What will 2017 add to your legacy? POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS As the years go by, many people accomplish great things or, by accident, make the headlines. Think back to what milestones or major events in your life are worth mentioning on your résumé or in an obituary.

Looking ahead to April, there are elections countywide where new people will take office or others be re-elected – mayors, council members, school board trustees and even a few city clerks. Those who win in each community can add that to their résumés or preserve for their obituaries. Other people may be appointed to some position, become president of a club or nonprofit, be honored for years of service or an outstanding accomplishment.

Unexpected recognitions also grab headlines – winning the Illinois Lottery, surviving a plane crash or performing a heroic act on the spur of the moment. So think back to when you did something or had something happen that could be included in your obit or on a résumé. Looking ahead, will 2017 be one of the years you have something monumental to record for posterity?

An old adage in the news business used to be that there are three times a person will have their name printed in the newspaper – when they are born, they get married and they die.

You can almost claim anything you want when you write your obituary, since the funeral directors never question a client’s honesty and newspapers (in most markets) only run paid notices, so take no responsibility for the content.

So if I decide I want to slip in a Pulitzer Prize for journalism or a Nobel Prize for literary achievement, who would be the wiser?

But you had better be careful how you got along with your surviving relatives or heirs.

That has happened in the past, although not locally.

It might be wise to compose your own obituary now and prepay the funeral home to have it “set in stone” so no one can tamper with your reputation once you go to “the great beyond.”

This general subject was discussed in a year-end commentary in the Chicago Tribune, and I found this quote worth sharing: “What you do starting today, how you live your life now, can rewrite your obituary for better or worse. What you have accomplished so far, who you have been up to now, may or may not make the final cut.”

If you find that hard to believe, think of Rod Blagojevich becoming governor of Illinois and where he is now; or Hillary Clinton, who was sure she would be the first woman elected U.S. president. What will be the lead sentence in their death notices – especially since they are famous enough to have their life stories written by professional news people, not by a family member or funeral home?

So you’d better start looking for that “good news” headline.

But don’t count on it being winning the lottery.

BOSTON – A cat that fell from a moving car on a Massachusetts highway on Christmas Day has been found alive.

Owner Erin McCutcheon was taking 6-year-old Juno from Boston to her mother’s house in New Hampshire when it slipped out of its carrier.

McCutcheon’s boyfriend, James Norton, opened

and re-shut their rattling van door, and the cat tumbled onto Interstate 93.

The couple spent days searching for the cat.

The Boston Globe reported that electricians doing maintenance work on I-93 on Wednesday found the cat crouched and hiding 80 feet up in the air on a steel girder that runs under the highway in Charlestown.

Grants to foot $72K cost for in-depth look at Ellwood House’s needs

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A $72,000 study that gets underway this month will chart a course for preserving one of DeKalb’s most iconic structures.

Officials from the Ellwood House Museum will be working with Restoric LLC of Chicago to develop a historic structure report.

A team from the company will investigate all aspects of the mansion, including its mechanics, exterior, interior and history from 1879 through the present.

The result will be a comprehensive report on the history of the 15,000-square-foot building, including documentation of its current condition and proposed plans to address current and future maintenance and restoration needs, Executive Director Brian Reis said.

It’s the first time in the mansion’s history that such a study has been undertaken, he said.

The Jeffris Family Foundation, based in Janesville, Wisconsin, helped spur the project. The foundation helps with the development of historic sites for nonprofit organizations in small towns and cities throughout the Midwest. It provided a 50 percent matching grant for the study.

“Working with the Jeffris Family Foundation has been a pleasure,” Reis said. “They know preservation and have a goal of helping smaller organizations and communities complete important preservation projects through careful study and implementation.”

Other funding for the study came from the DeKalb County Community Foundation and the Douglas C. and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation, Reis said.

The study is expected to be finished in October. Based on the findings of the report, the Ellwood House Museum will start a campaign in January 2018 to raise the money needed for preservation and restoration.

“It will provide a road map for understanding and caring for the building in perpetuity,” Reis said.

said. He said the company’s hands-on approach was important. The resulting report could be inches thick, he added.

How much money needs to be

raised in the 2018 campaign will be determined, in part, by the study. Johns said the fundraising campaign might not be as daunting as it seems given the strong community support for a

historic building that he called the “jewel of DeKalb.”

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for the community to rally around the Ellwood House to preserve it for future generations,” he said.

The Ellwood House mansion was designed by George O. Garnsey of Chicago in 1879 for Isaac and Harriet Ellwood and was modified, remodeled and enlarged in two other building campaigns in 1899 and 1910.

The grand mansion was continuously occupied by members of the Ellwood family until 1964.

At that time, the mansion, three other historic structures and eight acres of grounds were donated to the DeKalb Park District, and the Ellwood House Association was created to operate the site as a museum.

The museum site includes 10 acres of the original 1,100-acre estate, with seven historic structures.

Forge Brewhouse owners closer to downtown Sycamore council votes to amend city liquor codes, aligning with state codes

SYCAMORE – Plans to move the Forge Brewhouse to downtown Sycamore are progressing with a change to the city’s liquor code approved so the microbrewery can sell its own beer brewed off-site.

Sycamore City Council members voted unanimously Tuesday to amend city liquor codes to align with state codes.

Mayor Ken Mundy said Forge owners James and Lisa Heinrichs have had their hearts set on a downtown location since they opened their business in June 2015.

“I’m glad we’re able to accommodate and bring state and local code together so that we can do this effectively and have another unique shop downtown,” Mundy said.

Since their store opened, the Heinrichs have owned and operated the only brewpub in Sycamore at 1330 E. State St., just east of the intersection with Airport Road on the city’s east side.

The Heinrichs have a contract to buy the space occupied by the Super One Dollar Store at 327 W. State St. in downtown Sycamore.

In December, council members approved their request for a special-use permit to operate their restaurant and on-site brewpub at the new location.

Lisa Heinrich said the next step in their moving process is to find a suitable off-site brewing location, preferably in Sycamore.

“We haven’t crossed that road yet,” she said.

She said their timeline for opening in downtown Sycamore is open-ended, but it is “definitely not in the short-term.”

The restaurant eventually will move completely out of its old location and into the downtown location, potentially in conjunction with a different site used for brewing.

Heinrich said they wanted the option to brew off site to give the restaurant more space.

The new location has almost twice as much space because of its basement; however, the basement would not be used for seating, Lisa Heinrich said.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the Class H liquor license was amended in 2013 for Prairie State Winery to sell its own wine produced on- and off-site.

The new amendment will allow a microbrewery like Forge Brewhouse to have the same option as a winery.

“This would align that and make sure there’s no discrepancy with state law,” Gregory said. “You can’t brew and sell with the way the state law works, unless, like the winery, the licence is aligned with state law.”

The rule only applies to beer made under the sell-

er’s own label.

With the amendment in place, a Class H license holder can sell food in conjunction with the sale of its own beer or wine for consumption on site, according to the city code.

Forge Brewhouse serves a variety of pizza, sliders and sides, and it can do the same in the new location along with selling its own beer brewed off-site.

The license holder also can sell its own beer or wine in the original corked, capped, or sealed and labeled container for consumption off site.

The Class H license fee is $500.

After rejection for special-use permit, propane company sues county

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A contentious battle over plans for a propane storage facility is moving to the courtroom.

A Morris-based propane company is suing DeKalb County after being turned down for a special-use permit needed to build a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road in Mayfield Township outside Sycamore.

Dibble Family LLC claims in the lawsuit that the county failed to follow its own ordinances and improperly re-

jected the company’s application. The board members voted, 15-9, in November to deny the permit after strong opposition from neighboring homeowners.

The lawsuit claims the County Board’s decision was “arbitrary and not reasonable.”

Homeowners had threatened to sue if the board approved the permit.

The suit asks a judge to grant the special-use permit and to recover costs related to the litigation.

Dibble Family sought the permit to renovate the existing building on the

2.77-acre site and build two 30,000-gallon propane storage tanks on the northeast corner of the property. The company had planned to build a fence around the tanks and office areas.

The facility was to be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers.

About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers and agricultural businesses, according to county documents.

The suit was filed Dec. 21 by attorney David Bzdill. He couldn’t be reached for further comment. It names

the County Board, County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr., the County Planning and Zoning Committee, Planning and Zoning Committee Chairman Steve Faivre and Hearing Officer Ronald Klein.

The suit claims Klein’s findings were “based on conjecture, lay opinions and speculation of the general public.”

Pietrowski said that the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office would represent the county in the suit.

A case management conference is set for March 20 before Judge Bradley Waller.

DeKalb man faces life in prison for child sexual abuse

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man faces charges of predatory criminal sexual assault involving two children after an investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Carlos A. Botello, 25, of 825 W. Taylor St., No. 901, DeKalb, was charged with four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault, nine counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child and unlawful restraint. If convicted of counts involving two separate victims, he would face a mandatory life sentence.

The sheriff’s office started investigating Botello on Dec. 30 after learning of allegations of sexual contact between Botello and two children younger than 13, according to a news release.

Botello is accused of inappropriate contact with the children on multiple

occasions between October 2016 and Dec. 24, 2016, according to court records and the news release.

Police arrested Botello on Tuesday.

At a hearing Wednesday, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set Botello’s bond at $500,000.

Prosecutors had Carlos A. asked that bond be set Botello at $2 million. First Assistant State’s Attorney Stephanie Klein said the children “were not strangers” to Botello.

Botello, who works at IHOP, said he plans to hire an attorney, but was represented at the hearing by DeKalb County Public Defender Tom McCulloch.

Botello is next due in court Jan. 17. A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 3.

Born September 15, 1946, in DeKalb, he was the son of Albin and Ione (Ogle) Prebil.

Ronald was a self-employed carpenter.

He is survived by his children, Tim (Pam) Prebil, Brian (Cindy) Prebil of Sycamore, Michelle (Stephen) Moon of Georgia;

He was preceded in death by his parents.

LOCAL BRIEFS Sheriff’s office makes 9 DUI Man faces charges after arrests during holiday campaign attacking hospital staff SYCAMORE – DeKalb County Sheriff’s deputies arrested nine people for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the holiday season, officials said.

The sheriff’s office, as do many other law enforcement agencies statewide, regularly increases enforcement of traffic laws during holidays. The most recent enforcement period, which started Dec. 16 and ended Monday, was funded through federal traffic safety funds disbursed by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns.

From Dec. 16 to Sunday, sheriff’s deputies arrested nine drivers with blood alcohol concentrations higher than the legal limit of 0.08 percent or who were impaired by other drugs, according to a news release sent Thursday.

Police also issued citations to 21 drivers who were not wearing seat belts, according to the release.

DeKALB – A patient at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital attacked several hospital staff members Wednesday evening, and when he was discharged Thursday morning, police were waiting.

Charles Long, 47, of the 800 block of Ridge Drive, was charged with Charles aggravated battery and Long criminal damage to property, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they were called to the hospital about 5 p.m. Wednesday. Once there, they learned that Long had battered three hospital staff members and damaged hospital equipment.

Long was discharged from the hospital and taken to the DeKalb County Jail, where he was being held Thursday evening.

The four people accused of taunting and torturing a mentally ill Crystal Lake man and streaming it on Facebook Live now face multiple felony charges.

Chicago police announced the charges Thursday against the alleged assailants, three of whom are from Chicago and one from Carpentersville, although Carpentersville police dispute that. The two men and two women face multiple felony charges, including hate crime charges – the 18-year-old victim is white, and the four assailants are black.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office charged Jordan Hill, 18, of Carpentersville; Tesfaye Cooper, 18, of Chicago; Brittany Covington, 18, of Chicago; and Tanisha Covington, 24, of Chicago. Besides the hate crime charge, all four face charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Cooper and Brittany Covington also face residen-

tial burglary charges, while Hill also faces charges of robbery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The disturbing 30-minute video, which has sparked national outrage, shows the 18-year-old man, who according to police reports suffers from mental illness, cowering in the corner of a room, tied up with his mouth taped shut. In the video, the man is beaten, gets his hair cut with a knife and has ashes from what appear to be cigarettes dumped on him. They also kick and punch him, at times shouting “f*** white people” and “f*** Donald Trump.” A second online video showed the assailants shoving the victim’s head in a toilet and forcing him to drink from it, after which he was forced to yell obscenities about Trump.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson at Thursday’s afternoon news conference announcing the charges condemned the “deplorable acts” committed by the suspects.

DeKALB – Bidding is expected to open Monday for a roughly $1 million park maintenance facility that was approved by the DeKalb Park District board Thursday during a special meeting.

The 11,000-square-foot building’s design plans were approved on a 3-2 vote. President Phil Young and Commissioners Keith Nyquist and Dag Grada voted in favor of the building design while Commissioners Dean Holliday and Bryant Irving voted against it.

Funds previously budgeted for the project will be used for the project, requiring no tax increase, district Executive Director Amy Doll said.

The facility will be built upon the same site and be about the same size as the previous maintenance building, which was condemned in November 2014.

Irving said he was concerned that this would not leave enough space for future storage.

“I just don’t want five years down the road that we come back and say the building isn’t big enough to get more equipment,” Irving said. “If we’re going to build this, let’s build it right to save taxpayers money down the road. I want to protect the employees and taxpayers of DeKalb.”

Objections were raised by Holliday and Irving over the use of wood instead of steel as a structural material for the facility.

Jason Estes, principal architect with FGM Architects out of Oak Brook, which is designing the building, said that using steel instead would cost about $150,000 more for the construction.

Police during the 15-minute conference shed some new light on how the crime unfolded and how the victim was rescued.

The victim’s parents dropped him off on New Year’s Eve at a McDonald’s in Streamwood to meet up with Hill to spend the night.

Hill picked him up in a van he had recently stolen, unbeknownst to the victim, to visit with friends, police Cmdr.

Kevin Duffin said. Duffin said the victim and Hill knew one another Jordan Hill from attending school together in Aurora.

The parents filed a missing person report Monday with the Streamwood Police Department, according to the report obtained under the Illinois Free- Tesfaye dom of Information Act. Cooper Streamwood police listed him as endangered because of his mental health history and the fact that he had last taken his medication Saturday.

Hill and the victim ended up Tuesday at the West Side apartment of Brittany and Tanisha Covington, who are sisters. Apparently, a play fight between the victim and Hill got out of control, leading the suspects to get angry and overpower and bind the victim. The assault, part of which was streamed live by the suspects, took place over a six-hour period, Duffin said.

The victim escaped when the sisters went to a downstairs apartment to challenge a neighbor who threatened to call the police because of the noise.

The sisters kicked in the neighbor’s door, prompting the police to be called and the sisters each to be charged with burglary, police said.

Officer Michael Donnelly, one of the police officers responding to the call about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, said that he

noticed the victim and Hill walking down the street and stopped them because the victim was bloodied and battered, wearing a tank top, jean shorts and sandals in the cold.

Duffin said the victim has been reunited with his parents.

At a news conference held Thursday in Crystal Lake, the victim’s family said he is doing “as well as he could be at this time.”

“We’re so grateful for all the prayers and efforts that led to the safe return of our brother,” the victim’s brotherin-law, David Boyd, said on behalf of the family. “We are fully aware of the charges being brought against the offenders.”

The family said they had seen the video, and the attack “should never have happened.” They asked for prayers and privacy as they heal.

Brittany Johnson said they Covington have statements from all four suspects, and Duffin said they were not apologetic for their actions.

Authorities did not specify at the conference under what Tanisha grounds the defendants were charged with hate Covington crimes.

Under Illinois law, hate crime charges can be filed not only for attacks based on racial or religious reasons, but also for physical and mental disability.

The Carpentersville Police Department said in a statement that there is no information confirming that Hill is a resident. Likewise, the report filed with Streamwood police stated that Quadcomm, the dispatching agency for Carpentersville, confirmed that the address Hill gave during a previous encounter with Streamwood police does not exist.

All four suspects have 1 p.m. hearings Friday in Cook County bond court.

Although the deadline passed without the goal being met, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness said it won’t rest until every com-

The nonprofit Community Solutions also ran a campaign to end veteran homelessness by the end of 2015 and chronic homelessness one year later, called “Zero: 2016.” That work continues under a new name, “Built for Zero.”

“I think we’re going to make a big dent this year, and I would say within a couple of years, we should be there,” McDonald said.

The number of homeless veterans nationwide is down 47 percent, or about 35,000 people, since 2010, but there still are about 40,000 more, HUD said in August.

To get homeless veterans into permanent homes, the Obama administration used a program that was created in 2008 and combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services from the VA. Nearly 90,000 so-called HUD-VASH vouchers have been awarded, with $635 million appropriated for vouchers from 2008 to 2016. Many places were able to house most of their homeless veterans, but vouchers became harder to use as the housing market tightened.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Pledges by President Barack Obama and a national nonprofit organization to end homelessness among veterans did not meet their goal. But advocates see improvement, and the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs said Thursday that “we should be there” within a couple of years.

Homelessness among veterans has been effectively ended in Virginia, Connecticut and Delaware and in about 35 communities, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. But many veterans still sleep on the streets elsewhere.

Still, as Obama’s term ends, advocates call the national push a success because many veterans did get homes, and the ambitious goal created urgency. About two dozen nonprofits, government officials and homeless veterans in 17 states and Washington spoke with The Associated Press about the effectiveness of the effort and the challenges they faced.

SPRINGFIELD – A Springfield medical group is requiring patients insured by the state to pay half of their expected surgery bills up front.

The requirement from the Orthopedic Center of Illinois comes at a time when payments to all providers for the care of state workers, retirees and dependents insured through the State Employees’ Group Insurance Program total $3.66 billion. Those payments are overdue a year and a half or more, the State Journal-Register reported.

National Guard soldiers return from Afghanistan

SPRINGFIELD – About 30 Illinois Army National Guard members who served in Afghanistan during the past year have returned home during the past few weeks.

Officials said members of the 233rd Military Police Company based in Springfield came home after completing a post-mobilization program at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The soldiers were mobilized in January 2016 as part of a personal security detail.

The 233rd was responsible for escorting general officers, VIPs, U.S. and foreign dignitaries, advisers and NATO officials throughout Kabul and the region.

They also guarded the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. military base.

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said he’s discussed a pending civil rights report on the Chicago police with President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to head the Department of Justice.

The Illinois Democrat spoke to reporters after Wednesday’s meeting in Washington, D.C., with Sen. Jeff Sessions, a Republican from Alabama.

Durbin said he sought assurances that if Sessions is confirmed as U.S. attorney general, he would address problems identified by the department.

U of I employees to get 2 percent midyear raises

URBANA – University of Illinois employees will receive a 2 percent raise in March after the school had to put pay increases on hold for the past two years.

The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that a school spokesman said the raises will take effect in February and the money will show up in March paychecks.

University President Tim Killeen put general raises on hold for a second-straight year last summer because of the state budget impasse. But Killeen said he was optimistic the school could provide a midyear raise by making cuts elsewhere.

Killeen said most of the money to fund the raises will come from about 500 positions that haven’t been refilled over the past year. UI officials said the 2 percent raise will cost about $33 million a year.

And he called the former Cold War foe an “existential threat” to the nation.

Did Russian hacking sway the results? There’s no way for U.S. agencies to know, said James Clapper, the director of national intelligence.

Asked about the possible effect of the disclosure of private information stolen by hackers, Clapper said, “The intelligence community can’t gauge the impact it had on the choices the electorate made.” But he did say Russian hacking “did not change any vote tallies.”

Clapper’s testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee was short on concrete evidence of Russian activities, but it raised the stakes in the intelligence community’s standoff with Trump. Clapper indicated the agencies he leads would not back down in their assessment, even if that threatens a prolonged crisis of confidence with their next commander in chief.

That puts the pressure back on Trump, who has raised the possibility of more positive relations with Russia and has repeatedly disparaged the U.S. intelligence agencies. He will be briefed Friday on the classified evidence concerning Russian interference.

Shortly after Thursday’s hearing, news leaked that Trump would soon name former Republican Sen. Dan Coats of Indiana to replace Clapper after the new president takes office.

In a joint report that roiled the presidential campaign last fall, the Homeland Security Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said the U.S. was confident about foreign meddling, including Russia’s hacking of Democratic emails.

“We stand actually more resolutely on the strength of that statement,” Clapper said Thursday. He declined to discuss whether Russia’s interference was aimed at helping Trump win.

An unclassified version of the report will be released next week, Clapper said. That version, expected to be a fraction of the length of the classified one, is not likely to answer all the questions about Russia’s actions. Exactly how the U.S. monitors its adversaries in cyberspace is a closely guarded secret, since revealing such details could help foreign governments further obscure

their activities.

“I think the public should know as much about this as possible,” Clapper told the senators. “And so we’ll be as forthcoming as we can, but there are some sensitive and fragile sources and methods here.”

Clapper was less shy about declaring Russia “an existential threat to the United States.” That’s strong rhetoric that harkens back to the Cold War between the U.S. and Soviet Union, language Obama has avoided. For his part, Trump has embraced the possibility of warmer U.S.-Russian ties.

Republican John McCain of Arizona, chairman of the Senate panel, pressed Clapper as to whether Russia’s actions constituted an “act of war.”

The intelligence director said that was “a very heavy policy call,” more appropriate for others in the government to decide.

Obama announced sanctions against Russia late last year, a move Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said was akin to throwing a pebble.

“I’m ready to throw a rock,” Graham said.

Mobile video changes the way we witness crime

NEW YORK – Mobile video is changing the way we witness crime, from live footage of a mentally disabled man tortured by four assailants, to a recording that led to the manslaughter conviction of an Israeli soldier, to the body cameras designed to keep police accountable.

We’re still all wrestling with the implications.

In theory, such videos should make it easier to hold criminals, including police officers who violate the law, accountable.

In practice, that hasn’t always worked out the way proponents had hoped, although smartphone video played a big role in elevating public awareness of police violence. And sometimes the presence of a camera might actually encourage criminal activity, or at least deter bystanders from helping victims.

It’s not clear how any of that might have played out in an incident on this week, when attackers used Facebook Live to stream the beating and torture of a man with mental health problems.

They threatened him with a knife, cut off his clothing and forced him to drink from

a toilet.

The assault went on for up to two days, according to police, although it’s unclear how much of it was streamed on Facebook Live. Police have arrested four people in connection with the crime.

Last year, an Ohio woman plead not guilty to charges of rape, kidnapping and other crimes for live-streaming the rape of a friend on Periscope, Twitter’s live-streaming app. Prosecutors said Marina Lonina continued to film the assault despite the victim’s cries for help, caught up in the attention the livestream was getting. Lonina’s attorney said she was recording the attack as evidence.

During a Thursday news conference about the Chicago assault – itself livestreamed on Facebook – Chicago police Cmdr. Kevin Duffin noted, “I can’t understand why anyone puts anything on Facebook.”

much longer than live streams. While live broadcast gives them a sense of immediacy, many live videos only go viral well after the fact. So it may not really matter whether a video is live or not, just that it’s a concrete record of a crime that happened, visible to all who dare to click.

Even then, video evidence doesn’t necessarily lead to criminal convictions.

In South Carolina, a white police officer was charged with the 2015 shooting of an unarmed black man after a traffic stop. A video shot by a bystander clearly shows Keith Scott being shot eight times in the back.

But the jury was unable to reach a verdict and forced a mistrial. In another case in Ohio, the two sides in the trial clashed over a video from a police officer’s bodyworn camera that showed him shooting an unarmed man after a traffic stop. That case also ended in mistrial. The officer, Ray Tensing, will be retried.

As for users, a quick trip down memory lane confirms that some people will do almost anything in front of a camera to get online attention. Before Twitter gutted its quirky video-sharing app Vine, a popular phrase among users was “do it for the Vine,” the idea that people will do anything just for the sake of a six-second Vine video.

Videos give harsh glimpse into evil world

What happened to a Crystal Lake teen who suffers from mental illness paints another horrific picture of what is happening to individuals in some Chicago neighborhoods and the general coarsening of our culture.

The heinous humiliation and torture was broadcast live on the internet via Facebook and YouTube complete with racial taunting and the stomach-churning treatment of a human being.

The inclination from any decent person is to look away. While not everyone needed to have witnessed this spectacle, as a culture we must examine it for what it is, and acknowledge there is real hatred perpetrated against real people in these neighborhoods every day.

In addition to hate crime charges, Jordan Hill, 18, of Carpentersville; Tesfaye Cooper, 18, of Chicago; Brittany Covington, 18, of Chicago; and Tanisha Covington, 24, of Chicago, all face charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

From our suburban perch, we are saddened and troubled by the senseless shooting deaths in Chicago neighborhoods, many of which are the deaths of innocent bystanders. The numbers have become staggering – Chicago ended 2016 with 762 homicides, more than New York City and Los Angeles combined.

While we are saddened, the sheer volume and media coverage leave many numb. When something horrific happens to one of our neighbors, that numbness turns to anger. While we’re extremely grateful that he’s alive, we want his attackers to face justice.

This is what life is like every day for so many in North Lawndale, Austin, Englewood, Garfield Park and other Chicago neighborhoods that have turned into nationally notorious war zones. There are good people in all of those neighborhoods just seeking safety every day. Justice sounds as likely to them as unicorns grazing in city parks.

Based on the evidence we’ve been allowed to see, the hate crimes and other charges appear to be justified. The defendants are entitled to a presumption of innocence, but if they are found guilty of these heinous crimes, we hope the punishment fits.

In the meantime, we hope all those who prey on the weak and innocent in these neighborhoods without regard to human life, much less dignity, meet similar fates.

Congress’ ethics reform controversy The 115th Congress flopped into Washington on Tuesday with House Republicans proposing and then dropping marginal changes to an internal ethics office. The reversal is an unforced political error, but the GOP is right that the investigative body has the power to destroy reputations without due process.

The office is composed of political grandees, often former members, and it has no prosecutorial power. But it conducts investigations into members or staffers and makes recommendations to the House Ethics Committee. The proposal limited what information can be released to the public and barred the committee from having a press secretary.

Speaker Paul Ryan and other House leaders opposed the rule as badly timed. But the rank and file adopted the idea Monday night anyway, only to dump it on Tuesday after denunciations from the Democratic-media complex. The left rounded up callers to deluge Republican switchboards for “gutting” the outfit. Donald Trump

couldn’t resist piling on with a pair of tweets: “With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it may be, their number one act and priority.”

The reality is that the office is at best redundant and perhaps worse. Democrats created the office in 2008 to deflect attention from a crush of corruption scandals, including charges against at least three members. The left is pitching the place as an essential institution of self-government, but the Senate manages to function without a similar office.

As it is, the ethics office is a roving investigator that can publish reports with details that may not be accurate and can damage a reputation with little or no proof of guilt. Evidence of wrongdoing in travel, campaign finances and other matters can be handled by the House Ethics Committee, and if necessary, law enforcement agencies. Both are politically accountable, unlike the independent office.

The burning question in the media has been whether Trump or public outcry deserve credit for the GOP’s about-face. In any case, House Republicans will pay a political price for trying, then failing, to rush through ethics changes – after running on draining the D.C. swamp. By caving so precipitously at the first sign of opposition, they’ve also invited more such pressure campaigns.

The upshot is an embarrassing start for a new GOP Congress that is supposed to be stalwart for pursuing conservative reform no matter the opposition. Progressives are elated that their Trump “resistance” project notched a victory and will continue the fact-free outrage campaigns. If you think the political pressure is intense on ethics rules, wait until the left completes its nationwide talent search for the person most harmed by the GOP’s healthcare proposals. Trump will also figure he can rout any opposition with a tweet, not that he’s known for restraint.

We are not the enemy regardless of what Trump tweets On the last day of December, this was Donald Trump’s greeting for America – via Twitter, of course: “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!”

My immediate response to this infantile tweet from the future president of the United States was to donate to a diaper charity. See? I do know what to do.

Let’s talk about those diapers for a moment. I first wrote about this issue in 2015, after learning that parents – particularly single mothers – who cannot afford enough diapers for their babies are likelier to struggle with depression.

The need is great, so please consider donating to one of the diaper charities in your community. They’re growing in number, including at some food banks.

Now, let’s address this unparalleled dysfunction about to take over the White House. It’s a remarkable thing, really, for our future president to identify as an enemy to anyone who didn’t vote for him or who dares to challenge him now.

Let’s all sit with that for a moment.

Don’t blame those working to protect children

The state’s attorney’s office works to make sure criminals serve time in prison, even when they know they won’t get the full sentence these families deserve. A loophole in this law, a slight error in phrasing of evidence, or even just a really good defense attorney can help a criminal and leave us feeling hopeless.

We feel as if those who are supposed to be dedicated to protecting our children have failed us.

The truth of the matter is, although they make mistakes (because they are human like the rest of us), they work incredibly hard with a great deal of passion to stop abusers in our community. DAILY CHRONICLE The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb will host the Winter 2017 Woman Spirit Conference “Just Women: Just World” from Feb. 3 to 5.

The conference will feature keynote speaker Sister Simone Campbell, executive director of NETWORK, a leader in the global justice and peace movement, as well as a driving force behind the “Nuns on the Bus” bus tours that traveled throughout the U.S. The conference also will include a musical workshop and concert by the duo Emma’s Revolution, made up of award-winning activist musicians Pat Humphries and Sandy O, as well as workshops and musical performances

by DeKalb-area women.

Sister The Woman Spirit Conference is sponSimone sored by the Women & Religion Committee, Campbell a group of Unitarian Universalist women from the Midwest, which is associated with the Unitarian Universalist Association.

The committee’s mission is to support women in their search for the Inner Feminine Divine, in an atmosphere of connectedness, safety and joy. The conference is open to women of all religious backgrounds, and all conference events are open and welcoming to all those who identify as female.

After seeing how the national budget treated the poor, Sister Simone Campbell created “Nuns on the Bus.” This group of dedicated Sisters of Social Service traveled on a bus across the U.S. speaking about justice wherever they could. They advocated the passage of the Affordable Care Act. When it passed, Campbell was standing next to President Barack Obama, in recognition of her work on the issue.

Campbell was the lead attorney in Oakland, California, at the Community Law Center, working with the poor and disenfranchised. She then became executive director of the Sisters of Social Service. Since 2004, she has been director of the Network National Catholic Lobby. She is a religious leader, poet, attorney, advocate for fairness and public defender of the common good.

Epiphany is the celebration of the arrival of the wise men – the three kings – from the East to visit the Christ child. This celebration begins a season of looking for where The Light of Christ is manifested in people’s lives and in the world.

Senior Warden Rick Johns said Walker will be missed and the congregation wishes her well. Ruud achieves Eagle Scout rank DAILY CHRONICLE Preston Ruud, a member of Boy Scout Troop 16 chartered at Federated Church in Sycamore was recently awarded the Eagle rank, the highest award achievable in Boy Scouts. Preston is the son of David and Kathy Ruud of Sycamore.

Preston Ruud first experienced Scouting while attending Boy Scout activities with his older brother. He joined Cub Scouts in first grade with Pack 140 and earned ranks of Bear, Webelos I and II, and in 2013 he earned the Arrow of Light award. At age 12, he joined Boy Scouts Troop 16.

Preston continued his trail to Eagle serving as patrol leader, quartermaster, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader.

He enjoyed numerous campouts, troop activities and service projects, and attended Tesomas Scout Camp, Tomahawk Scout Reservation and National Youth Leader Training in 2016.

He has experienced three high adventure trips including current river rafting in Missouri, North Woods High Adventure: Scuba Diving, and the Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base. He earned 28 merit badges.

Ruud’s Eagle Scout project benefited the residents of Oak Crest, and it entailed building two

raised flower beds. He chose the project to honor his grandmother, Helen Ruud, a resident at Oak Crest who loved to garden.

With the assistance of his fellow Scouts, Ruud led the project and the volunteers built two raised garden centers. They were built with wheels on the legs so they can be easily moved around and are tall enough so residents in wheelchairs can wheel directly underneath to easily plant flowers, vegetables and maintain the plants.

Unfortunately, his grandma passed away in December 2015 and was unable to experience the flower beds. But other Oak Crest residents can enjoy the gardens in her honor.

Ruud recently held his formal Eagle ceremony along with five other Scouts who also achieved the rank. Ruud thanked his parents, brother and sister, his mentor, Jim Hunt, Kevin Cady, Dan Foley, the Scouts and adult leaders in Troop 16, Scoutmaster Dr. Tim Ruetten, and Oak Crest.

Ruud is a freshman at Sycamore High School and is involved in football, basketball and track. He also is a 4-H member.

Troop 16 is a strong troop with more than 45 active Scouts. Any boy age 11 to 18 is invited to join; no past Scouting experience or background is required.

Barbs secure conference title

Go undefeated in NI Big 12 East regular season

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In four conference matches, the DeKalb wrestling team has used four different lineups.

It didn’t stop the Barbs from winning all four, including Thursday’s 4825 victory over Kaneland to secure the regular-season Northern Illinois Big 12 East title.

First-year coach Sam Hiatt said no matter who he threw out there, they wrestled hard for the Barbs (10-9, 4-0 NI Big 12 East) in claiming a regular-season title for the second straight year.

“That was one of our goals coming into the season, to be conference champ,” Hiatt said. “Every school out there has the dream of being a conference champ. It’s not our end goal, and now we can move on to the conference championship tournament and get our guys ready for regionals and sectionals and state.”

DeKalb stormed out to a 33-0 lead.

Blake Hanson (120 pounds), Christian Komitas (126) and Austin Johnson (132) scored first-period pins, followed by Cole Kelly (138) picking up a forfeit victory. Logan Roach (145) added to the hot start with a first-period pin.

The match ended with a showdown between ranked wrestlers at 120 – Fabian Lopez (12th in Class 3A by Illinois Matmen) and Austin Kedzie (third in 2A). Kedzie started with four quick points on a takedown and nearfall. He elected to start the second period on the bottom up 4-1, but Lopez got a nearfall before Kedzie could escape.

The score was 5-4 after Kedzie allowed an escape by Lopez before the third period started, and Lopez came close to a takedown in the final seconds, but Kedzie held on for the win.

Kedzie said he wrestled poorly.

“I quit wrestling it felt like after the middle of the second period,” Kedzie said. “I need to work on my conditioning. I need to keep grinding, morning and night, to get to where I need to be.”

Hiatt said Lopez already is looking forward to a possible rematch Jan. 21 in Kaneland at the conference tournament.

“That was the dual match everyone wanted to see,” Hiatt said. “We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we’ll get a rematch at conference, and Fabian will go back to work and keep getting better.”

With the Barbs staked to a huge lead, DeKalb’s Jacobe Schmerbach wrestled Trevor Jones at 160. He led

6-4 after two periods, then started with a reverse in the third period to extend the lead, going on to win 10-5.

Although he said he was hoping for more than a decision, he was happy to come away with a win.

“In that third going in pretty close, I wanted to extend my lead and maybe get a major or perhaps a pin,” Schmer-

bach said. “I saw he was off to the side a little bit, so I figured if I hit it right away, I could get it real easily.”

Riley Vanik had a pin for the Knights at 182, and Colin Gussman added a pin for Kaneland at 220. Hayden Patterson had Kaneland’s first team point with a pin at 170. Nathan Orosco added a major decision, 13-2, at 106 for the Knights.

Niels Lewerentz added a thrilling victory for the Barbs as 195. He overcame a cramp that required two injury stoppages in the third period after the first two periods were scoreless. He had an escape and a takedown to start the third, but a reverse after the first stoppage by Ulysses Frias-Martinez made it 3-2. Frias-Martinez went low for a late desperation takedown for the win, but Lewerentz read it and got a takedown of his own in the closing seconds for a 5-2 win.

“The matches we lost, it was kind of the abandoning of principles we’ve been teaching from Day 1,” Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said. “But that’s what practice is for. They have to work harder.”

After the Hawks were whistled for too many men on the ice, Okposo stuffed one home from the side of the net for his team-best 12th goal. Anisimov then sent a wrist shot over Nilsson’s glove for his 17th of the season, tying it at 2 with 1:32 remaining in the period.

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane stayed on the ice long enough to shoot the Blackhawks to a sorely needed victory.

Kane scored 56 seconds into overtime, Artem Anisimov had two goals and the Hawks beat the Buffalo Sabres, 4-3, Thursday night.

Jonathan Toews set up Kane’s 12th goal when he forced Anders Nilsson to make a left pad save. The rebound went right to the reigning NHL MVP, who knocked it into the open side of net before Nilsson could recover.

Coach Joel Quenneville was trying to get Kane off the ice before he scored the winning goal.

“The time I wanted him to come was the right time, and then he knew that, then it was a little too late, that he had to stay,” Quenneville said. “I give him credit. He knows the game.”

The Central Division-leading Hawks had dropped three in a row at home and five of six overall. Kane also had two assists against his hometown team, and Corey Crawford made 17 stops in the Hawks’ 10th consecutive

Kyle Okposo had a goal and an assist for the Sabres, and Ryan O’Reilly had two assists in his return from an appendectomy. Jack Eichel also scored, and Nilsson finished with 39 stops.

24 Vitamin E’s benefits may be overrated Dear Doctor: I’ve been taking vitamin E for years because it’s an antioxidant and supposed to be good for me, but my doctor told me recently I shouldn’t be taking it. Is that correct?

Dear Reader: Just before I graduated medical school in 1997, I wrote a review about vitamin E. Due to its apparent antioxidant effect, it appeared to have great benefits not just for decreasing the risk of heart disease, but also for decreasing the risk of cancer.

I was convinced by two large observational studies that were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1993. These studies analyzed data from both men and women who had filled out a questionnaire about diet and supplements and who were then followed for a period of four to eight years. The results were promising. Those women who took vitamin E had 34 percent fewer heart attacks compared with those women who didn’t take vitamin E. Among men, those who took vitamin E had 37 percent fewer heart attacks than men who didn’t take a supplement.

I was convinced and ready to preach the benefits of vitamin E. But the biggest problem is a questionnaire is not a good assessment of daily vitamin E intake. Thus, studies were needed that looked at intake of vitamin E supplements versus placebo.

The 2005 Women’s Health Study followed almost 40,000 women over a 10-year period, giving one group of women 600 international units (IU) of vitamin E every other day and the other a placebo. Researchers found no difference in rates of heart attacks. Then there was the 2008 Physicians’ Health Study, which assessed the impact of 400 IU of vitamin E every other day – and, again, researchers found no difference in the rate of heart attacks.

Those looking at vitamin E and prostate cancer have found no benefit from supplementation. Although one study did find a decrease in prostate cancer in Finnish smokers who took 50 IU of vitamin E daily, further studies did not support this benefit.

A study in China found people with good dietary intake of vitamin E had a lower risk of developing lung cancer, but those who took vitamin E supplements had a higher risk of lung cancer. In addition, vitamin E supplements have been shown not to have benefit in reducing the risk of either colon cancer or the formation of colon polyps.

Some experts suspect vitamin E may even increase the rates of prostate and lung cancer, as well as increasing the virulence of melanoma.

As for the other reported benefits of vitamin E, such as its potential to decrease the risk of colds, cataracts or dementia, those benefits have not panned out.

Currently, the recommended daily amount of vitamin E daily is 15 milligrams.

You can get this from three ounces of almonds. Since vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, if you have problems absorbing fat, you might need more of it in your diet and should consider a supplement.

But a vitamin E supplement has no benefit for a healthy individual who has a normal intake of vitamin E through the diet.

My brother and sister-inlaw have been dressing my 2-year-old nephew, “Charlie,” in dresses and pink clothes.

They say these are what the boy has chosen.

To me, a toddler will pick out whatever gets his attention at the moment, and children that age have only a rudimentary understanding of gender.

It would be one thing if Charlie were old enough to understand and still insisted he felt more comfortable in girls’ clothing. But at his age I feel what they’re doing will only confuse him. Keep in mind, I do not believe this is a transgender issue. I think people who are transgender should dress and act the way they feel.

My parents (the boy’s grandparents) are worried and angry. My sister-in-law knows this upsets my mother and yet it’s as if she’s taunting her with texts and pictures of Charlie in pink and/or dresses. Are we overreacting? –

In this deal, the defenders were Brad Moss (East) and Joe Grue. East could not open with a weak twobid in diamonds. North’s one-heart response showed spades. His second-round jump to four hearts asked his partner to choose between four spades and four hearts.

West led the diamond six, third-highest from an even number or lowest from an odd number. The declarer ruffed in the dummy, played a spade to his ace and returned a spade to dummy’s king, relieved to see the 2-2 split. Now South had two chances: finding East with the club ace or playing hearts for only one loser.

In hearts, declarer could have won if East had honor-10-doubleton or 10-doubleton, or either opponent had king-queen-doubleton and South guessed correctly.

At trick four, declarer led a low heart from the board, and East sowed a misleading seed by playing his 10. West did his part by taking South’s jack with his king, then leading a second diamond.

Declarer ruffed in the dummy and tried a club to his king, but West won with his ace and played a third diamond.

Now South had to guess hearts.

It really looked as though East had started with queen-10-doubleton, so declarer cashed the heart ace and went down one.
