Firewood website helps avoid POLL YESTERDAY’S winter trouble by the truckload RESULTS

news@daily-chronicle.com You see the ads in the newspaper, along roadsides and just about everywhere else this time of year: “Firewood for sale.”

Knowing where your firewood comes from can keep you from making some costly mistakes, according to Duane Friend, a University of Illinois Extension Educator in environmental and energy stewardship.

Friend is the co-author of University of Illinois Extension’s new “Firewood in Illinois” website, web.extension.illinois.edu/ firewood.

Friend offers a few tips for people in the market for firewood: • Ask the seller where the wood came from and what kind of wood it is. Oak, hickory and ash are some of the best firewood.

All woods produce the same amount of heat per pound of weight, but some woods are denser than others. The denser woods provide more heat by volume.

• Find out how long the wood has been seasoned (allowed to dry). Firewood should be seasoned for six to nine months before burning to remove moisture that sacrifices energy and produces smoke. Small cracks in the ends of the wood pieces are a sign that the wood has been seasoned.

• Be sure the length of the wood pieces will fit your fireplace or stove. Check the diameter of the logs. Splitting larger-diameter pieces may be necessary, and many homeowners do not have the tools they would need to split larger pieces of wood.

• When storing firewood, keep the pile covered and off the ground, and avoid direct contact with buildings. Friend noted that it is easier to start a fire with some types of wood than others, and some woods produce more sparks than others. For example,

Osage orange wood creates many sparks as it burns, so it may not be the best choice for use in a home fireplace.

The website includes a chart that shows which woods ignite more readily and which ones tend to produce a lot of sparks.

Dave Shiley, a food systems and small farms educator with U of I Extension, helped co-author the firewood website. “It is not always easy for people to tell how much wood they are actually buying or selling,” Shiley said.

Most firewood is sold by the cord, but Shiley said few people know exactly what that means. A standard cord contains 128 cubic feet of wood, but buyers might be getting closer to 80 to 90 cubic feet because of the space between pieces.

“Both buyers and sellers sometimes use the words ‘rick’ or ‘facecord’ interchangeably with ‘cord.’ Sometimes we find that people who buy a rick or a facecord don’t actually get a full cord of wood.”

Some buyers – and even some sellers – find it difficult to visualize how much wood is in a cord. Shiley said the website includes information that firewood sellers will find useful, too.

A standard-size pickup truck with wood randomly thrown into the top of the bed will equal about one-third of a cord, Shiley said.

If the wood is neatly stacked, the amount of wood will be closer to half of a cord. Buyers can determine the volume by multiplying the wood pile’s length by width by height.

“But that only gives you an accurate measure if the wood is neatly stacked without a lot of excess space between pieces,” Shiley said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean people should avoid buying a truckload of locally sourced wood that isn’t neatly stacked.

They just need to understand what they’re buying.”

D-428 parents seek help from committee to give their children a bilingual education

news@daily-chronilce.com Isabell Escamilla said she has the desire to participate in a community connected by her two children and 6,200 others, but what holds her back are the words she can’t say.

Escamilla is one of more than 200 Spanish-speaking parents who have gathered to seek the guidance of DeKalb School District 428 principals, teachers and organizers to better understand their communities and the resources they provide.

The group, Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee, meets once a month to hold workshops on topics members are concerned about.

“Throughout the four years that I worked for the district, one of the greatest things that I realized was that our Hispanic and our bilingual communities … really did care,” said organizer Val Hernandez, who watched the number of bilingual students grow from 23 percent to 30 percent while she worked at District 428. “They just found themselves in a situation where they knew the language was the greatest barrier for them. Therefore, it was scary to navigate the school system.”

The Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee is partly funded by Language Instruction Programs for Limited English Proficient Students, a Federal Title III grant meant to supplement state and local bilingual education programs for students. Meals provided during workshops are donated by local restaurants.

Technology was the topic of concern Thursday at the group’s meeting spot in the Haish Memorial Library, Zimmerman Room. Parents were taught how to create Gmail accounts and access educational material for their children, who were each given Chromebooks to use for the school year as a part of District 428’s One to One program.

A broader goal the group fulfills is to give members a sense of empowerment, Hernandez said, by giving them the tools to reach out to teachers and each other.

“Our goal is for it to be strictly parent-driven with support from the school district,” Hernandez said. “So instead of the teachers planning these events, the parents would – and [they] would … feel more comfortable integrating other parents.”

Escamilla said the largest obstacle she faces is the lack of personnel within the district who can break through the language barrier.

“She would really, really love to see more involvement as far as teachers go,” Hernandez said, translating for Escamilla. “Back when her son was in first grade, she didn’t really feel that there was enough out there, and she really loved the fact that there are teachers out there that are reaching out to create a group like this to help all the bilingual families and all the Hispanic families so that language won’t be barrier anymore.”

Impasse could have lasting effect

Although funding for the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee comes from a federal grant, the state programs it supplements have taken a hit from the budget impasse.

The final option up for consideration is to increase the levy using a 0.7 percent tax cap factor, which would

increase the average homeowner’s property tax bill by an estimated $3.62. This would reduce funds for general operations by about $40,400.

The city has maintained the amount of property tax dollars available for general operations since 2011 in an attempt to stabilize property taxes for home and business owners, according to the proposal.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. today in the Council Chambers of the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St.

Family of slain man questions girlfriend’s self-defense claim

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A DeKalb woman accused of strangling her boyfriend in the apartment they shared had recently met the man’s family in Chicago and discussed marriage, his family said.

Kela M. Moss, 26, of 419 S. First St., DeKalb, was charged Nov. 14 with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend, 25-year-old Brendon Brown, who lived with her in the apartment.

Brown’s family members said his death came as a shock, as did news about his arrest for domestic battery.

Even more surprising for the family was Moss’s claim that she acted in self-defense.

However, one person who saw a domestic violence incident involving Brown and Moss on a city street in broad daylight in October said that he thought the justice system should have done more to keep Brown away.

“They were living as a happy couple,” said Sharon Smith, Brown’s mother. “It’s unbelievable to us.”

Brown and Moss had visited his family in Chicago on Nov. 2, said Brown’s 27-year-old sister, Shavon Brown. The couple had been dating for more than a year, according to police reports.

Shavon Brown said Moss appeared fine during the visit. Moss made a big deal about having never met Brown’s family during the visit.

“She wasn’t scared or nothing,” Shavon Brown said of the visit. “He told us he loved her.”

Smith said that when Moss and Brown argued, Brown would go to Chicago to stay with family. Smith said Moss would always come to pick him up.

Slavenas also said domestic violence victims often protect their attackers.

“Abusers often warn their victims something bad will happen if police are called or [if] friends and family are told what is happening,” Slavenas said.

“Also, victims may feel sorry for their abuser, feel like they are to blame for the abuse or don’t want their abuser to have a criminal record.”

Victims who have called police in the past might feel as though there’s no good that can come of having their attacker arrested, and that it might only make things worse.

“Domestic violence is an incredibly complex issue that really requires the assistance of professionals to fully address and understand,” Slavenas said.

“We hope that anyone reading this who may feel unsafe will have the strength and courage to reach out for our free and confidential services.”

Moss walked into the DeKalb Police Department at 12:22 a.m. Nov. 14 and told an officer that there had been an incident Nov. 13 and that there was a body inside her apartment, police have said.

Moss gave permission for officers to go inside her apartment, where they found Brown dead inside. An autopsy showed he had been strangled, police said.

Moss was initially held on $5 million bond. On Thursday, Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set bond at $750,000 after Moss’s attorney, Robert Nolan, filed a bond reduction motion.

Moss remained at the DeKalb County Jail as of Friday afternoon and is next due in court Nov. 29.

With cool fall weather upon us, our thoughts turn to closing up the house tight for the winter.

Most of us do a fall cleaning to collect the last of that summer pollen and dust, check the batteries in the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and make sure windows and doors are sealed tight. With these tasks complete, we can breathe easy for the winter.

Or can we?

Radon, the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers, could also be trapped in your home, according to Jay Solomon, Energy and Environmental Stewardship Educator with University of Illinois Extension.

The only way to know if your home has elevated radon levels is to test it.

Once you know you have an issue, installation of a mitigation system is usually fairly straightforward and not cost prohibitive.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer has the highest mortality rates among cancers. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

An estimated 1,160 people develop radon-related lung cancer each year in Illinois, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Prolonged exposure to elevated indoor concentrations of radon gas in our homes is a leading cause. Elevated radon concentrations have been found in homes in every county in the state. Professional radon measurers have found over 41 percent of Illinois homes tested at or above the recommended action level of 4 picocuries per liter of air.

Radon is a soil gas formed by the breakdown of naturally occurring uranium in the soil. The colorless, odorless, radioactive gas finds its way into homes through cracks and openings in floors and subsurface walls. While basements are frequently associated with elevated radon levels, crawl-spaces and slab-on-grade homes can also have high levels because of the same upward movement of radon through and out of the soil.

The only way to know if you have an elevated radon concentration in your home is to test for it.

Homeowner test kits are available at most hardware and home improvement stores, other major retailers, and many county health departments.

Most of these kits are for short term evaluation, with exposure (test duration) times of two to seven days.

Testing for radon is as easy as following a few simple instructions included with the test kit you purchase.

CHICAGO – The indictment of a 35-year-old disgraced former Republican congressman jolted residents of his central Illinois district, shaken by prosecutors’ claims that Aaron Schock illegally dipped into campaign and government coffers to subsidize a lavish lifestyle, including his Capitol Hill office done up in the style of “Downton Abbey.”

Perhaps more stunning was an allegation found on page 34 of the charging document: Schock’s apparent willingness to pocket thousands of constituents’ dollars by arranging annual Washington tours combined with meetand-greets.

“I know that some people feel very hurt, angered and betrayed,” said Quincy insurance agent Jack Freiburg, who attended such an event in 2014.

State political observers said the alleged scheme stands out – even with Illinois’ long-established reputation for corruption, including a former governor’s attempt to sell President Barack Obama’s U.S. Senate seat. House rules require excess fees from such visits be

Judge: No bail for 2 teens in congressman’s grandson’s death

CHICAGO – Bail was denied Sunday afternoon for two teenagers charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of an Illinois congressman’s grandson after an argument over a pair of basketball shoes.

The 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl appeared before Cook County Judge James Brown wearing juvenile detention center sweatshirts, their heads bowed, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Brown called the killing of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis’ grandson a “total callous disregard for human life.”

Police said the two were arrested after they were identified as suspects in Friday’s shooting death of 15-year-old Javon Wilson.

“I feel a great deal of empathy, especially for the families of the two individuals who are involved,” Davis said. “I’m sure that’s not the way they were hoping to go into their Thanksgiving week.”

Davis said it’s unfortunate the teens “would have access to a gun that could

lead to that kind of mayhem” and that he will “continue to work with those who are trying to get guns out of circulation.”

He also says more funding is needed for education and after-school programs.

O’Hare workers who plan to strike will announce date Monday

CHICAGO – O’Hare International Airport workers who voted to strike soon will announce when they plan to take action.

Service Employees International Union Local 1 officials said they will announce the date of their strike at 10 a.m. Monday at the airport.

About 500 workers committed to a strike after a vote Thursday. The workers involved have been trying to organize with the union’s help. They work mainly for private contractors at the airport.

The workers are seeking union rights and a $15 an hour wage. They include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants.

SEIU Local 1 President Tom Balanoff said they don’t expect to shut down the airport but will create a disruption. The strike comes during the busy Thanksgiving holiday travel week.

July 2014 included bus rides to the National Zoo and a reception at the Japanese ambassador’s residence. Freiburg paid a $785 “Fly-in Conference Fee” to Schock’s office – meant to cover meals, transportation and other hosting costs – on top of $2,000 to $3,000 for a plane ticket, hotel room and other expenses.

Schock, the once-rising GOP star and prodigious party fundraiser, secretly kept at least $11,000 from that event, the indictment said.

Freiburg recalled that many on the trip were well-off but others weren’t, including several recent college graduates. “Some sacrificed financially to go,” the 63-year-old said.

Prosecutors said that in 2011, Schock set up a Florida bank account under the name of a factious company, “Global Travel International,” and instructed staff to deposit that year’s fly-fee money into it. He allegedly kept at least $4,482 from the 2011 fly-in, which happened in the same month he appeared on the cover of Men’s Health, his shirt unbuttoned to show off his six-pack abs. Landing the magazine cover – with the blurb “Rep. Aaron Schock is willing to give you the shirt off his back” – drew mockery but boosted Schock’s profile nationally.

Rockford to consider financial incentives for proposed plant

ROCKFORD – The city of Rockford may offer financial incentives to a company that hopes to hire 75 new workers to staff a plant in a rehabbed industrial building.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the city has proposed offering $150,000 in grant funding to Delicate Plastics. The company wants to rehab an industrial building in a low income neighborhood.

The proposal would require the company to hire some employees who have criminal records or may lack previous work experience.

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – Mitt Romney is a key contender to become the nation’s next secretary of state and retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis was an “impressive” prospect for defense secretary, President-elect Donald Trump and his No. 2, Mike Pence, said Sunday.

“Gov. Romney is under active and serious consideration to serve as secretary of state of the United States,” said Pence, the vice president-elect who is leading the search for Trump’s cabinet members, in an interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

On Sunday, the billionaire interrupted his tweeted criticisms of “Saturday Night Live,” the hit musical “Hamilton,” and Democrats to write that, “General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis, who is being considered for secretary of defense, was very impressive yesterday. A true General’s General!”

The comments were indications that Trump is looking outside his immediate circle as he works toward rounding out his foreign policy and national security teams. On Friday, he named a loyalist, retired Gen. Michael Flynn, as his national security adviser. Trump told reporters Sunday that one of his most loyal and public allies, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, also was a prospect for secretary of state “and other things.” Giuliani at one point had been considered for attorney general, but Trump gave that job to Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2012 GOP presidential contender, and

Trump exchanged bitter insults during the campaign, and Mattis has not been considered a Trump confidante. The appointment of more establishment figures could offer some reassurance to lawmakers and others concerned about Trump’s hard-line positions on immigration and national security and his lack of foreign policy experience.

But even as Trump and his team discussed pressing issues facing the country and how to staff the incoming administration, the president-elect’s Twitter feed suggested other issues too were on his mind.

His targets Sunday included retiring Democratic Leader Harry Reid. Trump tweeted that incoming Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer, another media-savvy New Yorker, was “far smarter” than Reid and “has the ability to get things done.”

Trump also complained that “Saturday Night Live,” which thrives on making fun of politicians, is “biased” and not funny. The night before, actor Alec Baldwin portrayed Trump as Googling, “What is ISIS?” Trump also insisted again that the cast and producers of “Hamilton” should apologize after the lead actor addressed Pence from the stage Friday night, telling the vice president-elect that “diverse America” was “alarmed and anxious” about the incoming administration.

Shining a spotlight on Thanksgiving The nation is a mere three days away from Thanksgiving, a holiday that increasingly is under siege, despite its prominence in the history and mythology of this country.

This has less to do with how the holiday story of Pilgrims and Native Americans is perceived. Rather, we are thinking about “Christmas creep.”

Christmas creep is defined as the tendency for advertising and decorations associated with the Dec. 25 holiday to appear earlier and earlier. Or as Wikipedia puts it, Christmas creep “is a merchandising phenomenon in which merchants and retailers exploit the commercialized status of Christmas by introducing Christmas-themed merchandise or decorations before the traditional start of the holiday shopping season, which in the United States is on the day after Thanksgiving.”

It’s a phenomenon that has been building. Most of the time, Halloween has helped serve as a roadblock when it comes to Christmas creep. But the public is seeing Christmas creep in stores, even before the jacko-lanterns, ghosts and black cats come down.

And perhaps it’s worse on TV, where packages are seen with red ribbon or holly-jolly people wearing sweaters before there’s even a hint of frost in the air or a brightly colored leaf dropping from the tree.

We recognize that railing could make us sound a little like Ebenezer Scrooge. And there are other holidays and seasonal events that push the boundaries as well. School advertisements seem to be popping up just a couple of weeks after students were released for summer vacation. But do we have to trample over Thanksgiving to get consumers ramped up for the holiday season?

We don’t think so.

And we’re not alone here. “Six out of 10 Americans (63 percent) are annoyed or very annoyed when holiday items appear in the store before Halloween,” according to RichRelevance’s third-annual Holiday Shopping Survey. But this number is dropping. In 2014, 71 percent of those responding felt this way.

The same survey also found that more people had softened their stances on stores being open on Thanksgiving. In 2014, 65 percent of Americans surveyed were annoyed or very annoyed about shopping on the holiday while this year 55 percent remained opposed to the idea.

Maybe there’s no pushing back against Christmas creep. The National Retail Federation said more than 40 percent of Americans begin their holiday shopping before Halloween. But they can do so without having the baubles and trappings of the holiday announcing that Christmas is coming.

Christmas and the holiday season will be here before you know it. But let’s allow Thanksgiving to bask a little in the spotlight before we turn the page.

For Trump voters, there is no left or right

Ethics and Public Policy Center senior fellow Donald Trump has won what might be the greatest “change election” in decades.

Republicans leaders are only now waking up to the fact that the change Trump’s voters want will end up changing the GOP, too.

Trump’s voters were not voting for less government. Instead, they believe the promise of American life has been taken from them by elites of both parties who neither know nor care what they are doing to their fellow citizens.

Trump stepped into this massive credibility gap with the message that he was different. In his talks, tweets and rallies, he identified the problems these people were facing: stagnating wages, shrinking numbers of good jobs, a political and media culture that treated them as though they were aliens in their own country.

For years, they had been longing for someone of Trump’s stature to say to them: “I hear you, and I will make things right.”

These voters backed Trump because they want their heritage back.

This is not, as has been charged, a racially tinged impulse. Millions of Trump’s supporters voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.

Rather, it is the heritage that all Americans are of equal worth, that

common values and common activities are worthy of respect and reward and confer dignity. Trump said he would “make America great again,” but he could have run on a different, more intellectual slogan: “Make American citizenship count again.”

This citizenship agenda is less interested in shrinking government than in making it work for average Americans. Trump’s signature issues – immigration, trade, law and order, fighting terrorism – all involve the federal government doing more and doing it better.

This push for federal action will pose serious challenges to the reigning GOP orthodoxy. However, if the first 100 days of a Trump presidency involve nothing more than tax cuts, deregulation and other traditional Republican ideas, the voters who wanted something different will wonder whether they were simply marks in a skillful con.

Many of Trump voters’ priorities can be addressed in ways consistent with Republican inclinations. Immigration can be reduced but not eliminated; trade deals can proceed if they ensure that benefits flow to average Americans, not just those in finance or exporting industries.

Tax reform, which means raising taxes on millions of honest Americans, can make way for tax cuts, and those cuts can be structured so that

large proportional gains go to those making less than the median income.

Other initiatives might require more direct government action.

Stagnating wages are not going away overnight.

Why not create a generous wage subsidy in place of a minimum wage increase? Why not pass a New Homestead Act that gives incentives to Americans in low-growth areas to move to places with greater opportunity? Why not withhold federal criminal-justice funding from police departments with a pattern of civil rights violations, and increase funding for departments that cut crime and eradicate police misbehavior?

This style of governance is not just what Americans want: It also fits with the Reaganite philosophy Republicans purport to admire. In his famous speech endorsing Barry Goldwater, Reagan told Americans: “There is no such thing as left or right. There is only up or down.” Trump voters believe this wholeheartedly. They want government to move up and move beyond the sterile ideological battles of left or right.

There’s a reason Trump got the votes of the descendants of the Reagan Democrats: He was communicating the Reagan message that Americans of all stripes deserved a hand up from their government.

Many people are not aware that before this plant was made illegal in 1937, it was one of the most widely prescribed medicines in our country, yet the FDA continues to maintain its status as a

Now that 29 states and a number of countries have legalized medical cannabis, it is time for the FDA to change the status of cannabis and recognize it as a medicine. Doing so would allow health insurers to pay for the cost of this medicine, something that currently forces many patients to make hard choices between accessing medicine and paying other bills.

It is time to both expand and make permanent the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program, as well as having the fed-

Reagan didn’t just support free trade; he subtly encouraged Japan to enact “voluntary” export limits, which forced Japanese firms wanting to sell more cars in the United States to build American factories employing American workers.

The Gipper’s tax cuts always included generous exemptions or credits geared toward removing millions of low-income workers from the rolls entirely. Reagan’s two terms are replete with examples of an energetic, active government that was nonetheless limited in its scope and aspirations.

Trump’s victory has given the Republican Party the opportunity of a generation. It can either hear the demands of whom, echoing Reagan and conservative Australian statesman Sir Robert Menzies, Trump calls “the forgotten people” or not. If it does, it will realign the GOP with its Reaganite heritage and work to affirm what Reagan called “the purpose and worth to each and every life.” If the GOP can change back to what it once was, it can enact the change Trump’s voters want and change America for the better.

NEW YORK – Almost every morning since their father’s stunning victory on Election Day, three of Donald Trump’s grown children walk through the Trump Tower lobby and board an elevator. But are Don Jr., Ivanka and Eric going to the campaign office on the 5th floor? Their business offices on the 25th floor? The president-elect’s penthouse on the 56th floor?

That uncertainty highlights the multiple roles the children play for their father. For the past year, the lines were constantly blurred between political campaign and business empire, raising questions about a possible conflict of interest between Trump’s White House and his sprawling business interests.

The children are poised to wield incredible influence over their father, even if they don’t follow him to Washington. Trump said consistently during the campaign that if he won, those children would stay in New York and run his business. But the three – plus Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner – were all named to the transition team’s executive committee.

So far, they’ve been heavily involved in shaping the new administration.

They’ve sat in on meetings and taken late night calls from their father. They advocated for making Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman, the White House chief of staff. They counseled against bringing back Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s first campaign manager, who was fired in June on their advice.

On Thursday, Ivanka Trump and Kushner were present for the president-elect’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Trump Tower. Trump has insisted he will build a wall between his White House and his company by placing his holdings into a blind trust, but with his children as its trustees. Federal requirements are that independent outsiders run such trusts.

The children are limited in what formal role they could take in a Trump administration.

Congress passed an anti-nepotism law in 1967 that prohibits the president from appointing a family member to work in the office or agency they oversee. But the law does not appear to prevent the children – or Kushner, who is one of Trump’s closest aides and is said to be weighing a White House role – from serving as unpaid advisers or providing informal counsel.

The three grown children delivered well-received speeches at this summer’s Republican National Convention in which they tried to humanize their father. Don Jr. and Eric were staples on conservative radio and on the road, trekking to campaign offices and small rallies across battleground states like Ohio and North Carolina. Ivanka Trump, meanwhile, was utilized in some of the campaign’s biggest moments, including introducing her father before his convention speech, unveiling his family leave plan and campaigning across the crucial Philadelphia suburbs.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com CRYSTAL LAKE – Despite allowing 339 rushing yards at halftime, the DeKalb football team only was down nine to the prolific offense of Prairie Ridge on Saturday in a Class 6A state playoff semifinal and received the ball to start the second half.

Then the No. 1 Wolves threw a ton of pressure at DeKalb, disrupting the Barbs’ passing game and opening a four-touchdown lead. Although the Barbs made a small comeback late, they fell short in a 54-35 loss in their deepest playoff run since a trip to the title game 36 years ago.

“I always wanted to bring a state championship back to DeKalb,” said senior receiver Cole Tucker, who had 220 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. “But it’s as far as we’ve gone (since 1980), so it was a great year.”

No. 7 DeKalb (10-3) trailed 30-21 at halftime and started the third quarter with the ball. The Barbs were called for two holding penalties on the drive, plus the Wolves’ Joe Perhats made the first of his three sacks in the quarter.

DeKalb punted after a three-and-out, and the Wolves (13-0) needed four plays before Samson Evans plowed in from 1-yard out – his fourth and final touchdown of the game. He also ran for 259 yards as Prairie Ridge gained 512 yards on the ground as a team.

DeKalb had a chance to keep pace, going for a fourth-and-1 on its own 21 and converting on a holding penalty by the Wolves. On the next set of downs, the Barbs faced a fourth-and-2, but quarterback Derek Kyler overthrew Zuerek Day. Prairie Ridge added another touchdown to go up late in the third, then another early in the fourth for a 51-21 lead.

The Barbs scored on the second play of the ensuing drive on a short pass from Kyler to Tucker that turned into a 64-yard touchdown. DeKalb recovered a muffed squib kick, then scored when Kyler rolled out under pressure and found a diving Devin Williams for a 19-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 51-35 with 10:03 left.

So we kept fighting, got the onside kick so we got some momentum and did what we could.”

Perhats fumbled the ensuing onside kick, but was able to recover it. Prairie Ridge then used almost eight minutes of clock, tacking on a field goal with 2:26 left to push the lead to 19.

The Barbs finished with negative rushing yards in the game, in part because of the Wolves’ six sacks of Kyler.

Five of them were in the second half.

“We couldn’t establish a running game, so we had to go to the pass; then they started to bring pressure on the pass and that made it awful hard,” Kyler said. “But we tried to find our ways.”

Prairie Ridge opened the game with a 60-yard touchdown run by Evans, but DeKalb answered back with a six-play drive that was capped by a 60-yard pass

from Kyler to Tucker to take a 7-6 lead.

Evans added a score on the next drive for a 13-7 Prairie Ridge lead.

DeKalb marched down to the Prairie Ridge 18, but Kyler was intercepted

by Justin Mikolajczewski. The Wolves responded with a touchdown by Zach Gulbransen to push the lead to 20-7.

But the Barbs answered back with an 80-yard touchdown pass from Kyler to Day. After another Evans touchdown, Kyler found Tucker for an 80-yard pass. The Barbs’ defense then forced the first three-and-out of the game, but Prairie Ridge then had a three-and-out of its own. The Wolves added a field goal before the half for a 30-21 lead.

Kyler said the Barbs didn’t let the early interception deflate them.

“It was a mistake – I’d say our first mistake of the day on offense,” Kyler said.

Tucker said the team kept fighting after the pick, showing off how he said

they’ve fought all year.

“We could have very well quit,” Tucker said. “But we’re a resilient team, always bouncing back.”

While the Wolves get the trip to the state championship game against Sacred Heart-Griffin for a 6A title, the Barbs’ most successful season in two generations comes to an end.

Coach Matt Weckler, in his fourth year with DeKalb, said the Barbs will miss this group of seniors – which included Day, Tucker and Kyler.

“The senior group has done everything possible and accepted everything that us as a coaching staff has asked them to do,” Weckler said. “They’ve been great leaders. They’ve been with us as a coaching staff from Day 1. I told them before the game even started, these guys are a group of a beginning.

We weren’t going to think of this as the end. We’re going to think of this as the beginning of something special from here on out.”

Tucker said the Barbs did everything they could to keep the game close.

“I think we played our hearts out,” Tucker said. “I think the first half it was a great game, a one-score game.

Then second half they started going quick, we tried to mount a comeback but was just too little too late.”

The Spartans’ defense, which has allowed more than three touchdowns only once in the final nine games of the season, kept the Spartans in the game in the second half. While the Cougars outgained the Spartans 305-279 on the day, Vernon Hills only gained 59 yards and two first downs in the final two quarters.

However, the Spartans’ had three costly turnovers on the day – Tolzin’s fumble, Sulaver’s interception late in the fourth quarter and a fumble in the first quarter by running back Peyton Wiegmann, who finished with 53 rushing yards on 15 carries. The Spartans’ defense also missed several chances for an interception.

While many of the Sycamore players shed tears after the game, Joe Ryan had high praise for the group of graduating seniors who helped turn around a season that began with a 1-3 record and ended in the semifinals.

“A really gritty group that no one gave a shot to,” he said. “They’re going to do a lot of good things in life if they keep fighting like they did all year. ...

Sometimes it doesn’t go your way, but they learned to overcome adversity and fight through hard times.”

SYCAMORE – The onside kick bounced off the grass and into the air.

For the briefest moment, there was hope for the Sycamore football team.

However, Vernon Hills recovered, and a wild postseason run for the Spartans ended with somber hugs as the No. 7 Cougars survived a late rally to seal a 21-16 win over the No. 13 Spartans in a semifinal of the Class 5A state playoffs on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Engh Field in Sycamore.

“It’s hard to be big-picture today,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said of the Spartans’ run to the semifinals. “I told the kids don’t let this be the memory of the season. There were a lot of good things that happened to get it to this point. Nobody thought – we were crashing a lot of parties to get to this point. We wanted to crash one more, but it wasn’t our day.”

The Cougars (10-3) are headed to their first state championship game in program history, while the Spartans (8-5) suffered the fourth semifinal loss in school history.

The Spartans, who rallied in the final minute of their 29-22 overtime win over No. 1 Sterling in the quarterfinals, looked as if they had a little more magic left in the closing minutes against Vernon Hills.

Trailing, 21-10, with less than two minutes remaining, the Spartans went 51 yards in five plays – ending on a 30-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ty Sulaver to senior tight end Donovan Smith – to cut the game to 21-16 with 1:20 remaining.

However, the Spartans’ onside kick was snared by the Cougars.

“We always talk about after wins and losses, we have 48 hours – we have 48 hours before we get back into the film room and get back to work,” glassy-eyed Sycamore senior defensive back Abraham Lesniewski said.

“You let it sting or you let it feel good for 48 hours, and then you have to let it go. I think this one is going to take a little longer than that.”

Vernon Hills held on to its 21-3 halftime lead through the third quarter and well into the fourth before Sycamore made its charge. Sulaver found senior receiver Jordan Tolzin for a 5-yard touchdown to cut it to 21-10 with 7:12 left in the game.

Huskies sweep RedHawks for first MAC tournament title since 2001

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – While waiting for a postgame TV interview, Ray Gooden buried his face into a towel for 20 seconds.

The winningest volleyball coach in Northern Illinois history, Gooden was visibly emotional after the No. 2 seed Huskies swept No. 1 Miami (Ohio) in the championship match of the Mid-American Conference tournament, 25-18, 25-20, 2520, in front of an overflowing crowd Sunday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

After 15 years and 289 wins, Gooden has his first MAC tournament title in his fifth trip to the game.

“The emotions are more ... you want it to work well for them,” Gooden said of his players. “It’s a good group, and this weekend shouldn’t define us; it just might cement it off what this team has done.”

It’s the first MAC Tournament championship for the Huskies since 2001 – which also was played in DeKalb. The win also secures a trip to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011.

The Huskies have been to the MAC Championship five out of the past seven seasons.

When the players and coaches were announced in the postgame ceremony, Gooden was cheered the loudest by far.

“He has been this close so many times, and we just couldn’t pull through for him or for each other,” said senior middle blocker Jenna Radtke, who was named the MAC Player of the Year. “This is probably such a special moment for him.”

The Huskies find out Sunday who they will play in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Coming into the match, it had the makings of a potential five-set thriller between the MAC’s two powerhouses. The two teams were co-champions in the regular season after going 15-1 during conference play. The Huskies (25-5) had won 19 of their past 20 matches, and the RedHawks (24-6) had won 23 out of their past 24 matches – including a 20-game winning streak – after opening the season 1-3.

On Sunday, it was all Huskies.

The RedHawks never led by more than one point in any of the sets, and the NIU defense held Miami to a .221 hitting percentage – including .093 in the second set. “(The defense) was great,” Gooden said. “We were just so locked in today.”

The Huskies senior outside hitter Mary Grace Kelly, who was

named the tournament’s MVP, had 12 kills and three aces, Radtke had 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .500 and junior setter Chandler Kinley and junior libero Anna Brereton each had 14 digs.

The final point came on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Meg Wolowicz, and the Huskies players hugged and hit the floor in celebration.

“First you scream,” Kelly said.

“Then you see the faces of everybody and realize all the hard work you put in the offseason, and it’s Ray’s first tournament championship, for us to be there for it and to get the win for him and the rest of your teammates, you can’t do anything other than cry.”

The players weren’t the only ones to shower praise upon Gooden after the match. NIU athletic director Sean Frazier, who sat courtside during the match, said the celebration was long overdue for Gooden and the Huskies.

“This is big, this is big,” Frazier said. “When you have the dominance and the consistency that coach Gooden and these ladies – not just this year. They are one of our preeminent programs. I’m very proud of them. ... To be represented nationally, to go to the NCAA tournament, it’s phenomenal.”

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – Jimmie Johnson tied Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with a record seven NASCAR championships when the hard-luck breaks of racing turned Sunday’s title-deciding finale into his crowning moment.

Johnson probably had the worst car of the four title contenders at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but a strange sequence of events opened the track for him to take the title over Carl Edwards, Joey Logano and defending champion Kyle Busch.

Edwards was in position to win until a caution with 10 laps remaining set up a wild sequence that ruined his title hopes.

Edwards tried to block Logano on the restart, wound up wrecked, and it was Johnson who drove through the wreckage to take the championship lead.

Butler’s 40 points boost Bulls past Lakers

LOS ANGELES – Jimmy Butler scored a season-high 40 points and Isaiah Canaan added a season-high 17 in the Bulls’ fifth victory in six games, 118-110 over the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.

Nikola Mirotic had 15 points and 15 rebounds and the Bulls held off Los Angeles’ late rally for their third win in four stops on their annual circus road trip.

Rajon Rondo had four points, nine rebounds and 12 assists despite a sore left ankle. He hit a floater in the lane with 28.6 seconds left to secure the Bulls’ win after Los Angeles trimmed a 15-point lead to five.

Dwyane Wade took his first night off this season for the Bulls.

First-half Jordan Howard: The rookie runner has not only emerged as the team’s top back, but best offensive weapon. Howard ran for 72 yards on 12 carries (6-yard average) in the first half. The Giants shut him down after halftime, however. He did add a 22-yard catch on a screen pass but had a few drops.

Fourth-quarter defense: The Bears’ defense did everything it could to give the offense a chance at the end of the game. On four drives before kneeling to seal the win, the Giants managed only one first down in the fourth quarter, as the run defense stepped up and the coverage kept Manning from moving the sticks.

Kickoff returns: Deonte Thompson had been averaging 19.9 yards a kickoff return heading into Sunday, but he broke off a 40-yard return in the first quarter and added a pair of 27-yard returns, averaging 29 yards on the afternoon.

Pass rush: The Giants are one of the better teams in the league in keeping their quarterback upright, but McPhee, Willie Young and Leonard Floyd combined for one QB hit, from McPhee on the Giants’ final drive. Manning had way too much time to throw on key plays. The Bears finished with no sacks and four QB hits.

Second-half offense: The run game stalled after halftime, with the Giants shooting their gaps and stacking the box to contain Howard, who had only 5 yards on five carries in the second half.

All four of the Giants’ sacks came after halftime, taking advantage of an O-line without three starters.

The Bears had only 101 yards of offense after halftime.

Taking advantage of opportunities: Adrian Amos dropped an interception, Josh Bellamy missed a chance to recover a muffed punt, and the offense sputtered when given several chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter.

Dropped pick: Amos had a golden opportunity for an interception on third down in the second quarter, but he couldn’t corral the errant Manning pass. Instead of a takeaway and potentially good field position based on a return, the Bears watched Robbie Gould kick a field goal on the next play.

Eli’s scramble: Early in the third quarter, the Bears had the Giants in a third-and-4 situation from their own 27-yard line in a tie game. Manning, not known for his mobility, was able to scramble – albeit awkwardly – for 4 yards and a first down. The slide also knocked Tracy Porter out of the game for a few plays, and the Giants scored a touchdown four plays later.

The strip-sack: Two long throws had the Bears in business with two minutes to go from the Giants’ 30-yard line, but Jason Pierre-Paul strip-sacked Cutler. The Bears recovered the football but couldn’t rally. Cutler threw an interception to end the Bears’ hopes on the next play.

What now?

Record: 2-8 What it means: It’s the Bears’ worst mark through 10 games since 2002, and with more key players hurt, it’s hard to imagine when things can turn around.

What’s next: The Bears return to Soldier Field on Nov. 27 for the first time since Halloween to host Marcus Mariota and the Titans.

Guard Josh Sitton left with an ankle injury and was unable to return.

The point is that due as much or more to injuries as talent, Bears fans are apparently going to get what many want, as this team will be drafting very high in April, most likely in the top five.

The Bears did little Sunday against the Giants to help us understand what they now must do with that high pick.

After a week of farewell wishes and epitaphs, good Jay Cutler showed up in New York again, making a bunch of throws that only a handful of other QBs in the league can make.

Cutler clearly no longer is the quarterback of the future, and the Bears must find a new hope to inherit that mantle.

But the question of the wisdom of cutting the cord with Cutler once and

for all at the end of this season, consequences be damned, or if he should be back one more year to serve as a bridge to the future is cloudy again, as Cutler made them competitive in a game they probably should not have been.

Developing players such as Jordan Howard, Jeremy Langford, Cody Whitehair, Cam Meredith and, hopefully, Kevin White are more competitive than they should be at this early stage of their careers and probably develop more quickly when Cutler plays like he did Sunday.

The loss to the Giants magnified serious needs at tight end and offensive tackle that many had hoped to avoid.

On defense, we continue to long for an extended look at this group with Eddie Goldman in the lineup, but it didn’t happen again Sunday, and the Bears clearly need at least one more young, huge, space-eating stud up front.

Tracy Porter had another fine day refusing to allow Odell Beckham Jr. to be the difference in the game, but we’ve known for some time the Bears need more cornerbacks.

What may have been cemented Sunday in Jersey is they need two more safeties, as well.

Deon Bush got a start ahead of Harold Jones-Quartey and showed little, while Adrian Amos flashed the hands of a bricklayer batting away a knuckleball from Eli Manning in his own red zone that clearly should have been picked.

Amos is good enough to be on the field but seems consistently unable to actually make any plays.

At some point next year or the year after, some dividends will be reaped from general manager Ryan Pace’s first two drafts, and they could be significant. There is some talent and promise to mold.

What we learned Sunday is the next six weeks will be about little more than trying to figure out which of the young players can become those keepers while the Bears continue to lose.

The good news for the Bears coming out of MetLife Stadium is unlike last week in Tampa, Florida, the Bears showed up and acquitted themselves well in terms of effort.

The bad news is even when giving their all, these Bears just aren’t good enough to compete with a merely better-than-average NFL team.

The Bears’ 22-16 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, was costly in terms beyond credibility.

There is no more chilling sight in the NFL than seeing a player leave the field immobilized on a backboard, but that is how the Bears’ most-prized rookie, Leonard Floyd, left the game.

Early reports are promising in terms of the young man’s health, and of course that is all that really matters, but it also is likely he won’t be playing any more football any time soon.

There is no position at which the Bears are thinner than tight end. The one guy they’ve been able to count on, Zach Miller, was off to his best start of the season and Sunday had three catches for 61 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown, before leaving the

Schmelzle finishes historic season for NIU DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois senior Hope Schmelzle finished in 20:51.3 at the NCAA National Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Schmelzle was the first Huskie to qualify for the national race and took 103rd place.

“Our plan was to expect a conservative start to the race, because of the very windy conditions,” NIU coach Adrian Myers said. “The race ended up with a complete opposite start, which made it hard for her to get in a good rhythm after the first kilometer.”

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NIU falls at Macomb: In a see-saw

battle that featured 10 lead changes, eight ties and no double-digit leads, NIU came up short at the end, falling to the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 83-79, to suffer its first loss of the season.

NIU (2-1) took a 77-73 lead with less than a minute to play on a 3-pointer

by Courtney Woods, who scored 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting to lead the Huskies. Western Illinois then went on an 8-0 run to take an 81-77 lead as WIU’s Michelle Farrow had a pair of steals in that stretch and hit two free throws with six seconds to play to give the Leathernecks the four-point margin.

NIU freshman Janae Poisson hit a pair of free throws to cut the margin to two with three seconds remaining, before Western Illinois’ Emily Clemens iced the game for WIU with two free throws. Clemens scored 34 points on 10-of-14 shooting and went 13 of 14 from the free-throw line to lead Western Illinois.

“You’ve got to give credit to Western,” said NIU coach Lisa Carlsen.

“They played with a little more sense of urgency pretty consistently this afternoon. That’s what you’re going to come up against when you’re on the road especially. We have to be able to bring the same energy at home to

Dear Dr. K: You recently wrote about e-cigarettes not being safe for teens. What about hookahs? I don’t completely understand what they are. Are they OK for my teen? I think he might be smoking them.

Dear Reader: A hookah is a water pipe people use to smoke a specially made tobacco. Often the tobacco used in hookahs is flavored, which makes smoking it more attractive to some people.

A hookah uses coal to burn the tobacco.

This creates either smoke or a vapor that is inhaled through a tube. People usually smoke a hookah as a group, passing the mouthpiece from one person to another.

Hookah smoking is on the rise among youths. According to a 2014 study in the journal Pediatrics, 18 percent of high school seniors have smoked a hookah.

Hookahs have been around for centuries. In ancient Persia and Asia, smoking a hookah was considered an aristocratic and elegant thing to do. Perhaps because of this reputation -- and because it’s an ancient practice -- many people think that it isn’t as dangerous as smoking cigarettes. But it is just as dangerous, if not more so.

The smoke you inhale from a hookah contains the smoke from both coal and tobacco, which are full of toxins and cancer-causing substances. In fact, tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer. The smoke also has nicotine. Nicotine, by itself, does not cause cancer -- but it is the chemical that makes people addicted to tobacco.

It can lead to lung disease, cardiovascular disease, infertility, and low birth weight in the babies of women who smoke hookahs. Also, because the mouthpiece is often passed from person to person, there is the risk of passing infection.

Since hookahs are smoked as a group, the smoking session may last a while, which can lead to more exposure to the toxins. A person smoking a hookah with a group of other people not only is exposed to the smoke he deliberately sucks into his body through the tube. He is also exposed to smoke in the air around him, which typically is heavy. As a result, an hour of hookah smoking exposes someone to as much as 200 times the smoke as smoking one cigarette.

Smoking a hookah may be more appealing to teens than smoking cigarettes. First, there’s the novelty of the device itself.

Second is the fact that it’s a group activity – and it’s particularly important for teens to feel like part of a group.

Your teen may think smoking a hookah is just something fun to do with his friends.

Tell him about the health risks involved.

Be sure to let him know he and his friends could end up putting their health, even their lives, in danger if they continue the practice.

A heart to the jack, a spade to the nine and 10, a heart through and a second spade at trick seven give the defenders five hearts and six spades for down seven!

Finally, note that if East were in four hearts, after South leads the diamond ace, North should signal with his queen. Then South continues with a low diamond for the killing club-queen shift.
