Madigan’s plan a crime against taxpayers POLL

When you’re not committed to fixing a problem, it’s only going to get worse.

That’s certainly the case with Illinois’ massively underfunded state pension systems.

According to the most recent report from the state’s bipartisan Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability, Illinois’ five public pension systems are now underfunded by $130 billion. That’s up from $111 billion last year, a staggering 17 percent increase.

To put that into some perspective, Illinois’ total operating budget was $36 billion in fiscal 2015, the last year the state had a full-year, approved budget. Of course, revenue and expenses fluctuate from one year to the next, but using that 2015 budget number as a base (because it’s what we have), it would take the state of Illinois more than 3½ years to fully fund its pension systems if it spent every penny in the general fund on pensions.

Of course, that’s not going to happen.

State government needs to operate.

Current state employees need to get paid.

State contractors need to be reimbursed for work already completed. ... Oh wait, they don’t necessarily. The state currently owes vendors such as human services providers, small businesses and others $10.6 billion, a figure that could reach more than $13 billion by July. But that’s another column for another day.

Playing politics as usual in Springfield, of course. Translation: nothing.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has a plan to help stimulate Illinois’ economy. His Turnaround Agenda includes enacting comprehensive workers’ compensation, tort liability and collective bargaining reform, freezing property taxes and allowing local governments to opt out of paying the prevailing wage on construction and other projects.

But House Speaker Michael Madigan wants nothing to do with it. His plan? Maintain the status quo in terms of policy, and raise everyone’s taxes to fill the shortfalls.

Madigan’s plan is not really a plan at all.

It’s a crime against taxpayers.

DAILY FANTASY SPORTS RIVALS DRAFTKINGS AND FANDUEL TO MERGE

BOSTON – Daily fantasy sports rivals DraftKings and FanDuel have agreed to merge after months of speculation and increasing regulatory scrutiny.

The two companies made the announcement Friday, saying the combined organization would be able to reduce costs as they work to become profitable and battle with regulators across the country to remain legal.

In a matter of a few short years, the two have raised millions of dollars through investors and sponsorship deals, drawing the attention of policymakers across the country.

Some view the online games – in which players pick teams of real life athletes and vie for cash and

other prizes based on how those athletes do in actual games – as amounting to illegal sports betting.

Financial terms were not disclosed Friday and the companies have remained vague about their longterm plans while the deal is being finalized.

But in the short term, the merger appears to change little about how daily fantasy sports players use the sites and play the game. The companies have assured players they won’t be making major changes in their operations at least through the next NFL season.

For now, they’ll retain their respective headquarters – DraftKings in Boston and FanDuel in New York – and keep separate brand names, operations and game platforms.

Student sections enjoying DeKalb, Sycamore football runs

ecarifio@shawmedia.com It’s not just players on the field who relish a deep playoff run.

Also excited are the hundreds of students in the stands chanting that they believe their team will win, or that they cannot hear the opposing fans, while decked out in black and gold, black and orange, rainbow colors, neon, camouflage, 1980s gear or anything else.

While the DeKalb and Sycamore football teams prepare for their respective state semifinal playoff games, the student sections that have been following them all year also are making

their plans for today’s games – both at 1 p.m., with No. 13-seeded Sycamore hosting No. 7-seeded Vernon Hills and No. 7-seeded DeKalb heading to No. 1-seeded Prairie Ridge.

DeKalb upset third-seeded CaryGrove, 35-21, in the quarterfinals, while the Spartans also had a quarterfinal upset, defeating top-seeded Sterling, 2922 in overtime of that game. The Spartans were behind in the final minute to a team that had beaten them 38-6 in Week 1.

“Throughout the whole week, no one was expecting us to overcome that adversity,” said Trent Scott, a senior golfer and basketball player at Sycamore

who also is active in the SycoWard – the school’s fan section. “It was unreal. Everyone went crazy. We were losing with a minute left, then Ty (Sulaver) came up with that two-point conversion. It was a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

Call it the evolution of the student section over the past couple of years.

The IHSA began a Student Section Showdown in 2015 to find the best cheering sections in the state. Ottawa was last year’s winner in Class 3A/4A – based on basketball enrollments.

Both DeKalb with the Crow’s Nest and Sycamore with the SycoWard have entered the contest in the past two years as more and more students

start not only attending home games, but traveling with the team on the road.

Scott said there were at least 40 students in Chicago for the Solorio game, while the Crow’s Nest had at least that many at its one road game so far in Antioch.

The sections use social media, mainly Twitter, to coordinate travel and themes for each game.

As Scott does at Sycamore, DeKalb senior Ian Panke runs the Twitter account for the Barbs’ student section.

He’s also an outfielder with the Barbs baseball team.

Moonlight Madness kicks off Sycamore’s holiday season

news@daily-chronicle.com As Mother Nature did her part by blowing in wintry weather, Sycamore store owners started off their holiday preview weekend Friday night.

Eleven businesses set up decorations and showcased local performers for the downtown’s Moonlight Madness event.

One popular window at D&D Jewelers featured puppies available for adoption at TAILS. Students at the Beth Fowler School of Dance performed in several windows along State Street.

Paulson’s Furniture featured a string trio from Sycamore High School, which greeted visitors with “Adeste Fideles” as they walked through the door.

Donald Paulson said his store has been participating in the event for the past three years. While the fast drop in temperatures concerned him, he was optimistic people would get out to the event. “It brings people in. People seem to be in a good mood no matter what the weather is,” he said.

Kathy Jones, owner of Stomp, started the event in her store.

“We started it several years ago.

A few years ago we offered to share it with the Chamber of Commerce and to encourage other local businesses to participate in it,” Jones said. “My purpose is to give shoppers the opportunity to enjoy Thanksgiving. It’s so overlooked with Black Friday now.

This way, people don’t have to rush out at 5 o’clock and ruin their dinner to try to get an item that there may only be

one or two of.“ At Stomp, the Sycamore High School Madrigal singers entertained visitors. Drayton Eggleston directs the group. He said this was their first performance of the season. They are getting ready for their shows Dec. 16 and 17.

“This year we’re doing something a little bit different. We’re having just a dessert instead of a dinner,” Eggleston said. He’s hoping that a reduced price for the evening may encourage more students to participate.

Jones said having the performers at the shops seems to boost interest in the evening.

“Some of the people come down to see their kids, and they may not shop tonight, but they can see what our stores have. The customers love it; they come back religiously,” Jones said.

“We have had people come down from Rockford, as far away as Naperville – we even have a set of sisters come from Wisconsin.”

DeKalb resident Adam Carter drove to Sycamore to walk around with his three children.

“We actually just moved to the area this August. We were just looking for things in the area that were Christmasy or fall-like and so we’re here,” Carter said. His children agreed that the cookies and puppies were worth the visit.

Jones hopes that’s what people will take away from the event. “If we can take that stress out and replace it with a bit of fun, we’ve done our job,” she said.

CLYDE EDWARD FORE

Born: November 22, 1918; in Chicago, IL Died: November 16, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Clyde Edward Fore, 97, of DeKalb, Illinois, formerly of Elgin, Illinois and Sun City, Arizona, passed away at his home early in the morning on Wednesday, November 16, 2016.

Born November 22, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the son of Walton and Lillian (Werner) Fore. Clyde married Barbara Geisz Barron on July 28, 1951. He was employed by the Elgin Watch Company for 26 years as a steel engraver. He later worked for General Mills in West Chicago.

Clyde was a six year veteran of the United States Navy. He served during World War II, helping to clean up the damage at Pearl Harbor and later serving on six war patrols

on the submarine USS Dace. After the war he was commended for helping to bring a captured Japanese submarine back from Japan to Pearl Harbor. He was an avid fisherman.

He enjoyed many fun filled days fishing in the Fox River, Chain of Lakes, Lake Michigan, lakes all over Wisconsin and especially in later years at Shabbona Lake. He enjoyed many other outdoor activities, including the collecting of fossils, geodes and Petoskey stones from many parts of the USA. He collected and preserved many species of butterflies and moths, some of which are on display at the Russell’s Woods Museum.

Clyde has influenced so many adults and children in his lifetime, teaching us all about life, origami, fishing, butterflies and respect for nature.

He is survived by his son, William (Linda) Barron; seven grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his brother, Earl; his son, Paul; and his parents.

There will be no service or visitation. Interment of cremated remains will be conducted at a later date at East Dundee Township Cemetery in Dundee.

Donald J. Oranger, 80, of Hampshire passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 17, 2016 in Elgin.

He was born March 27, 1936 in Melrose Park the son of Eltson and Grace (Parry) Oranger. Don attended Burlington Central High School and then served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. Following his military service, he married Sandra B. Anderson Sept. 7, 1957 in Lily Lake.

Stephen “Steve” Wayne Phillips, 61, of Esmond, Illinois, passed away peacefully Monday, November 14, 2016, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Born September 11, 1955, in DeKalb, the son of Jack and Dollie Mae (Frisbee) Phillips, Steve married Teresa Hughes on June 23, 1984 at the Methodist Church in Sycamore.

Steve was employed by the DeKalb County Highway Department for nearly 30 years. He enjoyed racing and building cars and spent many hours with his son Darrell in the race shop and at the race track.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Teresa; his son and daughter-in-law, Darrell Wayne and Cari Phillips; his beloved grandchildren, Lauren Grace and Ryan Wayne; his brother, Douglas (Susie) Phillips; his mother and father-in-law, Morris and Esther Hughes; his sister-in-law, Tammie (Tim) Mosher; his brother-in-laws, Tom (DeAnna) Hughes and Mike Hughes; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Steve also leaves behind his dog, Race.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and special dog, Buckwheat.

DeKALB – DeKalb residents could see an increase in their property tax bill next year based on the requested 2016 tax levy approved by the DeKalb School District 428 board.

The board adopted a 2016 tax levy request of about $54.3 million based on an assessor’s estimate that equalized assessed values in DeKalb will rise by 7.8 percent.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the tax levy request, which would result in a $50 property tax increase for the owner of a home worth $150,000.

Cindy Carpenter, the district’s financial accounting manager, said the district has reached its legal tax cap in most funds because of declining equalized assessed values over the past several years, but the projected EAV increase could begin to change that.

“I don’t know if this year will turn that around completely, but it definitely will help us,” Carpenter said.

Equalized assessed values declined by 27.4 percent from 2009 to 2014, but then they increased by 1.3 percent from 2014 to 2015.

“At that point we were like, ‘OK, have we seen the bottom? Are we going to creep up a little bit?’ “ Carpen-

Turkey drive lands 719 birds for Thanksgiving

D e KALB – Wanting to help others celebrate Thanksgiving, Bill Finucane, DeKalb’s 2nd Ward alderman, volunteered Friday to help with Let’s Talk Turkey.

Let’s Talk Turkey is sponsored by WLBK in partnership with First National Bank, Pardridge Insurance, Heritage Woods, Splash of Color, Genoa Automotive and state Rep. Bob Pritchard, R-Hinckley. The turkey drive was hosted at The Salvation Army, 830 Grove St. in DeKalb.

“My wife and I raised three children, and we know how important the holidays are,” Finucane said. “We have enough, and we wanted to help others. That’s why I volunteered.”

This year, 309 frozen turkeys and $4,098, or enough money to purchase an additional 410 turkeys – a total of 719 turkeys were donated to help poor and needy families – in DeKalb County celebrate Thanksgiving.

The turkeys will be distributed along with four cans of vegetables, cranberry sauce and mixes for potatoes, stuffing, dessert and drinks.

The Thanksgiving baskets will be distributed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday to 609 registered families in DeKalb County. Families that did not register in advance can still receive a basket if they stop by The Salvation

Army from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Last year, with monetary donations, 560 turkeys were donated and 704 families registered to receive a basket. Extra turkeys and donated food not distributed for Thanksgiving is used throughout the year for The Salvation Army’s food pantry.

“There are a lot of low-income families in DeKalb County, and sometimes the stress and financial obligation of Thanksgiving is too much,” Salvation Army Social Services Director Rhonda Brown said. “Commercials on TV show a big dinner and an all-American family. Not everyone can afford that. That’s why we try to help by providing a Thanksgiving dinner for them.”

Groups that donated a large number of turkeys include Cortland Flooring, which donated 10; First State Bank donated 11; St. George Greek Orthodox Church’s Anagenesis chapter of Philoptochos donated 11; the DeKalb Lions Club donated 12; Visiting Angels donated 25 and the DeKalb Fire Department donated 120 turkeys and $800.

Other large monetary donors include the Napa Auto Group with $436, Anderson Funeral Home with $500, the Kishwaukee Kiwanis with $500 and Adolph Miller with $1,000.

“Some families, they have nothing,” Anagensis Vice President Effie Kidisos said.

“They need food, and we wanted to help them. It’s important to help others, especially during the holidays.”

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police are investigating after a jogger reported she was attacked and groped by a man Thursday evening near the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Spiros Court.

The 21-year-old woman told police she was jogging when the attack happened about 6:15 p.m. Thursday

in the 1000 block of West Hillcrest Drive, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

The woman was running west on Hillcrest and had just passed the intersection of Hillcrest Drive and Spiros Court when she was pushed down from behind and groped.

The jogger got up quickly and yelled for help, Petragallo said. At that point, the man ran off to the south on Spiros toward Varsity Bou-

DeKalb police are investigating the crime and will have additional presence in the area, he added.

Police seek donations for Heroes and Helpers DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is seeking donations for its Heroes and Helpers program, in which officers take underpriviledged children to shop for Christmas presents.

This year’s program will be Dec. 11 at the Target store in DeKalb. The police department is requesting that it receive all donations by Dec. 1.

People who wish to contribute can bring their donations to the front desk of the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Highway, or contact Community Relations Officer Kelly Sullivan at 815-748-8446 for information.

Children who live in DeKalb or are

students in DeKalb School District 428 are selected in advance for the program. They are allowed to choose $100 worth of presents for themselves and family members.

The gifts are wrapped by Target associates and delivered to the children’s homes the week before Christmas. Target also provides food for the children the day of shopping.

Last year’s Heroes and Helpers program assisted more than 70 children, and organizers are looking to increase that number this year, according to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department.

Anyone who makes a donation of $100 can nominate a child to be part of the program and have the donation go to that child, according to the release.

Damage was done to the preserve and items were removed on the evening of Oct. 30, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

The 60-acre Sycamore Forest Preserve, 955 E. State St., Sycamore, was created on the site of former flood-prone Evergreen Village Mobile Home Park. Construction work has been underway at the site for months as crews work on parking lots, picnic shelters and a trailhead for the Great Western Trail.

The preserve remains closed to the public.

There have been previous incidents of vandalism at the site. A heron carved from a tree stump was stolen earlier this year.

“I think we knew it was a tough test facing Cary-Grove, and everybody knows playing Prairie Ridge is hard ’cause they obviously haven’t lost yet,” Panke said. “This team has the skills to beat anyone in the state. I expect it to be great.”

Both Scott and Panke said their student sections are made up of a large number of athletes from other sports.

Scott said of the students who made the trip to the playoff opener in Chicago against Solorio, about 75 percent of them were athletes in other sports.

Scott said it also helps that when you see a familiar face at a game, you’re likely to reciprocate – the SycoWard has been active at volleyball and basketball games as well.

“I’ve played golf and basketball, and golf doesn’t have any support like that, obviously,” Scott said.

“But when I played basketball and the other students were there, it was awesome. When people support you, you want to support them. It’s a great feeling having people behind you and them having your back.”

Panke said the momentum, both on the field and in the stands, carries over to other sports.

“A lot of us are athletes, and it gets people excited about their sports and makes them want to be successful,” Panke said. “It’s cool they made it this far, and it makes us want to go this far in our own sports.”

“I think between high school, college and the NFL, that was probably the best football game I’ve ever been a part of,” Mizgalski said. “We were down with eight minutes left, then it looked like we weren’t going to get the football back. We stopped them, then we got the extra point to tie. Everyone thought this would be our last game, and it wasn’t.

It was a lot of fun.

“Saturday, we’re expecting them to come out with the same intensity, maybe even more after riding the momentum of beating the No. 1 seed,” he said. “We’re not only rooting for them, but we’re feeling good about our chances on moving on to state.”

Panke will be making the trip to Crystal Lake today to see the Barbs take on the top-seeded Wolves, and said he expects to see a good game.

Same with Liza Vega, a Crow’s Nester who’s been to every football game this year.

“It’s honestly been crazy to see how far they’ve come and the enthusiasm and excitement they’ve brought to the school,” Vega said. “I just want to see them play, see how much they can succeed. It’s just crazy.”

Vega, a senior, said she used to be a cheerleader.

She also said that she’s been going to games her whole time in high school. She did so early on when her brother, Jonathan Vega, played on the football team. He graduated in 2014.

“Seeing all of it happen, it’s different, and this year I didn’t expect it to be so crazy,” Vega said.

“It’s funny to think it’s November and football is still going. Basketball is supposed to be going, and I’m still going to football games. I’m getting ready for maybe my last football game.”

CHICAGO – Immigration hotlines are buzzing. Legal clinics are seeing an influx of clients. Public schools are fielding frantic questions from parents and students.

Since the election, Donald Trump’s tough talk on immigration has stirred anxiety nationwide among immigrants regardless of legal status. They are turning to lawyers, schools, advocacy groups and congressional offices for help.

“We’re operating with a lot of unknowns, and a certain amount of fear comes with that,” said Vanessa Esparza-López, a managing attorney at the Chicago-based National Immigrant Justice Center.

In Chicago, a hotline run by the state’s largest immigrant-rights group received more than 330 calls in the week after the election, compared with the usual 100 or so. Denver school officials sent a letter to parents in response to questions about the election’s effect on students living in the country illegally.

The New York Legal Assistance Group said it’s receiving 40 to 60 daily calls about immigration, up from 20 to 30. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles reported

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Corrections’ director said staff at the major women’s prison needs training on how to work with female inmates.

John Baldwin responded to a federally funded study of Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln released Friday that found women there are treated more harshly than men and end up spending more time behind bars than necessary.

Most female inmates were put together at Logan in a 2013 consolidation the report found “chaotic.” In a statement Friday, Baldwin said poor planning by a former administration “was a setup for failure.”

School crossing guards in city lose police uniforms

CHICAGO – School crossing guards in Chicago are losing their police uniforms, which many guards said could impact students’ safety.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel transferred about 900 crossing guards from the Chicago Police Department to the Office of Emergency Management months ago, WLS-TV reported. The crossing guards went to City Hall in hopes that an amendment switching them back to the police department would pass, but the administration wouldn’t budge.

“They fought every way they could to prevent us from ever getting an amendment on the council floor to vote on it,” Alderman Scott Waguespack said.

NTSB investigator arrives at Illinois explosion site

CANTON – Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board are leading the investigation of a natural gas explosion that killed one person and demolished buildings in a central Illinois city.

The Peoria Journal Star reported investigator Ravi Chhatre of the NTSB spoke at a news conference Friday in Canton, which was where Wednesday evening’s blast occurred. He said it may take a year before the agency issues a report. The NTSB investigates pipeline accidents that involve fatalities, substantial property damage or significant injury.

Canton Police Chief Rick Nichols said local authorities welcome the federal assistance. The city planned to allow some businesses on the downtown square to reopen Friday afternoon.

Liquor license of strip club next to convent revoked

CHICAGO – A strip club next door to a suburban Chicago convent has had its liquor license taken away.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that Stone Park mayor and liquor commissioner Beniamino Mazzulla said Club Allure violates an ordinance that prohibits the sale of liquor within 100 feet of a church, school or home for the aged.

Club Allure attorney and former investor Robert Itzkow said the ruling will be appealed to the state’s Liquor Control Commission. He also said the club will continue to offer liquor.

In January, a Cook County Circuit Court judge told the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo to rework their 2013 lawsuit against the club. The judge dismissed arguments that the club violated prostitution regulations and local zoning laws.

SAN DIEGO – President-elect Donald Trump agreed Friday to pay $25 million to settle lawsuits against his now-defunct Trump University for real estate investors, averting a trial in a potentially embarrassing case that he had vowed during the campaign to keep fighting.

The settlement came 10 days before jury selection was scheduled to begin in one of the three cases. The complaints accused Trump University, which wasn’t an accredited school, of defrauding students who paid up to $35,000 a year to enroll in programs that promised to share Trump’s real estate secrets.

Oklahoma residents hit by quakes sue 27 companies TULSA, Okla. – Residents of a town hit by Oklahoma’s strongest earthquake have filed a class-action lawsuit against dozens of energy companies,

accusing them of triggering destructive temblors by injecting wastewater from oil and natural gas production underground.

Pawnee residents filed the suit Thursday in district court against 27 companies, saying they operate wastewater injection wells even though they know the method causes earthquakes. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount for property damage and reduced value, plus emotional distress.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the town of about 2,200 in September and the lawsuit claims 52 more have hit the area since.

EPA orders Flint to outline fixes before water switch DETROIT– Flint must take several steps before switching its drinking water source again because of the lead-contamination crisis, federal officials said Friday, including a three-month water-testing period.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency updated its order issued in January, calling for Flint to complete a three-mile interconnection so it can test water from the new source for three months while continuing to provide water from Detroit’s system. The city also must submit a new water treatment plan.

Jeff Sessions for attorney general, Kansas Rep. Mike Pompeo to head the CIA and former military intelligence chief Michael Flynn as his national security adviser.

All three have been fierce critics of President Barack Obama’s handling of terrorism and international relations. In tapping Sessions and Flynn, Trump also is rewarding loyalty from two of his most ardent supporters during the presidential campaign.

Trump is a foreign policy novice and his early moves on national security are being closely watched both in the U.S. and overseas. Sessions and Pompeo would both require Senate confirmation before assuming their designated roles; Flynn would not.

Flynn, who has called Islam a “political ideology” that “hides behind being a religion,” will work in the West Wing and have frequent access to Trump as he makes national security decisions. Trump said in a statement Friday that Flynn would be “by my side as we work to defeat radical Islamic terrorism, navigate geopolitical challenges and keep Americans safe at home and abroad.”

A member of the House intelligence committee, Pompeo said former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden should face the death penalty for taking and releasing secret documents about surveillance programs in which the U.S. government collected the phone records of millions of Americans.

Trump called Pompeo “an unrelenting leader for our intelligence community to ensure the safety of Americans and our allies.”

The president-elect is still weighing a range of candidates for other leading national security posts. His choices for secretary of state are said to include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton, Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who met with Trump on Thursday.

Syrian hospital is bombed for second time Workers scramble to evacuate infants

BEIRUT– Doctors and nurses at a pediatric hospital in eastern Aleppo scrambled Friday to evacuate babies in incubators from underground shelters after the facility in the besieged Syrian city was bombed for the second time this week.

Medics and aid workers also reported a suspected attack involving toxic gas in a district on the western edge of the rebel-held area. At least 12 people, including children, were treated for breathing difficulties, said Adham Sahloul of the Syrian American Medical Society, which supports health facilities in Aleppo.

Claims of toxic gas attacks are common in Syria, and reports by international inspectors have held the government responsible for using chemicals in attacks on civilians, which Damascus denies.

Airstrikes also hit a village in rural areas of Aleppo province, killing seven

members of a family, including four children, opposition activists said.

Friday was the fourth day of renewed assaults by Syrian warplanes on eastern Aleppo districts, a rebel-held enclave of 275,000 people. The onslaught began Tuesday, when Syria’s ally Russia announced its own offensive on the northern rebel-controlled Idlib province and Homs province in central Syria.

Since then, more than 100 people have been killed across northern Syria.

Friday’s airstrikes in Aleppo hit a complex of four hospitals that had been attacked two days earlier. The latest strikes forced the pediatric hospital and a neighboring facility to stop operating.

“Now it is being bombed. ... I am sorry. ... I have to go to transfer the children,” the head of the pediatric hospital wrote in a text message to The Associated Press. The doctor identified himself only by his first name of Hatem because he fears for reprisals against his family.

The incubators already had been moved underground for safety, but with bombs falling all around the facility, hospital workers had to rush them to a safer place despite the danger.

Hatem rushed 14 babies in incubators to another facility a 10-minute drive

away while airstrikes continued, he said in a later message.

“As we drove out with the ambulance, warplanes were firing and artillery were shelling,” he wrote. “But thank God we were not hurt.”

Some of the survivors of the suspected gas attack were taken to the children’s hospital.

The cameras of Al-Jazeera, which was broadcasting from the facility as the airstrikes occurred, went dark for a

moment. When video resumed, dust was swirling and debris was strewn in the corridors.

Nurses scurried to get babies to safety, and one was seen carrying a blanket-wrapped infant. She then hugged and comforted another nurse who was sobbing as she picked up a baby.

Another hospital in a different Aleppo neighborhood was bombed Thursday night, the doctor told AP. The entrance was set on fire but no one was hurt.

DALLAS – The head of the company building the Dakota Access oil pipeline said Friday that it won’t be rerouted but that he’d like to meet with the head of an American Indian tribe to try to ease the tribe’s concerns about the project.

Kelcy Warren, the CEO of Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners, told The Associated Press that the company has no alternative than to stick to its plan for the $3.8 billion pipeline, which would ship oil from North Dakota to Illinois and which is nearly completed.

“There’s not another way. We’re building at that location,” Warren said.

Warren said he would welcome the chance to meet with Dave Archambault, the chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux, to address the tribe’s concerns that the pipeline skirting its reservation would endanger drinking water and cultural sites.

Archambault, who was with celebrity sympathizers who toured the tribe’s protest encampment Friday, including the actors Shailene Woodley and Ezra Miller, said he’d be willing to meet with Warren but that he doesn’t think it would make a difference.

Sea of foam flows from airport hangar The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN JOSE, Calif. – Much of the foam that spewed out of a Northern California airport hangar and flooded a city street appears to be gone.

TV news footage Friday afternoon showed little of the foam from Mineta San Jose International Airport that was several feet deep in spots and had taken up a city block earlier in the day.

The bobbing sea of white foam covered cars and blocked businesses as it cascaded onto a nearby street.

The foam was a chemical used as a fire retardant and was coming from the hangar’s fire prevention system, San Jose fire Capt. Mitch Matlow told The Mercury News. Matlow said the retardant discharged accidentally and began spilling out in the morning.

All of the foam is released when the fire system goes off.

“The purpose is to prevent a flammable liquid fire inside the hangar from spreading ... ,” he said. “If there had been a fire, this system would’ve worked very well.”

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is blocking new oil and gas drilling in the Arctic Ocean, handing a victory to environmentalists who say industrial activity in the icy waters will harm whales, walruses and other wildlife and exacerbate global warming.

A five-year offshore drilling plan announced Friday blocks the planned sale of new oil and gas drilling rights in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas north of Alaska. The plan allows drilling to go forward in Alaska’s Cook Inlet southwest of Anchorage.

The blueprint for drilling from 2017 to 2022 can be rewritten by President-elect Donald Trump, in a process that could take months or years.

Besides Cook Inlet, the plan also allows drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, long the center of U.S. offshore oil production.

Ten of the 11 lease sales proposed in the five-year plan are in the Gulf, mostly off the coasts of Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Alabama.

Confirming a decision announced this spring, the five-year plan also bars

drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

“The plan focuses lease sales in the best places – those with the highest resource potential, lowest conflict and established infrastructure – and removes regions that are simply not right to lease,” said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

“Given the unique and challenging Arctic environment and industry’s declining interest in the area, forgoing lease sales in the Arctic is the right path forward,” Jewell said.

The decision follows an announcement last year by Royal Dutch Shell PLC that it would cease exploration in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas after spending nearly $7 billion. The company cited disappointing results from a well drilled in the Chukchi and the unpredictable federal regulatory environment.

Despite that, industry representatives reacted bitterly to the latest announcement, calling the decision blatantly political.

“The arrogance of the decision is unfathomable, but unfortunately not surprising,” said Randall Luthi, president of the National Ocean Industries Association, an industry group.

Government’s public relations spending

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society,” wrote Edward Bernays, regarded as the “father of public relations,” in his influential 1928 book, “Propaganda.”

The U.S. government seems to have taken this message to heart, spending significant resources on public relations efforts.

Federal agencies have spent about $1 billion a year over the past decade on advertising and public relations, according to a recent Government Accountability Office report. Even this figure likely understates the actual costs, the GAO notes, because of imprecise budget classifications and the difficulty in defining “public relations” activities and personnel.

The Defense Department is responsible for the largest share of public relations activity by far, accounting for 40 percent of all federal public relations personnel and 60 percent of all PR spending. The Department of Veterans Affairs experienced the largest rate of increase in public relations spending during the period, doubling its PR staff from 144 in 2006 to 286 in 2014 (which was, probably not coincidentally, the year the VA hospital negligence and wait time scandal broke).

The government’s public relations services include perfectly legitimate functions, such as providing notice of impending regulations and public comment periods or informing the public about health and safety threats. But when the Health and Human Services Department launches an expensive pro-Obamacare advertising campaign, or the Pentagon tries to spin and influence media coverage of military actions, the question we must continually ask is: When does public information cross the line to propaganda?

A report last year from Arizona Republican Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake criticized what they called “paid patriotism,” the practice of the military paying pro and college sports teams to perform on-field flag ceremonies, surprise homecomings, wounded warrior tributes, ceremonial first pitches and the like.

“Americans deserve the ability to assume that tributes for our men and women in military uniform are genuine displays of national pride, which many are, rather than taxpayer-funded DoD marketing gimmicks,” they said.

And a 2008 New York Times investigation revealed that the retired military officers who serve as “military analysts” on many news programs oftentimes parroted administration talking points in exchange for special briefings and access to administration officials, which many of them used to advance their own business interests by pursuing government defense contracts.

As Reason Magazine’s Eric Boehm argued in a pointed criticism, “To be fair, the Department of Defense’s PR team has a tough job. They have to sell the American public on the value of foreign military interventions (something most Americans generally oppose) and have to spin the bombings of hospitals and the droning of innocent civilians at wedding parties as being in the best interest of America’s defense – or at least as something other than war crimes.”

It is bad enough that the government spends our own money in ways with which many taxpayers would disagree, but it is a double slap in the face when it uses those hard-earned dollars to pat itself on the back for these infringements or tries to manipulate our opinions and behavior.

Most of these “prediction markets” are based overseas because, useful as they are, American law calls them “illegal gambling.”

So producer Maxim Lott and I converted European betting into an easy to understand website, Electionbettingodds.com, and I’ve come to trust it. Again and again, betting had been more accurate than pundits and polls – until this election.

I’m not the only one who got it wrong. The Huffington Post’s statistical model gave Clinton a 98 percent chance of winning. The prestigious Princeton Election Consortium gave Clinton a 99 percent chance.

People just lie to pollsters when they think the pollster will sneer at them if they say they’re voting for someone smugly described as racist and sexist.

This was the second time this year that betting markets were wrong.

Most bettors thought Brexit would

never happen – people in Britain would vote to stay in the European Union. Again, British voters lied to pollsters because they were embarrassed to admit they would vote for Brexit after months of the elite telling them they were xenophobes and racists if they wanted a change.

Relying on the betting markets, I also wrote that it was sad that freedom-loving senators such as Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson lost to command-and-control bureaucrats such as Russ Feingold.

Oops, wrong again.

But the prediction markets are right most of the time.

Consider what happened early in this year’s Republican primary.

Ben Carson surged to first place in polls, but the bettors knew better.

They never gave him more than a 9 percent chance. In 2012, when Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich and then Herman Cain surged to first place in polls, prediction markets correctly said Mitt Romney would win. In 2008, bettors correctly predicted results in every state but two. In 2012, it was every state but one.

The markets even predicted when Saddam Hussein would be captured.

Right before his hideout was found, the odds on that date tripled in price.

Somehow, people with skin in the game pay more attention and intuit the right outcome.

Even last week, when bettors were wrong, the betting odds still adjusted faster than pundits on TV did.

The bettors saw what was happening and quickly hedged their bets, while many in the media – mostly Clinton supporters – still clung to their failed expectations.

My failure won’t make me abandon prediction markets and go back to trusting pundits or opinion polls – or internet commenters who had fun trashing me: “Dewey beats Truman ... oh wait.”

“I can’t laugh enough at this article.”

“I liked Stossel ... but he is as clueless as the liberal media.”

I sure was. But I will still trust prediction markets over everything else.

There is wisdom in crowds, especially crowds that put their own money on the line.

Trump should flatter Putin, not embrace him On Jan. 20, President-elect Donald J. Trump will start carrying out his agenda. How does he expect to turn his promises into policy? Do his plans make sense? If not, what should he do? Finally, given the political realities of Washington, what’s most likely to happen? This is part of a series of editorials that try to answer these questions.

What he says he’ll do: “There’s nothing that I can think of that I’d rather do than have Russia friendly as opposed to the way they are right now,” Trump said in July. He’s

expressed admiration for President Vladimir Putin and said he’d consider lifting sanctions imposed on Russia for its incursions into Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. And he wants to forge common cause with Russia in Syria to fight the Islamic State. On the other hand, he’s also threatened to shoot down Russian fighters that buzz U.S. Navy ships.

Does that make sense? Russian cooperation is essential to everything from nuclear nonproliferation and counterterrorism to climate change.

But lifting Ukraine sanctions and

recognizing the annexation of Crimea would embolden Putin, scare Europe, and give China a freer hand in the South China Sea. Cooperating more closely with Russia in Syria would just advance its strategic goals while making the U.S. complicit in the war crimes committed by Putin and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

What he ought to do: Flatter Putin.

Meet with him. Hear what he has to say on Syria. Then remember all the failed U.S. “resets” with Russia under Putin’s leadership and quietly hew to policies that protect the

territorial integrity of other nations, safeguard freedom and human rights, and advance shared interests where possible.

The most likely outcome: Any bromance between Trump and Putin will remain skin-deep. Mounting concern about Russia within the Republican Party, both in Congress and from some of Trump’s closest advisers, will prevent the lifting of sanctions or the recognition of Crimea’s annexation. And Trump’s plans for a military buildup will rile Russia.

I was so dumb last week.

I wrote my column Tuesday – before election results were in. I assumed Hillary Clinton would be president-elect.

I looked so stupid.

On Facebook, commenters pounced: You owe Trump an apology. I’m sorry for the lies you continued about him. You were never fair.

You’re nothing but another left-wing mouthpiece. You’re a washed up, anti-American gutless TV host.

I was wrong because I trusted the bettors.

That’s usually not dumb. The best predictor of things has been betting markets. They are more accurate because they reflect the wisdom of crowds. Crowds can be an ignorant mob, but crowds do have wisdom.

When contestants are stumped, they may ask the audience for help or an expert. The experts are often brilliant specialists. The audience – well, they are the kind of people who wait in line in the rain to watch a game show. NEXT-LEVEL OPTION Barbs’ defense will count on experience to slow Wolves’ high-scoring option attack

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – For the past two weeks, the DeKalb football team has seen an option offense and vanquished it.

When the No. 7 Barbs head to Crystal Lake to face No. 2 Prairie Ridge in a Class 6A semifinal at 1 p.m. today, they’ll face an option offense for the third week in a row – but they haven’t faced one quite like this before.

The Wolves are averaging 49.9 points a game, and have triggered the running clock in every game since Week 3.

Where both Antioch and CaryGrove – the Barbs’ past two opponents – featured a back as the main ball carrier, the Wolves (12-0) are powered by junior quarterback Samson Evans, who has rushed for 1,708 yards and 35 touchdowns this year.

“They’re more double-option heavy, like to have their quarterback carry the football a little more,” DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said. “There’s still the possibility of some triple-option stuff.”

The winner will advances to the championship game at 1 p.m. Nov. 26 against St. Laurence or Sacred Heart-Griffin.

With the Wolves not really involved in a close game since early September, Evans hasn’t been called upon to pass much. But he’s completed 27 of 48 passes for 752 yards and 13 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Tight end Austen Ferbet has been the top target, with 17 catches, 462 yards and nine scores.

Prairie Ridge coach Chris Schremp said Samson, Ferbet and the Wolves’ offense are underrated when it comes to throwing the ball.

“There’s this misconception (that) we can’t throw the ball,” Schremp said. “We have a pretty darn good tight end who’s caught a lot of pass-

Weckler said his team is going in with the mindset of an underdog – but not that they’re playing an unwinnable game.

The Wolves have been demolishing foes left and right, including thrashing Lake Forest, 71-7, last week in the quarterfinals.

But Weckler said his team’s 35-21 win over Cary-Grove last week is only one reason for optimism. The Wolves beat Cary-Grove, 26-14, in the regular season. He added that the Barbs have faced undefeated teams this year – they lost 4241 to Sterling, which was undefeated at the time in Week 9,

and they beat Antioch, which was 10-0, in the second round by a score of 36-3.

“Our kids are pretty focused on the game at hand,” Weckler said. “Obviously, Prairie Ridge is undefeated, ranked No. 1, put up 40, 60, 70 points. So there’s nothing we can do as a coaching staff or as players to think we’re going to play in the state championship game. (Our focus) is 100 percent on Prairie Ridge.

They’ve earned that respect, but at the same time, for us, we’ve gone against undefeated teams this year. We’ve gone against teams that have been competitive against them in Cary-Grove, So it gives us a little bit of confidence that we can compete against a team like this.”

DeKalb defensive end Dwayne Lacey said the team

has been studying Prairie Ridge, and facing option offenses the past two weeks helps, as well.

“We practice against it a lot and we’re more familiar with it,” Lacey said. “It makes us more aware and more familiar.”

The Barbs actually have faced the option offenses of three playoff teams – Antioch and Cary-Grove the past two weeks, plus Carmel’s in Week 2. The Barbs won all three games and allowed an average of 280.3 yards and 11.3 points a game.

It doesn’t mean what they’ve seen in those weeks is what they’ll see today.

“When you say option, teams have different forms of the option and just different styles,” Schremp said. “I think we do things different than

Antioch and Cary. Some of it is the same, yeah. But it’s the same but different. It’s a weird answer, but it’s the best I got.

Each team in the option does their own thing, and they haven’t seen our option yet.”

Although the Prairie Ridge offense has put up a lot of points this year, it’s not as if the Barbs are incapable of scoring. They’re averaging 37.7 points a game, largely behind the passing game and quarterback Derek Kyler.

He’s thrown for 1,959 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. Cole Tucker has been his top target with 52 catches, 842 yards and 14 scores.

“We feel pretty good; they are a good team, undefeated going into the year and play in a tough conference,” Kyler said. “But we feel pretty good going in.”

Schremp said keeping the ball away from DeKalb is his team’s best weapon for dealing with its offense.

“We somehow have to try and contain DeKalb’s passing attack,” Schremp said. “That’s the first thing that jumps out is how well they can throw the ball downfield. It’s not something you can stop, you just have to slow it and contain it.

Hopefully, we can continue to run the football like we’ve done and continue our winning formula.”

The Barbs have scored five touchdowns in each of their first three playoff games, which Weckler said is a sign his team is peaking.

“We’re getting to the point where we’re hitting our stride offensively,” Weckler said.

“We’ve always been able to put points up on the board, but now we’re able to put some points on the board against some very good, very quality defenses that haven’t been giving up a lot of points. That has to do with our confidence and the precision of what we do in our scheme.”

Only one will get to play for the big prize.

The No. 13-seeded Sycamore football team is coming off a dramatic victory over previously undefeated Sterling, and No. 7 Vernon Hills has put together a dominant postseason on defense as the two teams clash in a Class 5A state semifinal at 2 p.m. today at Engh Field in Sycamore.

“You prepare, and when you get on the field and the environment, you just have to adapt in-game in games like this,” said Sycamore defensive back Abraham Lesniewski, who had two interceptions in the Spartans’ 29-22 overtime win over Sterling in the quarterfinals. “The stakes are so much higher because the prize is so much closer. If you don’t adapt fast enough, you see it walking away.”

Neither team has made a state championship football game. The Cougars (9-3) are making their first trip to the semifinals since first fielding a team in 2000, while Sycamore (8-4) is making it’s fourth trip to the final four – its last coming in 2013, when the Spartans lost to Montini.

Sycamore also lost in the semifinals in 1976 and 1978 – both defeats against Darnall, now known as Geneseo.

Today’s winner will face the winner of No. 1 Peoria (11-1) and No. 3 Morris (10-2), which play at 3 p.m. today in Morris.

The Cougars have shown a tough defense this season, allowing more than 21 points in a game only once. In the playoffs, they’ve been even better – allowing only six points, a touchdown in garbage time in the 56-6 firstround victory over Chicago Urban Prep-Bronzeville. Vernon Hills is allowing 11.3 points a game, which includs losses against bigger schools. The three losses all were on the road, falling 21-14 to Wheeling (Class 6A), 17-10 at Maine West (Class 7A) and 14-9 at Highland Park (Class 7A).

According to the Spartans’ coaches and players, the Cougars play a spread-style attack

on offense similar to Chicago Solorio Academy, which Sycamore beat, 42-21, in the first round of the playoffs.

Expecting a large crowd for a game that features the highest stakes, Ryan credited games against DeKalb at Huskie Stadium as experience playing in raucous situations.

For Sycamore senior quarterback Ty Sulaver, a key will be maintaining emotions on the big stage.

“You just have to think of it as a normal game,” said Sulaver, who has thrown for 1,831 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. “That’s what I think of it as. There’s going to be a lot more people, I assume, but it’s just another game for me.”

For the Spartans, a trip to the semifinals is the latest experience in a season that stumbled out of the gate. After four games, the Spartans were 1-3, and players said part of the reason was that they were trying to do too much. Ryan said there was a lot of “soul-searching” after a 38-6 loss at Sterling in the season opener.

Slowly but surely, the Spartans charged back. They beat Rochelle in the regular-season finale to sneak into the playoffs and rattled off three consecutive postseason wins, all as the lower-seed – 42-21 over No. 4 Solorio Academy, 26-14 over No. 12 Rochelle, and 29-22 over No. 1 Sterling.

“It’s everybody coming together, and that’s when we started to click,” Lesniewski said. “When we stopped trying to do somebody’s job and focused on our own job and trusting the guy next to us.”

This year’s team is looking to win it.

A year after being the outright MAC regular-season champions, the No. 2seeded Huskies begin tournament play in a semifinal against Ohio at 7:30 p.m. today at Victor E. Court.

“We know what the mission is,” NIU coach Ray Gooden said of the tournament, which will send the champion to the NCAA tournament. “We don’t need to reiterate it every second. We know what it is.”

Top-seeded Miami (Ohio) plays Bowling Green today in the other semifinal.

Despite the impressive regular season for the Huskies, who have won 18 of their past 19 matches, Gooden said his team still hasn’t yet hit its ceiling.

“We can still learn and get better,” Gooden said. “We have the record, but we haven’t played our best volleyball.

We can still get better. We don’t feel like we peaked.”

Giants boast impressive ‘D,’ Manning Bears try to bounce back from dreadful showing vs. Bucs

The New York Giants are hot right now, having won their past four and sitting at 6-3 in the NFC East with the third-best record in the NFC, including a 4-1 mark BEARS at home.

But this is the NFL, and on any given Sunday ...

Although the Giants are hot, it’s worth noting that with the exception of their Week 4 24-10 loss to the Vikings at Minnesota, the Giants’ other eight games have been decided by an average of 3.8 points, six by five points or less, and all eight by no more than one score.

The only offensive category in which the Giants are top 10 or better is passing yards, in which they’re ninth.

They are 24th in points scored.

The Giants set out to buy a defense during the offseason and shopped pretty well as they now are just 16th in total defense, seventh against the run, best in the NFL in the red zone and 11th in points allowed.

The Bears’ challenges start with Eli Manning, as good a big-game quarterback as there is in the league, maybe one of the best of all-time, but also a guy who can be average when you least expect it.

Manning is completing 64.3 percent of his passes, averaging 7.1 yards a pass and has a pedestrian 87.6 passer rating, but he and receiver Odell Beckham Jr. have become a dynamic duo.

The Giants offense’s Achilles’ heel is their ground game – 31st in the league, 29th in average gain per rush – and inability to protect the football.

New York is 30th in the NFL in turnover ratio. It has turned the ball over 18 times, including 10 interceptions by Manning.

As well as they’ve protected Manning, the Giants’ offensive line is average at best. The main reason it struggles on the ground and how the Bears’ front seven attacks Ereck Flowers, Marshall Newhouse, Weston

The Giants spent a fortune on defensive end Olivier Vernon, defensive tackle Damon Harrison and cornerback Janoris Jenkins to reshape their defense, and it’s worked so far.

Vernon only has three sacks, but he also has five tackles for loss and “Snacks” Harrison is arguably the best run-stuffing tackle in the game.

New York also is benefiting from Jason Pierre-Paul playing 60 minutes each week in a contract year, and although he struggles to wrap up with his bad hand – only 1.5 sacks to date – he still is the team’s fourth-leading tackler.

Clearly the Bears’ softest spot on offense has been at tackle, and if tackles Charles Leno Jr. and Mike Adams don’t play their best games of the season, QB Jay Cutler and RB Jordan Howard might have no chance.

Jenkins has given the Giants the lock-down cover corner they were looking for, which could spell trouble for WR Cameron Meredith. Landon Collins, the Giants’ second-round pick last year, is having an All-Pro season at safety.

The Giants’ coverage units are awful – 31st on kickoffs and 26th on punts.

Deonte Thompson and Eddie Royal could be difference-makers this week if the defense can keep Manning and Beckham in check.

The Giants’ placekicker will look very familiar to Bears fans, as Robbie Gould will be in his fourth game as a Giant with only one field goal attempt so far, but clearly looking to outkick the mediocre-to-date Connor Barth.

CALGARY, Alberta – Marian Hossa’s controversial goal with 2:23 left in the third period lifted the Blackhawks to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

Artemi Panarin’s hard shot was deflected by Chad Johnson’s glove high in the air, and as the puck came down behind him, Hossa knocked it in. Although replays showed it might have been a high stick by Hossa, Flames coach Glen Gulutzan had used his timeout earlier in the period and was unable to challenge the call.

Ryan Hartman and Brent Seabrook also scored for the Hawks, who have points in 12 of their past 13 (10-1-2) games. Corey Crawford stopped 28 shots.

Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan scored for Calgary, and Johnson had 21 saves.

Chemo side effects lessened Dear Dr K: My mother was diagnosed with cancer and soon will begin chemotherapy.

I’d like to understand how chemotherapy is given, and how it fights cancer.

Dear Reader: Chemotherapy uses drugs that kill cancerous cells, but only injure healthy cells. To understand chemotherapy, you need to understand what cancer is and what is different about cancer cells.

Our body contains 13 trillion cells. They all started from one cell, a cell that kept dividing. One cell became two, two became four, and so on. But the cells kept dividing in a carefully controlled manner. Early in our lives (even before we were born), they had to keep dividing so that we would grow larger.

After we are fully formed adults, some cells need to divide to replace dying old cells with younger ones.

In contrast, cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Chemotherapy (anti-cancer) drugs kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing and dividing. The drugs reach almost all parts of the body. This helps to kill cancer cells that have spread from the original site of the cancer.

Chemotherapy is the core treatment for some cancers. For other cancers, it is part of a larger strategy along with radiation and/or surgery. Chemotherapy often requires a combination of two or more different anti-cancer drugs. Cancer specialists (oncologists) design chemotherapy plans based on the cancer being treated and how far the cancer has spread.

Cancer chemotherapy may be designed to: • cure the cancer; • prevent the cancer from recurring after surgery; • prevent the cancer from spreading to other organs; • decrease the size of a tumor to make surgery easier; • shrink the size of incurable cancer to

help relieve symptoms.

Chemotherapy drugs can be given in a hospital, clinic, doctor’s office or at home.

For most people, a bag filled with the liquid drug is attached to a tube that is inserted into a vein. The drug slowly drips into the patient’s body. Sometimes the patient is able to swallow a pill instead, or get chemotherapy through an injection. People can receive chemotherapy daily, weekly or monthly.

Unfortunately, in addition to attacking cancer cells, chemotherapy drugs also injure normal, healthy cells. This can cause many side effects.

Many anti-cancer drugs, for example, affect the production of blood cells. This includes red blood cells that carry oxygen and platelets that help blood clot. Chemotherapy also inhibits the production of white blood cells that fight infection. That’s why a common side effect of chemotherapy is increased susceptibility to serious infections.

Other common side effects include fatigue, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, hair loss and rashes. Your mother’s doctor can help manage many of these side effects.

In recent years, medical scientists have developed new treatments. Some target the chemical changes in cancerous cells that cause them to grow uncontrollably. Others harness the body’s immune system to attack cancerous cells. For certain types of cancers, these new approaches appear more effective, and less toxic, than chemotherapy.

In less than a month, I am being married to my same-sex partner of 4½ years.

My brother and I spend time together at least once a month – if not more – and he always has given me time with my nephews. Our conversations tend to be centered around lighthearted subjects and the occasional funny joke on our parents. Unfortunately, having heart-to-hearts has not worked well for us. He’s five years older and very religious.

I have been out to my brother since I was 19, and the conversation didn’t go well. He is refusing to come to my wedding, and I see this as the beginning of my having to choose my partner over him and my nephews.

Of course, I will want to spend Christmas with my wife – which will mean instead of being a family together, I no longer will have Christmas with my nephews. Any advice for a way to approach him, or to be at peace with the future of my family? – Sad Sister Dear Sad Sister: It’s time to have another heartto-heart talk with your brother. He has known about your sexual orientation, and yet you still are a part of his sons’ lives. Does he plan for that to change after your wedding? He may not, but if you ask that question, at least you will know where you and your fiancee stand.

Because he doesn’t plan to attend the wedding doesn’t necessarily mean you will be excluded from the family. However, if it does, I am sure you, like many other people, will find others who are willing to give you the emotional support you need. The loss should rightly be your brother’s, not your own.

Dear Abby: I’ve been thinking about dating a good friend I have known for five years. This is the single most common bidding sequence. South assumes that North will cover the spade suit, and North assumes that South will coast home easily with a combined 28-30 points between them.

South starts with seven top tricks: four diamonds and three clubs. He can easily establish three more winners in hearts. His only concern is the spade suit. Well, there is no hurry to put up dummy’s king. That can wait until the second round of the suit.

Now the spotlight falls on East.

He knows that when the lead is fourth-highest, he should apply the Rule of Eleven. Seven from 11 is four.

So there are four spades higher than the seven in the North, East and South hands combined. Lo and behold, East can see all four: the kingnine on the board and the ace-jack in his hand. So South has no spade higher than the seven.

This would tempt some Easts to win the first trick with the jack -- irreparably blocking the suit. A stalker will win with the ace and return the jack, trusting his partner to overtake with the queen to drive out dummy’s king. Then, when West gets in with his heart ace, he cashes the rest of the spades for down one.
