DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove resident and Scout Jake Burrows has provided the students of Elizabeth Ide Elementary School with the gift of the written word by installing a Little Free Library at the Darien school.

The unveiling of the library took place May 27.

A Little Free Library is a small box of books where community members can take a book and give a book as they please. The organization’s mission is to build a sense of community by sharing skills, creativity and wisdom through generations, according to Little Free Library’s website.

Janet Schultz, a second-grade teacher at Elizabeth Ide, said Burrows did a wonderful job creating the Little Free Library.

“Jake organized everything so well.

He even put in a bench so that people could sit and read after they pick up a book,” she said. “The children are so excited about this new library that’s within walking distance for some of them.”

The historical Edwards House remains standing as of June 2 after a long fight to move or protect the home, but its time is coming to a close. A developer officially received paperwork to demolish the house last week to make way for a new condominium development and has already began tearing down the trees on the property. inevitability and said there were too many obstacles in front of the effort to save the home. walk the line between what both sides wanted but hoped the condo would prove a successful investment for the village.

Resident Tom Nybo, one of the leaders of the Friends of the Edwards House group aimed at preserving the home, said supporters did everything the village asked but came up short.

He thanked everyone who helped in the effort and vowed to continue it.

Nybo said he and the other group members plan on shifting their focus to improve village incentives for marking historical homes and creating historical zones.

“It raised some awareness and created a new mindset – ‘We need to be thinking about this before it’s all gone,’” he said. “If this happens, its going to happen again.”

Tully said the council will be looking at revising zoning and the historic preservation ordinances as part of its long-range planning in the next month “in light of the lessons learned” with the Edwards House.

He said he would like to see the inability to save the home serve as a call to action for the community.

“Hopefully, at least some good comes of it,” Tully said.

DOWNERS GROVE – After months of back-and-forth negotiations, community outcry and planning, the Edwards House is coming down.

Demolition of the historic home and the property next to it at 942 Maple Ave. and 936 Maple Ave., respectively, began May 29.

David Sosin, an attorney for developer FFM-DG Development, picked up a demolition permit from the village May 28, and by the next day, trees on the property were already being removed. Sosin said the developer plans to put up fencing and begin tearing down the houses this week to start the estimated 12-month construction of a new condominium development.

“We’re very proud to have the first building of this type contemplated by the code to further the process of the resurrection of the downtown area on the south side,” he said.

For months, residents spoke out against the teardown of the 1890s Queen Anne Victorian. Divisions within the village council and public largely revolved around finding a way to preserve the house while still developing the property, which is in a downtown tax increment financing district.

Despite separate offers from Downers Grove residents to relocate the house, the village, community members and developer didn’t come to a conclusive deal.

“We’re certainly sorry we couldn’t make everybody happy, but we’re following the code and we’re validating the vision of the Downers Grove council,” Sosin said.

He said the home was “in a lot worse shape than anybody who hasn’t examined it understands” and called it “dangerous,” something supporters have denied. Sosin added the developer plans to use several style elements of the Edwards House in the new condos, including stained glass windows.

Resident to compete in Miss Teen United States

By EVAN SHIELDS eshields@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – A Downers Grove resident will represent Illinois this summer after winning the Miss Teen Illinois United States pageant.

Arnela Karabegovic, 17, has only been doing pageants for a year and was drawn to pageants after watching them.

“I’ve always seen Miss America and Miss Universe on TV,” she said.

A student at Downers Grove South High School, Karabegovic decided she wanted to get involved with pageants, but said it was “nothing like I imagined.”

The pageant, which took place March 27 to 29, involves not just eveningwear and swimsuits, but also volunteering and community service.

Each pageant contestant has a group they represent.

Karabegovic represented the Project Michelangelo Foundation, an Illinois organization that provides assistance to children with life-threatening diseases and helps in times of disaster.

Karabegovic said she was estactic when she was crowned Miss Teen Illinois and is humbled by the chance

to represent her community and state during the Miss Teen United States pageant.

“It was amazing. It was such an honor to represent my hometown of Downers Grove and the state of Illinois,” she said.

Derrick Lee, executive director of the Miss Illinois United States Organization, said Karabegovic was the “whole package” in terms of what Miss Teen Illinois represents.

“Arnela brought great stage presence and a personality the Miss World favors,” he said.

Lee is helping Karabegovic prepare for the Miss Teen United States pageant, which will be held July 1 to 5 in Washington, D.C. She is working out and preparing for interviews and other tasks she will be required to perform.

“She’s definitely a future Miss World in our opinion,” Lee said.

Karabegovic, who has been modeling for the past 10 years, said she plans to take part in more pageants in the future, but she’s focused on one in particular for now.

“Hopefully I bring the crown home from Washington,” she said.

Coonley students triumph as national chess champs

By KEVIN BEESE editorial@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – Students at The Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove are getting valuable life lessons while sitting at chessboards.

Competitors in the school’s chess club had an impressive showing at a national tournament in May and are learning the need for good decisions.

“It is important to make wise moves,” Coonley trainer Shiva Maharaj said. “In chess, you make bad moves and you pay the price. Chess comes with thinking. Planning is important to make wise moves.”

Maharaj, who trains chess enthusiasts throughout the Chicago area, said chess helps develop the thinking skills young people will need for the jobs of the future.

“Chess is making a big push in schools today,” Maharaj said. “Eighty percent of jobs in the future will need a math or computer background …

Chess is consistent with the mental attributes individuals will need for jobs.”

Maharaj, who has played the game more than 35 years and calls former international chess champion Garry Kasparov a friend, said it is not just teaching kids the game or winning moves that is important. Teaching them about defeat also matters.

“It is important to learn from mistakes and come back stronger,” Maharaj said.

However, the Avery Coonley students didn’t make a lot of mistakes in the U.S. Chess Federation’s 2015 National Elementary (K-6) Championship held May 8 to 10 in Nashville, Tenn. Two Coonley teams and four individuals placed in the top 25 in the national tournament.

First-grader Alex Zhao, a member of Coonley’s K-1 team, placed first individually with a perfect score of seven games won. His team finished fifth in the competition.

Other top individual showings were: • Neola Edwin: Third in the K-3 U600 division • Benjamin Broach: 14th in the K-6 U1000 division • Oias Vasisht: 25th in the K-6 U1000 division Also placing in the top 25 was the Coonley K-3 team, which earned 15th place.

Raj Goyal, whose son, Liam, is a kindergartner and Coonley chess player, said the chemistry Maharaj created is something special.

“I think he will keep with it,” Goyal said, of his son playing chess. “It is not about the trophies; it is about being part of the team. I feel he has a sense of knowing that he belongs, that he makes a contribution.”

Goyal said he sees a difference in his son since he started playing chess.

“He has always been positive and cheerful, but, with chess, his confidence has flourished,” Goyal said.

Shields: Can you tell me a little bit about what the book is about?

Davy: In short, it’s about pet grief.

It’s about the loss people experience when their animal dies. It’s a very important subject because a lot of people go through a lot of things when their dog or cat dies – or it could be a rabbit, parrot, whatever animal they have connected with. Unfortunately, it’s not understood by a lot of people. So when someone is going through grief … A lot of times, people will say … ‘It’s just a dog, why don’t you get another one?’ ... So the book is a lot about how you can heal from pet grief.

Shields: Is this the first book you’ve written?

Davy: Yes it is.

Shields: What made you decide to write it?

Davy: Well I think people need the resources. I think that there isn’t a lot of information to help people. And when they feel like they’re all alone and feel strange that they feel this way about an animal, so it’s reason for people to get the book. And for other people to get the book and feel some of the things they’re feeling. And this is something you can overcome.

And particularly the strangeness of it. Because, you know what, people nowadays feel bound to their animals. … You can hear it in the language of society because people will use terms like “pet parent” or people will refer to their dog as their soul mate or refer to their cats or dogs as their kids. People have a way of talking about them that didn’t exist 20 years ago, or even 10 years ago. There’s a lot of reasons for that. But one reason is animals are always supportive, and people aren’t always necessarily. And animals are always happy to see you and the relationship is uncomplicated. They don’t hold grudges. It’s a really important

So when a person is in that situation, that’s when the pet grief is the worst.

Shields: How has the response been to the book so far?

Davy: It’s good, however, nowadays, when you write a book, you really have to market it and publicize it yourself. So I’ve been asking people to please put it on their Facebook [page] because that’s one of the best ways to sell books. … If people put it on their Facebook [page] other people know about it and can find it. A book can be as wonderful as can be, but if nobody can find it, then it doesn’t get anywhere. So my main work right now is letting people know the book is there.

Shields: Do you have plans for any additional books?

Davy: You know, I probably will write more books in the nonfiction area that have to do with the self-help category. And I’m also interested in writing fiction, too. There are more books that I have in my mind and I really enjoyed writing this book. I felt when I was writing this book that I was really giving a voice to a lot of people.

Nonprofit to help keep senior services going As a member of the 50plus category, I can say my perspective about aging has dramatically shifted as each decade has passed me by.

Looking around me, I am constantly inspired by those who are older than me, who live life with tremendous passion and energy. Those lively examples are one of the many reasons I am excited about the newly formed nonprofit, Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens.

Downers Grove Township has always been about serving more than 146,000 residents, no matter the age. We are all getting older. Of all of the townships in DuPage County, our township has the second highest percentage of residents ages 65 and older. Knowing the percentage will continue to grow, we want to make sure we are able to not only sustain services for those individuals but also have the capacity to address other needs. That vision is one of the reasons that the township sought to create this nonprofit, giving us the ability to reach into the community and partner with others who share a similar vision and passion for serving seniors.

We are proud of those members of the community who have gladly joined our organization, stepping into a variety of roles to support the mission of Friends for Downers Grove Township Senior Citizens. As the organization continues to grow, we will make more and more connections with communi-

Heroin’s deadly reign affects us all It’s easy to think of heroin addiction as something that happens to other people, other families. Especially if you and your children have made it through the teen years and early adulthood without coming under the thumb of addiction.

But even if no one in your immediate circle had even tried heroin, it still affects you in ways that are almost impossible to see. Maybe your favorite cashier at the grocery store just isn’t there one day, and you never know why. Maybe a local business you frequent shuts down out of the blue. Maybe a friend or a colleague becomes distant for no apparent reason, no longer hosts gatherings, no longer talks with pride about what the kids are doing.

Cook and DuPage counties have seen a decline in heroin-related deaths thanks to the use of Narcan to combat overdoses. From 46 deaths in 2013, to 33 last year, DuPage County is on track for about 27 this year. Cook County’s drop was less significant, from 275 in 2013 to 283 in 2014.

Regardless, if those declines are because of the success of Narcan, then it means that

I’m not looking to incite fear or convince every parent that their child is a secret dope fiend. Far from it. The miracle is that most teens, knowing full well how they could get their hands on some truly toxic substances, choose not to do so at a time in their life when they’ve got all kinds of pressures pushing them to make bad decisions.

These are just a few of the obvious ways that heroin abuse continues to affect all

of us. And it’s going to continue to do so for a long time.

Dog owner’s view on pee problem One, yes, many dogs can go 8 to 12 hours without going outside. Two, dogs relieving themselves don’t do anything to the grass. I walk my dog at Ebersold Park in Downers Grove and I estimate 30 to 40 other people walk their dogs there daily. I challenge anyone to find a single spot in the park where the grass has been affected by a dog relieving itself. ‌ Three, people walk their dogs to provide exercise for their dogs. A typical backyard is not an adequate exercise area for most dogs. Personally, I think someone should not own a dog unless they are committed to providing daily exercise. Four, the suggestion was made to call the police to issue a ticket if a dog steps on your grass.

The police have more important things to do than respond to this type of nuisance call. Someone doing this could easily get the reputation as the neighborhood pest.

LETTERS Standing up in defense of bicyclists on the roadways

To the editor: [Recently] someone kindly asked in the Sound Off section why many people ride bicycles on the roads, getting in the way of motorists instead of riding only on designated bike paths.

Well, first let’s mention the most obvious, bicyclists have as much legal right to use the roads as any motorist. They

also share the same responsibilities as motorists.

Second, telling a cyclist to only ride on a designated bike path would be like telling a motorist to only drive the alley routes. They don’t always take you where you want to go.

Third, bike paths are wonderful to ride on for many people, I encourage you to get back on your bike and enjoy them.

You would most likely shake your fist, calling us reckless. So we look for roads less traveled as best we can so there won’t be as much motor traffic getting in our way.

For the most part, you are absolutely correct. If a motorist hits a bicyclist, they are going to be in a big legal mess,

perhaps a moral one, too. The same goes for a bicyclist who hits a pedestrian. The bigger, faster mode of transportation by law owes a greater duty of care to the smaller, slower mode.

Please keep an eye out for bicyclists.

The next one you approach may be someone you care very much about.

Red Stars Remain Unbeaten with 0-0 Draw in Seattle Seattle, Wash. – The NWSL-leading Chicago Red Stars stayed undefeated in their first seven matches of the season courtesy of a hard-fought scoreless draw with home side and Shield holders Seattle Reign FC. Head Coach Rory Dames’ squad earned the valuable point behind disciplined team defending and a strong performance by netminder Michele Dalton, whose seven saves saw the 26-year-old earn her second shutout of the 2015 campaign.

Seattle controlled possession early on and created the first promising chance in the 13th minute. Reigning league MVP Kim Little sprinted down to the byline on the left side and set up Danielle Foxhoven, whose mishit effort from inside the box found fellow attacker Merritt Mathias. The Alabama native failed to make full contact on the ball, her shot attempt being comfortably stopped by Dalton.

Chicago’s Vanessa DiBernardo released a dangerous drive at the other end of the field in the 20th minute, a wicked deflection forcing goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer to leave her feet for a spectacular parry. On June 10, 2009, Rick married his high school sweetheart, Astrid, on Casey Key in Florida. They met in the high school cafeteria and were inseparable for the past 17 years.

Rick was passionate about spending time with his family and traveling, including a honeymoon trip to Costa Rica. Children adored “Uncle Ricky”.

Rick also loved martial arts, snowboarding, weight lifting, video games, calligraphy and cars. He adored all dogs, but in particular, his puppies Kaizer and Shawna.

Rick worked for the past 7 years for the Englewood Fire Department and was a loyal member of the IAFF 2546 Local Firefighters' Union. He received many Certificates and Commendations related to his selfless care of others while on duty. This included the Life Saver Award and numerous Unit Citations from his Fire Department. He held multiple state and national certificates as well.

Rick enjoyed and excelled in Disc Golf. He was an active member of the Professional Disc Golf Association as an Ace Club Member and a Birdie Club Member. His national player ranking was 927. He won several disc golf tournaments.

He was a member of Team Ching, a local disc golf team, and the Southwest Florida Disc Golf Association.

A Celebration of Life service was held at Englewood Event Center (3096 S McCall Rd, Englewood, FL 34224) on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

During my next visit, I decided I wanted to put my red meat cravings on the backseat for the sake of vegetarian readers, and ordered the veggie burger topped with avocado and tomato.

Back Alley got points straight away for the clearly house-made patty instead of

the frozen black bean affair found in many places. It had a whole lot of mildly spicy complexity to it, but could have used more sear.

I decided to go with the classic onion rings as my side this go-round, and, predictably, they were battered perfectly. Each had a uniform

amount of tasty breading with a nice crunch and plenty of welcome onion flavor.

I knew I needed to sample one of the restaurant’s handspun shakes to truly tell the full story. The Nutella version was intensely chocolate and dangerously drinkable as opposed to milk shakes the

A lot of places do a decent burger, and a lot try to push the envelope of what a burger can be. Back Alley definitely does so with success, along with a friendly waitstaff quick to offer a suggestion, and a welcoming interior with rockand-roll appeal.

If you’re going to put your burger fate in the hands of anyone, the people at Back Alley should be near the top of the list.

LA GRANGE – Grilling season is here, but consider leaving the burger production to the pros at Back Alley Burger in La Grange.

The restaurant is the creation of veteran restaurateurs Mary and Christopher Spagnola of Western Springs, who first met at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco. Their training is a big part of what sets Back Alley Burger apart, and their concept has expanded to a second location in Elmhurst.

The pair’s hard-rocking La Grange restaurant has a big but focused menu offering a number of different burgers featuring grass-fed and never frozen beef, plus sandwiches, chili, nitrate-free hot dogs, salads, shakes, beer and wine, all served alongside street art decor and classic rock tunes.

Inventive burger toppings and a theme alone do not a quality restaurant make, but, luckily, Back Alley Burger delivers.

Though my imagination was caught by the Most Insane-est Hottest Burger Ever-est, filled with such ingredients as habanero jam, fried jalapeños, Thai chili cream cheese and something called Trinidad scorpion sauce, I decided to go with the less threatening Make Shroom for Me Burger.

What came out was truly delicious. The patty itself was incredibly juicy without being greasy, and the pretzel bun it came on gave just enough structure to make sure the second half of the burger wasn’t soggy. Though it could have used a bit more of the namesake mushrooms, the grilled onions on top added an appreciated bite to the sandwich.

A surprise was the caliber of the sweet potato fries. So many restaurants make a tremendous burger, but serve a pile of over-salted greasy fries alongside it. These were some of the best I’ve ever had.

The thin fries had an amazing crispness to them that still had a mind-boggling amount of creamy sweet potato in the middle.

Mustangs, Trojans both claim baseball regionals Mustangs did the same, but the significance of winning the program’s third straight regional title was not wasted.

“It feels great,” Jones said.

“Obviously I’m excited and I’m sure everyone else is excited.”

“You can say whatever you want about your schedule, but it’s hard to go out there day in and day out and year in and year out and win,” Orel said.

The Downers Grove South senior got the starting nod in the regional final game against Yorkville on May 30. He finally got the win on June 1 as the Mustangs earned a 1-0 victory at the Class 4A Hinsdale South regional after rain suspended the game for two days.

“Coming off the delay from after going two innings I was a little bit nervous to go back in only two days later, but obviously it went well for me and the team,” Jones said.

Jones worked out of firstand-third jams in the fourth and sixth innings June 1, and the Mustangs (29-5) scored in the bottom half of the fourth.

Danny Oriente singled, stole second, went to third on Ryan Taylor’s groundout and scored on Zack Radde’s sacrifice fly. Oriente’s hit was one of just a pair South had in the game. Joe Engel singled to start the sixth and was left stranded.

While Jones was sharp on the mound, the defense behind him was just as solid. Taylor started an inning-ending, fivefour-three double play in the fifth, and he raced in an made a diving catch on a sacrifice bunt attempt in the seventh.

“Zack was so tough today, and our defense, too,” South head coach Darren Orel said.

“The combination of our defense and Zack on the mound was the difference, because [Yorkville] played an outstanding game.”

Jones had confidence he could make the one run stand up, and was confident Peter Hamot could close it out on the mound in the seventh.

North swept Central in a West Suburban Silver series in the regular season in three games decided by a total of five runs, but the playoff game was a lopsided affair. North led 2-0 after an inning before an eight-run fifth inning ended the game.

Brendan Shanahan had two RBIs and scored two runs against Central. Dallton Baran doubled, scored a run and had two RBIs while Jack Warwick tripled, scored twice and drove in one run.

Myles Farley, Brett Pyburn, Pat Geraghty and Ben Carlson each plated one run to help make a winner of Nic Laio, who yielded just two hits and struck out six during five innings on the mound.

BOLINGBROOK – After not pitching for two weeks because of injury, Downers Grove South lefty Caroline Hedgcock received a nice welcome back present from her teammates Monday – a big early lead.

The Mustangs (34-1) struck for four runs in the first inning of their Class 4A regional title game against host Bolingbrook, then survived an unusually ragged seventh inning to win 6-3 and earn their fifth regional title in the past six years.

“I’ve been pitching for a long time, so it was just getting back to the fundamentals,” said Hedgcock, who tossed a complete-game three-hitter with eight strikeouts to improve to 14-0 on the season.

“My changeup was working early, and I felt really confident in all my pitches. And I had great offense behind me. My team really helped me out over the first four innings and made me feel really confident.”

A Kristen Bialek walk and RBI double by Kristin Lea began the first inning. Lea later scored on a wild pitch, then singles by Zahrya McFarland and Nicole Bowman and a two-out, two-run throwing error by Bolingbrook on a Rebekah Ondracek grounder widened the lead to 4-0.

“We got four early runs off a good pitcher [Western Illinois bound Megan

Lotarski], so that was nice,” Mustangs’ coach Ron Havelka said. “They made some mistakes and we took advantage of them.”

Two-out RBI triples by Hedgcock (second inning) and McFarland (fourth inning) made it 6-0.

McFarland (2 for 3) led Downers South’s six-hit attack, as all but one Mustang hitter reached base in the game.

“Everybody sees the ball well and we pick each other up,” McFarland said. “We have really good chemistry on and off the field, and that helps a lot.”

Five Bolingbrook errors led to four unearned runs off Lotarski, but the Mustangs had their own glove struggles.

“We made four errors, which is very uncharacteristic,” Havelka said.

“We have to clean things up there a lot.”

Errors in each of the last two innings led to three Bolingbrook runs, including a two-run, seventh-inning rally that Hedgcock cut short with a game-ending tap back to the mound.

The No. 1 seeded Mustangs hosted Plainfield East in the sectional semifinals June 2.

The winner advanced to the sectional finals at Downers South on June 6.

“I think we’re really prepared to keep getting better,” Hedgcock said.

“I’m really excited for the postseason.

It’s what we live for.”

“We want to be up for each game because we know what each one means,” McFarland said. “We’re going to play as a team and see where it takes us. I think we can go very far.”

By MATT LE CREN editorial@mysuburbanlife.com PLAINFIELD – Downers Grove North senior pitcher Megan Ramsden had the unenviable task of following in the footsteps of Dale Ryndak.

Ryndak was the 2014 Gatorade Illinois Player of the Year who guided Downers Grove North to a regional title last season before moving on to Arizona State.

Ramsden might not have the pitching prowess of Ryndak, but she and her teammates still did their school proud. The Trojans’ quest for a third consecutive regional championship ended with Monday’s 5-0 loss against host Plainfield East in a Class 4A regional final, but they still managed to

win 25 games.

“Our program is definitely a strong program, and after the first week of practice, I knew we were going to be a force to be reckoned with this year because every single girl on this team has so much heart and so much love for the game,” Ramsden said. “And you can tell when they play.”

Ramsden did her part, going 17-4 in the pitching circle. She allowed only one earned run against the Bengals (22-10), that being a home run by Grace Cowan in the top of the second inning.

Plainfield East added an unearned run in the fifth and three more off Ramsden and reliever Savannah Rodriguez in the seventh.

“They were a really good team and

they came out here ready to play,” said Ramsden, who walked one and struck out four. “We put everything we had into the game but it just didn’t go our way today.”

Plainfield East pitcher Bianca Vozenilek was a big reason why. The sophomore hurled a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and no walks.

Zoe Varsbergs had the only extra-base hit for Downers North, a oneout double in the first, but she was stranded.

The Trojans (25-7) had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with one out in the fourth but failed to score and also left two runners on in the sixth.

Despite the loss, Downers North coach Eric Landschoot was pleased

with his team’s season.

“Part of being a good program is to keep rebuilding every year,” Landschoot said. “Sure, you may not have the Gatorade Player of the Year every year, but you find a way to win games with the talent you have.

“It was just a really great group of kids to coach and it makes my job easy when you have a group of girls like that.”

Ramsden, who will not play in college, will savor the memories of her final season.

“This year was so unbelievable,” Ramsden said. “Every single person on this team stepped up and did their job and contributed. We just had so much success because of the camaraderie between everyone.”

DGS musters 4 all-state finishes

The Mustangs may not have matched the 29 team points scored, the fourth-place team finish or number of matches won in 2014, but the 2015 state tourney was still a success.

“We had our best Thursday ever,” head coach Pete Freischlag said of the first day of the tourney May 28. “We went 9-0 and all four guys were still in the main draw.”

Singles players Tony Leto and Christian San Andres, as well as the doubles team of Lawrence Hiquiana and Zach Wood, all won their first three matches at state.

Leto, already battling through illness just to play at state, ran into No. 2 singles seed Gianni Ross of Lyons Township in the fourth round. San Andres met No. 4 seed Alex Ross from LT in the fourth round, and Hiquiana and Wood met Miguel Perez and David Zakhodin, the top-seeded doubles team, in the fourth round.

Gianni Ross and the Perez-Zakhodin tandem finished second in the state, and Alex Ross was third.

“We weren’t sure if Leto was going to play [at state],” Freischlag said. “He didn’t finish the sectional. He was sick and he still won four matches.”

After his initial loss, Leto won a three-set match in the consolation bracket. San Andres pushed Alex Ross in a three-set match that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, according to Freischlag.

Clevenger, Kersting nab medals at state track meet

By SCOTT SCHMID sschmid@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – Ryan Clevenger said his coach accurately predicted how the Class 3A 1,600-meter run would play out at the IHSA state meet May 30.

And after the dust had settled from the fast-paced race, the Downers Grove North senior had added another allstate medal to his collection with a fourth-place finish.

“My coach told me the exact way it would go,” Clevenger said after crossing the line in 4:11.22. “It felt very fast, after two and a half laps, it felt like I was finishing the race.

“I wanted to win but that’s fine. I’ll take fourth with a fast time any day.”

A year ago, he finished third in the same event, swapping places with Conant’s Zach Dale.

“I love the crowd here,” he said. “Everyone is hyped up for the meet, it’s a great experience.”

Another great experience is up ahead as Clevenger is headed to Wisconsin to continue his cross country and track careers.

“I’ve tried not to think

about that,” the senior said, “because I was focused on my senior year and finishing it off right. But I’m very happy to be going there, it’s an honor going to that school.”

Alec Danner ran in the finals of the 3,200 run and clocked a 9:41.18. Zach Hogan jumped 44 feet, 6.5 inches in the triple jump preliminaries and Nick Janicki recorded a 151-6 in the discus prelims.

Downers Grove South

The finals of the 110-meter hurdles were kind to Nick Kersting. The Downers Grove South senior finished sixth with a time of 14.75 seconds, earning an all-state medal in what was his final high school race May 30.

Kersting clocked a 14.54 in the preliminaries to earn the ninth and final spot in the finals, but improved his standing in the finals.

The Mustangs’ Jack LaLonde also ran on the second day of the state meet May 30, clocking a 9:53.15 in the 3,200 run.

Josh Jones recorded a mark of 44 feet, 9.75 inches in the triple jump prelims while Nick Mitchell threw 146 feet in the discus prelims.
