What to tax next? How about pot POLL So the election is over and now our state’s lawmakers presumably will set to figuring out what to do about Illinois’ sorry financial state.

In case you’d forgotten, Illinois is operating under a “stopgap” budget that expires at the end of the year. There’s a budget shortfall of almost $8 billion and it seems there’s almost certainly going to be an income tax hike, along with who knows what other new fees and budget cuts.

A suggestion sure to be ignored: Let’s legalize marijuana and tax that, rather than keeping a thriving black market with a random tax on whoever is caught with pot.

After Tuesday’s voting, marijuana is or will be legal in eight states with more than 20 percent of the country’s population, including the entire West Coast.

Here, we’re still taking baby steps. In July, Illinois lawmakers approved and Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a new law that made possession of 10 grams of marijuana or less a civil rather than a criminal offense. The new law set a legal standard for THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, for driving (previously there was zero tolerance.)

The law set the fine for possession at $200 (at the request of Rauner, who objected to an earlier proposal of $125), but it also gave individual communities the power to set fines wherever they pleased.

So in DeKalb, you can be fined $350 if caught with a small amount of pot, unless you want your day in court, in which case the fine would be $750 if you’re found guilty.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office proposes a local fine in line with the state’s $200, but will also tow your vehicle if the marijuana is found during a traffic stop – and that will cost another $300, plus, now you’ve got no wheels.

In Crystal Lake, they’ll fine you $300 to $500 for a first offense, and then $600 to $1,000 for a second, and $1,000 to $2,000 for a third.

But none of them will have their officers take pot smokers to jail. (Some people probably would be better able to spend a night in jail than pay a $2,000 fine, but I digress.)

Yes, there’s an easy way to avoid getting sucked into this arbitrary system – don’t smoke marijuana, or at least don’t get caught with it.

But this is a substance clearly headed for legalization. Our state’s voters are owed at least an advisory referendum, or better yet, representatives acting on their behalf to end the prohibition at a future date.

Marijuana taxes wouldn’t solve a multibillion budget problem, but the millions they could generate would be money that we wouldn’t pay through other taxes on our property, vehicles and purchases.

It also could create a new cash crop for farmers and new opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Legalization is the fairer way to do this – it would make more people who use marijuana pay for the burden that the substance places on society, rather assessing steep fees on the random people who get caught.

Illinois is in a dire financial situation, and this is a social change whose time has come.

BRIEF St. Mary School event to honor veterans

St. Mary School in DeKalb will host “We Salute You: WWII and Korean War Veterans,” a Guardian Angel program fundraiser, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the school at 210 Gurler Road.

The evening will feature a presentations by St. Mary students, a Wall of Honor of World War II and Korean War veterans, a “Then and Now” drone presentation, live performance by Jazz in Progress and appetizers.

Dinner, provided by Fatty’s Pub & Grille, will be served at 6:30 p.m. There will be a cash bar and 50/50 raffle

with 10 percent of the proceeds benefit Honor Flight.

The Guardian Angel program provides school tuition assistance to families in need.

Dinner tickets cost $30 and raffle tickets cost $5 each or five for $20. Tickets are available at the St. Mary Parish Office, St. Mary School, Lehan Drug or Barb City Manor.

‘It’s been a bad day,’ Democratic Party chairman says

By BRETT ROWLAND browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Dennis Sands was an early backer of Donald Trump who was drawn to his anti-establishment message.

Sands traveled in July to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland as a delegate for him. He said he and his wife, Kathy, left the convention knowing they had been part of history.

Sands, of Shabbona, said Wednesday that he believed leading up to Tuesday’s election that Trump would win despite polls showing him trailing because of the silent support he had.

He said he felt confident that Trump’s business mindset would help move America in the right direction.

“It’s going to be a change in attitude,” Sands said. “The attitude is, ‘Let’s get things done, and if we’ve got to make a left turn on something let’s make a left turn on something, but let’s just get it done.’ Nowadays politicians just aren’t willing to do that.” “… I love that phrase, ‘Drain the swamp.’ I think that’s what got him elected, I think that’s what put him over the top because that hit it right on the head, let’s drain the swamp and get things done.”

He added that the movement that elected Trump began with the tea party and other groups who had grown dissatisfied with the political elites in Washington.

“This movement just didn’t start this year with Trump,” Sands said.

“This movement’s been going on 10 to 12 years, if not longer.”

Sands and other local Republicans were jubilant after Trump’s victory, while those who supported his opponents ranged from apprehensive to downright sad.

Most of the Trump yard signs were gone Wednesday morning when DeKalb County Republican Chairman Steve Kuhn went out to pick them up.

A half dozen or more people showed up at the local Republican Party headquarters the day after the election to pick up any remaining signs and banners. Many simply wanted a piece of political history, Kuhn said. The mood was positive.

“We’re all smiling,” he said.

In DeKalb County, Republicans were in the minority. Hillary Clinton won the county with 20,348 votes or 46.88 percent of the total. Trump got 19,051 votes, or 43.89 percent of the county’s total. Libertarian candidate Johnson managed to get 2,463 votes, or 5.67 percent. Write-in candidates got more votes (803) than Green Party candidate Jill Stein (743), according to

By STEPHANIE MARKHAM DeKALB – Late voter registrations and technical issues at the polls caused reporting delays for a few DeKalb County precincts before all 65 were accounted for about midnight Tuesday.

DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson’s office received all precincts’ reports by 11:45 p.m. and last updated the numbers on its website by 12:10 a.m.

Wednesday.

The office reported that 43,784 votes were cast out of 60,511 registered DeKalb County voters, a turnout of 72.4 percent.

The percentage was slightly higher than in President Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election (71.5 percent), but lower than Obama’s first successful run for the presidency in 2008, when turnout was 74.4 percent.

Unofficial returns showed that Hillary Clinton outpolled Donald Trump in the county, with Clinton garnering 20,348 votes, or 46.9 percent to 19,051 votes, or 43.9 percent, for Trump. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson received 2,463 votes, or 5.7 percent of the total. Green Party nominee Jill Stein received 743 votes, or 1.7 percent.

There also were 803 write-ins.

Doug Johnson said people were lined up for Election Day registration late into the evening, including about 100 people who were still waiting at 7 p.m. at a polling place at Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center. ​Although polls were to close at

7 p.m., anyone who was in line by that time had to be allowed to vote, Johnson said.

“We take our time and get things done right,” he said.

This was the first election when voters could register and vote at their polling place on Election Day in DeKalb County, and the late influx of voters in some locations took more time than usual.

“It takes a lot longer than people who were ready and registered on time,” Johnson said. “But, we were very pleased with the way registrations went and how quickly they got through the line.”

Election Day registration was allowed statewide and required voters to provide two forms of identification, with one proving their current address. Grace period registration and voting began Oct. 12, and early voting was available for 40 days before the election.

In some polling places, the vote-counting machines hadn’t been turned on properly by the election judges or were malfunctioning for other reasons, which is not unusual for an election night, Johnson said. A glitch at Westminster Presbyterian Church caused an additional delay for two DeKalb precincts to report, he said.

Technicians were able to fix the machines so that all votes were counted and reported, Johnson said.

“For this election, I’m just tickled pink that everything went as smoothly as it did,” he said. “We had no issues.”

SUSAN LEE CHRISTENSEN Born: June 21, 1964 Died: November 1, 2016

Susan Lee Christensen, 52, of Cortland died on November 1, 2016 in Central DuPage Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born on June 21, 1964 in Rockford, daughter of Alvin and Margery (Meyers) Christensen.

Graduate of East High School in Rockford and Northern Illinois University. Susan was a retired air traffic controller. She was devoted to the care and rehabilitation of animals, and was a dedicated volunteer at Tails Humane Society, where she served as a board member, and at Oaken Acres Wildlife Center.

Survived by her mother, Margery Christensen and companion Charlie Wadsworth of Rockford; siblings, Karen Christensen of Sunnyvale, CA with friend Craig Hange of Mountain View, CA and, Scott (Dr. Beth) Christensen of Rockford; special friends, Kathy Stelford, Anne Spencer, Jean Curley, and Steve Nuppenau; and her cats, Owl, Jack, and Teddy.

Preceded in death by her father. Private services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Susan’s memory to a charity of your choice devoted to the care of animals.

Born: July 29, 1923 Died: November 7, 2016 Irene J. Damm, 93, of Sun City West, AZ, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2016, with no regrets after a full and contented life. Her daughters were at her side.

She was born in Chicago July 29, 1923, to William and Lillian (Dvorak) Garraughty. Irene met Robert (Bob) Damm when both were toddlers spending summers at their family cottages on Lake Wandawega in Wisconsin. Friendship turned to a deep and lasting love, and they married on April 15, 1944.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Jerry) Shanholtzer of Sun City West, AZ, and Cynthia (Jim) Hupke of DeKalb, IL, all of whom will miss her humor and sage advice.

She was a doting grandmother to Scott (Eileen) Shanholtzer of Virginia, Michelle Hupke of Illinois, Jennifer (Gordon) Murphy of Maine, and Christopher (Gretchen) Hupke of Illinois.

Irene was “Grandma D” to her great-grandchildren Tori, Matthew, Will, Lexi, Kate and Addison. Her sister, Evelyn “Pat” Hagan of Iowa also survives, as do many nieces and nephews.

SYCAMORE – A former Sycamore High School student accused of sexually assaulting four girls was sentenced to probation Wednesday in DeKalb County court and will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Cody P. Lynch, a 19-year-old jailed since his arrest 414 days ago in May 2015, pleaded guilty in August to a single count of aggravated Cody criminal sexual abuse Lynch of a girl who was 13 when the crime occurred in April 2015.

During a sentencing hearing that concluded Wednesday, prosecutors linked Lynch to three other sexual assaults involving teenage girls.

Chief Judge Robbin Stuckert sentenced Lynch to two years of probation.

“Every one of these young women has suffered trauma,” she told Lynch.

“You have caused that trauma.”

The judge ordered Lynch to undergo sex offender treatment, have no unsupervised contact with minors and

register as a sex offender for life. She further sentenced Lynch to 180 days in jail. However, he was given credit for time served and ordered released.

Prosecutors wanted Lynch sentenced to five years in prison. He faced a maximum sentence of seven years.

Lynch’s attorney, Robert Carlson of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office, asked the judge for probation.

Stuckert said sending Lynch to prison would do nothing to rehabilitate him because he wouldn’t be able to get sex offender treatment in prison. She said probation would enable him to get treatment, which was what the victim in the case wanted.

“What you have done to me can’t be put in words, although I feel you need to know how much you impacted my life,” the girl wrote in a victim impact statement to the court.

“I lost trust for people. It’s harder for me to make friends. I can’t focus on my schoolwork most days.

I hate being away from my mother, even if it’s for an hour or so, I hate being home alone.”

Continued from page 7 crime had affected her family. She said many of her relatives blamed themselves for what happened.

“I hated you and wanted you locked up forever and [for] them to throw the key away, but that’s not how I was raised,” she wrote. “... I’m healing and that’s one thing you can’t take from me. ... And if you are released, I strongly suggest you get a lot of help and never harm anyone again so long as you are alive.”

In one of the alleged but uncharged cases, Assistant State’s Attorney Alicia Caplan said Lynch raped a 14-yearold virgin who screamed for him to stop while Lynch’s friend laughed.

Before the judge sentenced Lynch, he made a short statement.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “... It should have never happened.”

The judge said she was alarmed by the allegations in the uncharged cases, especially by the fact that people watched but failed to intervene in the alleged sexual assault of a teenager.

However, she pointed out that prosecutors didn’t bring charges in those cases.

Prosecutors dropped a more serious charge of sexual assault in exchange for Lynch’s guilty plea in August, according to court records. At that time, prosecutors also dropped a misdemeanor case involving another girl and said they would not press charges in two other cases, records show.

Lynch will be released to live with his father’s neighbor in Pekin.

The judge ordered that he attend school or get a GED, get a job and abide by the conditions of his sentence. She warned him that should he violate any of those conditions, he could face further punishment.

Iron doorstops became a hot collectible with rising prices about 1990. A 1985 book picturing doorstops and several auctions, which included rare doorstops, sent collectors searching for examples of the 1930s and ‘40s collectible. They became so popular that thousands of copies were made, many from the original molds. Bright new paint identifies many recent doorstops, but some, with artificial wear and tear, are good enough to fool collectors today. It is almost impossible to break an iron figure, so many iron doorstops still are available with little damage. Top prices are paid for doorstops in great condition with almost all of the original paint. And, of course, rarity adds value. This original Uncle Sam doorstop has the words “For the Open Door” on the base. The words “For the Open Door” had a political meaning, and it was not just a statement about how the doorstop was used. A complicated “Open Door” policy was promoted by the U.S. in 1899. It suggested that all countries should allow China and other countries to trade with no tariffs, no special harbor charges, and with no interference or attempts to divide China. There was another Open Door political discussion in 1922, and this discussion probably is the one mentioned on the doorstop. China opened special investment zones in 1928. There were more international discussions and changes in 1978 concerned with China’s industry, trade and foreign investment. The Uncle Sam doorstop is rare and desirable, and this one, with great paint, sold recently at a Bertoia Auction for $21,240. The 1985 value was $250. *** Q: I have a wooden table that is marked “Larkin Soap Company.” Does that mean it was used in the company office or was it made by a soap company? How old is it?

A: John D. Larkin (1845- 1926) worked for a soap factory in Buffalo in the 1860s. He became a partner and moved with the company to Chicago. He met and married a girl from Buffalo and they moved back to their home town in 1875. There he started his own company, John D. Larkin, and sold “Sweet Home” soap. By 1881, he had a full line of related products and gave a free colored picture card with each bar of soap.

Cards were not enough, so he started giving better premiums including, handkerchiefs, towels, dishes and even furniture.

The desk was the gift with ten dollars’ worth of soap. Soap sales changed by the 1940s, premiums were no longer popu-

lar and the company closed in 1962,Your table was made from 1899 to 1904 when the company name matched the label on your table. *** Q: We have a 10-inch antique plate and would like to know its value. It is by Sarreguemines, signed by L. Moux, and dated late 1800s.There are well dressed 19th century men and women in a room. Can you help?

A: Sarreguemines is the name of a French town that is used as part of a china mark. Utzschneider and Co., a porcelain factory, made ceramics in Sarreguemines, Lorraine, France, from about 1790. In the 19th century, the factory made majolica and transfer-printed wares picturing peasants. When a local innkeeper ordered a table service with local scenes, a local artist Henri Loux (1873-1907) designed a series of 56 illustrations that depicted the daily lives of the people of the Alsace region. Jugs, plates and other dishes were made using the designs starting in 1904. The dishes have come to be known as the Obernai series. Sarreguemines ceased production in 2007, and the factory no longer exists. A factory at Luneville-Saint-Clement still makes several of the designs that made Sarreguemines famous. The marks and scene on your plate suggest it was made about 1898. It probably pictures a scene from the 1898 comic play “D’er Herr Mayor” by painter, writer, and creator of the Alsatian theater, Gustave Stoskopf. It is worth about $50. *** Q: We own an 1800s free-blown glass flask embossed with a dancing sailor on one side and a banjo player sitting on a bench on the other. It’s a half pint and is greenish-blue with an open pontil and sheered lip. It’s in excellent condition with no marks or chips but it’s dark in some areas as if something dried up in the bottle. How much is it worth and who might be interested in buying it? We are late in years and want to sell it as we don’t want our children fighting over our riches (haha!).

A: Your sailor flask was made by the Maryland Glass Works of J.L. Chapman in Baltimore, sometime between 1849 and 1860. The flask is listed in catalogs as McKearin number GXIII-8. It can be looked up online or in libraries in the McKearin book.

“I always thought it would be the independents who would come out to support Trump,” Kuhn said. “People really wanted to see a change, because they were unhappy with the government.”

Democrats, on the other hand, were feeling “disbelief, shock, despair, depression,” said Paul Stoddard, chairman of the DeKalb County Democrats.

“It’s been a bad day,” he said.

Stoddard said Trump’s victory was the result of several factors. While Clinton inspired some in her party, others had little enthusiasm for the candidate.

“She didn’t present a vision for the country,” he said. “Bernie [Sanders] did. And Trump certainly did, although I disagree with that vision. ... Trump was the candidate of change and things haven’t been going all that well since the recession.”

Clinton’s defeat took some by surprise at Northern Illinois University.

Jeff Heise, a 20-year-old student from Batavia who is studying biology,

voted for Clinton. He watched her concession speech Wednesday from the Holmes Student Center.

“Intolerance cannot stand,” he said.

“To have a candidate [Trump] who supported such intolerance is unnerving.”

Heise said he connected with Clinton’s message Wednesday to keep fighting for what’s right.

Quinten Sowell, a 24-year-old from Rockford who graduated from Kishwaukee College, watched the same speech. He also voted for Clinton.

“It was a little disappointing, saddening,” he said. “I’m not the happiest person, but I believe in giving [Trump] a chance. And I’m still going to live my dream.”

While some were aghast at the nation’s choice for president and fearful of what a Trump presidency might entail, Stoddard said the outlook was murky when it comes to what would actually happen next.

“I don’t know what Trump is actually going to do,” Stoddard said. “He used to be a Democrat, now he’s a Republican.”

He said he hoped most of what Trump said in the campaign trail was just rhetoric.

Bruce Rauner and fellow Republicans eliminated the Democrats’ supermajority in the Illinois House on Election Day, strengthening the governor’s chances in the remaining two years of his term to implement a union-weakening, business-friendly agenda that his opponents have resisted amid an historic budget impasse.

Republicans still are the minority party in the Legislature, but with Tuesday’s results – GOP gains made with Rauner’s financial backing – Democrats don’t have the numbers necessary to override him and pass a state budget without backing down.

The state hasn’t had a budget since July 1, 2015, causing cuts to social service programs across the state and reducing funding for higher education.

The GOP reduced the Democrats’ House membership to 67 – still a sizable advantage over the Republicans’ 51 but four fewer than what the party needs to overturn gubernatorial vetoes. Republicans knocked off four

Airbnb hosts sue over home-sharing ordinance

CHICAGO – Chicago crossed the line into the privacy of people’s homes by imposing sweeping regulations governing Airbnb and other home-sharing services, a lawsuit from a group of current Airbnb hosts argued.

Keep Chicago Livable said the ordinance set to take effect in December tramples constitutional rights to freely and anonymously communicate on the internet, use one’s own property, be guaranteed due process, and be protected against illegal search and seizure.

The group filed its lawsuit Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

“The law requires Airbnb to share with the government all information about its users in Chicago without a warrant, consent, or proof of any crime,” said Shorge Kenneth Sato, an attorney for the group.

Trump performed better than Mitt Romney in 2012 in some of the counties where Republicans defeated Democrat incumbents. In the southern Illinois counties of Franklin and Williamson, for example, Trump’s margin of victory was better than Romney’s by 13.4 percent and nearly 7 percent, respectively. Those counties are in the district that Democratic Rep. John Bradley lost by nearly 6 percentage points.

Rhonda Crawford had been expected to win Tuesday’s election over a write-in opponent, as she was the only name listed on the ballot. The 45-year-old can’t be sworn in to the $180,000-a-year job unless she’s cleared of wrongdoing.

The former nurse was fired from her courthouse job and criminally charged for donning a black robe and presiding over traffic cases that should’ve been heard by a real judge. The Illinois Supreme Court temporarily suspended her law license.

U of Illinois president seeks plan to shore up funding

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois president is pursuing an agreement with state leaders that would guarantee the school multiyear funding in exchange for controls on tuition increases and other benchmarks.

For months, Timothy Killeen has informally discussed the idea as a way to provide financial stability for the university amid the state’s budget crisis. State Sen. Bill Cunningham and state Rep. Michael Zalewski were expected to file legislation Thursday that would lock in both the appropriation and limits on tuition increases for five years.

“We fully understand it’s going to take a lot of work, a lot of conversations, maybe some give and take,” university spokesman Tom Hardy said Wednesday. “We’re the past the election, we’re coming up on the new legislative session after the first of the year. We’ve got to launch something at some point.”

Officials: 1 dead, 1 injured after being electrocuted

STERLING – Officials said a telecommunications company worker was electrocuted and another was injured after being shocked while working on a utility pole in Illinois.

The Sterling Daily Gazette reported the men were working with fiber-optic cable Tuesday in Sterling when the bucket on their truck came into contact with power lines.

The Whiteside County coroner’s office identified the man who died as 32-yearold Robert Zulauf of West Chicago.

The newspaper said the other worker, identified as a 23-year-old West Chicago man, was in critical condition Wednesday morning at a hospital.

Authorities are investigating.

LOS ANGELES – Hundreds of students have protested on California campuses after Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

Police said at least 500 people swarmed streets in and around UCLA early Wednesday morning, some shouting anti-Trump expletives. There were no immediate arrests.

Smaller demonstrators were held at University of California campuses and neighborhoods in Berkeley, Irvine and Davis and at San Jose State.

In Oakland, more than 100 protesters took to downtown streets. KNTV-TV reported that protesters burned Trump in effigy, smashed windows of the Oakland Tribune newsroom and set tires and trash on fire.

The California Highway Patrol said a woman was struck by a car during the protest and severely injured.

GOP pledges swift action on Trump’s agenda

WASHINGTON – Elated congressional Republicans pledged swift action Wednesday on President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda as they heralded an extraordinary new era of unified GOP control in Washington.

“He just earned a mandate,” House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin declared of Trump.

“We are going to hit the ground running.”

Said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky: “We would like to see the country go in a different direction and intend to work with him to change the course for America.”

Republicans saw their majorities in the House and Senate reduced, but not by much, as Democrats’ hopes of retaking Senate control vanished.

Police: 7 killed in London morning tram derailment LONDON – Seven people were killed and more than 50 injured when a tram derailed while rounding a tight curve in a rainstorm in south London Wednesday, police said.

Investigators said the train, which tipped over on its side, apparently was going faster than permitted.

British Transport Police initially said five people had died, with several others seriously injured. The force later raised the death toll to seven.

Police arrested the 42-yearold tram driver on suspicion of manslaughter.

Emergency workers labored for hours to free five people trapped in the wreckage of the two-carriage tram tipped over next to an underpass in the Croydon area.

GOP claims mandate; Clinton reacts after loss

By JULIE PACE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Emboldened Republicans claimed a mandate Wednesday for President-elect Donald Trump after his astonishing election triumph, and an emotional Hillary Clinton told crestfallen supporters the GOP victor deserved a “chance to lead.” President Barack Obama pledged a smooth transition of power.

“We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,” the president said of the president-elect, the man who spent years questioning Obama’s birthplace and challenging the legitimacy of his presidency. Obama, who had declared Trump unfit for the presidency, invited him to the White House on Thursday.

Trump was uncharacteristically quiet in the aftermath of his triumph and made no public appearances Wednesday. He huddled with jubilant, sleep-deprived advisers at his eponymous skyscraper in Manhattan, beginning the daunting task of setting up an administration that will take power in just more than two months. He also met with Vice President-elect Mike Pence and took calls from supporters, family and friends, according to spokeswoman Hope Hicks.

In Washington, Trump’s scant transition team sprang into action, culling through personnel lists for top jobs and working through handover plans for government agencies. A person familiar with the transition operations said the personnel process still was in its early stages, but Trump’s team was putting a premium on quickly filling key national security posts.

Trump was expected to consider several loyal supporters for top jobs, including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani for attorney general or national security adviser and campaign finance chairman Steve Mnuchin for Treasury secretary. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker also were expected to be under consideration for foreign policy posts.

After struggling for months with Trump’s takeover of their party, Republican leaders embraced the businessman in victory.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who was lukewarm in his support throughout the campaign, praised him for pulling off “the most incredible political feat I have seen in my lifetime.”

“He just earned a mandate,” Ryan said.

Indeed, Trump will take

office in January with Congress fully in his party’s control, giving him strength to try to pass his agenda and turn the Supreme Court in a conservative direction. Even Republicans were stunned by the scope of their electoral success, including many who had been privately predicting Trump’s defeat.

Clinton’s emotions were raw as she addressed a crowd of supporters, eyes wet with tears, who gathered in a New York ballroom. She said the crushing loss was “painful and it will be for a long time” and acknowledged that the nation was “more divided than we thought.”

Still, Clinton was gracious in defeat, declaring that “Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead.”

With several million votes still to be counted, Clinton held a narrow lead in the nationwide popular vote. Most of the outstanding votes appeared to be in Democratic-leaning states, with the biggest chunk in California, a state Clinton overwhelmingly won. With almost 125 million votes counted, The Associated Press tally had Clinton with 47.7 percent and Trump with 47.5 percent.

Don’t expect Killeen’s plan to get much traction President Timothy Killeen has a good idea on how to restore budget certainty to the University of Illinois.

Killeen told members of the UI’s faculty senate this week that he supports legislation that would provide five years of guaranteed funding in exchange for the UI’s pledge to meet certain educational benchmarks.

Well, good luck with that.

It’s not, of course, that Killeen’s idea isn’t a good one. The problem is that he’s promoting a serious budget plan to a state whose leadership is not as serious about governing as it is about playing politics. Even if state leaders were to decide to take a different approach to their public responsibilities, Illinois is swimming in debt, deficits and public pension liabilities.

The state entered its second year without a budget in July.

In fiscal 2015, the General Assembly passed a deficit budget that Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed. Legislators took no further action to address the spending issue.

For fiscal 2016, the General Assembly didn’t pass a budget at all. When push finally came to shove – legislators feared voter wrath over closed K-12 schools in the fall – Rauner and legislators agreed on a temporary budget that will expire after the election.

How, in a state that hasn’t shown lately that it can pass a single-year budget, does Killeen propose to persuade the Legislature to pass a plan that provides a five-year spending plan for the UI? These are tough times for the state of Illinois, and that includes the UI. Killeen estimates the UI has lost $750 million in state funding over the past two years, a reduction in resources that Killeen said puts the institution “under huge stress.”

“Rome is burning around us,” he said.

Killeen is right. But it’s not just the UI that is in danger of being engulfed in flames, but the entire state.

It’s understandable that Killeen is focused solely on his responsibilities. But it seems unrealistic to expect – or even hope – that the state would address UI issues alone without trying to address the larger problem.

What is that problem? Chiefly, it’s the inability/refusal of Rauner, a Republican, and Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan to reach a compromise agreement. With power divided, what other kind of agreement can one realistically expect them to reach?

If Madigan is to get the tax increases he wants, why shouldn’t Rauner get the economic growth reforms he wants?

If that seems simple to achieve in theory, it has been impossible in reality, at least so far.

It’s instructive to note that Killeen’s proposal isn’t just about money. He’s proposing to meet certain specific benchmarks in exchange for budget certainty. But Killeen also is seeking changes in regulatory and procurement rules, proposals that would not cost the state one thin dime but could save the taxpayers many millions of dollars.

Why hasn’t the state already acted on regulations and procurement? After all, money saved by the UI means money saved by the state. The answer is, the Legislature doesn’t want to act. These common-sense measures are caught up in Madigan’s showdown with the governor.

It’s time to pull together The most divisive presidential election in modern U.S. history is behind us, but not even the most cheerful Pollyanna believes the fractures have healed.

In a historic election where the political establishment, the media and pollsters underestimated both the mood and the will of the American people, the voters have spoken in electing Donald Trump as our next president.

That news brings joy to nearly half the country and despair to nearly the other half, but it is clear that many in many states wanted drastic change from the status quo that permeated Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

What also was grossly underestimated is that many citizens, in the South, in Rust Belt states and others across the country, are economically hurting. That pain spans decades and several presidential administrations as globalization has changed the face of manufacturing.

That economic trend is a complex one and it’s difficult to envision how one U.S. president would be able to reverse it as Trump has promised to do. Americans want good jobs and rightfully so. They believe trade deals and immigration policies have put them at a disadvantage, and Trump’s messages on those points were perhaps his most persuasive ones.

Frankly, it’s unclear what kind of president Trump will be. We’re not sure he knows, but we trust that he understands that running this great nation is far more consequential than running a real estate empire or hosting a reality TV show. He did show some grace and humility in his speech early Wednesday morning, qualities which were virtually absent during his campaign.

What this election is not is a victory for bigots, misogynists and racists. This country is too diverse and will never tolerate the kind of behavior displayed by some at Trump campaign rallies. These were shameful moments. It is immoral to call them anything else.

We’ve not heard much that is hopeful from this campaign, and Trump has displayed a woeful ignorance of foreign policy.

His lifetime of narcissistic behavior and demonstrating little more than seeking gain for his personal interests has been troubling. We are hopeful that he brings in capable leaders and that a still-Republican-controlled Congress keeps him in check.

This United States is and will always be greater than any one individual.

And while it may take some time, we hope this nation, which was, is and will remain great, can pull together for the greater good.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

So he won. The nation takes a deep breath.

Raw ego and proud illiteracy have won out and a severely learning-disabled man with a real character problem will be president. We are so exhausted from thinking about this election, millions of people will take up leaf-raking and garage cleaning with intense pleasure.

We liberal elitists are wrecks.

The Trumpers had a whale of a good time, waving their signs, jeering at the media, beating up protesters, chanting “Lock her up” – we elitists just stood and clapped. Nobody chanted “Stronger Together.” It just doesn’t chant.

The Trumpers never expected their guy to actually win the thing, and that’s their problem now. It was pleasure enough for them just to know that they were driving us wild with dismay – by “us,” I mean librarians, children’s authors, yoga practitioners, Unitarians, birdwatchers, people who make their own pasta, opera goers, the grammar police, people who keep books on their shelves, that bunch.

The Trumpers exulted in knowing we were tearing our hair out.

They had our number, like a bratty kid who knows exactly how to make

Alas for the Trump voters, the disasters he will bring on this country will fall more heavily on them than anyone else. The uneducated white males who elected him are the vulnerable ones and they will not like what happens next.

Resentment is no excuse for baldfaced stupidity.

America is still the land where the waitress’ kids can grow up to become physicists and novelists and pediatricians, but it helps a lot if the waitress and her husband encourage good habits and the ambition to use your God-given talents and the kids aren’t plugged into electronics day and night. Whooping it up for the candidate of cruelty and ignorance does less than nothing for your kids.

We liberal elitists are now completely in the clear.

The government is in Republican hands. Let them deal with him.

Democrats can spend four years

raising heirloom tomatoes, meditating, reading Jane Austen, traveling around the country, tasting artisan beers, and let the Republicans build the wall and carry on the trade war with China and deport the undocumented and deal with opioids and we Democrats can go for a long brisk walk and smell the roses.

I like Republicans. I used to spend Sunday afternoons with a bunch of them, drinking Scotch and soda and trying to care about NFL football. It was fun. I tried to think like them.

(Life is what you make it. People are people. When the going gets tough, tough noogies.) But I came back to liberal elitism.

Don’t be cruel.

Elvis said it, and it’s true.

We all experienced cruelty back in our playground days, boys who beat up on the timid, girls who made fun of the homely and naive, and most of us, to our shame, went along with it, afraid to defend the victims lest we become one of them.

But by your 20s, you should be done with cruelty. Trump was the cruelest candidate since George Wallace. How he won on fear and bile is for political pathologists to study. The country is already tired of his noise, even his own voters. He is

likely to become the most intensely disliked president since Hoover.

His children will carry the burden of his name. He will never be happy in his own skin. But the damage he will do to our country – who knows? His supporters voted for change, and boy, are they going to get it.

Back to real life. I went up to my hometown the other day and ran into my gym teacher, Stan Nelson, looking good at 96. He commanded a landing craft June 6, 1944, at Normandy and never said a word about it back then, just made us do chinups whether we wanted to or not.

I saw my biology teacher Lyle Bradley, a Marine pilot in the Korean War, still going bird-watching in his 90s. I was not a good student then, but I am studying both of them now.

They have seen it all and are still optimistic. The past year of politics has taught us absolutely nothing.

Zilch. Zero. Nada. The future is scary. Let the uneducated have their day.

I am now going to pay more attention to teachers.

Trump didn’t win because of racism ​So this is what it feels like to live through a political earthquake.

Donald Trump’s victory is a bigger upset than Harry Truman’s 1948 defeat of Thomas Dewey. Truman was, after all, the sitting president.

Many people found the prospect of President Trump unimaginable: I did, in the weeks after his campaign began (and as late as early evening on Election Day I still thought he was likely to lose).

Given how surprising the results were, we should wait before making confident judgments about what it all means. But we should look very skeptically at one of the explanations that I’m seeing a lot from the liberals I follow on social

There are serious reasons for concern about Trump’s coming presidency, and his handling of racial controversies is among them.

But during the general election, his numbers declined when he engaged in his worst and most publicized behavior, such as the feud with the parents of a Muslim soldier

Voters seem to have backed him despite such episodes, rather than because of them.

Hillary Clinton was wrong, as well as self-destructive, in consigning half of Trump’s voters to a “basket of deplorables.”

However upset liberals are about the election results, they should avoid repeating her mistake.

Toledo scores late touchdown, beats Huskies at Guaranteed Rate Field

CHICAGO – The streak is over.

After making a bowl game in eight consecutive seasons, barring something truly strange the Huskies will not make the postseason after falling, 31-24, to Toledo on a last-minute touchdown Wednesday night in the first football game played at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.

Toledo senior running back Kareem Hunt scored on a 2-yard run with 1:15 remaining to give the Rockets their first win over Northern Illinois since 2009.

“I told them in the locker room that I was extremely proud of them,” Northern Illinois coach Rod Carey said about the Huskies after the loss. “I think they played extremely hard tonight. ... That’s one thing that I give the leadership of this team a ton of credit, they have not flinched and they’ve been getting better and better. There’s some big picture things out there, but they’ve done a great job of blocking that out and just going to work.”

Playing without starting quarterback Anthony Maddie, who was a game-time decision, the Huskies (3-7 overall, 3-3 in Mid-American Conference West) surrendered a two-possession lead in the second half and with seven losses on the season, they can’t make the six wins needed to earn automatic bowl qualification.

Sophomore quarterback Ryan Graham, who was thrust into the spotlight after leading the Huskies to a comeback win at Toledo last season after Drew Hare went down with an Achilles injury, started in place of Maddie. He finished 24 for 43 with 221 yards and three touchdowns but threw the game-sealing interception in the closing seconds on a deep pass down the middle to Christian Blake.

“We got the look we wanted, I just underrthrew it,” Graham said.

Maddie, who has started the past five games since original starting quarterback Drew Hare was lost for the year with a leg injury in the second week of the season, injured his leg toward the end of the first half in last week’s win over Bowling Green but came back to play the second half against the Falcons.

Graham connected with Blake on a 19-yard touchdown to give the Huskies a 21-10 lead with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter before the Rockets scored 14 unanswered points to take the lead.

After NIU’s kicker Christian Hagan tied it with a 22-yard field goal, the Rockets went 71 yards on nine plays before Hunt scored the game-winning touchdown.

NIU senior wide receiver Kenny Golladay had a season-high 14 receptions for 143 yards and a touchdown, senior running back Joel Bouagnon had 84 rushing yards and junior cornerback Shawun Lurry recorded his second interception of the year. Golladay now 1,023 receiving yards and is the first Huskie to have two 1,000-plus receiving yard seasons.

For the Rockets, Hunt had a game-high 122 rushing yards and the game-winning score and quarterback Logan Woodside went 23 for 33 with 286 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

The game against the Rockets was the latest attempt for NIU to gain some attention in the Chicago-area, with the game in the White Sox’s ball park being dubbed the “Chi-town Showdown.” The announced attendance was 10,180 on the night. It’s the fourth time the Huskies have played in Chicago, with three games played at Soldier Field.

cumstance, including stadium fireworks shooting off after every Huskies touchdown.

“It was cool as a senior, having it be my last ‘home’ game in Chicago, you have to focus on the game,” said Golladay, who is from Chicago. “You can talk with your family after the game.”

The Huskies got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown catch by tight end Shane Wimann on a drive that was extended by a Toledo penalty. Northern Illinois kicker Christian Hagan lined up and made a 33-yard field goal, but the Rockets were called for an offsides penalty to give the Huskies a first down.

Bouagnon had a 10-yard run before Graham found Wimann in the right corner for the touchdown late in the first quarter.

After a Toledo field goal, the Huskies extended their lead on a 4-yard touchdown catch by Golladay – one of his nine catches in the first half – to cap a 12-play, 86-yard drive to put them ahead 14-3 with 7:41 left in the second quarter.

“We were looking for some big plays but they were playing a little softer and trying to make us earn it,” Carey said

of the Huskies’ four 11-plus play scoring drives on the night. “At times we did that and other times, unfortunately we didn’t other times. We needed to do it one more time.”

The Rockets cut it to a one-possession game in their first drive of the second half, with Woodside finding tight end Michael Roberts for a 27-yard touchdown to trim the Huskies’ lead to 14-10.

One of the Huskies’ best drives of the game came following the Rockets’ touchdown. They went 75 yards on 14 plays and converted on third down four separate times – the last coming on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Graham to Christian Blake with 6:09 left in the third.

The Rockets’ second-half push continued with a 36-yard touchdown reception by Jon’Vea Johnson late in the third quarter and Woodside found Roberts for another score – a 5-yard touchdown connection – to give Toledo a 24-21 lead with 12:32 remaining.

Midway through the fourth quarter, the Huskies had the ball first and goal from the 9-yard line but had to settle for the 22-yard field goal by Hagan.

Fans revel in attending historic NIU-Toledo game

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – Northern Illinois grads Zach Pfeiffer and Brian Plotke try to get to as many Huskie games as they can.

When the school announced the team would play at what was then called U.S. Cellular Field in the first football game at the stadium, both jumped at the chance to watch a game closer to their homes.

Then when the stadium changed names and is now Guaranteed Rate Field, making the NIU-Toledo game Wednesday the first game of any sport played at the stadium with that name, that just sweetened the pot.

“This is awesome and I wouldn’t miss this,” Plotke, of Bolingbrook said of the game, a 31-24 Toledo win that snapped the Rockets’ six-game losing streak to NIU. “It never happened before and it may never happen again. It’s not built for football, so it’s really cool to see a football game here.”

Plotke and Pfeiffer were among the announced crowd of 10,180 at the game.

“We try to go to as many games as we can for the team,” said Pfeiffer, who is from Westmont and, like Plotke, a member of the class of 2012. “We try to get the weekend games, but also the ones at big venues like this.”

ta Clark made the 15-mile trip from Whiting, Indiana to witness the game.

As White Sox fans, they liked the stadiums. Rex Clark said he follows the Huskies online and found about the game when it was announced.

“We figured, hey it’s history, right?” said Rex Clark, adding that he has sons living in DeKalb and Malta.

“It’s everything we thought it would be. They really put on a great production here. It’s great football and a quality kind of night. We’re really enjoying ourselves.”

“I like the stadium,” Anita Clark said. “We see the Sox here, and tonight it’s just different.”

Given the history of the two teams, Plotke said he was surprised, but ex-

cited, to see the team give up the home game with the Rockets to play here.

“It was surprising they gave up a home game to Toledo at Huskie Stadium cause we’ve been so dominant against them in the past,” Plotke said.

“At Huskie Stadium they struggle for attendance sometimes, so it would be a unique opportunity to take the shot and see what happens.”

Like the Clarks, Plotke said he was enjoying the game. Pfeiffer did as well.

“It’s the first game here, and even though we’re not that great this year, no one can take that from us,” Pfeiffer said.

Huskies miss their chance to join the memorable 2016 comebacks

CHICAGO – In the year of the underdog, the Northern Illinois football team squandered its chance to join the parade of improbable comebacks.

We’ve seen two teams come back from 3-1 deficits in best-of seven series to win titles. And both did so to overcome a lot of baggage – the Cubs ending a 108-year World Series drought, and the Cleveland Cavaliers ending decades of futility for an entire city.

There was also some kind of politics thing or something Tuesday that featured an underdog comeback against an overwhelming favorite or some such. I’m fuzzy on the details.

But with their 31-24 loss against Toledo at Guaranteed Rate Field, the

“That’s the one thing we need to focus in on as a group is you come in a game with a game plan, but if a team is exploiting that game plan early, you’ve gotta get out of it pretty fast and make adjustments. That’s something we’re still learning together.’’

When it was asked of Wade if that falls on the coaching staff, the veteran said, “It’s on the players to communicate. I mean we’re out there on the floor and we see certain things, so definitely it’s on us and it’s on our coaching staff as well. It’s on all of us, and the thing is they have to feel confident and know that we can make the adjustment as well, depending on who is on the floor. And that goes back to the point of studying. You have to study and be prepared for multiple players coming in and guarding multiple situations. It’s all trust, and that’s what we continue to build here.’’

ATLANTA – Jimmy Butler’s message to his team was simple Wednesday night.

Get butts in the chairs and chairs in the film room.

Players, coaches, himself, heck, team trainers if it will help.

The last thing Butler wants to go through is another season of lost opportunity, all wrapped up by the time the regular season comes to an end.

“It’s all of us,’’ Butler said, after the Bulls’ 115-107 loss to Atlanta at Phillips Arena. “Everybody in this locker room, including myself, the coaches, we have to start knowing what we’re supposed to be doing.

“I understand guys just came off a back-to-back, guys are shooters, non-shooters, whatever it might be. I think we just have to do what we’re supposed to do. The scouting report, we pay attention to it. And then we get away from it as soon as that ball is thrown up in the air and we get to battling. We lock in on that and we’ll be fine.’’

Playing Robin to his Batman was Dwyane Wade, who had 25 points and grabbed five steals.

Not only did Wade agree with Butler’s assessment, but took it a step further. Knowing the game plan and executing it is one thing, knowing when it’s not working and changing it up, well, that has to be on the table.

“I definitely agree with studying film,’’ Wade said. “You’d be surprised with how many players probably don’t study opponent. If a player likes to go right, you should know he likes to go right.’’

But then Wade pointed out that the players have to know when something isn’t working on the defensive end, and get that message to the coaches if they don’t see it themselves.

“For me, I’m a firm believer in don’t give a team one look,’’ Wade said.

“When you’re giving them a constant one look all the time it’s easy for a team to get comfortable, and that’s what [Atlanta] did early. Then we changed a little bit and started giving them different looks, and we were able to get back in the game.

Creating more turnovers remains point of emphasis in 2nd half

LAKE FOREST – An emphasis on taking the ball away tops every team’s priority list heading into a season, but the Bears – coming off an abysmal year taking the ball away with only eight interceptions last season – used it as a talking point all preseason.

Through eight games, however, the ‘D’ has only four interceptions and three fumble recoveries. They are tied for third-to-last in the NFL with the seven takeaways.

“We’re just not getting enough of them,” said Vic Fangio, whose 49ers defenses averaged 19.5 picks a season from 2011-14. “We try to emphasize it as much as we can, both on the field and in the meeting room, and we just haven’t seemed to come up with them.

Hopefully, we’ll get a stretch where we can get a few more.”

There was a golden opportunity against Minnesota, when a Pernell McPhee hit on Sam Bradford caused a fumble, but no player picked it up, thinking it was an incomplete pass.

Unexpected thrill ride

Presidential election coverage provides drama on TV

By DAVID BAUDER The Associated Press NEW YORK – Donald Trump’s stunning victory against Hillary Clinton in the presidential election Tuesday was a final twist in a made-for TV thrill ride – and a stern lesson to journalists to avoid leaping to conclusions.

Relying on polls and group think, television networks began covering election night with a barely concealed assumption that Clinton would win, only to see the actual results suggest something quite different. Tens of millions of Americans followed the drama on all manner of screens as the drama stretched into the early morning.

The Associated Press declared that Trump had won the presidency at 1:30 a.m. Within 10 minutes, CNN reported that Clinton had called Trump to concede. Except for the AP, the politicians beat media organizations: CNN called the race for Trump as the Republican took the stage at his Manhattan headquarters, and CBS, ABC and NBC did the same as he spoke.

“Donald Trump is the first person to be elected president without previously holding office since Dwight Eisenhower,” said CBS’ Scott Pelley. “And he did it without the advantage of having won World War II. Less than an hour earlier, Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta had announced that the Democrat would not be addressing her supporters that night. That triggered a bitter argument on CNN that spoke to the challenge in healing the nation after a rough campaign.

Former Trump campaign chairman Corey Lewandowski, now a CNN analyst, was angered by Clinton’s decision not to come out and said Trump would be criticized for making the same decision. “Corey, you’re a horrible person right now,” said analyst and Clinton supporter Van Jones.

The election results offered a stern rebuke to pollsters – few of whom predicted a Trump victory – newspaper editorial boards and the Hollywood establishment, which lined up almost unanimously behind Clinton.

The post-election period will include soul-searching for those institutions, as well as politicians.

“I am sitting here surprised by the fact that we were surprised by this, in a campaign full of surprises,” said ABC News’ Cecilia Vega.

The much-followed Upshot blog on The New York Times website had a meter predicting the chances of each candidate winning. It began Tuesday with an 85 percent certainty that Clinton would win, and flipped as the evening went on to a near certainty of a Trump win.

Television networks, concentrating on the electoral college and paths to victory for each of the candidates, also spent virtually no time discussing the possibility that Clinton could win the popular vote and lose the election.

Analysts spoke of Trump’s unexpected strength in rural areas, with CNN’s David Axelrod calling it a “primal scream on behalf of voters who are disenfranchised with the status quo.”

MSNBC’s Brian Williams called it a failure of prognosticators to take into account how many lawn signs Trump inspired as opposed to Clinton.

“This is a revolt of the unprotected class against the protected elite class,” said Fox News Channel’s Monica Crowley.

A chorus of I-told-you-so’s is also likely in coming days. NBC News’ Kasie Hunt noted as she traveled with Clinton during the last week of the campaign that it went from small staged events to other small staged

events. She said it did not feel like she was covering a winning campaign.

“And I took some criticism for that from some sources,” she said.

CNN’s Jones grew emotional when talking about how many Americans are going to struggle waking up on Wednesday and telling their children what happened. “This was a whitelash against a changing country,” Jones said, and many newer Americans will feel threatened by it.

It was a far different mood while the polls were still open. Vice Media and Slate collaborated on a system that combined exit polling with early voting profiles to project candidate vote totals in seven battleground states and posted the material throughout the day on Tuesday. Clinton was leading Tuesday afternoon in all seven of the states, according to the VoteCastr model.

Television networks vowed to stick with tradition and not reveal that information. But it was hard to miss some foreshadowing.

Trump called in to Fox News Channel shortly after 1 p.m., where he talked about a rigged electoral system and passed up the chance to exhort supporters to vote. Fox interviewer Martha MacCallum asked him four questions about what he might do if he lost.

Shortly thereafter, Republican National Committee aide Sean Spicer on Fox offered a very specific prediction – that Trump’s electoral vote total would exceed those of President Barack Obama’s two opponents – without predicting victory. Republican pollster Ed Rollins told Fox’s Shepard Smith at 2 p.m. that it would take a miracle for Trump to win.

CNN correspondent Brianna Keilar, covering the Clinton campaign, told Wolf Blitzer shortly after 4 p.m. that the Clinton camp was confident heading into the evening.

“I hear they’re confident,” Blitzer said. “Are they very, very confident or are they nervous?”

Responded Keilar: “I’m not picking up any nerves.”

Five hours later, Keilar noted the stunned faces on people at Clinton headquarters on Manhattan’s West Side. They came expecting a party – maybe even an early night – and left contemplating the prospect of a President Trump.

Even before the polls closed, there were warnings not to jump to conclusions too early. “Please keep in mind, exit polls can shift faster than a feather in a tornado,” tweeted former CBS News anchor Dan Rather.

Bread & Roses fall concert to help fight homelessness DAILY CHRONICLE Bread & Roses women’s chorus will present a concert to benefit Hope Haven at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20. The concert, directed by Peggy Safford, will take place at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N. Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb.

Hope Haven is a nonprofit service organization that has served homeless individuals and families in the DeKalb community for the past 20 years. Its mission is to provide shelter, meals and life skills programs for homeless individuals and families while preparing them for re-housing.

Admission to the concert is free, though donations will be taken for Hope Haven.

Bread & Roses is “feeling the beat” as they prepare for the concert, “Rhythm Revelry.” Many of the songs they will sing involve a variety of rhythms, some with hand-clapping and body percussion and others with a variety of drums, other percussion instruments and accompaniment.

The chorus welcomes two special groups who will join them for several African pieces, as well as perform some of their own repertoire. One is a local women’s African drumming group UKB (the Underground Kpanlogo Band), of which Safford is a member.

Both groups have performed at local musical events, including several Transformation Through Rhythm concerts, supporting music therapy around the world, specifically at the DeKalb County Hos-

pice and its sister hospice in Knysna, South Africa.

Bread & Roses delivers messages of diversity, peace and justice, protection of the environment, women’s empowerment and acceptance for all.

The choir members put their words into action by donating the proceeds from most concerts to local organizations serving people in need.

Art Box opens ‘Good Things/ Small Packages’ exhibition DAILY CHRONICLE The Art Box, frame shop and gallery in downtown DeKalb, will host an exhibition of small works called, “Good Things/Small Packages,” from Nov. 14 through Dec. 31. The opening is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

There is a saying in gift giving that “good things come in small packages.” This is typically in reference to something expensive or thoughtful such as jewelry or a family heirloom, but something small doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive.

Fine art also falls into that same category of “good small things.” Many historically famous paintings are sur-

prisingly small.

The exhibit at The Art Box will feature the small side of mostly local artists who show their work online under dekalbgallery.com. Producing small work is challenging for the artist because the picture plane is seen as a whole at close range. Errors can be obvious, however, happy accidents and serendipity still apply no matter what dimensions dictate.

The Art Box is at 308 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. Shop and gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed Wednesdays and typically Sundays.

Nyssa Lowenstein, a senior in Northern Illinois University’s School of Theatre and Dance, will direct her own play, “The Elephant Grief,” opening Nov. 17. Performances are in Diversions Lounge Theatre in NIU’s Holmes Student Center.

Using talents from all departments of the school, Lowenstein crafted her play to address the universal experience of grief.

“I lost three family members in a short period of time,” she said in a news release. “I was here, out of state, being a student. I didn’t know how to grieve. I didn’t know if I was doing it right.”

“It was hard, but the more I blamed myself for not going through the whole process, the more I hid

from it,” Lowenstein said in the release. “This piece is my realization that there is no ‘right’ way.”

“The Elephant Grief” is a movement-based piece that explores different types of experiences one can have with a personal loss, or by supporting someone who has had a loss. The scenes are tied together with props, projections and movement styles drawn from Lowenstein’s’ training.

“The Elephant Grief” runs Nov. 17 through 20, with 8 p.m. curtain time on all nights and a Saturday, Nov. 19, matinee at 2 p.m. All general admission tickets cost $3, and are available only at the door. Proceeds go toward presentation of the annual Senior BFA in Acting Showcase in Chicago next spring.

28 Simple steps help prevent hospital delirium Dear Dr. K: The last time my mother was in the hospital, she experienced delirium.

Given her age and state of health, it’s likely she will be hospitalized again. Is there anything I can do to prevent her from becoming delirious the next time?

Dear Reader: About half of people older than 65 experience delirium – a sudden change in mental status – during a hospital stay. This troubling experience increases their risk for cognitive impairment and dementia after their release.

It’s easy to understand why hospitalization can be disorienting. Patients’ daily routines are overturned. Suddenly they’re dealing with a stream of people they’ve probably never met before. Because of noise, and being awakened for a treatment or a test, it’s hard to sleep through the night. Medications also can affect their mental state. As we age, it becomes even more difficult to adapt to these disruptions.

Dr. Sharon Inouye is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Decades ago, she recognized delirium in older patients isn’t inevitable. She and her colleagues designed a delirium-prevention program called the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP).

HELP identifies patients at risk for delirium and provides them with special care to minimize the main risk factors for delirium during their hospital stay. These risk factors include sleep deprivation, immobility, visual impairment, hearing impairment and dehydration.

HELP doesn’t just reduce the incidence of delirium during hospitalization. It also helps prevent falls, mental and physical declines and the need for nursing home care.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff whether the hospital has a delirium prevention program. If not, here are several things you can do to help: • Keep communication simple. In a calm, reassuring voice, state one fact at a time, as you have learned the facts from the doctors and nurses. Do not overwhelm or overstimulate your mother with too much information.

• Help orient the person. If necessary, remind your mother where she is and why.

Be subtle about it. Don’t ask her if she knows where she is and why she’s there.

Instead, make comments such as “I sure like the nice big windows here at General Hospital, don’t you?” Or “You’re going to feel so much better when the doctors here at General Hospital take out your gall bladder, Mom.” • Try a hands-on approach. Gently massage or stroke your mother’s arm or back if she finds that soothing.

• Be a companion. Stay in the hospital as much as possible. Arrange with family and friends to visit in shifts so someone can be present around the clock.

• Work with the staff. If allowed, encourage your mother to eat and drink. Accompany her on walks down the hospital corridor.

• Be vigilant. If you detect signs of possible delirium – confusion, memory problems, personality changes – discuss them with the medical staff as soon as you can. Family and friends often are the first to notice subtle changes.

• Dr. Komaroff is a physician and professor at Harvard Medical School.

My husband recently was offered a new job that carries with it a significant increase in salary as well as upward mobility.

He was offered the job by a woman he used to work with years ago. She will be his new boss.

It recently was brought to my attention not only were they co-workers, they also used to sleep together. He tells me there’s absolutely nothing there, and I don’t need to be worried.

However, I can’t help but wonder why they have maintained contact for all these years, and why she sought him out to work for her.

She also is married, and I wonder if her husband knows their history, and if he would be OK with his wife’s request to work with a former lover.

Am I overreacting? Or should people cut off contact with their exes once they are married? Should I be worried about a physical or emotional affair? I just don’t have a good feeling about this. Thank you for your help. –

With winners outside spades and reasonably strong trumps, South should have played on spades. After three rounds, he could have attacked clubs and eventually lost only two spades, one heart and two clubs.
