DIXON

From presidents to pharmacy empires, Dixon has left its mark on the nation

D

ixon was one of the first towns established in northwest Illinois. Its location along the Rock River provided a key linchpin for travel through this part of the state. In 1830, “Father” John Dixon operated a rope ferry that enabled early pioneers to cross the river on their way from Peoria to the lead mines in Galena. The town’s name soon evolved from “Dixon’s Ferry” to Dixon.

HISTORY OF DIXON Several famous Americans became associated with this historic city. Abraham Lincoln was stationed at Fort Dixon in 1832 during the Black Hawk War. The Lincoln Monument State Memorial, erected in 1930 between the city’s two bridges on the north side of the river, marks the spot where Fort Dixon stood and where Lincoln served.

Charles R. Walgreen (18731939), the founder of one of the world’s largest pharmacy chains, was raised in Dixon, where he began his career as a pharmacist. The city’s airport, Charles R. Walgreen Field, is named in his honor.

The city’s most famous resident is Ronald Reagan, the nation’s 40th president. Reagan lived in Dixon from 1920 to 1928, when he graduated from Dixon High School. Reagan often spoke

of his fond memories growing up in Dixon, where he learned values that propelled his later career as governor of California (1967-1975) and president of the United States (1981-1989).

The Reagan Boyhood Home on Hennepin Avenue is among the city’s most famous historic sites, and statues of Reagan stand at the home and in the center of the city’s popular Riverfront Park.

Dixon has often claimed to have more park area per capita than any city in the state. Its largest park is the 200-acre Lowell Park along the Rock River, where Ronald Reagan served as a lifeguard, saving 77 lives during his high school summers in the 1920s. The park, founded in 1907, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the nation’s worst bridge disasters took place in

Dixon on May 4, 1873. About 150 to 200 people stood on the city’s only bridge on Galena Avenue, watching a baptism ceremony on the north bank of the river. The bridge suddenly collapsed, causing the deaths of 46 men, women, and children, and inflicting significant injuries to at least 56 others. A marker at the east end of the city’s Riverfront Park commemorates the tragic event, and a landmark at Presidents Park, unveiled in 2023, tells the full story.

Other sites of interest include the iconic Dixon Arch, or the War Memorial Arch, which stands over the city’s busiest street. Originally built in 1919 to welcome home the veterans of World War I, the arch stands next to the historic Nachusa House, which was built as a hotel in 1853.

The Northwest Territory Historic Center (at 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue) is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, offering several Smithsonianquality exhibits of the history of the area. DEVELOPMENT Projects planned in the City of Dixon in 2024

D

ixon has been absolutely bustling with economic planning and growth in recent years. The city has seen many new, local businesses start up or expand in all areas of the city. Downtown Dixon is thriving, the southwest side’s Depot Avenue corridor is growing, and the interstate corridor is exploding. Small business owners and entrepreneurs have been fueling much of this growth.

The City of Dixon has been directly involved in major projects, too. One such project is Viaduct Point, which

will expand our wonderful downtown to the west. The Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) project broke ground on a 1.5 mile bike path with an anticipated completion date of May 2024. The $5.6 million dollars in awarded grant funding will help transform damaged riverfront property into prime useable land, expand walking paths, and build a boardwalk up to the old railroad viaducts. In the center of all this will be new prime riverfront real estate ready for commercial and prime residential development.

Project ROCK is supported by a $12 million federal RAISE grant to build a pedestrian bridge across the Rock River from Viaduct Point to Page Park, which runs along the north riverbank. This project will expand the shared use path to the west along the south riverfront as well as build up new pathways in Page Park. Design engineering is underway with a total of 2.8 miles of pathway with construction slated to begin in late 2024.

Dixon is seeing massive success next to Interstate 88 with the Gateway Project.

The $5.6 million dollar infrastructure is

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT almost complete and there are several businesses in different phases of construction.

Chipotle is leading the way as the first to completion and will be open early 2024! There is also substantial progress on a new hotel, Tru by Hilton.

Meanwhile, a multi-tenant building is taking shape, soon to be the home of popular establishments like Jersey Mike’s, LA Nail, and T-Mobile.

Serving as a testament to the thriving business-friendly culture is the growth of our Industrial Park. Three local, long-standing businesses are celebrating expansion into the Park.

Raynor Worldwide celebrated their grand opening of a new facility in the summer of 2023.

Bonnell Industries and Sewer Equipment will soon follow after receiving state incentives based on job creation and facility expansion. The Industrial Park

not only serves as an economic engine, but also as a focal point for innovation, job creation, and prosperity.

In the realm of communitycentric initiatives, the YMCA Daycare has commenced site ground preparation.

Simultaneously, ground preparations for the Casey's General Store are in their final stages, promising convenience and accessibility for residents.

The community's thoroughfares are receiving a facelift, with the successful reconstruction of Division and Fargo Street, crucial routes leading to Reagan Middle School. Beyond this, the City of Dixon has completed over $1 million in street resurfacing during the recent construction season, ensuring smooth travels and fortifying the community's overall infrastructure.

The City is not even close to being done and is committed to continuous improvement and addressing unmet needs.

The City of Dixon along with Lee County were recently awarded a Strong Communities grant to focus on housing.

Our community has become excellent at planning major

projects, crafting financial plans to fund them, and executing at a high level. It’s truly wonderful to see the results coming in each year!

Dixon Park District offers more than ever to residents seeking activities 20 Dixon Chamber of Commerce & Main Street

T

he Dixon Park District has been an agent of growth and change in Dixon the past few years, consistently finding ways to improve the quality of life for residents in our community.

In October 2023, the Park District opened its newest and largest playground at Vaile Park, which features a 100-foot zip line swing, along with multiple slides and fun playground equipment.

Dixon Park District opened The Facil ity, an indoor recreation center, in August 2022.

It was another milestone in an impressive stretch of progress for the Park District.

In August 2022, the Park District celebrated one of its biggest achievements yet with opening the community’s first indoor recreation center.

The new facility houses SVB Courts, featuring two high school size courts, as well as Trinity Financial Community Room, and the park district offices.

The park district was able to fund the project from its operating budget, without requiring a taxrate increase, something of which Executive Director Duane Long is very proud.

PARKS & RECREATION

The new facility has allowed the Park District to offer more programming, including Little Sparks for ages 2 to 5 and half-day programs for the older kids. It also now serves as a perfect location for the Park District’s popular SPARK Camp each summer, among other camps and clinics.

All ages come to the new facility to enjoy the amenities, which include basketball, volleyball and two batting cages. The equipment can be raised or lowered as needed, allowing for versatility and quick setup.

The new facility also features a large video board used to display community messages, information on Park District programs, and can even be used to play films for family movie nights.

Trinity Financial Community Room and the adjoining patio space are perfect for hosting small events like birthday parties, and bridal and baby showers. Rentals are available during open hours, and private blocks on the weekends as well.

While the spotlight and excitement has been on the new indoor facility, the park district has made other improvements to its outdoor locations as well.

Just a few blocks from the new facility is the Terry Nichols Pickleball Complex featuring six new courts with lights. People of all ages can be seen enjoying the courts.

Another recent addition to the park district is the new inclusive playground in John Dixon Park. The playground includes a rubber surface, mobility device accessible ramps and an inclusive merry-go-round.

Another popular amenity has been the indoor golf simulator at the Miller Golf Complex. Golf enthusiasts can work on their swing year-round using the top-ofthe-line simulator.

t doesn’t matter if a business dates back through multiple generations or is so new the smell of paint is still fresh – when a customer opens the door to enter a local business, they are supporting a business owner’s dreams and the greater Dixon community.

Some of the newer businesses stem from interests of those who have recently begun moving back to the area. As the younger generation returns to Dixon to raise their families, they are bringing their interests and talents to craft new businesses and reinvigorate the community. “[We are] lucky to have so many options in Dixon,” said Sarah Partington, Student Recruiting and Impact Coordinator of Sauk Valley Community College. “My favorites would be Revive Boutique,

Asterisk, Rustic Roots, Pam's Hallmark and Modern Magnolia. They always carry items that are great if you're shopping for yourself or a gift.”

In addition to finding unique crafted items and supporting the businesses owners, one of the best advantages to shopping and dining locally is keeping the dollars in the community, in both tax revenue as well as the way many small businesses share their support with contributions, such as giving a basket of items to raffle at a school fundraiser or financial support for youth sports and programming.

Mandy Curia Hinkey of Ken Nelson Auto Group believes its this positivity that sets Dixon apart, specifically noting a few who shine.

“Sheryl [at Rejuvenate Health and Wellness Center] is the most accommodating and compassionate person ever,” Hinkey said, and added that Kaleel’s Clothing and Printing are also great champions for the community, “Renee and Kiara [at Kaleel’s Clothing and Printing] are the absolute best!”

A few years ago, the Dixon Chamber of Commerce acquired downtown property and offered it as an incubator where a fledgling business could lease space and test the waters. The first business to utilize the space was jboutique, and they soon outgrew the space and relocated to a new, larger space.

Service-based businesses as well as the local restaurants benefit from community support. Customers can find delicious, often homemade dishes ranging from baked goods to steaming bowls of pasta, to freshfrom-the-oven pizza and much more. The cuisine had expanded through the years, and today there are great choices whether it’s a quick midday meal or family celebration.

“We are really lucky in Dixon to have so many amazing options for place to eat,” said Partington. “If I had to choose my favorite, I would certainly say Coffee Crush. They have so many delicious gluten-free options for breakfast and lunch. My favorite drink is their Joyous Chai ... yes, it's a Christmas drink and, yes, I order all year round.”

he Dixon area is home to a variety of houses of worship ready to welcome guests, but for some people, joining a congregation is more finding the right place to pray.

One way local congregations extend that love is through service projects.

There are countless efforts to benefit the community throughout the year made by congregations in Dixon.

One of the many examples is St. Paul Lutheran Church youth purchasing gifts for Goodfellows of Lee County, which provides gifts and food to families in need during the holiday season.

Congregations even travel to other neighboring communities to lend a hand, like First United Methodist Church, which traveled to Sugar Creek United Methodist Church to help clean up storm damage in June 2023.

In 2023, the First Presbyterian Church of Dixon’s Presbyterian Women’s Group designated gifts to Pegasus Special Riders, Florissa, Shining Star, Goodfellows, Meals on Wheels, Dixon Food Pantry, and PADS Homeless Shelter.
