Remembering the school fire that devastated a village DEKALB COUNTY LIFE Barry Schrader

It was just after midnight Monday, March 8, 1954, when the Kingston Grade School burned to the ground.

The last surviving teacher who remembers that fire, Alice Paulson, spoke about it Monday at the Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center, with five former students, all in their 70s, present. She told about the phone call early that morning from Genoa-Kingston schools Superintendent Clarence Louderback, explaining there would be no school that day.

However, all the teachers and other staff went to the scene, where they found their school destroyed, along with all the books, desks, lesson plans, grading books, school records and every piece of equipment used by the 150 students, six teachers and Principal Carl Tucker.

The cause of the blaze was never determined, but fire officials said it started at the front of the school and was suspicious in nature. Kingston had about 300 residents in 1954, and they pulled together to find places to continue the school year.

Paulson said the classes were scattered around the community. Two grades moved into the second floor of the Masonic Hall, three more into the basement and first floor of the Kingston Methodist Church and four other grades into the White Oak Grange Hall basement and first floor.

Her pupils were fourth-graders and half of the fifth grade. They were crowded so closely in the church room that when one student had to go to the bathroom or anywhere else, every student in that row had to get up so one could pass by. The “bathroom” was a chemical toilet in the corner of the room with walls that didn’t reach the ceiling. The strong odor of chemicals sometimes forced her to take her class outside.

In good weather they went across Route 72, over a double set of railroad tracks, the Kishwaukee River bridge and into Kingston Park, where they put picnic tables together so they could all hear their teachers.

There was little money in the school district budget, so no new blackboards, library books or even workbooks were acquired for the rest of that year. Paulson recalled duplicating work-

Her husband, Ed, was co-owner of Genoa Offset, and his printing business provided rolls of paper for art projects. There was no longer a cafeteria, so children who lived in town were encouraged to go home for lunch and the farm kids brought lunches.

It took only 11 months from the time of the fire to rebuild the grade school on the same land near where the old building once stood.

Paulson emphasized that despite the hardships and difficulty of teaching that spring, the pupils’ standardized test scores never dropped.

She added that the experience made them all pull together, and that the children became stronger, more resilient and supportive of each other. There were no school counselors in those days, and few fire regulations and occupancy limits, something she said would never be tolerated today. The six former students gathered around her to share experiences and reminisce after the talk.

By the way, Paulson wrote a book about the fire in 2005 titled “Fire! Kingston School Destroyed.” It is full of class photos, news clippings and documents related to the school, its rebuilding, and reminiscences from several of the students. It is a good read.

Four-day volunteer event kicks off for Feed My Starving Children

SYCAMORE – While some volunteers stood in small assembly lines packing food and others carried supplies, Leroy Greathouse of Sycamore worked with the group putting expiration stickers on the packages.

“We got a sit-down job; I’m 89 years old, so I had to sit down,” he said. “I’m just glad to be here and help out.”

Greathouse was one of about 360 people Thursday who volunteered for the first shift of making MannaPacks to send to impoverished communities around the world through Feed My Starving Children. Each meal consists of about 400 grams of vitamins, dehydrated vegetables, soy protein and rice.

More than 5,000 volunteers are expected to assist in the four-day MobilePack event hosted by the Suter Company in Sycamore.

Greathouse said he participated in the first MobilePack seven years ago, and he has been a member of the Sycamore Kiwanis Club for 35 years.

“As a Kiwanian, we do a lot of service, and one of our themes is serving the children of the world,” he said. “So this fits right in with our whole theme of giving.”

Organizers increased this year’s goal from 1 million to 1.2 million meals because of the effects of Hurricane Matthew in Haiti, one of 70 countries that receive MannaPacks. To achieve this, 14 two-hour shifts were scheduled.

Last year, 1,029,280 meals were packed over the course of 13 shifts, according to the Make a Difference DeKalb County website.

Tim Suter, president and CEO of The Suter Company, said the meals and supplies come from Feed My Starving Children’s permanent site in Aurora, and his company provides volunteers and fundraising from throughout DeKalb County.

“Every meal costs 22 cents, and so we literally raise money 22 cents at a time,” Suter said. “Sometimes we see amazing stories, like kids who know about the event that save change and they come in with a bag of change that might be $50.”

Ashley Halsten, an event leader for Feed My Starving Children, said the mission of the Christian charity is to “feed God’s starving children hungry in body and spirit.”

“We believe that these children are receiving more than just meals when they open those boxes,” she said.

Suter said more than half of the 1 million people in the U.S. who volunteer for Feed My Starving Children each year are children themselves.

Audelia Hernandez, 12, was volunteering at MobilePack for the first time Thursday with her mom, younger brothers and her aunt.

“I think it’s a really nice way to help out, and I plan on doing this again with my family for years after this,” Audelia said.

Suter said about 100 volunteer spots still are open, but he is confident that people will continue to sign up before Sunday. Sign up is available at makeadifferencedkc.org.

“People know that this is live-saving work,” he said.

In addition to the humanitarian aspect, Suter said people also help out because they have fun, as volunteers often come together with their school, church or youth group.

“There’s no other way to describe how you feel until you’ve done it and you realize, ‘Hey, instead of spending two hours sitting in front of the TV, I just went and packed meals and I just saved somebody’s life,’ ” Suter said.

DeKalb hires community development director DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – The city announced that its principal planner has been promoted to community development director.

Jo Ellen Charlton will take over as head of the department after the departure of Ellen Divita. Divita had held the position for about two years before leaving.

After Divita left, Charlton was appointed to lead the department in the interim. The department oversees such services as code enforcement, planning and zoning regulations, and economic development efforts and issues. The staff of at least nine in-

cludes city planners, a neighborhood program specialist and a building inspector.

Charlton had served as the city’s principal planner since June.

“Jo Ellen Charlton brings an intense work ethic, high level of professionalism and strong leadership skills that have and will continue to benefit the city of DeKalb,” City Manager Anne Marie Gaura said in a statement. “She has the unique combination of planning and economic development experience in both the public and private sectors. This perspective enhances the city’s development process in working with the business community.”

Charlton’s experience in the field

of community development includes plan review, long-range planning, economic development, tax increment financing districts, market analysis, downtown redevelopment, industrial revenue bonds and Community Development Block Grant programming, according to a news release from the city.

“Charlton’s experience makes her a perfect fit for this position,” Mayor John Rey said in a statement. “She understands how the city of DeKalb operates, and she has extensive experience in community development as well as downtown revitalization.”

Charlton has worked in both the public and private sectors. Most recently, she worked for WBK Engineer-

ing primarily as the planning consultant for Forest Park and Willowbrook.

Charlton earned a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Illinois. She is a Certified Professional by the American Institute of Certified Planners and a member of the American Planning Association, according to the release.

“I’m excited for the privilege to continue to serve DeKalb in a different capacity” Charlton said in a statement. “I look forward to working with city staff, the City Council and the community to deliver high quality services that support the responsible maintenance, enhancement and development of the community’s properties.”

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A Kingston man accused of raping two girls at a party on his 18th birthday has hired an additional lawyer who has experience in high-profile criminal cases.

Brenton W. Cleveland, 18, of the 34700 block of Glidden Road, Kingston, was charged with unlawful restraint, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault on May 27. If convicted of the most serious charge, criminal sexual assault, he could be sentenced to four to 15 years in prison.

ance Tuesday, criminal defense attorney Gary Johnson appeared alongside Haule. Johnson declined to comment on the case or why he was retained, but said Thursday that he would serve as

co-counsel with Haule in representing Cleveland.

Johnson was elected Kane County state’s attorney in 1988 and served through 1992. He didn’t seek a second term, according to a history of the office.

Johnson successfully defended Stephen Buckley, one of three men indicated for the 1983 murder of Jeanine Nicarico. Another man, Brian Dugan, pleaded guilty to the crime in 2009. Later, Buckley and the two other men initially charged with the murder successfully sued DuPage County for wrongful prosecution, according to Associated Press reports.

Johnson also represented accused cop killer Manuel Salazar in Joliet in his retrial. Salazar was ultimately released, according to a biography posted on Johnson’s website.

Schock indicted on wire fraud, theft counts

PEORIA – An Illinois congressman who resigned amid scrutiny of lavish spending – including a “Downton Abbey”-style redecorating of his Capitol Hill office – was charged Thursday in a wide-ranging federal indictment that alleges he schemed to profit personally from his government job.

The 52-page indictment accuses the once-rising Republican star of brazen efforts to make money, such as buying World Series tickets with campaign funds and reselling them at a profit. When Schock risked missing a connecting flight for a European vacation, the indictment alleges, he paid a private aircraft company more than $8,000 out of his campaign account to fly him from Peoria to Washington.

Schock spent $40,000 in government funds to redecorate his Washington office, including $5,000 on a chandelier, and asked the House to reimburse him for nearly $30,000 worth of camera equipment, prosecutors allege. The indictment said he ran up a $140,000 mileage tab over six years, reimburse-

CHICAGO – Chicago police said they arrested five people as protesters expressed their disapproval of the election of Donald Trump as the nation’s 45th president.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email that an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people protested Wednesday. Among those taken into custody were two men for obstructing traffic, two men for reckless conduct and trespassing, and a boy for trespassing and resisting arrest.

Overall, Guglielmi said there were “no major incidents.”

Rauner asks for meeting before veto session

SPRINGFIELD – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has asked the top leaders in the Illinois General Assembly to meet ahead of the veto session next week.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Rauner’s office confirms that he sent the request Thursday, asking the leaders to meet in Chicago or Springfield. The veto session starts Tuesday.

The leaders include Democratic Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and Illinois House Republican leader Jim Durkin.

Democrat John Cullerton is president of the Illinois Senate and the Republican Illinois Senate leader is Christine Radogno.

Radogno said a meeting is the “prime opportunity” to discuss “comprehensive solutions.”

State legislators head into the veto session with hopes of coming to an agreement on a full state budget and pension reform. The state is operating on a temporary budget approved in July.

FBI, troopers raid offices of Lake County, Ind., sheriff

CROWN POINT, Ind. – The FBI and Indiana State Police raided the offices of Lake County Sheriff John Buncich and seized boxes of documents Thursday, although the target of their investigation remained unclear.

The investigators entered the offices of the Lake County Government Center about 9:30 a.m. and left several hours later. Their cars also were parked Thursday morning outside Buncich’s home in Crown Point, Indiana. FBI Special Agent Bob Ramsey, who appeared outside the sheriff’s home, declined to comment.

Ryan Holmes, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office, said federal authorities were serving search warrants on the sheriff but declined to comment on the nature of the investigation.

Dean Delisle told The Northwest Indiana Times he was seeking a copy of an accident report in an office where police records are kept when investigators entered and ordered everybody including employees to leave the building. He said investigators then began “taking pictures of everything.”

The department is cooperating with

Police: Ex.-state Rep. paid $3K to extortionists

CHICAGO – Information released after an appeal by The Associated Press shows that a former top House Republican wired $3,000 to an extortionist in the Philippines before alerting police in July.

Ex-Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove acknowledged in September that he had an “inappropriate” Skype video conversation with a woman who contacted him on Facebook.

The conversation’s content remains secret but Downers Grove police revealed Thursday that Sandack answered extortion demands of $1,000, then $2,000 over the next two days. He alerted police after receiving a $5,000 demand.

Police disclosed the information after the state attorney general agreed with appeals from The AP and other news media that more of the still-heavily redacted report should be disclosed under the Freedom of Information Act. Sandack resigned in July. He did not comment Thursday.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Gunman kills officer, self; as hypocrites or worse for not accepting defeat in a democratwoman dead after fight CANONSBURG, Pa. – A gunman with a history of domestic abuse fatally shot a police officer and wounded another Thursday before he and a woman were found dead after a fight at their apartment, authorities said.

Officer Scott Bashioum and the other officer were responding separately to an emergency call from neighbors about 3:15 a.m. when they were “ambushed upon their arrival” and immediately shot, state police Trooper Melinda Bondarenka said. The officers had arrived almost simultaneously, although authorities said other details of the initial confrontation were unclear.

Bashioum, a father of four, died less than an hour later at a hospital, a coroner said. The 52-year-old had been on the police force for seven years.

The wounded officer, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in Pittsburgh in stable condition after surgery.

Anti-Trump protests continue around U.S.

High-spirited high school students marched through San Francisco’s downtown, chanting “not my president” and holding signs urging a Donald Trump eviction. They waved rainbow banners and Mexican flags, as bystanders in the heavily Democratic city high-fived the marchers from the sidelines.

In New York City, about a hundred protesters gathered at Union Square in Manhattan to protest a Trump presidency.

They held signs that read “Divided States of America” and “Not My President” and “Let the New Generation Speak!!”

Defense open to settlement in Trump University suit SAN DIEGO – Donald Trump’s attorney told a federal judge Thursday he’s open to settlement talks in a class-action fraud lawsuit involving the president-elect and his now-defunct Trump University.

Attorney Daniel Petrocelli also asked during a hearing that the trial be delayed until early next year because Trump needs time to work on the transition to the presidency. The lawsuit alleging Trump University failed on its promise to teach success in real estate is currently set to begin Nov. 28 in San Diego.

President-elect Trump tours nation’s capital

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President-elect Donald Trump took a triumphant tour of the nation’s capital Thursday, holding a cordial White House meeting with President Barack Obama, sketching out priorities with Republican congressional leaders and taking in the majestic view from where he’ll be sworn in to office.

Trump’s meeting with Obama spanned 90 minutes, longer than originally scheduled. Obama said he was “encouraged” by Trump’s willingness to work with his team during the transition of power, and the Republican called the president a “very good man.”

“I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including his counsel,” Trump said from the Oval Office. He’ll begin occupying the office Jan. 20.

While Trump noted that he and Obama had never met before, their political histories will forever be linked. Trump spent years perpetrating the lie that Obama was born outside the United States. The president campaigned aggressively against Trump during the 2016 campaign, warning that his election would put the republic at risk.

But at least publicly, the two men appeared to put aside their animosity. As the meeting concluded and journalists scrambled out of the Oval Office, Obama smiled at his successor and explained the unfolding scene.

“We now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed the country succeeds,” Obama said.

Kentucky to discuss the GOP legislative agenda. Ryan, who holds the most powerful post in Congress, was a sometime critic of Trump and never campaigned with the nominee.

Emerging from the meetings, Trump sketched out priorities for his presidency.

“We’re going to move very strongly on immigration,” he said. “We will move very strongly on health care. And we’re looking at jobs. Big league jobs.”

Ryan took Trump on a tour of the Speaker’s Balcony overlooking the National Mall, the scene of Trump’s upcoming inauguration. The view, Trump said, was “really, really beautiful.”

Trump also was beginning the process of putting together his White House team. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who worked his way into Trump’s inner circle during the election, and top campaign official Kellyanne Conway were emerging as possible picks for White House chief of staff, according to two people familiar with the transition planning.

A third person said conservative media executive Steve Bannon was also in the mix, though others insisted Bannon would not have a White House

role. Those involved in the process insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the planning publicly. A decision on chief of staff is expected in the coming days.

First lady Michelle Obama met privately in the White House residence with Trump’s wife, Melania, while Vice President Joe Biden saw Vice President-elect Mike Pence late Thursday. Trump’s team was said to be sketching a robust role for Pence, an experienced Washington hand, that would include both domestic and foreign policy responsibilities.

Obama and Trump met alone, with no staff present, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters after the discussion.

“The two men did not relitigate their differences in the Oval Office,” Earnest said.

“We’re onto the next phase.”

Trump traveled to Washington from New York on his private jet, breaking with protocol by not bringing journalists in his motorcade or on his plane to document his historic visit to the White House.

Trump was harshly critical of the media during his campaign and for a time banned news organizations whose coverage he disliked from his events.

Thank vets year-round President Barack Obama called President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday to congratulate him on his election victory and to begin preparing for a peaceful transfer of power.

It is an American political tradition and ritual that, in its own way, articulates the very foundation of our democracy – the idea that voters can change who is in power and that those who are in power will respect the will of the people.

It’s been like this since the beginning.

When George Washington chose not to seek a third term, it was a fairly unique occurrence. No one simply walked away. But America was different. We had elections.

The losers respected the outcome. The winners respected the outcome.

One of the primary reasons we’ve been able to maintain that tradition for more than two centuries is because the U.S. is home to the greatest military in the world.

Without the sacrifices made by our military veterans and active-duty armed forces, such a peaceful transfer of power might not be possible.

Today is Veterans Day, a day set aside every year to honor and thank veterans from all branches of the military.

Flags will fly. Ceremonies will be held.

Speeches will be given. Veterans will be thanked for their service.

Our veterans deserve this day and so much more for the sacrifices they made so we can continue to decide for ourselves who our leaders will be.

Sadly, we have failed our veterans in many ways. We can do better providing health care, including mental health care.

We can do better in providing transitional services and job training.

One of Trump’s campaign promises was that he would make sure the country does do a better job taking care of its veterans.

We hope he follows through on that promise, because they deserve better.

To all who serve, all who ever have served, and the hundreds of thousands who lost their lives after dedicating them to the greater good, we thank you.

Just as your example of toil and service to your country endures for months, years or even lifelong careers, please know our gratitude extends well beyond this special day.

Now comes the burden of actually governing Donald Trump was president-elect for less than a day before Republicans in Congress began gearing up to move policy in a way the country has not seen in six years. “The opportunity is to go big, to go bold, to get things done,” House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said.

The last time one party controlled Congress and the White House, President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law. This time, Obamacare is on the chopping block. Full repeal seems unlikely for a variety of practical and political reasons.

But even before the new administration and Congress set about scaling back the ACA, they must have a real replacement plan on deck.

That will be tricky. Republicans must explain whether their replacement plan would cover as many Americans as the law covers now. If it would not, they must explain why this result would be better for people. They also must think about how to guarantee

coverage to people with pre-existing conditions – one of the most popular parts of the current law – while abolishing the law’s “individual mandate” requiring Americans to carry health insurance.

Without the mandate, Americans would simply sign up for coverage when they were sick, and insurance-company costs would spiral out of control. As these details are worked out, Obamacare will continue to operate, but the uncertainty about the law’s future and a hostile new administration may cause chaos in already shaky ACA marketplaces.

Similarly, Trump has frequently emphasized rolling back the country’s climate change policies, including tearing up the recently struck Paris climate agreement and undercutting a variety of clean-air regulations, such as the Clean Power Plan, the centerpiece of Obama’s climate program. Trump may well get an assist from Congress, which could conceivably eliminate any statutory authority the Environmental

Protection Agency has to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions.

Yet, once again, Trump and Republicans would have the obligation of mapping out their alternative policies. Given scientists’ warnings about climate change – and the effects they are pointing to right now – “nothing” cannot be the policy. Republicans also will have to explain how they will assure Americans who want – deserve – clean air and water that their government will act to prevent dangerous pollution, before Trump engages in broad regulatory rollback.

Then there is Trump’s promise to bring back manufacturing jobs.

Because so many of them were lost to automation, not trade, this goal will be far more difficult than Trump has suggested, particularly for low-skilled workers.

In other words, Trump, the speaker and other Republicans in Congress might soon find that making promises is much easier than actually governing.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

of civil rights, marriage equality or President Barack Obama. For starters. Had the women generations before me given up, I would not have the right to vote.

Every morning, we are faced with a decision before our feet hit the floor. Will we join the defeated, the ones who finally caved? Or will we continue to fight? I know from long experience which answer will rouse us from our beds with our character intact.

First, however, we acknowledge our sadness and disbelief, lest that darkness feast on us. As for grief, well, there’s a stubborn monster.

The longer we ignore it the harder it pounds on the door. Only after we let it in do we discover its temporary hold.

So, let’s get on with it. Let’s invite our grief to sit with us until we get bored with each other – and then watch that monster march out the door.

Trump is the change voters say they wanted

Many liberals are telling themselves a story about Donald Trump’s victory that is depressing, frightening, self-congratulatory and not entirely true: that it represents the voters’ endorsement of racism, misogyny, ignorance and generally being a jerk.

Trump may indeed represent those things. But he didn’t win the presidency because American voters were ratifying his worst elements.

As Amy Walter of Cook Political Report observed, “Voters did not like Trump, but voted for him anyway:” • 60 percent of voters viewed him unfavorably, yet he got 15 percent of those voters to vote for him.

• 63 percent of voters said they didn’t think he had the “temperament” to be president, he got 20 percent of those voters to support him.

• 60 percent of voters said they didn’t think he was qualified to be

president and yet 18 percent gave him their vote.

He also pulled 29 percent of the voters who said his treatment of women bothered them.

People voted for Trump for all kinds of reasons.

Many wanted to elect someone from outside the system and were voting for change in much the same way President Barack Obama’s voters were in 2008. (In fact, many of Trump’s crucial working-class white voters had also voted for Obama, which undermines the racism explanation.) When exit polls asked what quality in a candidate matters most, a plurality of voters, 39 percent, said “can bring change.” Trump captured 83 percent of those votes.

Some voters were upset that their health insurance premiums are skyrocketing, and they believed he could do something about that. As a friend of mine wrote on Facebook, “I didn’t get as many fliers this year from campaigns on issues or on behalf of

candidates, but did get something from Blue Shield last week. As I opened it up, I quipped to myself that this was campaign material from the RNC. How many other Americans got similar mailings and felt similar outrage, but decided to vent it against the party in power?”

Others think that Trump can cut through various kinds of red tape and allow the public and private sectors to “get things done,” especially by improving roads, airports and other infrastructure.

He likes to portray himself as a builder, and many people – including his high-profile Silicon Valley supporter Peter Thiel – are drawn to that image.

Many Trump voters were simply people who tend to vote Republican.

Hillary Clinton offered them no reason to switch allegiances. When Election Day arrived, they did what they usually do.

I don’t like Trump, but I know enough of his voters, and have read

enough about others, to know that very few were embracing the whole package. Trump’s coalition certainly includes an element who are tired of being told that they’re worthless and awful – Won’t it be great when stupid white men are put in their place! – and are punching back, sometimes in deplorable ways. For them, voting for Trump is a way of combating political correctness. But it’s also a positive vote for someone they believe is proud of them and proud of their country.

Liberals want to turn Trump’s victory into an endorsement of racism and misogyny. That’s a dumb strategy if you’re against those things. The liberal belief that half the country is made up of horrible people is a big reason Trump got elected, and the more Democrats keep repeating it, the more likely their worst fears are to come true.

Don’t ask us to congratulate him.

Not today. Not this week. Not ever, probably.

He stands for so much of what we’d dared to hope was behind us as a country. Bigotry, misogyny, xenophobia. He spewed it with reckless abandon, and now he is going to be our next president.

Of course we are distancing ourselves. We love our families, our communities and our country. Our commitment is not a charade. And we want to live with ourselves.

This is not a sporting event. This is not about good manners. Sometimes there is no deliverance in the fake smile, the phony congratulations.

This would be one of those times.

We are exhausted but wide-awake aware. We have no choice, because we are his targets – a diverse group, which, in his view, qualifies us as the collective enemy.

We are women. We are immigrants. We are black and Latino. We are Muslims and Jews. We are gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender. We are the people on the margins, the ones invisible in plain

Rain forest coming to Sycamore DAILY CHRONICLE SYCAMORE – On Wednesday, the Sycamore High School auditorium will be transformed into a tropical rain forest.

The show, “Live on Stage, The Rainforest,” will make attendees feel like they are in the middle of the tropical rain forest with the sounds and sights of the Amazon region. Audience members will see exotic birds, kinkajous, monkeys and snakes.

The show started as a dream for founder and director Mike Kohlrieser. In the 1980s, Mike and his wife

Marcia became increasingly aware of problems in the tropical rain forests.

Using his already developed skills as an animal trainer and stage entertainer, Mike wanted to educate young and old alike about these animals facing possible extinction.

In 1992, the nonprofit organization Understanding Wildlife Inc. was created.

The goal is to educate and inspire individuals to get involved and make this a better world.

Show times are 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $5 a person and will be available at the door.

‘Crazy for Patsy’ Saturday at SUMC DAILY CHRONICLE Jill Sanderson has been in love with Patsy Cline’s music since she was a girl. Now, she and her husband, Fareed Haque, and their band get to delight many communities in the area with their “Crazy for Patsy” tribute.

Bev Rauch, music Jill director at Sycamore Sanderson United Methodist Church, saw the first Patsy Cline tribute concert a few years ago at a fundraiser for a girl’s school in Africa that Sanderson helps with. She scheduled the group to come to SUMC a year later, but because Sanderson became ill, the concert

morphed into a classical guitar and flute concert. Haque is a professor of guitar at Northern Illinois University, and is excellent in many styles of guitar. He was voted world’s best guitarist in 2009 by Guitar Player magazine.

The Patsy Cline tribute has finally been rescheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., and it has been widely anticipated. The band also includes Dave “DK” Kolars, founder of the Northern Illinois Bluegrass Association, on lap steel guitar, Johnny Gifford on drums, and a bass player.

Mental health workshop at Hillcrest Covenant

Hillcrest Covenant Church in DeKalb will host a mental health workshop at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19. “Let’s talk about it” will be the theme for the morning.

Those struggling with issues relating to mental health and the effect it can have on individuals, as well as families, especially during the holiday season, are invited to an informal and informational seminar.

Shabbona church plans 123rd turkey dinner, bazaar

The Shabbona United Church of Christ’s 123rd annual dinner and country bazaar will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

In 1893, the church’s predecessor, the Shabbona Congregational Church, hosted a 25-cent chicken dinner and 15-cent chicken supper the Thursday before Thanksgiving. A few years later, the menu changed to turkey, and the event has continued every year since.

Generations of families have been a part of this historical event in the life of this church.

The bazaar will begin at 3 p.m. and feature homemade baked goods and crafts.

It’s a great time to stock up on holiday goods for the freezer.

New this year will be the buffet-style dinner that will feature the same roasted turkey, homemade stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, candied carrots, cranberry sauce, rolls and homemade dessert. The buffet will be offered in the church dining room from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Ticket donations cost $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 5 to 10 and free for children 4 and younger. Generous size carry-outs cost $12 and can be picked up between 4 and 6 p.m. There are no advance ticket sales.

The 37th annual “Christmas in the Country” Arts, Crafts and Bake Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

This show will be at Sandwich High School, Lynn G. Haskin Grade School and Sandwich Middle School. Haskin Grade School is at 720 S. Wells St. and is between the other two schools. There will be a shuttle bus service for easy access to all three buildings.

See crafts such as pop can jewelry, needle felting, American Girl clothing, ceramics, spoon jewelry, painted glass, dog treats, holiday decorations, edible creations and much more. There will be 150 crafters.

Admission is $3 (proceeds benefit the Sandwich School Music Association) and your stamped hand will allow you into each building.

No strollers and no smoking will be allowed in any building. Lunch will be available in the high school and middle school and the instant door prize drawing will take place in the middle school again this year.

The DeKalb Public Library, in conjunction with Northern Illinois University, will host “Fiction to Action: Ideas for Tackling Tough Topics and Empowering Readers” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.

This program is intended for educators and librarians and will be held in the lower level Yusunas Meeting Room.

The audience will participate in lively discussions and hands-on activities and come away with free tools and resources authors use to empower their readers.

Mike Mullin, author of the “Ashfall” series, will speak about how censorship hurts kids. Every library and school serves kids who desperately need books that are frequently challenged or banned. The audience will come out of this talk with a better understanding of why fighting book challenges is so critically important to those whose voices are often least heard: children.

This part of the program will Include a role-playing game, interpretive dance, and book discussions, drawing from Mullin’s personal library of hundreds of challenged books.

Next, Gillian King-Cargile, director

of NIU STEM Read, will give a speech titled “From Sci-Fi Stories to Real-Life Glory.” Fictional characters often deal with the same issues as students. STEM Read selections can launch explorations into sensitive topics like bullying, classism, gender discrimination, sexuality, mental health and mortality. The audience will learn how STEM Read designs project-based activities to educate and empower students to take action.

Finally, Kristin Brynteson, director of professional development at the NIU P-20 Center, will give a speech titled “Advocacy through Digital Storytelling.” When it comes to tough topics, students have opinions and voices.

Teachers will learn how to arm their students with the knowledge and technology they need to become advocates for change. The audience is encouraged to tell their own digital stories.

The Skyhawks can pass, too. Second-year starter Riley Buchanan has completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 1,435 yards and 16 touchdowns while throwing six interceptions. Nico LoDolce is his top target with 50 catches, 809 yards and 10 scores.

“We’re pretty balanced depending on what teams want to do,” DeBoeuf

said. “We’re in a similar situation almost every week, and it happened last week, where teams try to take Alex away. We were still able to run the ball efficiently and throw the ball efficiently. We have the same kid as last year at quarterback, and pretty much the same receiving corps as last year, so everyone has experience.

The offense will take what the defense gives. Plus, even if teams try to take away Alex, we still fell good about his chances.”

Bill McCarty said his Cogs (11-0) just need to tackle Peete better – adding that it’s easier said than done.

“We have to do whatever we’re able to do,” Bill McCarty said. “We have to tackle him – and he’s hard to tackle. We didn’t tackle him last year and he rushed for over 300 yards.

GENOA – Johnsburg coach Dan DeBouef has said he’s seen teams try a lot of strategies to stop senior running back Alex Peete, who has rushed for more than 5,000 yards in his high school career.

The players on the Genoa-Kingston football team said they mainly need to change one thing against Peete, who rushed for 341 yards when the teams met last year – tackle better.

The No. 3 Cogs will visit No. 2 Johnsburg in a Class 4A quarterfinal in a clash of undefeated teams and a rematch of former Big Northern Conference foes. The Skyhawks won, 44-20, on their home field in 2015, going on to finish the year 8-3 and losing to eventual state champion Phillips. G-K lost to the Wildcats in the first round of last year’s playoffs.

No. 4 Phillips (10-1) or No. 1 Herscher (11-0) will take on the winner in a semifinal next week.

“We have to tackle, that’s the main thing we have to do,” said G-K defensive end Trey McCarty, who had five sacks last week in the Cogs’ 34-25 win against Rockford Lutheran in the second round. “We have to wrap up and bring him to the ground, then make them run another play.”

Since a 32-point performance in the opener, the Skyhawks (11-0) have scored at least 46 points in every game this year and are averaging 49 a game.

Peete has rushed for 2,077 yards with 34 touchdowns and is averaging 8.9 yards a carry.

“He’s a very good player,” Cogs coach Bill McCarty said. “He has, what, 5,000 yards as a three-year start-

teams.”

The Cogs are led on offense by running backs Aidan Simmons (164-98915) and Dan Guardi (105-899-9). Zach Butler has 1,080 passing yards and 11 touchdowns and hadn’t thrown an interception until the second quarter last week against the Crusaders.

Butler threw for 160 yards last week, and Zach Miller – who has 636 receiving yards and seven scores this year – threw a 69-yard touchdown pass on a trick play.

“Even though they like to run the ball in the power run game, they’re kind of based on big plays,” DeBoeuf said. “It won them the Lutheran game, and they also had some big plays against Coal City in the first-round game, as well. If we limit those, it will be big.”

Defensively, the Skyhawks are giving up only 9.1 points a game. After a 46-21 Week 2 win against Rochelle, they shutout the next four teams they faced – including two playoff teams – held Woodstock to a touchdown, shut out Harvard and held Marengo to a field goal. They have given up 49 points in their two playoff games after surrendering 51 in the regular season.

The Skyhawks are in the quarterfinals for the second time in school history, last making it this far in 2009. Genoa-Kingston has been this deep three times before this year – last getting this far in 1988, when the Cogs made the semifinals.

The 11 wins this year set a program record for Johnsburg, while the Cogs did go 13-0 in winning a state title in 1977.

Genoa-Kingston linebacker Brandon Mangum said the Cogs are maintaining their focus.

“It’s tougher because you’re facing tougher teams now,” Mangum said.

“It’s just pressure put on your shoulders because you’re asked to perform for your town and your school, but it’s just really cool. It’s making history.”

Expectations high for Huskies

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In senior guard Aaric Armstead’s first two seasons with the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team, the Huskies hovered in mediocrity.

However, the Huskies are coming off their best season in two decades and face some buzz – and expectations – around the program from fans as NIU tips off the season against Indiana State at 7 p.m. today at home.

“It feels different because I came here when we were below .500, so that’s the thing,” said Armstead, who averaged 10.9 points and 5.7 rebounds a game last season. “Having one of the best seasons NIU’s had, there’s the sense that you have to do it again. You have to prove yourself. You have to do it when everybody’s expecting it now.

“It’s easy to find the motivation when you’re an underdog, but once you start to get a little respect, what are you going to do then? That’s where our team is at. We have a little bit of respect, so what are we going to do with it now?”

After finishing two games under .500 in back-to-back seasons, the Huskies went 2113 last season to earn a trip to the inaugural eight-team Vegas 16 – their first postseason appearance since 1995-96. Although the Huskies piled up wins on the season, they still finished 9-9 in the Mid-American Conference.

The MAC West was so tight last season, they were one win away from being tied for first place and two losses away from being tied for last. In conference play, the Huskies averaged 71.1 points a game and allowed 71.2.

Featuring a team that had four freshmen averaging at least 16 minutes a game, the Huskies were dominant at home – 18-1, with the lone loss coming against Buffalo – but went 3-10 on the road, including 1-8 in conference play.

NIU coach Mark Montgomery said those freshmen-turned-sophomores – guards Marshawn Wilson (10.9 points a game) and Laytwan Porter (4.9) and posts Levi Bradley (6.7) and Jaylen Key (5.6) – are veterans now that they have a full season under their belts. Joining those underclassmen are likely the heart of the team this season in Armstead and senior Marin Maric, who led the team with 11.9 points a game and 8.4 rebounds a game.

The Huskies got some bad breaks before the season started, with backup center Andrew Zelis suffering a season-ending knee injury in the first practice of the year and freshman post Noah McCarty spraining his neck while taking a charge, which could put pressure on Maric to stay out of foul trouble.

“He has to defend without fouling now, but he’s focused,” Montgomery said of Maric. “He’s a senior. He’s not patting him-

Montgomery added that Armstead, who had an up-and-down 2015-16 season offensively, will need to be more consistent and will be a major scoring option for the Huskies – to go along with his stellar defense on the perimeter.

The Huskies lost a pair of critical seniors from last season in the versatile wing Chuks Iroegbu and point guard Travon Baker, who averaged 11 points a game and frequently came up with important baskets when NIU needed it. Guard Michael Orris transferred to South Dakota State, and wing Darrell Bowie left to play for Iowa State.

However, NIU, which was predicted to finish third in the MAC West and got five first-place votes, returns senior guard Dontel Highsmith, who missed the past two seasons with an ACL injury after averaging 10.5 points a game in the first half of his freshman season.

The Huskies also bring in highly touted freshman guard Eugene German, who led Indiana in scoring his junior and senior seasons at 21st Century Charter in Gary.

By the time the Huskies started their conference play last season, they were 11-2 – which were more wins than they had combined in the first two seasons under Montgomery from 2011 to 2013. They are coming off a 20-plus win season with plenty of hope from the fan base, but Armstead sees the Sam Buckner for Shaw Media ceiling even higher.

Huskies defense. They scored 28 of their 31 points – and had 272 of their 420 yards – in the second half. The Rockets had four touchdowns in six possessions in the second half, while the Huskies only had one in seven drives.

“They just ran their scheme and they ran it really good,” NIU senior defensive end Ladell Fleming said. “They made plays on offense, and we just had to stop their big plays from happening.”

Now the Huskies (5-7, 3-3 MAC West) have two games remaining – at Eastern Michigan and at Kent State – without the hope of a bowl game on the table. Carey has said on multiple occasions this season that the players haven’t flinched despite the less-than-rosy record, however.

They’ve struggled to win close games in 2016. During the 2014 season, the Huskies were 8-0 in games that were within one possession or less in the fourth quarter. They went 4-3 in such games last year, and this season, they’re 1-6.

“I told them in the locker room that I was extremely proud of them,” Carey said about the Huskies after the loss Wednesday. “I think they played extremely hard tonight. ... That’s one thing that I give the leadership of this team a ton of credit, they have not flinched and they’ve been getting better and better. There’s some big-picture things out there, but they’ve done a great job of blocking that out and just going to work.”

CHICAGO – Northern Illinois’ Sean Folliard came in like a missile.

In the closing minutes of a tied game, the senior linebacker delivered a hit to Toledo running back Kareem Hunt short of a first down, but Folliard’s high tackle wasn’t enough to bring him down. Hunt spun out of the would-be tackle and turned what would have been a fourth-and-4 into a first down.

Four plays later, Hunt scored a touchdown that ended NIU’s streak of eight consecutive bowl games.

In a season full of missed opportunities for the Huskies, Hunt escaping Folliard’s tackle was the latest as the Rockets snapped a six-game losing streak to NIU with a 31-24 victory Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.

“It is always a four-quarter game with them,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “They made one more play than us, and it wasn’t necessarily the end of game. It could have been the first, second or third quarter. We just didn’t make that play.”

After the Huskies tied it at 24 on a 22-yard field goal by Christian Hagan with 4:31 remaining, the Rockets (8-2 overall, 5-1 MAC West) faced a thirdand-6 from their own 44. After a timeout, Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside found Hunt with a pass in the right flat and Folliard’s initial impact came at the 46 – 4 yards short of a first down.

However, Hunt escaped and earned a first down with a 9-yard gain.

“The play that sticks out to me is the third down when he was stopped around midfield and the ball is caught in the flat and he breaks a tackle and gets the first down,” Toledo first-year coach Jason Candle said. “That right there, that’s a sign of a true senior and a guy who put his heart and soul on the line for this football team. These seniors have heard for four years that they can’t beat Northern Illinois, and ‘You haven’t done it’ and ‘When are you going to do it?’ ” Two plays later, Woodside connected with Jon’Vea Johnson for a 39-yard gain against NIU cornerback Mayomi Olootu to put it on the 6-yard line.

After Hunt ran it down to the 1, he leapt into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown with 1:15 remaining – finishing his day with 122 rushing yards and six catches for 37 yards.

For the Rockets’ offense, it was a night-and-day difference in the second half compared to the first against the

Offense has chance to feast in red zone against Bucs

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – During the bye, a focal point of the Bears’ self scouting was the red-zone offense, where the team ranks 23rd in the league, scoring touchdowns on 47.8 percent of drives inside their opponents’ 20-yard line.

Sunday is a golden opportunity to start fixing that, taking advantage of the bye week and the opponent.

The Buccaneers have the 28thranked red-zone defense, giving up touchdowns on 65.5 percent of drives.

Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains discussed how the Bears used the bye to improve the red-zone performance.

“Practice, No. 1. But you go back through and study what the teams around the league are doing, if there’s any trends that are going on and if there are trends, does it fit you?” he said. “Is there a play here or there you can steal? Really, you look hard at yourself, what you’ve been doing, why things haven’t worked, why things have worked. So it’s a good opportunity to get better that way.”

In last season’s win over the Bucs, the Bears were only 2 for 4 getting TDs in the red zone.

Talent in Bucs’ secondary: Tampa Bay’s pass defense doesn’t rank high, but it does feature a veteran in cornerback Brent Grimes, who has 12 passes defensed this season, and first-round pick Vernon Hargreaves, who has five.

“Grimes, he’s a veteran. He’s been around the game, studied a lot of film, so he knows Dowell what’s going on,” Bears Loggains receiver Alshon Jeffery said. “[Hargreaves], he’s a first-round pick. He’s got some talent out there.

At the same time, we’re going to try to take advantage of whatever they give us or show us.”

Quarterback Jay Cutler said that even though Hargreaves’ size (5-foot-10) “limits him a little bit,” the Bucs’ rookie “fights hard, has good quickness and he’s good on press or bail. He’s going to be a good matchup for our guys.”

Cutler was efficient against the

Bucs last season, completing 20 of 27 passes (74.1 percent), but only for 156 yards and 5.8 yards an attempt.

Preparing for McCoy: More fortuitous timing for the Bears – getting Pro Bowl guards Kyle Long and Josh Sitton back when Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is on the other side.

McCoy has four sacks, three tackles for loss, six QB hits, three passes defensed and two forced fumbles this season, and he’ll have the attention of Cutler on Sunday.

“You’ve got to know where he’s at,” Cutler said.

“You’ve got to try to get four hands on him as much as possible. You look at a lot of the pressures and they’re coming from the edge, guys are getting home from the edge. I think most teams are kind of worried about the interior and they’re trying to slide to him or get four hands on him somehow some way and the pressure’s coming from the edges.”

Injury update: Long and Sitton were full participants in practice, along with Ka’Deem Carey, who missed Wednesday’s session with an illness.

Cutler likes result: Cutler was

pleased with the outcome of this week’s presidential election, he said after practice.

“I’m happy with the results,” he said. “I’ve supported [Donald] Trump for a while. I’m not going to dive into it, I know it’s a sensitive issue, but I like where it’s going.”

Cutler is one of the more notable NFL players to publicly voice support for the president-elect. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who has discussed his friendship with Trump in the past and has had Trump’s hat in his locker, did not discuss the election this week with reporters in New England.

Other players in the Bears’ locker room discussed the election.

“With our system that’s in place, I think, and I’m hoping, that checks and balances and everything will work out the way it was drawn out to do,” guard Kyle Long said. “Hopefully we can just kind of get together. That’s the big thing. Love one another.”

Inside linebacker Jerrell Freeman said, “Whoever is in that office, we’ve got to hope that they do great because they’re representing everybody here.”

MIAMI – For 13 years, Dwyane Wade made plenty of what the Miami Heat call “winning plays.”

He made another one Thursday.

And the Heat didn’t enjoy this one.

Wade turned a debated foul call into two big free throws with 13.7 seconds remaining, helping the Bulls hang on for a 98-95 win and ensuring that his return to the arena he called home for 13 seasons would be a winning one.

It was Wade’s first time facing the Heat as an opponent, and afterward he seemed more than a little relieved that this was over.

“I can only imagine what he was going through today,” Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said. “A lot of emotions coming back here.”

The Bulls were up 94-92 when Wade got the call that went against Miami’s Justise Winslow, a foul along the sideline on an inbounds pass where it appeared that the 12-time All-Star might have embellished a bit for effect.

If he did, it worked.

“If it was last year, he got pushed out of bounds,” a smiling Heat coach

“I got the vet call,” Wade said.

Said Winslow: “I didn’t agree with the call. I think that was because of the stage, because of him being back here. I don’t think if he was at another venue, another regular game, they would have made that call.”

Robin Lopez had 16 points for the Bulls, who prevailed in a game that had 14 ties and 19 lead changes. Doug McDermott scored 13 for the Bulls, and Nikola Mirotic added 10.

Hassan Whiteside led Miami with 20 points and 20 rebounds. Dion Waiters and Josh Richardson each scored 16 for the Heat, who lost point guard Goran Dragic to a sprained left ankle in the third quarter.

24 Travel rarely a problem during pregnancy Note to readers: This column originally ran in November 2014.

Dear Dr. K: My job requires a lot of trav-

el, and I recently became pregnant with my first child. What do I need to know about traveling safely during pregnancy?

Dear Reader: Being pregnant doesn’t mean you have to stay at home for nine months. There are exceptions; particularly in the last three months, some women develop complications of pregnancy that require them to be resting. But for most women, travel poses no threat to the mother or child.

But traveling by car, train or airplane can be less comfortable when you’re pregnant, so you should take a few precautions to travel comfortably and safely.

First, check with your obstetrical care provider to find out when he or she considers it safe for you to travel. As I’m sure you know, pregnancy typically is divided into three trimesters, with each trimester a three-month period. Travel generally is considered safe during the first and second trimesters. In terms of comfort, the best time to travel is after your fourth month (when morning sickness is gone) and before your third trimester. But if you’re traveling for work, you might not have that much control over your travel schedule.

I do think it’s wise to avoid traveling long distances in the last month before your due date, as due dates can be uncertain and babies can come early. Ask your doctor if he or she recommends you limit long-distance travel even earlier. Airlines also have their own rules. Most airlines prohibit international travel after 32 weeks of pregnancy and domestic travel after 34 to 36 weeks.

What about airport scanners? You don’t need to worry about them, either.

Let me put it in context. We all constantly are exposed to a low level of radiation from the sun. You would have to go through 25,000 airport scanners to be exposed to the amount of radiation you naturally are exposed to in a year.

While the airport scanner doesn’t pose a risk, the airplane does. Once on the plane, don’t sit for more than one hour at a time if you can avoid it. Walk around and stretch your legs frequently to reduce leg cramps. If you must stay in your seat, move your arms and legs to improve blood flow and prevent blood clots from forming. (The same advice applies if you are driving: Take breaks every hour for a short walk.) And always wear a seat belt on an airplane, even if the captain has turned off the seat belt sign.

Finally, drink at least six to eight glasses of water each day. This will keep you from getting dehydrated and also will prevent you from retaining water. Carry a water bottle with you in the car or on the plane and drink from it frequently.

If you take simple precautions, you can have the benefits of traveling throughout most of your pregnancy.

am a 46-year-old drug user. I have been addicted for more than 20 years. I know it’s wrong. I know I can be a better person. I got hooked when a supposed friend introduced me to crack in 1992. If I only could go back to that day, I’d kick the you-know-what out of him. I was all set to make something of my life.

In 2010, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. It only got worse. I have hurt the people I care about the most. I have stolen from my mom. I have written checks on her bank account and pawned her jewelry. I don’t know what to do.

I know I’m depressed since Dad died. I’m also disabled and on disability. I pretty much kept everything in check until 2001 when I lost the job I’d held for 17 years. I have drifted from job to job ever since.

So there it is. I have developed COPD. I’m on oxygen full time and can’t work. I ask myself why I’m suddenly doing three and four times more than I’ve ever done. Do you think I’m that depressed? That I’m trying to speed my own death? I’m at a loss and need some guidance. I contemplate suicide daily, but I guess I’m too much of a coward. Can you help me? – End Of
