The reasons for our collections Being a fan of both “Antiques Road Show” and “American Pickers” on TV, I looked forward to the November “show and tell” program of the DeKalb County Historical-Genealogical Society. Eight of us volunteered to bring some examples of collectibles and share something about our hobbies at the Nov. 9 meeting.

Marcia Wilson opened the program, explaining three main reasons why people collect: 1. They’re trying to complete a series.

2. They long to possess things that have fascinated them.

3. They use an object to mark a memory and store a story.

Probably the most unusual collection looked like some old nails with small numbers on them, brought by Terry Martin. They may look like common nails, but the railroad companies used them for many years to date stamp railroad ties and even utility poles. Terry has hundreds from several countries.

The most colorful collection was brought

by Anna Marie Coveny: DeKalb Ag and other corn memorabilia, much of it from the local seed company but also other corn-related objects. She even wore a top with a seed corn design – but not a seed-sack dress as you might have seen during the Depression years, when people made clothes from whatever material they had at home.

Ron Klein had the most valuable collection – several books ranging from 1533 to the 20th century, many signed first editions, some worth thousands. He has a library of about 4,000 volumes in his collection.

Carol Woodin’s collection brought back memories of yesteryear – paper dolls. They used to be cut from the Sunday comics – Brenda Starr and even Roy Rogers cutouts. She said kids also cut out pictures of people from Sears Roebuck and “Monkey” Wards wish books

Marcia Wilson shared her wood carvings, some done by her husband Wes, and others obtained from countries in Europe and Africa.

Bud Burgin showed two of his hobbies – mechanical and wood pencils, amassing about 675 over the years. He also has a collection of coin banks that children would get when they opened their first savings account. Most are from DeKalb County banks and vary in shape and size – such as a stagecoach, a book, skyscraper and a barrel.

Steve Bigolin, also a man with multiple collections, brought memorabilia from local banks, various check designs from banks no longer in business such as the Barb City Bank, and a 1910 calendar with a cover photo of Joseph Glidden, published by the First National Bank.

When it was my turn, I shared my collection of old newspapers. The eight that I brought were local weeklies no longer in existence. They were once published in Kirkland, Genoa, Sycamore, Waterman, Shabbona, Hinckley, Somonauk and Sandwich. I also displayed two rarer issues, one that reported the death of Abraham Lincoln and the other about the 1906 California earthquake.

The show and tell was so successful that Marcia said they would repeat it with other hobbyists in another year or so.

County Board says no to propane storage facility

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board rejected a Morris company’s plan to build a propane distribution facility after strong opposition from neighboring homeowners.

On Wednesday, the board voted, 15-9, to turn down the special use permit requested by Dibble Family LLC to build a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road in unincorporated Mayfield Township.

The vote came after the proposal had gone through the approval process for a second time.

“When I look at issues like this, I weigh the good it does for the landowner as well as the county against the detriment it does to the neighbors, and I’ve voted against the neighbors on a couple of occasions – on the wind farm and on the landfill – because there was an overall good that helped the county more,” said Paul Stoddard, D-District 9.

“This time, the balance for me flips the other way. I think this is more detrimental to the neighbors than it provides good for the landowner and the county.”

Opponents raised safety concerns and worried about the effect the project could have on home values. Sycamore Citizens Race Against Propane Storage established a legal fund and retained a lawyer as the plan moved through the planning process earlier this year. The group had said it was prepared to take the issue to court.

John Frieders, R-District 12, said the proposed use met the county’s zoning requirements. He also said that if the board was going to decide issues based on popularity, the county wouldn’t have wind turbines and a landfill. Other supporters on the board said they didn’t want to turn away a business that was willing to invest in DeKalb County.

“We don’t want to push away more businesses that are helping the folks in DeKalb County,” said John Gudmunson, R-District 11.

Frank Riccardi, another neighbor, said that he believed the permit would’ve been approved by the County Board had the group not been organized.

Dibble Family sought the permit to renovate the existing building on the

2.77-acre site and build two 30,000-gallon propane storage tanks on the northeast corner of the property. The company had planned to build a fence to enclose the tanks and office areas.

The facility was to be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers. About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers

and agricultural businesses, according to county documents.

Ron Dibble, principal of Dibble Family LLC, declined to comment after the meeting.

Thrower said the group of neighbors was even considering buying the property so that they could control what happens there in the future.

AFSCME members plan to picket About 40 people expected to be on hand in DeKalb

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Local members of the state’s largest public-employee union plan an informational picket today to let people know where they stand on the impasse between their union and Gov. Bruce Rauner.

About 40 people are expected to be on hand with signs and be available to talk to people about what is going on, said Christine Gardner, an investigator with the Department of Children and Family Services who is a member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ Local 448, which represents workers in 26 state agencies in nine counties.

Local union members plan to picket from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. today in front of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, 760 Peace Road, DeKalb.

“We’re middle-class workers; we have homes and pay taxes in the area,” Gardner said. “We definitely feel that the governor is not being fair,

Rash of car burglaries reported in Sycamore

eolson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Police are asking people to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in their neighborhood after a rash of burglaries to vehicles was reported overnight Wednesday.

Sycamore police received the first calls about break-ins to vehicles around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Deputy Chief Jim Winters said.

The burglaries were clustered on residential streets east of downtown, including the 300 and 400 blocks of Parkside Drive, the 300 block of Terrace Drive, the 300 block of East High Street, the 300 block of Crescent Drive, and the 300 and 400 blocks of east Elm Street, Winters said. There also was

Sycamore deputy police chief a burglary to a vehicle reported in the 700 block of South Main Street, he said.

There were almost 20 vehicles burglarized in all, Winters said, and with the exception of one on South Main, all of them were left unlocked.

For the most part, loose change was the only thing of value taken from the vehicles, and in some cases, nothing was taken, Winters said.

“Most of the time, these are just crimes of opportunity, that if a car door is pulled and it’s locked, the person’s going to go on to the next car,” Winters said.

The only exception to the pattern was the vehicle on South Main. In that case, the culprit broke a window to enter the vehicle and steal a purse.

A credit card and driver’s license belonging to the victim were later recovered, Winters said.

Police have some leads, but have not found any eyewitnesses or video, Winters said. He encouraged people to be on the lookout for suspicious activ-

ity such as people walking around late at night or a vehicle that seems as if it doesn’t belong.

“Most of time people will know if something’s out of place in their neighborhood, and they should call,” Winters said. “It may seem like it’s not a big deal, but if it’s something unusual, they should call us.”

Winters said that even if police don’t catch anyone in the act, just seeing a squad car in the area can be enough to scare thieves away.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000, and callers can remain anonymous.

JOHN C. BUENDGEN John C. Buendgen”Jay” passed away on November 14, 2016 with his loving family by his side.

Survived by his wife of 30 years, Kathy L. (nee Orr) Buendgen; his son, Jayson (Debbie) and daughter, Dana (Mike) Cannon; grandchildren, Ashley E., Ashley C., Brendon, Emily and Maddie; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Duke, Piper and Mackenzie; sister, Kathy Coleman and his brother, Mike (Kathy) Buendgen. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Preceded in death by parents, William and Pauline (nee Kelly) Buendgen and his brother, Barry Buendgen.

Jay was a Tool and Die Maker for Dukane Corporation in West Chicago. He was a diehard Sox fan and an avid bowler who loved playing cards. But most importantly, Jay loved spending time with his grandkids enjoying their time at the water park.

Visitation will be held at the Waterman United Methodist Church from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, November 18, 2016. An additional visitation will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Joliet on Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. Private Family inurnment will be held.

Curbside yard waste collection in DeKalb ends this month

DeKALB – Residents who have yet to get those fallen leaves off their lawn and want them hauled away had better get to work.

The last day for curbside collection of yard waste in the city of DeKalb this year will be Nov. 30, according to a news release from the city.

Waste Management will collect landscape waste on residents’ normal garbage day through that day, while landscape waste dumpsters will remain in place through Dec. 2, officials said.

After Nov. 30, curbside collection of yard waste will resume in the spring.

DeKALB – A recent compliance check found two of 27 local retailers sold tobacco to an underage informant, according to a news release sent Wednesday by DeKalb police.

Clerks at 7-Eleven, 930 N. Annie Glidden Road, and DeKalb Amoco, 920 W. Lincoln Highway, each were cited under the local ordinance that prohibits the sale of tobacco products to children younger than 18. Those found guilty can be fined $350 to $750.

The compliance check, which was conducted Saturday, was funded by a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. It found a 93 percent compliance rate.

Police plan additional compliance checks in the future, according to the news release. DeKalb police Cmdr.

Steve Lekkas said that some checks have shown 100 percent compliance, but it is common for there to be a couple of businesses that fail.

“A lot of it’s just simple training, or new employees,” Lekkas said.

After the check, police enter the business and let the employees know they passed or failed the check and provide them with information about the importance of verifying customers’ ages.

“Education is important,” Lekkas said.

“Instead of issuing fines, we want to make sure they have the information they need.”

D-428 OKs bond MOONLIGHT MADNESS refinancing plan FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18

DeKALB – Property owners won’t see a spike in property taxes in 2018, but over time they’ll have to shell out more in interest to pay back money DeKalb School District 428 borrowed to build its new high school and other projects.

The District 428 board unanimously approved measures Tuesday to refinance $9.9 million in bond debt and hire a company to help with the process.

The $9.9 million is the first portion the district is looking to refinance of the $108 million it borrowed in 2008 to build the new DeKalb High School, Cortland Elementary School and other building improvements in four installments from 2008 to 2011.

The hiring of Ehlers & Associates as financial advisers will cost the district an estimated $140,000, according to board documents.

Andrea Gorla, the assistant superintendent of business and finance, said refinancing the bonds while favorable interest rates are in place will help to prevent a spike in property taxes projected for 2018.

“Because of the recession, we weren’t able to structure the bonds like we wanted,” Gorla said. “[Equalized assessed values] were nose-diving.”

The debt was structured so payments would be flat for the first nine years and increase in the last 11 years.

At the time, area property values were expected to grow between 5 percent and 7 percent annually.

Equalized assessed values in DeKalb have been estimated at $669,062,699 for 2016, an increase of 7.8

This is after DeKalb’s equalized assessed values decreased by 27.4 percent from 2009 to 2014, which caused the tax rate to increase over the past few years, according to Gorla’s presentation.

The process of restructuring the bond debt to reduce the district’s payments and protect taxpayers likely will take multiple years, Gorla said.

“Depending on interest rates every year, we’ll take a portion of [the bonds] and advance refund it,” she said. “It is a fluid plan; the main thing I want people to understand is there is a plan out there.”

Gorla said the bonds won’t be callable until winter 2017, but the district is starting the advance refunding process now to get the best possible interest rates.

“We are not doing this just to do it,” she said. “We will only continue if we find cost savings in this process. We want to see minimum present value savings of 3 percent.”

Don’t exhibit any posters or prints in a sunny window. The sun will cause damage. Make sure the pieces are not remounted or altered. Decide before the show how the collection will be packed and returned. A non-profit show may be run by people with no idea of the cost of old things. Danish modern chairs were offered in stores in the U. S. in the early 1950s.

The Scandinavian designs were inspired by earlier furniture, the 18th-century English chair, a Chinese Ming dynasty chair, a Japanese director’s chair. Many of the modern chairs were made of handcarved curved wooden pieces joined with dovetails to make a comfortable back, arms, seat and sides. Teak, oak, rosewood and light-colored woods were used with fabric, leather or caned seats.

Hans Wegner of Denmark created his most famous chair in 1949. It is now known as “The Chair.” It was made and sold by Hansen/Knoll company for many years. “The Chairs” were chosen for John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in the first-ever presidential televised debate in 1960. One of “The Chairs,” made in about 1969 and featuring a leather seat, the Knoll label and Hansen stamps, sold in 2016 for $610. Later versions of this iconic chair are available in shops and shows today. *** Q: I bought some Noritake Azalea china at a local estate sale because I thought it was interesting and it was reasonably priced. It’s marked with an “M” in a wreath. There are more than 100 pieces, including service for 12 with one coffee cup missing. I don’t plan to use the dishes. Do you have any suggestions where I can sell them?

A: Noritake porcelain was made in Japan by Nippon Toki Kaisha after 1904.

Azalea pattern dinnerware was made

by Noritake as premiums for the Larkin Co., a soap manufacturer in Buffalo, N. Y., from about 1915 to 1932. The letter “M” in a wreath was a mark used by Morimura Brothers, a distributor in New York City. Azalea is a popular pattern and sells online on several sites. You also can sell them to a matching service like replacements.com. Sets of china don’t

sell well unless they are complete. Retail prices online for single pieces are often high. You will get a third or less of that when selling them. *** Q: My husband owned an auto-parts store and has just retired. We have several old advertising signs and lots of old car parts still in boxes we need to sell. Who would be interested in items like these?

A: Advertising signs sell well at advertising auctions. There are many auctions that have recently sold advertising items online. There also are online sites that sell auto parts. Antiques shops and flea-market dealers also sell old advertising signs. Car parts are a little harder. You might find a nearby car rally or car show and ask some of the participants. They might be interested in the boxes of parts. You also can advertise them in a local newspaper. *** Q: I have a brass tea set that has sat unused for many years. Should I polish it or leave the natural patina?

A: You should polish your brass tea set with a commercial brass polish. If it’s heavily tarnished or corroded, take it to a professional. Some brass has been lacquered to prevent tarnish and should not be polished. Polishing damages the lacquer. If the lacquer is peeling, you should go to a professional restorer. *** Q: Should I loan a number of my antiques for a fundraising event? They want me to set up my exhibit and leave it for two weeks. I would like to do it, but I am concerned about security and other problems. What should I worry about? None of the pieces are extremely valuable, but they are among my favorites and some are even family heirloom.

A: There is always a risk when you exhibit your collection. The exhibit should be in a secure building with a 24hour security guard or electronic system.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner said Wednesday he has friends in Donald Trump’s new administration and expects Illinois “to have a voice and a good relationship” with the president-elect.

“I’ve had some good conversations with the new administration in Washington because I want to try to figure out, you know, work well together because I want Illinois to benefit from the changes that are going to come in Washington D.C. There’s going to be some good changes coming,” Rauner said, speaking to a group of business leaders in Springfield to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

Rauner spent the campaign season distancing himself from Trump – avoiding even mentioning his name – as Democrats tried to tie the former venture capitalist to the divisive presidential candidate.

Rauner, lawmakers meet to discuss reported $7B deficit

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner and Illinois lawmakers are contemplating dire economic forecasts as they meet in search of a state budget deal.

Legislative leaders met with the governor Wednesday at the Capitol and discussed numbers released Tuesday by Rauner’s budget director. They include an estimate that the state will be $7 billion in the red by June 30, and that the backlog of unpaid bills will top $13 billion by then.

The Republican governor and Democratic leaders have been unable to agree on a full-year spending plan for about a year and a half. The state is operating with a partial budget that ends next month and lawmakers need to agree on a fiscal blueprint for the spring.

Leaders head to Rome as archbishop becomes cardinal

CHICAGO – A delegation of Illinois political, religious, police and business leaders plan to travel to Rome this week as Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich becomes a cardinal.

The list that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel put out Tuesday has 80 people on it.

It includes Gov. Bruce Rauner, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, Illinois Supreme Court Justice Anne Burke, U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, five Chicago aldermen and Illinois Senate President John Cullerton.

Business leaders include representatives from Walgreen Boots Alliance, United Airlines, ComEd and Turano Bakery, among others.

Chicago native and former NBA player Isiah Thomas also is on the list. So is Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and the city’s fire commissioner, Jose Santiago.

Cupich is one of 17 new cardinals who Pope Francis will elevate during a Satur-

Durbin remains Senate’s No. 2; won’t challenge Rauner

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois has been re-elected as the Senate’s number two Democrat.

The Senate Democratic caucus voted Wednesday to keep Durbin as Democratic whip, a leadership role he’s held since 2005.

Durbin also said he won’t run for Illinois governor in 2018.

Dick Durbin Top Democrats had mentioned him as a possible challenger to Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Durbin told the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday that his choice is to remain in the Senate.

He said that after Tuesday’s election of Republican Donald Trump as president many people encouraged him to do so, saying, “We need you.”

The former state legislator and congressman has represented Illinois in the Senate since 1996.

Trump says transition efforts going ‘smoothly’

NEW YORK – President-elect Donald Trump and his team on Wednesday vigorously rejected charges of turmoil and infighting roiling efforts to set up his White House, national security and economic teams. A week after his upset victory, Trump said the enormous endeavor was proceeding “so smoothly.”

Trump dished out his rebuttal on Twitter, spending yet another day ensconced in his New York skyscraper, beyond the public eye.

Aides and allies vouched for the transition efforts on his behalf, suggesting some commotion was to be expected.

“The beginning of any transition like this has turmoil because it’s just the nature of the process,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said as he left Trump’s transition headquarters in Washington. He said the picture of Trump’s administration would become clearer in the next two or three weeks.

Others close to the transition process described advisers “fighting for power.” Trump has long stoked internal rivalries among his staff – both in his businesses and his campaign – and has created ambiguity in his transition about who has authority to make key decisions.

Eric Trump, one of the president-elect’s sons, raised expectations of imminent progress Wednesday, telling reporters in the morning that appointments were “likely” to come during the day. Then, other Trump aides suggested a slower pace.

“We’re not going to rush to put names

forward until we’re absolutely sure,” Trump spokesman Jason Miller said hours later.

“We’re going to make sure that they’re people we’re confident will pass confirmation and we think can implement the president-elect’s vision.”

Trump’s team noted that President Barack Obama waited until a few weeks after the 2008 election to announce many of his Cabinet appointments.

And former Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who has informally advised members of Trump’s national security team, blamed Trump’s detractors for the reports of drama.

“When you’re doing a transition that is trying to push the kind of change that Mr. Trump wants to be doing, it’s going to be even harder,” said Hoekstra, a former House Intelligence Committee chairman.

The incoming Republican administration also got a boost of support from outgoing Vice President Joe Biden, who met with his successor, Mike Pence, continuing the Obama administration’s show of public support for the transition.

“No administration is ready on Day One,” Biden said after the meeting at the Naval Observatory, which serves as the vice presidential residence. He expressed confidence that

Real problems must be solved

The presidential election of 1884 was said to be the dirtiest in American history. Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland had fathered a child out of wedlock. That led to the Republican slogan, “Ma, Ma, Where’s My Pa? Gone to the White House. Ha Ha Ha.” Republican candidate James G. Blaine was widely suspected of corruption and collusion regarding railroad contracts. That resulted in the Democratic slogan, “James G. Blaine: Continental Liar from the State of Maine.”

It was an election notable for mudslinging and ignoring the real issues. The real problems in the country were twofold: How to ensure the equality of former slaves freed by the Civil War, and how to build a fair economy with the advent of the industrial revolution.

Now, there are new issues that must be resolved. They include: • Build the economy. President Barack Obama inherited a crater, but eight years later, we still limp along. The recovery has been slow, and wildly uneven. Some areas have prospered. Others, such as Illinois, have floundered. Real unemployment, which includes those who have stopped looking for work and those who are underemployed, mask the stated unemployment figures.

Were the economy to grow at 3 percent or 4 percent instead of 1 percent or 2 percent, the additional tax revenue could be used to fund and expand the programs already in place.

• Win the war on terror. One of the more absurd moments of the campaign came when people said Donald Trump should not be elected because he might lead us into a war. We already are in a war.

It’s just a war most Americans have forgotten.

Our current strategy in the war on terror seems to be threefold. We’re worried about what and who we call terrorists. We seem to think that if we have some type of gun control, it might stop them. Those who attack us need to be pursued and punished relentlessly.

• Repair Obamacare. Americans want a health system that works. But nearly seven years after its enactment, 10 percent of the population is ignoring the law. Insurers are ducking out.

Clearly people need to be given more choices.

If young, healthy people want coverage only for catastrophic illness, they should get it. If someone wants coverage that would pay for virtually everything, they should have that option – and cost – too.

Instead, too much of the plan forced people to pay for items they do not want. We need more choices. But not participating should not be an option.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Tell city officials to restore clerk to full time restore the position to full time and they ignored it.

To the Editor: When the city of DeKalb was founded in 1865, the city clerk was a full-time position. Of course, at the time, there were fewer residents and the clerk did everything from the statutory duties to that of water billing clerk, payroll clerk and accountant. They even did birth and death certificates.

Fast forward to 2012, when DeKalb found itself without a clerk after Steve Kapitan resigned. The reaction of the City Council was to slash the salary for the city clerk for the next election to $5,000 a year, making it a part-time position.

In 2013, I ran as a write-in candidate and won the election. Although the shared office was small, I made do because I was a team player. Then, suddenly I did not have a desk, but only a filing cabinet where I kept my recorder (used for closed session meetings) and the city seal. The city seal is used to attest documents and is supposed to be under the control of the city clerk.

The reason that a clerk is elected as opposed to being appointed is to speak for the residents without fear of retribution. That was not the case in my office. The deputies were under the control of the city manager and answered only to her.

I believe that the city clerk’s position should be full time. I believe that the deputies in that office should be hired only by the clerk and not under the control of the city manager.

The city of Sycamore and the town of Cortland, both smaller municipalities than DeKalb, have full-time clerks.

Picture shows poor taste

To the Editor: This week the Daily Chronicle has been publishing an ad for a 2016 Fall Dance Concert being presented by the NIU School of Theatre and Dance.

Pictured is a seated, young, mostly nude girl, holding her knees to her chest in what appears to be a wading pool. The girl is looking up toward the camera, her hair covering most of her face. This nearly nude girl appears very vulnerable, and one could think, at risk.

Has not the message that this image sends been considered by NIU or the Daily Chronicle? What exactly is this photo meant to portray?

Further, what does an image of a disheveled nude girl have to do with a dance concert?

I find this picture to be very offensive and am gravely concerned about the message it sends. I am baffled by the lack of common judgment on the part of both NIU and the Chronicle.

In this year’s campaign, Hillary Clinton repudiated much of the record of her husband’s administration and ran on a platform more culturally liberal than ever. For the first time, it had an explicit call to end restrictions on taxpayer funding of abortion.

The new Democratic strategy had

a few disadvantages. It made polarization worse. The heavily urban, progressive coalition it envisioned was capable of winning electoral-vote majorities, but its geographic distribution put it at a structural disadvantage in races for the House, the Senate and governorships. And the coalition has turned out to be fragile even at the presidential level, precisely because it did not have sufficient appeal to white voters without college degrees. Since the Democrats’ coalition worked best at the presidential level, losing there created a risk of being shut out of power – as they now will be.

Democrats still have alternatives to courting those voters again. They can hope for favorable circumstances, such as a well-timed recession or missteps and scandals in the coming

Palisade, Colorado, voters went all in on the retail pot trade, approving measures to allow retail marijuana sales, retail marijuana testing facilities, retail marijuana product manufacturing facilities and a retail marijuana excise tax.

It’s part of a wave sweeping the country.

California, by far America’s largest state economy, legalized recreational use, along with Nevada, Massachusetts and Maine.

As more states join the legal pot movement on arguments of personal freedom and tax revenue, we have to wonder what the economic impact will be on Colorado, which has certainly benefited from pot tourism. But before we even bother to speculate, we have to see how our new president plans to deal with the conflict between state and federal law.

Retail pot has been possible because the Obama administration has chosen not to enforce the federal law banning pot possession.

Marijuana doesn’t fit very neatly into Trump’s campaign rhetoric. As the self-professed law-and-order candidate, will he select an attorney general who would prioritize the prosecution of cannabis crimes under the federal Controlled Substances Act? If so, he would be violating a conservative position that states should have the right to decide certain things for themselves. It would mean the federal government would be going into states, shutting down regulated markets, businesses and jobs and returning influence to the black market and cartels that controlled the drug trade before the marijuana reform movement took root.

Trump indicated during the campaign

that he would allow states to set their own marijuana policies. But not three full days into the post-election Trump era, we’ve seen him and key advisers back away from better-known campaign pledges.

Take President Barack Obama’s health care law, for example. Trump said Friday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that he would like to keep some parts of the law intact and may seek to amend the statute rather than repeal it.

In the same interview, Trump avoided saying whether he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of state.

The Washington Post followed up with numerous examples of surrogates and advisers softening Trump’s stance on building a wall on the Mexican border, imposing tariffs on Chinese imports, the Iranian nuclear deal and deporting undocumented immigrants.

This isn’t to suggest that Trump won’t make good on his campaign promises. But there are hints that he may be more pragmatic than his campaign rhetoric suggests.

We consider that a good thing.

We’re heeding the call to give him a chance to prove himself. For now, there’s too much equivocation coming out of his transition team to know exactly what he has in store. Whether you’re bothered by the hedging may boil down to whether you voted for him or not. Some will be relieved that he may not be the hardliner he professed to be. Others will see another politician telling people what they want to hear.

Trump administration. They can wait on demography: The white working class is shrinking as a percentage of the population. They can look for a candidate who excites the Obama coalition more than Clinton did. They can continue to try to appeal to these voters based purely on their economic interests, ignoring their values and beliefs.

Under Bill Clinton’s leadership in the 1990s, the Democratic Party tried to appeal to culturally conservative, white working-class voters without abandoning its liberal convictions.

During the middle of the George W. Bush administration, Democrats revived that approach, running candidates opposed to abortion and gun control in some rural districts.

But the political collapse of Republicans at the end of the Bush administration and demographic changes favorable to liberalism made this kind of trimming seem unnecessary to Democrats.

Neidel’s interceptions coming at right time

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The first one gave DeKalb its first lead of the game. The last one made sure Cary-Grove couldn’t come back.

In a season full of pass breakups and near-interceptions, Jake Neidel saved his biggest game for the Barbs’ biggest stage.

Neidel had two interceptions in the team’s 35-21 win over No. 3 Cary-Grove in the quarterfinals of the IHSA Class 6A state playoffs, helping the No. 7 Barbs win and advance to the semifinal at 1 p.m. Saturday at No. 1 Prairie Ridge (120).

“We wanted to be here, of course, and we’ve just been working hard all year,” Neidel said. “We’ve had great coaching and it’s been a team effort.”

Neidel’s performance Saturday brought his season total to four intercep-

tion and career count to 10.

The first came in a 7-7 tie early in the second quarter, and he ran the ball down to the Cary-Grove 30. Three plays later, the Barbs – who had trailed 7-0 but scored on the drive before Neidel’s pick – had their first lead.

His second interception came in the fourth quarter. The Barbs led 35-21 but the Trojans (10-2) were driving in the final five minutes. On a first-and-10 at the Cary-Grove 45, Neidel came up with the pick, DeKalb took over on its 40 and ran out the last 3:22.

Neidel said it was just the latest part of an ever-improving season.

“I struggled a little bit with drops,” Neidel said. “Like Coach (Matt) Weckler said, I had some drops but have been playing pretty well. Our whole defense has been playing really well.”

Three of those drops came in a 28-21 loss to Lake Park in Week 3, one of two

losses for the Barbs (10-2) this year. He came close to interceptions on consecutive plays in the second quarter with the Barbs up 14-0. They still broke up the plays on third and fourth down, forcing a turnover on downs and giving the ball back to the Barbs, who scored on the possession.

“With the Lake Park game, we let that slip away, but it’s back in Week 3 and here we are now,” Neidel said. “It didn’t mean too much, but being where we are now, I can just think of the games ahead and this week.”

His third drop came in the third quarter on a third-down play, with the Lake Park scoring on fourth down to cut the DeKalb lead to 21-7.

Weckler said dropped interceptions can still be positive plays in the form of pass-breakups.

“The biggest thing with situations like that is he is in the right position,”

Weckler said. “Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to follow through and finish the play from start to finish. As a defensive back you have to have a short memory of those sorts of things. You’re going to give up yardage, you’re going to give up touchdowns, but it’s how you come back the next play and turn it around for yourself.”

He added that Neidel showed off his skill in getting to the right place at the right time Saturday.

“He stayed over the top on both interceptions, and once the ball was in the air he was able to break on it and make a play on it,” Weckler said. “That’s kind of our emphasis of our defensive backs, not let anybody beat us deep, stay over the top of them and when the ball gets in the air, if you have the opportunity to make a play on it, make a play. And that’s how he was able to do what he did on Saturday – two times.”

Wiegmann emerging as strong running back for Sycamore

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – It was a rainy Friday night in September when Sycamore starting running back Chris Pawola went down with a severe leg injury in the first half against Kaneland.

Nearly a year removed from being a quarterback for the Spartans sophomore team, junior Peyton Wiegmann suddenly became the Spartans’ primary running back.

He scored on his first touch.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound back did plenty of scoring in the Spartans’ dramatic overtime win over previously undefeated Sterling Saturday to help No. 13 seed Sycamore into a matchup against No. 7 Vernon Hills in a semifinal of the IHSA Class 5A state football playoffs at 2 p.m. Saturday at Engh Field.

“I wasn’t happy that he got hurt, obviously, but I was excited to play – it’s a fun position, you get the ball a lot,” Wiegmann said. “Especially now, I don’t feel like the backup anymore. I have quite a few games under my belt now. I don’t feel those jit-

ters anymore. I just go out and do my thing.”

Wiegmann admits there were some nerves when he took over for Pawola during the Spartans’ 19-0 victory over Kaneland on Sept. 31. However, his first carry was a touchdown on a fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line and he finished the game with 83 yards on 17 attempts.

On the season, Wiegmann has 130 carries for 666 yards and six touchdowns, and in the playoffs alone, he has 62 rushes for 361 yards and four touchdowns.

“I don’t know if you expect that, but we knew that we had a talented kid there, no doubt about that,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said, calling Wiegmann a patient runner. “We knew we had a really good backup at the time and he’s come in and been a really good starter for us.”

Perhaps his finest performance of the season came in Sycamore’s biggest game – the Spartans’ 29-22 overtime win over Sterling, which beat Sycamore 38-6 in the first week of the season.

Wiegmann finished the game with 32 carries and 174 yards with three

touchdowns – including two of the most important scores of the year.

“Oh man, my body was really sore,” Wiegmann said with a laugh. “It was probably the most I got beat up in any game. I felt it during the game, but I wasn’t going to let it slow me down.”

With the Spartans (8-4) trailing 22-14 and the clock showing less than a minute remaining in regulation, Wiegmann scored on a 4-yard touchdown run – coupled with quarterback Ty Sulaver diving into the end zone for the 2-point conversion – to force the game into overtime.

The Spartans opened overtime with the ball and Wiegmann started with a 4-yard run and Sulaver gained two more before the junior running back punched it in for the game-winning touchdown.

“That was a lot of carries (32) for him on Saturday, it’s been his most by far,” Ryan said. “It’s going take his body a little longer to recover this week, and we understand that. ... We talk about it all the time, the pain of putting the gear away is worse than the pain they’re having right now.”

Earlier in the game, the Spartans got the ball back on their own

3-yard line after the Sycamore defense stuffed Sterling on a fourth-and-goal.

Faced with 97 yards of green in front of them, the Spartans went the entire way in nine plays thanks partly to Wiegmann.

In that drive alone, he had seven carries for 56 yards – including three rushes for 10-plus yards and a 7-yard touchdown run.

Wiegmann said he didn’t even realize in the moment that the drive went 97 yards.

The performance against Sterling was his second big game in the playoffs. In the Spartans’ 42-21 win over No. 4 seed Chicago Solorio Academy, he had 141 rushing yards and a touchdown and had two catches for 103 yards and two scores.

Despite starting the year 1-3 and losing their starting running back, Wiegmann and the Spartans are now a win away from the state championship.

“It seemed like it was just those little things that happened that gave us those losses, so I always had the confidence in the team,” Wiegmann said. “We just had to clean up those little things.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Ally Lehman scored 48 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and helped the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team win its home opener against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 114104, Wednesday in double overtime.

The Huskies (2-0) trailed by 12 early. Lehman also got to the line for 16 free throws, converting on 13 of them.

Lehman said that although she had a big night, she didn’t feel any different going into the game.

“I didn’t have a special feeling in the shootaround,” Lehman said. “I just play hard and hopefully good things happen. My rebounding was

strong tonight because I play angry.

It comes down to who wants it more.

Plus, I know that their players will get yelled at for not hustling for rebounds, and I like it when that happens.”

The Huskies started the game slowly, calling a timeout in the first quarter when the Panthers went up 13-4 less than four minutes into the game. Huskies coach Lisa Carlsen said her team might have been a little tenuous in feeling out what the Panthers were throwing at them defensively.

“They are very good at switching up their looks on defense,”Carlsen said. “I feel like we may have been a little nervous to start out the game.

kind of had us jammed up a bit to start, but once we figured out that we had an advantage, we were able to get it going.”

Carlsen also was complementary of Lehman’s performance.

“I can’t say that I have ever been a part of anything like that,” Carlsen said. “That’s just the heart of a warrior right there.”

True freshman guard Janae Poisson also was a factor for the Huskies. She had an efficient shooting night, going 6 for 8 from the field and 2 for 3 from beyond the arc. She finished with 16 points.

The Panthers (1-1) had the Huskies chasing points at both the ends of the fourth quarter and the first overtime and yet, couldn’t close out the game.

Panthers coach Kyle Rechlicz said the Huskies’ defense took them out of their rhythm.

“We weren’t able to run our primary offensive set tonight as much as we would have liked,” Rechlicz said. “We’ve talked about closing out games before. I’ve seen it in practice with us. We have to get better at finishing when we have an opponent down.”

Junior forward Steph Kostowicz led the Panthers in scoring with 30 points on 9 for 14 from the field and 4 for 5 from the arc.

The Huskies travel to Macomb to play Western Illinois at 4:30 p.m.

Huskies outlast the Eagles on the road

sports@daily-chronicle.com YPSILANTI, Mich. – Playing in a stadium nicknamed The Factory, Jordan Huff and the Northern Illinois football team put in some overtime Wednesday night to beat Eastern Michigan, 31-24.

Huff ran for his third touchdown of the game on NIU’s overtime possession, and backup linebacker Alex Schwab stopped Eastern Michigan’s Blake Banham on a fourth-down run to seal the victory.

On a day when the Huskies (4-7, 4-3 Mid-American Conference West) were forced to play redshirt freshman Daniel Santacaterina, their fourth quarterback of the season, Huff became a second-half workhorse after fellow tailback Joel Bouagnon was injured and Schwab was on the field in place of an injured Ladell Fleming.

Santacaterina took over for Ryan Graham in the second quarter and the second pass of his career was tipped and intercepted, setting up a short scoring drive that gave Eastern Michigan (6-5, 3-4) a 21-0 halftime lead.

After being outgained 313-141 in the first half, the Huskies more than evened things out with a 220-42 advantage in the third quarter.

Graham – the victim of a roughing the passer penalty and a hard hit along the sideline earlier in the game – was walked off the field after a big hit by the Eagles’ Maxx Crosby.

Nationals’ Scherzer, Boston’s Porcello win Cy Young Awards The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Rick Porcello of the Boston Red Sox won the AL Cy Young Award by a narrow margin, and Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals has taken the NL prize.

Porcello led the majors with 22 wins and beat out Detroit’s Justin Verlander and Cleveland’s Corey Kluber in results announced Wednesday. Porcello got only eight first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America while Verlander drew 14.

But Porcello drew more support across the board and was listed by all 30 voters – Verlander was left off two ballots.

Scherzer become the sixth pitcher to win the Cy Young in both leagues, earning the NL honor by a wide margin. He led the majors with 284 strikeouts and topped the league with 20 wins, and beat out Cubs teammates Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.

On the silver screen

From Oscar bait to popcorn-pleasers, 12 movies worth seeing this holiday season

or every piece of high-fiber movie-awards fodder soon to hit theaters – “Jackie,” “Nocturnal Animals,” “Fences,” et al. – there is its opposite, if not its aesthetic equal. (“Bad Santa 2,” anyone?)

Yes, we are now entering that time of year when the contrast will never be starker between the movies that you have to see (at least if you want to enter the office Oscar pool) and the movies that you want to see (that is, if you want to know what everyone is taking about at the water cooler on Monday).

How about a few that are actually worth seeing?

We scanned this holiday season’s movie offerings for recommendations.

Some we’ve seen already, some we’ve read about and some we’ve simply made our best educated guess on, based on provenance (that’s a fancy word for backstory). In each of six genres – drama, romance, comedy, scifi, thriller and family – we’ve come up with two smart choices that represent the twin poles of holiday moviegoing: cinephilia and popcorn populism.

DRAMA “Manchester by the Sea”

Cast: Casey Affleck, Lucas Hedges, Michelle Williams Elite pedigree: Simultaneously wrenching and nuanced, the latest drama from famously perfectionist writer-director Kenneth Lonergan (“Margaret”) explores the relationship between a man who is haunted by his past (Affleck, never better) and his newly fatherless teenage nephew (Hedges). (Nov. 25, R)

“Bleed for This”

Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Ciaran Hinds, Miles Teller Everyman appeal: Featuring a strong central performance by Teller, this gritty “Rocky”-esque biopic is based on the true story of Rhode Island boxer Vinny Paz (formerly Pazienza), who came back from a devastating spinal cord injury to defeat Roberto Duran for the International Boxing Council’s super middleweight title. THRILLER “Elle”

Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte Elite pedigree: Variety says that director Paul Verhoeven – yes, that Paul Verhoeven, of “Showgirls” infamy – may have hit a career high with this “knowingly incendiary but remarkably coolheaded” French-language thriller about a rape victim (Huppert) who bypasses the criminal justice system to seek revenge on her attacker.

ROMANCE “La La Land”

“Passengers”

Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt Everyman appeal: It may be set in deep space, where a writer (Lawrence) and an engineer (Pratt) wake up early from hibernation – alone out of more than 5,000 slumbering passengers – and find themselves falling in love. COMEDY “The Edge of Seventeen”

Cast: Hailee Steinfeld, Woody Harrelson Elite pedigree: Unfolding, as Indiewire put it, “like a symphony of small humiliations,” the darkly funny directorial debut of Kelly Fremon Craig pairs Steinfeld, as a relatable, angsty, mildly despairing high schooler, with Harrelson, as her acerbic teacher and reluctant mentor. Stage Coach Theater to put on ‘Christmas Carol, The Musical’ Oswego singer highlights Glidden DAILY CHRONICLE The last show of the 2016 Stage Coach Theater season is “Christmas Carol, The Musical.”

This classic tale revolves around Mr. Scrooge who believes that celebrating Christmas has nothing at all to do with him as he ventures home through the crowded London streets.

Everyone he encounters begs for something from him, most especially his money, in his curmudgeonly opinion.

However, he later encounters ghosts and visions of the past, present and most chillingly the future. He foresees his lonely fate and turns his life around on Christmas morning.

The many songs, such as “Link by Link,” “A Place Called Home” and “God Bless Us Everyone” bring a new dimension to this well-known saga.

The music was written by Alan Menken, who has provided award-winning entertainment for nearly 40 years, including “The Little Mermaid” and “Newsies,” along with the TV hit “Galavant.” He has been named a Disney Legend for his many contributions

and that influence can be heard in this production. Lyrics were written by Lynn Ahrens, who also wrote “Seussical,” and “Ragtime.”

“Christmas Carol, The Musical” is not as dark as previous renditions.

The cast of more than 50 consists of children and adults of all ages.

Scrooge is played by Dave Watson of Aurora and this is his third show at Stage Coach. He was on stage often in his youth but took a 40-year hiatus to be an Aurora fireman. Now, in retirement, he’s excited to return to the stage.

Dan Hyde is directing his second show for Stage Coach and also serves as the president of the Board of Directors. Hyde said this directorial endeavor has brought out his love for working with children on stage, which he didn’t anticipate.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 25, 26 and Dec. 1 through 4 and 2 p.m. Nov. 26, 27 and Dec. 3 at the theater at 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb.

Homestead’s 2016 season Nov. 20 DAILY CHRONICLE

An autumn vocal treat awaits visitors to the Glidden Homestead in DeKalb.

On Sunday, Nov. 20, from noon to 4 p.m., guests of all ages can hear the vocal talents of Kimberly Moorman.

Also that day is a Glidden Homestead volunteer recognition event, honoring the recent hard work of volunteers at the National Register of Historic Places site.

Kimberly Moorman, a resident of Oswego for 13 years, has extensive singing experience earning a master’s degree in vocal education and vocal performance certificate from Northern Illinois University in 2008.

She sang in Europe as a member of Voci d’estate, a summer program for emerging opera singers and also has been a member of the Philander Consort of Dixon.

She is the choral director at Traughber Junior High is Oswego.

She previously taught general music

and choir at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb for 10 years. She is the newly elected choral representative for District 9 of the Illinois Music Educators Association.

As a lover of the stage, she has been in theater for 25 years and there are too many productions to mention, but as a member of Stage Coach Players in DeKalb, she has played Dolly Levi in “Hello Dolly,” Rona Peretti in “Spelling Bee,” the karate-wielding Sarah in “Company” and most recently Cinderella’s mother in “Into the Woods.”

As part of the Homestead’s 2016 season, visitors can tour the Joseph Glidden’s Home where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop, and visit the 1870s brick barn currently being excavated.

Stage Coach Theater will present “Christmas Carol, The Musical” Nov. 25-27 and Dec. 1-4 at the theater in DeKalb.

Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance’s next Mainstage Series production, the Fall 2016 Dance Concert, opens Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Huntley Middle School Auditorium.

The dance production consists of five pieces, and includes ballet, modern and contemporary dance forms choreographed by faculty members Judith Chitwood, Paula Frasz and Rich Grund.

“Raymonda Divertissements” is the first piece to be performed. It is a fulllength ballet originally choreographed by the legendary Marius Petipa and restaged by Chitwood. It is a rich combination of classical ballet technique and the theatrical style of Hungarian character dance.

The second piece is “D-Construction,” which originally was choreographed by Septime Webre as a tribute to Merce Cunningham, an American dancer and choreographer who was one of the greatest influences of contemporary and modern dance in both the U.S. and Great Britain. It is a fastpaced pieced choreographed by Grund.

“Voices of Light “ is a character study of the French heroine of the

100 Year’s War, Saint Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc), and explores the concept of reluctant duty. It is choreographed

by Frasz.

The contemporary duet, “Still Lifes,” originally choreographed

by Dermot Burke, is restaged by Grund and is the fourth dance piece.

Performed by SoTD students Libby Thomson and Stephen Blood, the two NIU seniors tell the love story of two statues that are suddenly able to move and explore the world around them.

The final piece is a solo performed by senior dance major Gail Honeywell, who tells a mythical tale of an Appalachian madwoman, driven insane by grief, loss and hardship. Frasz choreographed “Woman from the Holler” around a washtub of water on the stage.

The show runs through Sunday.

Performances start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Huntley Middle School Auditorium, 1515 S. Fourth St. in DeKalb.

BRIEFS KC student group hosting dance on Nov. 26

The Kishwaukee College student organization, Latinos-Unidos, will host a dance, “Glow Party,” from 4 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Nov. 26, at Hickory Grove, 1127 N. Seventh St. in Rochelle.

The event will feature dance music spun by a DJ as well as food for purchase, activities and a raffle. Admission per person is $10 in advance and $12 at the door. NIU Annuitants to see ‘End of the Rainbow’ show

The Northern Illinois University Annuitants Association will travel to Chicago on Dec. 4 to see “End of the Rainbow” at Stage 773.

“End of the Rainbow” is the story of the 1968 planned comeback of Judy Garland in London. Featuring some of Garland’s most memorable songs, this funny play with music offers unique insight into the inner conflict that inspired and consumed one of the most beloved figures in American popular culture.

The group will depart NIU at 11 a.m. and Oak Crest at noon.The show is at 2 p.m. and the group will drive through Chicago’s loop

after the show to see holiday decorations and lights and spend time at Water Tower Place for dinner (on your own).

If there is a specific reason for your infertility, it may be possible to treat. If you have no treatment options, consider assisted-reproduction techniques, such as artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. Problems with fertility often have a solution – with a healthy baby as a result.

Dear Reader: About one in seven couples in the United States are unable to conceive a child after trying for one year.

The infertility is caused either by the man alone (about 40 percent of the time), by the woman alone (about 40 percent of the time) or by both partners (about 20 percent of the time). So it is possible something about you is responsible for your wife’s difficulty with becoming pregnant.

Male infertility may be caused by a variety of problems: • Hormonal problems. For example, low levels of testosterone (the main male hormone) or thyroid hormone.

• Problems with the testicles. These include abnormal growth or development or damage from trauma and infections.

• Problems with the flow of sperm. This may include blocked tubes that transport sperm or problems with ejaculation.

• Abnormal sperm function. This may affect the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg.

• Exposure to toxins. Radiation, for example, or industrial chemicals.

• Medications and drugs. These include psychiatric medications, alcohol and anabolic steroids used for bodybuilding.

Both live on their own and have decent jobs. After the divorce, I managed to keep a roof over our heads, food on the table and provide college for my children.

My ex-husband, their father, sporadically paid child support, which resulted in an arrearage owed for the past nine years.

Recently, I received a substantial sum of the balance I was owed for back child support.

My dilemma is my children feel because their father is having financial problems (finances were always his issue), I should give the money back to him because I am financially secure.

However, West had three hearts and he knew that East’s play denied the heart jack, because East would have signaled with the top of his touching cards. If West had led a second heart, shortly thereafter declarer would have discarded a diamond loser on dummy’s heart queen.

Instead, West shifted to the diamond eight.

South took East’s jack with his ace, drew trumps ending in the dummy and led the heart six, but East won with his king and cashed two diamond tricks to defeat the contract.
