Feds: Barrier to gorilla exhibit POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS entered by 3-year-old ineffective

The Associated PRess CINCINNATI – A barrier separating Cincinnati Zoo visitors from a gorilla exhibit wasn’t in compliance with standards when a 3-year-old boy slipped inside, resulting in the shooting death of an endangered gorilla named Harambe, federal inspectors concluded.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection report, obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, also stated the zoo’s dangerous-animal response team properly followed procedures after visitors called 911 on May 28 to report a child in the gorilla enclosure.

A team member concluded the child was in “life-threatening danger.”

The death of the 17-year-old male western lowland gorilla led to mourning around the globe and a storm of criticism and unending social media attention.

The zoo quickly made the barrier taller and added nylon mesh and surveillance cameras. It said there had been no previous problems in the Gorilla World exhibit’s 38year history and its barriers were always found compliant in earlier federal inspections, including in April.

The federal investigation is continuing and could lead to fines or other disciplinary action.

The department’s animal welfare arm confirmed the zoo’s barrier system had been considered to be in compliance during earlier inspections.

Department spokeswoman Tanya Espinosa said the barriers must restrict public contact from the gorillas.

“It became apparent on May 28 that the barrier was no longer effective,” Espinosa said via email. “The Cincinnati Zoo took swift and comprehensive corrective action in response.”

Zoo Director Thane Maynard said the zoo will continue to work with authorities to ensure its exhibits meet or exceed standards.

“We remain committed to visitor and animal safety,” Maynard said.

The Department of Agriculture inspectors said in a report dated June 6 there had been “some slack” in wire cables in the barrier that could have been “manipulated to an eight-inch gap.” Beyond the barrier were bushes and other landscaping that was 18- to 24-inches tall, followed by a 15-foot drop-off into a moat.

The report stated visitors had notified a keeper and called 911 to report a child was in the exhibit and the keeper activated the zoo’s emergency response.

A member of the Dangerous Animal Response Team arrived in about nine minutes, the report stated. It said Harambe didn’t respond to attempts to return him to the gorilla holding area after making contact with the boy, dragging the boy by the leg in the shallow moat water and again on the ground.

“The DART team member determined the child’s life to be in imminent, life-threatening danger and shot the gorilla with a single gunshot and the gorilla died instantly,” the report stated.

The boy, who had slipped away from his mother, recovered without major injury.

Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters concluded after an investigation that no charges were warranted.

Animal welfare activists and other gorilla fans expressed anger at Harambe’s death, and it became the subject of countless memes and popular culture references. The zoo recently reactivated its Twitter account after suspending it because of hacks by critics.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Foundation said it hopes people will remember the gorilla’s death.

“Harambe’s death was as preventable as it was tragic, just as it’s tragic to deny any wild animal everything that’s natural and important to him for the sake of selling tickets to a zoo exhibit,” said Brittany Peet, a PETA Foundation director.

AFSCME WORKERS PICKET IN DEKALB Local union members join statewide protest of Rauner’s plan to impose contract

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local members of the state’s largest public-employee union picketed Thursday outside of a government office in DeKalb, joining demonstrations at 120 state government worksites across Illinois.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents about 38,000 state employees, organized the demonstrations.

Local union representatives estimated there are about 3,000 AFSCME members in DeKalb County, including about 1,000 Northern Illinois University employees.

A state labor board ruled Tuesday that contract negotiations between the two sides are at an impasse. On Wednesday, Rauner’s administration said it intends to implement a 40-hour workweek, instead of 37.5 hours, and a mer-

About 40 members of AFSCME Local 448 held signs and chanted in front of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services office at 760 Peace Road, DeKalb, on Thursday.

“The governor wants to paint us as greedy state workers, but that’s not who we are. We are the worker bees. We serve the citizens of Illinois,” AFSCME member Christine Gardner said as cars and trucks drove past on Peace Road. “The governor has dictated terms. We want to negotiate.”

Gardner said that like other DeKalb County residents, AFSCME members live, work and spend money here.

The union said Rauner wants to impose a four-year wage freeze and require employees to pay twice as much for health insurance. Highly sensitive to privatization of government work, AFSCME also maintains that Rauner wants to eliminate “standards that prevent unac-

countable outsourcing of public service.”

That’s a big concern to Department of Children and Family Services workers such as Gardner. Much of the agency’s work already has been outsourced, she said. She worries that additional outsourcing will affect the services the agency provides.

Rauner estimates his plan will save Illinois $3 billion over four years.

Gardner said she and other workers understand the state’s financial situation and expect that any agreement with the state would include a wage freeze. However, she said, AFSCME workers didn’t get the same offer as other state-worker unions. The Teamsters agreed to a wage freeze, but they didn’t have to pay more for health care, Gardner said.

On Wednesday, Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said it was the same deal the administration had OK’d with 18 smaller state-worker unions.

AFSCME plans to appeal the labor board ruling in court. If they lose, workers could vote on whether to strike.

Some of the cars and trucks that passed the picket honked in support.

Sara Dorner, an AFSCME representative for DeKalb County-area workers, said the public supports the union.

“The anti-union sentiment is from the governor,” she said. “It’s not from the people. Collective bargaining is the American way.”

What happens with AFSCME could affect what health benefits the state offers to other government workers, even those who don’t belong to a union, Dorner said.

The last contract expired in June 2015, about six months after Rauner, a private-equity investor whose campaign featured anti-union remarks, took office.

Winter temperatures, snow expected to start soon

DeKALB – The warm weather Illinois has been experiencing late into the fall is expected to end this weekend with a chance of snow showers beginning early Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service predicts a slight chance of rain showers from midnight Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, with a 20 percent chance of snow showers before noon with a 20- to 25mph wind and a high near 39 degrees.

Gilbert Sebenste, a Northern Illinois University meteorologist, said DeKalb should see a band of rain showers Friday afternoon before the evening’s cold front.

“One thing is for sure, the weather will have a drastic change Friday night, with some changes early Friday,” he said. “(Thursday) might be the last nice day with 70-degree weather.”

He said last year’s 60-degree weather around Christmas time is not likely to be repeated, and temperatures for next week should reach highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s.

“If you have any golfing or leaf-raking to do outside, I would do it before late in the afternoon on Friday,” Sebenste said. “That’s when the reality check gets cashed, and we start getting seasonal weather.”

Sebenste said snow accumulation is not likely this weekend because of the wind, and the pavement temperature will stay well above freezing.

However, road departments are keeping watch on the changing weather.

Mark Espy, DeKalb assistant public works director, said the city is still using eight of 14 trucks for leaf collection, and with the potential for flurries rather than a full snowstorm, he doesn’t expect needing to switch over the fleet just yet.

“We’ll monitor the situation,” Espy said. “It’s looking like we’ll have latenight flurries that you’ll have to stay up from 2 to 6 a.m. just to see. It’s nothing substantial yet, but that can always change.”

works director, said the remaining six trucks would be immediately available if salting or plowing becomes necessary this weekend.

“Until we have significant snow,

we’re not really preparing,” Holdeman said Wednesday. “Pavement temperature is part of the equation, and it’s 60-plus degrees right now. It will take several cold nights for the surface temperature to drop to 32.”

Espy said the city has 800 tons of salt in storage, and it has a contract to purchase 3,500 tons this winter at $49.64 per ton.

Despite the harsh winter in 2014, the city bases its winter planning on trends of five years or more, Espy said.

“Should we have a lighter winter this year, that’s great, but we won’t be unprepared,” Espy said. “We stay consistent for an average to above average winter.”

Nathan Schwartz, DeKalb County engineer, said the county’s salt bins

are full from last year, with about 1,500 tons left. The county’s salt price this year will be $68.61 per ton.

“A lot of times, once we get into our salt supply, we’ll top it off after each storm,” Schwartz said. “In case the river freezes, or people order a lot of salt, you never know.”

Schwartz said the county is responsible for nearly 400 lane miles, but some conditions, such as high crosswinds, are not ideal for salting and may require plowing instead. A liquid anti-icing chemical is also used on bridges and elevated roads to prevent them from freezing, he said.

“It really is a judgment call on every single storm,” Schwartz said. “There are many factors.”

Winters said police received multiple calls reporting the explosions at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, and some officers heard loud noises as well.

A citation was issued to Jordan Way, of the 500 block of Brickville, after debris and black gunpowder burn marks

were found on the street near his home, Winters said.

Winters said police were unsure of the type of fireworks used, but fireworks that would cause such a loud disturbance are in violation of the city’s ordinance.

“At this time of year, it’s unusual,” Winters said. “Fireworks that were this loud, obviously, are prohibited, but also they are dangerous to the people shooting them off and people in the neighborhood.”

Born: June 20, 1925 Died: November 15, 2016 Betty J. Kohler, 91, of Sycamore died Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Kishwaukee Hospital.

She was born June 20, 1925 in Beloit, WI, the daughter of Rupert and Alice (Buckland) Baxter. She married Donald J. Kohler on December 19, 1951 in DeKalb.

Betty was a graduate of the DeKalb Twp. High School, Class of 1943. She was a volunteer at Kishwaukee Hospital for many years.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Donald; three children, Susan (Anthony) Coldagelli; Mark (Margaret) Kohler and Rick (Deborah) Kohler; nine grandchidren, Matthew (Sarah), Scott (Elizabeth), Daniel (Dana) and Brian Coldagelli, Amy (Harrison) Frederick, Jennifer, Katherine, Grant and Paige Kohler; and four great grandchildren, Norah, Walter, Isla and Agnes Coldagelli.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Larry; and two sisters, May and Marjorie in infancy.

Services for Betty will be private.

Born: January 30, 1926 Died: November 16, 2016

Eleanor M Lange, 90,of Genoa, formerly of Hanover Park, passed away on November 16, 2016.

She was born on January 30, 1926 the daughter of Lloyd and Gertrude Scott. Knitting and Crocheting were her hobbies, and she was an avid Chicago “Cubs” Fan. Eleanor will be deeply missed.

Survivors include three children, Cheryle (Donald) Smith of Hampshire, IL, Richard(Cecilia) Lange of Genoa, IL and John Lange of Genoa; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and fifteen great great grand children; a brother, Melvin (Carla) Scott; along with many nieces, nephews and family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald J. Lange in 2002; a

granddaughter, Donna Benton 2001; and four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held on Monday November 21, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park. Visitation will be on Monday from 9:00 AM until the time of service.

Born: April 4, 1928 Died: November 7, 2016

Robert Earl Petersen, passed away in his home on November 7, 2016 after a brief illness.

He was born to Anna and Charles Petersen in DeKalb, Illinois on April 4, 1928. He attended DeKalb high school where he played on both the football and basketball teams. After graduation he enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He attended Colorado College where he met and married the love of his life, Doris. Shortly after graduation Robert and Doris moved to Rockford, Illinois where they lived and raised six children together. He is predeceased by his five brothers and sisters and his eldest daughter, Janie Petersen.

Robert is greatly loved and missed by his wife of 64 years, Doris; children, Daniel (Cindy) Petersen, Kristine (Andy) Voigt, Karen Alexander, Kathryn (Drew) Wickham, William (Sally) Petersen; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will remain “sweet-as-ever” to his family.

SYCAMORE – It will be up to voters to decide if they want to pay more in property taxes to fund public health services in DeKalb County.

The DeKalb County Board approved a measure to put the property tax referendum on the April 4 ballot.

The proposed referendum would bring in about $500,000 a year through a property tax of $9.57 per $100,000 of equalized assessed value, officials have said. That means the owner of a $150,000 home would pay about $15 more each year to the county to fund public health services.

Some board members didn’t want the measure to be put on the ballot.

That group included County Board Vice Chairman Tracy Jones, R-District 1.

“I’d just like to say that I don’t think there’s really any doubt that the need is there,” he said. “... I’m just not in favor of another tax increase.”

Jones also said he felt that if the board put the referendum on the ballot it would appear to voters that the

board supported it.

Others disagreed. In response to concerns that putting the measure on the ballot was akin to the board endorsing a tax increase, Paul Stoddard, D-District 9, said he has faith in local residents to “vote their conscience” without being swayed by what the board does.

“I seriously doubt we have that much ability, the 24 of us, to tell the citizens of the county how to vote or what to think,” he said. “I trust them to make that decision.”

John Gudmunson, R-District 11, said he didn’t think the public has “the stomach” for another property tax.

Ultimately, the board voted, 18-6, to put approve putting the question to voters.

The DeKalb County Health Department has been using reserve funds for the past three years to cover operating costs to maintain existing services.

That practice could only continue for a few more years before the reserves are depleted and the department would either need to find more revenue or cut services.

STATE Officials investigate cause of deadly gas explosion “The impact of this blast was tremendous and that caused some serious, serious damage.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CANTON – Authorities on Thursday were investigating the cause of a gas explosion that rocked downtown homes and businesses in a central Illinois community, shattering glass and cracking interior walls in nearby buildings and killing one person and injuring several others.

The blast Wednesday evening in Canton, which is 150 miles southwest of Chicago, happened while utility workers were trying to fix a gas leak that a contractor apparently caused while installing a fiber-optic wire, officials said.

“The impact of this blast was tremendous and that caused some serious, serious damage,” the city’s police chief, Rick Nichols, said at a news conference Thursday.

More than 50 buildings were damaged, including three that were condemned.

Ameren Illinois said its crew had turned off the gas and was beginning to make repairs when the explosion happened. Nichols said investigators are still trying to determine what ignited

Illinois workers protest Rauner’s planned labor deal

SPRINGFIELD – State workers across Illinois put pressure on Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner to negotiate in demonstrations at 120 worksites.

The demonstrations Thursday were organized by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which represents about 38,000 state employees.

In Springfield, workers chanted “2-4-6-8, Rauner should negotiate.” In downtown Rockford, about 75 workers picketed.

A state labor board ruled Tuesday that contract negotiations are stalled.

On Wednesday, Rauner’s administration said it intends to implement a 40-hour workweek, instead of 37.5 hours, and a merit-pay system as soon as possible.

2 men accused of stealing from state treasurer’s vault

SPRINGFIELD – A former employee of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office and his friend are accused of stealing jewelry and gold from the agency’s unclaimed property vault.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser said former employee Roosevelt Smith and Ademola Adeniji face felony theft charges.

Milhiser said the treasurer’s office discovered the thefts after upgrading security measures and finding that items had gone missing from 2012 to this year.

According to WTAX radio, Smith is being held on $500,000 bail, and Adeniji was released on bond and is due in court Dec. 29.

Smith worked in the treasurer’s office for 12 years.

Ill. unemployment rate rises to 5.6 percent in October

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security said the statewide unemployment rate edged up to 5.6 percent in October despite a modest increase in jobs.

The department said Thursday in its monthly report on statewide unemployment that the jobless rate increased from 5.5 percent in September.

The national unemployment rate in October was 4.9 percent.

The increase in Illinois’ unemployment rate ended a five-month run during which it either dropped or held steady.

According to the state report, Illinois added a net 2,200 jobs in October.

Professional and business services firms, government and manufacturing all added jobs for the month.

Construction jobs fell by 3,300 in October and trade, transportation and utility companies lost 1,000 jobs.

Department Director Jeff Mays said Illinois’ recovery from the recession continues to be slow.

Schock’s arraignment on corruption charges set

SPRINGFIELD – Former Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock will be arraigned next month on charges alleging that he schemed to profit personally from his government job.

Schock was scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 21 on theft of government funds, fraud, making false statements and filing false tax returns charges.

However, Schock’s attorneys asked for a delay, saying an arraignment that day would interfere with a planned international business trip by the Peoria Republican.

U.S. District Judge Sue E. Myerscough on Wednesday rescheduled Schock’s arraignment to Dec. 12.

Federal prosecutors did not object to the change.

The 52-page indictment handed up last week alleged that Schock spent government funds to redecorate his Washington office and asked the U.S. House to reimburse him for nearly $30,000 worth of camera equipment. It also accused him of running up a $140,000 mileage tab over six years.

Source: Trump offers Flynn national security adviser job The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump offered former military intelligence chief Michael Flynn the job of national security adviser as he began to build out his national security team Thursday, a senior Trump official said.

The move came as Trump made his most direct foray into foreign policy since the election, meeting with Japan’s prime minister.

Flynn, who served as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, has advised Trump on national security issues for months. As national security adviser, he would work in the White House and have frequent access to the president. The post does not require Senate confirmation.

The official wouldn’t say whether Flynn had accepted the job, which left open the possibility that the arrangement was not finalized.

The official was not authorized to discuss the offer publicly and insisted on anonymity.

Flynn, who turns 58 in December, built a reputation in the Army as an astute intelligence professional and a straight talker. He retired in 2014 and has been a fierce critic of President Barack Obama’s White House and Pentagon, taking issue with the administration’s approach to global affairs and fighting Islamic State militants.

Trump is a foreign policy novice and his early moves on national security are being closely watched by U.S allies and adversaries alike. He’s said to be considering a range of officials with varying degrees of experience to lead the State Department and Pentagon.

The president-elect held his first face-to-face

State needs labor deal it can afford

We wouldn’t like to hear our boss tell us that for the next four years our pay would be frozen and we’d have to pay double for health insurance.

We don’t expect 38,000 members of the state’s largest employee union to like it, either.

However, there are financial realities at play here, realities that any private-sector employee would have been forced to confront long ago.

Anyone working for a company with a multibillion-dollar budget deficit, which the state of Illinois has, should not expect a pay increase.

Any employer with a pension system underfunded by $120 billion would have been compelled to take actions to correct that situation long ago – including possibly eliminating the pension plan.

State workers said the governor has declined to negotiate with them and is making them out to be the bad guys in the situation.

But then, union leaders probably got used to dealing with governors such as Pat Quinn, who himself tried to stand against AFSCME but eventually ended up agreeing to continued raises for employees even as the state’s debts continued to mount.

State employee unions have fought any changes to the state’s pension system, demanded ever-higher wages and fought changes to employee benefits.

They simply can’t have everything. In the private sector, when an employer’s financial fortunes decline, their workers suffer.

Illinois’ finances have been in steady decline for years. Already, social service providers and the people they serve have been hurt, as have local governments and average taxpayers.

A wage freeze and increased benefits cost might be a bitter pill for union members, but this is the state of our state in 2016 – budgetless, billions in debt, with a pension system that is underfunded and unsustainable.

State workers are not being asked to close the budget hole through their sacrifice alone. The labor deal that AFSCME’s 38,000 members could be forced to accept would save the state an estimated $3 billion, Gov. Bruce Rauner’s office has said.

Illinois’ backlog of unpaid bills stood at more than $10 billion this week.

Our state is in crisis mode, although you wouldn’t know it by the nonchalance shown by some leaders, particularly the Democrats in charge of the state House and Senate, who seem content to appoint middlemen to committees rather than discuss serious compromise and reform.

Perhaps this contract will make it clear to union members just how dire the situation really is for our state. Maybe that will lead to some pressure on politicians to actually get something done so that state government – and its employees – can have a brighter future.

Eventually, even stuffy news organizations were willing to describe this behavior for what it was: sexism, for the timid, and misogyny, for those tired of the tap dance. We even saw some conversations about what such rhetoric was bringing out in men who saw in Trump the permission to say out loud what they’ve thought of us all along.

Many of us women dared to think that we, as a nation and an electorate, were finally willing to name the problem and confront it.

Then Trump won enough electoral votes, if not the popular vote, to be our next president.

Poof.

Now the analysis is all about the white working-class voters who supported him. They are not the only reason he won, but they are the convenient focus now for guilt-ridden journalists who failed to listen to an entire swath of America.

The new narrative is that we –

including people of color and women – must understand the anger of the white working class. It’s the economy, insist their shiny new defenders.

I do not doubt that many of these voters are, indeed, angry about what has happened to their jobs, their families and their communities.

They believe that Trump cares about them, which is yet another sin he has committed against the electorate.

However, I come from the white working class. I cherish my roots, but I caution against romanticizing them. We have always had our darker side, fueled by a fear of “the other,” which often includes women.

Yes, many – but not most – women voted for Trump. Disappointing, but not shocking. Finally, perhaps, we can lay to rest the fiction that all of us women are alike.

Hillary Clinton has lost, again.

Cue the collective relief in pundit-land. Sexism? Misogyny? So last week. We’re now supposed to pretend that patriotism requires that we unite behind the man who has made so clear his long disdain for us. If we dare to continue pointing this out as evidence for our distrust, we are “divisive” and “poor sports.”

The Democratic Party offers little comfort right now. All the potential names floated for the next chairman

of the Democratic National Committee are male. Ditto the names, so far, of potential challengers to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

Fascinating, this unwillingness even to pretend to care how that may look to us, the message we hear.

You had your chance, girls. Now step aside.

Fortunately, we have long memories, and we are not where we started this long presidential campaign.

A poem by the late Yosano Akiko, a Japanese writer and feminist, has been making the rounds. Written in 1911, it is titled “The Day the Mountains Move”:

The day the mountains move has come.

I speak, but no one believes me.

For a time the mountains have been asleep.

But long ago they all danced with fire.

It doesn’t matter if you believe this, my friends, as long as you believe: All the sleeping women are now awake and moving.

We are restless, but we are still here.

Trump and his free-trade disagreements Come Jan. 20, President-elect Donald J. Trump will start carrying out his agenda. How does he expect to turn his promises into policy? Do his plans make sense? If not, what should he do? Finally, given the political realities of Washington, what’s most likely to happen? This is part of a series of editorials that try to answer these questions.

What he said he’ll do: Trump said it’s over for unfair trade. He promises to kill the Trans-Pacific Partnership and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

He said he’ll confront China’s trade offenses with “every lawful presidential power,” bringing cases at the

World Trade Organization, declaring China a currency manipulator and, if necessary, imposing punitive tariffs. He’s said little about the proposed U.S.-EU trade deal, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, whose prospects were poor to begin with.

Does that make sense?

Free-trade pacts promote competition and growth, and raise living standards overall. TPP and NAFTA are complicated agreements, years in the making and not perfect in every respect – but they serve U.S. interests. China used to keep its currency undervalued to promote its exports, but that’s no longer true.

Trade does cause dislocation and makes some workers worse off, but the harm caused by the trade wars Trump might provoke would be vastly greater.

What he ought to do: He should let TPP go ahead, leave NAFTA alone and not pick trade fights with China or other partners. The best way to protect the victims of competition is with policies to support incomes and encourage investment in skills; more generous wage subsidies (such as the earned-income tax credit), better schools and vocational training, more help for workers relocating, lower barriers to small-business expansion (such as

overly strict occupational licensing), and a stronger safety net when all else fails.

The most likely outcome: It won’t be easy for Trump to walk back from his militant position. Checks and balances won’t help, because in trade there aren’t many. On the other hand, carrying out his threats – once it’s time to face the economic consequences – will be hard as well.

Cosmetic adjustments sold as big new deals and strong words with no action might be possible, with little harm done. The smart domestic-policy agenda will continue to be neglected, because it always is.

In the months leading up to the presidential election, the media coverage was full of references to the perils of running while female.

A few headlines from this fall: PBS: “The hidden sexism that could sway the election.”

The Atlantic: “Fear of a Female Candidate.”

Fortune: “Why Sexism Is So Central to This Presidential Race.”

NBC News: “Obama Says Sexism to Blame for Close Presidential Race.”

This narrative was fueled, in large part, by all the horrible things Donald Trump has said about women.

To refresh the astonishingly short memories among us: Trump said he’d look Rosie O’Donnell in that “fat, ugly face of hers” and tell her she was fired. As Megyn Kelly reminded us, he has called women he doesn’t like “fat pigs,” “dogs,” “slobs” and “disgusting animals.”

After Kelly asked Trump about this at the first Republican primary debate, he later described her as having “blood coming out of her wherever.”

About our gender, Trump has said, “You have to treat them like s---.” Weeks before the election, The Washington Post shared a video in which Trump, at my age of 59, bragged about getting away with

Sycamore will be featured in a one-hour special, “Unforgettable: Living with Alzheimer’s,” airing on WGN-TV at 6 p.m.

The couple will be interviewed by WGN health reporter Dina Bair.

Tom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014. In July, he was selected by the National Alzheimer’s Association to be the national spokesman and adviser. The Oestreichers have been active speaking to both caregiver groups and at patient advocacy events.

Language researcher seeking children participants

How do children between the ages of 3 and 12 learn new words? That is one question Northern Illinois University speech-language pathology assistant professor Allison Gladfelter is looking to answer with her current research study.

Gladfelter is seeking participants for her research study exploring how children with and without autism learn to say new words.

Participants will be scheduled for two or three sessions each lasting approximately one hour at NIU’s Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, 3100 Sycamore Road in DeKalb. It is possible to schedule all the sessions for the same day. Families will be compensated $10 an hour and the children get to pick out toys as prizes.

Gladfelter also will provide families a report of their child’s hearing, speech and language standardized testing scores.

The Sycamore Music Boosters received a grant of $4,000 from the Wurlitzer Foundation Fund through the DeKalb County Community Foundation to help support the 2016-17 Sycamore School District Elementary After-School Orchestra and Band Program.

Due to the lack of funding from the state of Illinois and the Sycamore School District budget cuts, this after-school program was in jeopardy. Having a weekly, after-school full rehearsal with combined students from all five elementary schools is the foundation of their musical training.

“When we were made aware of these cuts, the Sycamore Music Boosters had to do anything possible to continue this after-school program for the students,” Sycamore Music Boosters President Lisa Smith said in a news release.

“We prepared a grant request and are very thankful to the Wurlitzer Foundation and the DeKalb County Community Foundation for teaming with the Music Boosters to help us continue this very important program for our young music students.”

Fourth- and fifth-grade orchestra students and fifth-grade band students meet once a week to rehearse as an entire group.

Despite not having star player, team-minded Spartans preparing for state semis

The Sycamore football team doesn’t have a star.

Instead, the No. 13-seeded Spartans have used a sumof-all-parts mentality, with different players stepping up in different weeks and have used the team-model to springboard themselves to an impressive stretch of winning and a matchup against No. 7-seeded Vernon Hills in a Class 5A state semifinal at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sycamore.

“It might be for the reason that we don’t have one of those guys,” said senior defensive back Abraham Lesniewski, who had two interceptions in the Spartans’ 29-22 overtime win over No. 1 seed Sterling in the quarterfinals. “Everybody looks at us and thinks, ‘They don’t have a [Division I] commit. They don’t have an amazing player.

They’re not going to do well.

They started off 1-3.’ We kind of wanted to prove them all wrong.”

In the past, the Sycamore defense has had Ben Niemann, who helped lead the Spartans to the semifinals in 2013, and Nick Niemann, who was the Daily Chronicle Football Defensive Player of the Year in 2015. Both are playing for the University of Iowa.

Although there is no D-I level player on this Sycamore defense, coach Joe Ryan admits, the Spartans (8-4) have won seven out of their past eight games because of a strong play from the group.

After a 28-12 loss to DeKalb in Week 4 sent the Spartans to a 1-3 record, the defense hasn’t allowed more than three touchdowns in a game since.

Tight end Austen Ferbet scouted the area when his family was moving to McHenry County in the summer of 2015, looking for a good football team.

The two schools he visited were Prairie Ridge and C-G. Schremp had several players give Ferbet the tour of the school and talk about the program. Ferbet, who also plays linebacker this season, will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, next year and will play football. Army runs the option, so the transition for Ferbet should be a smooth one.

“When I got here, it was crazy how much more talented they were than my old school (in St. Louis),” Ferbet said. “It truly is about the coaching.

The coaching here is like no other place. [Schremp] is a blast. We get down to business a lot, but you can still have fun with him. He knows what he’s talking about.”

Samson Evans knew Schremp when he was in sixth grade and his older brother, Shane, was an offensive lineman for the Wolves. Samson was playing quarterback in the Junior Wolves program, which runs the same offense and defense Prairie Ridge runs. Schremp and his coaches frequently tutor the Junior Wolves coaches on their system.

Carter Evans, Samson’s eighthgrade brother, just quarterbacked his Junior Wolves team to its Super Bowl victory last week and someday might follow in his brother’s footsteps.

“It helps out a lot,” Samson said. “It just gets them ready for high school.”

It’s part of the consistency of which Schremp spoke. When everything from coaches to training to discipline to the feeder program is consistent, success follows. However, Schremp feels his program is about more than winning.

“We’re teaching the kids self-discipline and respect of other teams, the things I’d want my daughters to learn in athletics,” Schremp said. “We have a program that taught the kids to be good, young men. We’re trying to teach them they’re part of something bigger than themselves, and if they all do their job, we’re all going to be successful.”

CRYSTAL LAKE – Chris Schremp’s goals were modest when he took over as Prairie Ridge’s head football coach in 2002.

Schremp was 29 at the time and had been the offensive coordinator under former coach Dave Whitson when the school opened in the fall of 1997. In the program’s sixth season, he was the man.

“I just wanted to keep it consistent,” Schremp said. “My goal when I first got hired was, ‘If I can make it 10 years as a head coach, maybe I’ve done something right.’ ” Actually, right at the start, the goals were even more modest than that.

“Really, my first two couple (of years) I just didn’t want to get fired,” Schremp said, chuckling.

By that 10th year, Schremp had done more than something right – the Wolves won the Class 6A state championship. Now, in his 15th season, Prairie Ridge is a name recognized as a state powerhouse, one on the verge of playing for another state championship.

The No. 1-seeded Wolves (12-0) play host to No. 7 DeKalb (10-2) at 1 p.m.

Saturday at Prairie Ridge Athletic Stadium in a Class 6A semifinal.

The winner advances to meet No. 12 St. Laurence (9-3) or No. 2 Sacred Heart-Griffin (12-0) at 1 p.m., Nov. 26 at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in the state championship game.

Prairie Ridge, along with District 155 cohort Cary-Grove, each have won state championships since 2009. C-G has played for two more state titles, while Prairie Ridge now has its best shot at returning to a championship game.

The Wolves are respected for their prowess with the triple-option offense and their swift 3-5-3 defense. Their closest game since Week 3 was a 41-0 win over Deerfield in the first round of the playoffs; their average margin of victory for the season is 41.2 points.

“It’s a great feeling to be known around the state because of what we do on offense and defense,” quarterback Samson Evans said. “[Coach Schremp] is a great coach. Year in and year out, no matter what guys he has, he’ll teach them to do the right assignments. And he has a great group of coaches around him.”

After the Cougars’ defense stuffed Marian on a fourth-and-1 from its own 29, Hull ran for a touchdown on the ensuing possession. In the first-round victory over Solorio Academy, Wiegmann had 141 rushing yards and two catches for 103 yards and two TDs. However, the heart and soul of the offense has remained Sulaver, who has thrown for 1,831 yards, 20 touchdowns and only six interceptions.

The Barbs clamped down on the CaryGrove offense in the second half last week, holding it to 146 yards in the last two quarters. Linebacker Ben Roelfsema came up with a couple of big stuffs on the sweeps that the Trojans were having success with earlier in the game.

When DeKalb has the ball: Senior quarterback Derek Kyler can do a lot when he

gets the ball – most notably, running with it or finding Cole Tucker. Tucker has 54 catches for 842 yards and 14 touchdowns, while Kyler has completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,959 yards, 27 TDs and five picks. Kyler also has ran for 689 yards on 104 carries, scoring nine times.

Cary-Grove made an effort to take the run away from Kyler and succeeded last week. He had minus-1 yard on nine carries. But Jelante Young broke off an early 65-yard scoring run, and Kyler threw for 155 yards – 131 to Tucker. Tucker also scored twice, and Kyler threw a touchdown pass to Devin Williams.

The Spartans made their free throws down the stretch to hold off Elk Grove, and executed an inbounds play with 6 seconds left to take a two-point lead with 2 seconds left.

Kylie Feuerbach led the way with 15 points, with Kate Majerus adding 11 for the Spartans (2-0), who wrap up the tournament Saturday.

Galauner reaches milestone in win: Julie Galauner passed 1,000 career points in Genoa-Kingston’s 60-43 win over Milledgeville.

Bryant, who became the fourth player in history to follow a Rookie of the Year season with an MVP, received 29 of 30 possible first-place votes to beat out runner-up Daniel Murphy of the Nationals in a 415-245 runaway. Murphy received the other first-place vote.

Cubs teammate Anthony Rizzo finished fourth, just behind the Dodgers’ Corey Seager and just ahead of Colorado’s Nolan Arenado.

Cal Ripken Jr., Ryan Howard and Dustin Pedroia are the others who won Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in consecutive years.

“You can’t really put into words what this feels like,” said Bryant, during the announcement show, with his dad and fiancée at his side. “It’s just been an unbelievable year, for me, for the team, getting married – I don’t know, man. This is unbelievable.”

After getting shut out for the second straight game by the Dodgers on a warm October night in Los Angeles, and falling into a 2-1 hole in the National League Championship Series, the Cubs, for the first time all year, were not the favorites to win the World Series.

Not that anybody in the clubhouse seemed to panic, but the mood was conspicuously somber after the game, the room conspicuously lacking guys who Kris Bryant played in the game.

With one notable exception: Kris Bryant, the second-year third baseman who had both Cubs hits (and a strikeout) against Dodgers starter Rich Hill that night, stood up to wave after wave of media asking similar questions – clearly tiring of the repeats but handling the moment with the poise and patience of a more-veteran Ben Zobrist or Jason Heyward.

• “We’ve got more games to play.”

• “We’re here for a reason. Belief is a very powerful tool.”

Bryant reached base three times the next night as the Cubs routed the Dodgers and swept the final three games of the series to reach the World Series for the first time in 71 years.

Bryant’s huge bat – 39 home runs, a .939 OPS this year – has made him an AllStar in both his big-league seasons, and an MVP front-runner most of the season.

But it’s everything else he does that makes so many others around him better that on Thursday night made him the Cubs’ first National League MVP Award winner since Sammy Sosa in 1998.

24 Statins do more than lower cholesterol Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor never recommend-

ed statins to me, but he says there are new guidelines, and thinks I should now start taking one. What do you think of the new statin guidelines?

Dear Reader: The new guidelines make a lot of sense, because we’ve learned statins have more effects on the body than just lowering cholesterol.

Statins were developed after a Nobel Prize-winning discovery in the 1970s revealed how the body makes cholesterol. Most of the cholesterol in our body is made by our body, not consumed in our food. Statins slow the production of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by the body.

In the 1980s, studies showed statins dramatically lowered blood levels of LDL cholesterol and also lowered the risk of heart attack. At first, we assumed the lower risk of heart attack was entirely explained by the lower cholesterol. That’s because we knew people with high LDL cholesterol in their blood had higher rates of heart attack.

But then a large study conducted at Harvard Medical School found statins profoundly lowered the risk of heart attack, even in people with normal total and LDL cholesterol levels.

That’s because statins do more than just lower cholesterol. Heart attacks occur when cholesterol-filled plaques in the heart’s arteries rupture, causing a clot that blocks blood from getting to the heart. Inflammation inside the plaques causes them to rupture – and statins reduce inflammation.

This realization changed the way doctors think about statins. If statins lower the risk of heart attack even in people with normal cholesterol levels, we should give them to people at high risk for heart at-

The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology issued new statin-prescribing guidelines in November 2013. Until then, doctors prescribed statins to reach specific cholesterol goals or targets. Instead, the new guidelines ask doctors to prescribe statins based on a patient’s overall heart and artery disease risk.

Specifically, the new guidelines recommend patients in any of the following groups be treated with a statin: • People who already have heart or artery disease; • People with very high levels of LDL cholesterol (190 mg/dL or higher); • Anyone between the ages of 40 and 75 who has Type 2 diabetes; • Adults age 40 to 75 years who have a heart disease or stroke risk of 7.5 percent or greater in the next 10 years.

Of course, all drugs have some risk.

Statins can cause muscle cramps and, rarely, more serious muscle injury and liver problems. It’s a matter of balancing your personal risks and benefits. For most people covered by the new guidelines, I believe the benefits of statins are greater than the risks.

Although I don’t know the specifics in your case, I’ll bet the reason your doctor now is recommending statins is you are at high risk for heart disease, even though your cholesterol levels are not particularly high. If so, I would agree.

I am a retired airline employee, and I get passes for my friends and family. I recently provided first-class-eligible round-trip passes from San Diego to Paris to my best friend and her friend. (The fare would have cost them thousands of dollars retail.) The only thing I asked in return was to pick me up a menu, a print or something small that could be packed easily.

They were in Paris for a month, Abby, and they totally forgot me. I am so hurt. Sometimes I want to call them and tell them how I feel. Then I think it wouldn’t be a good idea. He ruffed the club-ace lead, drew two rounds of trumps leaving the queen on the board, cashed the diamond ace and king, then played a third diamond. However, East won with the queen and shifted to the spade queen. Three spade losers later, declarer was one down.

“Did you ever see a worse distribution?” South asked his partner.

“East had the diamond queen and West had ace-third of spades. If the diamond queen or spade ace had been doubleton, or the diamond queen with West, I would have been all right.”

North agreed that his partner was unlucky. However, after the session, what did he point out that his partner had missed?

After ruffing at trick one, South could have made the contract with some excellent guesswork. The curious may work it out. But much simpler was not to ruff; instead, to discard a diamond. Suppose West switches to a diamond. South wins with dummy’s king, draws trumps, plays his last diamond to dummy’s ace and leads another diamond.

Here, the queen appears, so declarer ruffs, crosses to the heart queen and discards a spade on the diamond jack. If East plays low on the third diamond, South pitches a spade and cannot be defeated even if West wins the trick.
