From the moment Hannah Jo was born, I thought I already had failed her. She was born 10 minutes after Valentine’s Day. My heart sank. She could have been our love child. Instead, I couldn’t mentally or physically push her out in time.

My labor was hard. I had terrible back labor. I went back and forth about having an epidural. Finally, I gave in after eight hours of hard labor. I am sure if I didn’t get the epidural I would have had our daughter on Valentine’s Day. But I was in so much pain. I was exhausted. I needed some relief.

Hannah wasn’t due until Feb. 20. I went into labor early because I fell on my belly while I was mopping the floor. I was doing this chore right before a routine doctor’s appointment.

After I fell on the slippery floor, I knew something had jumpstarted. I called the doctor and they said come in early and they would monitor me.

Sure enough, I was having contractions but my water hadn’t broken, so they sent me home. They said when my contractions are about five minutes apart or my water breaks go to the hospital.

Through the course of the night on Feb. 13, I went to the hospital twice. Once it was a false alarm. The second time I knew my water broke and it was time to boogie to the maternity ward.

I was in labor for more than 24 hours.

Eight of which I had no pain medicine.

Finally, they were about to give me a cesarean section, but I said I would give it one more college try and push our baby out.

11 p.m. and said to myself, “I will have this baby on Valentine’s Day” and so I began to push like no one’s business.

When she finally came out they whisked her away to check vitals and see if she was healthy. I was a hormonal wreck. The only thing that got me through the crying was my husband’s understanding eyes and smile.

When I finally realized she was healthy and perfect, I was so excited to have my daughter.

Then after I realized she wasn’t born on Valentine’s Day and my heart sank. Then the guilt set in that I already failed my child. How could I have done that to her? I know it seems meaningless to some but it has struck a chord with me to this day.

I know there will be other times I feel that I am not a good enough mother, but I felt that if I wrote about my inner struggle it would begin the healing process and acceptance that I had a hard labor and that I didn’t fail my child.

One quote that sticks with me is by Stephanie Precourt, “There will be so many times you feel like you’ve failed, but in the eyes, heart and mind of your child you are super mom.”

TODAY’S TALKER Facebook glitch made it appear some users had died

SAN FRANCISCO – Some Facebook users received an unsettling shock Friday, when an unexplained glitch caused the social networking service to post a notice that implied they were dead.

A number of Facebook users reported that their profile page on the social network was topped with a message that referred to them by name –

as if they were gone – while linking to a feature that “memorializes” the page of someone who has died. The message said Facebook hoped the users’ loved ones would find comfort in seeing posts that others shared about them.

Even Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s page had the death notice for a short time Friday. But messages had disappeared by midday California time.

Sycamore High School pays tribute to veterans

SYCAMORE – Larry Forsberg, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, was at Sycamore High School on Friday not only to educate students on the significance of Veterans Day, but also to pay his respects to the names and faces on the Freedom Isn’t Free wall.

Two of Forsberg’s high school friends, U.S. Army veterans Eatterson Byrd Jr. and Rodney Drake, were pictured on the wall along with others who died in battle after attending Sycamore High School.

Byrd, a 1965 graduate, died in 1970 at age 22, and Drake, a 1964 graduate, died in 1967 at age 21.

“I come for them, and I come for all the boys that we lost and all that served the country from the time of its inception until today,” Forsberg said.

Principal Tim Carlson said between 75 and 100 veterans helped with the school’s Veterans Day tribute Friday, which included a gathering around the flagpole before classes where the school’s choir sang the national anthem and veterans spoke about their service.

Drummers from the school’s marching band then led a march through the hallways, and a SpartanTV video was shown featuring interviews with veterans who attended the school.

Carlson said having students interact with veterans helps them to understand more than they would by only reading about the various wars in U.S. history.

“It’s more than just words on paper,” Carlson said. “They can actually talk to people who were in all these places, people who were in World War II, people who were in the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War.” Forsberg said although young people may have a lot on their minds, he believes they still take something away from the experience.

“I think they get it, and if they don’t get it, at some point in time I think they will,” he said. “Something will happen. There will be a young man or a young lady from Sycamore who doesn’t come home

Elizabeth Fritz, a senior at Sycamore High School, said she and other members of the history club spent the past year and a half researching one of the veterans from the Freedom Isn’t Free wall. They also set up the tables for students’ Veterans Day displays in the cafeteria.

“We were hoping to show everybody the rights that we have, regardless of if they think they’re being threatened at the current moment,” Fritz said. “It took so many brave people to give us these rights.”

Carlson said he was pleased with the number of veterans who turned out for the tribute.

“It’s an important day, and sometimes students don’t understand the context of what it is because they’re so young and they’ve never went through what our veterans had to go through,” he said. “I think it’s important to bring [veterans] into the school and help [students] understand.”

County Board to consider property tax referendum for health services

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The DeKalb County Board is set to vote Wednesday on a proposed property tax referendum to fund public health services.

If approved by the County Board, voters would get to decide if they wanted a property tax increase on the April 4 ballot.

The board will consider the referendum at its meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday at the Gathertorium at the Legislative Center, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore.

The proposed referendum would bring in about $500,000 a year through a property tax of $9.57 per $100,000 of equalized assessed value, County Administrator Gary Hanson said.

That means the owner of a $150,000 home would pay about $15 Lisa Gonzalez more each year to the county to fund public health services.

The DeKalb County Health Department has been using reserve funds for the past three years to cover operating costs to maintain existing

services, Public Health Administrator Lisa Gonzalez said. That practice could only continue for a few more years before the reserves are depleted and the department would either need to find more revenue or cut services.

“We’re trying to be proactive,” Gonzalez said.

The money is needed to keep the health department from having to cut core services such as its childhood immunization program and communicable disease control and prevention.

The department does everything

from wellness screenings and flu shots to animal control and restaurant inspections. It also maintains vital records, including issuance of birth and death certificates, among other functions.

If voters reject the referendum, the department would have to look at service cuts, Gonzalez said.

In June, the board considered putting a referendum on this month’s ballot that would have extended an existing property tax. That plan would have raised about $650,000 a year for the health department, but it was scrapped by the County Board.

Propane storage facility plans up for another vote

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The DeKalb County Board on Wednesday is expected to consider – for a second time – a Morris company’s plan to build a propane distribution facility.

The plan has been opposed by neighbors, who have said they intend to file a lawsuit to prevent the project from going forward if it is approved by the County Board.

The board will consider the proposal at its meeting at 7:30 p.m.

In September, the board voted to send the plan back for another public hearing. That restarted the process, but the result was the same: The public hearing officer again recommended the permit be denied, and the Planning and Zoning Committee again

They have repeatedly cited a recent seven-alarm fire at a propane facility in Gurnee as evidence of their safety concerns.

Dibble Family LLC is seeking a special-use permit from DeKalb County to allow a propane distribution facility at 25330 Five Points Road, on agricultural land near the intersection with Route 64 in unincorporated Mayfield Township. The property is about a mile from Sycamore and 2 miles from DeKalb, according to

county documents.

The company wants to renovate the existing building on the 2.77-acre site and build two 30,000-gallon propane storage tanks on the northeast corner of the property. A fence would be built to enclose the tanks and office areas. The facility would be used to serve the company’s existing DeKalb County customers. About 90 percent of the company’s customers are farmers and agricultural businesses, according to the proposal.

Sycamore Citizens Race Against Propane Storage established a legal fund and retained a lawyer as the plan moved through the planning process earlier this year. The group has said it is prepared to take the issue to court.

Jones said it might end up in court either way.

“Property rights are a two-way street,” Jones said. “[The company] has proven it’s not a detriment. I don’t have grounds to say ‘no.’ ”

JOE APODACA

Born: August 19, 1928; in El Paso, TX Died: November 10, 2016; in Earlville, IL Joe “Cadillac Joe” Apodaca, 88, of Earlville passed away Thursday, November 10, 2016 at his home.

He was born August 19, 1928 in El Paso, TX, the son of Hipolito and Lasara (Davilla) Apodaca. He married Cynthia R. “Cindy” Casey on May 6, 1961 in North Aurora. Joe proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. At the end of the war, he traveled to the South Pole’s on Admiral Byrd’s Expedition. Joe was life member of the Amvets and the VFW. Joe was completely fascinated with the penguins.

He is survived by his six children, Delores (Charles) George of Waterman, IL, Joe (Cheri) Apodaca of Hinckley, IL, Vickie (Dave Janda) Apodaca of Arvada, CO, Jane (Peter) Pabon of St. Charles, IL, Scott Apodaca of Wilmington, NC and Tammy (Brian) Russell of Sandwich, IL; fifteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Comstock of Sycamore, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Cindy; one infant son, Joe Robert; and one brother, Robert Apodaca.

Funeral Services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Somonauk with Pastor Del Keilman officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the funeral home in Somonauk. Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 14, 2016 at Johnson Grove Cemetery in Waterman, IL. Following graveside service there will be a luncheon at Amvets 1194 Jericho Rd. JAMES WAYNE DYE

Born: December 22, 1934 Died: October 30, 2016

James Wayne Dye, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Northern Illinois University, died peacefully at his home, 405 Fairmont Drive, DeKalb, IL 60115, on Sunday, October 30, 2016, with his wife and daughters by his side. He had been diagnosed with metastasized carcinoid cancer a year ago.

Born December 22, 1934 in Appalachia, Virginia, the son of Ernest and Zella Dye, he is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy Coleman; his daughter from his first marriage, Melissa Dye (m. Scott Oscher); grandson Gabriel Oscher; his daughter with Dorothy, Alexandra Dye; and his niece Melinda Halcomb.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Doris.

After receiving his Ph.D. at Tulane University, Prof. Dye taught at Washington University from 1960-66 before joining the faculty at NIU, where he remained until his retirement in 2003,

serving as Philosophy Department Chair his final three years. In addition to authoring Religions of the World (1967, repr. 1976), he published over 30 academic articles and presented over 50 papers at academic conferences.

Jim was an avid runner, gifted photographer, gourmet cook, wine connoisseur, classical music and opera lover, technophile, builder of 18th-century replica furniture, including a gloriously hand-painted harpsichord, and a tenacious do-it-yourselfer. He traveled widely and was proficient in several languages.

He was buried in a private ceremony on November 1 at Fairview Cemetery, DeKalb. A celebration of his life is being planned for the spring.

Born July 22, 1943, in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth (Scott) Nelson, Sharon married David N. Waters on June 6, 1966 in Rolla, Missouri.

Sharon was a teacher and business executive, and a deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church in DeKalb.

She is survived by her husband, David; daughters, Elizabeth Conway, Stephanie Tamblyn and Angela Waters; sister, Roberta Nelson; and brother, Gary Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Mike Nelson.

The memorial service will be held in Ireland.

DR. DAVID L. WILLIAMS Dr. David L. Williams, 87, died at home in DeKalb of Alzheimer’s on October 28, 2016.

He was born in Waco, Texas to Leonard and Ruby Tindell Williams and grew up in Waco and suburban Bellmead. He felt the call to Christian ministry as a boy and never wavered in his response to that call. At a youth camp he met Glenda Peyton - she a 15 year old camper and he an 18 year old junior counselor. Three years later they were married at First Baptist of Bellmead, Texas and embarked on a path that remained a loving adventure for 66 years. David earned an MA degree in Religious Studies at Baylor University, Waco. They then moved to Fort

Worth where he earned a Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

During these years he held student pastorates at Rock Prairie, Beck Prairie and Bald Prairie, Texas and also worked as an artist-illustrator at Convair Aircraft.

After graduation he was called to pastor Vale St. Baptist in Bloomington, Illinois for two years. His next pastorate was Temple Baptist in Canton, Illinois for six years. While there he taught seminary extension courses in the African American community of Peoria.

He next served Springfield Southern Baptist for six years. Under his leadership, the church established two new churches at Macomb and Chatham. He became aware of the need for further training in counseling and did an internship at Jacksonville Mental Hospital. After 22 years in the pastoral ministry he felt called to a counseling ministry. So at age 40 he returned to school to prepare for a new field. He earned a Master of Science in Community Mental Health and a Doctor of Education (Psychology and Counseling) degree at NIU. During those years he pastored Sycamore Road Baptist in DeKalb.

In 1972 the family moved to Princeton, Illinois where David assisted in the development of a community mental health center which became Quad County Counseling Center, serving as senior psychologist and clinical director. He left the clinic for a two year period to teach at SIU Medical School, Springfield Branch and then returned to Princeton. After retirement from the clinic he focused on his private practice, Center for Mastery Living. He also taught Psychology at Wheaton University.

Music was a large part of his life. It was said that as a boy soprano he “sang like an angel.”

He often acted as choir master in his pastorates.

He agreed with Methodist Wesley who said “Why should the Devil have all the good tunes?”

So he set Psalm 1 to Scott Joplin’s Pineapple Rag and on occasion startled a congregation into full alertness by singing the extremely rapid rendition. He enjoyed singing with the Celebration Choir and the Festival Choir of DeKalb.

David was an avid tennis player and played into his seventies.

In his final years his memories were not of education and careers but of rearing three children and vacationing with the family - mostly to US and Canadian historic sites. “Boppa” never tired of hearing of exploits of six grandchildren. Even in the last stages of Alzheimer’s he was able to say “Life is wonderful.”

Survivors include his wife Glenda (DeKalb); daughters, Dawn Bonak (Honolulu) and Peyton Williams-Veal (Antioch); son, Kevin Williams (Omaha, Nebraska); grandchildren, Alex Bonak (Honolulu), Erich Williams (Jenny) (Saginaw, Michigan), Zoe Smith (Aurora), Erik Williams (Rockford), Kelsey Williams (DeKalb), Derek Veal (Antioch); brother, Dr. Bill Williams (Shirley) (Waco, Texas).

David was preceded in death by sister Betty Dalrymple and brother Dr. John Williams.

The family wishes to express appreciation for KishHealth Hospice staff who were so caring and competent, the Visiting Angels, the Alzheimer’s Support Group.

The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb with Pastor Erik Ngum officiating. Refreshments and visitation will follow at Victory Baptist, 1930 Sycamore Road, DeKalb.

Interment will be at a later date at the family Henry-Peyton cemetery at Benchley, Texas.

Lonnie Stojan of Sycamore remembers the time he spent serving in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and he also remembers how he was treated when he returned home.

Stojan, an Army combat engineer, said that although he never personally experienced harassment, he heard tales of soldiers returning home – feeling unwelcome and being spat upon and called names in public.

“The war was unfavorable, and soldiers were blamed for things that didn’t happen, for being the bad guys,” Stojan said. “We did what we were sent there to do, what we were supposed to do.

Sycamore considers rezoning property for senior community DAILY CHRONICLE

news@dailychronicle.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Planning Commission is set to vote Monday on rezoning about nine acres of property at the southeast corner of Mount Hunger Road and North Main Street where a local developer plans to build a 48-unit active-adult community.

Brian Grainger, owner of Solid Construction Services and Somerset Farm Sycamore LLC, plans to build 12 fourunit buildings on a 8.59-acre property that is zoned for commercial use.

The commission will meet at 7 p.m.

Monday in the Council Chambers of the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St. Provided they take a vote, the commissioners will send their recommendation to the Sycamore City Council, which will have the final say.

If approved, the development would consist of luxury townhomes for adults

55 and older, similar to Somerset Farms, a condominium community off Bethany Road near Somonauk Road that also is for adults 55 and older.

Grainger has a contract to purchase the property but needs the rezoning approved before he can proceed with building.

Considerations for the commission include whether rezoning the property would be in the short- and long-term interests of the community and how the development fits in with the city’s comprehensive plan, according to the agenda for Monday’s meeting.

The comprehensive plan outlines the city’s goal to maintain mostly homes designed for single families but to consider more diverse housing options as well to attract a variety of residents. It also lists the goal of developing senior housing options within walking distance of downtown and other points of interest.

#ProudlyDeKalb hosts public service workshop DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – #ProudlyDeKalb is sponsoring a workshop for anyone who may be interested in getting involved in public service by taking on an elected or appointed civic leadership position.

Topics include a review of governmental structures and options for serving at the city, county, school district and special district levels.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 10 in the training room at the DeKalb Police Department, 700 W. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb. Registration is free and available online at www.proudlydekalb.com/leadership. #ProudlyDeKalb is a community group that works to promote positive achievements in DeKalb and highlight area attractions.

Matt Duffy, executive director of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, said the purpose of the workshop is to expose people to opportunities for

public service and to educate them about government transparency laws such as the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act. “We’re trying to get more people feeling comfortable and interested in getting involved in public service,” he said. “Whenever there are elections, people have opinions, but they don’t know what’s out there.”

Although a national election often kindles interest in the federal government, it is more feasible for people to make a difference serving on a local level, Duffy said.

He said people who might not feel up to the prospect of running for elected office might consider joining commissions or task forces to start, and with the experience they gain, may be more likely to run in a local election later on.

“For anybody currently in office, it will be a good refresher and reminder, and for those who are unsure, even just having a more educated community will benefit DeKalb County as a whole,” Duffy said.

The DeKalb County Health Department has begun collecting old holiday lights for recycling.

Residents can drop off string lights and extension cords at the DeKalb County Health Department at 2550 N. Annie Glidden Road and other municipal sites through Feb. 15. A full list of drop-off sites is at right.

The health department is partnering with DeKalb Iron and Metal Co. for this sixth annual program. Last year, the program collected 3,000 pounds of string lights. The goal is to keep the lights out of the landfill.

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois University’s Athletics Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for its 2017 induction class, selection committee chairman Rodney Davis said.

“We want to remind the community, faculty and staff, our fans, and NIU alums that this is an open process and that we encourage the public to submit qualified nominees,” Davis, a former Huskies basketball standout from 1984 to ’88 and a 2007 inductee into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame, said in a news release. “Our NIU Hall of Fame is about the best of the best.”

General criteria for induction is “outstanding contributions to intercollegiate athletics.” According to the Hall of Fame bylaws, former NIU student-athletes and teams are eligible for nomination 10 years after the final year of their respective intercollegiate competition while coaches, administrators and staff can be nominated five years after their departure or retirement from the university.

To clarify, student-athletes who completed their eligibility in 2006-07 can be nom-

inated. For coaches, administration and staff, the first eligibility year is 2011-12.

There are two ways to make nominations for the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame: Online: Visit the Athletics Hall of Fame page, go.niu.edu/NIUHallofFame. On the Hall of Fame page, click on the “Hall of Fame Nomination Form,” fill out the necessary information and send it electronically.

Mail: To nominate someone by mail, you can print the nomination form and send a letter of nomination, along with pertinent copies of newspaper or magazine clippings, yearbooks or scrapbooks, and send them to: Hall of Fame, Athletics, Convocation Center 200, NIU, 1525 West Lincoln Highway, DeKalb, IL 60115.

The deadline for nominations is Dec. 31. The NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction is set for homecoming in October 2017.

Founded in 1978, the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame – a biennial induction event since 2011 – has enshrined 199 individuals, 18 teams and one family on its Cardinal and Black roster.

the same respect and dignity when they returned home from war,” Kreitzer said. “There’s a Vietnam veteran motto, ‘Never will one generation of veterans forget another.’ By bringing the wall to DeKalb County, we can honor those veterans and remember the soldiers they lost.”

The wall is a half-scale granite replica of the memorial wall in Washington, D.C. The replica was made by the same company that created the original memorial.

It will cost $7,500 to bring the wall to town, and funds are being raised for summer camp and day care field trip transportation, sound equipment rental, chairs, staging and publicity.

“We are hoping to raise $25,000 total to help with the cost of field trip transportation, re-enactors and the static display of vehicles,” Kreitzer said. “So far, we have raised $6,000.

Stojan was chairman of the group that brought the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall to Sycamore in 1997 and 2007. DeKalb County Veterans Tribute, a group working through VietNow, is raising money to bring back the wall in July 2017.

“So many people never have the chance to see the wall in Washington, D.C.,” Stojan said. “I have two friends, a man I served with and a high school classmate, that died during the war. They are two of the 58,000 names on the wall. The names of 19 people from DeKalb County are on the wall. They may never return home, but their names can, carved in stone.”

Steven Kreitzer, chairman of the project and assistant superintendent of the DeKalb County Veterans Assistance Commission, said that as an Army veteran, he remembers a welcome home parade and people thanking him for his service.

Renee McGuan’s husband was a Vietnam veteran who died from a service-related disability. McGuan and her husband both worked to bring the wall to DeKalb County when it came in 1997 and 2007.

“Many veterans do not talk about their military service or their time in Vietnam,” she said. “The wall is a way to remember the war and honor those that lost their lives. It truly has earned its nickname, ‘The Wall that Heals.’ ” Although Stojan has seen the wall multiple times, he will see it again when it comes to Sycamore.

“Seeing the wall for the first time can be overwhelming,” Stojan said.

“It’s emotional, but I can’t wait for the wall to come again. That wall means an awful lot to me. It’s an experience comparable to my marriage and the birth of my children. It’s one of the highlights of my life.”

Assess home lighting now that days are getting shorter

Even for people who love winter, there’s no denying that the decreasing lack of sunlight can be depressing.

It can also be dangerous. As days grow shorter it’s a good time to think about the role lighting plays in our homes and how it should be re-evaluated as we age.

“We need more and better light because changes to our vision occur as we get older,” said Eunice Noell-Waggoner, president of the Center of Design for an Aging Society. “The pupil in your eye gets smaller and less light reaches the retina. Also, the once-transparent lens becomes cloudy and, as a result, absorbs light that needs to get to the retina.

“At 65 you’re receiving one-third of the light that a 20-year-old does. That’s why young people just don’t understand (when a person mentions insufficient light). They are not seeing the same thing as an older person is.”

Additionally, as a person ages the eyes are slower to adjust to different light levels because eye muscles weaken, which also decreases the eye’s ability to focus, said Cody Baertschi, spokesman, LampsUSA in Watertown, Wisconsin. Older eyes are also more sensitive to glare and they require higher contrasts and higher illumination levels to help distinguish colors, he said.

Light areas to eliminate dark corners and brighten pathways, but avoid typical porch lights, with small bright bulbs that will cause glare, he said. Instead, choose bulbs with diffused lenses, recessed downlighting or a rope light mounted under a lower railing of a staircase.

Porch lights should illuminate the house number, keyhole and faces of visitors, Noell-Waggoner said. Since older eyes have difficulty sensing contrast, light areas where there is a change in elevation such as a step from the garage to the driveway, Noell-Waggoner said.

Waking in the night to use the bathroom can lead to a fall on the way. To provide light that won’t keep you awake when you return to bed, use an amber-colored light, Noell-Waggoner said.

Use a motion-sensor light that’s positioned under the bed so that when you swing your legs down it will illuminate, Noell-Waggoner said.

Then, “light a visual path using amber-colored night lights,” she said.

Rauner wants budget talks next week

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner said Friday he hopes Illinois lawmakers resume work to end an epic budget standoff next week when they return to Springfield for a brief session and not just focus on trying to override his vetoes.

The Republican governor said he wants to meet with legislative leaders Monday to discuss how to proceed, but Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan hasn’t responded. Madigan’s spokesman didn’t immediately respond to calls for comment.

Illinois hasn’t had a budget in more than 16 months, resulting in cuts to social service providers, some of whom have shut down altogether. Higher education institutions are receiving less funding than they have in the past and face an uncertain future.

The state is operating under a partial budget approved in June. But that spending plan was meant to last only until January, allowing lawmakers and the governor to wait until after the November elections to resume negotiations.

The former venture capitalist also released details Friday about charitable contributions from his family’s foundation that totaled more than $11.6 million last year.

Republican Rauner’s adjustable gross income in 2015 was $187.6 million.

Almost $170 million came from investments.

Protest threat prompts school to cancel classes

CHICAGO – A Catholic high school on Chicago’s South Side canceled Friday classes amid concern about a demonstration, which was later postponed, to protest the fatal police shooting of a black man and a series of racially charged text messages from students.

Eva Lewis, who helped organize the Black Lives Matter demonstration planned by youth in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, said it was called off after the group received online death threats. She said the activists would voice their safety concerns during a meeting Friday afternoon with Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, the Marist High School principal, local officials and others.

The meeting comes amid increased tensions in the predominantly white neighborhood that is home to many police officers, firefighters and other city employees. An off-duty police officer

Lawmakers return to the state Capitol every year for a few days in November for what’s called a veto session because it’s their opportunity to override the governor on legislation he’s rejected. Because new lawmakers are not sworn in until January, Democrats continue to have the 71 votes needed in the House to override legislation Rauner vetoed this year.

In all, there are 35 vetoed bills lawmakers can try to override. One of those bills would create an automatic voter registration in Illinois. It passed with bipartisan support but Rauner vetoed it in August.

Movie theater owner gets nine years for tax fraud

WOODRIDGE – The Illinois attorney general said a suburban Chicago theater owner has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for a tax fraud scheme worth nearly $6 million.

State officials said Thursday that 59-year-old Ted Bulthaup of Woodridge owes the state about $2 million, the U.S. Small Business Administration more than $1 million and First Community Bank in Plainfield nearly $400,000.

Bulthaup pleaded guilty in July to one count of sales tax evasion and one count of financial institution fraud.

Trump elevates Pence’s role on transition team The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump shook up his transition team Friday as he plunged into the work of setting up his administration, elevating Vice President-elect Mike Pence to head the operations. The move, one of the first key decisions as Trump pivots from campaigning to governing, amounted to a demotion for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who had been running the Republican’s transition planning for months.

On the heels of Trump’s upset victory this week, his team has begun to embark upon building a government, an enormous undertaking that likely requires Trump to alter his hands-on management style and consider going outside his small, insular group of loyalists. the Trump family will play in the White House – as well as Trump’s ability to sever ties between the administration and sprawling family business – after the celebrity businessman repeatedly said during the campaign that his grown children would not follow him to Washington and instead run the Trump Organization.

Trump’s remarks about the Affordable Care Act also raised some eyebrows Friday.

He told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that, after speaking with Obama at the White House the day before, he was considering keeping the clause that allows children to stay on their parents’ insurance policies. He has previously said he may keep the prohibition against insurers denying coverage because of patients’ existing conditions.

He also said that he wants “a country that loves each other” but said he did not regret his incendiary rhetoric during the campaign.

Schools report racist incidents after election

In the wake of Donald Trump’s election, reports of racist incidents are emerging from the nation’s schools and universities, including students who chanted “white power” and called black classmates “cotton pickers.”

Reporting by The Associated Press and local media outlets has identified more than 20 such encounters beginning on Election Day, many involving people too young to cast a ballot.

At the University of New Mexico, a Muslim engineering student said a man attempted to snatch off her hijab Tuesday while she was studying.

“I turned around and there’s a really buff guy wearing a Trump shirt,” freshman Leena Aggad said Friday. “He reaches his hand out to my forehead and attempts to pull my scarf off.”

Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League office that monitors extremism, said young people “were watching and observing this presidential campaign as closely as anyone else.” Now that the campaign is over, “the impact of what they have seen is not just going to go away.”

On Wednesday, minority students at a high school in Gurnee, Illinois, organized a meeting and protest after a “whites only” message was found scrawled on a bathroom door. The same day in Michigan, students at Royal Oak Middle School were filmed chanting “build a wall” in the cafeteria.

At Trump’s alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, black freshmen were added to a group chat in which one post read “daily lynching,” and one participant was called a “dumb slave.”

School officials are meeting with student groups to respond.

Also in Pennsylvania, two students at the York County School of Technol-

ogy held a Donald Trump sign in a hallway as someone shouted “white power,” an incident captured on video and widely shared on Facebook.

The president of the local NAACP said the video showed a hallway full of loud students so any teacher or administrator who was monitoring would have known what was happening. Sandra Thompson added that the parents of black children in local schools have been told to “go back to Africa.”

School administrators in Vice President-elect Mike Pence’s hometown of Columbus, Indiana, called for civility and respect after reports of Hispanic students being taunted. Felipe Martinez told The Indianapolis Star that his two sons were twice intimidated with chants of “build that wall,” including on Election Day. The chant was common at Trump campaign rallies.

The morning after the election, leaflets from the Ku Klux Klan showed up in a neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama. At Central Texas University in San Marcos, police were investigating who posted fliers Thursday around campus urging the formation of “tar and feather vigilante squads” and threatening to “arrest and torture” campus diversity advocates.

In Durham, North Carolina, two walls were spray-painted with the statement “Black lives don’t matter and neither does your vote.”

The words – and in some cases violence – cut both ways.

In Louisiana, a university football coach disciplined four players in response to a locker room video showing members of the team dancing and singing the lyrics of a profane anti-Trump rap song. Anti-Trump protests have swept U.S. cities, with one turning violent in Portland, Oregon, as demonstrators smashed windows and set trash afire Thursday night.

Outrage and fear fuel anti-Trump protests

PORTLAND, Ore. – Spurred by fear and outrage, protesters around the country rallied and marched Friday as they have done daily since Donald Trump’s presidential election victory.

The spirited demonstrations on college campuses and along downtown streets were mostly peaceful after previous outbreaks of window-smashing and fire-setting.

Evening marches disrupted traffic in Miami and Atlanta while organizers said people gathered on Boston Common in what was billed as a rally for peace and love.

Earlier, hundreds of people attended another “love rally” in Washington Square Park in Manhattan.

Leslie Holmes, 65, a website developer from Wilton, Connecticut, took an hourlong train ride to the demonstration – her first protest since the 1970s, when she hit the streets of San Francisco to oppose the Vietnam War. She described herself as an armchair liberal but declared, “I’m not going to be armchair anymore.”

“I don’t want to live in a country where my friends aren’t included, and my friends are fearful, and my children are going to grow up in a world that’s frightening, and my granddaughters can look forward to being excluded from jobs and politics and fulfilling their potential, so I’m here for them,” she said.

More than 200 people carrying

signs gathered on the steps of the Washington state Capitol. The group chanted “not my president” and “no Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.” In Tennessee, Vanderbilt University students sang civil rights songs and marched through campus across a Nashville street, temporarily blocking traffic. A protest also occurred in Minneapolis.

In Chicago, multiple groups planned protests through Saturday.

Nadia Gavino, 25, learned about the rallies on Twitter and protested Thursday evening.

Gavino, whose father is from Peru and whose mother is of Mexican and Lithuanian heritage, said she took Trump’s harshest statements about immigrants and Latinos personally.

“I obviously agree that he’s racist, he’s sexist, he’s phobic, he’s misogynistic. He’s all these things you don’t want in a leader,” she said.

Ashley Lynne Nagel, 27, said she joined a Thursday night demonstration in Denver.

“I have a leader I fear for the first time in my life,” said Nagel, a Bernie Sanders supporter who voted for Hillary Clinton.

“It’s not that we’re sore losers,” she said. “It’s that we are genuinely upset, angry, terrified that a platform based off of racism, xenophobia and homophobia has become so powerful and now has complete control of our representation.”

Demonstrations also were planned Saturday in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and other areas.

Thumbs-up to county’s efficient voting process Thumbs-up: To a relatively smooth election night.

More than 70 percent of registered voters participated in this week’s election, more than in 2012. About 20 percent voted before Election Day, but most waited until Tuesday to make the trip to their local polling place to cast a ballot. Although there were long lines at times at some polling stations, there were no major disruptions. This was the first election where people could actually register and vote at their polling place on Election Day, and that service did cause two local polling stations to remain open well after their scheduled 7 p.m. closing time. But if such measures enable more people to participate in the process, then they should continue. We were pleased to see so many votes cast with so few difficulties. Kudos to all those who voted, worked at one of the county’s 40 polling places, and to DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson and his staff for having a nearly complete tally of countywide results posted online just after midnight.

Thumbs-down: To post-election mayhem. While we are pleased at our leaders’ dedication to ensuring a peaceful transition of power, not all of their backers have shown the same willingness – or not right away.

Whether it is anti-Trump protesters blocking city streets, throwing bottles at police and burning American flags, or the stories that have spread on social media and in the news about racial intimidation and assault, we find it disheartening and many others do as well.

Thumbs-up: To the first football game played at Guaranteed Rate Field. There was an announced crowd of 10,180 on hand for the NIU Huskies matchup with the rival Toledo Rockets on Wednesday at the recently renamed home of the White Sox. It was an interesting night that seemed to make a weeknight game accessible to Chicago-area fans. We don’t mind a change in venue every now and then to make things interesting, but we also are mindful that taking home games out of DeKalb has a local economic impact.

Still, it was a novel concept that drew a good crowd – even if the game ended in a 31-24 NIU loss.

Thumbs-down: To electing a judge who cannot serve. Rhonda Crawford was the only name listed on the ballot this week in Cook County, and she won her election against a write-in candidate. But she can’t be sworn in to the $180,000 job; Crawford, a law clerk, was fired from her job and had her law license suspended because she put on a black robe and posed as a judge to hear traffic cases. Electing judges is a stretch for voters anyway – often people know little about the candidates, and it’s doubtful that many of the people who voted for Crawford knew she could not serve and that she had been disgraced. But there were no other names on the ballot, and it’s hard enough to mount a write-in campaign for any office let alone a judgeship. It’s a messy state of affairs. Being a judge is an important and prestigious position – we hope that whoever eventually fills the position is capable and qualified.

Reforms needed to break budget impasse As procrastinating teens will put off a big homework assignment, this summer Illinois’ leaders found a way to put off addressing our state’s budget problems until after the election.

The election is behind us now, and a stopgap spending plan that was approved in July will expire less than seven weeks from now.

While the stopgap budget bought legislators some time, it solved nothing. Illinois now has more than $9 billion in unpaid bills.

Lawmakers are set to return Tuesday to Springfield, and there are cold realities to face: Pension payments are consuming an ever-larger share of state revenues each year, and the system must be changed in a manner consistent with the state constitution. Plans to offer employees a choice in benefits might be the best way to go, although Rauner and Democrats already failed to reach an agreement on this once already.

Democrats seem eager to impose another income tax increase on residents, but there should be no tax increases. Illinois residents already are overtaxed.

What’s needed instead are spending cuts and reforms such as those that Gov. Bruce Rauner pledged to implement at the time of his election – including reforms to workers’ compensation, limits on collective bargaining and term limits

for legislators. These ideas were put forward during the campaign, Rauner was elected by the voters of our state, and yet House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton have flouted the will of the people in refusing to negotiate them.

Madigan justifies this refusal to work with the governor by claiming he is defending the middle class – but our state has not had a budget since July 2015, and everyone, from the wealthiest residents to the poorest, has been hurt as a result.

Perhaps that’s one reason why Republicans gained seats in the recent elections. New legislators will not take office until January. But even with the lame ducks still in office, it seems unlikely that Democrats will be able to push another tax increase on the people of our state without any changes to the way things operate.

State Rep. Lou Lang, a Skokie Democrat, told the Chicago Tribune that the Republicans’ meager gains in this election would do nothing to break the stalemate between Madigan and Rauner, and speculated it was possible there might be no budget for all four years of Rauner’s term.

We’ve already seen the damage that almost 18 months without a budget has done. It would be unconscionable for legislators and the governor to allow this situation to continue.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Compare that with DeKaIb. In an email I was given, Mayor John Rey explained that there was no time log for Mr. Frieders.

This leads to several questions. In DeKalb, why are there no checks and balances when it comes to Mr. Frieders’ work? Does it bother you that there is not even a time log for Mr. Frieders and why can no one can verify that he works the time required three days a week in his contract?

Why does Pingree Grove get better records from Mr. Frieders than DeKalb does? Does it bother anyone on the City Council that not one of them can check on the amount of time he actually works for his annual $204,000 salary?

Injustice for Judge Merrick Garland There is plenty of time, in the upcoming lame-duck session of Congress, to give President Barack Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Judge Merrick Garland, a hearing and put his nomination to a vote. That vote should be favorable: Garland, 63, is able, moderate, respected and seasoned, an appellate jurist who has previously been confirmed, with significant Republican support, for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Of course, this will not happen, because it does not suit Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Kentucky) and his fellow Republicans. Garland’s nomination should have been considered and voted on in March when Obama sent his name

to the Senate as a replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia. That did not happen because, with the long-term ideological tilt of the court at stake, McConnell argued that the voters’ choice for president in November should get the pick.

This was a gamble on a GOP victory in the fall; and there is no denying that, in political terms, it has paid off. Contrary to predictions that voters would punish GOP obstructionism, they appear to have rewarded it. President-elect Donald Trump will choose Scalia’s successor next year, a GOP Senate undoubtedly will confirm him – and the court will, in all likelihood, shift rightward rather than left in the coming years. Someday McConnell’s example may be invoked against his side – those who

practice situational ethics must be prepared to have situational ethics practiced against them – but there’s no arguing with his success.

Except to say, perhaps quaintly, that we don’t regard political success as the only relevant measurement here. In addition to the personal injustice to Garland, the majority leader’s ploy wrought harm to basic norms of democratic accountability.

Those should have dictated respect for the majority will, as expressed in the incumbency of Obama – not anticipatory deference to whatever might happen in November. Any other rule is inherently unstable, as became evident in the waning days of campaign 2016; when it appeared that Hillary Clinton, not Trump, might be the winner, Republican

politicians started moving the goalposts, suggesting that they might not approve any replacement for Scalia, or even fill subsequent vacancies, until the GOP had regained control of the White House.

In support of his position, McConnell accurately cited similar musings by then-Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Delaware, during 1992, which was then-President George H.W. Bush’s final year in office. To that, we can only reply that this purported “Biden Rule” never should have been treated as a precedent, and would not have been if Republicans had maintained this year the objections to it that they voiced in 1992. Two wrongs don’t make a right, not even in politics.

doubt. These guys know we have to stick together, and if we keep doing our thing, it’s going to be OK.” The Cogs managed only 135 yards of offense, while Johnsburg gained 299 – including 208 and three scores for Peete.

Zach Butler passed for 95 yards for the Cogs, but threw three interceptions. The Cogs also fumbled twice in the first half.

Genoa-Kingston moved the ball early – 101 total yards in the first half – but couldn’t score. Johnsburg got on the board when Adam Jayko returned a low punt 37 yards for a score and a 7-0 lead. G-K couldn’t score on its next drive, then Johnsburg scored on a 28-yard draw up the middle with 1:42 left, putting the Skyhawks up, 14-0.

“We just came out in the second half and wanted to put up a fight,” Wewetzer said.

“We did the best we could, but they’re just a flat-out good team. Mad respect to them all.”

As was McCarty, Wewetzer said he was pleased with the season, even if it ended with a loss.

“We made a lot of accomplishments, and hit a lot of our goals from the start of the season,” Wewetzer said. “It just didn’t end the way we wanted.”

JOHNSBURG – Two big interceptions by the Genoa-Kingston football team in the third quarter made Friday night’s game close for a short while, but two first-half fumbles and a big second half from Alex Peete were too much to overcome.

The Johnsburg senior running back heated up late, and the No. 2 Skyhawks knocked off the No. 3 Cogs, 42-13, in a Class 4A quarterfinal.

The Skyhawks (12-0) will play No. 1 Herscher or No. 4 Phillips, who meet today.

Meanwhile, the Cogs’ (11-1) season ends with one blemish. The last time the program made the quarterfinals was in 1988.

“We’re going to look at it as a great season,” McCarty said. “You finish 11-1, quarterfinals, first time in over 25 years, conference champs for first time since 1992, first undefeated (regular) season since 1977 – these kids have nothing to hang their heads about.”

After falling down 21-0 at halftime – the Skyhawks scored all three touchdowns in the final 8 minutes of the second quarter – the Cogs drew to within in a single score with two touchdowns in a 30-second span.

Klint Wewetzer started the Genoa-Kingston scoring by intercepting Riley Buchanan and going 21 yards on the return to cut the lead to 21-6 with 7:41 left in the third. On Johnsburg’s next offensive play, Buchanan was picked off again, and Zach Miller returned the interception to the Skyhawks’ 3.

Aidan Simmons punched it in on the Cogs’ first play of the drive, and Genoa-Kingston was down, 21-13, with 7:13 left.

“We go to halftime 21-0, then 13-21 right there – we just keep fighting,” Wewetzer said.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Having reached the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs for the second straight year, the DeKalb football team is looking to establish itself as one of the top programs in the state, as Cary-Grove has done over the past decade.

Coach Matt Weckler said the Barbs can take the next step in the process by beating Cary-Grove.

The No. 7 Barbs play host to the No. 2 Trojans at 1 p.m. today, with the winner advancing to face either No. 12 Lake Forest or No. 1 Prairie Ridge.

“Cary-Grove is one of those programs that we kind of want to get to be where they’re at,” Weckler said. “For us to be there, we have to beat an opponent like Cary-Grove – very solid, very

The Trojans (10-1) haven’t lost since Week 1, 26-14 to Prairie Ridge. They haven’t given up more than 14 points or scored less than 33 since. Last week,

they topped Grayslake North, 56-7, to earn a second straight quarterfinal berth. They have made the playoffs every year since 2004, making it to at least the second round every time. They’ve played in four state title games, with a win in 2009 to cap a perfect season.

Cary-Grove runs a triple-option offense, led by quarterback Bobby Collins. He has 89 carries for 844 yards and 12 scores. Tyler Pennington has 784 yards with a team-high 113 carries and 13 touchdowns.

Collins has completed 20 of his 37 passes for seven touchdowns and an interception.

said the Trojans are going to try to keep the ball out of DeKalb’s hands – something Antioch did last week against the Barbs on the first drive when it rattled off an 8:07 drive that netted a field goal, but couldn’t maintain for the whole game in a 36-3 loss.

“I think our offense would be our best defense right now,” Seaburg said.

“So we need to extend drives and get first downs to keep their offense off the field. Antioch tried to do that, and in the first half they did a pretty good job of that. We have to do the same thing, and score when we have the ball.”

Seaburg said defensively the Trojans will need to stop senior quarterback Derek Kyler, who has completed 61 percent of his 193 pass attempts for 1,854 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also has rushed for 699 yards and nine scores.

“Everything they do is about their quarterback,” Seaburg said. “That’s not to take anything away from the other players on the team, but everything starts with him. We have to do

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore football coach Joe Ryan said he never has seen a team improve more from Week 1 than this year’s Spartans club.

The 13-seed Spartans have a chance to prove it when they take on No. 1 Sterling in a Class 5A quarterfinal today.

“I’ve told them in all my years ... this group has probably improved more from Week 1 to Week 12 than any group I’ve ever had,” Ryan said. “They just every, every week make huge gains. So if we do that again this week, we’ll be in good shape on Saturday.”

Sycamore lost, 38-6, to the Warriors in Week 1. The teams meet at 1 p.m. today with the winner set to face No. 14 Marian Central or No. 7 Vernon Hills in the semifinals.

“The pretest didn’t go so well,” Ryan said. “Hopefully, we’ve done enough through the season to give ourselves a chance in the post-test.”

The loss for the Spartans (7-4) in Sterling was part of a rough 1-3 start to the season. But they’ve won six of their past seven, and beat Rochelle in the

“I don’t think our kids get caught up in scores,” Ryan said. “Again, we’ve said this all along, our kids know what good is. They can watch them on film and know they’re good. They don’t need to see the scores. They know

we’re going to have to be really good at what we do to be successful.”

Sterling coach Jon Schlemmer said he expects a closer game this time.

“That was a long time ago,” Schlemmer said. “A lot of things have changed for them and us,” Schlemmer said.

“The fact of the matter is, it seems like a lot longer ago than you might think.

We talk about the strides we made, and by flipping on the film you can see the different things Sycamore does well and does right.”

Quarterback Trey Morse leads the Sterling offense, passing for 1,076 yards with 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He also has run for 663 yards, third best on the team behind Nyrel Sullivan (97 carries, 818 yards, 18 TDs) and Latrell Vaughn (84-751-10). Turner Morse has been the top receiver (25372-6).

“The key is to try to keep the ball away from their offense, but their defense is extremely fast, disciplined, well-coached and good,” Ryan said. “So when you say, ‘Well, I want to have a 17-play drive.’ I don’t think they’ve had that against them this year. It’s really difficult because of how good they are.”

Sycamore quarterback Ty Sulaver has thrown for 1,596 yards this year, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions.

He also has run for 413 yards on 104 carries, scoring six times.

“We have to stop their quarterback.

Man, he’s good,” Schlemmer said. “He can throw the ball to the perimeter, and [Jared Tolzin] – we saw that DeKalb receiver (Cole Tucker), and he’s awful good, but theirs is awful special, too.

We have to contain what they can do, and it all starts with the quarterback.”

Tolzin had a breakout game last week at Rochelle, hauling in three touchdown passes in the second quarter. He’s caught eight TD passes this year, has 40 catches and 583 receiving yards.

“We have a really good chance going into this,” Tolzin said. “The first week, we really didn’t play our game.

This time around, I think we’re going to have a lot better shot.”

Ryan said he thinks the team is capable of a better performance.

“They throttled us Week 1, and, hopefully, we’ve made improvements,” Ryan said. “I know they have, so, hopefully, we can slow them down a little bit.”

went 2 for 4 from 3-point range, with the rest of the team combining to go 0 for 10.

“Marin Maric decided to dominate on the inside and he made big play after big play,” Montgomery said. “We couldn’t get a shot to fall. ... A key offensively to the game was pound the ball inside, so our inside game was working. ... If your guards struggle to make a shot on the perimeter, it’s going to be one of those games.”

It also was the first game in more than two years for senior guard Dontel Highsmith, who has dealt with ACL injuries. He finished with five points in 21 minutes, but also missed a pair of free throws late in regulation.

“It was good to be back, but I had to get the rust out, those free throws, man,” Highsmith said. “It was killing me. I liked how our team stayed poised in overtime and came out with the win.”

DeKALB – Behind a dramatic two days, Northern Illinois wrestler Shawn Scott finished in the top 12 at the NCAA National Championships a season ago.

For the 197-pounder, it wasn’t good enough.

The senior returns as a captain of the Huskies and is eyeing a chance at getting on the podium with a top-eight finish at the NCAA Championships as he closes out his career at NIU. “Just want to be on the podium. You do something for 16 years, you have your mind on one goal,” Scott said.

“For me, to be happy with all the work I put in, to be on the podium will actually give me that enjoyment and a story to tell later in my life. ... I have a bittersweet memory making it to the Round of 12, it was a very short memory for me. I had a goal, and I didn’t achieve it. The bad taste has been sticking with me since then.”

Scott said he wrestled a little timid at the National Championships, in which he recorded four wins – including a wrestle-in match to even get into the field of 32 wrestlers. NIU wrestling coach Ryan Ludwig said Scott has worked on being more offensive in his approach, saying that Scott’s perfectionist mindset can be both a positive and a slight negative.

“He has so much offense, and he’s really picky, and he’s a bit of a perfectionist,” Ludwig said. “We’re just on him to get out there and get the first takedown right away, not looking for the perfect opportunity but creating it.”

Redshirt freshman Caden McWhirter made a splash during the Huskies’ first tournament of the season last weekend at Eastern Michigan.

Wrestling at 157, McWhirter picked up a victory over a wrestler who was ranked in the top 10 in the country – Ohio State sophomore Jake Ryan – en route to a second-place finish.

Ludwig said he expects a lot from the freshman, who lost to Central Michigan’s Colin Heffernan in the championship at the Eastern Michigan Open.

After the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team’s performance at the line allowed Indiana State to force overtime, Huskies sophomore guard Laytwan Porter sealed the win with a pair of free throws in the closing seconds of a wild 80-78 victory in the season opener at the NIU Convocation Center.

“I thought it was a heck of a opener,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “Clutch situations, you have to make your free throws at the end of the game to close it out.”

In the final 59 seconds of regulation, the Huskies went 3 for 8 from the free-throw line. Porter making both free throws with 4.6 left in overtime was the first time a Huskies player made both in seven trips.

After a put-back dunk by Huskies senior guard Aaric Armstead tied it at 78 with 46 seconds remaining in overtime, Porter came up with a block on a layup by Jordan Barnes and was fouled taking the ball to the basket in the closing seconds.

“I got to make big plays, I’m the point guard,” said Porter, who finished with seven points, five rebounds and four assists. “I got to make sure I’m always on top of my game. Free throws I should make every time I go to the line. I just went to the line with a main focus on knocking them down.”

NIU (1-0) held a 70-63 lead with 37 seconds left before the Sycamores stormed back to tie it at 72 and force overtime.

Indiana State guard Brenton Scott scored a game-high 28 points and hit a 3-pointer with just more than a second left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Before that make, he was 1 for 10 from 3-point range.

NIU senior big man Marin Maric scored a career-high 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Maric, who was triple-teamed by the Sycamores at times, was 11 for 14 from the field with two 3-pointers.

Sophomore forward Jaylen Key had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore wing Levi Bradley had 14 for the Huskies.

Newfound confidence could carry Bears past Bucs

Coming into the season, it seemed the Bears had a fairly easy schedule, with the second half possibly being a bit more challenging than the first.

But as quickly as things change in the NFL these days, I always caution folks about reading too much into a schedule beBEARS fore you have INSIDER to play it.

As it turns Hub out, with the Arkush Cowboys and Texans in first place and the hot early start by the Eagles, the schedule, although not horrible, isn’t that easy, and the second half might now be the softer side.

In fact, the most winnable game the Bears have left beyond the Dec. 4 matchup with the 49ers at home is Sunday in Tampa.

Of course, that’s not to say the Bears are a lock.

Jameis Winston looks like a guy who’s going to be a very good quarterback, and might even earn that “franchise” mantle, but he still is a ways off.

If the Bears fail to pressure Winston, confuse him with coverages and take the ball away from him a couple of times – which has been a shortcoming of this defense – he will beat them.

But other teams have had little trouble doing that to him this year, particularly in Tampa. His 17 touchdowns are impressive, but his nine picks and three fumbles not so much.

Eight of those TD passes are to the NFL’s leader in that category, Mike Evans, who also is among the league leaders in drops. But Evans still clearly is one of the best young receivers in the league and a bit of a matchup nightmare.

CB Deiondre’ Hall (ankle) is out, while DE Mitch Unrein (back), WR Eddie Royal (toe), NT Eddie Goldman (ankle), LB Pernell McPhee (knee), CB Bryce Callahan (hamstring) and CB Tracy Porter (knee) are listed as questionable.

Unrein did not practice Friday after being limited in Thursday’s practice, so his status for Sunday is the most uncertain of the group. If he can’t go, it likely would mean more snaps for rookie Jonathan Bullard, who made some nice plays against the Vikings before the bye.

“I like where he is now,” coach John Fox said. “He took a better step over the last couple games. We’re excited about where his future is going, and, hopefully, it happens fast this week.”

Fox said he’s seen the third-round pick get more comfortable, “so he’s cutting loose and playing a little bit more violent or aggressive.”

OTs Kyle Long and Josh Sitton were not on the injury report and are set to return. Long missed 11/2 games with a triceps injury, and Sitton missed two with an ankle injury.

Fox said Goldman, who hasn’t played since injuring his ankle in Week 2, looked “real good” during his first week back at practice.

“You’re never really sure when they kind of start getting back into it, but, obviously, the bye week and that rest and that time off helped him, and he had a productive week,” Fox said.

The Barbs are in the quarterfinals for the second straight year, losing to Montini, 49-14, last season. Weckler has guided the Barbs to the playoffs all four years he’s been with the program after they made the postseason only twice since 1982.

“We feel pretty good going in,” Weckler said. “It helps when you have a veteran team that’s been in this position before and knows how to prepare for a quarterfinal team against a very good, well-known opponent.”

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team had a huge third quarter and opened the season with a 90-70 win at Loyola on Friday night in Chicago.

The Huskies blew open the game by outscoring the Ramblers, 25-9, in the third quarter.

Sophomore shooter Courtney Woods scored a team-high 21 points and was on fire in the second half, scoring 17 and connecting on five 3-pointers in the final two quarters.

“Courtney is that kind of player,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “She’s one of those kids when she gets comfortable, as far as shooting the basketball, she doesn’t think she’ll miss.”

Junior forward Kelly Smith scored 15 points and had seven rebounds, senior Cassidy Glenn had 14 points and six rebounds, freshman Janae Poisson had 12 points, and senior Ally Lehman had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Huskies, who play Milwaukee on Wednesday at home, only led 44-43 heading into halftime before the lopsided third quarter.

The Huskies wrestle at the Purdue Duals on Sunday and have their first of four home matches Nov. 29 against Old Dominion.

Fiber, probiotics relieve IBS Dear Dr. K: I have irritable bowel syndrome with alternating constipation and diarrhea.

Will eating more fiber help? What about probiotics or other non-medical treatments?

Dear Reader: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common intestinal disorder with many unpleasant symptoms. Many people with IBS go back and forth between diarrhea and constipation, with pain and bloating in between. Others always have diarrhea or constipation.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for IBS. However, there are a number of things you can do to improve your symptoms.

Adding fiber to your diet can help relieve constipation. Fiber increases the stool’s bulk and speeds its movement through the gastrointestinal tract. It also may ease abdominal pain, and even improve diarrhea.

You can increase the fiber in your diet by eating whole grains, bran cereals and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. You also can try a fiber supplement containing psyllium or methylcellulose.

When introducing fiber to your diet, do so gradually. Too much, too fast can cause excessive gas, cramping and bloating.

Drink lots of water or other liquids. And be aware that for some people, a high-fiber diet may increase bloating or gas. I speak from both professional and personal experience.

You also asked about probiotics. That means we need to talk about bacteria. The world, including our bodies, is filled with bacteria. Some are good for us, some bad, some neutral. Probiotics are living bacteria we swallow in order to improve our health.

They come in the form of capsules, yogurts and even some fruit juices.

Probiotics generally are considered safe, but there’s not yet enough evidence to say they effectively treat IBS. Some of my pa-

In particular, certain sugarlike molecules, known as FODMAPs, can be difficult to digest. FODMAPs are found in a wide variety of foods including milk, some fruits and vegetables, wheat, rye, high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. A low-FODMAP diet may tame IBS symptoms.

IBS symptoms also are often triggered by emotional stress. The following stress-management techniques may help: • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can help reframe negative thoughts into more positive, productive ways of thinking. This can help to improve symptoms and quality of life.

• Relaxation Response Training and Meditation are techniques that can help reduce nervous system activity (the intestines are partly controlled by the nervous system) and relax muscles.

• Yoga seeks to bring body and mind into balance. It can serve as a form of self-relaxation.

• Biofeedback is a mind-body technique.

Participants use a biofeedback machine to see and learn to control their body’s response to pain. Fiber and probiotics definitely help many people with IBS. Fortunately, they are not the only treatments. And you’ll notice I didn’t even mention conventional medicines, since more “natural” approaches often do the trick.

DEAR ABBY I’m 19, and for the past year I Jeanne have been out Phillips of my parents’ house (at last!).

I’m realizing now the years I spent with Mom and Dad were different than other people’s. My parents weren’t physically abusive, but they were mentally and emotionally abusive, and it has scarred me in some ways. Because I was never allowed to speak my mind, I shut down if anybody raises his or her voice to me.

When I was growing up, they used exercise as a punishment. If my brothers or I were late, it was 10 pushups. They also forced us to go through exercise programs. Naturally, as soon as I was free from them, I stopped exercising altogether.

I now realize I need to exercise again as I am technically obese, and I need to lose the weight while I’m still young. My problem is, I’m not motivated. I tell myself I’ll go out and run, signed up for a gym – even got a running buddy.

But I find myself making excuses and tricking myself out of going. What are some ways I can help myself mentally so I can get going on this ever-growing problem? – Chubby In California Dear Chubby: Your parents may have meant well when they insisted you and your siblings get involved in exercise programs, but they were wrong to use exercise as a punishment.

While I can see why you now view exercise that way, its benefits are more far-reaching than weight loss. Being physically active benefits your heart and brain, and in addition, can be an effective stress reducer. It doesn’t necessarily have to be running. Perhaps tennis, bowling or dancing would be more enjoyable for you.

“Tricking” yourself can work two ways, but while I don’t advise tricking yourself to make yourself get off the couch, I think the adage “the way to get out of a jam is not to get into one in the first place” applies here. Some suggestions: When you get out of bed in the morning, have your exercise clothes already laid out.

Instead of reading or listening to the news, put them on immediately. Then eat some protein to boost your energy, and go out and do what you need to do.

Don’t expect to run a marathon immediately.

Start slowly and remember stamina isn’t built overnight. Eventually, you will establish a routine – like brushing your teeth.

I won’t lie to you. It takes discipline. But now that you have “escaped” from your parents, you have to be your own parent, so it’s up to you not to let yourself be lazy.

P.S. When you’re on your way out the door, thank your higher power you are able to do exercise because many people are not so fortunate. And if you catch yourself slacking off after trying what I have suggested, then consider consulting a licensed mental health professional to overcome your aversion to exercise.

South starts with seven top tricks: two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club (at trick one).

By far the best chance for two more winners is to play on diamonds. After taking the first trick with the club jack, South should cash the diamond ace. Here, when West plays low, declarer continues with the king. When everyone follows, declarer plays a third round, and he might well end up with an overtrick. This play has an a priori 92.4 percent chance of success. (If West plays the diamond nine or 10 on the first round, South should next lead a low diamond toward dummy’s jack.)

At the table in a social game, South slipped: He crossed to dummy with a spade at trick two, then played a heart to his jack. West defended accurately by taking the trick and leading a second low club to keep communication with his partner. Now the contract was over.

Public Notice On Monday, November 21, 2016 beginning at 8:30 AM until a total of 3000 applications are received, the Housing Authority of the County of DeKalb (HACD) will open its Low Income Public Housing 1, 2, & 3 Bedroom Waiting Lists. Applicants must be income eligible & qualify for 2 or more local preferences. Applications WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED if the applicant does not qualify for 2 or more local preferences. ~ Applications will be accepted on-line at www.dekcohousing.com. If you are a person with disabilities & require an accommodation to apply to our programs please contact the Housing Authority of the County of DeKalb at 815.758.2692. If you do not have a computer, you may access the web site through any computer connection at the public library or at the Authority's main office. ~ Applicants will need an e-mail address to complete the on-line process. E-mail will be the primary means of communicating with applicants; therefore, applicants MUST monitor their email for waiting list updates as well as their standard mailing address. ~ The waiting lists will be open from 8:30 AM until a total of 3000 Applications are received on November 21, 2016. Once 3000 applications are received, HACD will close the waiting lists to the general public.
