Suspected U.S. drone strike Saturday kills 3 alleged al-Qaida in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen – Suspected U.S. drone strikes have killed three alleged al-Qaida operatives in Yemen’s southwestern Bayda province, security and tribal officials said, the first such killings reported in the country since Donald Trump assumed the U.S. presidency Friday.

The two Saturday strikes killed Abu Anis alAbi, an area field commander, and two others, they said, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information to journalists.

U.S. drone strikes against suspected al-Qaida targets have been commonplace in the years since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on New York and Washington, as a retaliatory measure against the group. The use of unmanned aircraft as well as air strikes in the Arab world’s poorest country rose dramatically under President Barack Obama, with data from the Britain-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism showing spikes in attacks, especially in 2012 and 2016.

On Thursday, U.S. intelligence officials said as many as 117 civilians had been killed in drone and other counterterror attacks in Pakistan, Yemen and elsewhere during Obama’s presidency. It was the second public assessment issued in response to mounting pressure for more information about lethal U.S. operations overseas.

Human rights and other groups have criticized the Obama administration, saying it has undercounted civilian casualties.

They also worry that President Trump will

more aggressively conduct drone strikes, which are subject to little oversight from Congress or the judiciary.

In the years since the drone program began, Yemen has fallen ever deeper into chaos. A twoyear-old civil war began after Shiite Houthis rebels seized the capital Sanaa and forced the president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, to flee the country. In March 2015, a Saudi-led military coalition launched an extensive air campaign aimed at restoring Hadi’s government.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, long seen by Washington as among the most dangerous branches of the global terror network, exploited the chaos, seizing territory in the country’s south and east, and the Islamic State group has also claimed attacks. The northern region remains under Houthi control.

On Sunday, Mwatana, one of Yemen’s top human rights groups, released a documentary on civilian victims of drone strikes, interviewing family members who say their relatives were innocent and they had received no compensation from the U.S. despite their wrongful deaths.

It cited much higher civilian death tolls than the U.S. intelligence report, saying that hundreds of innocents had been killed by the U.S. strikes across the country since at least 2002.

In one segment from Bayda, the same province where Saturday’s drone strikes hit, Ali Abedrabbo Ahmed said his 17-year old son was only a simple construction worker killed while he was going to work in a pickup truck with colleagues in 2014, an incident other witnesses corroborated in the video.

DeKalb County families celebrate Winterfest

news@daily-chronicle.com It certainly didn’t feel like January on Saturday, but the unseasonably warm temperatures didn’t stop DeKalb County families and local scout troops from celebrating the season at Winterfest at the Russell Woods Forest Preserve in Genoa.

Children dipped candles, made winter crafts, hiked along the trails and enjoyed horse-drawn wagon rides at the annual event sponsored by the University of Illinois Extension.

Peggy Doty, educator at the University of Illinois Extension, said the event is a good way for families to get outside and enjoy winter activities, even if there is no snow on the ground. She said she thought the lack of snow would be a deterrent, but she was pleased with Saturday’s turnout.

“It’s been very good today; everyone is having a lot of fun,” she said Saturday. “Once winter hits we tend to stay indoors, and this re-invests families in the season. This is educational, recreational and not expensive. It’s handson, experiential learning. Kids don’t have to love everything in nature, but they need to understand it. We have a responsibility to understand the environment.”

Carolyn Beckett of DeKalb brings her children to many of the activities at the forest preserve, and she said she was excited to bring them to Winterfest for the first time.

“We wanted to check out what they have going on today,” she said. “We’re excited for the hike and scavenger hunt.

The kids love being out here and being in nature.”

Kim Colness brought her grandchildren, and although she was disappointed there was no snow, she said the kids still were having a blast.

“It’s a beautiful day to be outside, and the kids love to be in nature. And they’re loving all the crafts,” she said.

Carol Bushong, a volunteer and steward for the DeKalb County Forest Preserve, said it’s important for kids to make a connection with the outdoors while enjoying some fresh air.

“Who wouldn’t want to be outside today? It’s beautiful,” she said. “A lot of kids have no idea about what’s happening in forests or with water. They need to connect with nature.”

This is the second time Caroline Collins of Cortland brought her daughter, Elora, 2, to Winterfest.

“I like to get her outside because it’s very healthy for her. This event also gives kids a chance to see things they normally don’t see,” she said.

Making candles also was a big hit with the children. Volunteer Chris Handel said this year there seemed to be more of an interest in learning how to make them.

Her mother, Michelle Helgeson, said her family likes to participate in the many events at Russell Woods.

“It’s not very wintry today, but it’s very festive,” she said. “I love all the different activities they have here, as well as the discussions about the animals that are here. We just love to do anything outside or in nature.”

Connie Handel, a community worker with the University of Illinois Extension, said Winterfest is a fun celebration of nature that has been held on the third Saturday in January for many years.

“We have been busier today than we normally are, so I think the nice weather had an impact,” she said. “It’s just good to see a lot of people getting outside.”

The Women’s March and our call to action VIEWS Elizabeth Neukirch When I arrived at the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday, I was wearing one item I hadn’t brought with me: a white and pink beaded bracelet with F-E-M-I-N-I-S-T spelled out in block letters. A girl no more than 9 years old made the bracelet. She traded with my group of friends for some pink hats one of us made for the March.

I thought of this moment throughout the day. Because of massive crowds in the D.C. metro system, we arrived late and missed the speech given by feminist icon and honorary march co-chair Gloria Steinem. I had always hoped to see Steinem speak. In fact, before Saturday I would have said it was one of the top things I was looking forward to at the march.

Yet this event made me realize this movement is more about that young girl than those who came before us. Feminism is our responsibility now. We are the ones who must champion and protect women’s rights. While Steinem, Audre Lorde, Angela Davis and countless others led the way for decades, now is our time to take action and get organized.

Given that nearly half a million people attended the Women’s March on Washington, it is clear people are ready to accept this charge.

The scale of the march is significant. It was nearly five times the number of people who lived in DeKalb County as of the 2015 Census. It was people standing shoulder-to-shoulder, filling the streets and sidewalks and national parkland for miles, a sea of marchers stretching to the horizon.

Yet there were zero arrests. People came from across the nation and world to march in D.C. (I personally saw contingents from Canada and Iceland) and from incredibly diverse backgrounds, all with intentions of solidarity, sisterhood and shared values.

This was a textbook example of why the First Amendment exists.

We the people came to peacefully assemble and exercise our right to free speech.

We also came together, as the First Amendment states, to “peti-

The Women’s March on Washington was a reminder to our new lawmakers on their first day in office that we will not stand for misogynistic or otherwise divisive discourse and policymaking. We are prepared to mobilize in support of all human rights causes that intersect with our diverse identities as women and Americans.

And we are not alone. Marches held in solidarity with the D.C. event occurred in more than 600 cities across the nation and world, from Chicago and Los Angeles to London, Paris and Cape Town.

These are not just individual protests; this is the beginning of a new movement for feminism. It has long been stirring in that place just beyond our line of sight; in the recesses of hearts that have been broken by inequities but yearn to

fight and love again; and in the fervent human rights activists across this nation who for too long have waited for a linchpin moment to come together across physical and demographic divides.

Marching on Saturday, I saw signs that read “Act Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly With Your God” and “Education Not Deportation” and “Black Lives Matter” and “Reproductive Freedom for All” and “Gun Violence Is A Women’s Issue” and “Respect Existence or Expect Resistance.”

I saw innumerable fathers holding the hands of their daughters. I saw a New Orleans brass band of every skin color dressed in jumpsuits with a brick wall pattern, playing joyous music and dancing through the masses.

I saw two Asian toddlers in their parents’ arms lead a call-andresponse chant (“Show me what democracy looks like!”) in their tiny voices, with the roar of adults echoing back in reply (“This is what democracy looks like!”).

ment. Thousands of us continued on, assembling on the lawn and streets surrounding the White House.

I found myself near a woman with a megaphone who was leading segments of the crowd in various chants. Another woman approached my group. She was alone. She asked whether we would like to start singing “The Star Spangled Banner” with her to try to get the crowd to join in. We approached the woman with the megaphone and requested her help. Then we all started singing our national anthem, projecting our voices to the rest of the crowd, and hundreds of people joined in, our voices filling the air, spilling out across the lawn in front of the house that symbolizes our democracy.

We are all in this together.

Lucille Hope Cole, nee Turner, age 80, a resident of DeKalb, and formerly a longtime resident of Wheaton, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18. She was born November 13, 1936 in Los Angeles to Donald and Faith Turner.

She is survived by her husband, Richard; Susan (Randy) Hands of Wheaton, Mark (Ping) Cole of Taiwan, Donna Cole of TX, Kathryn Cole of WA and Beth (Kyle) Kinzer of VA; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild and one expected. She is also survived by her sister, Alegria (Joy) Tuggy; and her brother, Glen Turner; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Ruth Berger.

Shirley A. Justice, 72, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, January 19, 2017, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center in DeKalb.

She was born December 22, 1944, in Glasgow, Kentucky, the daughter of Paul H. and Mildred P. (Jones) Spencer, Shirley married Larry R. Justice on August 6, 1964 in DeKalb, Illinois.

Shirley Graduated DeKalb High School Class of 1963. She was the co-owner and manager of DeKalb Credit Union Service Center with her sister, Donna; she was an avid gardener and enjoyed her grandchildren and great granddaughter’s activities.

She is survived by her daughter, Jacinda Shaffer of Machesney Park; two grandsons, Matthew Justice, Kristopher Shaffer; one

great granddaughter, Anna Marie Justice; sister, Donna Johnson of DeKalb; brother, Terry Spencer of DeKalb; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry in 2009; one great granddaughter, Jasmine Justice; son-in-law, David Shaffer; and her parents.

Stuckert set the matter for a status review Jan. 30.

At the time he filed the motion, Schmack said video evidence contradicted statements made both by DeKalb County prosecutors and by Seattle Police Detective Irene Lau in pretrial proceedings and McCullough’s September 2012 trial.

“Any prosecution of Detective Lau would almost certainly involve inquiry into the handling of the entire investigation and prosecution of Jack D. McCullough, and such inquiry would clearly involve interviews with past, and perhaps current, employees of the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office,” Schmack wrote in the request. “… There exists an actual conflict of interest in said office investigating its own conduct, since such an investigation could conceivably lead to wrong-

doing by others beyond the allegations against Detective Lau.” DeKalb County State’s Attorney Rick Amato, who unseated Schmack in the November election, said that because the request mentioned “current employees” of the office, he couldn’t investigate it, either. He said it would be up to a judge – rather than his office – to find an attorney to take the case.

McCullough was freed last April, his conviction vacated and the charges against him dismissed after Schmack determined that phone records and FBI documents from 1957 and 1958 proved McCullough was in Rockford and could not have been in Sycamore on Dec. 3, 1957, at the time Ridulph was abducted from the corner of Archie Place and Center Cross Street, near her home.

McCullough is seeking a certificate of innocence from a judge. That matter is due in court for a status hearing Jan. 30.

SYCAMORE – Allegations of police perjury and other possible wrongdoing in the prosecution of Jack D. McCullough are going uninvestigated because no one is willing to take the case, records show.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office and prosecutors from nine Illinois counties have declined to look into the allegations, which arose last year after McCullough’s conviction was vacated in the 1957 murder of Maria Ridulph, 7, of Sycamore.

Former DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack asked a DeKalb County judge in August to have a special prosecutor investigate whether a Seattle police detective committed perjury, as well as other possible police misconduct in the prosecution of McCullough.

In response to a request for a sta-

tus update on progress in that case, DeKalb County Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert filed documents showing her efforts to find someone to take the case.

Stuckert wrote to the Attorney General’s Office and prosecutors in Kendall, Ogle, Lake, Winnebago and Kane counties in August asking whether they would act as a special prosecutor.

None took the case.

In October, the judge reached out to prosecutors in Boone, Whiteside, Bureau and Lee counties.

Again, there were no takers. Several prosecutors who responded to the request cited limited resources for turning it down.

The judge is required by state law to first ask public agencies to serve as a special prosecutor at no cost to the county before appointing a private attorney, according to the judge’s letters.

Researcher turning science fiction into reality

BLOOMINGTON – When Gabe Spalding talks about time traveling light waves, holograms and tractor beams, it might sound like the stuff of science fiction.

But the research being done by Spalding, Illinois Wesleyan University’s Ames professor of physics, has potential down-to-earth applications – from helping doctors see inaccessible parts of the body to helping motorists see through fog.

The fog issue is personal for Spalding. Years ago, his uncle, a milkman, drove his truck off the road in the fog.

The impact caused the milk containers to shift forward, crushing and nearly killing his uncle, recalled Spalding.

“The next generation of cars will have new ways to assist drivers,” he said.

In fact, Spalding said he is meeting soon with the CEO of Rivian Automotive, which last week finalized the purchase of former Mitsubishi auto assembly plant, to talk about student projects and internships.

Spalding does his research at IWU and with collaborators in Scotland, mostly engineers and surgeons. He involves his students in the work, too.

State treasurer seeks payout of unclaimed life insurance

PEORIA – A measure backed by Illinois’ treasurer could help ensure that insurance companies have paid out money properly to beneficiaries of life insurance policies.

The proposed legislation would require companies to examine the past 20 years of their records to ensure that money was distributed properly, the (Peoria) Journal Star reported.

State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said the measure is important for individuals who don’t know they have funds owed to them.

“We think there are tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars more that should be paid out to the loved ones, the heirs or beneficiaries, of Illinois life insurance holders,” Frerichs said.

Two were in Arizona last week presenting research papers at a conference.

One, Toan Le, a senior in physics from Vietnam, is working on the project that involves “seeing” through fog.

Le described it as reconstructing images of hidden objects.

“The project provides a wide range of application in biomedical as well as

in vision systems for self-driving cars and remote-imaging systems,” Le said via email from the conference.

“A lot of the applications do take a long time. You can’t be motivated just by the end goal,” said Spalding, explaining the challenges of his research. “The students that work on these things are equally motivated by little steps.”

Frerichs’ office has been working with about 20 of the largest companies that sell such policies in Illinois. So far, there has been about $500 million found in unpaid life insurance benefits.

Not all such companies cooperated with the efforts of the treasurer’s office.

Some of the insurance businesses weren’t responsive, and others told the office they didn’t want to participate.

Free tax preparation available to low-income residents

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois is offering free income tax preparation and filing for low-income residents.

Illinois Department of Human Services Secretary James Dimas said the services are available across the state to families with incomes up to $55,000 and individuals who earn up to $30,000 annually.

The service is a partnership between the state and tax assistance centers across Illinois.

Dimas said more than 29,000 people used the free service last year.

Judge: Ban on shackling child suspects adds costs

ROCKFORD – A chief judge in Northern Illinois said more officers are needed to comply with an Illinois Supreme Court rule banning the automatic shackling of juvenile suspects in state courtrooms.

The Rockford Register Star reported that Judge Joe McGraw is asking the Winnebago County Board to approve money to hire four additional officers.

McGraw said it will cost $50,000 to pay the officers through Sept. 30. After that the annual cost is estimated at $205,000.

McGraw said two officers are needed to accompany a juvenile in the courtroom and two to transport them between the detention center and downtown courtrooms.

Board member Gary Jury said the county doesn’t have the money.

He said the request is the result of another “unfunded state mandate” and may result in a tax increase.

In one of those recent steps, using specialized cameras, “We made a movie of something going backwards in time,” he said. At least, that’s what it appears to do.

The pulse of light used in the “time travel” experiment is about half the width of a single human hair. But to understand how it works, visualize a much wider beam shining up at a surface that’s at an angle.

The light will hit the lower end of the angled surface first, then “travel” to the upper end. But if a camera is positioned at that upper end, it will actually see the light at the upper end first, even though that light arrived later. This gives the appearance of moving backward.

If you shine a light on a convex surface – one curved outward toward you like a pillar in a building – the light will appear to move in two directions, away from each other. If the surface is concave – curved inward – the light will appear to move together and annihilate each other.

Spalding said these effects had been predicted, but nobody had ever done it before these high-speed cameras were used.

“The experiment demonstrates the capabilities of these cameras” and their ability “to look at processes too fast to see” otherwise, he said.

Normal council seeks legal opinion on 45-day gag rule

NORMAL – A central Illinois city that restricts speakers at council meetings is seeking advice from the state attorney general.

Normal limits speakers to one appearance every 45 days. City Manager Mark Peterson told The Pantagraph that the council likely will follow the attorney general’s opinion.

The restriction might violate the Illinois public meetings law.

Mayor Chris Koos said officials didn’t anticipate that some residents would have something to say at every meeting.

He calls it a “prudent rule.”

Council member Scott Preston said email might be a more effective way to reach the mayor and council, although he doesn’t see a need for the 45-day restriction.

Council member Kathleen Lorenz said the Bloomington council has a less restrictive policy and sometimes has trouble moving through the meeting agenda.

Amid hostile start, Trump delivers unifying message

WASHINGTON – After a combative start to his presidency, Donald Trump delivered a more unifying message Sunday and sought to reassure Americans he was ready to begin governing a divided nation.

Trump began rolling out his plans for diplomatic outreach, speaking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and announcing plans for early meetings with Netanyahu and other world leaders. He thanked top law enforcement officers for their service and support. And he swore-in a group of aides, telling them he believed they were ready to rise to a daunting task.

“But with the faith in each other and the faith in God, we will get the job done,” Trump said in a ceremony in the White House East Room. “We will prove worthy of this moment in history. And I think it may very well be a great moment in history.”

Trump’s reassurance came after a day marked by global protests against his presidency and his own complaints about media coverage of his inauguration, a combination of events that made for a contentious first full day in office on Saturday.

But even as the White House tried to forge forward, the president’s aides continued to defend the president and his press secretary, both of whom tore into journalists for accurately reporting that his swearing-in ceremony drew a smaller crowd than President Barack Obama did eight years ago. On Sunday, a top adviser said the Trump administration was supplying

“alternative facts.”

“There’s no way to really quantify crowds.

We all know that. You can laugh at me all you want,” Kellyanne Conway told NBC’s “Meet The Press.” She added: “I think it’s actually symbolic of the way we’re treated by the press.”

Trump on Saturday declared he believed “it looked like a million and a half people.”

But ridership on the Washington’s Metro system didn’t match that of recent inaugurations. As of 11 a.m. Friday, there were 193,000 trips taken, according to the transportation service’s Twitter account. At the same hour eight years ago, there had been 513,000 trips.

Four years later, there were 317,000 for Obama’s second inauguration.

Conway also declared that Trump will not release his tax returns now that he’s taken office, breaking a promise he made during the campaign.

As a candidate, he said he would release his returns after an IRS audit was completed. Every president since 1976 has released the information, but Conway said she does not believe Americans care whether Trump follows suit.

“He’s not going to release his tax returns.

We litigated this all through the election. People didn’t care,” Conway said on ABC’s “This Week.”

Trump’s advisers have set Monday up as the president’s first major day of action on his sweeping campaign promises, but as of Sunday night, it appeared as though his team was still making decisions on what moves to make.

Some congressional Republicans had expected Trump to sign orders over the weekend, but those never materialized.

Reject plan for huge tax hikes The Illinois Senate could vote as early as Wednesday on a budget bill supported by Democrats and even some Republicans, including Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno.

With lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner unable to come to terms on a full budget the past two fiscal years, some might consider that a good thing.

But then there are the details, which seem to be getting worse by the minute.

The Senate’s initial “compromise” budget proposed a 32 percent increase in the state’s income tax, from 3.75 percent to 4.95 percent.

An individual who makes $50,000 annually would pay an additional $625 to the state a year under this proposal.

But new reports from Chicago and Springfield on Friday said an amended proposal would raise the rate to 5.25 percent, a whopping 40 percent increase.

The latter proposal also would bring the state’s income tax to a higher level than former Gov. Pat Quinn’s 67 percent tax hike in 2011, which moved the rate from 3 percent to 5 percent before it scaled back to the current 3.75 percent in 2015.

The current proposal does not have a provision to scale back the increased income tax.

In addition to the income tax increases, the Senate plan, which ties a series of bills together, calls for a 33 percent corporate tax increase (from 5.25 percent to 7 percent), an increase in the minimum wage to $11, a twoyear property tax freeze and some modest pension and workers’ compensation reforms.

We’ve got to hand it to Senate leaders; they don’t discriminate. Their proposal is equally bad for middle-class wage earners and business owners.

“The Senate budget proposal is an absolute disaster,” said Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills. “Raising the income tax rate by 32 percent, or even up to 40 percent, would crush taxpayers. We need to cut spending, not raises taxes. This would be the final nail in the coffin of the state of Illinois. ... We lost 115,000 people [to outmigration] last year.

This will drive even more people out of the state.”

We urge state senators – including Sen. Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, and Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon – to reject this plan.

DAILY CHRONICLE The Sycamore VFW and Country Store & Catering invite the community to a fundraising dinner to benefit Pay-It-Forward House in Sycamore.

They will be serving an all-you-can-eat buffet dinner at the VFW, 121 S. California St., from 4 to 8 p.m. Feb. 3.

Tickets purchased in advance cost $13 for adults and $6 for children age 10 and younger.

Tickets will be available at the door at a cost of $14 for adults and $6 for children.

The menu will include barbecue chicken and rib tips, rotisserie pork sandwiches, country style baked beans, steakhouse potato salad, creamy apple coleslaw, rolls and dessert.

Pay-It-Forward House is a health care hospitality house that provides a supportive and caring homeaway-from-home for friends and family of patients receiving medical treatment in DeKalb County.

It is through the hospitality and generosity of local volunteers and donors that Pay-It-Forward House operates, and, like the VFW, not only serves those in need, but provides a source of volunteer opportunities and camaraderie for like-minded community members.

“We are delighted that the VFW has once again agreed to partner with us for this event,” Pay-ItForward House Executive Director Joyce Mathey said in a news release. “Their contributions to the quality of life in Sycamore set the example for organizations like ours who hope to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”

“Show and Tell” brings back fond memories for many people. On Thursday, Feb. 2, those memories can be relived at the Sycamore History Museum.

Brown bag lunches are at noon the first Thursday of the month at the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Freight Room, 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore. The program is free and open to the public; donations are welcome. Coffee and cookies are provided.

St. Mary’s School in Sycamore will begin its celebration of Catholic Schools Week with an open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Among the activities scheduled for the week are a visit from Sycamore’s Museum of Natural History, a family breakfast day, collection of goods for Safe Passage, annual spelling bee, school-wide talent show, and student/family participation in the liturgy at the weekend Masses.

The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, Jan. 29 through Feb. 4.

Lamb buffet scheduled for Feb. 4

The DeKalb County Lamb & Wool Producers will host its annual lamb buffet at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 4, at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau, 1350 W. Prairie Drive in Sycamore.

The buffet is open to the public.

The meal will be prepared by 5-B’s Catering and will feature carved leg of lamb, buttered corn, red potatoes, salad, dinner rolls, dessert and choice of beverage.

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $8 for ages 5 to 12. Children age and younger eat for free. Tickets can be purchased between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. Deadline to purchase tickets is Jan 30.

Groundhog Gala supports Midwest Museum of Natural History DAILY CHRONICLE The Midwest Museum of Natural History will host its ninth annual Groundhog Gala Fundraiser at 6 p.m.

Feb. 4 at the Chapel in the Pines in Sycamore. The gala will feature live music by Thunderbird Cello Ensemble, a full buffet meal, cash bar, muse-

um booths, raffle and silent auction.

All proceeds will go directly into sustaining and preserving the museum. Money raised at this year’s event will be used in part to help elevate and expand educational programming.

The silent auction will feature something for everyone, including autographed memorabilia from Chicago

teams such as the Cubs and Bears, a Le Coeur watch, designer cosmetics, Chicago museum passes, Northern Illinois University Football season tickets, whiskey tastings and tickets to Chicago theaters.

Tickets for the event cost $45 each, two for $80 or a table of eight for $275.

MAPLE PARK – Fabian Lopez said three words that summed up his day at the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament Saturday at Kaneland.

“Revenge is amazing, that’s all I really have to say,” Lopez said. “Going out there, I just felt like a new person out there. Going out there, beating a kid you already lost to, it’s really fun.”

DeKalb’s freshman 120-pounder avenged an earlier loss this season to Kaneland senior and defending Class 2A state runner-up Austin Kedzie with a 14-4 decision, one of two champs for the Barbs as they took second to Yorkville.

The championships for Lopez and Cobe Schmerbach at 160 weren’t enough to overcome the four championships won by the Foxes, as Yorkville won, 184.5-178, over the Barbs. DeKalb was 38 points ahead of third-place Ottawa. Sycamore was sixth with 117.4, and Kaneland was seventh with 110.

The Knights had only six wrestlers compete. All placed, and Nathan Orosco (106) and Riley Vanik (182) won titles.

Kedzie was runner-up at 120, and Colin Gussman was second at 220. The Spartans had no individual champions, but Trevor Boryla was second at 106, and Artimus Cunningham lost a 7-6 heartbreaker at 170.

After getting his revenge win against Kedzie, Lopez said he’s even more confident heading into the regionals, which are Feb. 4 for all classes.

“I was pretty nervous only because he already beat me once,” Lopez said. “I knew in my head I had to go out there and be better. The first match I was giving him a lot of respect, and I didn’t really start wrestling him until the second (period). I knew I had to do that in the first. I told myself in my head, ‘No one can keep up with me’, and that’s what happened.”

While Lopez was taking the top of the podium for the first time, so was Vanik. For all his postseason successes, he hadn’t won the conference tournament.

He corrected that with a 3-1 overtime win against Cody Baldridge of Morris, who entered the match at 170 with a 29-0 record.

“It feels really great because I’ve been going here all four years, haven’t been on top of the podium,” Vanik said.

“It feels great. It feels like I’m on top of the world right now – I can beat anybody.”

Each wrestler had an escape in regulation, then Vanik got a pin with 23 seconds left in the overtime.

“I know most wrestlers usually get a little sloppy in the overtime periods,”

Vanik said. “I’ve been keeping my gas tank up, and I was just ready to hit whatever I could find.”

Like Vanik, Schmerbach needed extra time to come away with his title.

He needed two overtimes to beat LaSalle-Peru’s Mitch Olsen, 5-4. He got an escape in his half of the second overtime, then rode out Olsen – although the Cavaliers senior was close to a reversal in the closing seconds that would have given him the win.

“I’m not a huge fan of overtime, but I guess I’m good at riding people out,” Schmerbach said. “My top work is pretty good, and the fact that guy was so quick on bottom really helped my momentum going into that last 30-second period. ... I had to tough it up and hang on the best I could (after the near-reversal), but luckily I came out on top.”

Orosco said he entered the tournament hoping to dominate. He won his two matches by a combined 30-5, including 12-2 over Boryla. He said his main

goals are at the regional and sectional, and this was just a “small stop” along the way.

“I feel pretty good going in,” Orosco said. “I’m pretty confident. I just have to focus on getting my weight down and staying positive.”

The Spartans didn’t have a champ, but assistant coach Alex Nelson – again acting as head coach in the absence of Brian Davis – said the team had a couple of bright spots.

At 195, No. 1 seed Brandon Lee of Yorkville was battling an ankle injury and faced Spartans junior Nick Salsberry, who came away with a 3-2 win and took fourth. Lee withdrew after the match. At 220, Joey Beaudoin took third by beating rival Ethan Engelson of DeKalb, 9-1. Beaudoin has struggled against Engelson in the past but picked up the win Saturday.

“Finally,” Nelson said emphatically.

“We kind of came up with a game plan, and Joey stuck to it. When he listens to

us and sticks to the game plan we set for him, good things happen for him.”

By the numbers: The Barbs also had a trio of runners-up – Tyler Scarbrough at 113, Jakob Norman at 138 and Niels Lewrentz at 195. While Scarbrough lost by a tech fall, Norman and Lewrentz lost by a combined three points.

Beyond the stats: At 170, Cunningham was leading throughout against Yorkville’s Nick Stemmet after building a 5-0 lead. But he led, 6-4, into the third and gave up an escape and takedown in the loss.

They said it: “We put together some good individual efforts, but we have to put together some better team efforts if we want to win the regional in two weeks,” DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt said.

“We have to have everybody place, everybody win matches. We have to have a whole team effort, because we’re not going to win the tournament with a handful of champs. We need a team effort if we want to win the tournament.”

Spartans’ defense too much for Thunder

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore girls basketball offense settled down after nine first-half turnovers and matched its tough defense Saturday against Woodstock North in a 45-31 win.

The Spartans (15-6) managed to open a 15-5 lead in the first quarter behind the strong shooting of junior guard Kate Majerus, who hit two 3-pointers and also was able to put in another two-point basket.

Freshman Kylie Feuerbach did much of her first-half scoring from the free-throw line, going 4 of 5 in the first

half.

She also made an impact on the boards, grabbing five first-half rebounds.

“Tonight we saw what we have seen from Kylie (Feuerbach) the last three or four weeks,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “Since hitting the game-winner against Genoa-Kingston, her confidence has been higher, and she has been much more comfortable.”

Thunder coach Trevor Mack also praised Feuerbach.

“I was surprised to find she was a freshman,” he said. “She is definitely going places.”

Mack also spoke highly of the Spartan defense, which held the Thunder (12-11) to 17 points while the Spartan starters were on the court.

“We missed some open shots in the first half that our guys normally make, but the defensive pressure was huge,” he said.

Freshman guard Abby Hartman scored 10 points in limited minutes for the Thunder.

Sycamore sophomore starter Maria Wright had a breakout game, pulling down five rebounds and scoring 11 points, going 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.

“I feel like I played my best of-

fensive game tonight,” Wright said. “[Wickness] told me that I needed to show what I could, and that is why I came out so aggressively.”

The Spartans will visit the Kaneland Knights on Tuesday in a game that will have major implications for the upcoming regional tournament.

Sycamore lost to Kaneland, 34-33, on Dec. 9.

“We are focusing on teamwork,” Wright said. “If we work as a team, we are talented and can compete with teams like Kaneland. We also play DeKalb at the Convocation Center next week, but we are focused on Kaneland.”

Glenn posts career highs in points, rebounds for Huskies in win

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team bounced back after its worst showing of the season.

Cassidy Glenn made sure of it.

The Huskies’ senior forward posted career highs in both points and rebounds, and NIU led wire-to-wire in an 89-76 win over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday afternoon at the NIU Convocation Center.

Glenn finished with 32 points on 11for-21 shooting and 10 for 13 from the foul line and had 13 rebounds in the victory after the Huskies struggled offensively and scored a season low in their 84-55 loss to Akron on Wednesday.

“At halftime I usually look [to see how many points I have], but during the game I try not to look because I’m better off not knowing,” Glenn said about her career high in points.

NIU sophomore Courtney Woods also had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds, and sophomore Mikayla Voigt added 16 points and made all four of her 3-pointers.

The offensive output was on par with how the Huskies (13-5 overall, 6-1 in Mid-American Conference West) have looked this season. Coming into the game, they averaged 88.2 points a game – third-best in the nation – while shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from deep. In the 89-point outing against the RedHawks, they shot 43.9 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from the three-point line.

However, the star of the show was Glenn, the redshirt senior from Providence Catholic in New Lenox.

A game after scoring just nine points against Akron – just the second time this season she’s been held to single digits – Glenn jumped out with 12 points in the first quarter and routinely got points around the basket. She made a layup despite being fouled five times on the afternoon and finished with 16 points in the paint.

“I thought she did a great job of getting to the rim and getting to the offensive glass, and those are also really big parts of her game,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said of Glenn. “She exploited those today, even when the long-range shot wasn’t falling.”

Glenn finished 0 for 4 from the three-point line despite coming into the game shooting 41.4 percent from deep.

Glenn’s previous career high in points was 26 – which she scored in back-to-back games against South Dakota and UMKC earlier this season – and 11 for rebounds, which she grabbed in a loss to Western Illinois this season.

She has flourished offensively in the two years under Carlsen’s high-tempo mentality. A year after averaging 9.3 points a game, she’s tied for the team lead in points with Woods – both of them have scored 314 points in 18 games for an average of 17.4 a contest.

“I haven’t really changed what I like to do,” Glenn said. “I’ve always liked to do this. I just didn’t get the chance to do it before, but now I do and I love it.”

They said it: “We can’t strictly rely on a 3-point shooting night,” Woods said about the better offensive performance for the Huskies. “Today, we definitely were still shooting 3s, but they were off penetration and extra passes. They were similar shots, but better looks.”

NIU senior big man Marin Maric finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, freshman guard Eugene German had 15, and sophomore forwards Jaylen Key and Levi Bradley each scored 11 in the loss.

The Bobcats are without the services of last year’s MAC Player of the Year, senior post Antonio Campbell, who is out for the season with a foot injury after averaging 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds a game this year. With Campbell out, Ohio was led by Simmons (9 for 15 from the floor), Jason Carter had 15 points, and Jordan Dartis and Mike Laster each added 14 in the win.

“A couple of their role players are now starters and getting more minutes – they’re the difference,” Montgomery said. “You take Carter, you take Laster – Carter comes in instead of Campbell and he has 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Unbelievable performance.”

The loss snaps a four-game winning

streak for the Huskies, who entered the day alone at the top of the MAC West standings. However, all four of the conference wins for NIU came against teams that were 1-4 heading into Saturday.

“We’re six games in,” Montgomery said. “We know Ohio is a good team with a good program – they’re there every year. You want to beat those teams, but I want to beat anybody we play.”

By the numbers: Ohio junior guard Mike Laster, who came into the game averaging 2.1 points a game, scored a career-high 14 points off the bench.

Beyond the stats: A year after going an impressive 18-1 at the NIU Convocation Center, the Huskies now are 8-3 at home this season.

They said it: “That was a nice little surprise for us,” Phillips said of Laster, who went 3 for 6 from 3-point range in 30 minutes off the bench. “I was smart enough to recognize a hot player when I saw it.”

Up next: The Huskies host Kent State at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and the Bobcats host Toledo on Tuesday.

DeKALB – Even without the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, the Ohio men’s basketball team did enough late to steal a road win at Northern Illinois.

The Bobcats broke open a tie game with five minutes remaining with a big run and came away with a 78-69 victory over the Huskies on Saturday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

“We just didn’t close the game, and it’s disappointing,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “Credit Ohio – they made tough shots when they had to make tough shots.”

The game was tied at 60 after NIU senior guard Dontel Highsmith split a pair of free throws with 5:32 left. The Bobcats answered by going on a 16-4 run – including a layup and jumper

NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP BRIEFS Falcons rout Packers for NFC title

ATLANTA – Matt Ryan and Julio Jones teamed up for a dominant playoff performance, and the Atlanta Falcons ignored all those ghosts from the past half-century.

Now, they’re heading to the Super Bowl.

Ryan threw for 392 yards and four touchdowns in another MVP-worthy showing, while Jones shook off a lingering toe injury to haul in nine catches for 180 yards and two scores, leading the Falcons to a 44-21 blowout of the storied Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday.

It will be only the second Super Bowl appearance in the Falcons’ 51-year history, the first coming 18 years ago with a team known as the “Dirty Birds.”

They never have won an NFL title.

The Falcons led, 24-0, at halftime against the Packers, perhaps the league’s hottest team, and essentially put the game away on their second offensive snap of the second half, a play that showed every one of Jones’ remarkable skills .

He blazed down the middle of the field, shook off LaDarius Gunter’s attempt to grab him on a cut toward the sideline, hauled in the pass from Ryan, broke Gunter’s diving attempt at a tackle, and defiantly knocked away Damarious Randall’s with a brutal stiffarm on the way to a 73-yard touchdown.

In the final game at the Georgia Dome, Ryan sparked more delirious chants of “MVP! MVP! MVP!” as he carved up an injury-plagued Packers secondary that simply had no way of stopping a team that averaged nearly 34 points a game during the regular season and romped to a 36-20 victory against Seattle’s Legion of Boom in the divisional round.

For good measure, Ryan also ran for a touchdown.

Patriots win AFC title vs. Steelers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The Tom Brady redemption tour is headed to the Super Bowl.

After beginning the 2016 season suspended for four games for his role in the “Deflategate” scandal, the New England quarterback relentlessly carried the Patriots to an unprecedented ninth appearance in the title game, and his seventh. Brady threw for a franchise playoff-best 384 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-17 rout of the helpless Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in New England’s seventh straight AFC title game.

The Patriots are early three-point favorites heading to face Atlanta in two weeks in Houston, seeking their fifth NFL title with Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick as coach. Belichick’s seventh appearance in a Super Bowl will be a record for a head coach.

While Brady was suspended, New England went 3-1 to open the schedule.

Since his return in Week 5, the only defeat came at home to Seattle, and Brady, 39, had one of the best seasons of a Hall of Fame-caliber career. He punctuated that in dreary weather similar to the 2014 conference title game that precipitated the deflated footballs investigation by flattening Pittsburgh’s secondary.

Chris Hogan was his main weapon. The previously unheralded receiver found open spaces everywhere on the field against a leaky secondary. Hogan caught nine balls for 180 yards and two scores.

Top wideout Julian Edelman added eight receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown as Brady tied Joe Montana’s playoff record with nine three-TD passing performances. Brady also had his 11th 300-yard postseason game, extending his NFL record, completing 32 of 42 throws.

Vancouver cut the lead in half with 14:57 left in the game when Troy Stecher’s power-play shot got past a screened Crawford. The Canucks tied it 46 seconds later when Bo Horvat got past Michal Kempny, who was in the box for Stecher’s goal, and pushed his own rebound past Crawford.

The Hawks re-took the lead when Panik’s shot rang off the back boards to Toews, who scored from the left circle to start their three-game homestand off a on a positive note. And hopefully for the Hawks, jumpstart Toews’ production.

“I guess the goals I’ve scored lately are just getting those bounces from being at the right spot at the right time,” Toews said. “It was nice to get that one on my stick. I just keep telling (Ryan Hartman) and (Panik) just to keep shooting.”

Crawford continue what he showed Sunday. Quenneville said he made big saves in the first, was solid in the second, and had “good responsive” saves in the third.

“I liked him around the net as well, but he looked like he was in control,” Quenneville said.

For the Blackhawks to get where they want, they’re going to need Corey Crawford to return to form. Sunday was only one game, but the Hawks goalie showed some encouraging signs.

And so did their captain.

Jonathan Toews had four points, including the winning goal with 1:18 left, Richard Panik, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa also scored, and Corey Crawford made 26 saves to lead the Hawks to a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks.

The Hawks led, 2-0, after two periods but allowed the Canucks to rally before Toews scored and then assisted on Hossa’s late empty-netter. The Hawks won their third straight since dropping two in a row, and improved to 18-5-4 at home, continuing their strong play at the United Center.

They also saw Crawford recover from his recent woes and win his 200th game, joining Tony Esposito (418), Glenn Hall (275) and Ed Belfour (201) to reach that milestone.

“It’s pretty special,” Crawford said.

my, Crawford hadn’t been special. He entered Sunday with a mediocre .903 save percentage and didn’t look as sharp as Scott Darling. Because of that, nobody would have blamed the Hawks if they had given Darling the start against the Canucks to follow up the 30 saves he made Friday in Boston.

But instead of riding the hot hand, the Hawks went back to Crawford and he justified the choice. There was indeed some thought of staying with Darling, but Quenneville had other ideas.

“That was definitely something we wanted to think. At the same time we want Crow playing as much as he can to get back to that great pace he had prior to him being away,” Quenneville said.

“But he hasn’t been bad. But certainly that’s what we’re looking for him to get back to. I like giving Darls some consideration. We’ll see, but certainly enhanced his positioning.”

Toews’ positioning is pretty well established, and he helped the Hawks salvage a win.

One group was given a statin, called lovastatin, and the other group was given a placebo.

Although there was a benefit seen with lovastatin among those who had an elevated CRP level, the benefit was not seen in those who had a normal CRP level.

One conclusion from the data is if you have normal cholesterol and no other risk factors, you should have your doctor check your levels of highly sensitive CRP. If the CRP persistently is elevated, then there is likely benefit to a cholesterol-lowering medication. One word of caution, however: If you have inflammation related to either infection or an autoimmune condition, the CRP will be elevated because of those conditions and therefore won’t be a reliable marker.

Doctors currently assess the need for statins by looking at risk calculators. These risk calculators assess an individual’s risk of having a heart attack over the next 10 years.

However, the science behind the risk calculator is poor, with a large Kaiser Permanente study of 307,000 people showing that it may significantly overestimate risk.

That finding emphasizes the need for the CRP test. If that test is normal, a statin would be unlikely to provide any benefit to you.

Dear Doctor: A news report recently said statins are underused. I’m 50 with normal cholesterol. Should I take one just in case?

Dear Reader: Statins, which are a type of cholesterol-lowering medication, consistently have shown benefit in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes in people who have had a previous heart attack or angina. This benefit is called secondary prevention. Statins also have shown benefit in people with risk factors for heart disease who have never had a heart attack; smokers; and people with diabetes, hypertension or a family history of heart disease. This is called primary prevention.

In people such as yourself, the potential benefit of statin use is not as clear-cut. So, first, let’s look at the Jupiter study, published in 2008. The 17,802 people in this study had normal cholesterol levels – that is, an LDL score (for low-density lipoprotein, the so-called “bad cholesterol”) of less than 130 – but they had an elevated level of highly sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker for both inflammation and a heightened risk of coronary artery disease.

Researchers divided participants into two groups, with one group taking a daily placebo and the other group taking a daily 20-milligram dose of rosuvastatin. The study was stopped in less than two years because of the significant benefit seen in the group that took the statin.

The study authors found a 44 percent decrease in deaths from heart attacks and strokes and a 20 percent decrease in the total death rate among the group who took the statin. Not only did participants who took rosuvastatin show a reduction in cholesterol, they also showed a decrease in their levels of highly sensitive CRP. That suggests statins reduce both cholesterol and the inflammation that may lead to vascular disease.

Well, Sara turned 13 this year and, like most teenagers, she’s distancing herself from her family and even more so from me.

My question is, should I continue to go and support her with her sporting events at school?

In today’s deal, South is in three no-trump. West leads the club ace: two, 10, nine. West continues with the club four (in case his partner has only queen-third of clubs). East wins with the queen, returns the club three, wins the fourth trick with his club eight and shifts to a low spade.

How should South try to benefit from the 4-4 club split?

South starts with eight top tricks: one spade, three hearts and four diamonds. The obvious chances for a ninth trick are the spade finesse working -- line A, let’s say -- or the missing hearts splitting 3-3 -- line B. Which would a mathematician recommend?

A finesse is theoretically a 50-50 shot, but a 3-3 break happens only approximately one time in three. So, the finesse is the better percentage.

This means that South, after discarding the spade four at trick three, should pitch the heart five at trick four and bank everything on the spade finesse, which, of course, works!
