krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Three men recently posted bail amid charges they’re facing after police said the trio was shooting guns near a residence in rural DeKalb when a bullet went into a nearby home and struck a woman sitting in her living room.

The victim was injured after a bullet went through her nearby home June 29 and struck her in the foot, according to DeKalb County court records. She was sitting on the couch at the time when a bullet entered the west wall, striking her in the heel and lodging itself in her right foot, records show.

Jerry G. Fabbri, 51, of the 800 block of Shepherd Lane in Elburn; Alexander G. Fabbri, 19, of the 600 block of Sheffield Circle in Sugar Grove; and Benedict C.H. Groppe, 38, from Rupperswil, Switzerland, are all charged with reckless conduct, a Class 4 felony. If convicted, the trio could face up to three years in jail. Records show the men posted $2,000 bail after being given a $20,000 bond on an arrest warrant by DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery July 1. Bail for all three men was posted in cash on July 5, records show.

Deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were called around 7:44 p.m. after a woman’s family member called police to request medical assistance for a gunshot wound. The woman was taken to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, where X-rays confirmed a bullet was in her foot, court records state.

After an investigation, police identified three men who were later arrested, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

“Through investigation, police learned that all three had been recreational shooting multiple firearms at a target that was in the general direction of the victim’s home,” according to the release.

Police determined that the three men hadn’t followed proper safety procedures when shooting the guns, and that’s why a round struck the home to the west, according to the release.

Benedict C.H. Groppe, According to court 38, of Rupperswil, records, the trio were Switzerland allegedly taking turns shooting bullets from “a variety of six guns” records state, in the 15000 block of Keslinger Road. The guns are legally owned by Jerry Fabbri, who has a valid FOID card, court records show.

The men were shooting at a wooden pallet toward the east, with no backup or safety berm behind it to stop any rounds, records state.

They allegedly fired the weapons in the direction of the roadway, though there were homes on the south side.

The three men turned themselves in to police July 1 after police presented them with arrest warrants.

All three men are expected back in court for a status hearing at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 8.

Lawmaker meets with DeKalb mayor to visit $1B facility under construction expected to bring hundreds of new jobs to the area

mhorstead@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Months after several high-profile corporations announced plans to move regional-based headquarters out of state, Sen. Dick Durbin said during a visit to Meta’s DeKalb Data Center Thursday he believes Illinois still has a bright economic future.

Durbin made a stop in DeKalb Thursday to tour the progress now underway at the construction site of Meta’s $1 billion data center. Meta is the parent company of social media giant Facebook.

The facility, located along Interstate 88 and Gurler Road, is expected to bolster the local economy by hundreds of jobs after an expansion was announced in April.

“What Meta is doing here in DeKalb is amazing,” Durbin said after the tour Thursday. “It’s incredible. Thank goodness they chose DeKalb and Illinois to be part of it. This is a massive investment. It is a game-changer for a lot of lives.”

The Democratic senator’s DeKalb stop was one of several planned in northern Illinois. During a Thursday stop in Dixon, Durbin also said he believes lawmakers “ought to draw a line” on assault weapons days after a Fourth of July mass shooting Highland Park left seven and dozens more injured.

The Meta DeKalb project promises to employ about 200 operational jobs and is enlisting the services of 1,200 construction workers.

In response to spring announcements that several high-profile businesses, Caterpillar, Boeing and Citadel, plan to move their Chicago-based headquarters out of state, Durbin said he believes Illinois still offers a compelling pitch for businesses.

“I think we continue to sell our strongest asset: the people who live here,” Durbin said.

The lawmaker said it’s been his experience while working to entice businesses to put down roots in the state that Illinois labor is a selling point.

“I think back on all the different ventures I’ve been involved in trying to attract businesses,” Durbin continued.

DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes said Meta is committed to providing good paying jobs.

“They’re all excellent opportunities, excellent jobs for everyone,” Barnes said. “So, well above what you’re asking.”

DeKalb city leaders worked for more than a year to entice the social media giant – which also owns Instagram, Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and the virtual reality platform Oculus – to put down roots on the city’s south side.

Among the offers made to help lure the company here, DeKalb County area governments worked together to approve a multi-decade tax incentive for Meta.

The data center is privy to a 20-year, 55% property tax abatement plan, already approved by the DeKalb City

Council and agreed upon through the DeKalb County Enterprise Zone, a program administered by the DeKalb County Economic Development Corporation. The tax incentive includes a stipulation of 50 tech jobs with a starting wage of $38.50 an hour to qualify for tax abatements within the first few years, documents show.

Durbin said the tour of Meta’s data center prompted him to get a good impression of the city.

“I’m bedazzled by what I’ve seen here,” Durbin said. “Ferrara’s right across the street. Meta’s undertaking here. … It’s an exciting experience here to come and see all these new investments. You can see a bright future for this area.”

Barnes said he thinks that that Meta and the construction engineering company the social media giant is employing, Mortenson, will leave a lasting impact on the community.

“That impact that they’re already having in our community has been substantial,” Barnes said. “Many [workers] are living in our community as well.

They’re buying houses. They’re renting

apartments. So, the economic impact … goes well beyond just this particular project. It ripples on the individual small business owner in our community.”

Durbin said Meta’s decision to build in DeKalb couldn’t come at a better time.

“It’s a major investment in our state at a time when some people are questioning the future of Illinois. They say come to DeKalb, see what’s happening here.”

Barnes gave kudos not only to Durbin but also Sen. Tammy Duckworth and U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Naperville, for their support of the city.

With the 2022 Midterm election months away, Durbin addressed presidential prospects for the Democrats and said it’s too early to throw support behind President Joe Biden for a 2024 White House campaign.

“The president has to decide his own future first,” Durbin said. “I’ve been working with him in his days in office to make him a success. We’ve got a lot of things we can achieve together.”

Route 64 water main work complete, next phase begins July 11

staylor@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Weeks of water main construction along Illinois Route 64 near downtown Sycamore was completed Thursday, with new work expected to begin on Exchange Street next week.

Sycamore city officials confirmed this week that street improvements on the state route from Locust Street to Sabin Street is complete, according to a Thursday construction update posted by the city of Sycamore.

Construction included mainline water main work, which is now being tested. Drive lanes along Route 64 were also patched.

“Thank you for your patience as we work to improve our community’s infrastructure,” city staff wrote in a social media post.

Water main, lead service updates

More water main work will start on Exchange Street from Walnut to Sabin Street the week of July 11, according to the city. Residents and motorists should be alert for signs that will prohibit parking in certain areas during construction, according to the city’s plans.

The replacement of residential water pipes, which are lined with lead, also remains underway, according to the city’s construction update.

As of Thursday, more than 80 leadlined services have been replaced at no cost to the homeowner.

Residents who are not sure what material their water lines are lined with can contact the city’s water department at 815-895-4516 for information.

The city of Sycamore also applied for a second round of funding

through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency which, if approved, will aid additional lead line replacement, documents show.

Work on the city’s water tower also continues, with repairs to its existing metal underway, and painting set to begin. The tower will be painted with the same color scheme as the north water tower, according to city officials. Interior work on the water tower will begin the week of July 18.

Pavement repairs

Additional infrastructure improvements are underway across Sycamore residential neighborhoods. Concrete work on curbs, ramps and sidewalks in the Landahl and Townsend Woods subdivisions is expected to be completed within two weeks, according to the city’s social media post.

Work on pavements in several Sycamore neighborhoods also is planned.

Midwest CAM Solutions, a manufacturer of products which prolong the life of pavement, also is undergoing an application through the city for a pavement rejuvenator, according to the city’s construction update.

The product is a sealant used to preserve the life of existing pavement.

Pavement work is planned for Edward Street, Foxbend Drive, Hathaway Drive, Foxpointe Drive, Fairway Lane, Cambridge Lane, Cloverlane Drive, Parker Street, Croatian Court, Roosevelt Court, Orchard Lane, North Cross Street, Crosby Avenue, Pebblewood Court and Plaza Drive.

Residents should expect that pavement restoration work will require temporary lane closures during the day, documents show. Signs will be posted accordingly.

City greenlights Citizen’s Beautification Committee, to start in August 2022

staylor@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A resident-led city group meant to help improve Sycamore’s aesthetic was greenlit this week, with plans to start up a Citizen’s Beautification Committee in early August.

The Citizen’s Beautification Committee will serve as an advisory body to the mayor, Sycamore City Council, city manager and other city officials in developing plans for projects involving city beautification. While the group won’t have any policy-making power, the seven-member body is expected to make recommendations to the City Council to consider.

The committee’s inception was approved unanimously by the Sycamore City Council Tuesday, with an effective start day of Aug. 1. The seven members will be appointed by the mayor this summer.

Sycamore City Manager Michael Hall said city staff will begin the identify the process to appoint members at the next scheduled meeting.

Although no members have been chosen, Ward 1 Alderman Josh Huse-

man said he would be interested.

“I think to be proactive, this is super,” Huseman said.

City officials said they hope to give Sycamore residents a voice by joining the committee.

“Tell us what you’d like to see and how do we make that happen,” said Ward 4 Alderman David Stouffer.

According to city documents, committee members will serve a term of three years and up to nine years total. Meetings will be held on a regular basis on a schedule that will be determined by the members.

“This group would get together to suggest these things and then bring it forth to the city council for approval,” Hall said.

The committee would also facilitate the city’s existing facade improvement program, which allocates public dollars to area businesses, developments and buildings through council approval.

The committee also is expected to work with city personnel to create beautification project proposals that enhance the city’s appearance, documents show, and, if needed, solicit volunteers for project implementation.

krettke@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man is facing charges after court records allege he broke into a woman’s home and threatened to kill a man inside the home with a knife.

Devonte L. Ragsdale, 28, of the 900 block of Ridge Drive in DeKalb is charged with home invasion, a Class X felony, crimi- Devonte L. Ragsdale, nal trespass 28, of DeKalb to a residence, misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.

If convicted of the most serious crime, home invasion, Ragsdale could face up to 30 years in prison.

According to DeKalb County court records, Ragsdale was charged after a July 4 incident during which he’s accused of breaking into a Sycamore wom-

During a bond hearing in front of Circuit Court Judge Marcy Buick Monday, Ragsdale was represented by attorney Charles Criswell of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office. Prosecutors asked for bond to be set at $25,000.

Criswell argued Ragsdale’s lack of criminal history qualified him for a recognizance no-cash bond.

“In this case, he is charged with a Class X felony,” Buick said. “I’ve reviewed the synopsis where there’s the allegation of threatening of the individuals in the residence, arming himself with a knife from the kitchen, so I do think in this case in light of that Class X felony, it’s appropriate I set bail.”

Buick ruled Ragsdale’s bond be set at $30,000, with $3,000 needed to post bail and be released from DeKalb County Jail. Records show Ragsdale posted that cash bail Thursday.

Police were called to the home about 7:37 p.m. July 7 for reports of a domestic battery,

records state. The residents inside the home, a man and a woman Ragsdale knew, told police that Ragsdale allegedly broke into the home through a bedroom window where the couple was and began arguing with them.

Ragsdale is also accused of punching a hole in the drywall during the verbal argument, which was allegedly about a child.

The victims told police Ragsdale allegedly left the bedroom and went to the kitchen, where he grabbed a kitchen knife. The male victim closed the bedroom door, but Ragsdale broke it down, records allege, and threatened to kill the man with a knife.

Ragsdale is accused of fleeing the home after he put the knife down and driving to another home in the 1400 block of John Street in Sycamore where another child was present.

Ragsdale is due back for a status hearing at 8:45 a.m.

Sycamore Boy Scout earns Eagle award for conservation project

SYCAMORE – Quinn Harrelson, a member of Boy Scout Troop 2810 chartered out of Salem Lutheran Church of Sycamore, recently completed his Eagle project aiding area conservation.

Harrelson’s project benefited DeKalb County’s Forest Preserves as he worked to help restore wetlands at the South Afton Wetland Mitigation Bank, according to a news release.

Harrelson consulted with Restoration Ecologist Patrick McCrea of the DeKalb County Forest Preserve District and came up with the project together. The pair met several times to plan out the project and Harrelson visited other wetland areas to better understand how they function.

The forest preserve donated 850 native plants for Harrelson to use in his project. To qualify as an Eagle Scout, Harrelson had to earn 21 merit badges, have his project approved by a committee, hold a leadership position in his Boy Scout troop and moved through all prior scout levels.

Lions provide free picnic for those with disabilities

SHABBONA – Lions Club members from 15 communities are preparing the annual picnic for some special heroes.

The Lions Fishing Derby for Persons With Disabilities will take place July 21 at Shabbona Lake State Park. Taking assorted assignments, the Lions provide boat rides, lunch, a petting zoo, canoe rides, trailer rides between areas and, of course, fishing from an accessible fishing pier among other events.

Families, friends and groups are invited to attend the free event.

Nearly 150 people will be available to assist in “accessibility.” For over 40 years the event has been an anniversary of the construction of an accessible fishing pier at the well-known fishing lake.

Chancellor’s charge make UI a ‘global leader’ in health innovation CHAMPAIGN – Chancellor Robert Jones sees greater potential in the University of Illinois’ collection of health-related assets and institutions.

That’s why he’s assigned a new task force to figure out how to make the UI a “national and global leader in health innovation.”

“This team will propose the future role of Illinois as a pioneer in establishing a new technology-driven academic health research and education model that makes a significant, visible and sustained impact on human health,” Jones wrote in a mass email.

The new Health Innovation Visioning Committee will be chaired by Stephen Boppart, a 23-year UI engineering professor.

Boppart’s field concerns the intersection between engineering and medicine.

He’s currently the executive association dean and chief diversity officer for the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the director of optical molecular imaging at Beckman Institute.

The UI “is really poised to be this epicenter for technology and technol-

ogy-inspired health and wellness,” Boppart said. “I think the impact this university can make by applying innovation and its prowess in technology can make a difference for humanity and the human condition, in a very broad sense.”

Jones and Boppart both held up the UI’s SHIELD saliva testing program in response to the COVID-19 pandemic as a prime example of campus innovation solving a “perplexing” health problem. The hope, Jones said, is for the university to generate “many more examples like SHIELD that improve the human condition.”

The committee will be relatively small – with 15 official members and six more in ex-officio roles – but the work is “meant to be comprehensive.”

The committee has from July 1 of this year through Jan. 15, 2023, to create a seminal reporter for the chancellor detailing health assets and priorities. A progress presentation is expected by September, Jones wrote in the charge letter.

Here were the long-term charges for the committee listed by Jones in

his announcement: • Inventory the UI’s health assets and strengths.

• Define key research themes “that position Illinois to pioneer breakthrough[s]” and “profound social advances.”

• Propose innovation-focused changes to the UI’s health academic models.

• Identify infrastructure, equipment, faculty and research personnel worth investing in for the cause.

• Identify “key stakeholders” for health innovation partnerships in the community.

• “Review program statements for the Research Park’s Graduation Facility [including EnterpriseWorks] and the Translational Research Facility” and make a plan to integrate them with the health innovation mission.

Boppart will become the interim director of the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute in August, taking over for Professor Neal Cohen, who has led the institute since its founding in 2019.

“The plan that emerges from their

work” should “complement and support” the goals of existing health institutions, like the health sciences institute, the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, the Cancer Center at Illinois, the College of Applied Health Sciences, the Carle-Illinois Strategic Affiliation Steering Committee, the Mayo Clinic and Illinois Alliance, JUMP-ARCHES, the Beckman Institute and the Center for Social and Behavioral Sciences, Jones said.

“I am encouraging them to think comprehensively, including not only direct allied health professions and medicine, but more broadly mental and physical health; public and rural health; agricultural technologies that improve the production, nutrition and safety of our food resources; environmental health for the betterment and protection of our planet and global health, for sustaining the life, health and wellness in all communities, societies and populations around the world,” Jones said.

Slowing, halting sale of single-use plastics at parks is long overdue Environmental protection measures are so politicized these days that it’s difficult to make consistent progress on any front, even when the solution to a problem is so plainly simple.

Yet in recent days, we’ve seen some encouraging signs.

Sixteen months ago, Julie Morrison, a state senator from Lake Forest, proposed the state change its procurement policy to require state agencies contract solely with vendors that don’t use single-use plastics for food service at state parks and natural areas.

Gov. JB Pritzker finally signed that into law this week. It goes into effect in January ... 2024.

Better late than never, we say.

Instead of plastic bottles, cups, sand-

wich boxes, bags and the like, vendors will have to use materials that are either recyclable or compostable. If you must have a plastic straw, you may ask for one.

“We must work together to do all we can to keep our parks clean,” Morrison said in a news release. “By implementing more biodegradable and reusable alternatives to plastic, we can put our communities on a path toward sustainability.”

Days earlier, the federal Department of the Interior pledged to halt the sale of such products in national parks and forests by 2032.

Meantime, it will phase out the use of such materials while the department identifies alternatives.

“As the steward of the nation’s public lands, including national parks and national wildlife refuges, and as the agency responsible for the conservation and management of fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats,” the Interior Department is “uniquely positioned to do better for our Earth,” Interior Secretary Deb Haaland said in a statement.

So, why would the federal government take a decade to fix this and the state a little more than a year?

There is a significant difference in scale. The Department of Interior oversees 480 million acres, a great percentage of it in the western states.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources manages 309 state parks and recreational sites on less than a half

million acres.

Consider that Americans buy about 50 billion water bottles and throw away about 25 billion Styrofoam cups each year. Only 10% of single use plastic is recycled.

Because it doesn’t magically disappear, almost all of those water bottles we’ve thrown away all our lives still exist – in some form – today, whether it be in a glob of plastic in the ocean or in microparticles that poison our water and soil.

If all of these things don’t trouble you, think of how the absence of plastic in our nation’s and state’s parks and forest will make for a more pleasant walk in the woods.

How July 4 suspect slipped through system

Illinois’ “red-flag” law could have stopped the suspect in the Independence Day parade shooting from buying a gun or at least delayed the purchase of the weapon he’s accused of using to kill seven people and wound dozens.

Police in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park were called twice to the home of Robert Crimo III in 2019 – once after he tried to commit suicide and again when he allegedly threatened to “kill everyone” in his family. On either occasion, they could have immediately exercised part of the law that allowed them to seek a restraining order to prevent Crimo from buying guns for anywhere from 14 days to six months.

Obtaining such a delay could have bought critical time for police to seek more information to ask a judge for a longer order preventing a gun purchase.

But Highland Park police did not seek such an order, and they were not required to do so. And just four months after the reported threat that prompted officers to seize 16 knives, a sword and a dagger from Crimo’s home, Illinois State Police approved him for a firearms permit. The agency explained the decision in part by saying that it didn’t consider him a “clear and present danger” because he didn’t consider himself such a danger.

“When police went to the home and asked the individual if he felt like harming himself or others, he responded no,” the state police said in a statement this week, adding “importantly” that Crimo’s father assured officers that the col-

lection of knives seized from the home was his and would be stored safely.

That fateful decision in early 2020 to issue the then-19-year-old Crimo a firearms permit allowed him to legally purchase five guns, including the Smith & Wesson semi-automatic rifle authorities say he used from his rooftop perch to unleash more than 80 rounds on a Fourth of July parade below.

The episode highlights how, even in a state with some of the nation’s most restrictive gun laws, opportunities can be missed to keep weapons from dangerous and disturbed people. While the authorities who crossed paths with Crimo contend their hands were tied by the law, several people familiar with Illinois’ statutes told The Associated Press there were more than enough ways to block him from getting guns.

“Laws don’t mean much unless they’re followed,” said Sean Holihan, the state legislative director for Giffords, a gun safety advocacy group.

“This fell through the cracks. The law was written to make sure this wouldn’t happen and it still did.”

Nicholas Suplina, senior vice president for law and policy at Everytown for Gun Safety said, “Red-flag laws are designed for precisely this kind of situation. ... It’s an important tool in the gun violence prevention toolbox. But you got to take the tool out and use it.”

A tool Highland Park police did make use of, they said, was the “clear and present danger” report filed with the state after their two visits to his home in 2019. Such reports are intended to alert state police to people who, if allowed to buy a gun, may pose an “imminent threat of substantial bodily harm to themselves or others.”

Highland Park police did not respond to requests for comment.

Crimo’s warning signs also included a voluminous and disturbing social media footprint that went back years and somehow escaped law enforcement scrutiny despite the fact that the aspiring rapper had thousands of followers on YouTube and songs on Spotify that collectively had millions of plays.

Stick-thin, dark-haired and heavily tattooed on his neck and face, Crimo went by the stage name Awake the Rapper and left a trail of clues in his videos of a fascination with violence, guns and suicide. One video titled “Toy Soldier” showed a cartoon figure brandishing a rifle on a city street, followed by drawings of a victim’s chest spurting blood and police cars closing in.

In online chat rooms that reveled in mass murder and gore, Crimo apparently also posted video of a beheading and grainy news footage of a politician’s infamous public suicide.

“Like a sleepwalker … I know what I have to do,” Crimo narrated in another rap video posted late last year. “Everything has led up to this. Nothing can stop me, even myself.”

“We were not made aware of these videos,” Christopher Covelli, deputy chief of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, told reporters.

For its part, Illinois State Police defended the issuance of a gun permit for Crimo, noting that Highland Park police had declined to arrest the teen after his alleged threat in September 2019 because they could not meet the legal hurdle of “probable cause.” To deny a gun permit, they said, requires an even higher legal standard – “preponderance of evidence” – that he is a

clear and present danger.

State police also noted in a statement that even though an unidentified family member reported the threat and spoke of a fear of returning home, family members denied Crimo was dangerous and didn’t want to press charges.

“When police went to the house, both the individual and his mother disputed the threat of violence. The individual told police he did not feel like hurting himself or others and was offered mental health resources,” the statement said.

Several months before, in April 2019, Crimo attempted to commit suicide by machete, according to a police report obtained by AP that noted a “history of attempts.” Other police reports show officers had visited the Crimo home frequently over the years for domestic violence disputes and other incidents.

Several experts described Crimo as the epitome of a “clear and present danger,” defined under Illinois law as a person who “communicates a serious threat of physical violence” or “demonstrates threatening physical or verbal behavior.”

But others weren’t so sure, noting that police are limited in how much they can act when an accuser reporting violent threats doesn’t want to press charges and family members are uncooperative.

Even if an order had been issued, it’s not a given that a judge would have extended the order beyond six months.

Robert Berlin, state attorney for DuPage County, the most active issuer of red-flag orders in Illinois, said that the dozens of cases he’s overseen almost always include family members assisting investigators.

In the midst of chaotic shooting, strangers save a young boy

CHICAGO – A woman – stunned and speechless in the chaos of a July 4 parade massacre – walked up to Greg Ring and handed him a 2-year-old boy, covered in blood.

Ring had fled the scene in Highland Park with his wife and three children to an area behind a popular pancake house.

“We kind of met eyes and didn’t say anything ... I put my arms out, and she gave him to me,” Ring said Wednesday, when describing the exchange with the unidentified woman, who then laid down in front of their car in shock.

The boy pointed in the direction of the parade route, saying, “Mommy, Daddy, Mommy, Daddy.”

Ring’s wish to help the boy carried him back to the scene. He tucked the boy’s face in his chest, so he couldn’t see the carnage. But Ring quickly realized it was too dangerous.

“Active shooter! Get back down!” a police officer shouted. Ring fled again.

He and his family got to their car and took the boy to a Highland Park fire station. “I have a boy. He’s not ours,” he told the department staff, who asked him to keep the boy as authorities searched for the shooter and helped the wounded.

“They were getting ready for war,”

Ring said.

The family drove to Ring’s in-laws, where they hunkered down. There, the boy sat with Ring’s 4-year-old, watching a Mickey Mouse show.

“He asked my wife to wipe him off because he had blood on him that wasn’t his,” said Ring, an insurance broker from Highland Park.

They later were able to identify the boy and reunite him with his grandparents. Aiden McCarthy’s parents, Kevin and Irina, both died in the shooting, which left five others dead and more than two dozen wounded.

Friends of the McCarthys said Irina’s parents would care for the boy going forward.

“Aiden ... will have a long road ahead to heal, find stability, and ultimately navigate life as an orphan. He is surrounded by a community of friends and extended family that will embrace him with love, and any means available to ensure he has everything he needs as he grows,” Irina Colon wrote on a GoFundMe account she created for the family and Aiden. Colon, who described Irina McCarthy as family on her Facebook page, has raised more than $2 million so far.

On Wednesday, Ring was still trying to process what happened at the July 4 parade. He said he’s not a hero and just did what anyone would have done in the situation.

LONDON – Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation Thursday after droves of top government officials quit over the latest scandal to engulf him, marking an end to three tumultuous years in which he tried to bluster his way through one ethical lapse after another.

Months of defiance ended almost with a shrug as Johnson stood outside No. 10 Downing St. and conceded that his party wanted him gone.

“Them’s the breaks,” he said.

The brash, 58-year-old politician who took Britain out of the European Union and steered it through COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine was brought down by one scandal too many – this one involving his appointment of a politician who had been accused of sexual misconduct.

The messiest of prime ministers did not leave cleanly. Johnson stepped down immediately as Conservative Party leader but said he would remain

as prime minister until the party chooses his successor. The timetable for that process will be announced next week. The last leadership contest took six weeks.

But many want him to go now, with some Conservative politicians expressing fear he could do mischief even as a caretaker prime minister.

“It’s very difficult to see how Boris Johnson, given the character that he is, is going to be able to govern for three months in quiet humility and contrition,” said George Freeman, who resigned as science minister on Thursday.

Among the possible candidates to succeed Johnson: former Health Secretary Sajid Javid, former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Defense Secretary Ben Wallace.

About 50 Cabinet secretaries, ministers and lower-level officials quit the government over the past few days because of the latest scandal, often castigating the prime minister as lacking integrity.

NEWS BRIEF Japan ex-leader Abe apparently shot, in heart failure

TOKYO – Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was in heart failure after apparently being shot during a campaign speech Friday in western Japan, NHK public TV said Friday.

The broadcaster aired footage showing Abe collapsed on the street, with several security guards running toward him. Abe was holding his chest when he collapsed, with his shirt smeared with blood. NHK says Abe was rushed to a hospital.

Abe was in Nara campaigning ahead of

Sunday’s election for the parliament’s upper house and was giving a speech when people heard a gunshot.

Police arrested a male suspect at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, NHK said.

Ex-‘Cheer’ star Harris gets 12 years for seeking photos, sex CHICAGO – A federal judge Wednesday sentenced Jerry Harris, a former star of the Netflix documentary series “Cheer,” to 12 years in prison for coercing teenage boys to send him obscene photos and videos of themselves and soliciting sex from minors at cheerleading competitions.

U.S. District Judge Manish Shah also ordered that the sentence be followed by eight years of court-supervised release.

Shah told Harris to consider the sentence an “expression of the seriousness of your crimes, tempered with some hope that all is not lost for you or for your victims, and that in the future some healing can occur.”

Harris, 22, of Naperville, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count each of receiving child pornography and traveling with the intention to engage in illegal sexual conduct.

A prosecutor had asked for a sentence of 15 years followed by 10 years of supervised release while attorneys for Harris sought a sentence of six years and eight years of supervised release.

Before learning his sentence, Harris apologized to his victims, saying, “I am deeply sorry for all the trauma my abuse has caused you. I pray deep down that your suffering comes to an end.”

“I’m not an evil person,” Harris said. “I’m still learning who I am and what my purpose is.”

Harris has been in custody at a federal detention facility.

James Caan, the curly-haired tough guy known to movie fans as the hotheaded Sonny Corleone of “The Godfather” and to TV audiences as both the dying football player in the classic weeper “Brian’s Song” and the casino boss in “Las Vegas,” has died. He was 82.

His manager Matt DelPiano said he died on Wednesday. No cause was given.

“Jimmy was one of the greatest. Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, he was funny, loyal, caring and beloved,” DelPiano said.

James Caan “Our relationship was always friendship before business. I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years.”

A football player at Michigan State University and a practical joker on production sets, Caan was a grinning, handsome performer with an athlete’s swagger and muscular build. He managed a long career despite drug problems, outbursts of temper and minor brushes with the law.

Caan had been a favorite of Francis Ford Coppola since the 1960s, when Coppola cast him for the lead in “Rain People.” He was primed for a featured role in “The Godfather” as Sonny, the No. 1 enforcer and eldest son of Mafia boss Vito Corleone.

Sonny Corleone, a violent and reckless man who conducted many killings, met his own end in one of the most jarring movie scenes in history. For

decades after, he once said, strangers would approach him on the street and jokingly warn him to stay clear of toll roads.

Despite Coppola’s fears he had made a flop, the 1972 release was an enormous critical and commercial success and brought supporting actor Oscar nominations for Caan, Robert Duvall and Al Pacino.

Caan was already a star on TV, breaking through in the 1971 TV movie “Brian’s Song,” an emotional drama about Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo, who had died of cancer the year before at age 26.

After “Brian’s Song” and “The Godfather,” he was one of Hollywood’s busiest actors, appearing in “Hide in Plain Sight” (which he also directed), “Funny Lady” (opposite Barbra Streisand), “The Killer Elite” and Neil Simon’s “Chapter Two,” among others.

He also made a brief appearance in a flashback sequence in “The Godfather, Part II.” But by the early 1980s he began to sour on films.

He had begun to struggle with drug use and was devastated by the 1981 leukemia death of his sister, Barbara, who until then had been a guiding force in his career. He returned to full-fledged stardom opposite Kathy Bates in “Misery” in 1990.

Once again in demand, Caan starred in “For the Boys” with Bette Midler in 1991 as part of a song-anddance team entertaining U.S. soldiers during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. The following year he played a tongue-in-cheek version of Sonny Corleone in the comedy “Honeymoon in Vegas.”

He introduced himself to a new generation playing Walter, the workaholic, stone-faced father of Will Ferrell’s Buddy in “Elf.”

Time to circle some top local games to watch

The IHSA released its statewide football schedule Thursday. These will be the top matchups to watch in DeKalb County over the nine-week regular season.

Week 1: DeKalb (2-7 in 2021) vs.

Sycamore (9-4) at NIU Huskie Stadium, 7 p.m. Aug. 26 These nearby rivals get the chance to start the season under the lights where Northern Illinois plays, which always makes for a fun atmosphere for players and fans. Sycamore, a Class 5A semifinalist last season, will try to get revenge against DeKalb after last season’s 23-16 overtime loss. DeKalb will once again want to start the season on a high note with a nonconference win.

Week 2: Geneva (6-5) at Kaneland (5-5), 7 p.m. Sept. 2 Two teams who qualified for the

postseason with five wins last season will try to use that success and build off it this year. Kaneland ended its playoff run in the first round against Class 5A state champion Fenwick while Geneva lost to Collinsville in the second round in Class 7A. Both teams will be looking to pick up critical nonconference wins early in the season.

Week 3: Kaneland at Morris (10-1), 7 p.m. Sept. 9 Kaneland will start its conference slate by trying to end a two-game losing streak against Morris. Morris was one of two teams to hand Kaneland a conference loss last season and in order for Knights to win the Kishwaukee River/ Interstate 8 White division, they’ll need to pick up a critical early win.

Week 4: Byron (14-0) at GenoaKingston (10-2), 7 p.m. Sept. 16 Genoa-Kingston had this game circled as soon as the schedule came out.

Bryon handed Genoa-Kingston its only regular season loss, and this game could decide the winner of the Big Northern Conference. The Cogs

will need this win as they try to advance further than their Class 4A quarterfinal appearance last season.

Week 5: DeKalb at Naperville North (6-4), 7 p.m. Sept. 23 The Barbs will face a critical game early in their DuPage Valley schedule after going winless in conference play last season. After opening against Metea Valley in Week 4, DeKalb will face Naperville North, which won the DVC last season. Watch for this early conference battle as one that could decide a lot as the season progresses.

Week 6: Kaneland at Sycamore, 7 p.m. Sept. 30 The Knights and the Spartans will face each other in a critical game for positioning in the Kishwaukee River/ Interstate 8 White division. Sycamore finished second and Kaneland finished third last season, and this game could determine whether a Sycamore finale against Morris is for a title.

Week 7: Dixon (6-4) at GenoaKingston, 7 p.m. Oct. 7

The Cogs will face an important, almost must-win situation when they take on Dixon. If they beat Byron earlier in the season, they hold their own destiny to a division title. If they lost, they’ll need to pick up a critical win for positioning in the conference.

Either way, this game should have a lot at stake.

Week 8: Neuqua Valley (10-2) at DeKalb, 7 p.m. Oct. 14 DeKalb will get a late-season test that could determine whether it will play in the postseason. The Barbs will face a tough team that played in the Class 7A quarterfinal round last season, but it could present a good opportunity for DeKalb to show how good it is.

Week 9: Morris at Sycamore, 7 p.m.

Schedules released; number of playoff-eligible teams holds

ssoucie@shawmedia.com The precipitous decline of playoff-eligible schools in 11-man football for the IHSA has reached an impasse for now at least.

For the first time in over a decade, there currently is no drop in the number of teams eligible to compete in the postseason as the number of teams sent to compete held firm at 494 teams.

Those 494 teams now have their road maps in trying to reach the state finals, which this year will be held at the University of Illinois in Champaign. The IHSA released the full 2022 season schedule Thursday.

It also might be the last year U of I hosts the finals, with the IHSA seeking bids for a venue capable of hosting the finals every year for a five-year term.

Illinois can currently only host the finals every other year and has been trading seasons with Northern Illinois because of a Big Ten scheduling conflict. That decision likely will be announced around the time the state finals are contested in late November.

The primary reason the number of participating teams held was that there was a major change in the way that the Chicago Public League decided to structure itself for the 2022 season.

Last season, and for several previous seasons, CPL schools were divided into divisions of six teams. In 2021, the CPL had 48 teams that started the season eligible for postseason play.

Also in past seasons, Week 9 of the regular season served as the opening round of the CPL playoffs with teams’ opponents not declared until after the conclusion of Week 8 games.

This season, the CPL will have 52 teams which are eligible for the postseason with seven divisions. Five of those divisions will have eight teams and play seven divisional games with two nonconference games, while two divisions will have six teams and playing additional crossover games against the other six-team division to fill the schedule.

The opening round CPL playoff matchups have been pushed into the “postseason” with qualifying teams playing after their IHSA playoff stints have ended. It will also allow for more clarity in how the playoff fields will be constructed.

Additionally, CPL-playoff eligible teams changed a bit as well with Harlan, Lindblom, Noble Street/Johnson, Orr, Prosser, Solorio and Washington losing playoff-eligible status. Corliss, Crane, Dyett, Little Village, Noble Street/Hansberry, Noble Street/Pritzker, Noble Street/Rowe-Clark, Noble

With the CPL jumping the number of eligible teams up by four, it balances out the other four programs that no longer have 11-man football teams set to play this season.

• Cambridge-Ridgewood (0-9 last season) has dropped into the 8-man football ranks. The Lincoln Trail Conference now has eight teams rather than nine because of the defection.

• East Dubuque (3-6) now is in a cooperative agreement with a school in Wisconsin. The Northwest Upstate Illini, which as recently as a few years ago had two full divisions of schools, has now dwindled in membership to nine teams.

• Sandwich (0-9) recently announced that it would not be playing a varsity schedule this season. The Kishwaukee River/Interstate 8 Blue Division now has six members, and as of this moment just a few of the teams on Sandwich’s canceled schedule have been able to find replacement games.

Teams will receive forfeit wins over Sandwich if they cannot.

• Westmont (1-8), which has struggled with participation numbers for several seasons, does not appear on the IHSA’s master schedule. Six of Westmont’s opponents already have found other opponents to play, but three have declined to fill the date at this point.

As of Thursday, 16 teams have been unable to fill all weeks of their schedule. One team, Aurora Central Catho-

lic, currently has two openings as it had scheduled both Westmont and Sandwich.

Teams with vacancies on their schedules currently are: Week: Teams missing game Week 1: Aurora Central Catholic, Bradley-Bourbonnais, Dunbar, Proviso East Week 2: Dunbar, East Moline United, Loyola, UCCS-Woodlawn Week 3: Plano Week 4: Richmond-Burton Week 5: Johnsburg Week 6: Lena-Winslow, Thornton Week 7: Nokomis Week 8: Fenwick, Marengo Week 9: Aurora Central Catholic Several teams also needed to add teams from outside Illinois to fill their slates with 37 out-of-state opponents on this year’s schedule. As is its custom, East St. Louis used all of its nonconference dates to play out-of-state opponents, including an interesting trip to play national power St. Frances Academy out of Baltimore to kick off the 2022 campaign. Loyola also is locking horns with a national power, as it hosts St. Xavier out of Cincinnati to kick off its schedule.

Missouri (11 opponents) and Wisconsin (10 opponents) lead the way on out-of-state opponents while Indiana (8), Kentucky (3), Michigan (2), Maryland (1), Ohio (1) and Georgia (1) round out the list.

There are no new conferences this season. The Chicago Public League assigned new names to its divisions changing to a color/directional label

system similar to what is used in basketball. Notable changes on the horizon are a realignment of the CCL/ ESCC to accommodate for recent success patterns and the addition of new/ returning teams, the debut of the Chicagoland Christian Conference and the merger of the Lincoln Trail and Prairieland Conferences. All of these moves are slated for the 2023-24 season.

Marian Central currently is incorrectly listed as a member of the CCL/ ESCC Red Division. The Hurricanes have left the league, although they still play both remaining members in what now are nonconference games. They are one of only 13 schools with no conference affiliation.

Enrollment numbers will remain the same for the 2022 season and no schools will be subjected to the success formula. Four schools will complete their two-year term of electing to play up in classification: Loyola (playing up to 8A), East St. Louis (6A), IC Catholic (3A) and Joliet Catholic [if enrollment places the Hilltoppers in 3A, they will voluntarily play in 4A]. Only nine schools (Brother Rice, Marist, Mount Carmel, St. Rita, St. Teresa, Nazareth, Quincy Notre Dame, Rockford Boylan and Newman Central Catholic) face multipliers to their enrollment. Those numbers will be re-evaluated in the offseason for the next two-year enrollment classifications, set to be implemented for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

The ranks of 8-man football expanded once again. Now at an alltime high of 29 teams, up from 24 last season, the 8-man association has divided into five smaller regions as opposed to the north/south breakdown it utilized last season.

Aforementioned Cambridge-Ridgewood joined 8-man from the 11-man ranks, Schlarman and Rockford Christian Life are returning to the 8-man mix after taking at least a season off, while Harvest Christian and Parkview Christian have instituted brand new programs.

Another interesting wrinkle of the schedule is a growing number of regular-season games scheduled for Thursday. There currently are 93 games slated to kick off on Thursday nights.

The custom is somewhat common in the Chicago Public League, and about two-thirds of those 93 games still are Chicago Public League games.

But that still leaves about 30 games already scheduled – and likely to increase – for Thursdays, which is well above the norm. The prospect for that number to increase certainly exists with a very real officiating shortage starting to cut into the availability of Friday night crews.

shammond@shawmedia.com The 23-person Museum Campus committee organized by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot released its 51-page report Thursday, which includes numerous recommended changes to improve Soldier Field and the surrounding area.

Top priorities include seeking out a naming rights sponsorship for the stadium and exploring the feasibility of enclosing the stadium with a roof. They are listed as actions that should be explored within the next year.

These improvements – still only ideas at this point – are an effort to entice the Bears to remain at the historic Chicago stadium. The Bears have played at Soldier Field since 1971. They are currently exploring an opportunity to build a brand new stadium in suburban Arlington Heights at the former site of Arlington International Racecourse.

In September, the Bears agreed to a $197.2 million purchase agreement with Churchill Downs Inc., which currently owns the 326-acre Arlington Heights property. The Bears previously said a sale won’t become official until late 2022 or early 2023.

Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips said in January that the team’s “focus for long-term development is exclusively on that property in Arlington Park.”

Lightfoot has been critical of the Bears’ interest in Arlington Heights from the beginning. In a statement released more than a year ago, Lightfoot said the bid was “clearly a negotiating tactic” and told the Bears to “focus on

Since then, the Arlington Heights bid has only become more serious. Lightfoot created the Museum Campus committee in February in an effort to reimagine Soldier Field and the surrounding area.

The committee wrote that “although enclosing Soldier Field would incur significant investment, further analysis is required to fully understand the specific costs, the potential direct and indirect economic impacts, and the full range of potential funding sources available to determine options that are respectful to Chicago taxpayers.”

Adding a roof to the stadium could provide more opportunities for concerts in the winter, as well as chances to host the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four.

Chicago has never hosted either event.

For naming rights inspiration, the

committee pointed toward New Orleans, where the Caesars Superdome was able to obtain a sponsorship and keep the original “Superdome” name in its title.

Recent stadium naming rights deals such as SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas have garnered more than $400 million in value.

As far as the game day experience, the committee wrote that “updating the stadium’s current seating configuration is imperative.” The committee recommends exploring new stadium boxes and clubs, and diversifying the mix of available spaces. The report mentions more relaxed environments with couches and lounging areas. Many newer NFL stadiums have field-level suites with such relaxed environments.

“Additional conventional seating, therefore, should focus more on maintaining existing capacity rather than sig-

nificantly increasing it,” the report states.

The committee recommends expanding the stadium’s concourses, concessions, washrooms and retail areas. It notes that the Soldier Field concourse is “among the smallest in the NFL.” Outside the stadium, the committee wants to explore returning Northerly Island to a nature area. That would make it necessary to move the Huntington Bank Pavilion concert venue. The committee recommends building a new outdoor concert venue on the grassy hill between Soldier Field and the Field Museum. The committee also wants to explore the potential for a Soldier Field visitors center or a Bears Hall of Fame, plus the possibility of including an in-person sports betting lounge.

“Our beloved Museum Campus is an essential part of this city and requires special attention and care,” Lightfoot said in a statement released Thursday.

“The Museum Campus working group has provided us with a useful framework to guide that work, as well as to enhance the Campus overall. This report will also ensure our vision is aligned when it comes to creating a more enriching and rewarding Museum Campus experience for all who visit.”

The big question now is whether these potential changes are enough to keep the Bears in the city. The benefits of Arlington Heights could outweigh any changes to Soldier Field. The team could fully customize the entire Arlington Heights location, both the stadium and the surrounding area, plus it could own the stadium.

The team’s lease with Soldier Field runs through 2033, but the organization could pay a penalty to end the lease early.

TOP 25 MOST IMPORTANT BEARS IN 2022: NO. 12 JAQUAN BRISKER

2nd-round pick Brisker could be just what Bears’ secondary needs

What makes one player more important than another? That’s subjective, of course. But for our purposes it comes down to this: Are the Bears worse off if this player can’t play? Does this player have untapped potential or past greatness to live up to? Is his story going to be one fans follow closely this season?

For example, Justin Fields might not be the best player on the Bears in 2022 (or maybe he will be), but he certainly is among the most important.

No. 12 Jaquan Brisker Position: Safety NFL experience: Rookie Last year’s ranking: N/A Looking back: It wasn’t too much of a surprise when new Bears general manager Ryan Poles selected a cornerback, Kyler Gordon, with his first draft pick in April. The Bears drafted Gordon in the second round with the 39th overall pick. It was a surprise, however, when the Bears went back to the secondary with their second pick at 48th overall and selected safety Jaquan Brisker out of Penn State. Poles said later that night that the Bears had a chance to pick up two surefire starters for their defense. That was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Brisker comes to Chicago after three seasons as a ball-hawking safety for the Nittany Lions. In three seasons, he had five interceptions and 14 passes defended. He grew up near Pittsburgh and started his college career at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania, before transferring to his dream school. The Bears drafted Brisker with a second-round pick they acquired in the trade for former pass rusher Khalil Mack.

Looking forward: The Bears believe Brisker could be what this secondary needs. An aggressive safety like Brisker should give veteran safety Eddie Jackson the freedom to do what he does best – play deep and keep the whole field in front of him. With Gor-

don and Brisker both likely jumping into the starting lineup, the secondary could be the Bears’ most improved position group.

Brisker should fit right into head coach Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 defensive scheme. He will likely step up into the box more than Jackson. Brisker isn’t afraid to guard a tight end or a bigger receiver if necessary. He already has impressed his coaches with his eagerness to punch at the football.

For a defense that didn’t create enough turnovers in 2021, that is exactly what the Bears need. If Brisker has the type of rookie season the Bears think he is capable of, there’s reason to be optimistic about this year’s defense.

Blackhawks begin dismantling, trade DeBrincat and Dach

The long-anticipated dismantling of the Blackhawks’ roster begun Thursday with the team trading Alex DeBrincat to the Ottawa Senators and Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens.

The Hawks acquired the seventh and 39th picks in this year’s draft and a third-rounder in 2024 for DeBrincat, who is likely a year away from a big payday. The Hawks used that pick on Canadian defenseman Kevin Korchinski minutes after acquiring No. 13 from Montreal for Dach, a restricted free agent.

Dealing DeBrincat signals a shift into win-soon mode for the Senators, while the Hawks moved even further away from contending again a year after making moves like acquiring defenseman Seth Jones and Marc-Andre Fleury.

“I think they’re trying to do something that maybe we were trying to do a few years ago,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said at the draft in Montreal. “Now we’re trying to do something that a lot of teams were trying to do, and that’s win a lot of hockey games.”

With a lot of losses coming up next season and beyond, the attention now turns to the future of longtime Blackhawks stars and three-time Stanley Cup-winners Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane, whose matching contracts expire after next season.

They already gained some financial flexibility by trading DeBrincat, who is expected to attract a hefty raise once his current deal expires after the 202223 season.

DeBrincat, 24, has one year left on a $19.2 million, three-year contract, after which he is eligible to become a restricted free agent. Dorion said the Senators expect to start extension talks with DeBrincat’s agent next week when league rules allow them but added the team wants to make sure he’s a good fit in coach D.J. Smith’s system.

“Obviously, we would like to extend him at some point in time,” Dorion said. “He was pretty excited. He talked to both myself and DJ earlier, and he

was really excited. He knows we’ve got a really good, young group of players.”

The Hawks didn’t have a first-round pick entering the draft.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision to trade a player of Alex’s caliber.

We feel as if this move sets the Blackhawks up for future success by giving us additional flexibility and future talent,” Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson said in a statement.

“Securing this early of a first-round pick for tonight and an additional second-round selection tomorrow allows us to fortify our prospect base with high-end players who we expect to be a difference-makers in the coming years.”

The trade comes with the Hawks

Moore was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of weapons, per KXII.

The DeBrincat deal will create more questions for longtime Hawks stars Toews and Kane.

Toews and Kane – still one of the league’s most dynamic players at age 33 – have no-movement clauses, making a trade unlikely unless they ask for a change in scenery. But DeBrincat’s departure could prompt Kane or Toews to seek a new home.

DeBrincat was selected by the Hawks in the second round of the 2016 draft. He put up big numbers with the OHL’s Erie Otters in juniors, but he slipped down some draft boards because of his height at 5-foot-7.

Those concerns turned out to be unfounded.

DeBrincat has been one of the NHL’s most prolific scorers since his debut with the Hawks in 2017. The winger matched his career high with 41 goals this past season and set a career best with 37 assists in 82 games.

Overall, he has 160 goals and 147 assists in 368 games.

But the Michigan native also has improved on the defensive end, becoming a more well-rounded player since entering the league.

He joins a burgeoning Senators roster that already features a collection of promising youngsters including Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle.

Northern Illinois athletics releases 2022 Hall of Fame class

By DAILY CHRONICLE The Northern Illinois athletics department announced the 2022 class for its Hall of Fame on Tuesday, featuring seven former student-athletes.

Amy Foulke (volleyball, 1990-93), Thomas Hammock (football, 19992002), Chandler Harnish (football 2008-11), Kristin Hoffman (volleyball, 2008-11), Sandra Lutz (field hockey, softball and volleyball, 1966-70), Scott Simon (baseball, 2003-07) and Chad Spann (football, 2007-10) all will be inducted. They will be joined by coach and administrator Robert Collins, special contributor Rick Cerrone and the Barsema, Chessick, Rich and Yordon families.

The induction will take place Oct. 7 as part of Northern Illinois’ 115th homecoming weekend celebration.

More information about the ceremony will be available later in the summer.

A larger than usual class was selected this year because of last year’s postponement because of uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With this bigger class due to COVID, we feel that we have selected an elite class that represents the best of Huskie Athletics,” Hall of Fame committee chairman Rodney Davis said in a news release. “We are very excited to induct this group into the Hall of Fame, and we hope that the entire NIU community will join us for the celebration.”

Foulke is the NIU career leader in blocks and matches played on the volleyball court. She was a key part of the volleyball program’s success in the early 1990s, which included three postseason appearances in her four seasons.

Hammock, the current head football coach, recorded two 1,000-yard rushing seasons as a running back.

He finished his playing career as the seventh all-time leading rusher in program history with 2,432 yards and

currently is 13th on that list.

Harnish is NIU’s career leader in passing yards and is in the top 10 in rushing yards. His 11,927 yards of total offense are the most in school history. That number includes his 8,944 career passing yards. As a senior in 2011, he was the Mid-American Conference MVP. Hoffman is one of only four Huskies volleyball players ever to earn All-America honors. She ranks third in NIU history in career assists. She helped guide NIU to the NCAA tournament as a senior in 2011.

Lutz was a standout field hockey goalie at NIU in the late 1960s, while also excelling on the volleyball court and the softball field. In field hockey, she was a three-time Midwest College Field Hockey Association All-College First Team honoree.

Simon is the baseball team’s career leader in hits (318), RBIs (193) and doubles (69). He was a First Team Freshman All-American in 2003 and hit over .300 all four years he played at NIU. Spann ranks second in school history with 49 career touchdowns and 10th with 2,916 rushing yards on the football field. He was a two-time First Team All-MAC performer.

Collins served as men’s basketball assistant coach for three seasons in the late 1980s. He returned to DeKalb in 1992 as an administrator. He served in various roles, including interim athletic director in 2008. He oversaw the expansion and renovation of numerous athletic facilities.

After graduating from NIU, Cerrone worked as a writer, editor and media relations specialist in pro baseball. He was the Senior Director of Media Relations for the New York Yankees from 1996-2006. In 2018, he became the Editor in Chief of Baseball Digest.

The Barsema, Chessick, Rich and Yordon families are being honored for the support they have given to the athletic department over the years.

Research is scarce, and people’s experiences vary. Some say they are unaffected by the prep, and some experience a mild flare. Others report that their symptoms of IBS go away altogether for several weeks after the bowel is cleansed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that colonoscopy prep has made great strides in recent years. The gallon of liquid once required is now often just two small bottles.

There is evidence that splitting the dose, with half consumed the night before the procedure and half the morning of, is easier on the gut. Each colonoscopy center has its own protocols, and you can check for the one you are most comfortable with.

Your reluctance to undergo a colonoscopy due to the potential effects of the prep is understandable, but it’s important to look at the big picture. The benefits of screening for colon cancer outweigh the risk of an IBS flare. A colonoscopy can identify precancerous polyps, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. When colorectal cancers are found early, they are highly treatable. And with normal results, you won’t need another colonoscopy for 10 years.

Dear Doctors: My internist has recommended a colonoscopy. I dread having it, though, because I’m concerned about the liquid laxative prep it requires. I suffer from IBS, which is often painful. Is it possible that the prep will provoke a severe IBS occurrence, or might it make my condition worse?

Dear Reader: You’ve asked a challenging question and, unfortunately, there is no clear-cut answer. To explain why, let’s begin with some background.

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder that causes pain, discomfort and dysfunction in the large intestine. In addition to cramping, bloating, gas and abdominal pain, people with IBS experience ongoing episodes of diarrhea or constipation, and often both. There is no cure, which makes it a chronic condition.

Although the specific cause of the syndrome is not clear, recent research has linked it to certain changes that take place in the population of the gut microbiome.

The vast majority of the microbiota that comprise the gut microbiome reside in the colon, which is also referred to as the large intestine. This is the portion of the gastrointestinal tract that is examined during a colonoscopy.

In order to perform an effective colonoscopy, the large intestine, which is where the body’s solid waste collects, must be free of all debris. That’s the only way for abnormalities to be visible. This necessitates the so-called colonoscopy prep, which entails a brief change of diet followed by the use of a laxative drink to completely void the bowel.

It’s here that the requirements of colonoscopy prep bump up against the challenges of IBS. While cleansing the bowel provides the clear field of vision needed to identify potential cancers, it also affects the intestinal flora. Studies show that this process alters the numbers, diversity and stability of the populations of microbes living in the gut, and that it takes several weeks for the microbiome to recover. How this

I Phillips was out of state for a month (my husband was home) when two of them were dognapped, driven 42 miles away and abandoned in the wilderness. I suspected who had done it right away, but when I heard where the dogs had been abandoned, I knew without a doubt. We were lucky: One dog was microchipped, which eventually led him back to us. Both were cared for by rescue foundations until I could bring them home.

The person who did it is our son’s girlfriend -and the mother of his child. We are appalled and feel betrayed and sickened. My son admitted he knew she had done it. He showed remorse and gave a heartfelt apology. She has completely avoided us, with no admission or apology.

Should we press charges for stealing our dogs and abandoning them? They live on our property in a home we own, and pay nothing to live here.

She and I used to be close. Now my husband and I no longer want to have her around. All trust is gone. Please advise me how to deal with this. threaten the girlfriend or your grandchild? If the answer is yes, then those animals present a danger.

DEAR ABBY: I recently lost my precious husband of 43 years to COVID-19. Needless to say, this is a very painful time for me. He pointed out that a person can be “greedy for the property of others, extravagant with his own.” That sums up the declarer in today’s deal rather well.

West opened the attack against three no-trump with the heart jack. Declarer won on the board, played a diamond to his queen and led a second diamond. West’s discard was irritating.

East won this trick and switched to the spade jack. South had to finesse, but when it lost and West returned a spade, South could do no better than win seven tricks.

South said, “The textbooks are right. Once I knew West was long in hearts, I should have played for East to be long in diamonds. I would have made an overtrick.”

It is true that that is often a reliable guideline, but South had overlooked the danger in a spade shift from East.

With six winners in the other suits, only three tricks were needed from diamonds. South could afford to concede two diamond tricks as long as he didn’t lose control of another suit while establishing the diamonds.

The guaranteed play is to finesse through East for the diamond jack at trick two. Even if West can win with the jack, he cannot hurt South with a spade switch. Whatever happens, declarer must end with at least nine tricks.

South had greedily hoped to lose only one diamond trick, but he had been too extravagant with his own resources in the suit.
