History of
DIXON From presidents to pharmacy empires, Dixon has left its mark on the nation
D
ixon was one of the first towns established in northwest Illinois. Its location along the Rock River provided a key linchpin for travel through this part of the state. In 1830, “Father” John Dixon operated a rope ferry that enabled early pioneers to cross the river on their way from Peoria to the lead mines in Galena. The town’s name soon evolved from “Dixon’s Ferry” to Dixon.

HISTORY OF DIXON Several famous Americans became associated with this historic city. Abraham Lincoln was stationed at Fort Dixon in 1832 during the Black Hawk War. The Lincoln Monument State Memorial, erected in 1930 between the city’s two bridges on the north side of the river, marks the spot where Fort Dixon stood and where Lincoln served. Charles R. Walgreen (1873-1939), the founder of one of the world’s largest pharmacy chains, was raised in Dixon, where he began his career as a pharmacist. The city’s airport, Charles R. Walgreen Field, is named in his honor. The city’s most famous resident is Ronald Reagan, the nation’s 40th president. Reagan lived in Dixon from 1920 to 1928, when he graduated from Dixon High School. Reagan often spoke of his fond memories growing up in Dixon, where he learned values that propelled his later

career as governor of California (1967-1975) and president of the United States (1981-1989). The Reagan Boyhood Home on Hennepin Avenue is among the city’s most famous historic sites, and statues of Reagan stand at the home and in the center of the city’s popular Riverfront Park. Dixon has often claimed to have more park area per capita than any city in the state. Its largest park is the 200-acre Lowell Park along the Rock River, where Ronald Reagan served as a lifeguard, saving 77 lives during his high school summers in the

About 150 to 200 people stood on the city’s only bridge on Galena Avenue, watching a baptism ceremony on the north bank of the river. The bridge suddenly collapsed, causing the deaths of 46 men, women, and children, and inflicting significant injuries to at least 56 others. A marker at the east end of the city’s Riverfront Park commemorates
Other sites of interest include the iconic Dixon Arch, or the War Memorial Arch, which stands over the city’s busiest street. Originally built in 1919 to welcome home the veterans of World War I, the arch stands next to the historic Nachusa House, which was built as a hotel in 1853. The Northwest Territory Historic Center (at 5th Street and Hennepin Avenue) is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, offering several Smithsonianquality exhibits of the history of the area. The building was formerly Ronald Reagan’s boyhood school, as the museum features exhibits about the area’s Native American roots, Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, Charles Walgreen, and much more. n Written by Tom Wadsworth. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Downtown Dixon and the riverfront remain central to this momentum. The Viaduct Point project has advanced the community’s long-term riverfront vision by expanding multi-use pathways and reconnecting downtown to the Rock River. These improvements have transformed formerly underutilized spaces into vibrant, accessible public assets while laying the groundwork for future commercial and residential development along the riverfront. Building on this success, Project ROCK has moved from planning into active construction phases. This transformational project will create a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge across the Rock River opening in the summer of 2026, linking Viaduct Point to Page Park and extending trail connections on both sides of the river. With additional grant funding secured to fully support final construction phases, Project ROCK is poised to dramatically enhance connectivity, outdoor recreation, and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Dixon’s Interstate 88 corridor continues to experience rapid growth through the Gateway Project, which has become one of the community’s most significant economic engines. Infrastructure investments have

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT commercial spaces, and additional service providers are strengthening Dixon’s regional draw, creating jobs, expanding the tax base, and offering convenient amenities for residents and travelers. Future phases of the Gateway Project are expected to bring continued private investment and long-term economic returns. The Industrial Park remains a cornerstone of Dixon’s employment base and economic resilience. Long-standing local manufacturers have expanded operations, reinforcing Dixon’s reputation as a hub for innovation, skilled jobs, and industrial growth. Through ongoing site marketing and the use of state and federal incentives, the community is well positioned to attract new employers while supporting the continued success of existing businesses. As growth accelerates, housing has emerged as a key priority for the next phase of community development. Dixon, in partnership with Lee County, has secured Strong Communities funding to address abandoned and underutilized residential properties. These efforts are helping

“It’s an absolute gem of the downtown district,” said Brent Reuter, Dixon Township Supervisor. “You could get lost in history and memorabilia for hours. From vinyl records to antiques/collectibles, there is a treasure for everyone!”
Mandy Hinkey of Ken Nelson Auto Group believes it is this positivity that sets Dixon apart.
Speaking of history, many of the businesses in Dixon have enjoyed longstanding success, including Venier Jewelers. “Being a generational business for 80 years, you can feel that [Venier Jewelers] is familyowned, and community grown,” Reuter said. “One step in that door and you not only feel like part of the family, but also part of the community.” In addition to finding unique

“Kaleel’s Clothing and Printing are great champions for the community,” she said. “Renee and Kiara [at Kaleel’s] are the absolute best!” A few years ago, the Dixon Chamber of Commerce acquired downtown property and offered it as an incubator where a fledgling business could lease space and test the waters. Local providers care for the community
F
or more than a century, Dixon’s local hospital has been a cornerstone of care for its residents. That legacy continues as OSF HealthCare Saint Katharine Medical Center became the newest member of the OSF HealthCare Ministry. Formerly Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital (KSB), the 80-bed acute care hospital joined OSF on Jan. 1, 2025, marking an important step in strengthening local access to high-quality, mission-driven rural health care.
YOUR TRANSPORTATION. YOUR COMMUNITY. YOUR CONNECTION. Reagan Mass Transit District is dedicated to providing dependable, accessible transportation for residents throughout our service region, including rides to Rockford and DeKalb. Our local transit options make it easy to get to work, attend appointments, head to class at the university, run errands, or simply enjoy time around town—without the worry of navigating traffic. With a strong focus on safety, reliability, and customer care, our team is committed to supporting your transportation needs. Every ride with us is backed by trained professionals, wellmaintained vehicles, and a mission to serve the community with excellence.

HEALTH CARE The transition followed months of planning and integration work. While the name has changed, hospital leadership emphasizes the continuity of compassionate care delivered by familiar faces who have long served the Sauk Valley community. OSF Saint Katharine is one of Lee County’s largest employers, now welcoming 900 new Mission Partners across the hospital and six clinic locations in Lee and Ogle counties. As part of OSF HealthCare’s regional network, Dixon patients now benefit from expanded digital tools, improved care coordination, and access to higher-level services throughout the OSF system. New offerings enhance convenience, communication, and clinical quality. The hospital also remains home to important training programs in podiatry and rural family medicine, supporting the future of rural healthcare.
Today, that history is reflected in the new name and in OSF’s commitment to preserving and growing local care.
OSF Saint Katharine’s deep roots in the community date back to 1897, when Judge Solomon Bethea established the hospital to honor his late wife, Katherine.
Rural hospitals play a vital role in the economic and social health of their regions, and OSF Saint Katharine continues that tradition as a major
employer and community partner. Leaders say the goal is clear: strengthen services close to home, expand opportunities for patients and providers, and ensure Dixon remains a regional hub for high-quality care well into the future.

ne way local congregations extend that love is through service projects. There are countless efforts to benefit the community throughout the year made by congregations in Dixon.
Many congregations chip in to keep our community safe, collecting coats, boots, mittens, hats, scarves, snow pants and more for the community. This is just one of the many ways our local congregations help families in need throughout the year.
One of the many examples is St. Paul Lutheran Church and Immanuel Lutheran Church youth purchasing gifts for Goodfellows of Lee County, which provides gifts and food to families in need during the holiday season.
What’s more, is the wonderful collaboration among the different ministers sharing resources and helping each other as needed in Dixon.
Congregations work together on community events, like Grace United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, which host events, such as an annual Trunk & Treat together.
