Let’s vote, accept result and move forward together Perspective will return, just as certainly as the mattress commercials will return to our TV screens.

For some of us, it will take longer. There will be the random people who, after so many weeks and even months of swimming in this stew of political propaganda, will continue to insist that Donald Trump is the Antichrist and that Hillary Clinton is a criminal who should be in jail.

Certainly, we’ll continue to have our disagreements, but generally, after we all accept reality, the nastiness will fade.

We’ve seen enough vitriol this year, much of it between the presidential candidates – who waged one of the uglier campaigns in our country’s history – but that influence could be felt on the local level, too, leading to some cringe-worthy moments that found their way into the Daily Chronicle.

It’s to be expected, however, and we’ve survived it so far, and we will survive after the results of tonight’s elections are known.

No matter what anyone says, the institutions and values of our country will persevere no matter who wins the race for the presidency, or U.S. Senate or the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Ours is a country founded on checks and balances, the rule of law and the rights of the individual. Those things will not go away under President Hillary Clinton or President Donald Trump. (Which one of those made you shiver a little?)

11.08.16 CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The lone American off the planet has cast his vote from space, keeping with NASA’s motto of “Vote while you float.”

NASA said Monday that astronaut Shane Kimbrough filed his ballot in Tuesday’s presidential election from the International Space Station over the past few days. He arrived at the orbiting lab in mid-October.

The Cubs couldn’t have won the World Series if the Indians hadn’t seen their title drought reach 68 years. You can’t have a winner without a loser, and no one likes losing the big game or the big election.

But even if the game goes to extra innings, you have to accept the result and move on, and eventually, the two sides should at least congratulate each other.

Today, I’m hoping for clear winners, anything but the Bush v. Gore scenario that played out after the 2000 election, when it took 36 days before we knew who had won.

Another 36 days of this campaign would be at least as stressful as Game 7 of the World Series was for fans of the Cubs and Indians.

Although I’m sure that we as a country would be able eventually to negotiate the peaceful transition of power – I really don’t want to test that hypothesis.

So let’s all vote, wait for the returns, and then hopefully have a result we can all accept.

At the end of the day, we’re all in this together.

What you need to know to vote today

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Polling stations across DeKalb County are set to open at 6 a.m. today for the 2016 general election, but about 19 percent of registered voters already have cast ballots, officials said.

As of noon Monday, 11,624 people took advantage of early voting or voteby-mail options this year – about 19 percent of the county’s estimated 60,000 registered voters, County Clerk and Recorder Doug Johnson said. That’s on par with early voting turnout for the 2012 general election, he said.

Most will head to the polls today, so here’s a quick how-to guide for Election Day voters:

Where can I vote?

Registered voters can vote at their designated polling place. To find your polling place, visit http://dekalb.il. clerkserve.com.

When can I vote?

Under state law, polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Those still in line at 7 p.m. will be allowed to cast ballots.

How can I tell if I’m registered?

If you aren’t sure whether you are registered, you can check online at dekalb.il.clerkserve.com. Be prepared to enter your birth date.

I haven’t registered.

Can I still vote?

Yes. You can register and vote today. To register today, go to your polling place with two forms of ID, one of which has your current DeKalb County address on it. You also can use a credit card, utility bill or other piece of mail.

In addition, there are three registration centers in DeKalb County where any DeKalb County resident can go to register and vote on Election Day: • The DeKalb County Administration Building, 110 E. When will results be available?

Ballot counting starts after the polls close at 7 p.m. If everything goes according to plan, Johnson expects to have preliminary results by 9:30 or 10 p.m. By law, the county has two weeks to certify the results.

What’s at stake locally?

Perhaps the most watched race will be for DeKalb County state’s attorney.

Incumbent Richard Schmack, a Democrat, is being challenged by Republican Rick Amato for the county’s top law enforcement position.

Most of the DeKalb County Board races are uncontested, but there are three contested seats, enough to sway the 13-11 Democratic majority on the board.

Two of the three contested races are in District 4, which includes part of the city of Sycamore. Republican Laurie Emmer is facing Democrat Virginia Sherrod for a four-year term. That seat has been held by Anita Jo Turner, a Democrat who is retiring from the board.

In the same district, Republican Demetri Broches faces Democrat Steve Faivre to finish a two-year, unexpired term. Faivre was appointed to fill Joseph Bassett’s unexpired term when Bassett resigned.

And Republican Jonathan Schmarje faces Democrat John Wett for a seat in District 2, which includes Genoa and Kingston.

On the judicial side, Democrat Shannon Stoker is challenging sitting

DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Bradley Waller, a Republican. Four other judges are up for retention.

All of DeKalb County’s state representatives and senators are running unopposed, as are DeKalb County Circuit Clerk Maureen Josh and DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller.

The only local referendum that will affect a large number of DeKalb County residents is a proposition for a 1 percent sales tax increase in Sandwich.

City adds stop sign, parking restrictions

SYCAMORE – The intersection of Locust and Exchange streets in downtown Sycamore will become a three-way stop instead of a two-way to accommodate traffic around the DeKalb County Jail expansion site.

The Sycamore City Council voted, 7-1, Monday to approve the change and to designate no-parking zones on both sides of Sacramento Street from State to Exchange. Council member Steve Braser opposed.

Traffic along Locust now will have a southbound stop sign at the Exchange intersection.

Mayor Ken Mundy said the intersection usually is busy, and it has been more so because of traffic going to and getting around the jail con-

struction.

“Putting a three-way stop there means we have better traffic control and more order, especially as people venture into that area,” he said.

“Maybe they’re in Sycamore to do court business, or they’re not familiar with the neighborhood. The free [parking] lots are over that way close by, so we want to make sure people get through that area safely.”

City Manager Brian Gregory said the first block of Sacramento Street north of State Street is a mostly commercial area, and vehicles parking there make the street too narrow for passing traffic. The street also is a common route for cement trucks, he said.

Police Chief Glenn Theriault said no parking spots are painted along this section of the street, but there

are no restrictions, either. “[The street] is so wide there, it appears as though it may be parking, but in fact it’s not,” Theriault said.

“It’s been widened, I believe, based on [Illinois Department of Transportation] regulations. At times, we’ll get two cars that will park there.”

Braser said the council should consider rerouting trucks from this street rather than restricting parking.

However, Theriault said, state regulations make it difficult to ban trucks from streets.

“While it’s possible, I don’t know if it’s practical,” Theriault said. “It would also be diverting all of that truck traffic that needs to go to the west back around and through downtown traffic.”

Two Kaneland High School teens dead after crash DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Two Kaneland High School students were killed Saturday when the pickup truck they were in crashed with a semitrailer.

The driver of the pickup, Arthur Stenger, 16, of the 1900 block of Cambridge Way, Montgomery, and his passenger, Elijah Vajgert, 16, of the 42W200 block of Beith Road, Maple Park, died at the scene. Both were juniors at Kaneland High School.

Kane County sheriff’s deputies were called about 5 p.m. to the crash, at Meredith and Beith roads in Virgil

Township, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Initial reports were that one of the vehicles was on fire, and there were live power lines in the road, the release said.

A preliminary investigation found that the 1979 Peterbuilt semi, which was hauling corn, was traveling south on Meredith Road approaching the intersection with Beith Road. The 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup that the teens were in was heading west on Beith and stopped at the stop sign for the intersection.

The pickup pulled into the intersection for an unknown reason and was

struck by the semi, the release said.

The semi did not have to stop.

After the crash, the vehicles rolled over and took out a utility pole and power lines near the intersection, authorities said.

The driver of the semi, a 60-year-old man from the 13N500 block of Burlington Road, Burlington, was treated at the scene and released, deputies said.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the crash.

No citations were immediately issued.

Crisis response teams including counselors were available to meet as long as necessary with students and staff at Kaneland High School and Harter Middle School.

DOUGLAS PAUL CLARK Born: January 18, 1955 Died: November 5, 2016

Douglas Paul Clark, 61, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Saturday, November 5, 2016, at his home in rural DeKalb surrounded by his wife, Laura and his family.

Born January 18, 1955 in DeKalb, the son of Howard B. “Jack” Clark and Mary J. “Joey” (Eakle) Clark, Doug married Laura L. Farris on November 3, 1972 at the Methodist Church in Sycamore.

Doug graduated from Sycamore High School with his wife in the Class of 1973.

During high school he worked for a local hog farm. He was employed for 22½ years at General Mills in West Chicago; he enjoyed hosting the General Mills Corn Boil for the employees for 36 years.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Laura; one daughter, Serena Clark Dunbar of Sycamore; three sons, Michael (Jennifer) Clark of Waterman. Corey (Jen “Lenny” Berringer) Clark of Hinckley, Brian (Lindsay) Steele of Malta; granddaughters, Grace, Anne, Mallory, Rose, Emily, Olivia, Gretchyn, Brianne, Kaylynn; grandsons, Bradley, Kyle, Jacob, Jordan, Aydan; his faithful dog, Precious; cat, Stash; sister, Mona (David) Clark Hamilton of Sycamore, two brothers, Randy Clark of Arvada, Colorado, Dallas “Skip” (Cynthia) Clark of Lanexa, Virginia; mother-in-law, Lillian Farris of Sycamore; sister-in-law, Maria Farris of Sycamore; brother-in-law, Dan (Brandy) Farris of Forreston; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Adam Clark in 2001; his parents; and his father-in-law, Hollis Farris.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 11, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb. Burial will follow at North Clinton Cemetery in Waterman.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 10, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb.

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Democrats in Illinois are counting on a big victory by Hillary Clinton to carry them to important wins in the statehouse, U.S. Senate and a pricey contest for comptroller.

Republicans, meanwhile, are angling for more influence in the Democrat-controlled Legislature with the help of wealthy GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner, who has invested unprecedented amounts of money on down-ballot races that will affect what he’s able to achieve in the last two years of his term.

Here’s a guide to Tuesday’s action:

Presidential race

Barring a major upset, Clinton is expected to easily pick up her birth state’s 20 electoral college votes.

Since 2000, Illinois has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate and the state is not considered to be in play this year. And Illinois Republicans have tried to distance themselves from their party’s firebrand candidate, Donald Trump. Rauner won’t even say his name and has made it clear he doesn’t endorse him.

Election officials: Illinois early voting breaks records

CHICAGO – Illinois set a record for the number of voters who went to the polls ahead of Tuesday’s presidential election – even before Monday, the last day of early voting.

Nearly 1.3 million people cast in-person early ballots through Sunday, surpassing turnout in previous presidential contests, according to totals released Monday by the State Board of Elections. Roughly 1 million people cast early in-person ballots in 2008, or about 18 percent of all votes, and nearly 1.2 million people did so in 2012, or roughly 22 percent.

The annual Illinois Report Card shows that 23.5 percent of public school teachers are absent more than 10 days in the school year, the Chicago Tribune reported. Some administrators and teachers union officials have questioned whether

Democrats have supermajorities in the Illinois Legislature – 71-47 in the House and 39-20 in the Senate – but it hasn’t been enough to overrule the governor during an epic 16-month budget standoff that’s led to funding cuts for social services and higher education.

Mayors of Chicago, Cleveland make donations

CHICAGO – The mayors of Chicago and Cleveland said they’re each donating $1,000 to youth baseball organizations in the other’s city after the World Series.

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made the announcement Sunday evening. It means that Emanuel will give $1,000 to The Historic League Park in Cleveland and Jackson will give $1,000 to the Playball initiative run by the Chicago Parks Foundation.

The two mayors didn’t make a friendly wager on this year’s World Series. Instead, both said they’re making the donations to honor the sportsmanship and spirit shown by both teams and fans.

LOS ANGELES – A gunman who killed a federal transportation security officer and wounded three other people during a rampage at Los Angeles International Airport was sentenced to life plus 60 years in prison Monday for the attack that crippled the nation’s second-busiest airport and disrupted travel nationwide.

Paul Ciancia, 26, had faced the mandatory life sentence for murdering a federal officer, but prosecutors also sought the additional 60-year term because he showed no remorse and still clings to the beliefs that led to the violence in 2013.

Addressing the court about what led up to the attack, Ciancia said that in 2012 he was sick of life and decided to kill himself.

“I knew exactly how I wanted to die. I was going to take up arms against my own government,” he said.

Police gather to mourn Des Moines sergeant

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – About 1,500 law enforcement officers joined more than 1,000 other mourners Monday at a funeral for a one of two Iowa police officers who were fatally shot just minutes apart last week.

Troves of uniformed officers slowly filed into a West Des Moines church to remember Sgt. Anthony Beminio, the 38-year-old

sergeant who was killed early Wednesday while sitting in his patrol car. His death came minutes after Officer Justin Martin was fatally shot in nearby Urbandale. An Urbandale man has been charged in both killings.

Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert told mourners about Beminio’s commitment to his job, other officers and the community. In all his interactions with co-workers and citizens, Wingert said Beminio was authentic and enthusiastic.

“Everything Tony did, he did from the heart,” Wingert said.

Philly transit strike ends, avoiding election impact

PHILADELPHIA – The city’s crippling weeklong transit strike ended early Monday, ensuring that all buses, trolleys and subways will be up and running by Election Day. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority and the union representing about 4,700 transit workers announced a tentative agreement before daybreak.

By afternoon, limited service was restored on bus and trolley routes, and operating subway trains were making all stops.

SEPTA said it usually takes 24 hours to have all buses, trolleys and subway trains running after a shutdown, but it was on track to be in full service by Tuesday morning.

That number represents about half of the nearly 45 million people who had cast votes by Monday, according to Associated Press data.

As Americans, we get to choose the person who will be the leader of the free world for the next four years. The entire world is watching this election, as it does every four years.

The race for president is important – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton have very different visions for how America should relate to its allies and neighbors, how the federal government can help grow our economy, and how it should regulate business and our society.

It’s up to us to decide what kind of country we want to live in, and what kind of state and county government we want.

The presidential race aside, there are many other important races on your ballot today. In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Republican Mark Kirk faces a strong challenge from Democrat Tammy Duckworth as the GOP nationwide fights to maintain control of the Senate.

There is a proposal to amend Illinois’ Constitution to require any money raised from transportation-related sources to be spent on transportation. In some places – but not enough – there are contested races for seats in the Illinois House and Senate.

Local candidates for county board, state’s attorney and other countywide offices also serve an important role in our communities, and it is up to us to make good choices in those races.

The Bush family insisted on running a third member for president despite plenteous signs that neither Republicans nor voters generally were hungering for another Bush presidency.

Jeb Bush had an admirable record as governor of Florida and could speak knowledgeably on foreign and military policy. But his candidacy overshadowed younger Republicans in the first half of 2015 and provided a perfect foil in the second for the insurgent Donald Trump, who ousted Bush from his poll lead within a month after his ride down the Trump Tower escalator.

In the meantime, Jeb Bush’s super PAC spent something like one-third of its $100 million on deconstructing his onetime Florida ally Marco Rubio, who might have been a much stronger nominee than Trump.

The Trump family banked on the notion that a highly publicized billionaire and reality TV star would dominate free media coverage and

shut off information about his 16 Republican opponents. A good bet.

Trump got $2 billion worth of free TV time, including full coverage of rallies and phone-in cable news interviews, to save him the trouble of traveling more than the several hundred yards from Trump Tower to networks’ Manhattan studios.

There is a royalist, rather than republican, undercurrent in all this.

“Is it nice to trace how the actions of a retired widow and an unemployed youth become of such importance?”

Walter Bagehot wrote in “The English Constitution” in 1867, referring to Queen Victoria and Edward, Prince of Wales. His point was that the public’s curiosity centered on the “dignified part” of government, while it had little interest in the personal lives of leaders of its “efficient part,” Parliament, such as William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli.

Now we have Hillary Clinton complaining about Donald Trump’s groping women and Trump complaining that Clinton trashed women assaulted by her husband, both with some basis in fact.

In the meantime, royalist politics are taking us further from Fukuyama’s Denmark. Government has been growing less competent.

Look at Obamacare, veterans hospitals and immigration authorities failing to deport some 100,000 immigrants here illegally, including some

who committed other crimes.

The rule of law is under continued attack. Hillary Clinton was not indicted in connection with violating criminal laws by setting up her private email system and repeatedly lying about it, and the Justice Department has hampered the FBI investigation into the pay-to-play operations of the Clinton Foundation.

Trump repeatedly criticized a federal judge and has called for changing libel law – i.e., for revising a 50-yearold Supreme Court interpretation of the First Amendment – so he can sue reporters who write stories he doesn’t like.

Each candidate has argued, persuasively, that the other should be disqualified from the presidency. Under a proper republican standard of accountability, both candidates would be. Unfortunately, elections are a zero-sum game; all but one candidate must lose, but one must win.

At the end of the Constitutional Convention, a bystander asked Benjamin Franklin what kind of government it would produce. “A republic, if you can keep it,” he said. We’re not doing a very good job of that this year.

How to punish Russia for meddling in the election Amid this divisive and miserable (and thankfully almost over) U.S. presidential campaign, one menacing subplot hasn’t received the kind of attention it deserves: the Russian government’s effort to disrupt the American political and electoral process.

In July, hackers dumped a trove of stolen emails from the Democratic National Committee, leading its chairwoman to resign. A few weeks later, the personal email addresses and phone numbers of almost 200 lawmakers turned up online. Last month, so did emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta.

Across the U.S., hackers have been prying into state electoral machinery, probing for weaknesses.

Added up, it all amounts to unprecedented meddling in an American election. And it all has been attributed – by analysts public and private –

to Russia. What kind of response does such audacious interference call for?

Not panic, for starters. Podesta is justifiably upset about his emails, and it’s disturbing to think that the leaks may influence voters. But no one has been killed, and democracy hasn’t been derailed. Election officials are aware of the dangers, and the potential for serious fraud is small. The republic will endure.

Further, there are some indications that the U.S. and its allies already are responding. Attributing the attacks to Russia may well be the first step toward imposing sanctions.

Last month, Vice President Joe Biden suggested that more covert efforts may be on the way.

All of which, and more, would be justified. One thing the White House should be wary of, however, is employing its own arsenal of cyberweap-

ons. Such implements are inherently unpredictable. They risk revealing capabilities that might later come in handy. And the U.S. has far more to lose from an escalating cyber conflict than does Russia. Better to use the tools – legal, diplomatic and political – that have proved effective in the past.

China offers an instructive example. After enduring years of escalating attacks against American corporations, the U.S. indicted five hackers from the Chinese military in 2014. The White House also threatened sanctions, applied diplomatic pressure and generally raised hell. Eventually, the two sides came to a much-touted agreement on the issue last year, and attacks by Chinese-linked hackers have since declined substantially.

There’s some debate over exactly how much of this reduction can be attributed to U.S. pressure. But the mes-

sage was clearly sent. Top officials on both sides now share information on cybercrime, and a “hotline” is being established to improve communication. Cheating, dissembling and assorted chicanery surely will continue.

Slowly and fitfully, however, the two countries are hashing out mutually beneficial norms of behavior in cyberspace.

The U.S. has no such understanding with Russia. Getting there will require a similar combination of threats and compromises, carrots and sticks. Russia is a much-diminished power, and its intrusions signify only weakness. But the U.S. still needs its cooperation on many issues, from space to Syria. It should make clear that interfering with an American election will have a price. But the price shouldn’t be needlessly steep.

Among the many complaints I have seen about this squalid presidential election – the most dismal choice of major-party nominees since 1856 – there’s one that I find missing: That it shows how our politics have become less republican.

That’s republican with a small r, in contrast to royalist. This is not an entirely new trend, but it is one that has reached a dismal culmination.

In his magisterial book “The Origins of Political Order,” Francis Fukuyama shows how the progress toward good government – “getting to Denmark” is his phrase – involves a change from the familial to the institutional. Progress comes when a nation has a competent state, the rule of law and public accountability.

The course of this election can be seen as more familial than institutional, with key roles played by the Clinton family, the Bush family and the Trump family.

The Clintons, by deciding that Hillary Clinton would run for president at age 69 despite possibly significant health problems, effectively foreclosed the Democratic nomination and prevented a younger generation of Democratic politicians from competing.

That gave an opening to 74-year-old self-avowed socialist Bernie Sanders, her one visible opponent, to foist a left-wing agenda on the world’s oldest political party. Sanders won all but two caucuses and held Clinton to 56

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team had a magic number this offseason.

Entering their first full offseason under second-year coach Lisa Carlsen, the Huskies were tasked with making 30,000 shots over the summer.

With the Huskies returning all five starters from last season, they have their eyes on getting out of the Mid-American Conference basement and provide a level of consistency when the season opens at Loyola at 5 p.m.

Friday in Chicago.

“I think sometimes you have to decide and dictate how much work it takes to be really good at this level and that can’t happen just at practice and it can’t happen during the season,” Carlsen said about the 30,000 makes

While the Huskies return their top six scorers from last year – with nearly 96 percent of their scoring back – they finished 11-19 overall and 4-14 in conference, which placed them sixth in the Mid-American Conference West. After finishing 7-5 in nonconference play and winning at Akron in the conference opener, the Huskies lost seven straight in January. They also lost seven of their final eight games and Carlsen said consistency will be the next step for the program.

St. Cloud State got back to .500 with a 31-0 win at Minot State on Saturday. Gary Koehring had two tackles, a tackle for a loss and a sack for the Huskies. The junior linebacker from Kaneland has 65 tackles and 1.5 sacks on the season.

While the Walsh football team has struggled to post wins this season – the Cavaliers lost 56-0 on Saturday at Ashland to move to 1-9 on the season – freshman Tony Tate continued to show his versatility.

The DeKalb product had two recep-

tions for 10 yards and two kickoff returns for 42 yards.

This year he has completed 3 of 7 passes for 20 yards, has 13 rushes for 24 yards and leads Walsh with 34 receptions for 274 yards. Tate has averaged 23.7 yards on kickoff returns and also has averaged 13 yards on punt returns which includes a 64 yard touchdown return.

••• Rivals met on the volleyball court as the Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s team took down Wisconsin-La Crosse with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

DeKalb graduate Courtney Wagner had nine kills and 10 points for the Eagles (27-6) and the junior middle hitter has 316 kills for Whitewater this season. She also has a .298 attack percentage, 12 service aces, 50 digs, 135 blocks and 404 points.

Freshman forward Isabel Pizano has scored two goals on eight shots for the North Park women’s soccer team.

Bouagnon, Radtke earn conference honors DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com Northern Illinois running back Joel Bouagnon’s big day against Bowling Green earned him some well-earned attention.

The senior had five rushing touchdowns against the Falcons and was named a Mid-American Conference West Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Bouagnon had 134 rushing yards to go with his five touchdowns in the 45-20 victory, and he shared the award with Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis, who had 12 catches for 272 yards and three touchdowns in a win over Ball State.

The five rushing touchdowns were the most since Garrett Wolf did it in 2005 and Bouagnon moved into seven place in NIU career rushing scores with 32.

VOLLEYBALL Radtke nabs conference honor: For the fifth

time this season, Northern Illinois senior Jenna Radtke was named a conference player of the week. After notching two blocks per set in a pair of wins, Radtke was named the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in 2016.

Radtke also won Offensive Player of the Week twice this season.

She had seven blocks in a win over Central Michigan and seven blocks in the victory over Eastern Michigan. The Huskies clinched their third straight MAC West title and will close out the regular season at Toledo and Ball State this weekend.

The Central College football team is off to a 7-2 start and Kaneland grad Zack Martinelli has continued to be a dynamic playmaker for the Dutch.

The senior receiver from Elburn had two receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. He also had two carries for 18 yards, three punt returns for 14 yards and a kickoff return for 11 yards.

Martinelli’s 113 all-purpose yards led the Dutch in a 49-14 win against Simpson on Saturday in Iowa.

In a 41-14 loss at Penn State on Saturday, Iowa’s starting linebacker Ben Niemann had three tackles. The junior from Sycamore has 53 tackles on the season, which is fourth on the Hawkeyes (5-4).

It was the first road loss for Iowa since a 31-18 loss at Maryland on October 18, 2014. Both Hawkeyes’ losses in 2015 came at neutral sites.

Butler, Bulls rout Magic

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jimmy Butler scored 20 points, Taj Gibson had 16 points and 11 rebounds and the Bulls routed the Orlando Magic, 112-80, on Monday night.

Dwyane Wade also scored 16 points and Doug McDermott finished with 11 for the Bulls, who had dropped three straight. Wade went 7 for 12 from the field in 25 minutes, bouncing back nicely from a dismal four-point performance in Saturday’s 111-94 loss at Indiana.

Orlando had won three straight, but it played listless defense as the Bulls pulled away in the third quarter. Aaron Gordon scored 15 points for the Magic, and Evan Fournier added 13 on 6-for-12 shooting.

Butler was a perfect 10 for 10 as the Bulls went 25 for 31 at the free-throw line, compared to 5 for 6 for the Magic. The Bulls have made at least 20 free throws in their last four games and five of their first seven.

The Bulls led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but Gordon had a cutting dunk and Fournier made a 3-pointer to help Orlando close to 63-58 in the third.

The Bulls then ripped off the next 13 points, and the Magic never threatened again. Gibson, Rajon Rondo and Robin Lopez closed the run with three straight layups, making it 76-58 with 6:05 left.

McDermott and Butler each converted a three-point play to help the Bulls to an 88-63 lead heading into the final period. The Magic shot 4 for 21 in the third and committed six turnovers in the quarter.

Isaiah Canaan scored 10 points as the Bulls picked up a little momentum heading into a difficult stretch. Eight of the Bulls’ next nine games are on the road, including Wade’s return to Miami on Thursday night after he signed with

NEW YORK – Fresh off leading the Cubs to their first World Series title in more than a century, slugger Kris Bryant and several teammates could soon be hoisting more hardware.

Bryant is among the top three vote-getters for the NL MVP award, with manager Joe Maddon and pitchers Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks in contention for other honors.

The Baseball Writers’ Association of America announced the finalists Monday. Voting was completed before the postseason, and the awards will be presented next week on MLB Network.

A season after he was the NL Rookie of the Year, Bryant hit 39 home runs with 102 RBIs while batting .292. The third baseman also scored a league-high 121 runs.

Washington second baseman Daniel Murphy, who batted .347 for the NL East champions, and Dodgers rookie shortstop Corey Seager also are up for NL MVP. been clear this season. In the only exhibition for the Huskies – a 11149 beatdown of Lakeland University (Division II) on Saturday – Voigt and Glenn each scored 21 and Lehman had 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while seven Huskies scored in double figures.

“It’s really evident in the way they can share the basketball and know where everybody’s going to be on the floor,” Carlsen said. “Your shooters are going to spot up, your post players – especially with the versatility with our post players – what they like to do when they put the ball on the floor and where you can make yourself available. I think

that all comes with time.”

With a fast-paced offense in mind, Carlsen said she wants to play around nine players consistently and expects the four freshmen to contribute. Voigt said the next step for the Huskies program is to win the MAC – Central Michigan is the unanimous preseason favorite to take the West division – and Lehman said that coming into the season, the chemistry has been off the charts.

“Everyone on the team is excited,” Lehman said. “I know everybody says this every year but for us it’s true – this is by far the best team chemistry I’ve ever had, even grade school, high school, all of the above.”

“It’s never easy. It’s disappointing to be hurt and let your teammates down,” Wilson said of another injury to recover from. “It’s just a blessing to be back on the field.”

Royal, who missed the past two games with a toe injury, said he sees a team that can make a run in the second half.

“You look around and you see so many good players, it’s like, why not win out?” he said. “You’ve got to win the first one, but we believe in each other so much that we know that we can turn this thing around.”

LAKE FOREST – The Bears were as healthy as they have been all season coming out of their Week 9 bye when they returned to Halas Hall for practice Monday.

Right guard Kyle Long, left guard Josh Sitton, nose tackle Eddie Goldman, receivers Eddie Royal and Marquess Wilson and cornerback Bryce Callahan all participated in the portion of practice open to the media – the team doesn’t have to issue an injury report until Wednesday. The only injured Bears player on the roster who remains out is CB Deiondre’ Hall — WR Kevin White and CB Kyle Fuller are on injured reserve.

“I thought with our numbers, we were like a nine-man football team

there for awhile. There weren’t many people out there. And it was clear that we’re an 11-man team today.” said Long, who missed the second half of the Packers game and the entire Vikings game with a triceps injury. “There were a lot of people out there.

Logano: He won at Talladega in the last round to stave off elimination, and he doesn’t need to win at Phoenix to make it to Homestead. He essentially is racing the Gibbs cars and trying to finish higher than the three Toyotas so he can snatch a spot on points.

It’ll be a tough battle, but Logano likes sticking it to the team that let him go three years ago.

Kurt Busch: He’s an afterthought right now after iffy performances in the past two races have him ranked last in the standings. He most certainly has to win at Phoenix to advance, and it’s a good track for Busch. He has four consecutive top-10 finishes at Phoenix and could pull off a miracle.

Should he get the win, it will come at the expense of Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Harvick. Based on the standings, they both can’t make the final four.

To say there will be some brokenhearted teams Sunday is an understatement. This year’s version of the Chase has been anticlimactic, sometimes even boring, but this bottleneck in the standings is something to behold.

Reigning series champion Kyle Busch and Joey Logano are tied in the standings. Busch teammate Matt Kenseth is just one point back, and Denny Hamlin sits two points out.

Only one of them is making it to the final four Nov. 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway if Harvick wins, and the chances of Joe Gibbs Racing getting multiple cars into the championship took a hit Sunday. The team dominated the regular season and had 50 percent of the drivers in this round of eight.

Once a threat to get all four cars into the finale, JGR is only guaranteed to be represented by Carl Edwards, who used a fast pit stop to win a rain-shortened race Sunday night at Texas. It was the least optimal outcome for JGR in terms of getting multiple cars into the finale.

Edwards, you see, was last in the

playoff standings, and that miracle win gave him an automatic berth.

Although the rules show two spots still remaining and three JGR drivers hovering at the top of the standings, the threat of a Harvick win at Phoenix has burst JGR’s hopes.

So here’s the situation: Harvick for the win: He’s an eighttime winner at Phoenix and has absolutely owned the place since the track was reconfigured in 2011. He also is in a situation that Harvick handles quite well – he pretty much has to win or won’t make it to the finale for a third straight year.

Harvick is known as a macho driver brimming with confidence, and he didn’t seem concerned about his positioning headed into Phoenix. His warning? He’ll just go to Phoenix and do what he always does there.

JGR: The team had hoped to sweep the finale but can’t because Jimmie Johnson earned one of the spots with a win at Martinsville. Best case scenario is that the team gets two more cars into the final, but that certainly will come with hard internal feelings.

24 Annual checkup can catch disease early Note to readers: This column originally ran in October 2014.

Dear Dr. K: I’m 73 and in great health. Do I really need to have an annual physical?

Dear Reader: Let’s start by defining “great health.” I would define it as having no known chronic (ongoing) illnesses. However, most people your age have at least one chronic illness, such as high blood pressure. People with chronic illnesses need to be checked out at least once a year, and usually more often.

Even if they don’t have any chronic illnesses, I ask my patients to come in for a checkup every year. That includes asking and answering some questions, a physical examination and some screening tests.

The questions probably are the most important part of an annual checkup. For example, I remember a man in his 50s who had no chronic conditions and exercised every day. He had a healthy diet – he was a vegan. When I asked him whether he had been having any bothersome symptoms, he answered “no,” but hesitated just briefly before saying it. So I pushed him: “Even a mild symptom that’s not very bothersome, but that is something new?”

He replied, “Well, sometimes I get this tingling sensation in my feet. It comes and goes.”

That gave me an idea, and influenced what I did on the physical examination.

There is not a lot of evidence a complete physical examination is valuable. In fact, an analysis of 14 trials that included more than 180,000 patients did not find a yearly general health checkup decreased the risk of death or illness.

I always examine the heart, lungs, abdomen and skin. Even this limited examination is of unproven value. But I’ve discovered irregular heart rhythms, mild asthma and the occasional skin cancer.

In my patient with the tingling sensations, I took a tuning fork and whacked it to make it vibrate. I asked him to close his eyes and to tell me when he felt the vibrations touch his skin. When I placed the tuning fork on his ankles, he said nothing.

During an annual checkup, it is important for adults to get several types of immunizations every so often and a flu shot every year.

I checked my patient’s immunization record and gave him a flu shot.

Then it was time to order tests. The screening tests I prescribe during an annual checkup didn’t turn up any problems in this person, this year, but they are effective in catching (and sometimes curing) diseases in an early stage, such as various types of cancer and heart disease.

I added a blood test for vitamin B12 to the screening tests in my patient. His symptom of tingling, his inability to feel the vibration of the tuning fork and the fact he was a vegan made me suspect his vitamin B12 levels were low – and they sure were. Fortunately, vitamin B12 pills prevented what could have been permanent damage to his spinal cord.

So, I’d advise you not to skip an annual visit to your doctor. You don’t need to have every nook and cranny of your person probed every year. But you do need certain questions asked, screening tests performed and immunizations given.

Is it wrong to drop off a 1- and a 5-year-old at a senior citizen assisted-living center for their great-grandmother to baby-sit in her room? My niece does this weekly, claiming she’s giving my mother “quality time” with her great-grandchildren.

My mother is in the assisted-living center due to issues my dad is encountering. She’s very independent and, of course, wants to help any of her family whenever she can.

But Mom has an autoimmune disease that flares up with stress or when she gets tired.

I’m concerned about her health and feel my niece is taking advantage of her. Of course, my sister sides with her daughter. They have told me to butt out.

I don’t want to confront the management of the facility because I want Mom to feel as independent as possible there. I don’t want them to not allow her to do something she really wants to do.

I have safety concerns, though, and feel this is not right. What do you think? – Torn
