Racists and anti-Semites: Still losers POLL YESTERDAY’S

To all you anti-Semites, racists and other haters out there: Donald Trump might have won the election, but you are still losers.

The American people want change, they want a new kind of leader to take us in a new direction, they want an outsider to “drain the swamp” – but few of us voted for the morally bankrupt ideologies of racism and sexism.

Most everyone still detests that garbage, regardless of who they supported in the election.

It’s up to us as a community to continue to make clear that we’re not with that loose confederation of hate-stained wretches.

When you see hate speech or symbols of hate, speak out. Let those pushing it know you don’t agree. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from general scorn.

If people are flying a Nazi flag in a pickup truck in the middle of the day, take a picture, pass it on. Someone wants to push a Confederate battle flag in your face and tell you it symbolizes anything other than a rebellion founded “upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man” – tell them to get lost.

When I saw a Nazi SS flag flying outside a home near DeKalb last summer, I felt it was important to talk to the person displaying it. People who think hate symbols are a joke should know that we do notice, and that we as a community don’t welcome what those symbols stand for.

It’s harder to speak hatred – even unintentionally – when it’s connected to you personally.

If someone assaults you verbally or physically – especially because of your race, religion or sexual orientation – call the police.

You don’t have to put up with it. The decent people of DeKalb County don’t want you to put up with it, and neither do our police.

Like our country, our community welcomes many cultures, people from nations around the world. It is nearly evenly balanced between people of liberal and conservative views, and we are stronger for it.

Some online message boards might create a comfortable, toxic echo chamber for those interested in reviving racism, sexism, segregation and other discredited ideologies of the past. The new chief adviser to Trump might have declared his Breitbart news site an altright platform – not a good pick, Donald – but in the real world, white nationalists are still an ugly fringe element whose main currency is not ideas, but racial slurs and appalling internet memes.

I know racism and anti-Semitism did not carry the day in DeKalb County on Nov. 8, and I sincerely believe that racial hatred was not the motivation for most Americans who voted for Trump.

To those for whom it was, sorry – you didn’t win anything.

NEW YORK – Facebook is under fire for failing to rein in fake and biased news stories that some believe may have swayed the presidential election. Its predicament stems from this basic conundrum: It exercises great control over the news its users see, but it declines to assume the editorial responsibility that traditional publishers do.

On Monday, Facebook took a minor step to address the issue, clarifying its advertising policy to emphasize that it won’t display ads on sites

that run information that is “illegal, misleading or deceptive, which includes fake news.” The company said it was merely making explicit a policy that was already implied.

Its move followed a similar step by Google earlier on Monday, after the search giant acknowledged that it had let a false article about the election results slip into its list of recommended news stories.

In the case of both companies, the aim is to discourage fake-news sites by depriving them of revenue.

DeKalb woman held on $5 million bond in boyfriend’s killing

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb woman accused of strangling her boyfriend was acting in self-defense, her lawyer said Tuesday in DeKalb County Court.

Kela M. Moss, 26, of 419 S. First St., DeKalb, was charged Monday with first-degree murder in connection with the death of her boyfriend, 25-year-old Brendon Brown, who lived with her in the apartment. If convicted, Moss could face 20 to 60 years in prison.

“This was the culmination of a long period of domestic abuse,” said Moss’s attorney, Robert Kela M. Nolan. “We will prove Moss that she was defending herself when this happened.”

Brown was out on bail at the time of the murder. He was charged Oct. 14 with robbery and domestic battery for allegedly hitBrendon ting Moss, pulling her Brown hair and stealing her keys, purse and phone, according to court documents. When Brown was released on a recognizance bond, he was ordered to stay away from Moss and her apartment. Brown was arrested again Nov. 4 after police found that he had violated that court order.

Moss walked into the DeKalb Police Department at 12:22 a.m. Monday and asked to speak with an officer. She told the officer that there had been an incident Sunday and that there was a body inside her apartment, DeKalb Police Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

Moss gave the officer the keys to her apartment and gave permission for officers to go inside. Officers went to the apartment, and found Brown dead inside. An autopsy showed he had been strangled, police said.

Redel declined Tuesday to comment further on the manner of death.

In court documents filed Monday, prosecutors said the murder happened “on or between” Friday and early Monday. Investigators are working to determine exactly when the man died, but Redel said the man had been dead inside the apartment long before po-

Police knew that Moss and Brown had been dating and that he had been arrested before. While the department routinely enforces orders of protection, officers can’t watch specific properties 24 hours a day to ensure the orders aren’t violated, Redel said.

“There are far too many incidents of domestic violence,” he said.

Moss and Brown had been dating for at least a year and had a history of domestic violence, records show. They didn’t have any children that police knew about, Redel said.

According to a police report from Brown’s Oct. 13 arrest, Moss told police that her boyfriend forcibly took her keys, purse and phone from her while they were in a car stopped at a stop sign in DeKalb. The officer who made the report noted “this department has a previous arrest for domestic battery with the victim and the

suspect.”

Over the objection of prosecutors, Judge Philip Montgomery ordered Brown to be released on a $5,000 recognizance bond Oct. 19. At that time, he ordered Brown to have no contact with Moss and to stay away from the apartment at 419 S. First St., according to court records.

Prosecutors also had asked that Brown be placed on electronic home monitoring at the time, a request the judge denied.

Police were called to the apartment again on Nov. 4 to check on Moss.

When they arrived, Moss said Brown was in the apartment. Brown told police he was just visiting. Moss was later involuntarily committed to the hospital, and Brown also went to the hospital, court records show. Police arrested Brown two days later after learning about the judge’s no-contact order, according to police reports con-

tained in court documents.

The police reports from that incident give no details about why either Moss or Brown went to the hospital.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert ordered Moss to be released on a $5,000 recognizance bond on Nov. 7 – again over the objection of prosecutors. In an affidavit Brown filed that day, he referred to Moss as his wife.

On Tuesday, Stuckert kept Moss’s bond at $5 million after her attorney said he planned to file a bond reduction motion. Several of Moss’s family members appeared and stood in the gallery during the hearing. Nolan said after the hearing that he wants to get the bond lowered. He said Moss has no criminal record.

Moss worked at Johnson Controls, according to court documents.

Moss is next due in court on the bond reduction motion at 8:45 a.m.

District 428 board to draft lice policy Parents voice concerns at meeting; one calls problem ‘an epidemic’

DeKALB – A mother voiced her concerns Tuesday with the DeKalb School District 428 Board about the absence of a policy addressing students with lice in the schools.

Wendy Rhoads, who has a child at Cortland Elementary School, said District 428 should have a policy detailing lice outbreak procedures. However, the “communicable diseases” section of the parent handbook does not specifically mention lice.

“It’s an epidemic, and we’re pleading for help,” Rhoads said.

Board President Victoria Newport said that while the district does not presently have a lice policy on the books, board members are in the process of drafting one.

“We have been using Board of Health policies as a guide, but we will draft something specifically to apply to our school district,” she said.

Newport said the draft would be brought up as an informational item during the next board meeting and will likely come to a vote during the meeting that follows.

Rhoads said to board members that eight nearby school districts, including Sycamore, Kaneland, Rochelle, Genoa-Kingston, Burlington Central, Geneva, Yorkville and Aurora, have lice policies in place.

Rhoads said parents should be held accountable for doing home lice checks, and the district should have measures in place to help families who do not know how or cannot afford to properly treat an infestation.

“Some families already had it eight times this year,” Rhoads said. “Pes-

ticide treatments are OK once; they are not OK eight times within the four months we’ve been in school.”

Brandi Liebert, a parent in attendance at the meeting, said her son, who has attended Cortland and Littlejohn elementary schools, brought home lice infestations that spread to other family members.

“I think it’s a bigger problem than [school officials] realize,” Liebert said.

Hillary Joy, another parent in attendance at the meeting, said her daughter at Founders Elementary School had a lice infestation once in kindergarten, four or five times in second grade, and again in fourth grade.

She said one issue contributing to multiple infestations for families is when students hang their coats in shared lockers at school.

“What angers me most is that a policy is not even in place,” Joy said.

City’s tax rate to drop as property values grow

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Homeowners could see a slight decrease in the amount they pay the city in property taxes next year, provided their property was not reassessed.

Under the city’s proposed tax levy for the 2016 property tax year, the owner of a home with an assessed value of $150,000 who claims the homestead exemption would pay about $724 in property tax to the city next year, down from $740 this year.

The decrease in the city’s overall property tax rate is attributable to the DeKalb library holding steady the amount it will collect to pay for bonds that paid for the library expansion and renovation project, city Finance Director Cathy Haley said. The library will collect almost $2.3 million, but because property value has grown, all proper-

DeKalb finance director ties will be taxed at a slightly lower rate.

“As a home-rule community we can take advantage of that [assessed value], capture more dollars and still hold the rate the same,” Haley said.

City officials project next year’s property tax take will be almost $13 million, but after bond abatements are subtracted, it is closer to $8.4 million, about a 5.8 percent increase over what was collected this year.

The data show the city is making progress on two fronts that were major factors in the city’s credit rating being downgraded earlier this year: a declining property tax base and hefty pension obligations.

At a public hearing on the tax levy Monday, Haley told City Council members that this year, the value of property in the city grew about 8.6 percent.

The property value growth will allow the city to reap more revenue without increasing its tax rate.

Although it is now more aggressively contributing to public employee pension funds, the city still is unable to cover all of its obligations through its property tax collections.

In 2017, property tax revenue is expected to fully fund DeKalb’s required contribution of almost $5.5 million to police and fire pension funds, Haley said.

However, the decision to hold the tax

rate steady this year will mean that the city’s general fund will have to cover about $1.3 million in required payments to the Illinois Municipal Retirement fund and Social Security, Haley said.

“We aren’t quite funding all of our employer obligations [with property tax collections], however, we are funding fully the police and fire pension obligations,” Haley said.

The decision to hold the line on taxes also has led to a budget with spending cuts that city staff say are not sustainable.

The city accounts for about 9 percent of the total tax bill in the city of DeKalb, with the library making up 4 percent and School District 428 claiming the largest share at 62 percent, Haley said.

The council is scheduled to consider the levy proposal for a first reading at its meeting Nov. 28, and could give final approval at its Dec. 12 meeting.

Born May 20, 1942 in Rockford, IL the daughter of Ralph Smith and Frances Mae Moore (Donald) Cook. She married Theodore J. Bruch on Jan. 19, 1963 in Fairdale, IL. Among numerous honors, Marlyn served as the 2009 Pumpkin Festival Parade Grand Marshal, and has been awarded the Clifford Danielson Outstanding Citizen Award, Sycamore Athena Award, and the 2003 AYOP Lifetime Achievement Award.

She is survived by her brother, William (Kathryn) Lenschow; sisters-in-law, Janet (Robert) Lenschow and Mary Catherine Burkart; nieces, Susan (Brian) Crull, Lynn (Kent) Paulus, Lisa (Brad) Warren, Amy (Bob) Brown, Kimberly (Mary) Winkelmann, and Debra (Nicholas) Bednarek; nephews, Chuck (Lynn) Lenschow, Rick Lenschow, and Bill Lenschow; several great-nieces and nephews; and special friend, Dr. James Phelps.

Predeceased by her brothers, Robert and Donald Lenschow; and niece, Sandra Lenschow.

Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016 in the Federated Church, 612 W State St., Sycamore with Reverend Jan Proeber officiating. GENOA – Police are asking residents for help as they investigate a daytime residential burglary near Genoa.

The burglary happened between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 9 in the 34000 block of Genoa Road, according to a news release from DeKalb County Crime Stoppers.

The homeowner reported that cash and CDs were taken in the burglary, the release said.

Police also are seeking information about a reported car burglary at Suburban Apartments in DeKalb.

A car burglary was reported Nov. 7 outside of apartment building No. 7, according to a news release. Cash was reported stolen.

Anyone with information about either crime is asked to call DeKalb County Crime Stoppers at 815-8953272. Callers do not have to give their names.

Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $1,000; callers can remain anonymous.

Robert Earl Petersen, passed away in his home on November 7, 2016 after a brief illness.

He was born to Anna and Charles Petersen in DeKalb, Illinois on April 4, 1928. He attended DeKalb high school where he played on both the football and basketball teams. After graduation he enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He attended Colorado College where he met and married the love of his life, Doris. Shortly after graduation Robert and Doris moved to Rockford, Illinois where they lived and raised six children together. Robert went on to earn his Master’s degree from Rockford College and became a teacher for Rockford District 205.

He is predeceased by his five brothers and sisters and his eldest daughter, Janie Petersen.

Robert is greatly loved and missed by

his wife of 64 years, Doris; children, Daniel (Cindy) Petersen, Kristine (Andy) Voigt, Karen Alexander, Kathryn (Drew) Wickham, William (Sally) Petersen; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will remain “sweet-as-ever” to his family.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, there will be a private gathering for immediate family only.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan suggested Tuesday that legislators should approve another short-term spending plan without giving in to any of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s demands, indicating the ideological divide behind the state’s epic budget stand persisted through the bruising election season.

The Democrat made the comments after meeting with Rauner and other GOP leaders for the first time since Election Day, when the Republicans picked up enough seats in the state House to leave Democrats four votes shy of the supermajority they’d need to override the governor’s vetoes.

The Democrats lost two Senate seats but still have a veto-proof majority in that chamber.

Responding to Madigan’s comments, Republican leaders said they won’t agree to another partial spending plan and that Rauner’s call for business-friendly, union-weakening measures needs to be part of the discussions. Rauner also wants lawmakers to consider term limits and changing how legislative districts are drawn.

‘Fast Eddie’ charged; case tied to tobacco deal

CHICAGO – A former Chicago alderman nicknamed “Fast Eddie” for his adeptness at backroom dealing was offered tens of millions of dollars in legal fees stemming from a $9 billion tobacco settlement with Illinois even though he did no legal work on the landmark civil case, according to an indictment unsealed Tuesday that charges him with breaking federal tax laws.

Edward R. Vrdolyak, 78, is a prominent figure in the often-corrupt history of Chicago politics, doing a 10-month stint in federal prison in 2011 in a $1.5 million real estate kickback scheme. In the mid1980s, he led an aldermanic bloc staunchly opposed to Chicago’s first black mayor, Harold Washington, and later focused on his successful law practice.

Judge delays trial for Melodie Gliniewicz

WAUKEGAN – A judge has delayed a felony trial for the widow of Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz, who killed himself and made it look like he was gunned down in the line of duty.

Lake County Judge James Booras on Tuesday pushed back Melodie Gliniewicz’s trial to Feb. 6. The delay is needed because defense attorneys and prosecutors are arguing about whether charges should be dropped.

Gliniewicz was indicted after her husband committed suicide last year.

She has pleaded not guilty to charges she siphoned money from the Fox Lake

vice programs and higher education institutions. Illinois is also incurring debt because it is shelling out more in court-ordered spending than it is collecting in taxes.

“I wish there was a greater sense of urgency from the Democratic leaders,” said Rep. Jim Durkin, the Republican House leader.

Madigan told reporters that he will appoint Democratic Rep. Greg Harris to be the party’s chief negotiator in budget discussions and that more appointments are coming. Republicans were taken aback, saying that wasn’t mentioned in the meeting.

“We heard the speaker’s comments and we’re frankly confused by them,” said Sen. Christine Radogno, the Republican Senate leader.

In the spring, both parties formed legislative groups to negotiate a budget and Radogno said it was her understanding that House and Senate leaders would use that as a starting point going forward, instead of starting the process again.

Rauner and legislative leaders are due to meet again Wednesday.

Lawmakers on Tuesday began their brief annual fall session, during which Democrats are expected try to overturn some of Rauner’s vetoes.

Rockford honored for helping vets find housing

ROCKFORD – The city of Rockford is being recognized by first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden for their work eliminating homelessness among veterans.

Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey spoke at a White House panel Monday to discuss how his city has been able to help veterans find housing.

The city was the first to achieve the goal of ending homelessness as part of Michelle Obama’s “Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness.” The Department of Housing and Urban Development and Department of Veteran Affairs said Rockford has met the goal the past two years.

Rockford has addressed veteran homelessness by improving coordination among housing groups, government agencies, nonprofits and other organizations. The city also created a database to track veterans in the area to provide help when needed.

Oil pipeline company seeks incoming chairman of the Republican Governors Association, said permission to proceed CANNON BALL, N.D. – The company building a $3.8 billion oil pipeline sought a federal judge’s permission Tuesday to circumvent President Barack Obama’s administration and move ahead with a disputed section of the project in North Dakota, as opponents held protests across the country urging it to be rejected.

Dallas-based Energy Transfer Partners and a subsidiary asked the court to let them lay pipe under a Missouri River reservoir, a plan the Standing Rock Sioux says threatens its drinking water and cultural sites. The Army Corps of Engineers said Monday that it needs more time to study the impact of the plan.

5 Utah students stabbed in locker room; teen detained

OREM, Utah – As a group of boys at a Utah high school changed Tuesday morning into gym clothes for physical education class, a straight-A student pulled out a knife in the locker room and stabbed five of his classmates, sending the injured running for their lives and covered in blood, police said.

The 16-year-old suspect with no record of disciplinary trouble also stabbed himself in the neck and was cornered by school workers until a police officer assigned to Mountain View High School got to the locker room and subdued him with a Taser shot.

The five victims are all expected to survive, hospital officials said Tuesday afternoon.

Trump meets with Pence amid transition challenges

NEW YORK – Hidden from the public in his Manhattan high-rise, Donald Trump huddled Tuesday with Vice President-elect Mike Pence as he tried to fill out key posts in his Cabinet.

But the transition team appeared to be straining under the enormous challenge of setting up a new administration.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers, a respected Republican voice on national security issues, announced he was quitting the transition effort.

And an apparent clerical oversight effectively halted the Trump team’s ability to coordinate with President Barack Obama’s White House.

With Trump out of sight for several days, his allies engaged in an unusual round of public speculation about his potential appointments – including their own futures – as the president-elect and his aides weighed the nation’s top national security posts.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani seemed to be angling for secretary of state.

But Trump’s transition team was reviewing Giuliani’s paid consulting work for foreign governments, which could delay a nomination or bump Giuliani to a different position, said a person briefed on the matter but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

Giuliani founded his own firm, Giuliani Partners, in 2001, and helped businesses on behalf of foreign governments, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

He also advised TransCanada, which sought to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, and helped the maker of the painkiller drug OxyContin settle a dispute with the

Drug Enforcement Administration.

A Trump official said John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, remained in contention for secretary of state.

Bolton has years of foreign policy experience, but he has raised eyebrows with some of his hawkish stances, including a 2015 New York Times op-ed in which he advocated bombing Iran to halt the country’s nuclear program.

Businessman Carl Icahn disclosed on Twitter, based on conversations with the president-elect, that Trump was considering Steve Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs banker, and Wilbur Ross, a billionaire investor, to lead the Treasury and Commerce departments.

Pence, now running the transition team, ignored questions from reporters both as he entered Trump Tower, a thick binder tucked under his arm, and as he left six hours later.

He took over from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who spent months running transition operations before his demotion last week.

The switch has slowed Trump’s ability to coordinate with the White House. Pence has yet to sign a memorandum of understanding facilitating interactions between his team and Obama administration officials. Christie had signed the document, but Pence’s promotion makes it invalid.

A person familiar with the transition efforts said different factions in Trump’s team “are fighting for power.”

Indeed, Trump effectively created two power centers in his White House even before taking office. He named Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus as his chief of staff and flame-throwing media mogul Steve Bannon as his chief strategist, but called them “equal partners.”

WASHINGTON – Speaker Paul Ryan unanimously won his GOP colleagues’ votes on Tuesday for another term at the helm of the House. He told fellow Republicans he had President-elect Donald Trump’s support, and heralded “the dawn of a new, unified Republican government.”

“It feels really good to say that actually,” Ryan told reporters. “This will be a government focused on turning President-elect Trump’s victory into real progress for the American people.”

While victory was the GOP unifier, Democrats were verging on disarray.

House Democrats abruptly announced Tuesday that they were delaying their own leadership elections set for Thursday until Nov. 30 to give lawmakers more time to process disastrous election results.

It’s not clear whether the election delay might morph into a real challenge to Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. She has led House Democrats for more than 12 years and has consolidat-

ed support with strong fundraising and an ability to deliver votes, but there’s long been grumbling from Democrats who say new leadership is needed at the top.

As for Ryan, the Wisconsin Republican still has to win a floor vote for speaker in January, when all members of the House will cast ballots, including Democrats.

But he secured the nomination at a closed-door GOP conference vote Tuesday afternoon with the strong backing of his fellow House Republicans, even though a few conservative dissenters pushed unsuccessfully to delay the balloting.

Those grumblings of dissent could hardly be heard over the buzz of enthusiasm as House Republicans convened for their first regular conference meeting since Trump won the presidential election. Even though a number of House Republicans, including Ryan, had opposed Trump or were critical along the way, most said they’re now firmly on board and prepared to try to enact Trump’s agenda on immigration, infrastructure, energy and jobs.

Time for Rauner, Dems to do deal

Legislators returned to Springfield on Tuesday with important business undone.

With another election in the books, members of the Illinois House and Senate soon will take another whack at their version of governing.

So perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that, during the post-election veto session, the Democratic-controlled House and Senate will take up legislation that would require the state to spend hundreds of millions of dollars it doesn’t have.

How those votes come out will be indicative of whether legislators – Republicans and Democrats – learned anything from this week’s state and national elections.

Tuesday’s vote brought a cessation of overt hostilities between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan. Each claimed victory in their epic battle over the future of the state, and each has grounds to do so.

Madigan, who also heads the state Democratic Party, was able to defeat Republican Comptroller Leslie Munger, who was appointed by Rauner to fill the vacancy created by the December 2014 death of Judy Baar Topinka. That post will be filled by Madigan protege and former Democratic state Rep. Susana Mendoza, who has made it clear she intends to wage war on the GOP governor. Madigan also saw Democrats win the U.S. Senate seat held

by Republican Mark Kirk.

But Rauner claimed an even bigger win because his triumphs were on Democratic turf.

The GOP won five Democratic House seats while losing only one. That relieves Madigan of his supermajority by which he could overturn Rauner vetoes. The GOP also won two state Senate seats. Make no mistake about it, however. The Democrats, thanks to the state’s gerrymandered legislative districts, remain firmly in control of the General Assembly.

Of course, job one is for Rauner and Democratic legislative leaders to negotiate an end to the twoyear budget standoff. Rauner already has indicated he’s eager to make a deal. Senate Democratic leader Cullerton said he is “optimistic” about the two sides working out their differences.

Madigan, however, has indicated he still insists Republicans will accede to his way of doing things.

In other words, Madigan suggests Rauner abandon his economic growth package while acceding to Madigan’s spending plans and proposed tax increases. If he remains adamant about his myway-or-the-highway approach, the budget standoff that began in June 2015 will continue with no end in sight.

It’s time to put the people of Illinois first and work out their budget differences in an atmosphere of divided government. The cost of failing to work together is one the people of Illinois cannot afford.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Resolve in wake of Trump’s win

To the Editor: Donald Trump is claiming a mandate. On the contrary, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. The latest numbers I could find say that Clinton got 700,000 more votes than Trump.

In addition, third-party candidates got about 10 million votes across the country. Mr. Trump does not have a public mandate for his positions and proposals; he did not even reach 50 percent of the votes cast in this election.

The reason that Mr. Trump will most probably be inaugurated in January is that arcane institution, the Electoral College. Most voters voted for someone else.

The fact that homegrown hate groups such as the Ku Klux Klan celebrate his victory and foreign dictators such as Russia’s Vladimir Putin are congratulating him tells you something about Trump’s ideas and values.

It is a good thing that the majority of American voters actually did not endorse those ideas.

Probably many of the people who voted for Trump don’t support many of his misogynist, racist, Islamophobic and xenophobic statements, either.

During the next two years before the next federal election, the majority of Americans, those who support equality under the law, the separation of church and state, the rights of women, racial and ethnic minorities and LGBT people, and who want our government to help us provide food to the hungry, health care to the less fortunate, and a good education to all children need to keep paying attention and standing up for democracy and compassion.

I pledge to be active, listen to my neighbors, learn more about politics and the economy, demand honesty and transparency from my president and other elected officials, and protest if someone’s rights are being taken away. How about you?

Somehow, I feel unqualified to be a patriarch. And I just can’t wrap my mind around that.

I’ll miss Dad’s strong opinions and quiet prayers at the Thanksgiving table.

His final two years were lonely for him.

We lost my mother – his wife of nearly 60 years – to breast cancer in 2013.

And we miss her, too.

But, oddly enough, it was Thanksgiving and cancer that opened a door in my life I never expected.

Back in 2001, my mother was sched-

uled for a partial mastectomy the week after Thanksgiving.

I was afraid. A bit lost. I didn’t want to be without her.

And I didn’t feel like I had much to be thankful for.

A friend seeing I was down in the dumps set me up on a blind date – three days before Thanksgiving.

I didn’t know what to expect, but life was raw back then. We arranged to meet at a local restaurant – Chili’s. I wasn’t trying to impress.

The woman, who had just graduated from veterinary school, had kind brown eyes and an easy smile.

Her Mom was fighting breast cancer, too.

The conversation didn’t revolve around the usual first date superficial small talk.

We talked about what is really important: family.

Five hours later, the restaurant

manager asked us to leave – it was closing time.

Five weeks later, we were engaged to be married.

We now have three daughters.

Sometimes love sneaks up on you.

It was the last thing I expected.

When I look at the empty chair at the head of the dinner table this Thanksgiving, I will think of my Dad. And I’ll remember my brother and think of my mother.

But then I will look at the beautiful faces of my wife and three daughters, and I’ll remember what I learned that Thanksgiving when love surprised me: There is always something to be thankful for.

It’s time to stand and take our country back It is time for the country to heal, time for us come together.

Or so people have been telling me since last week when democracy laid the biggest egg in American history.

Well, here is my response: I have no interest in seeing this country heal.

And I refuse to come together.

Understand: If this were just about politics, I’d never say something like that. No, I’d do what you’re supposed to when the candidate you favored is defeated. Suck it up.

But my anger is not about any given policy of the new president. No, it is about him, about the election of a fundamentally unsound, unserious and unfit man, a misogynist who brags about sexual assault, a bigot cheered to victory by the Ku Klux Klan. I have no idea how to “heal” woman hating and no desire to “come together” with the Klan.

I am similarly impatient with those who say we must give the new president a chance to lead and hope for his success.

Is that what Republicans did for Barack Obama when they gath-

More to the point, the call to let Trump lead and hope for his success fails to address obvious questions: Where is he leading us? How are we defining success? Should we applaud even if he “leads” us into another unnecessary Middle East conflagration? Are we expected to be happy if his “success” comes in criminalizing abortion?

Frankly, I won’t cheer him even if he is not a disaster. In the unlikely event the man who considers global warming a Chinese hoax took action to stem that threat, I’d be happy, yes.

On the improbable chance the man who swore to repeal the Affordable

Care Act crafted something better, I would be glad, sure.

But at the end of the day, the man who did those things would still be a misogynist and a bigot.

Forgive me – or don’t; I really don’t care – if that remains a deal-breaker for me. I refuse to participate in this process of organized amnesia, to cooperate in normalizing a man who stands for everything America should not.

So what now? Well, now those of us who feel the same way must make it a priority to get off our assets and vote in 2018. And in the meantime, resist.

Sunday evening on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver offered a list of organizations that defend the causes and peoples that will be most threatened in the coming Reich and suggested you volunteer them your time and money. I think that’s a great idea, so I pass his list on to you: Planned Parenthood (plannedparenthood.org); The Center For Reproductive Rights (reproductiverights.org); the Natural Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org); the Inter-

national Refugee Assistance Project (refugeerights.org), the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (naacpldf.org); the Trevor Project for LGBTQ youth (thetrevorproject.org) and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (maldef.org). I’d also add The Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org) and the American Civil Liberties Union(aclu.org).

It’s time the majority that believes in a progressive, inclusive and compassionate America did more than just tweet about it. Nothing wrong with tweeting, but forces of exclusion, hatred and rage have overtaken the highest office in the land, so it’s also time for some old school activism. Time to march. Time to assail lawmakers. Time to boycott. Time to stand and be counted. Enough is enough.

Let’s take our country back.

SPRINGFIELD – As Thanksgiving approaches, like many folks, I find myself missing family members who have died and wondering what there is to be thankful for.

I remember munching crescent rolls with my brother, Danny, at the Thanksgiving dinner table and later arguing about politics. He died 11 years ago at age 48. But what I wouldn’t give to discuss this year’s election with him.

And I’m sure this year, as I did last, I will look to the head of the table and think of my father. He died unexpectedly in August 2015.

For 50 consecutive Thanksgivings, I watched him carve the turkey and grumble about eating a “dead bird” when the freezer was full of perfectly good ham.

We were hog farmers, after all.

And my mother would gently chide him by saying “Now, Don …”

Thanksgiving is about family.

Huskies head to E. Michigan for next-to-last game of disappointing season

A chance for a trip to a seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship game is off the table and the Huskies are no longer bowl eligible.

With two weeks to play, the Huskies are playing for pride as they hit the road to face an Eastern Michigan team that is bowl eligible for the first time in two decades at 6 p.m. today in Ypsilanti.

NIU coach Rod Carey announced Sunday that the season is over for quarterback Anthony Maddie, who helped boost the Huskies’ offense since taking over as the starter five weeks into the season. The injury, suffered in the 45-20 win over Bowling Green on Nov. 1, means that sophomore Ryan Graham again likely will be the starter.

Graham, who lost the starting job to Maddie earlier in the year, went 24 for 43 with 227 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 97 yards in a 31-24 loss to Toledo at Guaranteed Rate Field last week. Graham also spent time as the

starter last year after starting quarterback Drew Hare went out with an Achilles injury and Maddie was out with back surgery.

“I give Ryan a ton of credit from the standpoint that he was benched,” Carey said. “Call it what it is, he got benched earlier in the year. He has continued to work hard in practice, not hang his head, not feel sorry for himself and got better. I think you saw that on Wednesday night. Now, it wasn’t enough, and he’ll be the first one to tell you. That’s not only him. It was the team. We were a play here or there short.”

Once a doormat in the conference, Eastern Michigan (6-4 overall, 3-3 in MAC West) has come out of nowhere to become bowl eligible for the first time since 1995.

Ian Eriksen, soph., RB: While Eastern Michigan has missed having star running back Shaq Vann, Eriksen leads the team with 85 all-purpose yards per game, including 65.5 rushing – and has scored seven touchdowns.

DeQuan Pace, sr., DB: Pace has done a nice job of making plays for the Eagles secondary this season. He’s got three interceptions and seven pass breakups on the year.

Sycamore gave up six points in its first game, but got its first shutout the next week, a 12-0 win against Benet in 1976. They also had shutouts in 2009 (42-0 against Wheaton Academy) and 2014 against Westinghouse.

Neither team has been shut out.

Each team has had four different coaches take it to the playoffs.

For Sycamore, that would be Bert Frederick (1976, 1978), Rich Kearney (1985), Daryl Graves (2001, 2002) and Joe Ryan (lots and lots of times, starting in 2007). DeKalb was was led to the playoffs by Chuck Schrader (1980-81), Tim Holt (1989), Marty Sanders (2010) and Weckler (2013 on). For those of you scoring at home, the only coaches to lead DeKalb or Sycamore to the playoffs more than twice are the current ones.

One last good one – the first time DeKalb and Sycamore made the postseason in the same year? All the way back in 2010. They’ve done it four times since, from 2013 on.

So maybe some of this stuff will be repeated over the next week, and maybe some of it is so inconsequential it will just dissipate back into the ether.

But in prepping for both DeKalb and Sycamore reaching their respective IHSA state football playoff semifinals, we’ve come across some interesting nuggets involving the teams’ playoff histories.

So as the Barbs prepare for Prairie Ridge in a Class 6A semifinal and the Spartans get ready to face Vernon Hills in a 5A semi, here’s some random stuff that may not be important, but is certainly fun.

As always, this information is off the IHSA website. So wrong information isn’t my fault. Unless I looked at something wrong. In which case, whoops.

For starters, the Barbs and Spartans have faced five common opponents in the postseason – Darnall (currently known as Geneseo), Montini, Rochelle, Antioch and Hononegah. DeKalb beat all those team excepts Montni. The Spartans are 0-3 against Darnell/Geneseo and 0-5 against Montini. They are 1-2 against Rochelle, 0-1 against Honeonegah and 1-0 against Antioch.

What about all-time records?

Sycamore has to have a better playoff record all-time than the Barbs, right? Well, yeah. But entering Saturday’s games, DeKalb is 10-7 all time in the playoffs, while Sycamore is 18-13 – so actually their records are pretty similar.

Neither program is apparently a believer in a one-and-done playoff trip, either. The Barbs have only ever been bounced in the first round twice in their eight playoff trips.

They lost, 42-41, to Rock Island in 2010, then, 48-6, to Batavia in 2013 – coach Matt Weckler’s first year with the team. Sycamore has lost in the first round only four times in 14 trips.

Sycamore’s 55 points against Westinghouse in 2014 was the most the Spartans have ever scored in the playoffs, as was the 55-point margin of victory in that game their biggest.

The most they’ve given up in a playoff game was in a 46-27 first-round loss to Rochelle in 2002. Their most lopsided lost was last year’s 38-6 loss to Nazareth in the opener.

Former Hawk Dano is not holding grudges

mlazerus@suntimes.com WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Marko Dano doesn’t feel like the Blackhawks gave up on him. Or the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“I don’t know if they traded me because I was a bad player,” Dano said.

“I feel they got good players in the trades for me.”

Columbus received Brandon Saad in the trade that sent Dano to Chicago. And the Hawks received Andrew Ladd for the stretch run in the trade that sent Dano to his current team, the Winnipeg Jets. And although he harbors no ill will toward his old team, Dano still was looking forward to Tuesday night’s matchup with the Hawks – especially now that his old Rockford teammates Ryan Hartman and Vinnie Hinostroza have cracked

the lineup.

“Maybe a little extra motivation to play against old teammates,” said Dano, who twice played the Hawks after the trade deadline last spring. “There’s a lot of chirping against each other. I know those guys. I was living with [Hartman] in Rockford, so it’s going to be a fun game.”

Marko Dano Dano said he doesn’t try to think how things might have been different had the Hawks held onto him. With so many young guys on the roster this season, Dano surely would have been in the mix for a regular spot in the lineup. Instead, he started the season in the minor leagues before a couple of injuries forced the Jets to call him back up. In seven games, he has three

goals and an assist, and spent the past two games on the top line with the league’s leading point-scorer, Mark Scheifele, and the league’s leading goal-scorer, rookie Patrik Laine.

“I don’t want to talk about [what might have been],” Dano said. “I’m here and trying to do my best here, and I’m not thinking what could be if I would be in Chicago. That’s in the past. I had a good time there, and now I’ve just got to move on. … This is the last year of my contract. I’m trying to do my best now, and we’ll see how it goes at the end of the season.”

Circus leaves town: As much of a burden as the circus trip seems, it’s been good to the Hawks, who are 143-2 in the past three, and 25-9-3 since 2009. But nobody seemed too upset to hear that this will be the final circus trip, as the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will not return

to the United Center.

“I guess that’s nice for us that we don’t have to go on a long trip,” Patrick Kane said. “It’s always been a good trip for us. We’ve done well on the ice, and it seems like we’ve come together off the ice on these trips.

When you say it’s the last one, it’s kind of sad, but at the same time, sometimes being away from home for 14, 15 days kind of wears on you.

I guess we’ll enjoy the last one while it’s here.”

Injury report: N i c k S c h m a l t z crashed hard into the boards during Tuesday’s morning skate and left the ice in obvious pain but still played in the game.

LeBron slams Knicks’ Jackson for ‘posse’ comment

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio – LeBron James respected Phil Jackson’s unmatched coaching accomplishments.

That affection has vanished.

“I’ve got nothing for him,” James said Tuesday.

James fired back at the 11-time coaching champion and current New York Knicks president for using the word “posse” in a recent interview to describe the NBA megastar’s business associates. James said he lost all respect for Jackson, and his comments underline a larger societal issue for young African-Americans trying to succeed in business.

In the interview, Jackson, 71, said James always has demanded preferential treatment and called his departure from Miami as a free agent a “slap in the face” to the Heat organization. Jackson recalled a time when James asked for the team to stay over in Cleveland while on a road trip, a request that put coach Erik Spoelstra in a bind.

“You can’t hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your

posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland,” Jackson said in the ESPN interview .

The word “posse” struck a chord with James, who has surrounded himself with childhood friends during his career.

Jackson’s language also touched a flash point at a time of heightened racial tension in the country.

“We see the success that we have, but LeBron James then there is always someone that lets you know how far we still have to go as African-Americans,” James said Tuesday after the Cavaliers’ morning shootaround. “I don’t believe that Phil Jackson would have used that term if he was doing business with someone else and working with another team or if he was working with anybody in sports that was owning a team that wasn’t African-American and had a group of guys around them that didn’t agree with what they did.

“I don’t think he would have called them a posse. But it just shows how far we have to go. But it won’t stop us from

doing what we need to do as a group. ...

It just gives us extra motivation. But it’s still sad, though, to see that people at the top always want to try to put guys in power down.”

James was offended

by Jackson’s flippant use of a term many find degrading.

“If you go and read the definition of what the word ‘posse’ is, it’s not what I’ve built over Phil Jackson my career,” James said.

“It’s not what I stand for. It’s not what my family stands for.”

Cavs coach Tyronn Lue played for Jackson and said he doesn’t recall him ever being racially insensitive. Lue also has no intention of brokering any communication between his former coach and star player, and said James has never asked for any special treatment.

“We treat everyone the same around here,” Lue said.

Along with close friends Maverick Carter, Rich Paul and Randy Mims, James has built a sports business empire. Among the group’s most prominent successes are landing James a lifetime

contract with Nike worth almost $1 billion and launching a film and TV production company that has partnered with Warner Bros.

Carter handles James’ business affairs, while Paul serves as his agent – and for several other top players – and Mims works with the Cavs. They formed LRMR marketing shortly after James turned pro, and the 31-year-old threetime champion was criticized for surrounding himself with friends.

“I’ve tried to put my guys in position to where they can walk in a meeting and go places and they don’t need me because they got to a point where they’ve done their homework,” James said.

“They’ve studied on what they want to do, and they can hold a meeting without me because of the respect that they have and the knowledge they have. That’s just 12 years of hard work and dedication that we put to each other. I know Phil’s in a position of power in our sport, but to criticize me and my guys over that is nonsense.”

The Cavs play the Knicks on Dec. 7 in Madison Square Garden, a game surely to be intensified by the Jackson-James drama.

PORTLAND – Fred Hoiberg is no Larry Bird.

Doug McDermott might be thankful for that.

With McDermott left back in Chicago for at least the start of the “Circus Trip’’ in dealing with a second concussion in that last two weeks, Hoiberg talked about the changes in how that injury is being handled today compared with when he played.

“Well I remember I had a couple of them,’’ the Bulls coach said after the Tuesday shootaround. “I had one in Indiana and I think I missed about five, six, seven games. When you get hit, it’s hard to describe the feeling that you have. You’re just completely out of it. I don’t remember two days from what I remember, and then [then Pacers coach] Larry Bird said, ‘Are you ever going to play again?’ So I suited up the next game and played. It was a little different rules back then.’’

And a much different protocol.

“Yeah, that was the protocol, when your coach said, ‘Are you ever going to play again?’ ”Hoiberg said with a laugh.

“So yeah, again the rules are in place

and it’s a good rule to have obviously with all the things that have happened with concussions all across the board in all sports. So again, we’ll continue to monitor Doug and we’ll get him back when he’s feeling right.’’

The game against Portland will be the second game McDermott has missed because of concussion, with the latest injury coming Saturday, after he fell to the court and hit his head.

While Hoiberg wasn’t going to speculate on the idea that a second concussion so soon could mean a longer sit time for McDermott, he did admit that it is concerning.

“Sure, it’s obviously a concern for everybody when you have two like he did,’’ Hoiberg said. “As far as what happens from there, I’m not a doctor, I can’t say exactly what it means as far as when you have two this close together. He obviously bounced back very quickly from that first one, so I would say that the first one was diagnosed as a very mild concussion.

After making substantial offseason splashes the past two years adding big-name talent, the White Sox appear poised for a major selloff this offseason.

There’s little question the Sox are willing to listen on offers for first baseman Jose Abreu, third baseman Todd Frazier, relievers David Robertson and Nate Jones, and outfielders Adam Eaton and Melky Cabrera.

But it seems most teams are interested in left-handers Chris Sale and Jose Quintana.

Reports across the country Tuesday had teams already lining up for Sale trade talks, notably the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves seemed to have stepped up their interest. They join the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Texas Rangers, who all began showing deep interest during July’s trade deadline.

The question is: How much of a rebuild are the Sox interested in staging this offseason? It has been a closely guarded secret.

A full rebuild – a Cubs-style tanking that could take five years – likely would involve moving Sale, despite his age (he will be 28 on March 30) and his reasonable contract (he’s owed $12 million in 2017, with team options worth $12.5 million in 2018 and $13.5 million in 2019).

Sale would bring the haul of young talent the Sox need to begin their rebuild. And the feeling around baseball is that the Sox would be willing to deal Sale if a team overwhelms them with a package of young talent in return.

That’s where the Braves seem to stand out.

The Braves will be opening a new ballpark in 2017, and they have already made two big win-now moves in adding veteran pitchers Bartolo Colon and R.A. Dickey in the past week. And the Braves have a ton of young talent, start-

Turkey day questions

hanksgiving is all about tradition, so it’s only natural that we field a lot of the same questions each year about

the same things. But it’s OK. These things come up again and again for a reason. We’ve gathered some of the most common questions here for your easy perusal.

Should I roast a turkey breast for two people?

Size-wise, a turkey breast is definitely a good fit for a small crowd, though for a pair, you’ll probably want to aim for something close to 6 pounds. Even then, you’ll have some extra for subsequent meals. To satisfy those who go for dark meat, consider getting a small whole turkey.

You might have especially good luck with a local farmer. If the ideas of a whitemeat-only breast or too-big whole turkey don’t appeal to you, there are other options. You might consider a duck, which is smaller, with rich, gamy flavor. Or go the ultimate route for single- or small-serving poultry and cook Cornish hens.

How big of a turkey should I buy?

The Agriculture Department suggests one pound of turkey per person. We’ve previously suggested about 1½ pounds for each diner to allow for leftovers.

When to buy and how to store your turkey.

When you buy the bird depends on whether you’re going with fresh or frozen. A raw, fresh turkey should be stored for no longer than two days in the refrigerator. In theory, a frozen turkey can last indefinitely. But for the best quality, use it within a year. Of course, if you have yet to buy one for this year, you have nothing to worry about in terms of storage time.

Should I brine the turkey?

Brining helps poultry stay moist and tasty. (Kosher or self-basting birds should not be brined.) Some people choose to dry brine their turkey – rub it with salt, basically. In that situation, salt draws the meat’s juices to the surface of the bird. The juices then mix with the salt, forming a brine that then is reabsorbed by the meat. A few years ago, deputy Post Food editor Bonnie S. Benwick tried both methods and decided she preferred a wet brine, which required less effort and resulted in more uniformly moist and seasoned meat. When you remove the turkey from the brine, make sure you pat it thoroughly dry to get crisp skin. But consider this: You also can achieve a moist, flavorful turkey without brining at all.

Why a turkey breast?

Even dark-meat fans can appreciate the moist, tender yield of a bone-in turkey breast.

The key is in choosing a cooking method that will do it justice. A turkey breast can be just the ticket for a small group, as well as an alternative to roasting a second bird when you’re planning to feed a crowd. A real selling point: It can be done in advance.

How can I make gravy in advance?

Roast extra turkey wings until deeply browned and crisped. Toss them into a pot of at least four cups of broth with your favorite aromatics: celery, onion, fresh herbs, a bay leaf, whole black peppercorns. For interest, add 1/2 cup of dry red wine or Madeira or unsweetened apple cider. Cook, strain and discard the solids.

Then you can melt eight tablespoons of unsalted butter in a separate saucepan and whisk in 1/2 cup of low-protein flour, like Wondra or pastry flour, to form a smooth roux; it needs to be cooked over medium heat for a few minutes to lose its floury taste. Whisk in your enriched stock and cook until thickened, which should take more than 20 minutes.

Season, cool, refrigerate or freeze. Once the bird comes out of the oven, you might want to whisk strained pan drippings into the reheated gravy, then season with salt and pepper.

How do I make a perfect pie crust?

A few pointers: Keep things cool. Rotate the crust 90 degrees periodically as you’re rolling it. Make your crusts in advance. And if something does go wrong, roll with it. Do your best, and call it a day. Smile, because, hey, you’re going to be eating pie.

What can I make ahead?

Cranberry sauce: Most can be refrigerated up to a week.

Turkey: Start brining the day before.

Sterilize your jars by washing them in hot soapy water, then rinse them and let them dry in a cool (275 degrees F.) oven.

Or use dishwasher-clean jars fresh from the machine.

Heat the oil in a large deep pan over a medium heat. When hot, add the mustard seeds and cinnamon stick. When the seeds pop, add the onion and cook for around 10 to 12 minutes or until the onion is translucent and turning golden.

Add the cranberries to the pan along with the sugar, lemon juice and white wine vinegar and follow with cloves, pepper, cumin, chili and salt. Stir and bring to a boil before leaving to simmer for around 20 minutes until the chutney thickens.

Bottle in sterilized jars and refrigerate. This chutney will keep for up to 3 weeks.

Although Thanksgiving is the quintessential American holiday, some of my American friends and I celebrate it here in London every year.

A few years back, after cooking a turkey curry, I learned the hard way never to mess with the traditional roasted turkey, the star of the show. Since then my contribution is always to spice up the sides, quite literally. This year I’ve narrowed my focus to cranberries.

There are only a handful of cranberry farms in the UK partly because they only can grow under very special conditions, like acidic peat soil and fresh running water, which are more commonly found in the U.S. So when I see them in London supermarkets, I get very excited.

My favorite thing to do with them, on the run up to our Thanksgiving dinner, is to turn them into a rich sticky chutney. A little sugar helps counter the extreme acidic sourness these fresh berries can have, while a few warming spices such as cloves, black pepper and red chili add just enough heat and zing to perk up the turkey.

Happily, this chutney is not just for Thanksgiving. It works really well in cheese sandwiches, and alongside ham and game meats.

It can be prepared a few weeks in advance too, giving you more time to have a holiday on actual Thanksgiving.

Dear Dr. K: For 20 years, I’ve substituted

artificial sweeteners for sugar in my coffee, and switched to diet soft drinks to avoid obesity and the diseases overweight people are prone to, like Type 2 diabetes. Now I hear new research says that’s a bad idea.

What is going on?

Dear Reader: Here’s what’s not confusing: More than a modest amount of sugar each day is not good for you. Nothing’s changed there. The sweet tooth many of us have (I plead guilty) leads us to eat too much sugar.

Sugar contains easily absorbed calories. That makes it harder to maintain or achieve a healthy weight. It also increases our risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. Sugar-sweetened soft drinks and fruit juices are particularly bad actors.

The development of no-calorie artificial sweeteners, such as saccharine, sucralose and aspartame, seemed like a godsend.

Like you, I switched from regular drinks to “diet” drinks a long time ago. Artificial sweeteners taste as sweet as (or sweeter than) sugar, but contain virtually no calories. What’s not to like?

In previous columns, I’ve said there was some evidence consuming artificial sweeteners might increase our appetite for sugar-containing sweets. That definitely is not a good thing, if true. I still regard it as unproven.

But a scientific study published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature set me back on my heels. If other scientists confirm this work, it has important implications for all of us. To tell you what the study showed, I first need to explain a little biology.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Many foods contain carbohydrates (“carbs”). Carbohydrates resemble a chain with multiple links. When they enter our gut, the links in the chain are separated by digestion. Table sugar is a simple chain: just two links, easily separated. It’s the single links that mainly are absorbed into our blood. The most common is called glucose.

When your doctor measures your blood sugar, glucose is what is being measured.

Any food, say a slice of an orange, contains calories. But those calories add to our weight, and influence whether we might develop diabetes, only if they are efficiently broken down into single links – glucose – and then are absorbed into our body.

Our intestines contain trillions of bacteria of different types. Some types are very good at breaking up carbohydrates into glucose; other types are not. If you’re a person with lots of the first type of bacteria living inside you, every slice of orange you eat will lead to more calories getting into your blood.

The recent study presents evidence indicating artificial sweeteners may encourage the growth of the types of bacteria that generate more glucose – and, hence, lead us to absorb more calories. In other words, while the sweeteners don’t contain calories, they may cause us to absorb more calories.

If other scientific studies confirm these findings, I will be further lowering my modest consumption of artificial sweeteners.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend and I have been together for four years. I love him deeply, but I have lied to him about certain things. I feel guilty about it, but I can’t bring myself to tell him the truth because he has a temper.

One lie I told was I was laid off from my previous job, but I really quit. He didn’t want me quitting, but I did it for my own good. I was having a nervous breakdown, and all I felt were negative thoughts when I worked there. Although I found a better job months later, I never summoned up the courage to tell him the truth.

We don’t live together. I’m 24 and he’s 26.

a freshman in college, blessed to have an internship in the office of a nonprofit organization. As time goes by, I am being given more responsibilities. One of them is writing letters for various purposes – thank-you letters, invitations, congratulatory letters, etc.

When I was in high school, I never was taught the format for how to write these kinds of letters. I get confused about spacing and how to address people with titles. It’s a shame technology has left my generation so clueless on how to do important stuff. Is there a resource for letter writing available from you? South might have responded one heart, but with game-forcing values he was right to keep all of the suits in play. Six or seven diamonds might have been the best contract if North had a minor two-suiter. North’s two-club rebid guaranteed at least a six-card suit and denied a four-card major. South bid what he hoped he could make.

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: one spade, two hearts, one diamond and three clubs. After taking the spade ace on the third round of the suit, the optimist unblocks his club king, plays a heart to dummy’s ace, then cashes the club ace and queen. However, when West discards on the third club, the contract can no longer be made. Yes, if clubs are 3-3, South wins 10 tricks, but that is against the odds.

The pessimist sees that he needs only five club winners, not six. He overtakes his king with dummy’s ace and cashes the queen, happy to see the jack appear from West. Declarer drives out the club 10 and claims.

Note, though, that he also succeeds if clubs are 3-3, just not with an overtrick.
