Prop bets for Inauguration Day If there are two things Americans love, it’s politics and gambling.

So I thought I’d handicap some bets you can place on Donald John Trump’s inauguration as the 45th president today. The props are courtesy of the online betting website sportsbettingexperts.com.

Remember, this is for entertainment purposes only (and never bet more than you can afford to lose): • How many @realDonaldTrump tweets from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Inauguration Day? They’re setting the line on this one at 7½, which I consider too low. There will be a lot of people for Trump to be photographed with, I’m sure they’ve got some promotional stuff ready, and something’s bound to make President Trump angry.

I would say you should be able to place a side bet on what exclamations he’ll tweet that day: “Sad!” “Apologize!” and “Very unfair!” are some good possibilities.

• Time of @realDonaldTrump’s first tweet on Inauguration Day? You can bet either before or after noon Eastern Time, but there’s no way that Trump will wait that long to get started with this victory lap. Take before noon as a lock on this one.

• Time of Trump’s inaugural address?: The “over-under” on this one is 18 minutes, 30 seconds. I’m hoping for over just so Alec Baldwin and the writers at “Saturday Night Live” will have plenty to work with.

Even if Trump – who hosted the show in November 2015 – says it’s “really bad television!”

• Bible used during Trump’s oath of office?

DOCUMENTS: WOMAN KNEW FOR MONTHS SHE’D BEEN STOLEN AT BIRTH

An 18-year-old who was kidnapped as an infant discovered months ago that she had been raised by her abductor under an assumed name, court documents show.

An arrest warrant affidavit filed in the case Wednesday said the girl, living under the name Alexis Manigo in South Carolina, knew a year and a half ago that she’d been kidnapped as a baby from a Florida hospital and was listed as a missing person.

Let’s hope he doesn’t mention any of those.

The inauguration of a new president should be a happy occasion. It’s a sign our democracy is healthy, that change is going to come, and with this president more than any other I can recall, it’s really not clear exactly what he’s going to do beyond wall-building and tax-cutting.

But if you’re one of those Americans who still finds our new president too objectionable to accept, take heart: Bookmakers in the United Kingdom and Ireland are putting it at even money that Trump will resign or be impeached before his term ends.

Mobley was just eight hours old when a woman dressed as a nurse took her from her mother and disappeared. The abduction created a massive search, but Mobley was never found.

After the tips to the center, detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in Florida obtained a cheek swab from Mobley. The DNA tests confirmed her identity, and Gloria Williams, 51, was arrested on a kidnapping charge.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Community leaders and businesses were recognized for their services to the city Thursday during the 2017 Chamber of Commerce Annual Celebration Dinner at Faranda’s Banquet Center in DeKalb.

The chamber elects by popular vote nominees for ambassador of the year, business leader(s) of the year and business of the year.

Executive Director Matt Duffy said the chamber strives to connect businesses, people, ideas, information, skills, leaders and other resources as part of its organizational strategy.

“We look forward to being an organization you not only should be a part of but want to be a part of,” Duffy said.

The choice for business of the year had 14 finalists, but it was the DeKalb Public Library that earned the award.

“It’s such an honor, and I hope I can live up to it,” said library director Emily Faulkner, who has been in her position for less than a month and acknowledged the work of former director Dee Coover. “It just speaks to how the community supports this library, and I encourage people to come by.

We’re always growing, and everyone who wants to check it out is welcomed with open arms.”

The other business that were recognized included Adventure Works, Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell, DeKalb Fiber Optic and Syndeo Networks, DeKalb Hotel Group – Hampton Inn, DeKalb Sycamore Chevrolet Cadillac GMC, Ecowater Systems of DeKalb, Glidden Florist and Goods, Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois, KishHealth System Hospice, Kishwaukee College, OC Creative, Studio One Salon and Spa and Whiskey Acres Distilling Co. Ward 2 Alderman Bill Finucane; Lauren Woods, owner of Cracker Jax in downtown DeKalb; and Tim and Ann Lehan, owners of Lehan Drugs, were the inductees for the Business Leader Hall of Fame.

“I was surprised when somebody told me they nominated me, and I’m honored by the award,” Finucane said.

“I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to volunteer in community service here in town for the last 40 years, and while it’s not necessary, the award certainly is nice.”

“I’ve known the Lehans for a long time,” he said. “They’re a very special family.”

Business leader hall of famer Jerry Smith inducted the Lehans, whose drugstore has been a community staple for more than 60 years.

“When I think of Lehan, something

far in excess of drugstores comes to mind: loyalty and family,” Smith said.

“It must be said that this is a two-way street. Folks have been loyal to the Lehans because they have been loyal to them for so long.”

Woods lauded her employees, among others, for keeping her jewelry and gift shop alive.

“Cracker Jax has been my life’s art and work, and I stand here continuing to give it my all,” Woods said. “I’m grateful to the loyal customers who’ve placed their trust in us for over 30 years.”

The ambassador of the year, who promotes goodwill and communicates the chamber’s mission to new and current members, was Marcia Thompson of Graphic Matters in DeKalb. Thompson was in Hawaii during the dinner and could not accept the award.

NIU remembers Martin Luther King Jr. Students, staff gather for speech, reflection

DeKALB – The Rev. Leroy Mitchell said the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. is powerful for him because it reminds him of his late father, who taught him an important lesson about living with others.

“My dad and my mom were strange people, because they believed that their little bit could help somebody else, and that their little bit was better than nothing,” he said.

Mitchell, the founding pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb, spoke Thursday about King’s teachings and lessons from his own family during his keynote address for the Unity March at Northern Illinois University.

The march itself was supposed to lead to the MLK Commons for reflection but was canceled because of rain.

However, NIU students and staff still were able to remember King in the Altgeld Auditorium, where the NIU Black Choir sang and members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity read excerpts from King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

Mitchell recalled how his parents, both with third-grade educations, moved from the South to New York to look for work because they believed they could do better for themselves. “[My parents] had a son and daughter of their own, and then they went out and got 14 of us who were foster children,” Mitchell said. “In a two-bedroom, cold-water flat, they raised us. They took us and treated us as their own children, raised us as brothers and sisters.”

Mitchell and his wife had four children and have taken in 50 foster children.

He said his father also taught him a respect for King.

“My father would come home from work, watch the news, and then I had to sit down on the floor between his feet and read everything in the paper about Martin Luther King,” Mitchell said. “He said his eyes were bad, but we knew it probably was because he couldn’t read.”

Ernest Edward Fortner, 80 of DeKalb, Illinois passed away January 18, 2017 at the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center in DeKalb, Illinois.

Ernie was born to Lydia and Lonnie Fortner in Osceola, Arkansas on February 2, 1936. At an early age, he moved with his family to southeast Missouri. He married Jean Whitehead on October 11, 1954. He worked on the family farm before and after serving in the U. S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He then moved his family to Dallas, Texas and lived there for over 30 years working in the aircraft parts business. Upon retirement, Ernie and Jean moved back to Missouri. Ernie enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. In 2012, Ernie moved to Heritage Woods in DeKalb, and later to the DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Convicted Sycamore sex offender accused of rape remains in jail

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Sycamore man accused of tying up and repeatedly raping a 19-year-old acquaintance remained in jail Thursday without bond.

Judge Philip Montgomery appointed attorney Bob Nolan to represent Thomas A. Broughton, 24, of the 400 block of East State Street, Sycamore.

Broughton and his fian- Thomas A. cée, Ashley N. Zick, 21, Broughton have both been charged with sexual assault and unlawful restraint.

Prosecutors were expected to ask a judge Thursday to deny bond for Broughton. However, Broughton was unable to Ashley hire an attorney to repreN. Zick sent him. The hearing on Broughton’s bond was rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. Friday.

During a brief court appearance Thursday, Broughton said he worked as a box inspector at a company in Batavia, that the landlord at the Sycamore apartment complex where he lived has asked that he leave, and that Zick is pregnant with his child.

Zick remained in DeKalb County Jail on $75,000 bond Thursday evening.

She would have to post $7,500 to be released.

Nolan declined to comment on the

case after Thursday’s hearing because he had not had time to review the case file.

Sycamore police began investigating the incident after receiving a complaint that Broughton and Zick attacked the woman, who police described as an acquaintance of theirs, Sunday at the couple’s apartment.

Prosecutors said Broughton drove the 19-year-old woman to the couple’s Sycamore apartment and gave her alcohol. He and Zick then carried the woman to the bedroom and tied her hands and feet to the bed with straps.

Both raped the woman multiple times despite her saying “stop” and “no,” according to court documents.

Zick admitted to the crimes and told police the victim didn’t consent to the sexual activity, court records show.

In 2011, Broughton was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child for touching a 5-year-old girl.

In 2012, he pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and was sentenced to seven years in prison, according to court records. At that time, he was represented

by Rick Amato.

In September 2016, Broughton was charged with failing to register as a sex offender in Sycamore. He pleaded not guilty to that charge Nov. 28. Amato, who was elected DeKalb County state’s attorney in November, asked that a special prosecutor take over the case because he previously represented Broughton. The case remained pending as of Tuesday.

Man accused of DUI in fatal crash free on bond

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A firefighter and paramedic accused of drunken driving in connection with a four-vehicle crash that killed a DeKalb High School student was released from jail Thursday after posting $1,000 bail.

John A. Yanni III, 25, of the 100 block of South 18th Street in St. Charles, has been charged with reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated driving under the John A. influence. If convicted Yanni III of the most serious offense, aggravated driving under the influence causing death, he could face 3 to 14 years in prison, DeKalb County Judge Philip Montgomery said Thursday. He wouldn’t be eligible for probation if convicted of that crime.

Assistant State’s Attorney Timothy Mandel asked the judge to keep Yanni’s bond at $1 million. He noted that the crash killed Johnathon R. Ode, 18, of DeKalb and that a passenger in Ode’s vehicle, Evan M. Cortez, a 23-year-old Elgin man, remained in surgery at a Rockford hospital.

Yanni’s attorney, Liam Dixon, asked the judge to set a lower bond.

Yanni, he said, was a lifelong resident of St. Charles and was employed as a firefighter and paramedic at Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District.

Fundraiser started for DHS student’s funeral expenses DeKALB – An online crowdfunding effort has been started on GoFundMe to help pay the funeral costs for Johnathon Ode, a DeKalb High School senior who lost his life in a car crash Tuesday night.

The Johnathon R. Ode Memorial Fund was started Johnathon R. Wednesday and aims to Ode raise $10,000. After 24 hours, there were $1,425 in donations from 34 contributors.

of Ode’s stepmother, Katie, by Stephanie Faulkner, a longtime family friend.

“She asked if either of us could set that up since they have so much on their plate right now,” said Emily Faulkner, director of the DeKalb Public Library and Stephanie’s spouse.

Donations will go directly toward the costs of Ode’s funeral service and burial.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

Judge Montgomery set bond at $10,000, ordered Yanni not to drink alcohol and required that he be fitted with an alcohol-monitoring bracelet.

The judge said he was aware of the age of the victim and the effect the crime had the community. He said he was aware of “the emotional impact on not only the victim’s family, but also on the larger community.”

“These are not easy decisions for the court to come to,” Montgomery said.

In setting bond, the judge said he

had to balance the safety of the community with Yanni’s right to bond and presumption of innocence.

Several of Yanni’s supporters in the courtroom wept when it became clear that he would be released.

Outside the courtroom, Dixon said he thought the judge’s decision was fair given the circumstances of the case. “[Yanni’s] heart goes out to the families,” Dixon said. He added: “These are tragic cases all around.”

At the time of the crash, Yanni was going to his parents’ house, Dixon said.

He declined to comment on where Yanni was driving from.

The crash occurred about 7:15 p.m.

Police said Yanni was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup west on Route 38 when his vehicle crossed the highway’s center line.

Yanni’s truck first hit a 1995 Ford F-150 pickup driven by River J. Rich, 19, of Cortland, then collided head-on with Ode’s vehicle, a 2000 Ford Taurus, sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan said.

After the collision, a 2002 Hyundai Elantra driven by Scott McAdams, 36, of DeKalb rear-ended Yanni’s truck, police said.

Cortez remained at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford as of noon Thursday. A spokesman for the hospital said he was in fair condition.

Court documents said Cortez had suffered “great bodily harm or permanent disfigurement” in the crash.

Rich and McAdams were treated for minor injuries, police said.

Yanni has worked at the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District for the past five years, Fire Chief John Nixon said. The district serves Campton Hills, Wayne and the unincorporated areas of St. Charles and Campton Townships. Yanni is employed

by Paramedic Safety Services Inc. of Rosemont and has served the district through the company’s contract.

Tuesday was a scheduled day off for Yanni, Nixon said. He won’t be on active duty until his medical and legal issues are resolved, the chief said.

Yanni is next due in court March 10 for a preliminary hearing.

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is grappling with another in a series of defeats in its bid to regulate guns and tamp down gun violence, this time after a federal appeals court said its restrictions on publicly accessible gun ranges violated the Second Amendment.

Chicago officials have long blamed the proliferation of guns for persistently high homicide rates – there were more than 760 last year – and have struggled to craft laws acceptable to the courts ever since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2010 struck the city’s total ban on guns.

This latest ruling by the 7th U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago also is notable for who wrote the majority opinion that is being heralded by gun-rights advocates.

Illinois lawmakers look into taxing sugary beverages

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers may be including a proposal to tax sugary drinks in the state budget.

The proposed bill would tax any drink that has five grams of sugar or more, affecting drinks such as soft drinks and certain juices, The State Journal-Register reported.

Under the bill, distributors would be required to impose a penny-per-ounce tax on retailers. The tax would produce an estimated $560 million for the state.

Health care advocates believe the tax would be a responsible revenue generator. American Heart Association spokesman Mark Peysakhovich said the bill is a step in the right direction in providing meaningful improvements to public health within the state.

U of I trustees endorse plan to increase enrollment

CHICAGO – University of Illinois’ board of trustees on Thursday endorsed an ambitious plan from the system’s president to increase enrollment by nearly 15 percent at its three campuses over the next five years.

University of Illinois President Tim Killeen presented the plan to the Board of Trustees at their meeting in Chicago. The plan’s goal would have more than 93,600 students enrolled at the school’s campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield over the next five years.

CHICAGO – Four Chicago police officers who were at the scene of the 2014 fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald have been suspended for failing to ensure the dashboard cameras in their squad cars were operating properly.

Chicago’s Office of Inspector General recommended the firing of 11 police officers in connection with the shooting. And it proposed suspensions for four officers at the scene.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a police spokesman confirmed Superintendent Eddie Johnson has handed down one-week suspensions to the four officers.

The toughest regulations don’t apply to the law enforcement and security-company gun ranges within the city limits. The 7th Circuit noted not a single gun range for use by the public has managed to open in Chicago.

A lead lawyer for the gun advocates in the case, Alan Gura, said in an emailed statement Thursday that Chicago officials asserted “wild claims” about the risks of gun ranges and that city lawmakers focus too much on blaming guns.

“City resources would be better spent improving policing and addressing the root causes of crime,” Gura said.

50K people expected at Women’s March on Chicago

CHICAGO – Organizers said about 50,000 people are expected to attend a women’s march in Chicago the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration.

The event is planned for the same day as a larger Women’s March on Washington.

About 200 other “sister marches” are scheduled around the country.

Organizers said the Chicago event is intended to send a message to the Trump administration “that women will defend and further their rights.”

Jessica Scheller is a co-chairwoman for the Chicago march. She said grass-roots organizers will rally attendees and highlight ways they may get involved in various issues.

Doctors mull removing tube for George H.W. Bush The militants targeted in the HOUSTON – Doctors treating former President George H.W. Bush for pneumonia considered Thursday whether to take out a breathing tube while his wife, Barbara, said she was feeling much better after undergoing treatment for bronchitis.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said physicians for the 92-yearold Bush were evaluating him for removal of the tube, which was inserted Wednesday in a procedure to clear his airway.

The 41st president has been in the intensive care unit at Houston Methodist Hospital since Wednesday, relying on a ventilator to breathe. Removing the tube – a procedure known as extubation – would allow Bush to breathe on his own. He was struggling to breathe when he was admitted to the hospital Saturday.

Bush “had a good night’s rest” and remained in stable condition, McGrath said. “We are hopeful he will be discharged from the ICU in a few days.”

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – With fireworks heralding his big moment, Donald Trump swept into Washington, D.C., on Thursday on the eve of his presidential inauguration and pledged to unify a nation sorely divided and clamoring for change. The capital braced for an onslaught of crowds and demonstrators – with all the attendant hoopla and hand-wringing.

“It’s a movement like we’ve never seen anywhere in the world,” the president-elect declared at a celebratory evening concert Thursday night with the majestic Lincoln Memorial for a backdrop. To the unwavering supporters who were with him from the start, he promised: “You’re not forgotten any more. You’re not forgotten any more.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he called out, and then fireworks exploded into the evening sky.

Trump began taking on more trappings of the presidency during the day, giving a salute to the Air Force officer who welcomed him as he stepped off a military jet with wife Melania at Joint Base Andrews just outside Washington.

Later, he placed a ceremonial wreath at Arlington National Cemetery.

At a luncheon in a ballroom at his own hotel, he gave a shout-out to Republican congressional leaders, declaring: “I just want to let the world know we’re doing very well together.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan, he said, will finally have someone to sign legislation into law. Then Trump veered into the territory of the unknowable to boast his Cabinet selections had “by far the highest IQ of any Cabinet ever.”

quickly emptying out. President Barack Obama had his final weekly lunch with Vice President Joe Biden and got in a few final official acts, cutting the sentences of 330 inmates and placing a call to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Vice President-elect Mike Pence, in a tweet, called Inauguration Eve “a momentous day before a historic day,” as security barricades and blockades went up around Washington in preparation for Friday’s swearing-in at the Capitol.

“We are all ready to go to work,” Pence said.

“In fact, we can’t wait to get to work for the American people to make it great again.”

Outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said he’d be putting on his “favorite DHS jacket” and taking to the streets to inspect security preparations for the inaugural festivities.

He told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that areas where inaugural crowds will congregate will be “extra fortified this year with dump trucks, heavily armored vehicles to prevent anybody who’s not authorized from being in the area from driving something in there.” He said there was “no specific credible threat” related to the inauguration.

Trump’s public schedule for the inaugural celebration began at Arlington, where he and Pence stood at attention as a bugler played taps at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Trump’s wife, children and grandchildren silently looked on.

From there, Trump shuttled to a celebratory welcome concert on the steps of Lincoln Memorial that ended with fireworks filling the sky.

The concert, open to the public, offered headliners including country star Toby Keith, soul’s Sam Moore and rockers 3 Doors Down.

The purpose of townships Taxes are necessary for the common good, right?

So there is a special responsibility for those who take our taxes to ensure the money is spent efficiently, used frugally and delivers value.

Examine the finances of a township government and you will have a tough time believing anyone involved cares anything about those standards.

Townships exist in the netherworld between the layers of municipal and county government. In rural areas they often care for roads, but in municipal areas they often care for their own.

Belleville Township, East St. Louis Township and Granite City Township have no roads. They exist exactly within the boundaries of their respective cities.

So what is their purpose? They deliver an amount set by state law at up to $245 a month per needy person who is not a child, not elderly and not on another government program. That’s a pretty limited mission and a haphazard way to help the poor.

Belleville Township, which took state action and nearly required an act of God to start its long, continuing demise, was delivering 19 cents in aid for every $1 taxed. East St. Louis Township, which convicted former supervisor Oliver W. Hamilton was treating like his personal ATM, delivered 18 cents in aid for every $1 taxed.

Granite City Township and East St. Louis Township each collected just about $1.6 million from taxpayers in 2015. But even with all the corruption and thievery taking place in East St. Louis Township, it still managed to hand the poor more aid than did Granite City Township. Granite City Township handed out $189,500, which would be less than 12 cents of every $1 taxed.

Like the other townships, Granite City Township exists for its employees, not for the residents. Forty-seven people drew paychecks from the township totaling $865,839 in 2015. Their retirement costs came close to the amount of assistance delivered. They had about $700,000 in cash assets – excess money collected from taxpayers.

Unlike the other townships, Granite City does offer the town hall as a senior center where you can play pinochle Tuesday afternoons. It also houses an assessor’s office that took one-quarter of the $1.6 million.

But like every township, the legitimate government functions can be absorbed by a municipality or the county. The charity functions can be absorbed by a church or a real charity.

If there was once a legitimate public need that these three townships fulfilled, it is long past.

Illinois can afford to shed some of its nation-leading 6,963 layers of local government, and you can’t afford for them all to continue.

Trump picks know NATO is vital Congressional testimony by Donald Trump’s national security nominees last week suggested that the incoming administration would not seek to dismantle the alliances that have undergirded the West – and U.S. global leadership – since 1945. “If we did not have NATO today, we would need to create it,” Defense secretary nominee James Mattis said. The U.S. treaty commitment to defend its European allies, Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson said, is “inviolable.”

It is still not clear, however, that Trump agrees. In an interview published by the Times of London, he recalled his claim last year that NATO was “obsolete” because it did not fight terrorism (although it does) and because many of its members did not meet its defense spending guidelines.

He then went on to say that “it doesn’t matter” to him whether the European Union exists, predicted more countries will leave it and placed German Chancellor Angela Merkel on par with Russian President Vladimir Putin in meriting his trust. Unsurprising-

ly, Moscow hailed Trump’s words, while senior European leaders reacted with alarm.

Merkel played down the statements, and maybe she’s right: Perhaps Trump’s words – he also said “NATO is very important to me” – were haphazard and should not be taken seriously. Yet if the president-elect’s intention was to undermine the transatlantic alliance, encourage the disintegration of the European Union and tear down Merkel as she begins a re-election campaign – an agenda identical to Putin’s – he could hardly have been more effective.

Russia has already launched a disinformation campaign to discredit Merkel, using fake-news websites and internet bots in the same way it targeted Hillary Clinton. Germans might be forgiven for thinking that Trump’s intervention was designed to enhance that assault. He accused Merkel of making “a catastrophic mistake” by accepting desperate refugees from the Middle East and said Germany was using European integration as a vehicle for its own interests.

Trump’s critiques of the European Union are shared by many Europeans. But he is wrong to suggest that the U.S. has no interest in the community’s survival. In addition to making war between its great powers unthinkable, European integration has helped consolidate democracy and the protection of human rights in countries across the continent, from Portugal to Romania. If it broke up, more nations would drift into the corrupt, autocratic orbit of Russia.

As for NATO, Mattis was right to tell the Senate Armed Services Committee that it “is the most successful military alliance in modern world history.”

Merkel said she will wait to see what Trump does when he is in office. It’s probably naive to hope that he will modulate his rhetoric. But Americans who value their country’s place in the world, including Trump’s Cabinet members, should do their best to ensure that he does not act on it.

Once destroyed, the West’s alliances will not be easily rebuilt.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

He filled his daughter’s Kindle with books The first time I met Barack Obama was in early 2006, when he was still a U.S. senator.

He had come to Cincinnati to help out my husband, Sherrod Brown, in Sherrod’s campaign to join him in the Senate. I sat next to Obama during breakfast, before he took the stage.

Almost immediately, our conversation turned to the isolation and rigor necessary for a writer’s life.

He was in the final edits for his second book, “The Audacity of Hope,” which would become a best-seller later that year and set the stage for his presidential race. What I remember most during our conversation was the look on his face, as well as the language he used, as he described his writing habits. A writer can usually tell when someone laying claim to the profession is faking it. Obama was the real deal.

He talked about the quiet, anonymous space of air travel, when he could write without interruption. We commiserated about the challenge of finding that perfect word – and many times, there is that one perfect word – which too often eludes us writers until 3 in the morning, when we sit up like a sprung jackknife and claw in the dark for paper and a pen.

He asked about my writing habits and leaned in with the face of a person listening hard. I have little rec-

The New York Times’ chief book critic, Michiko Kakutani, recently interviewed Obama about how reading and writing fundamentally shaped him as a man and as a president.

An excerpt: “During his eight years in the White House – in a noisy era of information overload, extreme partisanship and knee-jerk reactions – books were a sustaining source of ideas and inspiration, and gave him a renewed appreciation for the complexities and ambiguities of the human condition. “ ‘At a time when events move so quickly and so much information is transmitted,’ he said, reading gave him the ability to occasionally ‘slow down and get perspective’ and ‘the ability to get in somebody else’s shoes.’ These two things, he added, ‘have been invaluable to me. Whether they’ve made me a better president I

can’t say. But what I can say is that they have allowed me to sort of maintain my balance during the course of eight years, because this is a place that comes at you hard and fast and doesn’t let up.’ ” Obama offered titles of books that have moved or influenced him in some way and told Kakutani that he recently gave his elder daughter, Malia, a Kindle filled with books he wanted to share with her. Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one. “The Golden Notebook,” by Doris Lessing, is another. Maxine Hong Kingston’s “The Woman Warrior,” too.

I was fine, just fine, until I read about that Kindle.

For weeks now, I’ve been taking in the final round of coverage of this president and his family with a measured response. After every story, every video clip, I take a deep breath and move on.

This is part of what it means to live in America, I’ve reminded myself countless times since the election.

Every presidency arrives with an expiration date. Eight years max and he – so far, always he – is out of there.

I have not always agreed with Obama, which is also part of what it means to live in America. We elect humans, not saints. There are bound to be disappointments.

Never, however, have I doubted Obama’s commitment to our country.

Not once have I looked at him and worried about what the rest of the world must think of us for having elected him. I have trusted him to understand that his every move, his every word, reflects on all of us. If my working-class mother had lived to see Obama, she would have said he knows how to represent.

Our president gave his teenage daughter a Kindle, and he filled it with books. That small yet enormous detail brings it home. There is no replacing this president, and what comes next is sinking in. The distance between what was and what will be seems so vast.

“Oh, well,” Brave Orchid said in “The Woman Warrior.” “We’re all under the same sky and walk the same earth; we’re alive together during the same moment.”

To the Editor: As we begin the first 100 days of the Trump administration, I am feeling more hopeful.

Democrats are sounding much more reasonable as they are relieved from defending everything anybody’s ever done to try to solve problems in this country.

Republicans are sounding silly and a bit dangerous as they have had to come out of their insulated echo chambers and begin talking in public about their credentials for leading federal departments and the proposals they are putting forth to solve our problems in health care deliv-

ery, poverty, joblessness and our police forces, not to mention the miracles we are going to see in reducing crime in the streets and the executive suite.

I can’t wait till the 2018 elections.

Staff number, quality key to nursing home success Note to readers: This letter is being reprinted because it ran with the incorrect name in Thursday’s edition.

To the Editor: I am writing this in response to the letters to the editor by William Klein that appeared in the Daily Chronicle on

Tuesday, Jan. 17.

I have spent 30 years in long-term and rehab care as a director of nursing and an administrator.

Mr. Klein is exactly on target. The largest problem always was and still is staffing.

Yes, it is wonderful to have a beautiful facility and all the perks, but when it comes down to it, the care provided in a clean, comfortable setting is what it is all about.

The quality and number of staff makes all the difference in determining whether a facility is what you would want for your relative or friend.

The ratio of staff to residents is critical.

Being a CNA or a nurse in this setting can often be overwhelming. I know how much is required of a CNA or a nurse in one eight-hour shift, and I know the only reason they go to work day after day is because they care.

We all hear stories of abuse and neglect in long-term facilities, and my experience tells me that most often this occurs because of lack of staff or lack of training for staff.

I can understand a facility needing improvements and updates, but let us do what is reasonable and worry more about the staff.

DAILY CHRONICLE Little Lambs Preschool of Immanuel Lutheran Church in DeKalb is celebrating its 20th anniversary of serving families.

The preschool opened in the fall of 1996 with six students enrolled. Little Lambs now serves 52 3- to 5-year-olds each week – more than 600 students over the past 20 years.

Many changes have taken place in the past 20 years, but commitment to the core goal has not changed: The staff works in partnership with families to form a foundation for the child’s development based on the concept that a play-based quality education in a Christian setting is important for all children.

The anniversary celebration will take place in conjunction with a weeklong observation of National Lutheran Schools Week, Jan. 23 to 29. The theme for the week is “Upon This Rock,” based on the Bible verse from Isaiah 26:4, “Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”

Special activities will be incorporated throughout the week, including

collecting items for TAILS Humane Society, compiling a Little Lambs Prayer Book, reading “Stone Soup” and inviting a special guest to school.

On Jan. 29, members of Immanuel Lutheran Church will celebrate Little Lambs’ 20th anniversary during worship and with a reception following the service. The community is invited, especially former students.

Current students will sing during worship and there will be a video presentation and a proclamation by DeKalb Mayor John Rey. Former students will be invited to sing the final song together.

A Little Lamb family photo will be taken of all current and past students in attendance and a special door offering will be taken, with the proceeds going to benefit Little Lambs.

Each current Little Lamb will receive a gift from the congregation of a certificate redeemable for a Lutheran Church Extension Fund Young Investors savings account.

After putting up eye-popping numbers on offense all season long, the Huskies are coming off their first stinker. They lost by nearly 30 and put up just 55 points against Akron on Wednesday – 22 less than the previous low and six points less than what they scored in the first half against Illinois State. They also shot a season-worst 33 percent, bricking 3-pointers all day.

The Huskies got open looks; they just missed them.

“That’s so uncharacteristic of us offensively,” said NIU coach Lisa Carlsen, whose team now averages 88.2 points a game. “It doesn’t build up in 16 games, it’s not going to go away in one. We’re going to get back to who we are.”

It’s worth noting, however, how much Carlsen has changed the offensive expectations for this program in just her second season. Watching the game against Akron, the Huskies’ offense felt dreadful, but all of that is by comparison, because during the 2014-15 campaign – the year before Carlsen was hired – NIU averaged 54.8 points a game.

Most noticeable, after scoring just 10 points in the third quarter at Bowling Green, they laid the hammer down and erupted for 33 points in the 89-76 road victory.

This next stretch of games, which include four of five at home, are important for the Huskies. They’ll show if the Akron loss was them coming back down to Earth for a middle-of-the-conference finish or if NIU is in the middle of a rags-to-riches story after not having a winning season in a decade.

Spartans’ defense shuts down Pirates Feuerbach steal in 3rd begins 18-3 run that puts game out of reach

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The defense for the Sycamore girls basketball team clamped down on Ottawa in the second half on Thursday, handing the Pirates their first Northern Illinois Big 12 loss in a 45-33 victory for the Spartans in the crossover match.

“That’s a very, very good team we just beat,” Sycamore coach Adam Wickness said. “We knew going into the game they would be very toughnosed on defense and had a couple guards who could knock down shots in space. I thought our girls played lights-out defense.”

The Pirates shot 3 for 19 in the second half and scored 12 points, including five in the third quarter.

The eighth and final lead change of the game – which was close throughout the first half – came when Kylie Feuerbach got a layup off her own steal with 5:38 left in the third quarter, putting Sycamore (14-6 overall, 6-3 conference) up, 24-23.

The Pirates focused on stopping Feuerbach and Kate Majerus – who combined for 20 of the Spartans’ 22 first-half points – but the Spartans responded in the third. After Feuerbach’s bucket began the scoring for Sycamore in the third, Taryn Mathey and Juliet Mathey each scored four points in the quarter on combined 4-of-6 shooting.

“They came out in a triangle-and-two in the second quarter, took us out of our rhythm a little bit,” Wickness said. “I thought the girls that were not being taken away did a really good job of making those di-

agonal passes and those inside-out passes that led to shots, and the girls knocked them down.”

“I kept telling Taryn and Juliet, just keep shooting,” said Majerus, who scored 11 in the game. “They really stepped it up for us. It definitely led to this win today.”

Feuerbach scored a game-high 19, plus grabbed 18 and had six blocks as the Spartans finished with 10 blocks total.

“We talked about at halftime making sure we came out with the intensity that every basket they were going to score would cost us the game,” Wickness said. “I think the girls really rose to that challenge. Five points in the third quarter, I don’t care who

you’re playing that’s really good defense.”

By the numbers: Angelique Cowan led the Pirates with eight points. Julia Long had six points, nine rebound and three blocks. The Spartans only committed eight turnovers in the game, and Pirates only scored off of the last two. Twelve Pirate turnovers led to 14 Sycamore points. Juliet Mathey scored seven for Sycamore.

Beyond the stats: With the Pirates leading, 19-16, and the Spartans having only scored two points in the first 6:21 of the second quarter, Feuerbach went on a 6-0 run with a free throw, 3-pointer and a layup to help her team regain the lead going into halftime.

They said it: “We made it more difficult for ourselves in the first half by not communicating,” Majerus said on what changed for the Spartans after halftime. “They were always setting screens and moving, which was awesome to see, but it was difficult to defend. Once we started communicating, it helped us out for sure.”

Up next: The Spartans host Woodstock North at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Pirates host Kaneland at 2:30 p.m.

Nay, Galauner unable to find scoring rhythm as Cogs fall to Indians

sports@daily-chronicle.com GENOA – It was a tale of two halves for the Cogs in a 56-47 loss to Winnebago in a Big Northern Conference match on Thursday.

The Cogs (14-5, 2-2) traded buckets with the Indians (14-8 , 5-1) for the first half, but the Cogs (14-5, 2-2) fell behind for good after Winnebago’s defense held Genoa-Kingston to eight points in the third quarter.

Both teams started out slow, but a determined Winnebago team outhustled the Cogs to rebounds and held their best scorers in check.

“They wanted it more than we did,” G-K coach Kyle Henkel said. “They outworked us. Bottom line.”

Winnebago coach Judy Krause applauded her team’s defensive effort on trying to slow down Jesi Nay and Julie Galauner.

“I saw a lot of frustration on their

part, so we played into it a little more. ... Defensively we were able to shut down their two big scorers,” she said.

Nay paced the Cogs with 13 points.

Julie Galauner, the other half of the Cogs’ dynamic duo, managed only seven points.

Alyssa Thompson led the Indians with 13 points, including 5 of 6 free throws in the final minutes to seal the victory for Winnebago.

Henkel lamented his team’s lack of

intensity.

The Cogs went down by as much as 12 points midway through the fourth quarter. They managed a brief comeback to shave the deficit to four with 1:16 left.

The Indians’ defense then returned to form and closed the door on any comeback, aided by clutch free-throw shooting.

Winnebago went 9 for 10 from the free-throw line in the final minutes.

The Barbs finished with 139 points, while Sterling had 114 and Morris 55.

Senior Dylan Rasmussen was one of two Barbs with a pair of first-place finishes, winning the 50yard freestyle (24.04) and the 100 butterfly (57.00).

Nathan Braun won the 200 free (1:54.15) and the 500 free (5:15.40).

Paul Ruetten won the 200 individual medley (2:12.91), David Ruetten won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.57) and Gavin Anderson won the 100 backstroke (1:00.70).

“We had the hardest week of our season thus far, and the boys swam really well.” coach Melanie Chambers said. “We won many races at the very end of the race, making for a very exciting meet.

The boys took first and second place in three different events, which was huge. Being that it was a tri-meet, we were only able to enter two boys in each event as opposed to three, so we mixed up the lineup a bit. We were very proud of how the boys swam this

evening, and they brought lots of enthusiasm to the meet.”

LAS VEGAS – First the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights. Soon, maybe, the Las Vegas Raiders.

Once looked on with disdain by major sports leagues, this gambling city is now just 24 votes away from cashing in on one of the biggest sports jackpots ever.

The Raiders made it official Thursday by filing for relocation from Oakland to Las Vegas, the culmination of a whirlwind romance to bring an NFL team to a city that the league had previously gone out of its way to shun because of sports betting fears.

League owners are expected to vote on the move in March, and it’s hard to find anyone betting it won’t happen.

“I don’t know how you can put a price on this,” said Steve Sisolak, a county commissioner who has been involved in the efforts to land the team.

“There are only 32 cities that can say they have an NFL team, and we will be one of them.”

Actually, there is a price on it. Tourists will pay increased room taxes to fund $750 million of the cost of a new $1.9 billion stadium as part of a deal rammed through a special session of the Nevada Legislature by powerful casino owner Sheldon Adelson’s family.

The stadium will be just off the glittering Las Vegas Strip, where the Golden Knights will begin play this fall in a new arena of their own. The expansion hockey team is the first major sports franchise to call the city home.

“Without the Golden Knights, I don’t know if the Raiders would have thought this was a viable market,” Sisolak said. “They kind of broke the glass ceiling.”

If approved, the move would be the third announced by an NFL team in

a year as the league undergoes a geographic shift unlike any in recent history. The Rams returned to Los Angeles from St. Louis this season, while the San Diego Chargers will begin play in L.A. next season. “(Raiders owner) Mark Davis is a man of his word, and the filing of the Raiders’ application for relocation of the franchise with the NFL is a significant step in bringing the team to Las Vegas,” Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said.

The NFL has long been opposed to any association with Las Vegas, to the point where just a few years ago it refused to allow the city to advertise on the Super Bowl telecast because it offered legal betting. But the league’s opposition has softened, and so has the stance of Commissioner Roger Goodell.

“I think there are some real strengths to the Las Vegas market,” Goodell said at an owners’ meeting last month. “It’s clear the Las Vegas market has become a more diversified market, more broadly involved with entertainment, hosting big events. And there’s a growth to the market.”

Las Vegas, which has about 2.5 million people in the metropolitan area, would be a smaller market than the Bay Area. But fans from other cities are expected to fill a third of the proposed 65,000-seat stadium, and the team also will be able to draw on Raiders fans from throughout California.

Influential owners such Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots have spoken favorably about the prospects of a move, and Davis has been lobbying behind the scenes to secure the votes of three-fourths of the 32 owners needed for relocation.

The vote is expected to take place during league meetings March 26 to 29 in Phoenix.

Davis did not comment Thursday on the relocation application, but has made no secret of his commitment to Las Vegas. At a stadium meeting last year in the city, he brought along a program from a 1964 American Football League exhibition game in the city where the Raiders beat the Houston Oilers.

Davis has said the team will continue to play in Oakland until the Las Vegas stadium is finished, likely by the 2020 season. There are two sites currently being looked at for the stadium, both adjacent to the Strip.

One possible hang-up could be Adelson’s participation in the project. He’s the one who initiated conversations with Davis last January, and was instrumental in getting a tax increase passed by the state legislature in October.

Adelson’s family has offered $650 million toward the stadium, but has reached no deal with the Raiders yet.

Team representatives said they have secured the funding to replace Adelson’s investment in case a deal isn’t reached. NFL rules prohibit casino op-

erators from having ownership roles in teams.

Andy Abboud, the executive working on the project for Adelson, called the filing “one of those moments that makes it real” and vowed that necessary negotiations will be completed.

“The people of Las Vegas should be excited that the NFL is coming to town,” Abboud told the AP. “Business deals take time to work out, but everything will work out in the end.”

The Raiders have two one-year options to play at the Oakland Coliseum in 2017 and 2018 and are already taking season ticket renewals for next season.

But the Raiders have largely ignored a proposal by former player Ronnie Lott to build a new stadium in Oakland to keep the team permanently.

“We are in this game, and we are playing to win,” Lott’s group said in a statement, vowing to push ahead.

Under Davis’ father, Hall of Fame owner Al Davis, the Raiders moved from Oakland to Los Angeles in 1982 then returned to the East Bay in 1995.

Butler voted to start All-Star Game

jcowley@suntimes.com For a guy that said he didn’t care about making the All-Star Game just a few days ago, well, Jimmy Butler can go ahead and cancel those February plans to Barbados.

Butler was named to his third straight All-Star game Thursday, but this was the first time he was named to the NBA’s mid-season showcase weekend as a starter.

Still, he wasn’t about to back down from his stance on how meaningful the game is to him.

“Nope, it hasn’t changed at all,” Butler said on a teleconference from Atlanta after the Eastern Team starters were announced. “Obviously it’s a huge accomplishment and it’s an honor to be named a starter, but it’s All-Star Weekend, there’s going to be a lot of good players there. I guess it’s just another name thrown in with some decent basketball players.”

Butler’s been more than “just another name’’ so far for the Bulls this season.

In 41 games this season, the 27-yearold is averaging a career-high 24.8 points a game, the fourth best in the East. He also has a career-high 6.8 rebounds, a career-high-tying 4.8 assists

and 1.76 steals, all while playing 36.8 minutes a game and on most nights guarding the best player on the opposing team.

Not bad for a guy selected with the last pick of the first round in the 2011 NBA Draft.

“Everybody has their own story,” Butler said. “Everyone has a different path to get where they’re trying to get to, and I’m no different than anybody else. I think I just worked a little hard, put in the time, and became a decent player. I will tell you right now that when I was starting my NBA career in 2011, I wasn’t very good, I’ll tell you that. Now to be named a starter shows the work I’ve put in.”

This was the first season the voting process for the starters involved the fans, as well as the media and the players. It’s always been a fan-vote process, but this season the fan vote only carried 50 percent of the weight, while the media and players each grabbed the other 25 percent.

Butler joined forwards LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the frontcourt, so obviously he’s in good company. Deservingly so, considering Butler joins MVP candidate Russell Westbrook as the only players in the NBA who are presently averaging at least 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 as-

As far as the voting, Butler did hand in a ballot, but would only admit to voting for Dwyane Wade as a reserve. The rest would remain a secret.

What wasn’t a secret was how much fun Butler planned to have in New Orleans that weekend. He attended the All-Star Game last season after being named a reserve, and wasn’t even playing in it because of an injury.

“It’s fun, man,” Butler said. “You

get to know the other really good players in the league and you get to learn a little bit about them, and then the experiences that you get to be a part of whether it’s the [Michael] Jordan party or you’re taking your guys everywhere.

“I think that’s the most fun part for me is that my trainers, my brothers, everyone that is behind the scenes that’s helped me with everything gets to experience it too.”

Crawford adjusting to league’s latest way of increasing offense

mlazerus@suntimes.com BOSTON – Corey Crawford wore the new slimmed-down goalie pants that will become mandatory Feb. 4 – part of the NHL’s latest effort to increase scoring – during the Blackhawks’ game against Washington last Friday.

He gave up five goals and was replaced by Scott Darling in the third period.

“Tough one to try them out in,” Crawford said with a laugh. “I wore them in practice, too. They’re definitely thinner. It’s not going to make a huge difference, but there are some little tweaks to be done with the equipment.”

The goalies are an easy target when trying to figure out how to goose scoring in a league that has seen save percentage increase steadily from .873 percent in 1983-84 to .915 percent this season, matching last season’s all-time high.

Streamlining goalie pads is the sim-

plest solution.

But Crawford had a different, and compelling, idea on how to increase both scoring, and the quality of play.

“I’ve always thought the real issue isn’t goalie equipment,” he said. “The issue is ice. If you can make ice like the way it is in Colorado, the way it is in Washington, Edmonton – you make the conditions like that for every game in every rink, guys are going to score. …

It’s a massive difference between battling with [a bouncing] puck and making sure it’s going to be on the ice, and just playing.”

Indeed, if you watch a game in Edmonton vs. a game in, say, Florida, passes are crisper, play is cleaner, and the game is faster.

The United Center, as have many high-traffic, multipurpose arenas, has been long derided for its ice quality.

But Crawford said it’s significantly better now, and is among the “top third” in the league.

“I don’t care how big your equipment is, if you can’t react to it, you’re

not going to stop it, anyway,” Crawford said. “How fast was that game in Colorado (a 6-4 Hawks win)? How fun was that game to watch? That was a fast game. You watch a game where the ice is just horse[bleep] – it makes a huge difference. It’s way more fun to watch.”

Crawford has done his own part to increase scoring lately, with a middling .903 save percentage since missing three weeks after an appendectomy.

Before the surgery, Crawford’s save percentage was a sparkling .927 in 20 games. Crawford doesn’t believe there are any lingering effects from the appendectomy, but admitted he’s not seeing the puck as well as he was earlier in the season.

“Every guy goes through it,” he said.

“There’s not one goalie in the league, in history, that’s ever gone through a full season without some sort of down [stretch] during the year. It’s almost impossible to do that. ... It’s funny how the game works. Sometimes you feel great, you’re playing great, and you

lose 2-1, or 1-0. And then there are other games where maybe you don’t feel as well or you’re not seeing the puck as well, and you win 6-5 to 5-4.”

Scott Darling will get the start Friday at Boston, but that’s largely because Joel Quenneville wants to get everybody in while the players’ fathers are on the road trip this week.

Quenneville’s not worried about Crawford. He also pointed out that – slimmed-down goalie pants or not – there have been a lot of eye-popping scores around the league over the past few days, with the Penguins winning 8-7, the Stars winning 7-6, the Hawks and Senators winning 6-4, and the Red Wings winning 6-5.

“Everybody has stretches where you’re on top of your game to a different level and you’re seeing the puck, and then you have stretches where they find a way in,” Quenneville said.

“We all feel very comfortable that [Crawford] will be able to get back to being confident and doing this thing.”

LAKE FOREST – The Bears have hired three new assistant coaches.

Jeremiah Washburn replaces Dave Magazu as offensive line coach. Washburn last served as assistant offensive line coach under Adam Gase with the Miami Dolphins.

Curtis Modkins was hired as running backs coach. Modkins has coached for 22 years, including nine with the San Francisco 49ers.

Before that, he spent three seasons as the Detroit Lions’ running backs coach.

Modkins replaces Stan Drayton, who left to become assistant head coach at Texas.

Roy Anderson joined the staff as assistant secondary coach. He has eight years of NFL coaching experience with the 49ers, Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens.

Anderson replaces Sam Garnes, who was fired.

24 Sun exposure vital to vitamin D production Dear Doctor: How much sunshine do I need to get my daily dose of vitamin D? And does wearing sunscreen interfere with my body’s production of vitamin D? Dear Reader: The major source of our body’s vitamin D comes from our own production in the skin. This requires the ultraviolet rays from sunlight to form vitamin D3; both the liver and the kidneys are needed to then create the active form of vitamin D. Those with inadequate sun exposure – including disabled people, infants, the elderly, dark-skinned people and those who live at northern latitudes during the winter – are at risk of low vitamin D3 production, which can lead to a loss of bone density and an increased risk of fractures. Disabled people and infants are less likely to go outdoors, and people older than 70 don’t produce vitamin D3 from their skin as effectively. As for people with darker skin, they have more melanin, so less UV light gets absorbed to create vitamin D3.

So to begin to answer your question, we have to look at all the variables that affect vitamin D3 production: your skin pigmentation, your age, your latitude, the time of day when you go out in the sun and the season of the year.

A study done in Valencia, Spain, measured the amount of sunlight necessary to produce a sufficient amount of vitamin D in those with lighter skin. (Valencia is about the same latitude as Kansas City, Missouri.) The researchers took into account the amount of clothing and the season of the year. In spring and summer, 25 percent of the body (the hands, face, neck and arms) is exposed to the sun, and in these seasons, about 8 to 10 minutes of sun exposure at noon produces the recommended amount of vitamin D. In the winter, only 10 percent of the body is exposed, and nearly 2 hours of sun exposure at noon is

In the summer in Miami – with 25 percent of the body exposed to the sun – a person would need only 3 minutes of sun exposure to make a sufficient amount of vitamin D. That same person – when placed in Boston in the winter – would need 23 minutes at noon to produce enough vitamin D. Boston in the winter is really cold, so you probably would have only 5 percent or less of your body exposed to the sun. Thus, 23 minutes in the sun in Boston would need to be stretched to more than 2 hours to ensure sufficient sun exposure. In addition, if you have darker skin pigment, the time needed to produce sufficient vitamin D would be even longer.

As for sunscreen, it can decrease the formation of vitamin D3 by the skin, but again there are many variables, such as how much of your body has sunscreen, how thick the layer of sunscreen and the level of SPF. There is a balance – a Goldilocks zone – between sufficient sun exposure to make vitamin D3 and the risk of getting skin cancer.

Lastly, because our fat cells can store vitamin D for months, you don’t need to worry if there are days when you don’t get enough sun exposure. You’ll still be safe from the detrimental bone effects of low vitamin D if you get enough sun other days.

Many of your published letters come from unhappy married women. Some of them seem unable to get objective advice that would make themselves and their marriages happier. I’m fortunate to be happily married (33 years) to a wonderful woman who has a clear perspective. Three pearls of wisdom she could share: 1. Don’t sulk because your husband can’t read your mind. Trust him; he’d like to help.

And listen to your tone as you point out how he can.

2. The way you talk about him to your friends is an expression of your fidelity. Talk about him honestly, but with respect. If you do, he’ll admire and encourage your close friendships and take a sincere interest in your friends as people. If your MO is to grouse and complain about him, in his mind and heart he will feel you’re abandoning him.

3. Be clear that while your husband might say he’d like to treat you like a queen, you’re both better off being equals – partners, side-byside. In our marriage, there is no “better half.”

There are two halves.

In this sequence, South’s two-club response was Reverse Drury, announcing a suitable hand with spade support. Two no-trump was ambiguous (a slam-interest two-suiter or a 5-3-3-2 hand that might play better in three no-trump than four spades).

Three diamonds was natural. North agreed diamonds, then used Roman Key Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had the diamond king (five clubs) and both pointed-suit queens (six diamonds). Seven clubs asked South to choose the grand slam, which he did correctly.

Rosenberg won trick one with the heart ace, played a diamond to his king, ruffed a club, cashed the diamond ace, led a spade to the queen, removed the East’s third trump and claimed.

Note that North-South first agreed spades (where 13 tricks are impossible), then played in diamonds.

That takes homework and skill.
