She opened the business with her fiance George Emmerich and her dad Robert Davis, a Bellwood firefighter. Lucky for Davis, her father also has a keen interest in animals. Growing up, he always had German shepherds and Dalmatians around the house, along with cats and hamsters. Her father “always wanted to open a groom shop when he retired,” she said. “So when he said let’s do it, I said ‘Yes! It’s my dream.’”

After working in several grooming shops in the area, Davis had a good idea of exactly what she wanted in their new, customized store. “They can get anything from just a nail trim, to a bath and brush,” she said. “My favorite is when they bring a long-haired cat in and they want you to turn it into a lion, with a mane and a little puff on their tail. It’s so cute.” The business also offers teeth cleaning. “A lot of people don’t understand the importance of dental health,” she said. “It can significantly improve their health overall.” DOWNERS G ROVE

DOWNERS GROVE – Gloria Davis knew she wanted to work with animals since she was a little kid. But after working at a veterinary clinic, she realized seeing animals in pain might not be the best avenue for her passion. “It can be pretty hard and pretty depressing,” the Downers Grove 27-year-old said. “But I still wanted to help them, and with grooming you can help their teeth and their health. “If I can groom them and wash them, and take care of

them and make them feel better, and they’re happy at the end, that’s everything to me.” After years of working in pet salons, Davis and her family opened their own this fall, GiGi’s Pet Salon at 1913 Ogden Ave. The moniker comes from a nickname her parents had for Davis when she was little, she said. She doesn’t work at shelters or veterinary clinics any longer, but her business’ location next door to the Western Suburban Humane Society offers her more opportunity to help animals, she said. Last week, Davis planned to meet with

DOWNERS GROVE – Gov. Pat Quinn joined retired astronaut Capt. James A. Lovell, Jr. for a reenactment of Lovell’s famous 1968 “Christmas Eve Broadcast to Earth” on Monday, and the two got a little help from Downers Grove North High School. DGN student Mary Doro and the father of student Anne Wagner joined the governor and astronaut in voicing the reenactment in front of Lovell’s Apollo 8 capsule at the Museum of Science and Industry. Doro and Wagner were called the “heroes of Downers Grove North” by the governor on Oct. 15, the day Quinn pronounced as “Downers Grove North High School Day in Illinois” in honor of Anne Wagner’s bravery and her classmates’ passion to honor her. At the re-enactment, the

nior year, her friend – Doro – and other classmates launched a successful social networking drive to elect her 2013 Homecoming Queen. During the reenactment, Doro read the part of Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders, and Anne Wagner’s father read the role of Commander Frank Borman. Lovell – who has family ties in Illinois – has joined Quinn in the past to promote the Illinois Military Family Relief Fund. Mayor Tully looks ahead to 2014 By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@mysuburbanlife.com DOWNERS GROVE – If 2013 was defined by flooding and the new fee to pay for stormwater infrastructure improvements, Mayor Martin Tully said the next capital challenge facing Downers Grove will likely be the future of two buildings – village hall and the police station. “It’s no secret, it’s been a high priority for some time that both of these buildings are past their usable condition as they currently exist,” Tully said during an interview with Downers Grove Suburban Life that focused on village priorities and challenges for 2014. “We had some plans a number of years ago to address both of those, and even had recommendations and plans and drawings that were put together by consultants in order to move forward. And then the great recession hit,

to its current use in the 1960s, and the police station are both outdated and expensive to maintain. “It doesn’t have any of the modern accouterments,” he said. “If you’ve been to other village halls, even our chambers aren’t exactly up to snuff with the 21st century, in what people who come to visit government expect to see in terms of their ability to interact with a public body. “Certainly in terms of things like the roof, other systems, HVAC, it’s just old. And the question is, do you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to renovate the place, or do you do something else?” He said the village council hopes to identify a plan, whether it means building a new facility or even a mixeduse building that could house village offices along with other governmental or private space. “We want to come up with a plan in 2014, not that it’ll be implemented in 2014,” he said. A new village hall could also be the focus of economic development efforts, he said. “It’s a pretty sweet location right here,” he said. “But that will come out in the wash in terms of what the plan is for village hall and the police station.” Other areas of interest include University Plaza on Butterfield Road near Downers Drive and the Meadowbrook Shopping Center at 63rd Street and Woodward Avenue. Meadowbrook Shopping Center “has long been on the ‘can we do something better there?’ list,” he said. “And again in conjunction with the Economic Development Corp., we’ve been working with the property owners to see what else might be done there.” Tully said there might be opportunities for “out-lot” developments, which means new restaurants or other standalone business built in the parking lot, or even something more ambitious. “And since we don’t own it, everyone has to be on board with something like that,” he said.

Tully also identified external challenges like those posed by the State of Illinois. “We need to continue to be vigilant of identifying threats to our balance sheet, and those can come in the form of reductions in existing revenue that flows through the state, or through the imposition of new obligations that don’t come with any funding sources – unfunded mandates,” he said. “The one that’s been threatened for some time and wont go away is the challenge to the local government distributive fund, which is our portion … of the state income tax. “There’s been talk back and forth for at least the last two years in Springfield about some kind of a change to that, that could potentially have a major impact upon municipal balance sheets. And, of course, if something like that happens, the result is that the community either needs to eliminate the things that were previously funded with those dollars or need to figure out an alternative source of funding,” he said. “We try to plan for it with various contingencies and I think we’ve done a pretty good job of doing that. My concern is that’s just the one we know of.” Other issues that could come to light in 2014 is the first year of mandatory compliance with the village’s sign ordinance that governs the size and height of commercial signage. He said the council would also like to resolve the fowl ordinance. And, it also could address food trucks, though it’s not high on the council’s priority list, he said. Tully said the village could model its food truck policy on the numerous other cities that have recently allowed the expansion of the trend. “I think that’s something that could be dealt with,” he said. “I wouldn’t bump something else to deal with it. I haven’t perceived any great desire from the rest of the council to bump something else to address that.”

Q: Can you offer any tips on floss and flossing? A: There are a few factors you should be aware of when selecting and using the floss that’s right for you. For the most part, deciding whether to use waxed, unwaxed, flavored or plain floss is a matter of personal preference. Floss is meant as a supplement to--not a replacement for-- your toothbrush. It lets you get into those spaces the brush’s bristles can’t reach. One thing to keep in mind when buying, though, is that if your teeth are set very close together, you’re better off with waxed floss. It is less likely to snag and fray in the narrow space. Whichever type you choose, the method for using floss to its greatest effect remains the same: wind the ends of a piece of floss around your forefingers and pull it taut. Slip the floss between teeth and pull it down to the gum line. Pull the floss into a “C” shape and get it between the tooth and the gum. Then, pressing against the tooth, pull the floss up-or down, depending on which teeth you’re cleaning. You are trying to remove the plaque on the side of the teeth, an area where a brush is less effective. Don’t saw the floss back and forth. Keep unwinding the floss a bit as you go from tooth to tooth so that you are always using a clean section. Dental floss, by the way, has been on the market since 1882. Talk with your dentist about its effective use.

Hollywood film producer returns home into a production office. “Maybe it’s nostalgia,” he said. “Maybe it’s just me looking at it, but that’s part of the filmmaking process. You’re guessing other people are going to find this interesting.” After graduating from Downers Grove North in 1990 and the University of Chicago in ’94, Mallhi headed to the nation’s capital for a short stint working in congressional offices. He quickly realized that career path wasn’t for him, he said, and headed to LA to begin his Hollywood career with no formal film training. His first gigs in LA were unpaid internships. That eventually led to reading submitted scripts for movie studios. “Eventually, you find a script that gets made into a movie, and they make you a producer, and you kind of sink or swim,” he said. Mallhi swam, and now 40, he has been a co-producer on hits like the 2006 time-travel

DOWNERS GROVE – Sonny Mallhi viewed his hometown of Downers Grove through a different lens this fall, and in the process, found inspiration in the everyday street corners and buildings people often take for granted in their youth. The Hollywood film producer and writer shot his debut feature as a director, “Anguish,” in his old stomping grounds this November, filming the village’s neighborhoods, the diner he and his friends would haunt in high school, and the playground at his old grade school, Belle Aire Elementary School. “I’ve made a few movies in [Los Angeles] that are supposed to be middle America or the suburbs of Chicago or whatever, but they just don’t look it,” he said. For the month long shoot, Mallhi recruited a film crew of all Chicago locals and turned his childhood home

Two of Illinois’ biggest and most controversial laws passed in 2013 – concealed carry permits and medicinal marijuana – officially take effect Jan. 1. Illinois State Police will accept online applications to carry a concealed handgun starting Jan. 5 and recently announced the acceptance of paper applications beginning July 1. More than 2,000 registered concealed carry instructors are already listed on the State Police website, said spokesperson Monique Bond, but the first permits won’t be issued until early April. “It could be sooner, but we are going to use the full 90 days to give us enough time to make sure we do it right,” Bond said. In order to obtain a standard five year concealed carry permit, Illinois residents must already have a Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) card, pay a $150 fee, submit to a background check and undergo 16 hours of firearm training with a certified instructor. Applications will be processed by State Police, which will issue or deny the card within 90 days. Denied applications will be reviewed by the governor-appointed Concealed Carry Licensing Board. For similar reasons, medicinal marijuana will not be accessible until well past Jan. 1. Not only will there be a time lapse to process applications for distribution and cultivation centers, said Illinois Department of Public Health spokesperson Melaney Arnold, but government agencies are still determining the specifics of the law’s implementation. “I would like to give a time frame, but there are so many moving pieces,” Arnold said. “We’re working as quickly as we can to get it out.” The Department of Public

Food, water, shelter. We all rely on these basic necessities, but in this day and age, we might add one more to the list: Technology. Our society expects immediate and uninterrupted access to digital information. It’s estimated that more than 2 billion people use the Internet, performing 31 billion searches on Google every month. And with the exponential growth in mobile device use (more than half of U.S. adults now own a smartphone), all of us are accessing more content and are communicating more frequently than ever before. COMMUNITY These stats reinforce the VOICE fact that at District 99, we Rod must continue to adapt in Russeau order to make meaningful, transformational use of technology at our schools. In 2011, we made a major infrastructure upgrade and installed wireless access across the district. Then in 2012, we deployed mobile computers to all teachers and established ourselves as a Google Apps for Education district. The stage is set to challenge ourselves for the next logical step: moving to 1:1 computing. In general, 1:1 means providing each student with a mobile computing device and access to digital tools and curriculum materials. Significant numbers of districts across the country are implementing 1:1 programs, and countless others are determining how to move forward. We are committed to moving forward with 1:1 at District 99. In order for it to be successful, however, we feel it must be completely focused on curricular goals and desired learning outcomes. Student learning plays the starring role at District 99, and it always will. Technology is a mere supporting character, and to be used to transform good teaching into something even better for our students. The next few months will be busy ones as we develop our vision for the role technology plays in student learning. We’ll first define what 1:1 means for us, and the corresponding instructional impact, opportunities and expectations. We’ll talk with our students, teachers, parents and other districts to help guide our planning efforts. After creating a vision, we’ll drill down to more specifics, such as our infrastructure and organizational readiness and which mobile devices offer the best solution in terms of performance, reliability and cost. We at District 99 have always made sure that our teachers have the resources they need to teach and that our students have the resources they need to learn. It has already been forced to go dark for days at a time for technical maintenance. This invokes little confidence that the data hub will be able to keep Americans’ private data safe, making it a goldmine for hackers. Americans deserve a government that is doing everything in its power to keep you safe as it relates to your private information. That’s why the House will not stop its aggressive oversight, will strengthen anti-fraud efforts and demand the Administration put key protections in place in the law. When a person’s private information is exposed, it can cause a ripple effect that impacts their identity, finances, employment and everyday life.

Before its launch on Oct. 1, the health care law’s exchange website repeatedly failed internal tests, crashing with as few as 200 or 300 people on the site. Yet the Obama Administration pushed ahead, launching Healthcare.gov without the most basic end-to-end security tests. At a recent Congressional hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked whether she would shut down Obamacare’s exchange website until all its security risks were addressed. She flatly refused. With the hasty launch of Obamacare, the Obama Administration continues to jeopardize the security of millions of American’s personal information thanks to a vulnerable website built for a structurally flawed program. Just how bad is Healthcare. gov? Security experts warn there are “considerable safety risks” that “hint at deeper vulnerabilities” because of cutting corners on security testing and ignoring industry standards. Just days before the launch, an internal memo warned of “high” security risks, but the head of the agency that created Healthcare.gov signed off on it anyway. Software testers already found several security breaches where hackers can get access to your email and security questions or rig the site to send password-reset information to a third party. Just last week, a North Carolina man tried to log onto the website and got a South Carolina man’s personal information. This isn’t just an illustration of an incompetent launch, it’s

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING Saturday, January 4, 2014 9:00 a.m. to noon The Village and Creative Recycling offers electronics recycling on the first Saturday of every month, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. BUS DRIVERS WANTED The Village of Downers Grove is accepting applications for parttime bus drivers. Minimum Requirements: Requirements include a CDL Class “B” License with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements and a good driving record. Candidates must be at least 21 years old. Starting Wage - $14.44/hour to $17.33/hour with potential to $19.89/hour. Applications are available at the reception desk in the Village Hall. Position is opened until filled. E.O.E.

CURBSIDE CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION Free collection of live Christmas trees only, will be offered by Republic Services from January 6-17, 2014. Trees must be free of tinsel, ornaments and hooks and should not be placed in bags.

CHRISTMAS TREE RECYCLING The Downers Grove Park District will host two drop-off sites for residents who would like to recycle their Christmas trees between December 26, 2013, and January 13, 2014. Trees are turned into wood chips which will be used as mulch within parks and landscaping projects. Locations are: · Whitlock Park, located at 40th Street and Fairview Avenue, in the parking lot off of Fairview · McCollum Park, located at 6801 S. Main Street, in the north parking lot off of 67th Street.

All items collected will be donated to Sharing Connections to benefit those in need in the community. Items will be collected through January 13, 2014. The coat drive is organized by the VOICE Committee, a voluntary group of Village employees with the goal of supporting humanitarian efforts in the organization and the Downers Grove community.

Village Council meetings are held the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Hall Council Chambers at 801 Burlington Avenue. Village Council meetings are broadcast live on DGTV-Ch. 6. The rebroadcast of these meetings can be seen Wednesday mornings at 9:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of Council meetings can only be heard at 7:00 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of the month on WDGC-FM, 88.3.

Spend an evening in South America at Rio’s ADDISON – One of the joys of living in this melting pot of a nation is that everyone comes here, and they bring their delicacies with them. I love American, Italian, Mexican, Thai and Japanese cuisine, along with several other varieties I’ve enjoyed over the years. But every once in a while, it’s fun to branch out by tasting something new. And something new is exactly what I found at Rio’s Fine South American Cuisine in Addison. Billed as a Peruvian restaurant on various websites, Rio’s also has delicacies from Argentina and Brazil that are sure to tempt your taste buds. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by a bar area that’s tasteful and hip, but not particularly ethnic. You could meet business clients for drinks here and they wouldn’t necessarily even recall that it was a South American establishment – unless they look closely at the wine list, which is filled with selections from all over the continent. Enter the dining area, though, and you’ll find yourself in a scene that’s both elegant and evocative of the dishes you’re about to sample. A massive mural across the back wall combines the famous Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. Other small decor touches give hints of South America without overwhelming the room and making it kitschy. I stopped by Rio’s on a recent evening with a dining companion, and I started right off with an authentic drink from south of the equator – a Dona Paula Sauvignon Blanc from Argentina, which the wine list describes as “bright, crisp, tart green apple skin, lime zest, guava, and grapefruit with a touch of minerality.” It proved to be a terrific accompaniment to the dishes that followed. We started with the Peruvian Sampler, wanting to

skewer, while my companion was a big fan of the tamale. When selecting an entree, I was immediately taken by the bright pictures of every dish on the menu. One item, the Pollo Enrollado, grabbed my attention right away. It fea-

remarked happily after trying a bite. My companion’s dish was even better, the Tallarin Verde con Churrasco. It included a generous helping of perfectly seasoned steak alongside fettucine mixed with Peruvian pesto (spinach, basil, white cheese, walnuts and olive oil). The steak and the pasta both tasted great on their own, but together the flavors were perfectly paired. We both really wanted dessert – interesting items included churros filled with caramel and hot chocolate dipping sauce, and ice cream made with Andean Lucuma fruit – but we were both too stuffed to properly enjoy it. That just means that next time I’ll have to – regretfully – forgo the Peruvian Sampler to save some room to try some exotic ice cream.

Bears face daunting task for 2014 season Hub Arkush

Marc Trestman scored well in many areas in his first season as Bears head coach, specifically in overseeing the dramatic improvement of one of the league’s weakest offenses and a significant thawing of the icy relationship Lovie Smith had with the Bears’ faithful. An objective look at the Bears’ 2013 season, however, shows the team also took some steps backward. Smith was fired for going 10-6 in his ninth year as the head coach but failing to make the playoffs. Is it reasonable to laud Trestman for going 8 -8 and also failing to make the playoffs after getting blown out in Week 16 by the Eagles and then losing at home on the last day of the season to the Packers when one win would have

clinched the division title? While Trestman should be applauded for the almost surreal growth of Josh McCown, upgrades to Jay Cutler and significant gains on offense, as the boss, he also has to shoulder the weight for the descent of one of the league’s better defenses under Smith to one of the worst in the NFL. Where does general manager Phil Emery fit in all of this? Irrespective of what Brian Urlacher may have had left, the decision to not bring him back doesn’t look good. Would it be different if D.J. Williams and Lance Briggs had stayed healthy? Perhaps, but the fact is the last really good game the Bears’ defense had was against Seattle in 2012 – until the final minutes when Urlacher’s season ended with a hamstring injury. Urlacher is irrelevant, though, because his tank was near empty, and the real problem is where does the defense go from here? Opening day starters Corey Wootton, Henry Melton, Williams, James

Anderson, Tim Jennings, Major Wright and Charles Tillman are free agents, as is recent addition Jeremiah Ratliff. Youngsters Chris Conte, Shea McClellin, Jonathan Bostic and Khaseem Greene have been disappointing, and that’s probably too kind to Conte and McClellin. Julius Peppers had his worst year as a pro and appears to have lost something, and counting on Briggs to stay healthy in his mid-30s is a crapshoot. There isn’t a single player to rebuild the “D” around. Remember that as impressive as the offensive turnaround and the rebuilding of the offensive line were, Cutler, McCown, Matt Forte and Brandon Marshall were in place for Trestman to build around. It’s also impossible to ignore that while Trestman’s earned our trust as a man who knows offense, Cutler, McCown, Matt Slauson and Roberto Garza are free agents, and Emery has a tough call to make on Cutler. Lost in the tremendous upward

and downward mobility of the offense and defense has been the fact that Joe DeCamillis’ special teams suffered a precipitous drop from where they were under Dave Toub, and Devin Hester also is a free agent after eight years with the Bears. Here is one more disturbing truth about these 2013 Bears: The winning percentage of their 16 opponents was .465, giving them the softest schedule of the six teams that finished 8-8. The only good news is that earns them the 14th pick in the first round of the 2014 draft when they could have picked as low as 19th, where the Dolphins (8-8) stand. A bit more alarming is the fact that of the 13 teams with worse records than them, only the Lions played an easier schedule. Once the balance sheet is laid bare in front of us, it is hard to call this season a success or these Bears anything more than somewhat below average. The trip into this offseason is as paved with uncertainty as any we’ve seen in a number of years.

CHICAGO – The tangled web of the Jay Cutler narrative was supposed to be straightened out Sunday. His last game on contract, a 33-28 thriller won by the Packers, was going to make it clear. Play well, Good Jay, forget your 1-7 record against Green Bay, and all is OK. Play poorly, Bad Jay, throw a few picks, and it’s time to go. “The speculation is, ‘Let’s see how he does in this kind of stage,’ ” coach Marc Trestman said after the game. “I thought Jay played well enough for us to win tonight.” But the web twisted even more during the game as fans and media sought the answer to the beaten question: Who is he – Good Jay or Bad Jay? The answer, though, lies in the question itself.

Place: Second in Class 1A State run: A standout performer for the Sentinels during both the indoor and outdoor seasons, Doll continued that trend in the postseason. The junior won sectional titles in the both the 200- and 400-meter dashes and also qualified for the state meet in the 100 dash. At the state meet, he won his heat of the 400 and then narrowly finished second in the finals with a time of 49.87. Quote: “I knew if I sat back and ran the race I usually run, which is to hold back the first 200 and then blow past everybody the final 200, I wouldn’t have a chance,” Tim Doll said. “So I pushed myself real hard the first 200 and then wished for the best the rest of the way.”

Name: Zack Smith, Downers Grove North Sport: Cross country Place: Third in Class 3A State run: In 2012, Smith had a solid showing as he finished eighth in the state. He did even better as a senior, finishing third in the state this fall with a time of 14:23. Smith’s time in the state finals was his best of the postseason; he won the regional and sectional meets with identical times of 14:36. In May, Smith was also third in the state in the 1,600-meter run at the Class 3A track and field finals with a time of 4:14.49 that was over four seconds better than his sectional meet time. Quote: “I ran really well and I think I gave it my all,” Zack Smith said. “Taking third in a competitive state like Illinois is no easy task, so I take a lot of pride in my accomplishment. But, most importantly, I did my job to help the team win a trophy. Although it’s an individual performance, the ultimate goal is to help the team

Name: Cullen Cummings, Downers Grove North Sport: Wrestling, 138 pounds Place: Fourth in Class 3A State run: Cummings didn’t lose a match until the regional tournament, but he quickly bounced back and claimed the 138-pound title at the Shepard sectional. Cummings had a tough semifinal draw at state against Belleville West’s Mech Spraggins. Cummings had

topped Spraggins during the regular season, but lost the state semi. He responded with a win in wrestleback semifinal and went on to finish fourth with a season record of 46-3. Quote: “I tried to take home a state title,” Cullen Cummings said. “It didn’t end up the way I wanted, but I’m kind of happy with how I ended my career.”

Name: Aimee Dragas, Downers Grove South Sport: Girls swimming, 100yard freestyle Place: Tied for second State run: After swimming a 1:43.10 to win the sectional title for athletes with disabilities, Dragas did even better at the state meet. She was seeded fourth heading to state, but with a time of 1:42.90 she ended up finishing in a tie for second place. Dragas also made state in the 50 freestyle and finished tied for third with a time of 47.01 seconds. Number to know: 3.26 – Seconds ahead of the third place 100 freestyle finisher at state.

Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team played one of its best games of the season in the opener of the Proviso West Holiday tournament, and Engo was a catalyst as the Mustangs took highly-regarded Knights down to the wire. Engo’s well-rounded game included 21 points, a team-high eight rebounds, a 5-of-6 performance at the free throw line and 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. HILLSIDE – Downers Grove South’s boys basketball had an early wake-up call Dec. 26 as it started play in the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. The Mustangs also had a tough draw against a highly-regarded Providence St. Mel team in the 9 a.m. game, but they showed well in a 6059 defeat. “I know there was a lot of hype around [Providence St. Mel] so we knew what we were coming into and we prepared in practice,” senior guard Paul Engo III said. “I was proud of the way we played as a team, but we just

came up a little short” In a wild second half that saw the lead change hands 12 times, South led 59-58 when Danny Spinuzza converted a layup with 30 seconds to play. The Knights grabbed the lead 10 seconds later, and Javon Turner’s last second shot just missed the mark for South. In the end, a few identifiable missed buckets were the key. “We had better execution [in the second half], but we have to finish some of our shots,” South head coach Kris Olson said. “I thought their quickness had a lot to do with it, but off set plays we missed four wide open layups. You make half of those and it’s a different ball game.” After falling to Provi-

Let’s blame Alaska Compared to the mild winters the area has experienced the past couple years, it feels as though the cold air hasn’t left, and because of a high pressure system over the eastern north pacific near Alaska, it’s been like that since November, according to Richard Castro, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville. Castro said that system over Alaska is causing the freezing air to plunge southward out of the arctic circle from northern

Getting prepared While the coldest days of these winter months have passed (hopefully) it’s important to be prepared for whatever lies ahead. One place to start before a winter storm or freeze is the hardware store. “I would keep flashlights, batteries and hand warmers,” said Bob Wing, floor manager at Buikema’s Ace Hardware, 1705 N. Main St., Wheaton. “The biggest thing is if the furnace goes out you have to stay warm, so that’s the biggest key is just warming up.” Wing said it’s a good idea to have salt on hand, which ranges from about $10 to $25 depending on the size of the bag, and to have snow shovels. While snow blowers can’t hurt to have ready to go before winter, he said it’s the little things like just having plenty of batteries for devices that make the difference.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove South High School Marching Mustangs traveled to Louisiana last week and joined other high school marching bands on the field before the Sugar Bowl and during its halftime show. Oklahoma beat Alabama on Thursday during the nationally-televised bowl game at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans. The Marching Mustangs performed at halftime. And appearing in full uniform, the band unfurled an American flag the size of the football field for the National Anthem during the pre-game ceremony after winning a field show competition between 14 marching ensembles. They were named Grand Champions of the field show competition, sweeping every category, according to District 99 Spokeswoman Jill Browning.

DOWNERS GROVE – Old man winter seemed to be throwing everything he could at the Midwest this week, and after what seemed like endless snow, an arctic blast moved in Sunday threatening record lows in the Chicago area through Tuesday. As of noon Tuesday, the lowest temperature recorded in Downers Grove since Sunday was negative 15 degrees, recorded at 7:45 a.m. Monday. That mark doesn’t reach the record low of 27 below zero for the area set Jan. 20, 1985, according to the National Weather Service. The lowest recorded wind chill came at 9:51 a.m. Monday at negative 42 degrees. The cold also forced schools across the western suburbs to cancel classes Monday and Tuesday, including districts 99, 58 and 66 in Downers Grove.

My Favorite Toy Store owner blames bank for closings By ED MCMENAMIN emcmenamin@shawmedia.com DOWNERS GROVE – The owner of My Favorite Toy Store said outstanding business loans led to closing the downtown Downers Grove and Elmhurst stores. Owner Michael Geisen of Downers Grove said the bank declined to offer a payment plan and instead took a lumpsum payment on long-term business loans, emptying his business checking account. Geisen said he took loans over time to buy inventory for both stores, as well as remodeling efforts and initial build-outs. But there were no funds left to pay staff or keep the doors open, which he closed for good at both stores at 3 p.m. Dec. 31. Geisen opened the Downers Grove location first in 2001, after a survey of residents named a toy store as the third most-wanted downtown business, he said. He opened the Elmhurst store in 2005. An outpouring of support for his business surfaced on its Facebook page this week after the closing announcement. “We share the disappointment many feel with the news about My Favorite Toy Store,” The Downers Grove

Downtown Management Corp. posted. “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and certainly, the heart of our village’s downtown. My Favorite Toy Store has become a centerpiece of our downtown merchant mix and has [become] a destination for all ages.” Geisen said further outstanding bills and outstanding sales taxes require him to sell all remaining merchandise at wholesale on advice of his attorney. He will not be able to honor gift certificates, returns or exchanges. “I can’t open the doors and incur more expense,” he said. “I feel really bad about that.” Geisen said business began to slow in 2008. “We were struggling, but I certainly didn’t see this coming,” he said. The two stores employed 17 people, he said. He said he believes a momand-pop toy store can still be a viable business in downtowns like Downers Grove and Elmhurst. “We were the vendor of choice with the specialty items that we carry,” he said. “And with the free gift wrapping and customer service, and helping the customer find the right gift, you can’t get that on Amazon.”

Cole knows what’s ahead, having gone through two deployments already, and said leaving behind family is the hardest part. “I know how unpleasant it can be,” he said. “But I’m ready.” His family also is likely as ready as a family can be. They moved 10 times when he was on active duty, and he was sent abroad many times before the three Middle East tours. “The military wife is really a special person,” he said. “I have been gone so many times … I’d leave for a month or months at a time, sometimes with only a few hours notice, and she’d just [take care of everything].” At 48, Cole is old for the military, and this could be his last deployment. “Young people who look at me say ‘He’s old enough to be my dad,’” he said. “But I got a little left, so I’m still in and we’ll see what happens.”

DOWNERS GROVE – When Dr. James Cole discharged from the Navy in 2000 after nine years of service, the need for surgeons like him in the U.S. military looked much different than it would just months later. “I left active duty at that time thinking it was a peaceful world,” he said. “And less than a year later 9/11 happened, and that changed everything, and I got back on as a drilling reservist.” At the time a nine-year veteran, Cole said he thought of the friends still in active duty who would be sent overseas and how they might need his service. “A lot of them had children and were young and enlisted,” he said. “And I’m a trauma surgeon. There aren’t many of us in the military. And like no other time except maybe Vietnam, they’re going to need us.” This month, Cole, the assistant director for trauma at

lives in DeKalb County. As a surgeon in Downers Grove, Cole said the gruesome injuries from car accidents often resemble the wounds inflicted by fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan. Though the injuries may be visually similar, the operating environment couldn’t be more different. In his first tour to Afghanistan, Cole joined special operations troops as they pushed outward toward Pakistan’s border. The surgeries would often take place in a tent, with instruments and lighting powered by generators set up by Cole. He made that first Afghanistan deployment in 2004, followed by a tour in Iraq in 2007. “Afghanistan in 2004 was still the absolute wild, wild west,” he said. “It was as dangerous as can be. … It was very hostile.” Unlike that deployment, this year, he will operate in a more managerial capacity overseeing several trauma efforts in the war-torn country. I often hear my patients tell me information they heard from others, even doctors, that prevented them from seeking the hearing help they need and deserve. Here are a few hearing myths from the Better Hearing Institute that may help:

The consequences of hiding hearing loss are better than wearing hearing aids. What price are you paying for vanity? Untreated hearing loss is far more noticeable than hearing aids. If you miss a punch line to a joke or respond inappropriately in conversation, people may have concerns about your mental acuity, your attention span, or your ability to communicate effectively. DOWNERS GROVE – Jessica Larsen and Joseph Dempsey were driving for takeout at Nardi’s Tower of Pizza in Addison when her water broke on New Year’s Eve. Larsen quickly called her doctor, who said there was no reason to rush. “He was like, ‘Oh yeah go ahead and eat your food,’” she said. After some pizza and a quick shower, Larsen and Dempsey headed to Good Samaritan Hospital, where, several hours later, she gave birth to the hospital’s first baby of 2014.
