‘Star Wars’ princess Carrie Fisher dies

The Associated Press NEW YORK – No one could make us laugh through the pain like Carrie Fisher.

The daughter of Hollywood stars Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, and a survivor of early fame, drug addiction and bipolar disorder, she wrote with unsentimental wit and understanding about her private struggles and about an industry she was raised in but stood apart from.

Fisher, known to the world as Princess Leia of “Star Wars,” died Tuesday at 60, four days after falling ill aboard an airline flight. Media reports said the actress had suffered a heart attack.

“I do believe you’re only as sick as your secrets. If that’s true, I’m just really healthy,” she said in a confessional 2009 interview with The Associated Press.

The public fell in love with her twice: as Princess Leia and as the wry truth-teller of such books as “Postcards From the Edge,” “Wishful Drinking” and “The Princess Diarist,” in which she revealed having an intense affair with “Star Wars” co-star Harrison Ford.

Fisher told plenty of secrets about others – about her parents’ breakup when she was 2, about being advised by Warren Beatty on wearing a bra in “Shampoo,” and about arguing with then-husband Paul Simon about whether it was better to be a man or a woman.

Asked by NPR recently why she wrote about her fling with Ford, who was 15 years older and married, she joked that she could hold back no longer because he had refused to die: “I kept calling and saying, ‘When are you going to die because I want to tell the story?’”

But she was toughest on herself and unafraid to turn trauma into humor. She became the most knowable of celebrities, with a great and generous gift for bringing us into her unusual life.

“One of the therapists came in to admit me and asked how long I had been a drug addict,” she wrote in “Postcards,” her autobiographical novel that became a movie of the same name. “I said I didn’t think I was a drug addict because I didn’t take any one drug. ‘Then you’re a drugs addict,’ she said. She asked if I had deliberately tried to kill myself. I was insulted by the question. I guess when you find yourself having overdosed, it’s a good indicator that your life isn’t working.”

Born and raised in Beverly Hills, Carrie Fisher was a bookish child who had difficult relationships with both parents. In a celebrity breakup that made headlines everywhere in 1958, Eddie Fisher left his family for Elizabeth Taylor.

Eddie Fisher was hardly present in his daughter’s early years, and Reynolds’ second husband, shoe store magnate Harry Karl, was even worse.

He squandered his own money and Reynolds’ on gambling and prostitutes and left the actress and her children broke and devastated.

Carrie Fisher went into the family business early – too early, she would later say. She was performing on stage by age 12 and appeared with Reynolds in the 1973 Broadway revival “Irene.”

She was still a teenager when she made her feature film debut in “Shampoo” in 1975.

Even after “Star Wars,” Fisher would speak often of feeling overshadowed by her mother and about the need to break away, a conflict dramatized in “Postcards From the Edge.”

Mother and daughter were estranged for years but reconciled later in life and came to admire each other’s talent and determination.

“Bright Lights: Starring Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher,” an HBO documentary, is scheduled for release in 2017.

icking the top news story of 2016 was not an easy task for Shaw Media editors.

On Nov. 8, Republican Donald Trump pulled off one of the greatest political upsets in modern American history.

But barely a week before, the Chicago Cubs won the World Series in a seven-game matchup for the ages.

Chicago Cubs win World Series

Sometimes, the best lead for a story is saying it plain – the Chicago Cubs won the World Series.

The curses are broken. This year was the year.

Hell has frozen over. The Cubs are “lovable losers” no more. Lovable, yes, but certainly not losers. And it took only 108 years since the Cubs’ last World Series championship.

Five years after losing 100 games in the first season under new president of baseball operations Theo Epstein – who helped the Boston Red Sox end their 86-year World Series drought – the

Trump rides anti-establishment sentiment to win presidency over Clinton

Up until Nov. 8, the conventional wisdom among the political and media elite was that the 2016 presidential election was Hillary Clinton’s to lose.

Which she did, when voters delivered in a historic political upset that ended one of the most bitter and contentious election cycles in memory against two historically unpopular candidates.

Trump won the key battleground states he needed to defeat Clinton, also narrowly flipping Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania – the last time a Republican carried any of those states was 1988 – giving him 306 electoral votes to 232 for Clinton. However, Clinton beat Trump in the popular vote by 2.9 million votes.

Voters also left the U.S. Senate under Republican control, giving the GOP control in Washington of both the White House and Congress.

Illinois’ budget impasse continues

Come Sunday, Illinois will head into its third calendar year without a permanent budget. But the news gets worse.

An impasse that started in 2015 when the Democratic-controlled General Assembly submitted a deficit budget that Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed cooled off somewhat when lawmakers on June 30 approved a six-month stopgap budget. That budget expires with the new year, again leaving the state government without a AP file photo spending plan.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner Rauner, a Republican elected in 2014 on a platform of stopping the state’s downward spiral, has said he will not approve any budget without reforms such as term limits or a statewide property-tax freeze. Meetings of “working groups” of lawmakers from both parties have not succeeded in hammering out any sort of final deal.

While state workers are being paid and most state duties continue to get financed under court orders, social service agencies are hurting because of chronically late reimbursements.

Cubs ended the regular season with a 103-58-1 record.

The Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games to win their first National League pennant since 1945. That was followed by what could be one of the most memorable and entertaining World Series duels in the history of the sport.

One game away from elimination, the Cubs won the next three, ending with a Game 7 nail-biter that went into 10 innings after a 17-minute rain delay, to win it all.

More than 5 million people attended the Cubs’ victory parade and rally in Chicago.

Police shootings under scrutiny in a dangerous year for cops

Police continued to find themselves not only under greater scrutiny over officer-involved shootings including African-Americans, but also in greater danger.

At least 64 police officers have been shot and killed in 2016, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. This past year showed a disturbing trend of officers being intentionally targeted. The most significant attack took place July 7, when a gunman angry over the fatal police shootings of black men killed five police officers and wounded nine more at a Dallas protest. The rampage was the deadliest day for law enforcement since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The United States and the world were rocked in 2016 by Islamic terrorist acts, many of them on behalf of ISIS. A 29-year-old security guard pledged allegiance to ISIS before entering an Orlando gay nightclub on June 12 and killing 49 people and wounding 53 more. Two other domestic attacks – a set of September bombings in New York and New Jersey that injured 31, and a vehicle attack and mass stabbing Nov. 28 at Ohio State University that injured 11 – appear to have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology.

The U.K. votes to leave the European Union

Before Trump, there was Brexit.

In a move that shocked the European Union and the United Kingdom political establishment, the island nation’s voters narrowly approved a referendum June 23 to remove it from the 28-state political and economic bloc. The U.K. currently intends to formally request withdrawal by the end of March, which under treaty likely would mean a 2019 separation.

The majority of voters in England and Wales voted to

leave, while more voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland wanted to stay in the EU. A judgment by the U.K.’s high court is expected in January as to whether new Prime Minister Theresa May, who took over after David Cameron resigned after the Brexit vote, can make the withdrawal request without Parliament’s approval.

While most of Parliament’s members have said they will respect the referendum’s results, they could add caveats that would mean less of a clean break.

Fidel Castro dies

Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who led the country’s communist revolution and whose decision to allow Soviet missiles on Cuban soil almost plunged the world into nuclear war, died Nov. 25 at age 90.

Castro remained a thorn in the side of 10 U.S. presidents during a half century of rule since seizing power in 1959, most notably during the Kennedy administration, which tried to oust him in the unsuccessful Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. The Cuban Missile Crisis followed a year later.

Cuba faced a crippling U.S. trade embargo, exacerbated by the end of economic subsidies from the former Soviet Union.

Castro officially handed the presidency in 2008 to his brother, Raul, who now is 85 years old.

The nation’s chilly relationship with the U.S. thawed somewhat in 2014, with promises of restoring diplomatic relations.

Thousands of joyous Cuban exiles in Miami and neighboring towns took to the streets to celebrate upon hearing the news.

Leaked emails embarrass Democrats, raise questions of Russian influence

The release of hacked emails from top Democratic officials during the 2016 campaign not only hurt Hillary Clinton, but also raised concerns over potential foreign influence in

the election.

Almost 20,000 emails obtained through hacking the Democratic National Committee computer network were given to the website WikiLeaks, which posted them in July just before the party’s nominating convention.

Party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned under pressure – emails appeared to show a coordinated effort to help Clinton and hurt her Democratic rivals during the primaries. The emails contradicted claims by Democratic officials that Clinton’s rival for the nomination, Sen. Bernie Sanders, was being treated fairly by the party.

Politically embarrassing emails from Clinton campaign Chairman John Podesta were released by WikiLeaks in the weeks before the Nov. 8 election.

Earlier this month, the CIA told lawmakers that intelligence agencies had concluded that Russia may have been behind the hackings as an effort to ensure the election of Trump.

Protesters stop pipeline project, occupy wildlife refuge

Two very different groups of people occupied federal lands using different techniques for different reasons, yielding very different endings.

Members of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and supporters spent months camping out in North Dakota to protest and block completion of the proposed Dakota Access oil pipeline, which would skirt the reservation’s northern border.

Protesters allege that the pipeline threatens their drinking water and cultural sites.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced earlier this month that it would try to find an alternate route.

On Jan. 2, an armed group upset over federal ownership of western lands occupied the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon. The standoff lasted 40 days, and one of the group members was shot and killed by federal agents when several of them were arrested en route to a meeting.

While 12 of the members have pleaded guilty in court, a federal jury in late October acquitted seven of them of all federal charges.

Stock market hits record highs after a crazy year

The past year was an unpredictable roller-coaster ride for the stock market.

It started out with the worst opening month ever for the Dow Jones, which lost 5.5 percent of its value because of worries over plummeting oil prices and a slowdown in the Chinese economy.

Stocks took another tumble in June after U.K. voters decided to leave the European Union, startling investors who assumed based on polling that the Brexit effort would fail. While investors were sure that the Federal Reserve would raise interest rates in 2016, it did not happen until earlier this month.

Another unforeseen event did not hurt U.S. markets at all. While Dow futures plunged on the night of Nov. 8 as it appeared that Donald Trump was going to defy conventional wisdom and win the presidency, the stock market ended Nov. 9 on an upbeat note.

The Dow Jones is ending 2016 breaking records, and was poised as of last week to break the 20,000 mark.

Born March 14, 1926 in Streator, she was the daughter of James and Anna (Pollak) Moran. She married Justin M. Corrigan on October 8, 1949 at Blessed Virgin Mary Annunciation Church in Eagle Township. He preceded her in death on October 31, 2000.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathy (Mike) Condon of Sycamore; grandchildren, Patrick (Stephanie) Condon of Dekalb, Tim (Jennifer) Condon of Sycamore, Sean (Jillian) Condon of Rochelle and Kelli (Todd) Marshall of St. Charles; 10 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Kristine M. Corrigan; a sister, Frances Johnson; and brothers, James and Arthur Moran.

Born in Streator she was raised in the Kangley area. She attended Kangley schools and graduated from Streator High School Class of 1944. She moved to the Ransom area following her marriage. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Ransom for many years and the Altar and Rosary Society of her church.

During WW II she worked at the Seneca Shipyards. She was an active volunteer for many years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Streator.

SYCAMORE – Scott Baylor’s first experience with the “Star Wars” franchise was when he was about 9 years old and his father took him to see the 1980 film “Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” in theaters.

On the day he learned of the death of actress Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original films, he was going with his father to see the latest release, “Rogue One,” nearly 40 years later.

“I remember walking out of the theater from ‘The Empire Strikes Back,’ and I remember him looking at me and asking me, ‘Do you really think Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father?’” recalled Baylor, of Sycamore.

Fisher died Tuesday at age 60, four days after falling ill aboard an airline flight. Media reports said the actress had suffered a heart attack.

In addition to her iconic role as Princess Leia Organa in “Star Wars,” Fisher also turned her experiences with addiction and mental illness into best-selling books, a hit film and popular stage performances.

Steve Baylor, Scott Baylor’s father, said the way “Star Wars” seemed to create a new world out of nothing with

“I was shocked,” he said. “I know I shouldn’t be with the way 2016 has been going.”

Creighton said he was 2 years old when “Star Wars” first came out in 1977, but he has been a fan for as long as he can remember.

“I always thought [Princess Leia] was a strong character,” he said. “I love the entire cast. My favorite character was Han Solo, but I still love Princess Leia.”

Beverly McClain of St. Louis also saw “Rogue One” at the Sycamore State Theater on Tuesday while she was in town for the holidays.

“I stood in line for the first one and had never done that for a movie before,” she said. “I enjoyed [Fisher’s] character.”

Officers play Santa’s helpers on Christmas Police give gifts to kids displaced after incident

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The three children who had to leave their home early Christmas morning because of a domestic dispute were worried whether Santa Claus would find them.

The children, ages 7, 10 and 12, and their mother were referred to Safe Passage’s emergency shelter for the night.

But the DeKalb police officers who handled the call that night, and their colleagues who were working alongside them – 11 officers in all – took the initiative to make sure there was something waiting for them Christmas morning.

“We basically had a whole shift of officers taking it upon themselves to help out the kids,” DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said.

Police officers took up a collection and called the Walgreens in Sycamore, which was the only store they could find that was open at 2 a.m. Christmas morning. There, they bought about $200 worth of presents for the three children.

Store employee Rebecca Ginley, who was working that morning, said she was touched by the officers’ generosity and amazed by the effort they took in finding the right gifts.

Ginley said she was in tears after the officers explained the situation to her.

“Rebecca is a really valued employee that does a great job for the customers, which is great to find for an overnight shift,” Walgreens store manager Debbie Nottingham said. “This just makes you understand that being open 24-7 can make a difference.”

Officers then wrapped the gifts at the police station and delivered them to the shelter before the children woke up.

DeKalb police commander it’s not uncommon for officers to go out of their way to help. He recalled a time last year when an officer helped to buy a new dress for a DeKalb High School freshman whose dress was stolen the day of the homecoming dance.

The officer who bought the dress, Jon Jursich, also was one of the officers who helped this cause.

“Anytime we see something where we can make a difference, we do it,” Woodruff said. “We like to help whenever we can.”

“Hopefully, we brought some peace and happiness to this sad experience,” Mott said.

He said there were no arrests made in connection with the domestic incident.

Lowery said that all of the officers who contributed would be reviewed for commendations.

“They could’ve walked away from the call and still done their job, but their actions went above and beyond,” Lowery said. “I’m very proud of them for showing compassion and concern, and it truly is a reflection of those officers and how they do their job.”

Authorities ID 3 children found dead in Rockford fire

ROCKFORD – Authorities in Rockford have identified three children who were found dead in a Christmas Eve house fire.

Winnebago County Coroner William Hintz on Monday said 5-year-old Damion Kruger, 11-year-old Star Bonilla and 17-year-old Michael Bonilla died in the Saturday fire.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the preliminary cause of death for the three is thermal with smoke and soot inhalation.

Report: 144 school districts gave bonuses last year

Family seeks answers in Chicago man’s death

KENOSHA, Wis. – The family of a Chicago man who went missing in 2012 and whose remains were found in southeastern Wisconsin in April has traveled to Kenosha in hopes of finding out what happened. The remains of Hozia Jackson weren’t identified until earlier this month, WITI-TV reported. The cause of death is undetermined, and police said they don’t have any leads in the case.

ARBOR VITAE, Wis. – A 63-year-old Illinois man died in a snowmobile crash in northern Wisconsin.

The crash was reported about 8:30 p.m.

Monday on a trail near Arbor Vitae. Investigators said the man struck a tree and died at the scene. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Police continue to investigate.

SOCHI, Russia – Investigators recovered the flight-data recorder from a crashed Russian military plane Tuesday and began reviewing its contents to learn why the jet went down moments after takeoff, killing all 92 people aboard, including members of a famous choir.

The Tu-154 crashed into the Black Sea early Sunday two minutes after departing in good weather from the city of Sochi.

The plane was carrying members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, widely known as the Red Army Choir, to a New Year’s concert at a Russian military base in Syria.

Meanwhile, rescue workers raced to wrap up their efforts to recover bodies and wreckage ahead of predicted bad weather.

The work has involved 3,500 people, including about 200 navy divers flown to the site from all over Russia. Aided by drones and submersibles, teams have recovered 12 bodies and numerous body fragments about a mile away from the shore.

Navy to commission USS Gabrielle Giffords

MOBILE, Ala. – A naval program that has become a target for critics is preparing to commission the USS Gabrielle Giffords, named for the U.S. politician who survived an assassination attempt in 2011.

The USS Gabrielle Giffords, constructed by Austal USA in

Mobile, Alabama, has completed testing in the Gulf of Mexico and is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-2017. The company handed over the $475 million ship to the Navy on Friday.

Giffords was shot in the head during a mass shooting in Arizona in 2011 and helped christen the ship in 2015. It’s part of a hotly debated program that congressional critics slam as flawed and too expensive but that Navy leaders defend as a critical new step in naval warfighting.

More Americans retiring outside of the U.S.

Newly widowed, Kay McCowen quit her job, sold her house, applied for Social Security and retired to Mexico. It was a move she and her husband, Mel, had discussed before he passed away in 2012.

“I wanted to find a place where I could afford to live off my Social Security,” she said. “The weather here is so perfect, and it’s a beautiful place.”

She is among a growing number of Americans who are retiring outside the U.S. The number grew 17 percent between 2010 and 2015 and is expected to increase over the next 10 years as more baby boomers retire. Just fewer than 400,000 American retirees are living abroad, according to the Social Security Administration. The countries they have chosen most often: Canada, Japan, Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Seventy-five years after Japan’s surprise attack sent America marching into World War II, Abe and President Barack Obama peered down at the rusting wreckage of the USS Arizona, clearly visible in the tranquil, teal water. More than 1,000 U.S. war dead remain entombed in the submerged ship, and in a show of respect, Obama and Abe dropped purple petals into the water and stood in silence.

“As the prime minister of Japan, I offer my sincere and everlasting condolences to the souls of those who lost their lives here, as well as to the spirits of all the brave men and women whose lives were taken by a war that commenced in this very place,” Abe said later at nearby Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

That was the closest Abe would get to an apology for the attack. It was enough for Obama, who also declined to apologize seven months ago when he became America’s first sitting president to visit Hiroshima, where the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb in a bid to end the war. It was enough, too, for Alfred Rodrigues, a U.S. Navy veteran who survived the attack.

The 96-year-old said he had no hard feelings

and added, “War is war.”

“They were doing what they were supposed to do, and we were doing what we were supposed to do,” Rodrigues said before the visit.

Abe, who became Japan’s first leader to visit Pearl Harbor with a U.S. president, said the visit “brought utter silence to me.” His remarks capped a day that was carefully choreographed by the U.S. and Japan to show a strong and growing alliance between former foes.

They started with a formal meeting at another nearby military base, in what the White House said was likely Obama’s last meeting with a foreign leader before leaving office in January. It was a bookend of sorts for the president, who nearly eight years ago invited Abe’s predecessor to be the first leader he hosted at the White House.

Obama, speaking after he and Abe laid green-and-peach wreaths at the memorial, called the harbor a sacred place and said that “even the deepest wounds of war can give way to friendship and lasting peace.” It’s a notion Obama tried throughout his presidency to put into practice, as he reached out to former adversaries Iran, Myanmar and Cuba.

“As we lay a wreath or toss flowers into waters that still weep, we think of the more than 2,400 American patriots, fathers and husbands, wives and daughters, manning heaven’s rails for all eternity,” Obama said.

Then the two leaders greeted survivors in the crowd. They shook hands and hugged some of the men who fought in the Dec. 7, 1941, battle that President Franklin D. Roosevelt called a “date which will live in infamy.”

Nuclear boast may follow Obama’s plan There’s no good place to start a nuclear arms race – and Twitter is an especially bad venue.

So it’s unfortunate that President-elect Donald Trump last week tweeted his desire for the U.S. to “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability,” then followed up the next day by saying, “Let it be an arms race.”

It’s hard to know exactly what Trump means – such are the limitations of communication via 140 characters or off-the-air phone calls to morning-TV hosts – but it’s possible he is simply referring to the need to continue the U.S.’s nuclear modernization program. In the 2016 federal budget, President Barack Obama laid the groundwork for a $1 trillion overhaul of the nation’s nuclear arsenal: warheads, missiles, bombers, submarines, targeting systems and the Department of Energy’s huge research and development system.

The plan has some flaws. Not all three legs of the “nuclear triad” (missiles on subs, planes and buried in the ground) are in need of an upgrade, for example: Intercontinental ballistic missiles are part of a Cold War deterrence strategy based on mutually assured destruction. Meanwhile, the accuracy of submarine-based missiles vastly has improved in the past several decades. And a plan to create a new nuclear cruise missile that could be launched from a bomber and directed at a target up to 1,500 miles away may be too risky.

For the most part, however, the plan is well conceived and necessary, to deter both major powers such as Russia and China and hostile smaller nations intent on joining the nuclear club such as Iran.

It would leave the U.S. with 700 deployed ICBMs, subs and bombers capable of delivering nuclear warheads – the maximum allowed under the second Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia, which is set to go into force in 2018.

Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to Trump by saying that, if the U.S. started an arms race, Russia would respond. Yet he, too, already is embarking on a rebuilding of what were the Soviet Union’s nuclear forces.

One tweet does not official U.S. policy make – at least not yet. When Trump does begin to translate his statements about nuclear weapons into actual plans, he could do worse than staying the course that Obama has set.

Agreement on infrastructure There weren’t many points of agreement between the two contenders in the brutal 2016 presidential campaign, but the need to invest in infrastructure offered a rare moment of harmony.

That’s why we expect Congress to put forward a massive public works bill, an issue that should receive strong bipartisan support.

Since Election Day, the president-elect has renewed his commitment to this kind of investment, and his rhetorical focus has been on building roads, bridges and airports, a 21st-century reprise of the massive interstate highway system project started during the Eisenhower administration.

That kind of investment is important, but the new administration should not stop there.

It’s time for a real 21st-century infrastructure program, one that

focuses on bringing high-speed, broadband internet to rural areas.

Reliable internet service is as important to economic development today as the highway system was in the 1950s. Connecting rural areas to the world creates business opportunities in places that have lost traditional jobs.

More people move to areas that have high-speed internet capacity, and they often bring jobs with them.

Broadband investment also provides more opportunities to start new businesses, and not just ones in “tech” fields. Retail, hospitality, agriculture, medicine and a wide range of other enterprises rely on their ability to share information quickly and dependably.

A strong commitment to rural infrastructure would bring the economic recovery into

areas that have been left behind during the economic recovery that started in 2009.

Internet expansion has a proven impact on economic development. According to a study by the Information & Technology and Innovation Foundation, 250,000 jobs are created for every $5 billion in infrastructure development; with every percentage point increase in new broadband distribution, employment expands by 300,000 jobs.

A major infrastructure program that puts significant resources into rural broadband will do for 21st-century America what the highway program did for this nation in the 20th.

Legislators should keep pushing to let the whole country benefit from the economic opportunity that has been unleashed by the information revolution.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Mitchell’s big night carries DeKalb past Hampshire

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Early in the third quarter, DeKalb’s Michael Mitchell’s 3-pointer bounced off nearly every part of the rim before falling in.

It was that kind of night for the senior guard.

Mitchell drained six 3-pointers and the No. 5-seed Barbs eventually pulled away from Hampshire in a 61-40 victory in the first round of the 89th annual Chuck Dayton Classic on Tuesday night in DeKalb.

Mitchell scored a career-high 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting – including 6 for 9 from beyond the arc – and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Barbs (7-2) in the win.

“I started out 0 for 2, so I was thinking I had to step it up,” Mitchell said.

“It boosted my confidence (after making shots early in the game) and when we called timeout my teammates were like, ‘Look for Michael coming off screens.’ Fortunately, I have teammates like that to have trust in me.”

While the 25 points are a career-high, it’s the second time this season that Mitchell has connected on six 3-pointers. He did it in the 53-50 win over Neuqua Valley to open the season – including the game-winner just before the buzzer.

taking those shots and when he gets his feet set, he’s pretty darn good,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “I thought Mitchell played a great game tonight. I thought he played with a lot of confidence offensively and he basically carried us for three quarters.

That was huge.”

Against the Whip-Purs on Tuesday, DeKalb center Darvon Sisson nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench. He was the only other Barbs player in double figures.

Hampshire guard Frederick Powell scored a team-high 13 points – including three deep 3-pointers – and J.D. Shaw added 10 points.

The Barbs got some tough news when senior guard Cole Tucker left the game early in the third quarter with a shoulder injury, and Biancalana said he was unsure whether Tucker would be available when the Barbs take on either No. 4 seed West Chicago or Marmion Academy at 6:30 p.m. today.

“This will all come down to how hurt Cole Tucker is,” Biancalana said.

“If he has to miss a lot of time, other guys have to really help out.”

Hampshire controlled the game early, taking a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and building the advantage to 21-16 after a layup by William Dumoulin with 4:01 left in the second quarter.

Then the Barbs got hot. DeKalb went on an 11-0 run that including a pair of 3-pointers by Mitchell – his third and fourth of the quarter – a three by Michael Vilet and a jumper by Marcus Bobo to go ahead 27-21.

The Barbs struggled in the third quarter with Tucker out – turning the ball over eight times compared with just nine field goal attempts.

However, a tough defense allowed the Barbs to extend the lead heading into the fourth.

In the second half, DeKalb outscored Hampshire 34-17.

“I thought that we played pretty good defense,” Biancalana said.

“That’s always the great equalizer for us, is that we’re able to stop people and we did a better job of recognizing where their shooters were.”

RIDGEWOOD 71, HUNTLEY 50: Josh Carrasquillo was nearly perfect from the floor to help lead No. 2 seed Ridgewood to an easy victory over Huntley in the opener.

Carrasquillo went 8 for 9 from the field for a game-high 18 points and had six assists in the win. Dominic DeVivo had 17 points and five 3-pointers and Zachary Rzewnicki flirted with a triple-double, notching 14 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Ridgewood, which improved to 8-2 on the year.

Tommy Marcotte had a team-high 24 and had six rebounds for Mundelein in the loss, while James Willman grabbed 13 rebounds.

Winnebago improved to 6-1 on the season, while Mundelein fell to 2-7.

SCHURZ 66, BELVIDERE NORTH 58: After squandering a 15-point first half lead, No. 3 seed Schurz recovered with a strong fourth quarter to earn a win in the opener.

Belvidere North (1-10) had trailed by as much as 15 midway through the second quarter and took the lead with 4:41 left in the third, but Schurz (8-2) outscored the Blue Thunder 19-12 in the final period.

The Cogs erased an early Richmond-Burton lead to finally take a 4241 lead with four minutes remaining and didn’t allow a field goal in the final quarter.

“Something we told them after the game tonight is the only thing that matters is that everybody in the locker room believes we have a chance to win and they do,” Genoa-Kingston coach Corey Jenkins said.

The Cogs (7-5) will face Rochelle in the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

Against Richmond-Burton, Justin McNeal led the way with a team-high 16 points, Bailey Foley scored 10 and Zach Miller chipped in nine.

The Spartans will play in the seventh-place game against Harvest Christian at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

IC advances: Trevor Guerra had another big night offensively and the Timberwolves pulled away for a 61-40 win over Putnam County to advance to the semifinals of the Marseilles Holiday Tournament.

Guerra scored a game-high 21 points in the win for Indian Creek.

The Timberwolves will play either Marquette or Hartem in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mirotic’s inconsistencies off the bench, especially this season, have been very public. Coach Fred Hoiberg has called out Mirotic about his up-anddown performances, as well as VP of basketball operations John Paxson.

Paxson went as far as to go on a local radio show and even admit that Mirotic needed to get out of his own head and find some confidence.

When the Bulls drafted and stashed him over in the EuroLeague for a few seasons, the hope was he would devel-

op into a scoring threat, especially from the outside. What they have received is a guy that has seemingly lost his way from the outside, shooting just over 30 percent from beyond the 3-point line through his first 29 games this season, and a player who seems to be getting worse from out there.

Illini routed in Big Ten opener by Maryland The ASSOCIATED PRESS COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Melo Trimble scored 20 points and Jaylen Brantley added 13 as Maryland routed Illinois, 84-59, on Tuesday in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

It was the sixth victory in a row for the Terrapins (13-1), who have won their conference opener in all three seasons since joining the Big Ten. Malcolm Hill had 21 points for the Illini (10-4), who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.

Maryland played without two of its top post players. Junior Michal Cekovsky rested a left ankle injury, and senior Damonte Dodd missed his fifth consecutive game with a sprained left knee ligament.

Their absences mattered little against the Illini, who never led and

were outscored, 48-24, in the paint.

It also provided an opportunity for Maryland graduate transfer L.G. Gill, who matched a season-high with seven rebounds.

After both teams struggled with turnovers in the early moments, Maryland uncorked a 10-0 run to seize a 15-4 lead. The Terps’ lead would never shrink below nine points as the Illini failed to get traction on offense. Maryland held a 39-23 edge at the break.

The Terps were 55.9 percent from the field while Illinois, which dropped its Big Ten opener for the fourth time in five years, shot 35.6.

It was the fifth consecutive road loss for the Illini dating to last season, and that skid could grow in the coming weeks as the Illini visits No. 16 Indiana, 15th-ranked Purdue and Michigan.

So do you trust him now?

It’s a simple question concerning Bulls stretch-four Nikola Mirotic, and one that has been asked frequently about the third-year player.

Yet, a question that seems to pop up a handful of times each season when it comes to Mirotic.

But fresh off a 20-point performance in the Monday win over Indiana – coincidentally Mirotic’s fifth-straight double-digit scoring game – there it was once again.

Has Mirotic done enough where Bulls fans can embrace him as a core player moving forward?

“Of course I need to be more consistent,’’ Mirotic said when asked about where he was with his game these days.

“That’s what I’m trying to do. I think it’s been a few games where it’s been better. I’m shooting better, I’m trying to rebound the ball, trying to pass. Playing simple basketball. That’s what I’m doing. That’s my game. I know it’s cost me a little bit to find that way, but I’m not happy with this right now. I need to keep building from this point.

“I know there are a lot of things I can improve. I know my weaknesses, I know my strengths, so I need to just keep working hard.’’

As is his front office.

Add on top very shaky defense, and Hoiberg had no choice but to bench him for two-straight games last week, giving Mirotic his first two career DNP [Did Not Play] Coach’s Decision.

Not exactly a high point for the 25-year-old.

“I don’t know,’’ Mirotic said, when asked if the benching could have been a positive for him. “I don’t want to go back.

I just want to move forward. I know I can be much better. I need to improve, I need to keep working hard. I need to be like I’ve always been.

“Let the guys know they can trust in me. The players and the coach. I accepted my role, what they wanted me to do.

I’ve been accepting of it all year, all this time, but at the end of the day I’m happy that we [beat Indiana].’’

Since the benching, Mirotic has scored 13 points in a win over Detroit, followed by 11, 11, 11, and then the 20 he put on Indiana.

“The difference is just trying to be the same guy, trying to be positive,’’ Mirotic said.

But enough to yet again trust him moving forward?

That’s a selling point that Mirotic continues to fail in.

worthy Festive take on risotto creates New Year’s Eve dish

Even though risotto is a simple rice dish, I associate it with special occasions.

A northern Italian rice dish cooked in broth to a creamy consistency, risotto most often is served as a first course. But in the U.S., we serve it as a side or a main course.

It most always includes butter, onions and wine.

I have made white wine risotto with spring peas and crab meat and red wine risotto with caramelized shallots and mushrooms. But I never thought about making champagne risotto until my friend and fellow chef, Bob Blumer mentioned it to me.

I immediately knew Champagne risotto would have to become my New Year’s Eve staple – it’s comforting on a cold night and easy to prepare while talking and drinking with friends. And it’s the perfect choice for an at-home New Year’s Eve celebration.

Bob makes his risotto with asparagus, which is out of season right now. I opted to make mine with one of my favorite ingredients, mushrooms – any kind of mushrooms work, or a mixture of wild mushrooms.

The combination of garlic, shallots, butter, champagne, Parmesan and thyme is so rich this recipe is excellent with button mushrooms and only gets better with more interesting mushrooms.

My favorite two mushrooms are meaty morels and chanterelles. And since it is New Year’s Eve,

why not spurge with champagne and chanterelles?

The key to risotto is setting up two pots, one for the chicken stock and the other for making the risotto itself.

Keep the chicken stock warm so it is absorbed quicker and doesn’t “shock” the risotto as you stir it in, little by little.

Champagne Risotto

Servings: 2 dinner portions or 4 side dishes Start to finish: 45 minutes 2 large shallots, chopped (about 1/3 cup) 2 large cloves of garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons butter, divided 4 ounces mixed chopped mushrooms (A generous cup of cooked mushrooms) 1 cup Champagne 32 ounces unsalted chicken stock 6 sprigs of fresh thyme, divided 1 generous cup Arborio rice 1 generous cup Parmesan cheese, grated In a heavy-bottomed medium-size (about 6 quarts) pot over medium-high heat, add olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter.

Immediately add shallot and garlic and stir for 3-4 minutes, or until the shallot is translucent and beginning to brown around the edges.

Add rice to the shallots and garlic and stir vigorously for about 30 seconds until all of the rice grains are coated in oil. Let

rice toast in the pan for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently.

In a medium sauté pan, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and let melt. Season butter with salt and add mushrooms. Let cook down until lightly sautéed and set aside.

In a second pot (about 4 quarts), warm chicken stock and 1/2 cup of champagne over medium-low heat. Add about 4 whole sprigs of thyme to infuse the stock.

Add champagne to the rice mixture and reduce heat to medium. Add in the sautéed mushrooms. Stir for 2 to 3 minutes, until most of the liquid is absorbed.

Use a ladle to add 1/2 cup of the hot chicken stock to the rice. Stir frequently. Each time the stock is almost fully absorbed, add another 1/2 cup. Continue stirring and adding stock until rice is creamy yet still a little firm to the bite. (It may not be necessary to use all of the stock.)

The total cooking time, once the rice has been added, should not be more than about 25 minutes. To keep the rice slightly creamy, don’t wait until the last ladle full of stock is totally absorbed before pulling it off the heat and serving.

Remove from the heat. Stir in the reserved thyme (leaves only) and the Parmesan cheese. Continue stirring until the cheese is completely melted. Season with a touch of white pepper and salt if desired. You shouldn’t need to use much salt, if any.

Serve in flat bowls with a sprig of thyme.

Vietnam inspires healthy post-holiday chicken salad

Call it a resolution or just a last-minute attempt to button your pants, but come January, many of us strive to put the cookies behind us and make thoughtful food choices.

But one sure-fire way to find yourself off track on a healthier eating plan is to fill your refrigerator with bland and boring foods after a month of decadent party snacks.

Fresh fruits and vegetables and lean meats and proteins are important foundations for a well-balanced diet, but, on their own, they’re not always a thrilling culinary experience.

If you need some inspiration to take your healthy post-holiday dinners from fine to fabulous, look no further than our neighbors on the other side of the globe.

Vietnamese cuisine is regarded as one of the healthiest in the world, for its lean meats and proteins, fresh vegetables and limited use of dairy.

Vinegars, spicy chilies, and fragrant and flavorful herbs are characteristic of familiar Vietnamese dishes, like the banh mi sandwich and cold rice noodle bowls. Layered together, they elevate minimal ingredients like boiled chicken and raw carrots to create exciting recipes that can help you out of that boring salad slump.

This recipe for Hue Chicken Salad is the perfect dish to ease you into your meal-plan reboot. Though it starts with a base of plain boiled or steamed chicken (don’t stop reading), it’s packed with bright and fresh flavors, and every bite is a new experience.

There may be some ingredients in this recipe you haven’t used before, so take this opportunity to get to know them. Or, you can always replace them with more familiar ingredients.

Rau ram is a Vietnamese herb that can easily be substituted with cilantro, and sambal is a spicy chili sauce that can be replaced by Sriracha or omitted entirely if spicy isn’t your thing (in that case, don’t add those Thai bird chilies either).

If you aren’t familiar with fish sauce, allow us to make this exciting introduction. Fish sauce is a very common ingredient in southeast Asian cuisines made by extracting the liquid from salted fermented fish.

Despite its strong aroma, the flavor of fish sauce almost disappears in a dish, becoming more of a seasoning than a distinct flavor. CIA Chef Michael Pardus calls it “the duct tape of the kitchen” for its ability to repair any bland recipe.

This recipe recommends serving the chicken salad with rice for dinner,

but it’s also great used as a topper for salad greens, served with riced cauliflower or scooped over toasted wholegrain bread. It is also the perfect make-ahead recipe, since its flavors will deepen in the refrigerator, and leftovers will make for a lunch you really can look forward to.

Just be prepared for the longing looks from your co-workers with their boring salads.

Hue Chicken Salad Start to finish: 20 minutes

Servings: 4

You can use either poached or roasted chicken to make this salad. If you can’t find rau ram, substitute an equal quantity of additional cilantro and mint. Vietnamese sambal is a fiery hot chili paste. You can substitute a good hot sauce if it cannot be found.

1/2 medium onion, sliced thin 1½ pounds shredded cooked chicken meat 1/4 cup rau ram leaves, torn 1/4 cup mint leaves, torn 1/4 cup minced cilantro leaves and stems

1 Thai bird chili, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons lime juice 1 tablespoon peanut oil 1 tablespoon fish sauce 1 tablespoon Vietnamese sambal 2 teaspoons sugar, or as needed Salt, as needed Freshly ground black pepper, as needed 4 Boston lettuce leaves 2 cups steamed jasmine rice 1 red Fresno chili, sliced paper thin 1/2 cup Crispy Shallots, (optional), recipe follows Combine the onion slices with enough cold water to cover, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours.

Combine the chicken, rau ram, mint, cilantro, and Thai bird chili slices in a large bowl. Drain the onion slices and add them to the chicken. Add the lime juice, peanut oil, fish sauce, and sambal to the salad and toss gently until combined. Season to taste with sugar, salt, and pepper.

Arrange the Boston lettuce on chilled plates. Top with the salad and serve with steamed rice and the Fresno chili. Garnish with crispy shallots if desired.

Crispy Shallots Select a large, firm shallot with smooth skin. Use a sharp paring knife to trim away the ends and pull off the skin. Cut the shallot into thin slices and separate them into rings. Plan on about 1/2 cup of sliced shallots to make enough garnish for 4 servings. That works out to about 1 large shallot.

Pour an inch of oil (canola, peanut or olive oils are all suitable) into a small, heavy-gauge saucepan. When it reaches 350 degrees F, add the shallots and fry, stirring them occasionally, until they have a rich, sweet aroma and a good brown color, usually about 5 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to lift the fried shallots from the oil. Transfer them to a plate or bowl lined with paper towels. You can hold them at room temperature for up to one hour.

Again, this appears to be related to fish oil’s potential protective effect against abnormal heart rhythms after a heart attack.

Fish oil hasn’t been shown to decrease the chance of a stroke. Nor has it been shown to decrease the risk or incidence of cancer. In fact, some studies have shown a correlation between fish oil and prostate cancer, but other studies have failed to support that connection.

In summary, fish oil does appear to decrease the chance of sudden cardiac death, but you don’t need to take capsules to see this benefit. Eating fish twice a week can do that.

Before you turn to eating tuna fish from a can, keep in mind tuna has much less omega-3 fatty acids than Atlantic salmon, mackerel or herring. If you don’t care for fish, taking 1 gram of a fish oil supplement twice a week likely will yield a benefit. If you’ve had a heart attack, consider taking 1 gram of fish oil a day.

Dear Doctor: I have been taking fish oil capsules daily the past five years. Is there any benefit in doing this?

Dear Reader: The short answer is “maybe.” Scientists have shown societies with higher fish intake have lower rates of heart disease. The belief is this benefit comes from fish oil. Fish oil contains substances known as long-chain fatty acids (omega-3 fatty acids), specifically DHA, DPA and EPA, with many health benefits.

These fatty acids help lower blood triglyceride levels; lower blood pressure (by 1.5 to 4 points); and have an ability to help the heart relax so blood flows more easily into its chambers. Furthermore, the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil also have been linked to a slightly slower heart rate and to a decrease in inflammation.

Small studies have shown fish oil might be linked to a slight reduction in the formation of plaque in the arteries that supply the heart, but evidence of its ability to reduce the rates of heart attack hasn’t been as robust or as statistically significant.

One fish oil finding that was indeed statistically significant was from a large study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2006.

That study linked fish oil intake of 250 milligrams per day to a 36 percent reduction in rates of sudden cardiac death.

That amount – 250 mg of fish oil – equals one to two servings of fish per week.

One other property fish oil might have is an ability to reduce electrical excitability of the heart. That reduced excitability may decrease the heart’s chances of going into an abnormal rhythm, which can lead to death. Furthermore, among people who have had a heart attack, 1 gram of fish oil per day has been linked to a significant
