Winning kept Trump off front page POLL YESTERDAY’S To use the diction of our soon-to-be president, it has been a tremendous, tremendous sports season of late in DeKalb County.

Local teams have been winning so much, I’m almost sick of winning.

First, the Cubs won the World Series, an amazing feat that many of us never thought we would see. It was big league. There was a tremendous crowd in Chicago for the parade, very few arrests. It was very classy, and we put it on our front page for several days and everyone was very, very happy.

Then on Saturday, both DeKalb and Sycamore pulled off wins against higher-ranked opponents to advance to the state semifinals, the Barbs in Class 6A and the Spartans in Class 5A. The Spartans defeated top-ranked Sterling, 29-22. Sterling was a powerhouse that had yet to lose, or even play a close game this year.

That was a huge team win for Sycamore, really tremendous, so terrific that it made our front page for Monday’s edition.

The Barbs also defeated a higher-ranked opponent Saturday in Cary-Grove, proving yet again that you can’t always believe the polls. It’s their first trip to the state semifinals since 1980, when Jimmy Carter was president (a disaster!).

We’ll be writing more about both teams in the days ahead as they prepare for their shot at the state finals.

In between the Cubs and local prep football teams winning, we also had the NIU Huskies in the first football game at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. The Huskies lost that one – I’ll let you know later if I accept the result – but we wanted to make a point to turn the cameras and show the people at the game. There was a huge crowd of more than

Some have speculated that the reason that President-elect Donald Trump has not appeared on the front page is because the Daily Chronicle is just a small part of the dishonest media. Others have thanked us for not putting Trump there because they didn’t want to face the results of a very open and successful presidential election.

In reality, this is a local paper and we put local news first. Sometimes the biggest local stories are in sports. Occasionally, we put national stories on the front page, but that probably happens least often.

We did, however, write a story the day after Trump’s election talking to people about their reactions, including Dennis Sands, the Shabbona resident and former DeKalb County Board chairman who went to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland as a delegate this summer.

Also, we’ve had numerous stories about the campaign and its result on a national level from The Associated Press.

Expect to see the new President Trump on the front page after Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, if not sooner. There’s no chance he’ll be competing with the Bears.

U.S. Army veteran Richard Westlake, who served in the Vietnam War, said two of his high school friends, U.S. Army veterans Eatterson Byrd Jr. and Rodney Drake, were pictured on the “Freedom Isn’t Free” wall along with others who died in battle after attending Sycamore High School.

Ellwood House Museum prepares for holiday tours, open houses

DeKALB – The historic halls and rooms of the Ellwood House Museum are decked with shades of burgundy, blue, purple and green in preparation for upcoming holiday tours and open houses.

“I told [volunteer decorators] to use a peacock feather as a rule of thumb,” said Scott Tews, public programs and development manager.

Tews said this year’s color scheme features darker, mostly cool colors, while last year the more traditional holiday colors of red and gold were used.

He said between 75 and 100 people, including 10 to 12 groups and some individuals, volunteered to decorate the museum during the first two weeks of November.

Guided decorated mansion tours begin Tuesday and last through Nov. 30, except for Thanksgiving. Tours will be at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.

Holiday open houses will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2 and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 4.

Tickets for all events are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 17, and free for children younger than 6.

Guided tour tickets are available at

the door, and open house tickets can be bought in advance at ellwoodhouse. org.

An entire room in the museum is dedicated to an assembly of Dickens’ Village miniature houses and figurines donated by a community member.

“It’s pretty intense,” Executive Director Brian Reis said. “It has every possible little house you can imagine.

We have some people just come to see that.”

Several creative takes on Christmas trees are placed throughout the museum, including a tree decorated with peacock feathers in the master bedroom and a small stack of green

library books shaped into a tree in the second-floor hallway.

“People in the community come back each year to see something different,” Reis said.

After a group of student volunteers from Kishwaukee College decorated the dining room, museum staff members set the table with dinnerware used by the Ellwood family, Reis said.

“The guided tours are definitely chock full of history,” he said. “For the open houses, guides will be stationed in each room.”

Reis said about 880 people attended the tours and open houses last year, and he expects between 800 and 1,000 visitors this year.

LOCAL NEWS Genoa man arrested after shots hit neighbor’s house Have a news tip?

browland@shawmedia.com GENOA – A 29-year-old Genoa man faces a felony gun charge after hitting a house and narrowly missing a person while firing guns in a field south of Kingston.

Shawn R. Hamm, 29, of the 100 block of South State St., Genoa, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, a crime typically punishable by one to three years in prison.

A homeowner in the 28800 block of Pleasant Hill Road called the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office around 3:30 Shawn R. p.m. Saturday to report Hamm that his home had been hit with bullets at least twice. After meeting with the homeowner, deputies went to 28944 Five Points Road, where the shooting was coming from, according to court records.

Deputies found several people outside the house there, along with guns and empty beer cans, court records show. There was no berm or backstop in the direction of the gunfire, police said.

Hamm told police that he had been shooting a Savage Axis .243-caliber rifle to the east and that he was the only person who had been shooting it.

The house that was hit was directly to the east across a field. While deputies were there, Hamm picked up a shotgun and fired it, according to the report.

At the victim’s house on Pleasant Hill Road, investigators found what appeared to be two spots where the home had been struck with bullets.

A man who lived at the house told investigators that as he opened a sliding-glass door, he saw a round hit the door and then hit the house directly above his head.

At a bond hearing Monday afternoon, Assistant State’s Attorney David Weichel asked that if released, Hamm be ordered to surrender his FOID card and any firearms to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, not drink alcohol and not have any contacts with alleged victims in the case.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert set Hamm’s bond at $2,000. He told the judge he would be able to post $200 to be released on bail. Hamm also said he planned to hire a private attorney.

Hamm is next due in court Dec. 13.

BRIEFS DeKalb woman charged with murder in death of boyfriend

DeKALB – A 26-year-old woman was charged with murder in connection with the death of her live-in boyfriend, DeKalb police said Monday.

Police said Kela Moss, 26, of 419 S. First St., went to the police station at 12:22 a.m.

Monday and told an officer that there had been an incident at her home Kela Moss and there was a dead man inside her apartment. She gave the officer the keys to her apartment and gave permission for officers to go inside, police said.

Officers went to the apartment, and found a 25-year-old man dead inside. An autopsy performed Monday found that the man had been strangled.

Police said the man was Moss’ boyfriend and that he also lived in the apartment. They did not release his name Monday.

Moss was being held at DeKalb County Jail on $5 million bond.

DeKalb firefighters rescue dog from fire

DeKALB – Firefighters rescued a dog from a home after an accidental fire caused $55,000 worth of damage and displaced the residents.

Firefighters were called to 1228 Gifford St., DeKalb, at 10:49 a.m. Sunday for a report of a fire. When they arrived, smoke was coming from an attached garage, according to a news release sent Monday from DeKalb Fire Chief Eric Hicks. No one was injured. Firefighters forced their way into the home. No people were inside, but firefighters rescued the family dog, according to the release.

While searching the home, they found the fire was contained to the garage.

Firefighters cut through the garage door and found the garage filled with smoke.

After they put out the fire, firefighters ventilated the garage and made sure the fire hadn’t spread to the attic of the home.

Investigators determined the fire started behind a freezer in the garage.

Damage was estimated at $55,000.

Born October 25, 1937 in Prentice, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Erma (Hunziker) Chester, he graduated from Aurora College in 1960 and Married Laurel Hoch of Aurora that same year. He began his career working in his father’s bookkeeping business, which led to a lifelong career in accounting.

George enjoyed woodworking, photography, gardening and taking his children camping and fishing. He also enjoyed hymns and classical music. George loved the Lord.

He was passionate about reading and studying the scriptures. George was a prayerful supporter of others, and had a heart for missionaries serving abroad.

George is survived by his children, Jan Chester of Isabella, Missouri, Randy (Brenda) Chester of Waterman, Chuck (Robin) Chester of Genoa, and Jim (Lisa) Chester of St. Joseph, Michigan; grandchildren, Jessica (Josh) Wilkin, Kathleen (Josh) Feith, Garrett, Alaina, Lauren, Emma, Jacob, Daniel and Samuel Chester; his brother, Donavan (Judy) Chester of Aurora; and sister, Marsha (Richard) Doemland of Jackson, Michigan; and his nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; and his children’s mother, Laurie Chester.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 19 at 10:30 a.m. at Shannon Baptist Church, Shannon. Pastor Tim Lehman will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Burial will follow the funeral at Cranes Grove Cemetery in Baileyville.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in George’s name.

She was born July 9, 1914 in Paw Paw, MI and was the daughter of John and Nellie (Kwasniak) Haluch.

She married Joseph Finn on February 23, 1936 in Paw Paw MI. They settled in Amboy, then to DeKalb in 1948.

Vicki worked at GE and Del Monte until 1953. In 1968, the family acquired Pizza Villa, where she was the heart and soul of the restaurant. Ma Finn continued to make the lasagna and spaghetti until 98 years old.

She was very active at St. Mary’s Church assisting the priest for daily mass for over 20 years and was an active member of the Catholic Daughters. She was an avid gardener and loved nature. She is famous for her potato salad, sugar cookies and banana bread. Ma Finn loved to watch sports and saw her Cubs win the World Series.

She is survived by her six children, Gene (Bev), Don (Karen), Richard (Diane), Larry, Janette (Mark), and John (Diane). 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and her sister, Josephine Ruzick; and brother, Chester Haluch.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph Finn; her daughter-in-law, Susan Finn; her sisters, Genevieve Jaros and Stella Gap; and her two brothers, Frank Haluch and Stanley Haluch.

Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb with Father Dean Russell officiating. Burial will be immediately following the service at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in DeKalb. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 3:00pm to 7:00pm at Finch Funeral Home in DeKalb with a Catholic Daughters service at 2:45pm. A visitation will also be held on Thursday November 17, 2016 at 10:00am until the time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family to be established at a later date.

Marlyn Burkart, founder of Marlyn’s Majorettes, dies

SYCAMORE – Marlyn Burkart, who founded the award-winning Marlyn’s Majorettes and Drum Corps that marched in the first 53 years of Sycamore Pumpkin Festival Parades, died Monday. She was 84.

Burkart, of Sycamore, died at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Bloomington.

Arrangements are pending at Olson Funeral and Cremation Services in Sycamore.

Marlyn’s Majorettes and Drum Corps was a staple in the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival parade until Burkart retired the group in 2014.

The group won more than 1,000 honors in international, national and state competitions. Performances included the Orange Bowl, the Indy 500, the Grand Ole Opry, the Chicago Christmas Parade and New York’s World’s Fair.

Burkart was the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival parade grand marshal in 2009. In 2002, she was honored with the Clifford Danielson Outstanding Citizen Award and the Sycamore Athena Award. She was also a former president of the Sycamore Park Board.

“She was a special Sycamore lady and impacted so many young lives, even beyond Sycamore,” Mundy said.

“Her Majorettes are known from coast to coast.”

Mundy said Burkart’s enthusiasm never waned even as she got older, and her students learned the value of hard

work and practice through her parade corps.

“She was the epitome of a caring adult who just wanted kids to grow up to be contributors,” he said. “Many kids whom she mentored are now successful leaders in their community.”

Tom Oestreicher, a Sycamore resident, said he knew Burkart for 45 years,

and the best word to describe her is “dedicated.”

“I wrote a book on [Pumpkin Festival founder] Wally Thurow, and when I interviewed her, she said the parade was one of the highlights of her year every year, especially when it was a reunion of all her past students,” Oestreicher said.

Jerry Malmassari, who has been on the Pumpkin Festival Committee for 30 years, said he remembers Burkart as “a lady that truly cared about the community.”

He said Burkart was one of the people who helped to increase interest in the Pumpkin Festival in its early days.

“She was always a promoter of the Pumpkin Fest,” he said. “She and her group were always part of it and made it what it is.”

Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said in the 14 years she knew Burkart, she had always been “a friend to the chamber and the business community.”

“Whenever we had an event, the Majorettes would participate to make it better; they were there for us,” Treml said. “So many young ladies went through her program and probably have wonderful memories and lessons about confidence, caring about yourself and teamwork.”

Not only is she the first woman to win the spectator division, she is the first to even place in the top five against the men.

St. Charles residents Mallory Jackson and her twin brother Joe Jackson, Jr. started racing at Sycamore Speedway when they were 16.

This year, at 24 years old, Mallory Jackson won the spectator championship, becoming the first woman to win the men’s division.

“Ten years ago a woman never even tried to seriously race against the men,” said Bonnie Streit, a friend of the family and a former racer herself.

Streit used to race in the powder puff division for many years before Mallory Jackson started racing.

“When Mallory started [racing], I could see she had talent,” Streit said.

“I was so happy when she broke that barrier.”

Mallory Jackson started out in the powder puff division, racing in cars that her father, Joe Jackson, Sr. and brother had built for her.

She won the championship in the powder puff division in her fifth year of racing, in 2013.

Once she had conquered that division, Mallory Jackson decided she wanted to try racing in the spectator

very proud of his daughter, although he did admit to being a little nervous at first. He’s more relaxed these days.

“She can drive a car,” he said.

He said that from the time Mallory and her brother Joe were 11 years old, he would take them out to their cousin’s farm to race his stock cars around the barn. He said they were competitive then and they still are.

Joe Jackson, Jr. began racing competitively when he was 14 years old.

Their grandfather had also been a driver.

“Racing has been in our blood,” he said.

Joe Jackson, Jr. has always built his own cars as well as helping his dad build Mallory’s. He prides himself in building the cars that help Mallory win, as well as making sure that they are safe.

“It’s nice to see my car beat previous champions,” he said.

Joe Jackson, Jr.’s passion is racing demolition. He describes it as going into a pit with 10 other cars and smashing into each other until the last car’s standing, although Streit said there’s quite a bit of skill involved.

“It’s a good frustration reliever,” Joe Jackson, Jr. said.

STATE Dems cite ‘schedule conflict,’ miss budget meeting

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s vision of a swift, post-election budget compromise is off to a rocky start after a key Democratic leader cited a last-minute “schedule conflict” as the reason for missing a meeting the Republican governor requested.

Republican leaders who met with Rauner on Monday blasted Democrats for their absence and said they need to be engaged to move forward.

“It is completely inexcusable,” said Republican Sen. Christine Radogno, the GOP’s Senate leader.

Rauner said last week he was “cautiously optimistic” when he asked House and Senate leaders to meet to begin work on ending a 16-month budget standoff, but the absence of ruling Democrats shows how challenging it continues to be to find compromise.

The political standoff has led to cuts to social service providers, some of whom have shut down altogether, and an uncertain future for higher education institutions that are receiving less funding than they have in the past.

The governor called the meeting days after the results from Election Day, when Republicans diminished the Democrats’ numbers in the Legisla-

Illinois, California soldiers killed in Afghanistan attack

FORT HOOD, Texas – The Department of Defense on Monday identified two U.S. soldiers killed in an explosion at a U.S. airfield in Afghanistan.

The department said 20-year-old Pfc. Tyler R. Iubelt of Tamaroa, Illinois, and 30-year-old Sgt. John W. Perry of Stockton, California, died of injuries inflicted by an improvised explosive device. Two American contractors also died in the explosion Saturday morning. An additional 16 U.S. service members and one Polish soldier were wounded.

Iubelt and Perry were assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Special Troops Battalion, 1st Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.

CHICAGO – Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the outcome of the U.S. presidential election won’t affect Chicago’s commitment as a sanctuary city for immigrants.

Police: Van driver cited for killing boy, injuring woman

CHICAGO – Several traffic citations have been handed to the driver of a van that allegedly struck and killed a 2-year-old boy and injured a woman as they crossed a Chicago street.

Police say 48-year-old Alexander Vasquez was cited with failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to reduce speed and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Vasquez is accused of hitting Noah Katz and the woman on Sunday afternoon as they crossed a street in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood.

Noah and the woman were taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where Noah was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Sheriff: Fisherman finds human torso in Illinois River

RUSHVILLE – Authorities in western Illinois said a human torso was found in the Illinois River.

Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Redshaw told WGEM-TV that a commercial fisherman found the torso and called police about 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The torso was where the river and Sugar Creek meet south of the small village of Browning. The sheriff said a rescue team and the county coroner pulled the torso from the water.

An autopsy was planned Monday in Bloomington.

Schuyler County Coroner Terry Millslagle said the torso appeared to be a man’s remains, and it looks as if limbs were removed. The coroner said the remains look like they had been in the river at least a week to 10 days. The sheriff said the FBI and state officials were involved in the investigation.

Trump considers woman, openly gay man for posts

WASHINGTON – His nascent administration already under attack, President-elect Donald Trump was considering Monday whether to inject new diversity into the GOP by recommending a woman to lead the Republican Party and an openly gay man to represent the United States at the United Nations.

The moves, among dozens under consideration from his transition team, follow an intense and extended backlash from Trump’s decision on Sunday to appoint Steve Bannon, a man celebrated by the white nationalist movement, to serve as his chief strategist and senior adviser.

“After winning the presidency but losing the popular vote, President-elect Trump must try to bring Americans together – not continue to fan the flames of division and bigotry,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said.

She called Bannon’s appointment “an alarming signal” that Trump “remains committed to the hateful and divisive vision that defined his campaign.”

His inauguration just 66 days away, however, Trump focused on building his team and speaking to foreign leaders. He remained sequestered in Trump Tower in New York.

Inexperienced on the international stage, the Republican president-elect spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone.

His transition office said in a readout that

“he is very much looking forward to having a strong and enduring relationship with Russia and the people of Russia.” Trump has spoken in recent days with the leaders of China, Mexico, South Korea and Canada.

At the same time, Trump was considering tapping Richard Grenell as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He would be the first openly gay person to fill a Cabinet-level foreign policy post. Grenell, known in part for aggressive criticism of rivals on Twitter, previously served as U.S. spokesman at the U.N. under President George W. Bush.

Trump was also weighing whether to select Michigan GOP chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, a niece of chief Trump critic and 2012 presidential nominee Mitt Romney. She would be the second woman ever to lead the Republican National Committee – and the first in four decades.

“I’ll be interested in whatever Mr. Trump wants,” McDaniel told The Associated Press on Monday, adding that she was planning to seek the Michigan GOP chairmanship again.

Appointing McDaniel to run the GOP’s political arm could be an effort to help the party heal the anger after a campaign in which Trump demeaned women.

The appointment of Grenell, who has openly supported same-sex marriage, could begin to ease concerns by the gay community about Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s opposition to same-sex marriage during his time as Indiana governor.

Obama urges Americans to give Trump a chance

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama on Monday abandoned his dire warnings and dark predictions about his newly elected successor and urged Americans to give President-elect Donald Trump time to rise to the daunting responsibilities of the office, breaking sharply from his Democratic allies who have quickly condemned Trump’s first major decisions.

In his first extended remarks on the election that pounded his party and his legacy, Obama sought to reassure an anxious world and nation about his successor’s commitments to alliances, at times appearing almost sanguine about a future Trump administration.

Although he would not explicitly say Trump was qualified for the office, he said he believed the first-time officeholder would do his best to unite the nation, calling him pragmatic. He refused to wade into a political firestorm over Trump’s decision to name a farright conservative media mogul as a top adviser. And he expressed hope that the weight of the presidency will force Trump to overcome his shortcomings.

“He has won. He’s going to be the next president and regardless of what

Obama’s refusal to criticize his suc-

cessor was a 180-degree reversal from the rhetoric of his campaign takedowns.

Only a week ago, as he campaigned for Hillary Clinton, Obama said Trump was “woefully unprepared for the job” and couldn’t “handle the nuclear codes.”

Obama’s latest remarks bore little resemblance to the calls for resistance coming from other Democrats and

many of Obama’s supporters. As they come to grips with Trump’s surprising win, many Democrats have seized on a call not to accept or “normalize” the actions of a man who ran a divisive campaign that included charges of racism, sexism and other offensive rhetoric and actions.

But Obama, who was the target of some of that rhetoric, has embraced the role of national hand-holder. Both in private and in a brief statement last week, Obama has suggested that Democrats should buck up and move on. He’s cast Trump’s election as in line with the usual zig and zag of politics.

On Monday, as he prepared to embark on a three-nation trip abroad, Obama went so far as to vouch for Trump and his foreign policies. Although Trump campaigned as a harsh critic of NATO, Obama said Trump sounded a different note when they met in the Oval Office last week.

Obama said the Republican “expressed a great interest in maintaining our core strategic relationships,” including “strong and robust NATO” partnerships.

“There is enormous continuity ... that makes us that indispensable nation when it comes to maintaining order around the world,” Obama said.

He was born October 18, 1937 in Elmhurst, IL. The son of Ray and Ellen Meisner.

Ray worked as a machinist for FermiLab, retiring after 28 years of service. He owned the Whizzer Motorbike Shop in DeKalb for many years.

Robert Earl Petersen, passed away in his home on November 7, 2016 after a brief illness.

He was born to Anna and Charles Pe-

tersen in DeKalb, Illinois on April 4, 1928. He attended DeKalb high school where he played on both the football and basketball teams.

After graduation he enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He attended Colorado College where he met and married the love of his life, Doris. Shortly after graduation Robert and Doris moved to Rockford, Illinois where they lived and raised six children together. Robert went on to earn his Master’s degree from Rockford College and became a teacher for Rockford District 205.

He is predeceased by his five brothers and sisters and his eldest daughter, Janie Petersen.

Robert is greatly loved and missed by his wife of 64 years, Doris; children, Daniel (Cindy) Petersen, Kristine (Andy) Voigt, Karen Alexander, Kathryn (Drew) Wickham, William (Sally) Petersen; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will remain “sweet-as-ever” to his family.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, there will be a private gathering for immediate family only.

Lucille June (Linneman) Haseman of Waterman, IL passed away on November 12, 2016 at Prairie Crossing Living and Rehabilitation Center in Shabbona, IL. Lucille was born to William and Emma (Poehls) Linneman on June 11, 1927 in Elk Grove Township. Lucille married Robert E. Haseman on September 17, 1949.

She is survived by seven children, Larry (Cathy), Alan (Martha), Richard (Molly), Brad, Patricia McNutt (David), Timothy (Lisa), Dean (Beth); 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; her brother, Donald Linneman (Emily); her sisters-in-law, Vivian Gosch, Irma Haseman, and Marion Haseman; many nieces and nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert, on August 11, 2016; sisters-inlaw, Arlene Meyer and Bernice Haseman; brothers-in-law, Leslie Haseman, Howard Haseman, Robert Meyer and Robert Gosch.

Lucille worked for the Safety Council in Downtown Chicago in her younger days, but when she and Robert began their family, for quite a few years she was a homemaker, keeping up with her family was enough to

SYCAMORE – Another banking option soon will be available in Sycamore.

First State Bank, which is headquartered in Mendota, is expanding to a location at 1940 DeKalb Ave. Bill Davey, president of northern operations, said the bank broke ground in Sycamore in October and is scheduled to open the new branch in June 2017.

The bank has branches throughout central and northern Illinois, including DeKalb, Waterman and Shabbona.

Davey said the location of the new branch will be an advantage for residents of Sycamore, DeKalb and neighboring communities.

“We wanted to get a location more convenient for the cutsomers in both DeKalb and Sycamore,” he said.

Davey said the new branch will border DeKalb and Sycamore, and it will be near many surrounding businesses.

“Most of the business that’s between DeKalb and Sycamore now is out there on DeKalb Avenue, so we looked for locations there, and we found one that

was right next to Texas Roadhouse,” he said.

Davey said locally owned banks such as First State Bank can be more responsive with the community, and customers won’t have to deal with loan committees out of the area like they would with some larger banks.

“We’re much more responsive to loan requests,” he said. “We have customers apply for loans with us, and they’re treated very quickly and their questions are answered quickly. We are able to work with our customers and help them more efficiently.”

The Sycamore branch will offer a full service bank, including a drive-up window, lobby, safety deposit boxes and 24-hour ATM, Davey said.

He said First State Bank has done well with its DeKalb branch at 155 N. Third St., and he hopes the Sycamore branch will have similar success.

“Some of the local banks have been bought out by larger banks, and the people really are looking for a community-minded bank such as ourselves,” Davey said. “We’ve picked up a lot of their customers, and I’m sure we’ll continue to do so.”

Upstaging acquired the 538 Sycamore St. building in Genoa to accommodate its need for additional space to support its stage lighting and entertainment transportation business.

Hines Lumber acquired and improved a manufacturing facility in the Bull Run Industrial Park to produce floor and roof trusses in the new Kirkland Components Plant.

DC Trash leased the former Kishwaukee Forge building in Cortland to expand its waste removal and recycling business. The company plans to construct a new building on an adjacent site on East North Avenue.

All Around Pumping also will construct a new building on East North Avenue to accommodate its growing sanitary waste disposal business.

And, Theisen Roofing acquired the former American Cold Headed building on Loves Road to expand its roof construction, maintenance and repair business.

The past 18 months have been very productive for industrial and commercial development in DeKalb County.

Capital Investment approached $100 million during 2016, after exceeding $130 million during the prior year.

More than 600,000 square feet of industrial space was developed during 2016 following the commencement of 1.4 million square feet in 2015. This development resulted in the creation of more than 700 new jobs, the largest total in a decade. As a result, unemployment remained below 6 percent for the second straight year.

Ideal Industries completed its new $18 million, 220,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in the Sycamore Prairie Business Park. The facility is producing innovative new products, such as the Audacy wireless energy management system used at Wrigley Field.

In addition, the Ideal-NIU Intrapreneurship Program was launched at the DeKalb plant on East Lincoln Highway. Northern Illinois University students working in interdisciplinary teams will help bring new Ideal technologies to market by preparing business, production and marketing plans.

3M opened its new $40 million distribution center in Park 88. Expedited plan review and permitting by the city of DeKalb enabled the 987,000-squarefoot structure to be completed in just 12 months.

An Intergovernmental Tax Abatement Agreement with the city of DeKalb and six taxing bodies enabled the project to compete with alternate sites. As a result, 3M selected DeKalb over Atlanta, resulting in the retention of 600 jobs.

Jekyll-Hyde conduct sours governance

What does “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” published in 1886 by Robert Louis Stevenson, have to do with American post-election politics 130 years later?

More than you might think.

In his novella, Stevenson created fictional characters that represent the fight between good and evil within the human heart.

Dr. Henry Jekyll, a basically good man, makes the mistake of mixing and drinking a potion that unleashes his inner demons, transforming him into Mr. Edward Hyde, a ruthless evildoer.

Over time, Jekyll loses control of his wicked alter ego. In the end, he loses his life.

In American politics, we see basically good people who, after tasting the potion of power, find themselves stooping to contemptible lows to retain it.

Their campaign charges, countercharges and general tactics focus on attacks, attacks and more attacks on the characters and records of their opponents.

We’ve seen one major presidential candidate call the other “crooked.”

We’ve seen the second major presidential candidate describe her opponents’ supporters as “deplorables” and her opponent as “unfit” for the presidency.

Names have been called, characters have been besmirched, and doubts have been raised about the abilities of each to serve.

And that’s just the race for the White House.

On down the ballot in Illinois, negative campaigning has been seen and heard.

The worst example: a lewd, faked nude photo of a female state representative was mailed to people across her central Illinois district.

The problem with negative campaigns is their poison doesn’t disappear after Election Day – not for the candidates, and not for their supporters.

Although the campaign has ended and voters have chosen their leaders, Mr. Hyde can’t be banished as easily as Dr. Jekyll might like.

After being sworn in, elected officials are supposed to serve the public through the collaborative process of representative government.

The evil unleashed by negative campaigns often interferes with good governance. We refer to gridlocked government in Washington and Springfield as evidence.

As Lord Acton observed, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Let the Dr. Jekylls and Mr. Hydes of the political world take note: Be very wary of the potion of power.

“If men were angels,” James Madison wrote, “no government would be necessary.” President Barack Obama, who has tried to govern this country for the past eight years, is no exception to Madison’s realistic assessment of human nature.

We have had our differences with Obama from time to time. However, it bears notice – emphasis, really – that in the days since what can only be described as a traumatic election result for Obama and his party, as well as a critical moment for the entire world, the president has led his country with magnificent dignity.

This is no matter of mere optics. The Founders firmly believed a republic could not long survive without civility, tolerance and grace. Madison, again: “To suppose that any form of government will

secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical idea.”

It would be equally chimerical to suppose that a people could become virtuous unless its leaders model virtue, especially in difficult times, which is why the Founders united behind George Washington, the epitome of virtue in his day, as the first president.

And modeling virtue is precisely what Obama has been doing. To a divided nation, both electoral halves of which still undoubtedly were stunned at what had transpired, the president preached unity and understanding, with evident sincerity, not a trace of rancor, and in terms that were plain but free of condescension: “We have to remember that we’re actually all on one team. This is an intramural scrim-

mage. We’re not Democrats first. We’re not Republicans first. We are Americans first. We’re patriots first. We all want what’s best for this country.”

He magnanimously praised President-elect Donald Trump for his own temperate concession speech. That is to say, he rose above the ugly insults – “born in Kenya”; “founder of ISIS” – that Trump had hurled at him. And, implicitly, the president rose above the shots he himself had taken on the campaign trail. Obama endeavored instead to remind people that there is life, a whole world of it, beyond this turn of events, and indeed beyond politics itself, through which we must all travel with “a sense of unity; a sense of inclusion; a respect for our institutions, our way of life, rule of law; and a respect

for each other.” Obama carried himself with the same grace, and with the same calming focus, while meeting with Trump at the White House, and as he addressed a Veterans Day audience for the last time as president.

Haters gonna hate, as the song says; and we express these thoughts fully cognizant that there are some Americans so committed to loathing this president they will not appreciate how he has just embodied republican virtue before their very eyes. For everyone else, including non-Obama haters who nonetheless voted for Trump, Barack Obama has provided an example of conduct under pressure worthy of close study and, we hope, emulation.

One of the issues President-elect Donald Trump said he wants Congress to act on is immigration. That’s not entirely surprising, given that he spotlighted just that issue, in incendiary terms, after gliding down that escalator in the Trump Tower and announcing he was running 17 months ago.

Last week, when many assumed Hillary Clinton would be elected – perhaps even with a Democratic Senate – many liberals also highlighted immigration legislation as an immediate priority.

They looked forward to passage of something very much like the Gang of 13 bill, which passed the Senate with bipartisan support in 2013, and the very similar bills that passed the Senate in 2006 and were squelched there in 2007 by the legislative malpractice of the new majority leader, Harry Reid.

Those bills provided for immediately giving legal status to millions of immigrants, plus provisions purporting to strengthen border control and workplace enforcement – but critics thought they would prove as ineffective as similar provisions in the bipartisan 1986 law.

It seemed reasonable that a Democratic Senate would advance such a bill and that House Speaker Paul Ryan, sympathetic to it in the past, would allow it on the floor, where it would get enough Republican votes for passage.

That’s now off. The interesting question is, what kind of bill could a Republican Senate and House pass?

First principle: It must be acceptable to Trump.

VIEWS Michael Barone Such a bill wouldn’t provide for the immediate deportation of 11 million undocumented immigrants or a ban on Muslim immigrants. In the campaign, Democrats seized on Trump’s statements backing such moves and – understandably, for partisan campaigners – ignored his later statements dialing back from those positions.

Mainstream media – less understandably, seeing as they’re supposed to report the facts – ignored those statements, too, even though they were set forth with careful precision in the speech he delivered Aug. 31 in Phoenix immediately after his respectful meeting with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico City.

In that speech, Trump reiterated his promise to build a wall along the Mexican border but said decisions on giving legal status to noncriminal undocumented immigrants would be made “in several years, when we have accomplished all of our enforcement and deportation goals.” And he would not bar all Muslims but suspend “visas to any place where adequate screening cannot occur.”

The Genoa-Kingston grad had 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team in an 80-75 season-opening win Friday against Lewis.

In his first collegiate game, the freshman guard played a team-high 42 minutes.

• • • Sophomore Jace Kitchen had a team-high 16 points and five rebounds for Rock Valley in a 78-65 loss Saturday to South Suburban. The 6-foot-6 forward from DeKalb is in the Golden Eagles’ (2-1) starting lineup and played more than 28 minutes against the Bulldogs.

• • • While the upcoming winter season is time for golfers to make swing changes, DeKalb graduate Maggie Russell has plenty to celebrate after her freshman campaign.

On the season, Chapman saw 612 minutes on the pitch in 13 matches with one start. She faced 48 shots, made 18 saves and allowed only three goals. She had a 2-1 record.

• • • With a 3-0 win against Minnesota Morris on Saturday in the first round of the D-III tournament, the Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s soccer team continued its winning ways. The Warhawks won their fourth WIAC tournament title in the past five years and are regional hosts.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois freshman guard Eugene German averaged 33.5 points a game as a senior in high school.

He scored two Friday in his NIU debut against Indiana State.

However, the highly touted guard got back to scoring double digits in a lopsided 99-55 win against overmatched Roosevelt (NAIA) on Monday night at the NIU Convocation Center.

German, who was a three-star recruit out of 21st Century Charter in Gary, Indiana, and led the state in scoring his junior and senior seasons, made his first four shots and finished with 14 points in 19 minutes on 5-for-7 shooting, including 2 for 3 from 3-point range against the Ramblers.

“My coach told me to be patient and that my time will come,” said

German, who went 1 for 3 with two points in the 80-78 overtime win over Indiana State. “I’m pretty used to playing 32 minutes a game, playing the whole game. I’m not used to taking a back seat, but I’m willing to take the challenge. I adjust pretty well to things.”

German also had a steal and a breakaway emphatic dunk late in the game Monday that brought loud cheers from the crowd.

German is one of two freshman guards from Indiana to get minutes for the Huskies (2-0) this season. Against Roosevelt, 5-foot11 Justin Thomas went 4 for 4 with eight points in 16 minutes.

The elimination element has raised the pressure and forced drivers to answer the call when the season is on the line. Kevin Harvick twice won must-win races in 2014 on his way to the title, Joey Logano has done it twice this year alone, including Sunday when his victory put him in the finale.

It absolutely is true that the final four drivers will not always represent the most deserving teams. Byron learned that the hard way in the Truck Series’ inaugural Chase. The most dominant teams don’t always deliver when the pressure is at its highest; although Harvick had performed time and again when his back was against the wall, Stewart-Haas Racing couldn’t come up with the dominating performance it needed Sunday for him to advance.

That’s called sports, and there’s nothing contrived about it.

It’s not always fair, but sports are the greatest reality programming out there.

Anything can happen – and did to Kenseth at Phoenix! – and that’s why we watch.

Joey Logano should have made the finale last year but didn’t. Same goes for Matt Kenseth, who was two laps away from victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway until a caution created a series of events that caused him to crash.

He was all but assured of a slot in this weekend’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway one moment, last in the Chase standings the next.

There have been arguments about the Chase since it was first introduced in 2004.

Fans felt it was contrived and that the traditional season-long point champion was the truest way to decide a title. The format has been tinkered with several times since, but its most radical adjustments came three years ago when NASCAR implemented eliminations. That format this year was brought to both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series for the first time.

Every sport has upsets and underdogs.

Every sport has a Cinderella story every now and then that drums up interest.

NASCAR very much needed that element when it introduced the Chase, and chairman Brian France has long trumpeted the desire to have his sport in a position to create “Game 7 moments.”

The entire country talked for days about the seventh game of the World Series and the Cubs’ dramatic victory. Any leader in their right mind would want that same nail-biting tension for their sport.

They want to see crushing defeats, career-defining victories, magical moments.

So no matter what longtime fans believe, France did the absolute right thing in creating the Chase. Yes, people claim they stopped watching NASCAR because of the Chase. They blame France for turning to gimmicks over tradition, claim the Chase has ruined the sport they once loved.

Well, those people are clinging to a past that never is coming back. NASCAR has plenty of problems, and NASCAR does many things incorrectly, but the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship is not one of them.

The Chase in its first year had five drivers eligible to win the title. It pitted teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson against each other in one of the fiercest championship battles in NASCAR history.

Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery has been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances.

“Obviously, we’re very disappointed,” coach John Fox said. “I think he’s fairly embarrassed about it, but we’ll support him and welcome him when he gets back after serving his suspension.”

Jeffery released the following statement: “As a professional athlete, I have been careful about what I put in my body. I took a recommended supplement to combat inflammation. Unfortunately, this supplement contained an ingredient that was on the NFL’s banned substance list.

“I take full responsibility, and I’m deeply upset with myself for not doing the proper research on this supplement. I want to apologize to my family, the Bears organization, my teammates, and Bears fans. I will work hard to earn back the respect and trust of the Bears nation and look forward to being back on the field.”

Jeffery, who is playing on the franchise tag this season, has 40 catches for 630 yards and one touchdown, having started all nine games. He will be a free agent after the season. Jeffery’s salary for 2016 is $14.6 million, so this suspension will cost him $3.4 million.

The Bears already are without WR Kevin White, who is on injured reserve but could return in December. Fox mentioned the team might be able to activate Marquess Wilson from the physically unable-to-perform list to get more depth at the position in Jeffery’s absence.

Tight end Zach Miller also figures to be a bigger part of the passing game.

Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery has been suspended four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing substances.

“I think it’s not good at all. It [stinks] not having your top weapon on offense,” Miller said. “We have to figure out ways to be better, to do better collectively. But I don’t think you really replace Alshon Jeffery that easily.

We’ll have to do it as a group.”

Fox said he and the team found out Monday.

“Probably the same, disappointment,” he said of the reaction of the

players. “All teammates, I think at the end of the day, they’re supportive, but I know Alshon’s embarrassed by it, and I’m sure disappointed would be a good word for the rest of us.”

Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks described it as an “unfortunate situation.”

“You feel for your guy,” he said.

“That’s your teammate. That’s somebody that you respect and love having on your sideline and you love seeing in

the game. It’s a tough situation, but it’s one that we’re going to have to accept and move forward through.”

Jeffery will be eligible to return to the active roster Dec. 12 after the Bears’ Week 14 game against the Lions.

“Well, I hope he stays in shape,” Fox said about Jeffery’s suspension. “He’s done a pretty good job of that in the past.

I think he understands how he’s got to go about it. I’m fairly confident he will.”

NFL Network report: Long to miss rest of season

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Three-time Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long will miss the rest of the season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Long was carted off the field during Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers with an aircast on his right ankle. He was on crutches and in a boot after the game.

Fullback Paul Lasike landed on the back of Long’s ankle, rolling up on it at the end of a play in the second quarter.

Bears coach John Fox addressed the media Monday, but said at the time the doctors had yet to make a full determination on the severity of the injury.

Long had missed one game this season with a triceps injury and was playing through a labrum injury he suffered in August that kept him out of practice for the last two weeks of the preseason.

“Tough stretch for him, battling through some things,” tight end Zach Miller said. “The guy shows a ton of toughness. Athletic as they make them on the O-line. He’s a cornerstone of what we do.”

The Bears signed Long to a four-year extension in September. Ted Larsen replaced him during the game at right guard, but the Bears could go to Eric Kush, who started for guard Josh Sitton last month but was inactive Sunday.

Coach Elliot Whitefield’s take: “I was hired late in the process, so I missed the summer work, and we aren’t at a level I know these girls can compete at. But I’m extremely impressed with the maturity of the girls and how helpful they’ve been in welcoming me.

There are some great leaders, and as long as you have kids that work together and don’t care who gets the credit, amazing things can happen.”

The Lowdown: In the short time Whitefield has been working with this DeKalb team, it has shown him what great potential it has. Overall, the Barbs are a small team, so pressuring the ball and moving around the floor without the ball will be important. The team is filled with leaders and has chemistry.

Sycamore

Coach Adam Wickness’ take: “We’re implementing a lot of new systems, but it is similar to what coach (Brett) Goff ran previously. I think it will be important for the girls to come together as a group. There’s a lot of good chemistry on the team this year. We aren’t a super deep team, but all the girls we have really wanted to be here and are committed.”

The lowdown: In Adam Wickness’ first year as varsity coach, he will have to deal with the growing pains of new faces on the team with a lot of seniors graduated from last year’s team.

The system he is teaching is similar to what Goff ran, so the learning curve could be small.

The team also welcomes Emma Stice and Ella Holland, who played on the soccer team last year. Incoming freshman Kylie Feuerbach is being called up to varsity, where she is expected to make some noise after she impressed her coaches over the summer, and could be one of the team’s leading scorers.

Genoa-Kingston

Our conference and schedule is a little tougher this year, so, hopefully, we can continue to do that.”

The lowdown: The Cogs have an experienced group, with a number of players having seen multiple years at the varsity level already.

Henkel said as long as the team takes care of the ball and rebounds, it has a chance to win a lot of games. The experience is led by Galauner and Nay, who are on pace to break school records that include career points, 3-pointers, free throws, steals and assists.

Coach Doug Brewington’s take: “First and foremost, we’re looking for the senior leadership this year. You can have all the talent in the world, but without that senior leadership, it’s tough to win ball games. You could tell with this group of seniors, from Day 1, there is a sense of urgency. They’ve all played together since they were 9 or 10 years old, and they realize this is the last hoorah, so the sweat and effort is definitely there.”

The lowdown: Brewington is fortunate enough to return his entire team from last season, which is something that doesn’t happen too often. This H-BR group has played together for a number of years, and the Royals are hungry to make their senior season a successful one. Brewington and his team believe that it can use its depth to match up with any team on the schedule.

Kaneland

Coach Ernie Colombe’s take: “We feel that there is potential on this team. We lost eight seniors last year, but we feel that there is some firepower with this team on offense.

We know we can score better when we share the ball. We’ve been good defensively the last few years, so we’ll see how many steps forward we can take this year. The keys will be to share the ball and find a way to get stops defensively.”

The lowdown: Kaneland has been experimenting and placing girls in new positions and roles leading up to the season. Kaneland graduated eight seniors from last season but have a handful of returning players playing in new roles and positions, as well. While they are experimenting and finding where the pieces fit, Colombe knows he has a talented team that hopes to be playing its best basketball late in the season.

A single serving of vegetables, for example, may provide more than 100 different phytonutrients. The crucial interaction of these phytonutrients is generally lost when you’re getting only one or two substances in a pill.

To maximize your intake of phytonutrients: • Eat phytonutrient-rich foods frequently throughout the day. This helps keep blood levels of these components constant and ultimately more effective.

• Eat at least five to nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables.

• Create a meal around vegetables and fruits. Fill half your plate with color.

• Savor the skins of the fruits and vegetables you eat, assuming you like the taste.

The skins often are rich in phytonutrients.

• Regularly include a wide array of whole grains in your diet.

• Cook your vegetables if that’s how you prefer to eat them. Most phytonutrients are heat-stable.

Dear Reader: Let’s begin by breaking “phytonutrients” into its two parts. First, “nutrients.” These are chemicals in our environment that we need to get inside our body, usually through eating foods that contain them. Nutrients are a necessary part of our body chemistry. Indeed, many are necessary for the life of most living things.

Nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They also include metals – such as iron, copper, iodine and zinc – and vitamins. I’d call oxygen and water nutrients, too.

Now to “phyto.” The word comes from the Greek word for “plant.” And that’s primarily where you can find phytonutrients – in plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dried beans and nuts. These natural compounds give plants their color, flavor, smell and texture.

Phytonutrients are powerful and healthy substances to include in your diet.

There is growing evidence they play a crucial role in helping to maintain human health and prevent a number of diseases, such as macular degeneration and some cancers.

There are as many as 2,000 known phytonutrients. Some of the better-known phytonutrients are isoflavones (in soy); lignans (in flaxseed and whole grains); carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (in carrots and dark, leafy greens); lutein and lycopene (in brightly colored fruits and vegetables); and flavonoids (in red-blue tinted fruits).

Choosing colorful foods (M&Ms don’t count) helps ensure you get as many phytonutrients as possible. Typically, the
