DeKalb also benefits from a local bus system that provides more than 50 stops throughout the city and surrounding area.
Passenger service on rail, bus and air is also readily available and connects you to any location you want to go. Chicago’s Metra service can be accessed in Elburn, IL, a few minutes outside of DeKalb. If you want to fly to your destination, then there is O’Hare International Airport, Chicago Midway Airport and Rockford International Airport. 1. Find locally grown sweet corn at the DeKalb Farmers' Market. Come in September to get unique gourds & pumpkins! 2. Try beer nuggets! Those are fried pieces of pizza dough with a dipping sauce - multiple varieties are out there like plain, parmesan, and cinnamon sugar. Lots of places offer them, find your favorite. 3. Check out a local theatre turned indoor skate park in East downtown! 4. Check out the front of the historic Egyptian Theatre's famous marquee and while you’re at it see what upcoming movies and shows they have. 5. Go to the highest man-made (non-building, non-landfill) point in DeKalb County - the sledding hill at Hopkin's Park. 6. Do one of the most Midwestern-ish things ever – go to Corn Fest in Downtown DeKalb and eat free sweet corn from the Corn Boil powered by an actual steam engine! 7. While you’re at the corner of Lincoln Hwy. & 1st St. check out the newly refurbished Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Clock. Its 100th birthday was in 2021 and it’s part of the DeKalb Chamber logo. 8. Try all the tasty local foods like fried potato salad, bagels, pizza, chocolates, and so much more! 9. Learn about the 3 Fathers of Barbed Wire – Glidden, Ellwood, & Haish. Who designed what? And how did these patents change the world? 10. Take in the community from the Ellwood House Porch. The view is one of the most popular places in DeKalb to take a photo. (P.S. This same porch hosts music concerts in the summer!) 11. Escape to a cornfield, find a winged ear of corn, or see how you measure up to some of the most beautiful corn in all the land! 12. Shop in our beautiful downtown. Find unique items that are #distinctlyyou! 13. Listen to the DeKalb Municipal Band at the Dee Plamer Band Shell. 14. Check out the local Castle, aka Altgeld Hall, and explore NIU campus. 15. Downtown DeKalb has a number of outdoor dining options. Find your favorite and enjoy the nice weather! 16. Ride or walk on the DeKalb Park District's many bike paths. 17. Be bold! Try local wine, beer, and spirits at our wineries, breweries, and distilleries. 18. Humpty Dumpty keeps watch over the newly expanded DeKalb Public Library. Go inside to see how they mimicked the marble in the old part in the new addition. 19. Frisbee golf, disc golf, or frolf – whatever you call it, we've got a course! 20. Murals! Find your favorites.

Engineering, Math, & Science Academy (EMSA) Kishwaukee College - open to all high school juniors who are interested in pursuing a major focused on science or engineering. Offers a minimum of 23 transferable college credits that they can earn during high school. The Pre-Professional Track is aimed towards students in science-based majors and the Engineering Track is aimed for students interested in majors in engineering and physics.
Kishwaukee Education Consortium (KEC)- students can earn high school AND college credit for Aviation, Automated Engineering, Auto Technology, Barbering, Business Leadership, Certified Nursing Assistant, Computer Information, Criminal Justice, Culinary, Diesel Technology, Education, Emergency Medical Tech, Fire Science, Medical Terminology, Web Development, Welding, and much more.
2 Degrees in 3 Years- in partnership with Kishwaukee College & NIU- a unique program where students can earn an associate degree in one year and a bachelor’s degree in 2 years after high school by optimizing schoolwork during their junior and senior year through dual credit, CLEP/AP/IB proficiency credit, dual enrollment, EMSA and KEC courses.
