Aldermen supporting Morningside favored the developer’s architecture and design.

“I continue to believe that it will be easier for city staff and city council to work with the developer to get the numbers where we want them than to get a design where we want it,” said First Ward Alderman Marti Deuter.

Deuter also noted benefits she saw in Morningside’s design, including the placement of the building’s residential entrance. While Lincoln’s design placed it on York Street, Deuter believed Morningside’s

idea to put the entrance on Addison Avenue would give the building a second front side.

She also favored Morningside’s deep setbacks among other features.

Seventh Ward Alderman Mark Mulliner liked Morningside’s flexibility to transform the luxury rental units into condos. Fifth Ward Alderman Scott Levin argued that the future of condos was too hard to predict, but still favored the Morningside concept.

Once the council chose Morningside, members then discussed which proposal – four or six stories – they preferred.

First Ward Alderman Diane Gutenkauf argued that a six-story building would change the character of the downtown and set a precedent

for other larger buildings.

“We’ve already spent the money on the land,” Gutenkauf said. “At this point it’s really about the quality of the building we get, what it looks like and what it says about how far we’re willing to go.”

Third Ward Alderman Michael Bram questioned the “down-the-line cost” of building a six-story building downtown. He questioned what type of impact the development might have if it creates too much congestion.

Aside from Gutenkauf and Bram, the rest of the council favored Morningside’s six-story proposal.

“Four stories doesn’t even come close to making economic sense for the taxpayers,” Fourth Ward Alderman Stephen Hipskind said.

ELMHURST – The City Council chose Monday to negotiate with Morningside Group with respect to their six-story proposal on the Hahn Street Redevelopment project, which includes first-floor retail, public green space, public parking and luxury rental units.

ELMHURST – After many thanks to city staff, elected officials, community leaders and an impression of former Elmhurst Mayor Tom Marcucci, current mayor Steve Morley praised Elmhurst’s economy Steve during his State Morley of Our City address Tuesday.

“Our financials are better than they’ve been in 10 years,” Morley said.

Although the City Council made what Morley called the “tough decision” to raise taxes about $27 for the average Elmhurst home – the majority of which will go to the city’s pension fund – Morley boasted

the general and working cash funds were within city targets.

“It’s important during good times that we save up our reserves so that when we’re facing some difficult times we actually can tap into those reserves,” Morley said.

Those savings mean the city doesn’t immediately need to raise taxes during a sales tax shortage or other instances. The city’s general fund, which should hold three to four months worth of operating capital is more than $15.5

development in order to broaden the tax base, which he named as one of his two goals for 2014.

The second was improving the city’s infrastructure, specifically flood mitigation.

“This year we need to concentrate on [stormwater] flood mitigation,” Morley said.

He noted that improvements to the sanitary system, which are underway, will affect thousands of homes, but named stormwater as a priority for 2014.

Once again, Morley announced Whole Foods is expected to take over the former Dominick’s property at Elmhurst Crossing, but said an official announcement could happen as soon as a few hours after his speech.

Morley praised Mariano’s as a fantastic anchor for the newly created TIF IV. The city plans to enhance the TIF with a North York Plan, which is in development.

“Developers are literally knocking on our door every day,” Morley said.

He also said the city’s revenue sharing agreement with School District 205, and the Park District for TIF IV is the most progressive in the state and used it as an example of the intergovernmental cooperation he hopes to continue as the city, park district board

Addison Parking Deck hearing continues

“Properties are allowed to go up to 90 feet in the downtown area, however, between

the height of 45 and 90 feet, it is a conditional use,” Elmhurst Zoning Administrator Than Werner said.

The city presented its case for a six-story building with data about parking, traffic and sun studies, comparing a four-story structure to the proposed 65-foot structure. The six-story building would provide 690 parking spaces and a four-story building would provide 460.

Michael MaRous also provided a market-impact analysis, which determined the six-story building, as presented, would not negatively impact the character of the neighborhood.

The Zoning and Planning Commission previously recommended denial for a six-story request made by the developer.

Once the Commission makes a decision, the request will move to the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee.

He also mentioned the city has met twice with Nitti Development, which recently agreed to purchase the Berteau Campus property from Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and plans to develop single-family homes.

He voiced his support for more parking in Elmhurst’s downtown and mentioned the Addison Parking Deck, which is currently under review by the city’s Zoning and Planning

Commission and announced that the city council chose to begin negotiations on the six-story Morningside Group proposal for the long-awaited Hahn Street Redevelopment project.

“I’m trying to put 10 pounds of diamonds in a five-pound bag,” said Morley. “There’s just not enough time in the day for me to say good things about Elmhurst.”

‘She changed their lives’ Elmhurst remembers Connie Weatherford

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Connie Weatherford called her husband, Steve, her hero, but plenty of others would describe Connie in the same way.

“One of the things that caught me off guard was the number of people who said she changed their lives,” said Steve Weatherford of his late wife.

Connie, 53, died Dec. 28 after a battle with breast cancer, but she never let the disease hold her back. She and Steve, an Elmhurst police sergeant, volunteered with the Elmhurst Children’s Assistance Foundation and at Special Kids Day among many other service projects.

For Connie, it was part of what she called “fiercely positive living.” Steve said she always maintained that she wasn’t a victim, but a victor.

Her positive attitude and love for bringing people together made her plenty of friends.

In a Suburban Life story in September, Connie said she was humbled when a Elmhurst Toyota offered to hold a blood drive in her honor.

“She was the most selfless, giving person that I ever came across,” Valerie Dieling said.

Dieling met Connie at her son’s wake. Kyle Dieling was an Elmhurst police officer who died in a car crash three years ago. Soon after, Connie began sending Valerie messages on Facebook with inspirational quotes that Valerie said helped her get through the day.

“She was just like my rock,” Dieling said.

Just last year when Connie was having trouble getting

around, she called Dieling from her car outside Dieling’s work because she had gotten her a cupcake but was too weak to bring it inside.

“If it wasn’t probably for my son passing away, I don’t know if I would have ever met her,” said Dieling, who used to drop off sunflowers – Connie’s favorite – at the police station for Steve to bring home to her.

Agnieszka Dadej became more than Connie’s massage therapist. Steve remembers her coming to visit Connie in the hospital and giving her foot massages for free.

“I really like the way she looks at life,” Dadej said.

Most of all, Dadej remembers how, in spite of all her challenges, Connie always seemed to be looking out for ways she could help others.

“Her biggest accomplishment was the way she treated people,” Steve said.

Beyond her always supportive social media presence and inspiring smile, Connie accomplished plenty. During her life, she loved to travel, went skydiving and was a private pilot at one point. Steve remembers a post on Connie’s blog that talked about the value of the dash between a person’s birth and death dates.

“Connie’s dash is huge,” Steve said.

He said the two of them laughed together every day, and Connie once told him that whether they were going to Hawaii or Home Depot together, she liked traveling with him.

“We had a relationship that most people couldn’t dream of,” Steve said. “I didn’t realize so many other people saw it.”

They referred to each other as soulmates. After a decade of friendship, Steve proposed to Connie in a hot air balloon and the couple married just two months later. Together they volunteered every chance they could, traveled near and far, and lived life to the fullest.

“What Connie wants people to remember is we all have it in us to succeed,” Steve said.

“Just step on the fear.”

A big change in state performance testing Big change is ahead for the public school students of the state of Illinois. For over a decade, each spring, students in grades third through eighth took the Illinois Student Achievement Test while high school juniors took the Prairie State Achievement Exam. Beginning in the spring of 2015, students in all grades third through 11th will take the newly created Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Career assessment.

The PARCC will replace those two assessments as the state’s accountability measure used to assure student progress.

The need for the PARCC was driven by the developCOMMUNITY ment of the Common Core VOICE State Standards. For next Charles year, the PARCC will be comJohns posed of two assessments. The first part of the assessment is referred to as a Performance Based Assessment and will be administered in April. This assessment will include open-ended questions and will be hand scored. In May, the second piece of the assessment will be administered and is referred to as the End-of-Year Assessment for grades third through eighth and the End-of-Course Assessment for grades ninth through 11th.

Depending on the grade level, the assessments can range from 270 to 350 minutes of total assessment time for the Performance Based Assessment and 560 to 595 minutes for the End-ofYear/End-of-Course Assessment. Eventually, the assessment system will include a fall assessment, too. This additional assessment will give districts the ability to gain knowledge about their students in order to make critical academic decisions.

With the advent of PARCC, more students will be assessed.

In years past, students in grades ninth and 10th were not assessed by the state. In addition, the format of the test is going to change. The PARCC assessment will eventually use technology to provide a dynamic testing environment that offers different types of questions which are designed to better evaluate the skill and depth of student understanding.

The computer-based assessment approach presents challenges for school districts throughout the state. Scenario modeling indicates that PARCC testing will require nearly all of Elmhurst District 205’s available computer resources to be dedicated for testing during the two four-week windows.

Fortunately, for the first year of the PARCC administration, the state will offer a paper and pencil version of the test. The administration in District 205 is currently evaluating which assessment methodology is most feasible for the first year and is currently planning for testing related technology needs in 2016.

8LETTERS What is FOIA? To the editor: In a recent Community Voice column John Quigley asked the question “What is FOIA?” I would like to offer another perspective. The purpose of the Illinois Freedom of Information Act is to increase transparency and accountability at all levels of government. FOIA exists to promote the fundamentals of our democracy by mandating that information about public business be made timely available to the public. The presumption of FOIA is that all records that contain public business are presumed open and accessible to the public unless a government body chooses to invoke one or more specific limited exception(s).

It is important to note that the use of an exception is not mandatory; it is a choice the government body makes. Once a government body takes an exception, it is charged with overcoming the presumption of disclosure by making a clear and convincing argument (a legal standard) as to why the exception applies. When

I was so disappointed to see My Favorite Toy Store close in Downers Grove at the end of last year. Its name truly described our family’s feeling about the store! Michael Geisen was a one-of-a-kind owner, personally talking with my daughters when they were young, showing them the latest toy or game and letting them try it out. Energetic employees shared the owner’s philosophy of encouraging kids to have fun in his store. After My Favorite Toy Store came to Downers [Grove], I never visited the big-box stores again for toys, games or crafts. They just didn’t have that personal touch. We have fond memories walking downtown on summer afternoons and “playing” at the family-friendly toy store, it will be greatly missed!

Commissioner not recused from parking deck hearing

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Zoning and Planning commissioner Susan Rose, a former alderman, did not recuse herself from the commission’s public hearing Jan. 23 on the Addison Parking Deck after a member of the public questioned the commission.

“I’d like to hear from the commission how it will navigate the delicate issue of having a member who has confidential knowledge about this project,” said Andrea Alvarez, a law clerk at the Citizen Advocacy Center in Elmhurst.

Rose was appointed to the commission in November. As an alderman, Alvarez said Rose had obtained privileged information about the Addison Parking Deck project

during closed session meetings.

Alvarez said there was no legal standard for recusal since Rose did not have any financial interests related to the project. Instead, Alvarez proposed two options to the council.

She asked the council to adopt a higher standard of recusal or request that Rose disclose all information she acquired about the project as an alderman.

“We see no reason to do that,” Chairman Darrell Whistler said.

He said the commission takes opinions on such matters from its counsel and leaves it up to commissioners to recuse themselves.

“A simple disparity of prior knowledge is not a reason for disqualification,” said

municipal attorney Buzz Hill, who served as the commission’s counsel instead of the city’s attorney because the city, itself, was applying for variances.

Hill explained that, often, members of boards, councils and commissions have prior and different information about an issue that comes before them, but there was no statutory or common law reason for Rose to recuse herself.

“Everybody has a disparity of knowledge about this matter,” Hill said.

Rose maintained this position and said everyone would be “dreadfully disappointed,” if she were to disclose her prior knowledge of the project.

“Any knowledge I had, had nothing to do with any of the zoning issues that we will be discussing,” Rose said.

Over-budget project, stormwater discussed

By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The Public Works and Buildings Committee met Monday to discuss stormwater, upgrades to the sanitary system and the suspended rear yard drain cost-sharing program among other issues.

1. Over-budget plan Costs not seen during estimates related to soil contamination and remodeling pushed project costs related to the Southwest Elmhurst Wet-Weather Control Facility $581,000 over the $9 million budget. To make up the additional costs, city staff recommended postponing a water meter replacement project, which was included in this year’s budget, but isn’t prepared for implementation in 2014 anyway. Staff also suggested deferring a portion of

the water main replacement project that only requires reinforcement and could wait until next year. Another suggestion was bidding out about 90 percent of the sanitary sewer lining project and saving 10 percent for next year.

The committee decided to follow most staff suggestions, but it did bid out the entire sanitary sewer lining project in case bids come in under budget and the entire project could still be completed this year. The committee noted the possibility of waiting on the 10 percent.

2. Stormwater update City staff is continuing to work with Christopher B. Burke Engineering on a formula and spreadsheet inspired by guidelines used in La Grange and other communities to determine stormwater storage requirements for

new construction homes. In addition, Public Works and Buildings committee chairman Jim Kennedy wants to prioritize projects in the Burke report with the help of city staff by establishing a base line of protection with respect to a certain level storm event and comparing costs and how many homes each project will affect.

3. Rear yard drains City staff assembled data looking at the type of connections made under the city’s suspended rear yard drain program during the past five years. The committee plans to discuss the data and staff recommendations at the next meeting. While the cost-sharing program is suspended, homeowners can still connect yard drains, downspouts and sump pumps to the city’s storm sewer at their own expense.

Common Core State Standards A Statement by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Catholic schools have a long-standing commitment to academic excellence that is rooted in the faith- based mission of Catholic education. The Common Core State Standards in no way compromise the Catholic identity or educational program of a Catholic school.

The Common Core State Standards initiative, begun in 2007, is a state-led, bipartisan effort that is not a requirement for participation in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or any other federally- funded program, and there are no mandates for any Catholic school to follow any federal rules if they adopt the Common Core.

Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary; individual states, Catholic dioceses and other private schools make their own decisions about whether to adopt the standards.

The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students that focus on preparing them to succeed in college and careers in a globally competitive workplace. The standards define and clearly communicate grade-specific goals and inform parents about learning outcomes, making it easier for parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children achieve success.

The Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum. A curriculum includes what is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught and what materials to use. None of these items are included in the Common Core State Standards. For Catholic schools, all of these elements will continue to be determined by diocesan superintendents, principals and teachers working to meet the needs of their students.

The Common Core represents a fundamental shift in the teaching and learning process. The Common Core establishes clear, measurable goals for students that assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The standards place emphasis on creativity, critical and analytical thinking and application to curriculum content. The Common Core is not a national curriculum. It guides the way that instruction takes place in each classroom, allowing the Catholic school to develop its own curriculum content.

An excellent Catholic school provides a rigorous academic curriculum that integrates faith and knowledge. As trained professionals, Catholic school administrators and teachers continually seek the best instructional methods for educating students. In the past, dioceses and schools have developed their own standards or adapted state standards for use with their own curriculum. Some will continue to do this.

To assist those incorporating the new standards, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and partners in Catholic education established the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative (CCCII). CCCII provides resources to design and direct the implementation of Common Core within the culture and context of a Catholic school curriculum. Thus Catholic schools can infuse the standards with the faith, principles, values and social justice themes inherent in the mission of a Catholic school.

Bakersfield gives fresh spin to American fare WESTMONT – With its open floor plan and California-style setting, Bakersfield gives west suburban diners a fresh experience, and some good food, too.

The restaurant pairs its modern, airy atmosphere with a made-from-scratch menu that’s mostly American with accents from a number of cuisines. Bakersfield touts its homemade fare featuring fresh ingredients picked from just across Ogden Avenue at its sister store Standard Market, an upscale grocery that chose Westmont for its first location in 2011.

A companion and I visited Bakersfield on a recent weeknight, a chilly evening that made complimentary valet service quite beneficial.

As we entered the restaurant, our eyes immediately went to the far side, where diners can see a half-dozen or so chefs busy preparing the night’s dishes. The lack of a wall gives a peek into the preparation involved, especially appealing to foodies.

The open setting continues throughout the restaurant, with a three-sided bar on one end and an elevated seating area on the opposite, although diners get an intimate experience with raised booths that are just tall enough.

For starters, my date and I kicked off our meal with the Housemade Guacamole, a generous portion with chips and a side of salsa. Our server even offered refills.

The guacamole was creamy and fresh, and the salsa had a nice hint of chipotle. If you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine, definitely give it a try. Other appetizer selections at Bakersfield include Pot Roast Sliders, Crispy Thai Shrimp and Blue Crab Dip. For her main course, my date, at first indecisive, opted for the pan-roasted Chilean Sea Bass. She loved the dish, and said it was just the right amount.

Knights knock off Trojans in crosstown clash

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – IC Catholic sophomore Rhashaun Epting and Timothy Christian senior Connor VanderBrug carry a big load for each team.

The two put on a matching show in Saturday’s crosstown Coaches vs. Cancer game at IC Catholic, but Epting hit the bigger shots to help his team win, 58-49.

Epting drained three straight 3-pointers during a stretch in the third quarter to hold off a Trojan rally and finished with 20 points. The 6-foot-3 forward played more of a perimeter game because he is still recovering from a strained hamstring, but still put in big numbers.

“Any time you play another team in Elmhurst [it’s a big game],” Epting said. “They beat us last year so we just had to get revenge.”

VanderBrug scored 23 points, but picked up his third foul with 1:58 left in the second quarter and sat out the rest of the half. The Knights took advantage with a 6-0 run to close the half up 26-22, a lead they would not relinquish.

“He caught a couple [fouls] and it got him out of rhythm a little bit,” TC coach Jack LeGrand said. “We didn’t execute, either. IC did a really nice job and they’re a very good basketball team. With our big guy sitting on the bench, we’re not going to get it done. We didn’t handle that as well as I’d hoped.”

IC (15-3) led 43-37 entering the fourth quarter, but the Trojans (10-6) started the quarter on a 6-2 run with all six points coming from VanderBrug. The Knights scored the next six points and kept the Trojans at bay the rest of the game.

Epting has taken on a bigger role with the team this year.

Despite being an all-conference player as a freshman, Epting was not the focal point of the

offense as he is now.

“Last year we had Demetrius Carr who was a go-to guy and Rhashaun was a freshman learning from him and battling with him everyday,” IC coach T.J. Tyrrell said. “This year we needed a guy to step up, and he’s been the one who’s done that.”

As for the Trojans, they are hoping they can replace Khali Valrie, who will miss the rest of the season after being ruled ineligible. Saturday’s game was the Trojans’ first game without their second-leading scorer.

VanderBrug will remain a key part of the team that is second in the Metro Suburban Conference and faces third place Glenbard South tonight, but other players will also have to step up to replace Valrie, who was starting at point guard.

“Joe Bishop, a junior, and sophomore Ben Lodewyk will handle a lot of the ballhandling responsibilities as well as Connor,” LeGrand said. “We’re trying to regroup, trying to fit some pieces and go from there.

“I don’t think we’ll surprise anybody the second round [of conference games], so we’ll have to be on top of our game.”

With the Denver Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning set to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, few people can offer the perspective of Ryan Diem. A former teammate of Manning, the Glenbard North graduate played 11 seasons in the NFL as a member of the Indianapolis Colts before retiring in 2011.

Still living in Indianapolis with his family, the former offensive lineman is now involved with a couple of different businesses, primarily a software company called CloudOne. Diem and his family return to the Chicago area every year for the Ryan Diem’s Allie & Friends Golf Classic. In nine years, the event has raised more than $1 million for neuroblastoma cancer research.

Diem talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Scott Schmid about Manning and his own career.

Immovable object vs. irresistible force at Super Bowl XLVIII NEW YORK – As Super Bowl matchups go it doesn’t get much better than Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos.

For starters, you’ve got the two best teams in the NFL without question as this is just the second time in the past 20 seasons that both the NFC’s and AFC’s top seeds have advanced to the playoffs.

Perhaps more impressive, this is just the fifth Super Bowl in history and the first since the New York Giants played the Buffalo Bills following the 1990 season that the NFL’s top scoring team, Denver with 606 points has faced the leagues number one scoring defense, Seattle with 231 points allowed.

It gets better. This is just the second time in Super Bowl history the league’s top team in total offense, Denver – 7,317 total yards, 457.3/game has faced the top defense, Seattle allowing just 4,378 total yards, 273.6/game.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said, “It’s historically as hard as it gets. It can’t get any tougher. They’ve done everything – broken every major

record in the throwing game, points and everything. Peyton’s (Manning) been extraordinary. He’s had the year that everyone would dream to have.

We’re up against it.”

Broncos head coach John Fox knows he’s got his hands full as well.

“I think for the fans it’s an incredible matchup,” Fox said. “Watching them (Seattle) and knowing Pete Carroll for many years, I’ve got the utmost respect. They’ve done a lot in a short period of time. I think it’s a tribute to their personnel people. Their whole team has done a heck of a job.”

Those Seahawk personnel folks Fox complimented found six Pro Bowlers including three of the four starting defensive backs in Seattle’s “Legion of Boom” secondary, Richard Sherman,

They will anchor the key matchup in the game versus Denver Pro Bowlers Manning, guard Louis Vasquez, wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, tight end Julius Thomas, former Pro Bowl wideout Wes Welker, Eric Decker and running back Knowshon Moreno.

It’s almost impossible to remember a team with more weapons on offense than the record-setting Broncos.

But don’t discount Seattle’s offense lead by a few Pro Bowlers of its own – center Max Unger, running back Marshawn Lynch and quarterback Russell Wilson.

Lynch is the only player in the NFL to rush for more than 1,000 yards and score at least 10 touchdowns in each of the past three seasons.

Wilson has won 27 games as a starting quarterback in the NFL, including three playoff games and is trying to join Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger as the only quarterbacks in history to win a Super Bowl in his first or second season.

Upon arriving in New Jersey Manning said of Wilson, “I met Russell Wilson, believe it or not, when I was visiting the Broncos. I believe it was after I signed with the Broncos. They were having players come in for visits before the draft. I was actually in the film room watching some tape, and someone brought Russell in. I had a chance to shake his hand. I wished him luck and told him I enjoyed watching his college career.”

Wilson knows he had a brush with greatness and seems to understand his place in the QB matchup.

“They have an unbelievable quarterback in Peyton Manning. I have so much respect for him and what he’s done over his entire career. He deserves all of the credit. He’s an unbelievable quarterback and human being.

“Just the energy in this area right now, in New Jersey. All of you guys (media) here in the New York area, it’s going to be a great scene. It’s going to be a great game. It’s going to be a battle to the end and I’m really looking forward to that game!”

Garoppolo said after the first practice that in terms of areas of improvement, coaches wanted him to work on his footwork, since he was “fairly new” to the 3-, 5- and 7-step drops.

“It’s a repetition thing,” he said.

“Once you start doing it so much, you get used to it.”

Fisch acknowledged that it’s tough to work on a technique in only one week, but he seemed impressed with Garoppolo’s footwork.

“I think his footwork’s been pretty good,” he said. “I think he’s done a nice job, throws with a nice face with good feet so it’s pretty neat to see.”

Garoppolo knows that while he may have the moxie that coaches want in a quarterback, he needs to show he has the physical tools as well.

“If you’re a leader, they’ll know you’re a leader by how you act on the field,” he said about the balancing act.

“If you can throw the ball, they’ll know that by the end of the day. You’ve just got to come out here, be yourself and compete.”

A Bears fan, Garoppolo said Jay Cutler is his favorite Chicago quarterback. The two might differ in personality, but Cutler has plenty of confidence, something Garoppolo said he knows he needs to show during the draft process, and he can gain that more with his arm than his words.

“If you belong, you belong. If you don’t, you’re going to stick out and people are going to know that you don’t belong,” he said.

As the days went by in Mobile, Fisch saw a trend. Maybe Garoppolo read the articles about his rising draft stock, but more likely, he saw what he was capable of against top competition.

“Each day, I have noticed a trend in a way, that his confidence has continued to improve and therefore his charisma has showed up,” Fisch said. “He has a nice presence about himself.”

MOBILE, Ala. – Regardless of what the unknown team sought when asking Jimmy Garoppolo, “Name as many things as you can do with a brick in a minute,” the personnel folks probably were impressed with how the Eastern Illinois quarterback handled his interview.

“All the questions have a purpose behind them,” Garoppolo said at the Senior Bowl, laughing about the odd question he received. “Sometimes you don’t know what they are; you’ve just got to answer truthfully, really.”

A linebacker until his junior year at Rolling Meadows High School, Garoppolo didn’t receive a single Division I offer. Four years later, his performance at the East-West Shrine game last week earned him a last-minute invitation to the Senior Bowl – a long journey that continues to be positive for Garoppolo.

“Last week helped me out,” he said

when asked about dealing with the stigma of being an Football Championship Subdivision quarterback playing with the big boys. “You guys talk about it, scouts Jimmy talk about it, but I’m done with that. … We’re Garoppolo all on the same playing field, same playing level.”

“I think it’s a pretty neat deal,” said Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, who worked extensively with the quarterbacks on the South team.

“The opportunity to have an Auburn pass rusher lined up and a Florida state pass rasher, a Georgia corner, now all of a sudden he’s playing with a different group two weeks in a row and two different offenses in a row. I think it’s pretty cool to watch his development.”
