crowd-favorite tool, the chainsaw, often used by the sculptor along with a dremel. The saw is a change of pace for artist Al Ramirez who has carved for Nadeau for about eight years. On his own time, Ramirez makes large, intricate drawings that can take days to create in his Pilsen studio. It’s quite the opposite when he comes to work with power tools. “I really like how fast it is,” he said. “You can knock out an ice sculpture in an hour. You’re working at the speed of the chain saw.”

How they make the ice Nadeau said they use the clearest water they can buy to ensure the ice is clear, similar in quality to a bottled spring water. The water is frozen in 300-pound tanks at 22 degrees, the entire time agitators move the water around to force out air. Then an electric hoist lifts the blocks from the tanks using steel clips frozen just a half-inch into the ice. Each block takes four days to freeze. The business has 45 tanks, staggered to make about 90 blocks a week.

DOWNERS GROVE – Jim Nadeau and his team will sculpt nearly anything a client can dream, from a 100-footlong train filled with cookies for Nabisco, to Michelangelo’s “David” used in the film “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” But, like a gourmet meal, the opportunity to marvel is fleeting, and in a matter of hours the ice sculptures are gone forever. “It’s art for the moment. I know it’s going to disappear,” he said. “It’s planned obsolescence.” Nadeau learned the skill while working as a line cook in the early 1970s. Nadeau kept at it, and in 1980, he left his job with Marriott Hotels to start what might be the first ice sculpting business in the country, Nadeau Ice Sculptures, based in Forest Park. “They told me I was nuts because, at that point, there were no ice carving companies in the U.S.,” he said. “That was 34 years ago, and we’re still doing it.” This weekend, Nadeau and his staff hauled dozens of 300-pound blocks of ice to the annual Downtown Downers Grove Ice Festival. The 40 Winter Olympics-themed sculptures gracing Main Street businesses were the work of his team, as were the live ice sculpting demonstrations each day of the festival. The art of ice sculpting has come along way from hand chisels. Nadeau Ice Sculptures can cut pieces at the shop using computer designs paired with an automated drill called a CNC machine, typically used to make exact corporate logos out of ice for events. Snow budget quickly evaporating By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Village of Downers Grove has already spent almost 70 percent of its snow removal budget this year following the unusually cold weather and heavy snow throughout January. Village Finance Director Judy Buttny and Village Manager David Fieldman presented the information during Tuesday night’s regular village council meeting. The village spent $438,000 of the 2014 snow removal budget of $637,000 in January, according to Buttny. She said in a normal winter, the village would have spent about $191,360 in January. Last year, the January figure was $82,057, and it was $134,789 in 2012. “We wanted to alert the community to this issue,” Fieldman said. “Because clearly like other towns, we have been expending a lot of resources in response to the weather and the road conditions.”

Snow removal accounts for about 1.5 percent of the total general fund budget of about $43.6 million. “While this is a high-profile service, there are many other services provided in the general fund,” Buttny said. Fieldman said the village, along with other communities, have had some equipment break down from the near constant use this year. “The public works department has driven 60,000 miles since Dec. 1 on snow and ice control, if that puts a little perspective on it,” he said. “So the wear and tear has been noticeable.” Fieldman said the village typically expects to expend about 30 percent of its yearly snow removal budget in January, 30 percent in February, less in March and December, and a very small amount in November. Fieldman added the village has been monitoring the salt supply. Staff did not present cur-

rent salt usage figures. Fieldman did say the village has only had to go into “conservation mode” with salt on two days so far this winter. “There is some regional salt supply issues due to supply chain issues and plain old demand,” he said. Council members referenced other communities that have run out of salt, according to media reports, and have had to resort to sand or other materials for traction. “So far I think we’re doing a terrific job in managing this pretty well, and I know you’ll continue to do that,” Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said in response to the staff report. “But there may have to be some periodic adjustments here and there to make sure that management continues in the best possible fashion. “And I think that’s what everyone needs to understand, is that sometimes extreme situations require a little bit of flexibility.”

Mayor talks flooding, finances in annual report By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – Paraphrasing the traditional State of the Union line in his 2013 annual report Feb. 4, Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully said, “The state of our village is both strong and on a path of sustained success.” Tully summarized the village’s finances along with the big village news stories of the year, from the implementation of the new stormwater fee and the April floods to new business openings. Tully pointed toward Standard & Poor’s upgrading last year of the village’s bond rating to the highest possible, AAA, as an independent confirmation of sound village finances. “This distinction places our community among the elite communities in our na-

tion,” he said, adding that the village is one of only 23 in Illinois with the rating. He said the rating has allowed the village to refinance bonds at lower rates, saving money in debt repayments for previous projects downtown and at the library. Touting a healthier village general fund, Tully said it saw revenues increase and expenses decrease to create a positive balance shift of $820,000 in 2013 over the previous year. He also took time to address the April flood that damaged more than 1,500 properties. The village government received $100,000 from FEMA to help cover some flood costs, he said, and 522 Downers Grove residents received a total of $1.6 million from the agency. “So that was something

Developers plan 6-story apartment building near downtown By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove Plan Commission gave the OK last week to a six-story apartment building planned for the corner of Rogers Street and Prospect Avenue. The commission voted 7-1 Feb. 3 to recommend a special use allowing developers to build a multiple-family residence in an area zoned as downtown transition. Multiple family residences are an allowable use for that zoning classification.

The special use will go before the village council for a vote at a future meeting. The $11 million project, located between the Main Street and Fairview train depots, would include two floors of parking with 98 spots. Above that would be four levels of one- and two-bedroom apartments, for a total of 48. Because of the sloping geography of the site, the first floor-and-a-half would be partially built into the ground. Michael Gatto, vice president of the developer, RMG Realty, said the upscale building

will be marketed to young, professional commuters looking for housing in the downtown Downers Grove area, something he believes is currently missing. “We have a lot of condo buildings and lot of townhouses, but we don’t have nice forrent apartment buildings that are a high-enough caliber to attract a young professional,” he said. “We really saw an opportunity to create a product that will fill the void in the marketplace.” He said the likely price point will be $1,400/month for one bedrooms and $2,000 for

two bedrooms. Each apartment will feature hardwood flooring, stainless steel appliances and granite counter tops, a covered balcony and a washer and dryer. The building also would feature a rooftop garden patio. Plan Commission Chairwoman Anastasia Urban said developers answered questions regarding security, maintenance, loading and other concerns, including building height. “I think the plan commission had a very good deliberation about a variety of potential concerns and the petitioners

responded to the majority of those concerns,” she said. The project plans comply with all setbacks, height and parking requirements, she said. The proposed structure would be 58.29 feet tall, according to the application, falling under the 60-foot maximum height allowed in the area. “We very specifically designed the building to be 100 percent in compliance with zoning district standards,” said Ken Rathje, a consultant

Downers Grove to host rain garden workshop, virtual rain garden tour SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA DOWNERS GROVE – The Village of Downers Grove and the Conservation Foundation are teaming up to provide information to residents about the benefits of installing a rain gar-

den on their property. Jim Kleinwachter from the Conservation Foundation will discuss in detail the steps to install a rain garden at home, from planning the project to planting. Local organizations also will be on hand to discuss

environmentally sustainable projects they have completed. The workshop is at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Village Hall. Exhibit space will be open before and after the presentations. The village also is hosting a “Virtual Rain Garden Walk.”

BABY’S FIRST VISIT Q: When should a child first visit a dentist? A: As a rule, a child should see a dentist by age one, or within six months of the first tooth’s eruption. Some parents put little thought into the care of so-called ‘baby teeth’ because they’re going to fall out anyway. The fact is, baby teeth are important in many ways, including their role as place holders for the permanent teeth. On the first visit, the dentist will examine the child’s mouth, teeth and gums and explain to the parents how to effectively keep the area clean. He also may have some nutrition tips. The dentist will also be able to evaluate the impact of any habits the child may have developed, like thumb sucking. Tooth decay can develop any time after your baby’s teeth appear. By his first birthday, your baby could have eight or more baby teeth. And if one of them is causing pain, he or she won’t be able to communicate that fact. Another consideration in favor of the early visit to the dentist is the opportunity to start a good relationship between the doctor and the patient. The dentist, based on his or her examination, will be able to recommend a schedule for future visits. As with any medical issue, the earlier any sort of dental problem is recognized in your child, the easier it will be to correct it. Talk with your own dentist about the best steps to take with your infant.

Helping with special transition to adulthood For more than 15 years, District 99 proudly has offered continued educational services to hundreds of students through our Transition 99 Program. Transition 99 serves older students between ages 18 and 22 who have cognitive and other health impairments. Instructors focus on teaching vital life and work skills to equip these young people with the foundation they need to grow – and to become productive adults in our community. Transition 99 students are special and require a special space in which to learn. In fact, best practices in special COMMUNITY education include providVOICE ing a learning space in the Jim community for transition-age Kolodziej students. On Jan. 21, District 99 opened its doors to anewly rehabbed, dedicated space for this program at 4232 Venard Road in Downers Grove. The 10,000-square-foot facility is equipped with a vocational work room (to house the program’s shredding business), laundry facilities, four classrooms, a living area, a conference room and office, a kitchen and bathrooms, including a shower. It includes everything a student needs to practice independent living. Before we purchased the Venard property, we contacted architects to see if the estimated development costs were economically feasible. After the financial analysis, we found that without a doubt, the property was ideal. The district would be able to support the facility cost and construction out of existing funds – and without raising taxes. The District 99 Board of Education recognized the opportunity and unanimously approved moving forward with the purchase for the new, permanent site. When we purchased the property less than a year ago, it was an empty shell. Staff members planned and worked closely with our parents, architects, construction professionals, the village of Downers Grove and the Downers Grove Fire Department in a true community effort to transform the space. All of the operational, technology, water, sewer and safety systems were designed from scratch and installed. Walls were put up and painted we put down tile and carpet. We’ve experienced a flurry of construction activity since November, and the project came in on budget and on time. The facility has been transformed by our redesign and construction, but more importantly, we believe the space will transform our students into the contributing members of society they are destined to become.

Last week, we told you how proud District 99 and its special needs students are of their new, $1.8 million Transition Center. They certainly should be proud. The center teaches the district’s 45 or so special needs students invaluable life and job skills, preparing them for the transition into life after high school. District 99 student-artists recently claimed more than 200 awards in a variety of art and writing categories from the 2014 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition. North High will host the Chicago area regional exhibition that will feature the winning pieces this week.

I just read in Suburban Life this week about the Downers Grove disposal program for drugs, which is wonderful. I just want people to be aware of the fact that, and I am a Downers Grove residence, for years at the Lisle police station, you’ve been able to walk in and put your drugs in a box without making an appointment and sometimes that may be more convenient. So anyhow, I just want everybody to know about it. I think it’s wonderful Downers Grove is finally offering this program. But I think it would be easier for a lot of people if they don’t have to make an appointment, they can just drop their drugs off, which I’ve been doing for years.

LISLE – Benedictine University will play host to the final debate before the 2014 primary featuring the Republican candidates running for governor. The university has invited the four candidates – state Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, state Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale, state Treasurer Dan Rutherford and Bruce Rauner – who are vying to run against incumbent Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn in November. Brady, Dillard and Rutherford have committed to attend the debate, while Rauner has not yet responded, according to the university. The debate will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. March 6 at the Dan and Ada Rice Center on the university’s main campus in Lisle. kpedicini@shawmedia.com WOODRIDGE – When Samuel Tavolino ran up the stairs to see his new bedroom last week, the only sound to be heard was the 6-year-old’s screams of, “Awesome!” With red and blue walls, a hand-painted cartoon jet, helicopter and Captain America adventure scene, the Woodridge boy looked on at his newly renovated bedroom with true awe. The dream bedroom was created by Special Spaces Chicagoland, a nonprofit group that designs and constructs bedrooms for children fighting critical illnesses. Samuel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2012. For his mother, Donna Tavolino, seeing a smile on the face of her son warmed her heart. “It’s bittersweet,” she said. “It stinks that we’re in this position in the first place but then you find all these people who have so much good in their hearts and who are willing to do things for you and your family.” One morning almost two years ago, Samuel woke up sick. His mother thought it was a sinus infection but the next day he was diagnosed with leukemia. After 30 days of rigorous chemotherapy, Samuel was declared in remission. He still is but has about another year of treatment left. “The first year was horrible but now he gets the same [treatment] regime,” Donna Tavolino said. “He’s a tough kid. He never complains and never cries. He’s a very special kid.” The bedroom remodel is the 14th room makeover for the Naperville-based Special Spaces Chicagoland, according to Kelly Knox, branch founder. She said the organization usually creates one bedroom a month, adding that they’re already booked for all of 2014 and have a wait list for 2015.

For each room design, Knox finds a sponsor – Coldwell Banker in Samuel’s case – and then begins the eight-week process, she said, adding that most rooms take about 10 to 12 hours to complete. “This is so gratifying every day ... it’s absolutely amazing,” Knox said. “This is the best feeling in the whole world.” Special Spaces Chicagoland also works with From One Kid 2 Another – a Naperville-based charity started by Knox’s neighbors, Peggy and Kelly Chinn. For Samuel’s reveal, From One Kid 2 Another provided new toys for him, his 8-yearold brother, Tristin, and his 4-year-old sister, Sabrina, courtesy of Imaginext Toys. About five hospitals from the area reach out to Special Spaces, along with family members, friends and neighbors with children in need, according to Knox. “Every child who’s sick deserves some happiness and that’s what we’re doing,” Knox said.

Once a child is chosen, a team from Special Spaces interviews the child to get an understanding of his or her favorite colors, themes and wishes. At the room reveal last week, Donna Tavolino said Samuel’s new room is “absolutely perfect.” “[Special Spaces] is one amazing charity that does amazing things,” she said, adding that she and her husband Mark hope to become more involved with the organization in the future. Seeing her son excited and happy during the reveal was all that mattered, according to Donna Tavolino. “He’s ecstatic,” she said. “And 10 minutes of happiness for him to forget what he has to go through is absolutely priceless.” While the family will never be worry free, she said once the treatment is over, there’s a 90 percent chance it won’t come back. “Samuel’s gone through more in life than I ever have,” the mother said. “…No kid should have to go through this.”

Thai Pot stirs affection for traditional cuisine DOWNERS GROVE – Thai fare has become more commonplace over the years, and, like many other adopted cuisines, often more Americanized. Breading, cream, sugary sauces and less traditional spices frequently are incorporated. Thai Pot seems to resist that temptation, offering authentic flavors and food, to good result. During my first visit to the restaurant, I stopped by for lunch. Tucked into a strip mall in Downers Grove, the storefront eatery has a bright, appealingly decorated interior. The full menu is not available midday, when the restaurant focuses on a selection of weekday lunch specials, which are fairly diverse and very well priced. For just under $8, you get soup, the appetizer of the day and a well-portioned entree. The meal started with a simple yet delicious chicken and jasmine rice soup. It reminded me of my mom’s best chicken noodle, but the jasmine and a smattering of other Thai spices gave it an extra layer of savory that really set it apart. All the components were cooked well, and the broth had an almost buttery texture. The aromatic fish sauce and spices in the red curry with tofu, which usually are muted by lots of coconut sauce, wafted my way as the server approached the table. The emphasis was on the spicy chili sauce in the curry, a dish overflowing with veggies and tofu. The tofu itself melted in my

mouth. It was boiled, not fried, giving it an eggy texture. After the satisfying lunch, I was curious to check out the full menu, and followed up another day with a dinner visit. I started with an order of Shrimp Cigars – admittedly chosen because of the great name. They were big plump shrimp, tail-on, alongside Thai basil and a bit of onion, all wrapped and fried in a wonton wrapper. The visual was a great one, and the presentation allowed the shrimp to stay the star. My entree of spicy basil leaves with chicken had a great blend of flavors, particularly the sauce. It contained just enough basil to add a nice punch. I would have liked even more of the gravy, simply because it was so good. Thai Pot’s greatest strength is its commitment to authenticity. Thai is one of my favorite cuisines – I love the Americanized versions just as much as I love the ones straight from the recipes of Thai grandmothers – and Thai Pot managed to throw in a couple flavors I hadn’t experienced before. Diners who would like to push their boundaries a bit, or those who already relish the more traditional flavors, will want to find out what’s cooking at Thai Pot.

But Downers Grove North closed the first quarter on a 10-3 run to cut the deficit to single digits. In the second quarter, the Mustangs nailed 3-of-7 from 3-point range, carrying a 33-22 lead into halftime. For the game, Downers Grove South knocked down 11 shots from long distance, compared to five Downers Grove North 3-pointers.

“We wanted to play at our pace tonight,” Olsen said. “We wanted to play fast and uptempo. When we are able to execute that, it creates offense for our shooters. “North came out on us and pressured us in the second half so we started slashing to the basket and being more selective with our 3-point shots.” The Mustangs opened a 48-28 lead in the third quarter and, in spite of a game-high 24 points from Trojans’ forward Devin Blake, Downers Grove North could not complete its comeback bid.

Why Rugienius was selected Rugienius scored 17 points in Saturday’s crosstown clash, leading the Mustangs to a 68-55 victory against Downers Grove North. What was the game plan when facing a bigger Downers Grove North team? I try to play the same way every game. Coming in, we knew they were a bigger team, so I wanted to use my quickness and outside shooting ability to my advantage.

What does it mean to get this win at home over your rival? It’s a huge win. We always love to beat our rivals. It’s good for the fans, too. There is always a lot of hype going into these games, so it’s nice to protect home court and generate some momentum going toward the playoffs.

We just need to play our game and execute. With five games left in the regular season, we can’t get caught looking ahead to the playoffs. We just want to finish the season strong and get better with every game.

A 53-43 win Friday over Lyons Township combined with Hinsdale Central’s victory against Proviso West on Feb. 4 gave the Trojans their first outright conference championship in school history.
