Barbed Wire Betties open fourth season in DeKalb

news@daily-chronicle.com Ashley Rodriguez of DeKalb hadn’t put on a pair of roller skates since she was in middle school.

But after having her second child two years ago, she was looking for an activity where she could be active and make friends.

So after hearing about the Barbed Wire Betties, DeKalb County’s all-female roller derby team, Rodriguez, 31, decided to see what the buzz was all about. And now, Rodriguez is a proud member of the team, which opened its fourth season at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb on Saturday night.

“I wasn’t an experienced skater, but it just looked like a bunch of strong, independent women and a close-knit group,” said Rodriguez, whose roller derby name is Killem Dafoe.

“I wanted to get some aggression out in a controlled environment. You sweat a lot and it’s just a blast, fun to play and fun to watch. And I like that my kids can see women in an empowered role, doing something fun.”

The Barbed Wire Betties faced the DuPage Derby Dames Outrage in Saturday’s bout, which the Betties won, 214-147. In a roller derby bout, five members of each team are on the

track at one time. Each team tries to block the opposing team’s jammer from breaking free from the pack and lapping them, which is how points are scored.

Sean “The Senator” Tikkum, the Betties’ coach, said the team was very successful last season, and is looking to improve and grow this upcoming year by playing larger, more competitive teams from the around the Midwest.

“It’s a growing sport. These women are providing local entertainment and role-modeling,” he said. “We’re a nonprofit athletic organization that shows women can be athletic and physical. These athletes are out here because they love the sport. I love encouraging them to grow and do their best.”

Bill and Linda Sherman of DeKalb had never seen roller derby before, so they wanted to check out Saturday’s bout.

“We thought it would be fun,” Linda Sherman said. “I’ve seen the Betties at community events and wanted to see what it’s all about.

Plus, we like to support local events like this.”

Fundraiser aims to find permanent spot to display fire engine from 1923

news@daily-chronicle.com About 150 community members filled the Sycamore fire station Saturday morning to eat pancakes and to take a closer look at the newly restored 1923 Stutz Fire Engine.

The breakfast was a fundraiser to help find a permanent location to display the engine. Retired Fire Chief Gene Ege, who also is president of the Sycamore Fire Preservation Company, said the group recently completed the bodywork on the truck after it was dormant for several years.

“We formed in 2000 when we first got word that the fire truck was available from a collector to bring back to Sycamore,” Ege said. “It was the first motorized fire engine to pump water in Sycamore. The truck they had before this was a chemical truck – like a fire extinguisher on wheels. This was the first engine that would actually hook to a hydrant and pump water.”

It was in operation from 1923 to 1957.

“In 1966, it was sold at a public auction because they didn’t have room to keep it,” Ege said. “It went through three or four different collectors until 2000.”

A collector in Indiana contacted the city and gave Sycamore the opportunity to buy it.

“It still had our name on the hood,” Ege said.

The group raised money and bought the truck in August 2001. Ege said that when 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina hit the country, the restoration efforts for the truck were put on hold.

“Money was needed elsewhere, but then three years ago we started fundraising again,” Ege said.

Ege said the entire cost of the project has been donor funded; no city money has been used. Marty and Sons Body Shop in Sycamore worked on the $25,000 restoration project for a year and a half.

“It was in the Pumpkin Parade this year on a flatbed tow truck, but our goal is to drive it through the Pumpkin Parade,” Ege said. “We’re working with the Sycamore History Museum to come up with a permanent display site to show it so the public can go see it at any time.”

The Stutz Fire Engine was originally purchased by the city in 1923 for $10,250. Jerry Didio of Marty and Sons Body Shop worked on the restoration. the museum board and the preservation group are in discussions to find a permanent location to display the truck.

“It’s an important piece of Sycamore’s history, so we’re trying to be creative and come up with different ideas to get a permanent home for it,” Donahoe said. “We’re in the early stages, but I think it’s a good fit.”

Four students from Cornerstone Christian Academy helped the group set up for the event. Harris Chen and Devon Vance said they thought the fundraiser was for a neat cause.

“It looks really cool,” Chen said of the engine.

Sycamore resident Matt Listy sold shirts and hats at the fundraiser. He said he’s been interested in the truck since it returned to Sycamore and looks forward to when it returns to the Pumpkin Parade.

“I just want to see it running. It belongs to Sycamore,” he said.

Cortland Lions Club hosts Turkey Trot

news@daily-chronicle.com Tyler Brackemyer, 8, was determined to defend his title as the winner of the Cortland Lions Kids’ Fun Run on Saturday morning.

The third-grader at Cortland Elementary School won the race last year, and managed to hang on to win the 1-kilometer race once again.

“I have tough competitors and I never know if I’ll beat them, but I really like the medals and trophies this year because they’re blue and yellow,” said Tyler, whose twin brother, Brady, came in third place overall. “I run really fast.

I’m usually nervous at the start, but I’m confident when I finish the race.”

About 200 runners and walkers participated in the Cortland Turkey Trot, a 5-kilometer course that was held shortly after the kids’ run. This is the seventh year of the race, which benefits the Cortland Lions Club.

Chris Fowler, organizer and Lions Club member, said the race has grown to become the third-largest in the county, thanks to the help and support of many local organizations.

“This is a family event, and it’s a nice, flat course,” he said.

“All the money stays in Cortland and supports community improvement,” Fowler said. “It helps with eyeglasses and hearing aids for seniors and supports the library.”

Nicole Bork, secretary of the Lions Club, said the race is a big deal to her because she lives in Cortland, and likes how the proceeds go back into the community.

“This is a fun, local event, and we’re all close in Cortland,” Bork said. “This race is nice because it’s competitive, but not as competitive as other races.

There’s not as much pressure to win.”

This was Lucy Riley’s first time participating in the Cortland kids’ race, and she said she was very excited to run.

“I thought this would be fun,” the first-grader at West Elementary in Sycamore said. “I like that it’s healthy for you, and I just feel good when I run.”

Kosova Wilkins of Cortland brought her 6-year-old daughter, Eliana, to run along with her in the 5K race. Wilkins said Eliana has seen her run in races before and was excited to try it for herself.

“She likes to be healthy; she’s very active,” Wilkins said about her daughter. “She wants to be a runner, and I find 5Ks fun and challenging. And this is great running weather.”

“I need an incentive to keep up with running because I’ve been doing other types of exercise,” he said. “I have friends who ran today, so it’s a social event, too.”

The Turkey Trot was good practice for Daniel Martin, 11, who is a member of Sycamore Middle School’s cross country team. Daniel said he’s done several races, but this was his first time at the Cortland race.

“Racing is fun because you get to see how good you are,” he said. “I didn’t do as well as I wanted to, but I did OK. I had a lot of fun though.”

Jose Cordero, 51, of Cortland was very excited for the Turkey Trot because his son, Roberto Cordero, 12, ran with him for the first time.

“When I run, I just think of how thankful I am for my health, and I dedicate my run to those who aren’t able to run. I run for them,” Jose Cordero said.

Roberto said he could’ve done better, but he had fun running.

“I’m not really a good runner, but my dad says I’m fast. I might do another one; we’ll see,” the eighth-grader at Huntley Middle School said.

Scott Brackemyer, the father of Tyler and Brady, was proud of both of

his boys for running in the kids’ race, which he called one of the best races in the area.

“I was cheering on the kids. I’m proud they’re doing something active,” he said. “They’ve seen me run and they’re following my example.”

ROBERT EARL PETERSEN Born: April 4, 1928 Died: November 7, 2016

Robert Earl Petersen, passed away in his home on November 7, 2016 after a brief illness.

He was born to Anna and Charles Petersen in DeKalb, Illinois on April 4, 1928. He attended DeKalb high school where he played on both the football and basketball teams. After graduation he enlisted and served in the Navy during WWII. He attended Colorado College where he met and married the love of his life, Doris. Shortly after graduation Robert and Doris moved to Rockford, Illinois where they lived and raised six children together. Robert went on to earn his Master’s degree from Rockford College and became a teacher for Rockford District 205.

He is predeceased by his five brothers and sisters and his eldest daughter, Janie Petersen.

Robert is greatly loved and missed by his wife of 64 years, Doris; children, Daniel (Cindy) Petersen, Kristine (Andy) Voigt, Karen Alexander, Kathryn (Drew) Wickham, William (Sally) Petersen; multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will remain “sweet-as-ever” to his family.

In keeping with Robert’s wishes, there will be a private gathering for immediate family only.

Police: Harassment incident being treated as a hate crime

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Police say a racial harassment incident first reported by a student on social media this week is being investigated as a hate crime.

According to a safety bulletin from Northern Illinois University police, the incident occurred between noon and 1 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of North Annie Glidden Road.

“Four individuals in a silver pickup truck made racially charged comments to an individual walking near the 100 block of North Annie Glidden Road,” the bulletin said. “During the encounter, the victim observed a firearm in the vehicle, but the firearm was never pointed at the victim.”

Daniel Eiland, in a post on Facebook at 2:27 p.m. Thursday, said he was a student at Northern Illinois University and wrote, “Today I’m just randomly walking and a truck drove by with a confederate flag and Nazi flag. I shook my head, so to the

“The DeKalb police are taking this incident and all like it with great concern,” DeKalb Police Chief Eugene Lowery said in an email. “There is no place in our community for racially motivated criminal acts or harassment of any kind.”

“We decided we would capture one if we could because there would be a lot of information there that’d be vital to the war effort,” Smith said. “We had a recorder put in to intercept messages; the Germans thought it was gone.”

Henry Joesten lost a younger brother in the Battle of the Bulge, a monthlong battle in the European theater in which allied forces were temporarily cut off. The fight resulted in 67,000 casualties for the U.S., according to the National World War II Museum.

“It was hell,” Joesten said. “He was only 19 years old.”

Don Shoo thought he, too, would be one of the 291,557 service members who didn’t survive the war.

“Well, it’s one of those things. Days and days and days, you thought you were going to die,” said Shoo, who was an Army sergeant. “Many times, I said,

‘Lord, I know that I’m going to die today because you can’t do this for as long as I have.’ ” Although he said he was happy to arrive home within three days at the war’s end, he was mostly numb.

“It took quite a while to get back at that,” Shoo said.

The lifetime prevalence of PTSD among World War II and Korean War veterans is 53 percent, according to a 1997 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry.

Guests participated in a raffle, 10 percent of which went toward the Honor Flight program, and learned about the Interstate TDR, a World War II assault drone that was produced in DeKalb, historian Roger Keys said during a presentation.

The unmanned plane had a 50-foot wingspan and could travel as far as 500 miles with the use of a monitor, Keys said.

A captured German U-Boat, winter during the Battle of the Bulge and World War II assault drones were among the memories shared by more than a dozen World War II and Korean War veterans who were honored Saturday during a local school’s annual fundraising dinner.

St. Mary School’s Guardian Angel program board held its second annual dinner Saturday in the school’s gymnasium, 210 Gurler Road, DeKalb, to raise money for students in need of tuition assistance.

Kindergarten through eighth-grade tuition at St. Mary School is $3,682. Almost $5,000 was raised for students at last year’s dinner, said Shari Admonis, Guardian Angel board member.

Like last year, board members invited World War II and Korean War veterans for complimentary dinners and to share the experiences of a generation that is dwindling every day.

“I totally appreciate all that they do,” Admonis said. “Some of them, they don’t know – when they’re signing up – they don’t know if they’re coming back or not for the freedoms that we have.”

Out of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, 696,000 remain, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Almost 1.6 million Korean War veterans are alive, according to the same figures.

Trump voters back leader for various reasons

CHICAGO – The voters who made possible Donald Trump’s victory included people who consider themselves moderates and came around to Trump after supporting other candidates.

Some live in the “blue wall” of states in the Upper Midwest that, until Tuesday, backed every Democratic presidential candidate since Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1992. Some voted for Democrats in the past. Some kept their Trump support secret until after the election to avoid scorn from acquaintances and co-workers.

Here’s a look at voters who helped usher in a Trump presidency, and why they did so: ••• In Michigan, Patrick Burke supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the GOP primary but “jumped on in full support” of Trump as he bested the field.

The 60-year-old automotive and business consultant lives in suburban Detroit’s Macomb County, which was home to the “Reagan Democrats” in the 1980s. In 2012, Obama carried Macomb County by 4 percentage points. Trump enjoyed an 11 point-plus margin there.

Trump stands for “making sure that if you work hard that your government is there to help you rather than hurt you,” Burke said, noting that Trump’s message “of prosperity and reducing the debt and a strong military and reforming immigration really resonated” with blue-collar workers.

Cullerton agrees to attend Rauner’s budget meeting

SPRINGFIELD – A least one Democratic leader in Illinois’ legislature is accepting Gov. Bruce Rauner’s call for a post-election meeting to discuss ending an epic budget standoff.

A spokesman for John Cullerton said Sunday the Illinois Senate president will be at Monday’s meeting. John Patterson said the Republican governor called it, so it’s up to him to set the agenda. He added that “we are interested in seeing what the governor has to say.”

A drive through Burke’s city Wednesday found more Trump signs than Hillary Clinton, and some took their allegiance to the extreme: One home’s front lawn featured a large wooden basket with life-sized, scarecrow-like people sticking out and a sign labeling it “The Deplorables,” – a reference to Clinton’s description of half of Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables.” The lawn display also featured a sign that reads: “Climb In There is Room For All.” Burke said Trump isn’t perfect, but he believes the most divisive and vulgar rhetoric “was just all talk.”

••• Iraq War veteran Rebecca Zbichorski, 28, of Milwaukee, is a first-time voter who supported Trump because “America needs a kick in the behind.”

She said she sees Trump as a “regular type of guy” who doesn’t care what anyone thinks, which made him the best candidate to give U.S. government the “shake-up”

Health care was her top issue as a voter, she said. Identifying neither as liberal or conservative, she would prefer Canada-style national health care.

She notes Trump once spoke favorably of Canada’s system before his current support for working with Congress to repeal and replace President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Her family, she said, has had a “nonstop hassle of getting insurance” under Obama’s health care law.

She unapologetically keeps a copy of Trump’s book “Crippled America” in full view of her co-workers. It was a way to broadcast her position, which she sums up with a social media meme, minus the hashtag: “I’m voting for Trump.

“He’s the slap in the face. He’s the wake-up call,” Zbichorski said. “Let the man do what he’s got to do.”

“My grandfather always said that what we need is a businessman in the presidential office, and that’s what Donald Trump is,” Barlow said as she stood behind the bar at the local American Legion post in Naperville, readying for a busy night that included a meat raffle.

Illinois is a reliably left-leaning state, and Clinton, who was born in suburban Chicago, easily won it Tuesday. She also won DuPage County, where Barlow lives. But Trump resonated with voters elsewhere in a way Mitt Romney didn’t, taking 12 more Illinois counties than the 2012 GOP nominee.

Hunter finds body of missing woman in crashed pickup

PEORIA – Authorities said a central Illinois woman reported missing about two weeks ago has been found dead in her crashed pickup truck along a Peoria County road.

County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll told The Peoria Journal Star that a hunter found Jamie Harroun’s body Saturday morning in the wreckage of her truck along a road in western Peoria County.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Sunday. Ingersoll said the Mackinaw woman’s pickup truck apparently “left the road, went through a field, down a hill and struck an embankment.”

She said Harroun may have been headed to Pekin at the time of the crash. Harroun was last seen Oct. 31 in Galesburg.

Bannon, Priebus named to Trump’s White House staff

WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump made his first two key personnel appointments on Sunday, one an overture to Republican circles by naming GOP chief Reince Priebus as his White House chief of staff, the other a shot across the bow of the Washington establishment by tabbing Breitbart news executive Stephan Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor.

The two men had made up the president-elect’s chief of staff shortlist, and while Priebus received that job, Bannon’s post also is expected to wield significant clout. The media executive with ties to the alt-right and white nationalist movement was given top billing in the press release announcing their appointments.

Trump’s hires were, at first glance, contradictory, though they fit a pattern of the celebrity businessman creating a veritable Rorschach test that allowed his supporters to see what they wanted. Priebus, who lashed the RNC to Trump this summer despite some intraparty objections, is a GOP operative with deep expertise of the Washington establishment that Trump has vowed to shake up. He has close ties to House Speaker Paul Ryan, a fellow Wisconsinite.

“I am very grateful to the president-elect for this opportunity to serve him and this nation as we work to create an economy that works for everyone, secure our borders, repeal and replace Obamacare and destroy radical Islamic terrorism,” Priebus said in the statement an-

nouncing his appointment.

Bannon, meanwhile, helped transform the Breitbart news site into the leading mouthpiece of the party’s anti-establishment wing, which helped fuel the businessman’s political rise.

Ryan has been one of his most frequent targets.

“Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory,” Trump said. “Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”

Neither Priebus nor Bannon bring policy experience to their new White House roles. Chiefs of staff in particular play a significant role in policy making, serving as a liaison to Cabinet agencies and deciding what information makes it to the president’s desk. They’re often one of the last people in the room with the president as major decisions are made.

Trump’s adult children, who serve as influential advisers to the president-elect, are said to have been concerned about having a controversial figure in the chief of staff role and backed Priebus for the job.

In announcing the appointments, Trump said Priebus and Bannon would work as “equal partners” – effectively creating two power centers in the West Wing. The arrangement is risky and could leave ambiguity over who makes final decisions.

Trump has long encouraged rivalries, both in business and in his presidential campaign.

He cycled through three campaign managers during his White House run, creating a web of competing alliances among staffers.

Donald Trump, the statesman Congratulations, Mr. Trump. You’re hired.

The presidency is the biggest job America has to offer, and come Jan. 20, it’s yours. We wish you every success. All of us who live in this great nation depend on strong leadership from you now.

In winning the election you have proved many millions of your supporters right. They said you heard their concerns, while Hillary Clinton and establishment figures in government, media and pop culture did not.

We’ve questioned whether your temperament, experience and values are right for this office. We’d like nothing better than to be proved wrong.

You made a strong start with your elegant victory speech early Wednesday. You pledged “to bind the wounds of division” and to be “president for all Americans.” Those are noble goals, ones we share.

As you build your Cabinet, we hope its members reflect those aspirations, that they indeed work with you in building a government that works for everyone.

We, too, will use this time to consider anew what lessons we take from this long campaign and the results it produced on Election Day. Will establishment figures, from both the Democratic and Republican parties, who dismissed the concerns of Trump supporters re-examine their hostility, and look for ways to bridge cultural chasms?

Now that the election is over, it’s imperative that all Americans, including Republican leaders, broad-minded Democrats and Trump supporters alike, seek out their “better angels” and recommit to what’s best for America.

We exhort them to chart a way forward that truly will make Americans safe and secure, that will more equitably distribute economic prosperity, that will inspire free enterprise, personal liberty and a stronger sense of shared community.

Mr. Trump, we call on you to show the way, to lead the country toward these broadly shared goals in ways consistent with the constitutional ideals that have served the United States for more than two centuries. That will take selflessness and leadership by example to build unity and equal opportunity.

We are going to be hopeful. We are going to be aspirational for you and for our country. This election gives you the opportunity to prove yourself a statesman.

VIEWS Cynthia Tucker That’s after taking into account the smoldering heap of Democratic aspirations left behind at the federal level.

Republicans now control the White House, both branches of Congress and, shortly, the U.S. Supreme Court. Not only is there a vacancy left by the death of Antonin Scalia, but there are two justices older than age of 80 (liberal Ruth Bader Ginsberg and moderate Anthony Kennedy) and one who is 78 (liberal Stephen Breyer).

That means that Trump could conceivably pick four justices with no resistance from a GOP-controlled Senate. If he chooses conservative justices who are, say, in their 50s, the nation’s governing document will be interpreted by a right-wing faction for more than a generation.

That means that President Obama, whom Democrats once believed would be transformational, will have no legacy beyond serving two terms as the nation’s first black president. Every

major policy or program he put in place is about to be overturned. His executive orders on issues such as deportation will be easiest to reverse, of course.

But a President Trump also will find few obstacles on his way to repealing the Affordable Care Act. Or rolling back Obama’s agreement with Iran limiting its nuclear program. Or reversing the president’s seemingly historic treaty to curb climate change.

The Donald has pledged to rescind all these, and there is no reason to doubt him. Republican leaders already had those legacy-making accomplishments in their gun-sights.

Looking back, the signs of a Democratic Party skating toward disaster have been apparent for some time. Since Obama’s first term, news accounts have recorded the decline of state Democratic organizations around the country, a dangerous frailty that became more apparent after the 2010 midterm elections.

The backlash against President Obama already was in full roar, and furious tea partiers and their GOP establishment allies turned out at the ballot box in droves. The highly vaunted Obama coalition, by contrast, appar-

ently didn’t understand the importance of those elections, and Republicans took over statehouses, Congress and the U.S. Senate. But because the White House still was in Democratic hands, it was easier to overlook the vulnerabilities lurking just beneath the level of the Oval Office.

Now, there is nothing to stop a rollback of the personal liberties and human rights that Americans had begun to take for granted. Vice President-elect Pence, a Christian fundamentalist, will surely want abortion rights abolished and the full array of gay and lesbian rights curbed. Gay marriage? There is every reason to expect right-wingers will try to get a new Supreme Court to overturn its historic marriage ruling.

Perhaps, though, those rollbacks in personal and civil liberties would seed a rebirth of the progressive movement and the political party that has, for decades now, been associated with it: the Democratic Party. It’s a shame that the nation will first have to suffer through some oppressive times to get there.

Don’t expect Supreme Court to change much The Donald Trump presidency, coupled with the new Congress, is likely to produce major changes in federal law. But for the Supreme Court, expect a surprising amount of continuity – far more than conservatives hope and progressives fear.

If, as expected, Trump is able to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, the court will look a lot like it did until Scalia died in February: four relative liberals (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor); two moderate conservatives (John Roberts and Anthony Kennedy); and three relative conservatives (Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and the new justice).

That means it would reflect the same ideological makeup as the court that upheld Obamacare and required states to recognize same-sex marriages. It would contain the same five justices – a majority – who recently voted to uphold affirmative action programs and to invalidate restrictions on the abortion right.

A court like that won’t license a Republican-led executive branch to do whatever it wants. It will assert the rule of law. It will rarely veer off in

To be sure, things will be different if Trump is able to replace one of the liberal justices. Neither Ginsburg (who is 83) nor Breyer (78) is a spring chicken. But they both appear to be in good health; don’t be surprised if they continue to serve for the next four years.

Suppose, though, that one of them does resign. At that point, significant changes would be possible. But probably not many.

One reason involves the idea of respect for precedent. The justices are usually reluctant to disturb the court’s previous rulings, even if they disagree strongly with them. In this light, would a new majority really want to announce in, say, 2018, that states can ban same-sex marriage, after years of saying otherwise? That’s unlikely: Such an abrupt reversal of course, defeating widespread expectations, would make the law seem both

unstable and awkwardly political.

Would a Trump court want to overrule Roe v. Wade, which has been the law since 1973, and thus allow states to ban abortion? Considering the intensity of conservative opposition to abortion, that is somewhat more probable. But judges are not politicians, and again to avoid the appearance of destabilizing constitutional law, any majority would hesitate before doing something so dramatic.

Would a court composed of Alito, Roberts, Kennedy, Thomas and one or two Trump appointees be willing to grant broad new powers to the president? No chance. The current conservatives have expressed a great deal of skepticism about executive authority. They aren’t going to turn on a dime merely because the president is a Republican.

There is a more general point.

Many judges (and Roberts in particular) are drawn to “judicial minimalism”; they prefer to focus on the facts of particular cases. Quite apart from respecting prior rulings, they like small steps and abhor bold movements or big theories.

An instructive example: In the

1970s, many progressives were terrified when President Richard Nixon found himself in a position to transform a left-of-center court and to appoint no fewer than four “strict constructionists.” And to be sure, the Nixon court, as it was sometimes called, repeatedly disappointed the left. But the whole period is aptly described as “the counter-revolution that wasn’t.” The Nixon court maintained a lot of continuity with its predecessor. Believing that the commitment to the rule of law entails humility and respect for the past, it preserved most of its precedents, even as it refused to build on them.

It’s true that with further changes in the court’s membership, we should expect to see some incremental movements in the law, including expansions in gun rights, increased protection of commercial advertising and new constraints on the power of regulatory agencies. But there’s an excellent chance that in four years, constitutional law will look pretty much the same as it does now.

Most political analysts and pundits – myself included – spent the election season predicting the death of the Republican Party, which was embroiled in civil war. We were right: The GOP, at least the GOP of Ronald Reagan and the George Bushes, is dead.

The party in power calls itself Republican, but it is really the party of Donald Trump. We are about to find out what that means.

Still – along with dismissing the plausibility of a President Trump – the commentariat missed an equally important development that is now startlingly obvious: The Democratic Party is bleeding out and near death, too. It may not be terminal, but it is certainly comatose. It may recover, but even if it does, its health will be fragile for years – if not decades – to come.

As a few recounts around the country continue, it’s clear that Republican governors and state legislative candidates have romped to victory in most races. The GOP (or the party of Trump) now controls the vast majority of governorships and legislatures. Brooklyn College history professor Robert David Johnson told The Washington Post that a political party has not been so dominant since the World War II era.

The Waterman Lions Club will host its 10th annual Gobbler Gallop 5K walk/run on Saturday.

Neidel, DeKalb top Cary-Grove for trip to semifinals

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With Cary-Grove rattling off long, time-consuming drives – even if they didn’t result in points – the DeKalb football team was looking to take advantage of getting the ball to start the second half in a quarterfinal of the IHSA Class 6A playoffs.

The Barbs succeeded.

The No. 7 Barbs ran the clock all the way down and got a score late in the second quarter to break a tie, then rolled off a long scoring drive to start the third quarter to push the lead to two scores for the first time en route to a 35-21 win over the No. 3 Trojans and their first trip to the semifinals since

1980.

Last year, the Barbs lost at home to Montini in the quarters, making the win even sweeter, senior corner back Jake Neidel said.

“It feels great, especially after last year,” said Neidel, who had two interceptions against the Trojans. “Yeah, we ran into a tough team last year, but it makes it feel so much better. Especially knowing it’s my senior year and it’s just great with a great group of guys.”

The Barbs will face No. 1 Prairie Ridge in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday in Crystal Lake.

With the quarterfinal tied at 14-14, Cary-Grove (10-2) turned the ball over on downs in what would be its only

drive of four plays or less the entire game. The Barbs (10-2) took over on their own 47, then slowed down when they reached the 24, running the ball and not calling timeouts. They spiked the ball after picking up a first down at the 25. On the next play, Derek Kyler lobbed the ball into the end zone, and Cole Tucker leaped for the second of his two scoring grabs of the game.

“He got back there, and I think they had two guys there, too,” Cary-Grove coach Brad Seaburg said. “They had two of their guys and we had one of our guys. He just went up and made the play.”

The Barbs deferred to start the game, and got the ball to start the second half. They took advantage of that,

going nine plays in 5:10 to score, capped by a 3-yard run by Delvin Williams, pushing the DeKalb lead to 28-14.

DeKalb coach Matt Weckler said the Barbs were trying to run the clock down at the end of the second half to avoid a punt, setting themselves up to go for a last-ditch pass into the end zone if they needed to, or possibly attempt a field goal into the wind.

“Going in, we kind of wasted some time, knowing that we didn’t want to give them the ball back,” Weckler said.

“We thought maybe we could get a field goal, or punch one in, knowing we get the ball back in the second half. So coming out the second half and putting

The Spartans are headed to the semifinals.

The Sycamore defense made its second goal line stand of the game in overtime, and the No. 13 seed Spartans knocked off undefeated top-seed Sterling, 29-22, in a wild finish in a Class 5A quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Engh Field.

“We knew it was all or nothing because we knew both teams were tired and we needed that stand,” said Lesiewski, who had two interceptions on the day. “I don’t remember much [after the stop]. I just broke down. It was one of the most emotional moments of my life. I can’t believe how

much we’ve come together as a team.”

The Spartans (8-4) reach their first semifinal since 2013 and fourth one in school history. They will host No. 7 Vernon Hills (9-3) after Sycamore needed a win over Rochelle in the regular-season finale just to make the playoffs.

“I don’t know where to start. I don’t know where to start,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “What a great atmosphere. Our kids never quit. There’s a lot of times in that game that our guys could have quit, and we just kept fighting. We talked about playing 48 minutes, and we played more than that, but we took ’er down to the 48 minutes.”

The wild finish was emblematic of the backs-against-the-wall postseason for Sycamore – which was the underdog seed in all three wins. After Sterling missed a 25-yard field goal that would have all but sealed the win with two minutes remaining and the Warriors leading, 22-14 – the ball bouncing

off the right post – the Spartans went 80 yards in nine plays in little over a minute for a touchdown.

Sycamore faced a fourth-and-9 on its own 21-yard line, its season hanging in the balance, and senior quarterback Ty Sulaver led the drive that featured a 28-yard pass to junior Luke Ryan, a 13yard pass to senior Jordan Tolzin and 22-yard and 14-yard passes to senior tight end Donovan Smith.

Junior running back Peyton Wiegmann, who finished with 161 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries, scored on a 4-yard run after breaking a tackle to make it 22-20 with 41 seconds remaining.

Needing the 2-point conversion, the Spartans were called for a delay of game, and Sulaver’s pass was incomplete, but Sterling (11-1) was called for defensive pass interference.

With the ball on the 4-yard line, Sulaver scrambled on a designed pass and

dove into the end zone – absorbing a brutal hit by the Sterling defense to send the game to overtime.

“I don’t know what I was thinking – it was worth it, it was worth it, but that hurt,” said Sulaver, who finished 12 for 21 with 125 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 53 yards. He had 75 of those passing yards on the final drive of regulation.

Wiegmann scored his third touchdown of the game in overtime on a third-and-goal from the 4-yard line to put Sycamore ahead, 29-22, and Sterling quarterback Trey Morse was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1 to send the Spartans players and fans into bedlam.

“My gut is killing me. These games are only fun afterwards,” Joe Ryan said. “I’m just so happy for the kids.

I’m so proud of them.”

The injury, which will end Maddie’s career with the Huskies, occurred during the 45-20 win over Bowling Green on Nov. 1.

“Our hearts are broken for Anthony to see his career end this way,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said. “He came in and did a great job of leading this team in MAC play, and we feel terrible for him and his family. He was playing some of the best football of his career. It’s hard when a senior loses games in his final season.”

DeKalb answered back on its drive in the fourth, thanks to Kyler finding Tucker for a 63-yard gain on third-and-11, setting up a 14-yard pass from Kyler to Devin Williams to bring the lead to 35-21.

Cary-Grove started one of its long drives behind sweeps by Kyle Pressley, where its early success came from running up the middle with Collins and Tyler Pennington. The Trojans got the ball down to the 23, and were facing a third-and-8 on the 28 when they ran another sweep with Pressley. Linebacker Ben Roeflsema read the play and leveled Pressley for a 5-yard loss, and Collins threw an incompletion on fourth down to give the ball back to the Barbs.

Weckler said the Barbs changed their defense a little so Roeflsema could read the plays instead of being in the middle trying to stop Collins and Pennington, who ran a combined 49 times for 277 yards.

“Their wing basically told me the play,” Roeflsema said. “He told me which way he was blocking, and I just jumped it and read my keys.”

DeKalb went three and out, and CaryGrove started driving again. With about 3:30 left, Collins was picked off by Neidel for the second time.

“It was a long distance, and three-something minutes left, so it just runs through my head that I got to stay pass,” Neidel said. “I don’t need to stop the rush when we’re up two scores. I could just sit back on the pass, read his eyes.”

Weckler said he was impressed with the game Neidel had – which included a sec-

The starting job now belongs to sophomore Ryan Graham, who went 24 for 43 with 227 yards and three touchdowns and had 97 rushing yards in the Huskies’ 31-24 loss to Toledo last week at Guaranteed Rate Field.

It’s the second consecutive year the Huskies have had injury woes at quarterback.

Senior Drew Hare had season-ending injuries in both seasons – an Achilles injury in 2015 and a leg injury this year.

The Huskies (3-7 overall, 3-3 in MAC West) already had their chance at a bowl game come to an end with the loss to the Rockets and finish the season at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday and at Kent State on Nov. 25. ond-quarter interception he ran back 27 yards to set up a DeKalb touchdown, giving the Barbs their first lead of the game at 14-7 with 9:26 left in the first half.

The Trojans scored on the first drive of the game, then held the Barbs to a three-and-out.

They mounted a long drive on their next possession but were stopped on fourth-and-6 from the DeKalb 30. The Barbs were facing a thirdand-2 on their own 35 when Jelantae Young got the first gain of more than 4 yards for the Barbs, going 65 yards through the middle for the score to tie the game with 1:07 left in the first quarter.

Neidel got his pick on the next C-G drive, then Kyler hit Tucker from 20 yards out, with Tucker outleaping a defender for the score.

Cary-Grove tied it at 14 on its next drive.

It was just the second time this year CaryGrove was held under 33 points – the other being in a 26-14 loss to Prairie Ridge to start the year. The Wolves await the Barbs in the next round with a perfect 12-0 record after a 71-7 win over Lake Forest. While their biggest win of the year, it was the fourth time scoring more than 60 points and sixth over 50 this year. They’ve won their first three playoff games by a combined 163-31.

For DeKalb, it continues a progression under Weckler, in his fourth year, of the team not only getting to the playoffs each year of his tenure, but making a longer run every season.

“It’s huge for us and our community and our program and our fans,” Weckler said.

“This is a spot we haven’t been to before, and each year we’ve been here as a coaching staff we said we’ve wanted to get better and better each year, and we’ve been fortunate enough to have great kids to be able to buy in and be able to do that.”

The Spartans answered that by going 97 yards on the ensuing drive that was capped by a 5-yard touchdown by Wiegmann.

Despite the win over the previously undefeated Warriors, who beat Sycamore, 38-6, in Week 1, the Spartans didn’t play a perfect game.

Leading 7-6 late in the first half, Sulaver was intercepted by sophomore defensive back Alex Duran, and the Warriors turned that into a 1-yard touchdown run by Morse with 1:14 left in the second quarter. On the Spartans’ next drive, they had a 2-yard punt that gave the Warriors the ball on the Sycamore 23 with eight seconds left and Warriors kicker Antonio Diaz connected on a 40-yard field goal to put them up, 16-7, at halftime.

“We’re not going to judge it on perfect, we’re going to judge it on the scoreboard,” Joe Ryan said. “It means we’re getting better, but if we want to keep winning, we have to tie up those loose ends, and we will.”

In a game that featured three strong drives by the Sycamore offense, they opened the second half by going 16 plays, and Sulaver found Smith in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown. The Spartans converted on three third downs – including the touchdown pass – and a fourth down to extend the drive and cut the lead to 16-14 and took more than eight minutes off the clock.

However, Sterling answered on the next play, and junior running back Nyrell Sullivan scored on a 69-yard run down the right sideline to put the Warriors ahead, 22-14.

It was the only offensive play of the quarter for Sterling.

Sycamore had a chance to cut the lead early in the fourth quarter while facing a fourth-and-goal from the 1, but the Spartans were called for a false start, and a pass by Luke Ryan on a trick play was incomplete.

However, the Spartans’ last-minute drive and a stellar defensive performance kept their dramatic run in the playoffs alive.

The 22 points are a season-low for the Warriors’ offense – they scored 35 against Rochelle in the regular season and were averaging 43 a game in their two playoff wins.

“It makes it sweeter that we’re going to the semis; it doesn’t matter who you beat,” Joe Ryan said. “I think it’s vindication for our kids because we knew we weren’t as bad as we were Week 1.

I think they wanted to prove that and they did that today.”

The failed pass rush on the third play of the second half that led to Winston’s 39-yard completion to Mike Evans setting up the 43-yard touchdown pass to someone named Freddie Martino two plays later which effectively sealed the Bucs victory was a sequence straight out of the Keystone Cops.

It is also time to acknowledge that Adrian Amos is unlikely to ever be more than just good enough to sometimes get the job done and in spite of his “fortunate” interception Sunday, Harold Jones-Quartey is unlikely to be even that.

Greg Olson is quite accomplished as well, but was fired two weeks ago in Jacksonville.

Norv Turner once won a Super Bowl ring in the job but is now out in Minnesota.

What exactly are Loggains’ qualifications for the job?

The Bears first half play-calling in Tampa Sunday was a joke, clearly the best laugh the Bucs have had in some time. Loggains may someday prove to be a fine football coach, but his play-calling Sunday set his team up for failure and was more responsible for Sunday’s embarrassment than anything any player did including Cutler.

The Bucs clearly had no answers for or ability to stop Howard, so Loggains did it for them.

What Fox does now about the play-calling and his players’ preparedness to play over the next seven weeks should ultimately dictate his future and that of his staff as well.

For now they should just be really embarrassed. Bears players and fans deserve better and it’s Fox’s job to make sure that happens.

Kane helps Blackhawks hand Canadiens 2nd regulation loss

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane scored a spectacular tiebreaking goal in the second period and the Blackhawks beat Montreal, 3-2, on Sunday night, handing the league-leading Canadiens just their second regulation loss of the season.

Marian Hossa added his team-leading ninth goal and rookie Gustav Forsling scored his first in the NHL as the Hawks improved to 9-0-2 in their last 11 games and ended Montreal’s four-game winning streak.

Shea Weber and Andrei Markov scored for the Canadiens in a matchup of conference leaders.

Both goalies faced teams from their hometowns. Canadiens backup Al Montoya, a Chicago native, made 32 saves.

The Hawks’ Corey Crawford, from Montreal, stopped 21 shots.

Kane put the Hawks ahead 3-2 with 3:37 left in the second period to cap a terrific individual effort. Kane skated down the slot, fooled Jeff Petry with a move and chipped a shot past Montoya – while falling to the ice with Max Pacio-

The 37-year-old Hossa has goals in four straight games and eight of nine.

His 508th career goal on Sunday moved him past Canadiens icon Jean Beliveau into 40th place on the NHL’s all-time list.

The Hawks have not lost in regula-

tion since Oct. 21 at Columbus.

Artem Anisimov, who entered tied with Kane for the Hawks points lead with 17, returned after missing one game with an upper-body injury.

Stanley Cup teams, played his first game at the United Center after a salary cap-forced trade to the Canadiens last summer. Shaw got a standing ovation from the crowd of 21,762 during a video tribute in the first period.

Forsling opened the scoring with 7:54 remaining in the first on a screened shot from the left point. With several players in front, the drive sailed past Montoya’s glove.

The Canadiens went ahead with goals 1:41 apart and on consecutive shots early in the second.

Weber tied it 1-1 just 59 seconds into the period with a fluke power-play goal. His shot from a sharp angle – almost in the right corner – deflected off Chicago defenseman Michal Kempny’s stick and over Crawford’s shoulder.

Markov put Montreal ahead at 2:40 on a high shot from the slot with Chicago’s Brian Campbell and Montreal’s Paul Byron screening in front.

Hossa tied it 2-all with 8:31 left in the second. After Montoya made a left pad save on Nick Schmaltz’s shot from the blue line, Hossa popped in the rebound from the right edge of the crease.

Following their 36-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, the Chicago Bears should be ashamed of themselves.

All of them!

You always have to start with the players because they were the ones on the field who failed to perform.

Whether Jay Cutler is released following this season or is kept around for one more year as a bridge to whomever is brought in to replace him is irrelevant.

He can no longer be viewed as part of the rebuilding program.

The Bears could be very good at guard and at center if they can ever keep Kyle Long, Josh Sitton and Cody Whitehair on the field together.

But do we need any more evidence after Tampa that this team just isn’t good enough at tackle?

It is clear to almost everybody who isn’t a member of the Bears’ coaching staff that they have something very special in Jordan Howard and they have no idea what to do with him.

Fortunately there is a great deal

Beyond Howard only Tracy Porter was worthy of our praise Sunday. The Bucs didn’t choose to take Mike Evans out of the game; Porter did that.

All of that said, shame and blame are two very different things and I don’t believe the Bears players were to blame for what happened in Tampa Sunday, that all belongs to the Bears’ coaching staff.

Coaches don’t get hired for one or two great game plans, so they shouldn’t be fired for them either.

John Fox comes with a track record that is much better than what we saw Sunday and has earned the chance to prove he can do better.

But Sunday’s mess has to be a referendum on what Fox has wrought in Chicago to date, and without significant improvement over the next seven weeks, his firing has to be on the table.

We asked repeatedly in the week leading up to the Bucs game how a 2-6 team could be so confident and that has to be on the head coach, as does his team’s failure to show up.

But most disturbing about Fox’s efforts to date in Chicago is his decision to make Dowell Loggains his offensive coordinator.

Greg Roman is one of the best offensive coordinators in the league, but was fired after week two in Buffalo.

DeKalb-Sycamore girls swimming takes 4th in St. Charles Sectional The DeKalb-Sycamore co-op girls swim team took fourth Saturday at the IHSA St. Charles Sectional, with sophomore Aleida Wilkins qualifying for state.

Wilkins was the lone qualifier for the Barbs, finishing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.04.

Reassure your daughter beforehand and as she goes through puberty Note to readres: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: What should I expect when my daughter goes through puberty? How can I help her as she goes through these changes?

Dear Reader: Full disclosure: I don’t have any personal or parental experience to tap into for this question. Experienced colleagues and friends always emphasize how important it is to discuss puberty with your daughter before these changes begin. She needs to know what to expect and also that these changes are perfectly normal. Otherwise, she might be frightened by the first signs of change, such as her first menstrual bleeding. Puberty typically lasts for four or five years. In girls, it usually starts between the ages of 8 and 13. Remind your daughter it is normal to begin puberty anywhere within this range. (But do mention it to your child’s doctor if your daughter is showing signs of puberty before age 8, or if there are no signs of puberty by age 13.)

During puberty, the whole body changes shape and size. For most girls, the first sign of puberty is breast growth. This will start with a small round lump (breast bud) under one or both nipples. The lump gradually will grow, along with the dark area around the nipples (areola). A family friend once told me her daughter had become terrified she might have breast cancer when her breasts started to grow. This happened not long after the girl overheard her mother telling a friend “breast cancer runs in my family.”

Girls gain weight and muscle and grow taller during puberty. This growth peaks about one year after puberty has begun. The storage of body fat also changes, so the hips, buttocks and legs get larger while the waist

Hair grows in the pubic area, on the legs and under the arms. Glands in the skin make more oil and sweat. Body odor and acne may become noticeable.

Most girls begin to have periods (menstruate) about two years after the start of breast development. On average, in the United States, girls get their first period around age 12½. However, menstruation may start as early as 9 years or as late as 17 years old. A girl’s first few menstrual periods tend to be irregular, until the ovaries mature and start to produce eggs regularly.

In addition to these physical changes, puberty brings emotional changes. For example, many preteens feel anxious or self-conscious about the physical changes of puberty, especially when comparing themselves with others. Your child’s moods also will change quickly and often during this time. Mood swings are normal and probably are related to changing hormone levels.

Do your best to support, encourage and guide your daughter though this new and different, but also exciting and important, time. Even if you’ve done a good job of explaining what to expect, the changes of puberty may frighten your daughter. Your ongoing explanation and reassurance are as important as your preparation of your daughter for the coming of puberty.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY fiancé, “Allen,” and I have dated Jeanne for almost three Phillips years and have been living together for three months. When we met, he had been divorced for more than two years. Allen has a 13-year-old son and a 19-year-old daughter.

His kids learned about me after we had dated a year. His daughter, “Jen,” attends college out of state. When she visits home, she stays only with her mom.

Last summer, Allen and I decided to buy a house together, found the perfect one and went to make an offer when Jen stepped in and said if we lived together before August, after she returned to school, she wouldn’t have anything to do with him. He told me I can’t live with him until August. I was devastated, but I didn’t have a choice. Now we have a house together, Jen said she wants to spend time on Thanksgiving here at the house without me or my kids. She cried to her dad, saying if he doesn’t do this he’s excluding her and choosing my kids and me over her.

This will be my first holiday with my fiancé, and I was really looking forward to it. We were having friends and family over. But now, because of her request, he wants me to leave for a few hours in the morning. I’m torn. I feel like her behavior is extremely rude and he shouldn’t give in to her, but she said she’ll only see him under these conditions. Do I leave my house for a few hours on Thanksgiving, or tell her she’s welcome but the kids and I are staying in our own home? – Disrespected Out West Dear Disrespected: It’s time for you and Allen to have a serious discussion. Jen’s demand is unreasonable. Have you set a wedding date yet?

Does he plan to allow his daughter to control both of you once you are married? You and your children should not have to vacate your home for her to visit with her father. I don’t know how I should behave around her now because large parts of our history have correlated to various identities. Some have come onto me, but others seemed to hate me. Do you know where I can find help for dealing with a person afflicted by this? She doesn’t want to tell her psychiatrist, and so far, only I and another friend know. – Worried How To Behave Dear Worried: If your friend’s psychiatrist doesn’t know that she has dissociative identity disorder, I would hesitate to accept her self-diagnosis and so should you. The kindest thing you can do for her would be to urge her to fully disclose any symptoms she’s been experiencing to her doctor, because if what you have written is accurate, she has not been doing that.
