Janito was able to contact Williams and plans to mail the photos back to him. “Their home was completely destroyed,” Janito said after talking to Williams. Janito said he’s still on the lookout for photos or other items that may have blown into town. If anyone else finds items, Janito is willing to post them on the Facebook page. Found items can be dropped off at City Hall to Tom Janito’s attention.

ELMHURST – The Development, Planing and Zoning Committee discussed Monday integrating the city’s current anti-monotony policy into the building code in light of Elmhurst Memorial Hospital selling its Berteau Avenue campus. “There’s no real threat,” said DPZ Chairman and Fifth Ward Alderman Scott Levin about a developer building identical homes on the residential-zoned property. “From my perspective, a big developer is not going to want to design something that is too identical because he’s got to sell his neighborhood,” Elmhurst Building Commissioner Bruce Dubiel said. one developer that is “a real contender” for the property wants to involve the city with land swapping, which would result in a public-private partnership. If such a partnership did occur, the city would have more influence than that allowed by the anti-monotony policy. The city would get to review the developers’ entire plan. Assistant City Manger Mike Kopp said the process for parceling the land before sale has already been addressed, but he mentioned another possibility. “Some of the developers that I know put bids in were talking about possibly selling off lots,” Assistant City Manager Mike Kopp said. The DPZ Committee plans to discuss the anti-monotony policy again at its next meeting Dec. 9 and ask the city attorney for guidance as how to best incorporate it.

Earl expressed her gratitude to the retailers and runners of Elmhurst. Her last half marathon of the year is Dec. 15 in Indianapolis. “The outpouring of support from the Elmhurst running community has been amazing,” McNeill said.

building department to consider when issuing permits to prevent identical homes from being built next to or too close to each other. “It’s more of an insurance policy, I would say,” Levin said. He explained that while the city hasn’t had much trouble enforcing the anti-monotony policy for the past decade since it was established, a larger nonlocal developer may be less agreeable. Levin would like to integrate the policy into an ordinance that would have legal backing. DPZ Committee member Mark Mulliner wants to make sure the city is not legislating architects’ ability to be creative. “I want to make sure we’ve got that flexibility,” Mulliner said. “I don’t want us to get into a legalistic battle.” Dubiel mentioned that

Car crashes into Elmhurst house By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Elmhurst Police arrested a 17-year-old York High School student after he drove into a house in the 100 block of South Linden Avenue on Tuesday night, according to Chief of Police Michael Ruth. At 11:57 p.m., police responded to a call for a car that had struck a house. Upon arrival they discovered severe damage to the home and the remnant of a front bumper from a Volvo

with a license plate in the street. “Thank God no one was hurt,” said Larry Norton, who lives in the home with his son, his fiancée and her mother. Norton and his family were planning on having Thanksgiving dinner at their home Thursday, but the vehicle destroyed their dinning room table when it drove into the living room. “We heard this boom and it kind of shook the whole house,” Norton said. Norton said his son was

almost hit when he ran toward the car, while the driver pulled out and drove away, leaving his bumper and other car parts behind. “We have tire marks inside the living room by the stairs,” said Norton, who has lived in the house for about 25 years. Nearly the entire car was inside the house, Norton said. The house has since been boarded up, but Norton is waiting for an insurance agent before cleanup begins.

City Council to vote on two tax issues By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The City Council is expected to vote Monday on two financial issues the Finance, Council Affairs and Administrative Services (FCAAS) Committee brought to the council’s last meeting. The first is a 60 percent sales tax rebate for Ed Napelton’s Kia dealership, which caused some disagreement among aldermen. The Kia franchise requested a sales tax rebate incentive from the city for a manufacturer-required renovation project estimated to cost more than $1.5 million. Th agreement would pay Napelton Group annually based on each year’s calculated sales tax rebate for 10 years up to $750,000. During those 10 years, Napelton could not cease the operation of either the company’s Kia or Acura dealerships

in Elmhurst except in the event of manufacturer bankruptcy. Two amendments to change the sales tax incentive to 50 percent and the maximum payout to $600,000 failed at the last council meeting. The council approved the report with three aldermen opposed.

Property tax levy The council is also expected to vote on a more than $9 million proposed property tax levy. The 8 percent tax increase for the 2013 levy would cost the average $295,000 Elmhurst home an additional $23 in taxes next year. The Elmhurst Public Library’s portion of the tax levy will increase an additional 4.9 percent, costing the average home another $3.98. The general fund portion of the proposed 2013 tax levy is

It was Mark Dyer’s 11th deployment as a member of ShelterBox, a RotaryClub disaster relief charity, but this one was unique. The Elmhurst resident was on the island of Bohol in the Philippines providing emergency relief after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake devastated the region. That’s when Super Typhoon Haiyan struck. Fortunately, Dyer was able to help advise residents to take shelter. Congratulations to Boy Scout Brian Schiff of Elmhurst, who completed his Eagle Scout project by making improvements at his church. The 14-year-old from Troop 17 raised money and assembled a team to make repairs to a pair of garages at Immanuel Lutheran Church and School. Keep up the good work.

ELMHURST – For about two decades, the Elmhurst Elks Lodge No. 1531 has been assembling Thanksgiving dinners for families who otherwise might not have one. “I try to be as generous with all of them as I can,” said Michael Baren, the lodge’s Thanksgiving Dinner Chairman. “I’d rather give five churches 30 or 35 meals each, than one church 161 meals.” They aren’t turkey TV dinners either. Each Thanksgiving Dinner box includes a frozen turkey, a fresh pumpkin pie, stuffing, jellied cranberries, mixed vegetables, white potatoes, sweet potatoes and dinner rolls. “They didn’t skimp one penny on what they did, and we really appreciate it,” said Carol Montgomery Fate, Outreach Coordinator at First Church of Lombard where 35 of the Elks dinners went. He estimates that if each

The Elks receive thank you letters but rarely meet the people they’re serving since the meals are distributed first to churches. “I don’t really need to know who it goes to,” Baren said, explaining the families have a relationship with the churches or community centers where the meals are distributed. The Saturday before Thanksgiving, the Elks pick up the refrigerated items early in the morning. Then about 75 volunteers from churches, the Villa Park, Lombard and Elmhurst police departments, students and Elks members gather in the lodge to execute an efficient packing process that’s been refined over the years. “We have great need within this community,” said Pam Stefik, the Immaculate Conception director of Christian ministry. Immaculate Conception

Parish received food for 30 dinners from the Elks, but they used that food to supplement donations they collect from their parish, Visitation Parish and Journey Church to create 120 baskets. Those baskets were then distributed to people on lists at the Immaculate Conception Food Pantry, Greencastle senior low-income housing and Catholic Charities. “We always put more food in the basket,” said Stefik. “It’s not just a Thanksgiving meal. It’s food that will last them for a few days after.” The First Church of Lombard also used the 35 meals from the Elks to supplement the holiday meals they distribute from The Outreach House. “Basically, the Elks have allowed us to double what we give out,” said Montgomery Fate. Baren hopes that even though the Elks can’t supply everyone with a Thanksgiving dinner who needs one, that by making the effort, others might feel inspired to help. “I think what it does is, it raises awareness of what’s going on,” Baren said.

Her primary career and highest priority was raising her family, but Nancy also pursued a variety of positions, including elementary school teacher, bookkeeper, visitors' center representative, and several bank customer service positions. Among her many interests and talents, Nancy was renowned for her craft projects, from making candles to creating pinecone wreaths to reupholstering furniture. She also singlehandedly repainted the interiors of all her new homes and was a superb landscaper. Nancy would keep up with the ins and outs of the financial markets, the latest recipes, and TV shows ranging from “Law & Order” to anything on the History Channel. She also was a master entertainer, renowned for her generosity and thoughtfulness. Gracious and ever interested in others, Nancy always put people at ease and enjoyed discussing everything from news, culture, food, and most of all family. Scarletti’s: Cozy atmosphere, comfort food DOWNERS GROVE – With its quaint setting and madefrom-scratch fare, Scarletti’s Italian Kitchen is a great escape, whether it be from wintry temps, a stressful workday or the craze of holiday shopping. A colleague and I headed out to the downtown Downers Grove restaurant on a recent weeknight. Once we stepped into the cozy restaurant, any leftover frustration from the rush hour traffic and chilly weather was replaced with ease from the warmly lit atmosphere and tasty scents wafting from Scarletti’s kitchen. The attractive dining room makes for an intimate setting, whether you’re with a significant other, family, friends or a business partner, and overlooks the city right along Main Street with large windows. Once seated, we soon were greeted with Scarletti’s customary basket of bread and marinara dipping sauce. It was a nice change-up from the standard bread-and-oil setups at most Italian restaurants, and nearly made for an appetizer on its own. Still, we had to try the bruschetta appetizer, which proved a good call with its combination of fresh tomato and basil, prepared with a balsamic drizzle for added style and flavor points. For our main courses, my colleague, in the mood for a hearty, home-cooked meal, opted for the Chianti Braised Short Ribs, an interesting selection he was very happy with. The boneless short ribs are slathered in a red wine reduction sauce, served on a bed of whipped potatoes and topped with a seasonal vegetable puree. I went with a classic that’s a must-try for me whenever I dine at an Italian restaurant that’s new to me: the Chicken Parmesan. The entree had very generous portions of chicken breast and a side of pasta. The chicken was tender and its marinara sauce proved a perfect complement. If you’re partial

ELMHURST – How do you replace a star point guard like David Cohn? You don’t. At least that’s what York coach Vince Doran is saying. “It’s real easy: David is not replaceable,” Doran said. “I’d be foolish to try to even mention any of our guys in the same breath as him. We don’t have anyone like that. I told our kids right away we’re going to be a different team. We’re not a one-man show. In some ways we’re going to be harder to guard.” Doran hopes his team will be more unpredictable as opposed to last year, when defenses focused on shutting down Cohn as much as possible. Despite the departure of Cohn, York brings back three starters led by Air Force-recruit Frank Toohey. The 6-foot-8 post player will give the Dukes an elite player on the inside, and he will be the focus after fellow 6-foot-8 forward Justin Kurash graduated. In addition to Toohey, sharpshooter Charlie Rose could become a big part of the offense. Fellow senior guards Jack Heinle and Stanley Roberts are also expected to log heavy minutes. “We have a nice group coming back,” Doran said. “We lost a lot with David and Justin, but those other kids have good varsity experience.” Rose, Roberts and Heinle are all wings, meaning none will take over for Cohn at point guard. Can Bears’ defense stop Adrian Peterson? Hub Arkush

For the most part, things have not gone well for the Minnesota Vikings since the Bears last saw them in Soldier Field the second week of the season. But after all kinds of turmoil at the quarterback position because of injury and the surprising signing of Josh Freeman, who then failed miserably in his one start before suffering a concussion, the Vikings look an awful lot like the club the Bears barely got by in Week 2 with their 31-30 victory on a last-minute touchdown pass from Jay Cutler to Martellus Bennett. Christian Ponder appears to be firmly re-entrenched as the starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson will be coming off one of his best games of the season in Green Bay, where the Vikings played the Packers

to a tie in overtime. Most of the biggest questions in this matchup will be about the Bears’ mindset after the egg they laid in St. Louis on Sunday, and whether they have any hope at all of slowing Peterson with the worst run defense in the NFL. Peterson rushed for 146 yards on 32 carries and a touchdown in five quarters of football, and while he hasn’t approached his 2012 heroics, he was still the NFL’s second-leading rusher before the Redskins-49ers game Monday night with 997 total yards, a 4.4 average and 10 touchdowns. Ponder has been a threat on the ground with 34 scrambles for 151 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s completing 64.5 percent of his passes for a 78.7 passer rating, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions. While his passing numbers on the season don’t scare you, he did complete 21 of 30 throws for 233 yards and a 103.9 passer rating Sunday at Lambeau. Greg Jennings and Jerome Simpson have been up and down, but are

reliable targets for Ponder when the Vikings are playing well. Cordarrelle Patterson is a factor in the kick return game, but is still struggling to find himself as a receiver. On defense, the Vikings have struggled all year. They are 30th in total defense, 14th versus the run but 29th against the pass. They are 23rd in interception percentage and 26th rushing the quarterback. On the defensive line, Jared Allen and Kevin Williams are former all pros who are both still capable of having big games, but don’t do it on a regular basis any more. LeTroy Guion and Brian Robison still are starting as well, and this is the unit that helped key the Vikings playoff run in 2012, but they have all struggled this year. Chad Greenway is still the guy you have to identify on Minnesota’s defense, and he’ll make plays all over the field, but Erin Henderson in the middle and Marvin Mitchell on the weak side are guys the Bears should be able to exploit. Josh Robinson and Chris Cook are

third- and second-round draft picks, respectively, on the corners who are both athletic and fast enough but terribly inconsistent, which is why this team is 29th in pass defense. The safeties, Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo, aren’t bad forcing the run, but do struggle in coverage. At the end of the day for the Bears, this one comes down to what are they going to do about Peterson? After going off for a 140 on the ground week nine against the Cowboys, Peterson had been held in check by the Redskins and Seahawks before exploding again in Green Bay. The unfortunate fact is if the Vikings climb on Peterson’s back, there is little the Bears will be able to do but get into a shootout. The good news is that Josh McCown continues to flourish in Marc Trestman’s offense, and the Bears have a lot more weapons on offense than Minnesota, giving them an excellent chance to prevail by piling up points, which is exactly what happened the last time they got together.

Raiders at Cowboys, 3:30 p.m. The late-afternoon game should be a bonanza for Tony Romo and Dez Bryant. The Raiders’ defense ranks No. 8 against the run, but a dismal No. 25 versus the pass. It would be a surprise if Romo didn’t crest 300 yards and throw at least two touchdown passes, probably more. Jason Witten also is a must start. Terrance Williams has disappeared, and

all other Cowboys’ receivers would seem to be afterthoughts at this point. Although the Raiders are respectable against the run – sticking with the idea that this will be a shootout – start DeMarco Murray and Dan Bailey. The Cowboys actually have the weaker defense in this contest, ranking last in points and passing yards. Assuming Darren McFadden will be in street clothes, Rashard Jennings is a great play. If Denarius Moore returns, he is a solid play. If not, take a close look at Rod Streater.

Steelers at Ravens, 7:30 p.m. Two good, but not great, defenses face off in the night game. Ben Roethlisberger has averaged 22 fantasy points over the past four weeks. He has been up and down, however. He might be looking at something around 15 points this week. The Steelers still drive fantasy owners crazy

with their running-back rotation, but Le’Veon Bell is clearly the best option. This week, he’s probably looking at 10 to 14 points. Antonio Brown is a top-five fantasy receiver and an obvious play. After Brown, it gets dicey. Jerricho Cotchery had emerged during weeks 9-11, but he went without a reception against the Browns. After lighting up the Bears in week 11, Ray Rice reverted to his 2013 form against the Jets (16 carries for 30 yards). Although the Jets are stout against the run, it’s time to look at Rice as a No. 3 fantasy back or flex option. In smaller leagues, he’s probably not worth a roster spot. After kicker Justin Tucker and receiver Torrey Smith, the Ravens do not offer much in this game. Given his recent production, it’s hard to recommend Joe Flacco. Call it a gut instinct: He scores 20-plus points against Pittsburgh.

The bye weeks are over, but week 13 presents a new challenge for fantasy owners: Three Thursday games. Ah, Thanksgiving! Nothing beats spending time with loved ones, enjoying a fine feast … and getting a jump on your fantasy opponent! I’m not suggesting that Aunt Mildred’s discussions aren’t riveting, but it’s always fun to have players going on Thanksgiving. A closer look at Thursday’s games will help you determine which players can help your team and those who are likely to be … turkeys (ouch).

question, of course, is whether Aaron Rodgers will play. As of Monday morning, his status was uncertain. Matt Flynn came to the rescue last week against Minnesota, taking over for a struggling Scott Tolzien. Obviously, the Packers are a stronger play if it’s Rodgers, but either quarterback should produce. Flynn seemed to have a connection with Jarrett Boykin, who hauled in five receptions and a touchdown in the second half. The Lions’ defense is ranked No. 28 against the pass. Boykin, James Jones and Jordy Nelson are solid starts. Kicker Mason Crosby also is in for a good day. It might be tougher for Eddie Lacy – Detroit is No. 4 against the run – but we still like the talented rookie this week. The Lions are among the league’s dumbest teams. They also are one of the most talented. Calvin Johnson is an obvious start and Matthew

Year in the conference. Replacing Carr’s production will be difficult, but the Knights have quality players in place. Leading the way are two all-conference returners, Clark Brinkman and Rhashaun Epting. Epting, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, showed just how much potential he had last season and will be looking to take the next step this season. Three senior guards will run the offense. Anthony Taylor is a lockdown defender that will head up the Knights’ full-court press when they choose to use it. Sean Sutton started last year and Ross Fleming was a regular off the bench. As for younger players on the roster, 6-foot-3 sophomore Will Lyles will play inside. Freshman Jordan Rowell, who played on the varsity football team as a running back, is a 6-foot-2 forward with good athleticism. Sophomore Troy Burrows also figures to be in the mix at guard. In addition to aiming for a third straight conference title, in the final year before the Knights join the Metro Suburban Conference, IC also has a couple new teams on the schedule. Most notably, York will host IC on Jan. 11 in a rare battle between the two Elmhurst schools.

Westerberg up for top D-III football award SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Augustana senior middle linebacker Erik Westerberg (York High School) is one of 10 finalists for the 2013 Gagliardi Trophy, the top individual honor awarded Erik in NCAA Division III foot- Westerberg ball. Jostens, Inc. and the J-Club of Saint

John’s University announced the 10 finalists Tuesday and the winner will be announced Wednesday, Dec. 18. Westerberg, already a twotime Capital One Academic All-American and a National Football Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship winner, was the Vikings’ leading tackler for the third straight year this season. He recorded 78 total tackles, 61 solo stops and 10.5 tackles for loss – all team bests. He ranked 18th in the nation with an average

of 6.8 solo tackles per game. He was third in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin with an average of 8.5 total tackles in six league games and earned second team All-CCIW recognition. Last fall as a junior, Westerberg was the CCIW’s Defensive Player of the Year. He led the conference in tackles for the second year in a row and finished 14th nationally in both solo (66) and total (118) stops. He was a third team All-America pick by D3foot-

ball.com. His sophomore season, he recorded 106 tackles with 72 solo stops, and was a second team all-region selection by D3football.com. Westerberg was a first team All-CCIW pick as both a sophomore and junior. With the Gagliardi nomination, Westerberg is now in the running for two of college football’s most prestigious awards. In winning the NFF postgraduate scholarship, he became a finalist for the William V. Campbell

Trophy, which recognizes the best football-playing scholar-athlete in the nation. Westerberg, who sports a 3.85 grade point average, is one of just two Campbell finalists from the NCAA Division III level. The Gagliardi Trophy was first presented in 1993 and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics and community service.

Willowbrook junior Kelly McNamara represented the Addison Trail/Willowbrook co-op at the state swim meet last weekend. McNamara, who has been swimming since she was six years old, was second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.11 seconds. She made her third appearance at state and improved on finishing sixth last year. McNamara, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, spoke with sports reporter Dan Santaromita about taking a medal home from the state meet. What was your reaction when you touched the wall in second place? During prelims I was seeded second so it was kind of nice to see that I stayed where I was. Were you surprised when you were second in the prelims? I didn’t expect it. I was really excited when I saw it on the board.

What was your expectation heading into state? Last year I got sixth so I just wanted to do better than that. What’s it like to swim at state in that wild atmosphere? It’s so crazy, especially at finals. It’s different than any other meet I’ve been to. The girl who finished ahead of you was a senior. Is it your goal to win next year? I haven’t really thought about it, but it would be nice to win. Are you still working out or do you now have some off time? I’ve gotten the past couple days off, but I’m starting again. It’s nice to eat what you want and sleep in. Is it tough to maintain the dedicated workout schedule? It’s hard. We have morning practices and practices after school. It’s a long season.

None of the entries advanced to Saturday’s finals. Senior Hannah Nolte closed out her swimming career with a 43rd place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and was a part of both relays. The 200 freestyle relay of Nolte, junior Jessica Woolfe, senior Perri Brinkmeier and sophomore Maggie Schlecht was 33rd. The 200 medley relay team of Nolte, sophomore Paula Nolte, junior Sam Marlott and Woolfe also was 33rd. Paula Nolte was the top individual finisher for York, taking 34th

in the 100 breaststroke. Woolfe was 44th in the 50 free.

GIRLS BASKETBALL York The Dukes rebounded from a season-opening 54-40 loss to Prospect last Friday with a win over Conant the next day. In the defeat to the Knights, Sarah Milkowski (nine points) and Molly Schlecht (eight) led York. On Saturday, York beat Conant 56-47. Both games were part of York’s Thanksgiving tournament.

IC Catholic IC opened the season last Friday with a 47-21 win over Westmont. Chiara Gaudio and Abby Radoha scored eight points each

and Kasey Carver had seven. Radoha, Carver, Grace Vitek and Leslie Montoya each hauled in six rebounds. The Knights then beat Regina 46-34 on Monday and a day later, IC made it 3-0 with a 53-30 win over Evergreen Park. Vitek had 12 points Tuesday.

Timothy Christian After dropping the first three games of the season, the Trojans beat IMSA 29-19 on Saturday. Timothy received eight points each from Sarah Nelson and Kaitlyn Gehrke, with Gehrke also grabbing 17 rebounds. Timothy finished the IMSA tournament with a 1-3 record after losing to Rock Island, Aurora Christian and Indian Creek.

Accolades, wins pile up for NCC players SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA The North Central football team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs with an easy 63-7 victory over Albion College (Mich.) on Saturday. The Cardinals, who improved to 11-0 on the fall, will now host University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the second round of the playoffs at noon Saturday. Ryan Kent (York) rushed for 81 yards on 14 carries and scored on a one-yard run. The Cardinals’ offense was in high gear as it churned out 557 yards, bringing their sea-

son total on offense to 5,585. Heading into the second round game, NCC has scored 506 points and is just 18 points shy of setting the program’s single-season scoring record. t’s the holiday season, a time of year where big meals take center stage. But don’t just ill your holiday plate with turkey, gravy and cranberry sauce — pitch in and try your skills in the kitchen. Cooking is about more than just whipping up some yummy food. While you’re having fun making a mess in the kitchen, you’re also learning about safety and following directions, and you’re brushing up on your math skills (whether you like it or not).

With the help of an adult, you can whip up this easy recipe:

Your shopping list: n 1 pie crust (you can buy it frozen, or you can

make it from scratch if you have a recipe) n 1 can of pumpkin puree (15 ounces) n 1 can of sweetened condensed milk (12 ounces) n Whipped cream n 2 eggs n 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon n ? teaspoon ground ginger n 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg n ? teaspoon salt

If it was frozen, follow the instructions on the package for defrosting. If you are making one from scratch, follow the steps in the recipe. Once you have a crust ready to go in a baking tin, pour the pie mixture into the center of the crust, then even it out across the crust.
