iPad has proved to be a lifesaver Hannah Jo loves her iPad. She plays so many various games. Some are educational, others are just YouTube silliness. We have, however, made sure that all applications are kid-friendly.

We hemmed and hawed over giving her our old iPad, but eventually decided that her little eyes and dexterity could maneuver the programs, so why not?

Now we don’t have to share our cellphones with her anymore, so no more of her little sticky fingers making a mess of the screen while she plays “Elmo.” She would get mad when the phone rang because she had to give it back so we could talk. It’s a bonus for both of us that she has her own gadget now.

My husband and I try to give the iPad to Hannah Jo sparingly.

Usually, we use it as a reward system.

Hannah Jo will have to clean up some toys or feed the dogs before she can play with her electronics. This reward system seems to work for our family.

Frankly, however, this wonderful iPad has been more than just entertainment and a learning gadget for my daughter. For my husband and me, it has been a lifesaver.

Countless times, I have had to do something important or get a chore done. Of course, during these crucial times, Hannah Jo just wants to get into mischief. Then I get agitated and she gets agitated, and then a tantrum erupts.

But ever since the iPad came along, things have changed.

CHEEKY MAMA Becca Hirst We purposely sit Hannah Jo at her table and give her the iPad so we can get stuff squared away. We have a good half-hour before she starts to get restless. Obviously, she knows where we are and what we are doing, although she pays no attention to us. Thank GOD! Some might say we use the electronic device to baby-sit our daughter. At some point, I think any sane mother, father or caretaker has allowed their kids to watch meaningless TV or play with a computer for the sake of their sanity.

It’s a new day and age, and thank goodness it is. I often wondered what our grandparents did to care for our parents. How did they survive?

I have come to the conclusion that sometimes I need my child engaged in something so I can get stuff done. I need to stop caring if people think I am a bad mommy and embrace a system that works for us.

WASHINGTON – Call it people-to-penguin diplomacy.

In a new bid to highlight the threat of climate change, Secretary of State John Kerry will make an unusual official visit to barely populated Antarctica next week. The State Department said Friday that Kerry would travel from Nov. 10 to Nov. 12 to the McMurdo research station on Antarctica’s Ross Island and the South Pole. Kerry will be the first secretary of state and highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Antarctica.

He hopes to draw attention to the decline in polar ice and its impact on sea levels, although most of the world likely still will be fixated on the results

of Tuesday’s presidential election.

Kerry has made climate change a priority as America’s top diplomat. He led the U.S. delegation to the final negotiations over last year’s Paris climate change agreement, has attended numerous conferences on limiting greenhouse gas and carbon emissions and traveled to the Arctic Circle this spring while visiting Denmark and Greenland.

However, unlike Denmark and Greenland – which have large permanent human populations, governments, politicians and specific foreign policy positions – Antarctica is home to 1,000 people in the winter with a summer surge to 4,500 scientists and support staff, has no resident politicians and is ungoverned in the traditional sense.

Fans celebrate the Cubs’ World Series victory with parade, rally

news@daily-chronicle.com with The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – November blazed like dazzling springtime in Chicago during a massive parade and rally Friday to honor the Cubs’ first World Series title in 108 years and fulfill more than a century of pent-up dreams.

Local Cubs fans had to get an early start to be there for the parade, which began midmorning at Wrigley Field before a rally at Grant Park. DeKalb County residents waited with Cubs fans from as far away as Iowa for a Chicago-bound Metra train at the station in Elburn.

“It still hasn’t set in, especially after they almost blew it the other night,” DeKalb fan Jim Ball said. “I thought of ’69 and ’84 and ’03, and I thought, ‘Here we go again,’ but not this time.”

Ball said there was no way he could miss this celebration and that he found himself reminiscing throughout the playoff run.

“I remember when my dad took me to a game when I was 10, and it was so weird because I had only watched games on black-and-white TV,” he said.

“We got there and the field was green; the ivy was green; and the Cubs uniforms were all colored in blue. It was like the ‘Wizard of Oz’ all of a sudden. I would’ve liked to go to a World Series game, but I couldn’t afford a ticket, so this is as close as I can come. I remember sitting in the bleachers for $2.”

Fellow DeKalb resident Lori Bross had attended the last Blackhawks rally after they won the Stanley Cup in 2015, and said she couldn’t miss this one.

“We know from experience that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” she said. “We’ve got to grab the gusto while we can.”

Jeff Davis of DeKalb brought his son, Ethan, along.

“Even if Ethan had school today, I would’ve pulled him out because you can’t miss this,” Davis said. “I’m old enough that I remember suffering though 1984 and 2003 with [Steve] Bartman. When you’ve been a Cubs fan all your life and finally get there, it’s incredible. It’s still hard to believe that

Creston’s Amy Shirey wanted her 13-year-old daughter, Sky, to see history.

“This is going to be crazy chaos, but we have to be there,” she said. “I know this is something that has never really happened before, and I want my daughter to see it.”

Getting up before sunrise and driving for about two hours couldn’t have been more satisfying for Kyle Thiessen, who made the trek from Davenport, Iowa, to Elburn, along with his fiancée, Victoria Madden.

“I was born and raised a Cubs fan, so I have to be there,” he said. “This is definitely the biggest championship for the city. How can’t it be? One-hundred-and-eight years is a long time.

Sheriff eyes new fees to avoid budget cuts

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Illinois Legislature has decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, but the DeKalb County sheriff doesn’t want to see people driving around with weed.

Those in possession of small amounts of the drug could be hit with a $200 fine and have their car seized and impounded, tacking on an additional $300 administrative tow fee, under a pair of ordinances that DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott has proposed to bring in enough money to offset some planned layoffs and make roads safer.

A proposed vehicle seizure and impoundment ordinance would allow law enforcement to charge a $300 administrative fee to tow vehicles for specific criminal and traffic offenses. The administrative fee is in addition to the actual cost of towing and impounding the vehicle. It is meant to shift the burden of paying for law enforcement services from taxpayers to those involved in criminal activity, Scott said.

Another proposed ordinance would

establish a $200 fine for possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana and for possession of drug paraphernalia.

A state law passed in July made possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana a civil offense rather than a criminal offense. The ordinance would allow the county to collect fine money instead of sending it to the state, as it does now. It also would allow the sheriff’s office to seize and impound vehicles associated with those civil matters, according to county documents.

The tow ordinance is expected to bring in about $135,000 a year, while the drug ordinance would generate about $40,000. The estimated $175,000 in revenue from the ordinances would allow the sheriff’s office to keep two of the three positions slated for elimination in the county’s 2017 budget, according minutes from a County Board Law and Justice Committee meeting last month.

“This is my alternative to reducing staffing,” the sheriff said.

He said administrative tow fees are common throughout Illinois. Many municipalities established such fees af-

ter passage of a state law in 2012. However, critics of such fees claim they far exceed the actual costs of having a vehicle towed and violate of the rights of vehicle owners.

Establishing an administrative tow fee has been discussed by the County Board in the past, but didn’t get much support, said John Frieders, a District 12 Republican who is chairman of the Law and Justice Committee.

“You are kind of piling on those who are having problems,” Frieders said.

But given the circumstances, he said, it was the best option to prevent layoffs in the sheriff’s office.

“These are difficult circumstances, and this was necessary to save two positions,” he said.

He said residents can avoid the fee altogether by staying out of trouble.

Scott described it as a “user fee” designed to help defray “the costs of time, training, and labor of law enforcement” who have to deal with the crimes and traffic violations. Tow fees, he said, would be given only to those involved in criminal activity, such as driving under the influence or using a

vehicle during the commission of felony.

“If you go into a ditch in the snow – this doesn’t apply,” Scott said.

Scott also said the proposed administrative tow fee of $300 for the first offense and $500 for a subsequent offense was reasonable. He said other municipalities charge $500 fees for the first offense.

DeKalb enacted a $500 administrative tow fee in 2012. Sycamore approved a $500 administrative tow fee earlier this year.

Scott proposed the ordinances in response to a draft 2017 county budget that called for his office to cut costs by $275,000, which would equal about three officer positions. Scott said he will, reluctantly, eliminate one patrol deputy position from the traffic unit.

But the new ordinances would generate enough revenue to fund the other two positions while still meeting cost reduction goals, according to meeting records.

The County Board is expected to vote on the ordinances and Scott’s budget plan later this month.

SYCAMORE – Make a Difference DeKalb County is seeking volunteers for its seventh annual MobilePack event donating packaged meals to Feed My Starving Children.

Heidi Wright, an organizer for the event, said 5,000 volunteers are needed over the four days of meal packing to reach this year’s goal of 1.2 million meals. Volunteers can register at www.makeadifferencedkc.org.

“We have increased our goal from 1 million meals because of Hurricane Matthew and the devastation it has caused in Haiti,” Wright said.

“Families have lost everything and are in tremendous need.”

Wright also is vice president of sales and marketing for The Suter Co., which makes prepared food products and hosts the event each year.

The event will run Nov. 10 through 13 at The Suter Co., 1015 W. Bethany Road in Sycamore. Volunteers are asked to work two-hour shifts.

DeKalb teen charged as adult in guns theft

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb man faces felony charges in connection with the theft of three handguns from a car in Cortland in February.

Xavier M. Fuentes Salinas, 18, of the 600 block of South First Street, was charged with burglary, aggravated possession of stolen firearms and three counts of possession of a stolen firearm.

The most serious charge, aggravated possession of stolen firearms, is a Class 1 felony typically punishable by a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.

Fuentes Salinas initially was charged as a juvenile, but the case was moved to adult court Thursday, according to court records and prosecutors.

A Cortland man reported Feb. 28 that three handguns, about 100 rounds of ammunition and a large amount of loose change had been Xavier M. stolen from a Mazda Fuentes parked in his driveway. A few days later, DeKalb school district resource officers learned that two DeKalb High School students had information

related to the thefts. The students told police that Fuentes Salinas had shown them photos of himself with guns, according to a police synopsis included in court documents.

When questioned at school, Fuentes Salinas said the gun belonged to his stepfather. Police obtained a search warrant for his phone, which they said had photographs of Fuentes Salinas with guns.

Police said they also found text messages connecting him to the car burglary.

At a hearing Friday, Assistant State’s Attorney David Weichel asked Judge Philip Montgomery to set bond at $100,000. Weichel noted the seriousness

of the charges and the recent gun violence in DeKalb.

Montgomery pointed out that Fuentes Salinas had lived in the area for more than year, was working toward his GED and that his juvenile criminal record was “limited at best.” The judge ordered him to be released on a $5,000 recognizance bond, but required that he remain on electronic home monitoring.

The judge also noted that Fuentes Salinas had been on electronic home monitoring for more than 200 days without a violation.

Fuentes Salinas is next due in court Nov. 30.

Judge: Sycamore police stop was unconstitutional in prostitution sting

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge ruled Friday that Sycamore police improperly detained a federal postal inspector outside a massage parlor in June 2015, and tossed out any evidence obtained from the traffic stop.

Dean Kowalefski, 51, of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was charged in June 2015 with soliciting a prostitute after police said employees at Spa One in Sycamore identified him in a photograph and said he gave a spa employee money in exchange for a sex act. Kowalefski had argued in July that police performed an unlawful search and seizure and arrested him without a valid warrant while he was not committing a crime.

Judge Philip Montgomery said that the police held Kowalefski for 62 minutes at the scene of a traffic stop for failure to signal. At a hearing in July, officers testified that a traffic stop typically takes 10 to 12 minutes.

“The courts have consistently held

that the reasonableness of a traffic stop is determined by its duration,” the judge said. “... Although police are allowed to conduct an unrelated investigation, as is the case here, they are not allowed to prolong it past the time reasonably required to complete the writing of the ticket. In this case, clearly police kept the defendant at the scene longer than was reasonably required to complete the writing of the ticket without probable cause to arrest the defendant for a criminal offense.”

The judge said any evidence gathered at the scene of the stop after 10 to 12 minutes would be suppressed. That includes a picture of Kowalefski and the information that Kowalefski told police about how he found the massage parlor.

At the July hearing, Sycamore police officer Stacy Binkowski and Police Chief Glenn Theriault testified about Kowalefski’s arrest. After being pulled over, Kowalefski handed police his federal ID and asked the Sycamore officers to do him a “professional courtesy,” Theriault said.

BRIEFS KINGSTON – Crime Stoppers is seeking information regarding two daytime burglaries in Kingston that police think could be connected.

A burglar Oct. 20 entered a home in the 7100 block of Snake Road through a broken window and stole a MacBook Air laptop computer, an iPhone, wallet, jewelry and loose change, according to a Crime Stoppers news release.

Two days later, a resident on the same block reported an attempted burglary in which a window was pried open and damaged, but no one entered the home, the release said.

A suspicious vehicle seen Oct. 18 in the area of Glidden Road and Route 72 might be connected with the burglaries, according to the release. The vehicle is an early 2000s white Ford F-150 pickup with flared sides.

DeKALB – A cooking fire in the Amber Manor apartment complex forced residents of an apartment to find another place to stay Thursday.

DeKalb firefighters were called at 9:14 p.m. Thursday to the building at 919 Ridge Drive and arrived to find smoke coming from an apartment on the third floor, according to a fire department news release.

A cooking fire was left unattended and had spread from the stove into the cabinets above, fire officials said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in about five minutes using a pump can, then opened windows to release smoke and fire gases that had built up inside the unit, officials said.

Northern Illinois University officials helped the apartment occupants with temporary housing, the release said.

Firefighters were on the scene for more than four hours to await assistance from utility crews and help with temporary living arrangements.

The fire caused about $11,000 damage, fire officials said.

BRIEFS DeKalb woman faces DUI, child endangerment charges

DeKALB – A DeKalb woman faces criminal charges after she was reported passed out and parked in the middle of the road Thursday with a 4-year-girl in the car, authorities said.

Amber A. Shields, 28, of the 1500 block of Rogers Court, was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and endangering the life of a child, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies were called after a vehicle was spotted parked in the middle of the road. When deputies checked on the vehicle, a passer-by reported that the driver was passed out in the front seat and had woken up and headed west on Route 38, the news release said.

Deputies said they located the vehicle about 8:52 p.m. at the Mobil gas station at 1740 E. Lincoln Highway, DeKalb.

After an investigation, deputies found that Shields was driving under the influence of drugs, the release said. Because a 4-year-old girl was in the car, Shields also was charged with endangering the life of a child, according to the release.

She was released with a notice to appear in court, the news release said.

The DeKalb County Health Department is launching its “Get Four for Flu” prevention campaign that emphasizes the importance of flu vaccination.

According to Lisa Gonzalez, public health administrator, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an annual flu vaccination as the single best way to protect against influenza.

The “Get Four for Flu” campaign is to note that the health department is providing the flu vaccine with protection against four different flu strains (quadrivalent), which adds an additional B strain.

The health department has walk-in flu clinics for adults and children Monday through Friday from 8:30 to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. For flu vaccine information, visit health.dekalbcounty.org. For current updates, call the Flu Hotline at 815-748-2410 (English) or 815-748-2425 (Spanish).

At Senate debate, Kirk says he’s ‘not a racist’

CHICAGO – Making a final pitch to keep his U.S. Senate seat, Republican Mark Kirk kicked off a debate with Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth by again apologizing for mocking her immigrant background and her family’s military service. He later added, “I am absolutely not a racist.”

Duckworth entered Friday night’s debate at ABC7 as the favorite in a contest that will help determine if Democrats retake control of the Senate.

Illinois historically has favored Democrats for statewide office, especially in presidential election years, and Duckworth has a healthy lead in the polls.

Kirk and Duckworth also tangled over issues such as immigration. And the candidates, who are both disabled, assured voters that they’re capable of serving as Illinois’ next U.S. senator.

Here’s a look at some of their exchanges:

Police investigate mailer depicting state lawmaker naked

SPRINGFIELD – Authorities are investigating who’s responsible for a mailer showing an altered picture of a female Illinois state lawmaker that depicts her in the nude.

The image of GOP state Rep. Avery Bourne was sent to people in central Illinois, The State Journal-Register and WTAX radio in Springfield reported.

It has a picture of her face added onto an image of a naked woman.

Bourne’s Democratic opponent in her re-election bid, Mike Mathis, denounced the mailer, calling it offensive and saying it “goes beyond a late campaign

Christian County Sheriff Bruce Kettelkamp said Thursday he received a couple of calls from people who had received the mailer. Authorities did not say how many mailers were sent out. Illinois State Police opened a criminal investigation.

State warns drivers to watch out for deer on roadways

SPRINGFIELD – It’s that time of year when drivers need to keep an eye out for deer on roadways.

The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Department of Natural Resources are warning motorists that November is the highest-risk month for crashes involving deer. That’s because fall is mating season.

There’s increased deer movement – especially at dawn and dusk.

There were nearly 16,000 vehicle-deer crashes last year in Illinois, with almost half

Jury convicts Illinois man for 2nd time in horse farm slaying

JOLIET – A jury has convicted a northeastern Illinois man for a second time in the stabbing death of his former boss at a horse farm in 2007.

The Herald-News reported that 31-year-old Martin Gomez again represented himself and argued there was no physical evidence linking him to the slaying of 58-year-old Joseph Salamie. Prosecutors said Salamie was slashed and stabbed 111 times.

Gomez told the jury it was “coincidence that this was happening while I was driving through the area.” Jurors convicted him Thursday.

Prosecutors said the St. Anne man used stolen, bloody money to buy drugs. Salamie’s body was found in a ditch near his Peotone farm.

Gomez was convicted of murder in 2011, but an appeals court decided he had not been given the proper warnings about representing himself.

NTSB: Failed airline engine disk had fatigue cracking

WASHINGTON – An engine disk that broke apart and forced an American Airlines jet to abort a takeoff in Chicago last week shows signs of fatigue cracking, according to a preliminary report released Friday by accident investigators.

A high-pressure turbine disk in the Boeing 767’s right engine broke into four pieces, which shot out of the engine’s housing. Investigators have recovered about 90 percent of the disk, and an examination shows

evidence of an anomaly where the fatigue cracking begins, the National Transportation Safety Board report said.

Metallurgical examinations of the disk are underway to determine what caused the cracking, the report said. The anomaly was inside the disk, rather than on its surface, where it would be visible. Such anomalies usually are the result of a manufacturing defect.

Disk pieces were spewed up to a half mile away and a fierce fire enveloped the right side of the plane after the failure. The plane was traveling at 154 mph and was seconds from lifting off from O’Hare International Airport for Miami when pilots slammed the brakes.

All 161 passengers and nine crew on American Airlines Flight 383 were evacuated.

Twenty-one people suffered injuries, mainly from the evacuation down inflated ramps.

TRENTON, N.J. – Federal regulators have found numerous safety violations on the state’s troubled commuter rail system, including the lack of on-board emergency tools and working fire extinguishers, trains stopping too close to each other and workers using cellphones when they shouldn’t have.

New Jersey Transit Executive Director Steve Santoro disclosed the findings Friday to a panel of state lawmakers investigating the agency after a fatal train crash in Hoboken in September.

Undecideds: They’re out there, and very conflicted

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – After all the sound, fury, fact, fallacy, bluster and blarney of the 2016 presidential campaign, there still are undecided voters out there.

Really.

And they’re not just people who’ve buried their heads in the sand.

Some thoughtful people just do not know what to do with the choices they’ve been given, yet are determined to exercise their right to vote.

“I’m just really trying to completely think this through,” said Peter Schroeder, a fulltime student and tech startup worker in Erie, Pennsylvania.

“I have a mail-in ballot, and I change my mind every day about what I should do,” said Lori Perez, a stay-at-home mom in Lehi, Utah.

“Let me have a moment of silence to think about this, OK?” asked Moshe Sherizen, a digital marketer from Southfield, Michigan.

Polls suggest the undecideds make up a small slice of the electorate – perhaps just 2 percent at this late date.

The campaigns have largely them written off, placing their emphasis instead on boosting turnout among the much larger bloc of voters they’ve already identified as supporters.

But in a close race, the undecideds still could be decisive, especially since pollsters said they’re more likely to cast ballots if they live in competitive states than in noncompetitive ones.

Spend some time talking to undecided voters, and a clear theme of dissatisfaction quickly emerges.

“It’s not a choice between two goods,” said Democratic pollster Peter Hart, who conducts focus groups. “It’s a choice between two deplorables, from their point of view.”

Texan Danielle Inman, who works for a

cellular provider, showed the conflicting emotions that are roiling undecided voters, who can talk themselves in and out of multiple candidates in a single conversation.

In a 10-minute chat, the 47-year-old single mother from Plano said Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton would “screw things up equally – just in different ways.” She said there’s “no way in hell” she’d vote for Trump. She said the third-party candidates don’t have a chance of winning, so she’ll definitely pick a major-party candidate.

That leaves Clinton. But she’s not sure she can vote for her. And maybe she can vote third-party after all.

So she’ll be “praying very heavily on my drive to my polling place” for the right answer.

Pennsylvania millennial Schroeder said he’s been to a Trump rally but has gotten most of his information about the campaign from friends and family who depict the Republican as a “dirty, nasty scathing type of person” and Clinton as “a hero who is straight as an arrow.” But he’s also heard people criticize Clinton’s secret email server and call her a “felon.”

“I’m just stuck in the middle,” said Schroeder, 23. “I don’t know what I’m looking for.”

Beth Keehn, a 39-year-old medical center marketing official from Columbus Grove, Ohio, said she has voted Republican since age 18 but Trump appalls her and Clinton is too liberal.

“While I’d love to see a woman in the White House, I don’t agree with the policies,” she said of Clinton. Keehn feels a tug to vote for a third-party candidate but “the fear is that if you don’t vote for Clinton, you’re just giving a vote to Trump. But I do feel like if we do that forever, we’ll never have the opportunity to have a third-party voice.”

Questions on Christie role after ex-allies’ convictions

The Associated Press NEWARK, N.J. –Two former aides to Republican Gov. Chris Christie were convicted Friday of causing epic traffic jams for political revenge near the nation’s busiest bridge, a verdict that further damages Christie’s legacy and raises anew questions about why he and his inner circle escaped prosecution.

Bridget Kelly, Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, and Bill Baroni, Christie’s appointee to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, were found guilty of all counts against them. Kelly cried as the verdict was Bridget Kelly read; Baroni showed no emotion. They announced plans to appeal.

The verdict also had ramifications on the presidential campaign trail, where Christie became an adviser to Republican Donald Trump after his own campaign collapsed, in part because of the bridge case. Before the verdict was issued, Trump’s campaign had announced Christie would stump for him Saturday in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, but later said he would not be on the trail Saturday.

Testimony during the seven-week trial contradicted Christie’s statements about when he knew about the four days of gridlock at the base of the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee in September 2013. The traffic jams were aimed at retaliating against Democratic Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for not endorsing Christie’s re-election, prosecutors alleged.

Other testimony described some of Christie’s top advisers and confidants knowing about the plan ahead of time or soon afterward and being aware of

the political motivation well before Christie told reporters in December 2013 that none of his staff was involved.

Baroni’s attorney, Michael Baldassare, called the case “a disgrace” and said the U.S. attorney’s office should be “ashamed” of where it drew the line on who to charge.

“They should have had belief in their own case to charge powerful people, and they did not,” Baldassare said.

Baroni and Kelly were indicted last year. Also charged was former Port Authority official David Wildstein, who pleaded guilty and testified against them.

U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman declined to say whether any of the testimony could lead to Bill Baroni charges against Christie or others. He said prosecutors only charged people where they had “evidence beyond a reasonable doubt” to convict.

Christie said the verdict affirmed his decision to terminate Baroni and Kelly and the jury held them responsible “for their own conduct.” He repeated his assertions he had no knowledge of the plot and said he would “set the record straight” soon about “the lies told by the media and in the courtroom.”

“I had no knowledge prior to or during these lane realignments and had no role in authorizing them,” Christie said. “No believable evidence was presented to contradict that fact. Anything said to the contrary over the past six weeks in court is simply untrue.”

At the time the scandal unfolded, Christie was considered a top presidential contender and was on the verge of a runaway re-election victory to demonstrate his crossover appeal.

Christie ultimately dropped out of the presidential race after a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A woman who was “chained up like a dog” for weeks in a dark storage container was lured to her captor’s South Carolina property for a cleaning job, a family friend said Friday as search teams digging up the area found one body and looked for more.

Authorities were “trying to make sure that we don’t have a serial killer on our hands,” the sheriff said. Investigators were told the property could hold as many as three other corpses.

Prosecutor Barry Barnette said the woman saw her captor shoot and kill her boyfriend, who went with her to the job. The body discovered Friday was not immediately identified.

The couple disappeared around Aug. 31 when they went to do the work on the suspect’s nearly 100-acre property in a rural area near the community of Woodruff, said Daniel Herren, a friend who sat with her in her hospital room after she was rescued Thursday.

“They were going to do some work, help cleaning up the property. And he pulled out a gun and took them hostage,” Herren said, adding that the abduction happened quickly.

Todd Christopher Kohlhepp, a 45-year-old registered sex offender with a previous kidnapping conviction as a teenager in Arizona, appeared at a bond hearing Friday in Spartanburg on a kidnapping charge. More charges will be filed later, the prosecutor told the court.

The judge did not set bond and instead referred the matter to circuit court. The suspect did not appear to have an attorney, and the judge urged him to get one.

The search of his property was unfolding as more details of the suspect’s violent past emerged, including an Arizona judge noting in 1987 that he had displayed aggressive behavior and sexual preoccupation since he was a child – behavior the judge expected to continue.

The Associated Press is not naming the woman because the suspect is a sex offender, though authorities have not said whether she was sexually assaulted. Her boyfriend was identified as 32-year-old Charles Carver.

Herren, who visited her in the hospital and had dinner with her Thursday, said he did not ask the woman if she was sexually assaulted.

But she did describe to him the details of her captivity, telling him she was in the container nearly the entire time except for when she was taken out for occasional walks.

“He never took the chain off of her, but he was taking her around, let her get, not so much exercise, but let her walk around some,” Herren said. “It didn’t sound like it was every day. It was kind of sporadic.”

She was fed once a day about 6 p.m.

She “didn’t tell us exactly what she was eating. But from what I gathered, it could have been fast food. ... It wasn’t like he was keeping her alive on bread and water. He was in a weird, sick kind of way being, I guess, kind of humane, as far as feeding her,” Herren said.

Election to be mandate on Schmack’s performance

To the Editor: As one of his first acts as state’s attorney, Richard Schmack hired his son to work in his office. This took some doing on his part. He had to create a new position and request that the County Board fund it. It is unclear whether members of the board knew they were engaging in blatant nepotism when they approved Schmack’s request. Regardless, they approved it, and a politician’s son had the good fortune of getting a paycheck from the taxpayer.

Had Schmack been a CEO of a family business, this hire would not have raised an eyebrow. Most private businesses employ family members as a matter of right.

It is one of the rewards of free enterprise.

Most importantly, it is private money that pays the family employee. This is commonplace in the millions of family-run businesses across our country.

But Schmack is not a CEO of a family business. He is an elected official. His duty is to the public, to the taxpayer.

Great trust was placed in him to make decisions as our state’s attorney that further the public interest. By hiring his son, without a public posting of the job, without an interview process, without complete transparency, he violated that trust. Our state is nearly bankrupt because of this politics of personal enrichment.

His actions have torn a hole in the morale of his office. And the result has been telling. There has been a 50 percent turnover in the state’s attorney’s office since January. And this is at a time when law enforcement is working diligently to solve a recent tragic double murder here in Sycamore.

This election will rightly be a mandate on Richard Schmack’s performance as our state’s attorney. The fact that his opponent, Rick Amato, has the overwhelming support of law enforcement I think gives us our answer.

Kennedy gave at the Egyptian Theater in the fall of 1959, last week many of us attended there an evening of remembrances where we listened to a restored recording of the speech, followed by an entertaining history of Kennedy’s life and death.

We were reminded of the many books Kennedy had written, including “Profiles in Courage,” a book that I read when I was in grade school. It is the perfect read for young people because it offers much-needed ethical guidance in a straightforward but dramatic style, presenting a series of moments in American history where an individual stood alone and did the right thing.

Richard Schmack, a thoughtful man and our DeKalb County state’s attorney, was forced to do just that. When confronted with ignored evidence and a rush to judgment in the Maria Ridulph case, he had no other choice as a man of the law, but to present his findings to a court that corroborated and released the accused.

We all want justice for this horrific crime. We all want someone to pay for such a senseless killing, but our legal system, which benefits us all, says that we are innocent until proven guilty – still a novel idea for many dictatorships around

the world.

Richard Schmack is the kind of public prosecutor who brings to trial cases with verifiable proof of guilt, saving the taxpayers thousand of dollars. I urge all registered voters to re-elect him Nov. 8.

Amato can better manage state’s attorney’s office

To the Editor: In my four years as a member of the DeKalb County Board representing District 1, I would characterize myself as “nonpolitical.”

I only want good government and do not care about political party representation. I am a Republican, but the success of our County Board the last two years has been a bipartisan effort.

I generally will sit and watch the election process and limit my involvement to the yard sign or two I might put up.

But with that said, I have read with great interest a few letters supporting Richard Schmack for DeKalb County state’s attorney and felt a need to respond.

I have a yard sign for Rick Amato in my yard and strongly support Rick for state’s

attorney.

I agree that honor, integrity and wisdom are important traits for the state’s attorney. Rick has all those traits to the highest degree.

Rick has the support of law enforcement and has experience in running a law office and managing people. Our current state’s attorney’s office has had more than half of its employees leave since January.

That signals a problem to me. As a County Board member, we are responsible for the county budget. I remember a budget appeal from the state’s attorney a few years ago asking for more money to hire two-part time clerical workers in his office. This request was granted, and I was dismayed only to find out later that one full-time family member was hired instead of two part-time people.

While this was not illegal, it is certainly unethical, in my opinion. That situation has since been corrected, but never should have happened in the first place.

Rick Amato has all the qualities to be an excellent state’s attorney for DeKalb County. Please support him.

The presidency isn’t the only choice next week. There are more issues than “Who’s worse, Trump or Clinton?”

Other important things are on the ballot.

Congressional elections may determine whether Obamacare lives or dies.

Electionbettingodds.com currently says Republicans will hold the House but lose the Senate. But it’s close.

And politicians aren’t the whole story.

In Kansas and Indiana, voters will decide whether the “right to hunt and fish” should be protected by their state constitutions. Advocates say such a right is needed because zealots will keep inventing “endangered” species and new gun restrictions until most hunting and fishing is impossible.

For similar reasons, Oklahoma voters will vote on a ballot measure guaranteeing a “right to farm.”

Several states will allow voters to punish their neighbors Tuesday by imposing “sin” taxes. Politicians like taxing “sin” because it gives them money while letting them claim that they discourage

So, four states offer ballot measures that would raise tobacco taxes.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Jersey vote on whether to expand legal gambling, but only state-run gambling. In Rhode Island, 61 percent of the revenue will be kept by the state.

State-run gambling is always a bad bet, but government will really screw you in Rhode Island.

Californians will vote on expansion of a counterproductive rule: a ban on plastic bags. Its supporters say it reduces litter and protects oceans and wildlife.

As usual, the zealots ignore science, convenience and health.

I would not vote for Trump if ...

To the Editor: Reasons I would not vote for Trump: If he had put our nation’s security at risk, I would not vote for him.

If his foundation received large donations from countries that kill women and gays, I would not vote for him.

If he boasted 30 years of government experience, but still could not tell if an email was classified or not, I would not vote for him.

If he boasted about defending children his whole life, but is for abortion, even lateterm abortion, I would not vote for him.

If he had denied more than 600 documented times requests for security help that never came in Benghazi and then lied to the faces of the parents as they stood by their child’s caskets and then later called them liars, I would not vote for him.

If he had deliberately destroyed 300,000 emails along with cellphones and laptops, after being subpoenaed to turn them over, which is an imprisonable offense up to three years under federal law, I would not vote for him.

But right now, the only person who has done all these things and more is Hillary Clinton, and that is why I am voting for Donald Trump.

Please, on voting, remember Benghazi.

Miller, McCarty help power G-K

ecarifio@shawmedia.com GENOA – After falling behind for the first time in the game in the fourth quarter, it took a couple of unconventional touchdowns from Zach Miller to get the Genoa-Kingston football team back in front for good.

The senior wide receiver threw and ran for fourth-quarter scores as the No. 3 Cogs stayed undefeated and beat No. 6 Rockford Lutheran, 34-25, in the second round of the Class 4A football playoffs Friday night.

“My teammates give me a chance to do whatever I can on the field,” Miller said. “The coaches have faith in me, and I take that for everything I can get.”

The Cogs (11-0), having beaten the Crusaders (8-3), 32-30, earlier in the year, scored touchdowns on their first two possessions. But the Crusaders took the lead at 25-21 when quarterback Peyton Womack ran in from 8 yards out early in the fourth.

Genoa-Kingston started its next possession with a false start, but quarterback Zach Butler found Miller on a screen for 2 yards. On the next play, the Cogs ran

the play to the opposite side, but this time Miller squared up to pass, hitting a wideopen Justin McNeal for a 69-yard scoring pass and a 28-25 lead.

“The kid’s an athlete,” G-K coach Bill McCarty said. “He’s one of the best athletes I coached. He shows it when he’s in the gym on the basketball floor, and he didn’t even play his freshman year for us.

He’s come out and is one of those athletes can get a lot of things done. You ask him and he gets it done.”

The Cog defense, which had struggled in the third quarter after a strong first half, clamped back down. A couple of penalties on the Crusaders also helped Genoa-Kingston, but Trey McCarty came up with his fifth sack of the day on a third and 13, forcing a punt.

G-K took over with 8:07 left, and mounted a four-minute scoring drive – capped on a 25-yard end around by Miller on third and 10. Butler faked the handoff to Aidan Simmons on the play, and Miller sped the whole way without contact until the goal line to go up 34-25.

“We were behind, but our heart – we kept going,” Trey McCarty said. “We wanted it.”

The Cogs started the second half up

21-10 and mounted a 5:36 drive, but didn’t score. Lutheran answered with a scoring drive that was kept alive by a run by Womack on a fake punt on fourth and 10 on which McCarty had him wrapped up in the backfield. They converted the touchdown on a third and 26 from the 32 when Womack found Dylan O’Donnell on a streak, cutting the lead to 21-18 with 2:47 left.

“We just had to flush it away,” Trey McCarty said. “We can’t think about what just happened.”

Womack ran for 63 yards on 24 carries and had a hand in all three touchdowns for the Crusaders, whose losses this year have all come to teams that are undefeated. He threw for 146 yards.

“He got through a couple times because he’s a real good player, but our defense held down like the last couple games,” Trey McCarty said.

Butler was 9 for 12 for 160 yards and a touchdown, and also threw his first interception of the year. Miller had seven catches for 120 yards but also lost a fumble after a reception, in the second quarter. Aidan Simmons had 16 carries for 69 yards, while Dan Guardi had four runs for 55 yards – going for 48 on his first run

of the game.

The Cogs scored touchdowns on their first two possessions, the first when Butler found Miller on a third and goal from the 2, then after a three-and-out Butler sneaked in from1 out.

After a long Crusader drive tied the game, the Cogs committed turnovers on their next two possessions – including Butler’s first interception of the year that led to a 31-yard field goal by Jon Anderson that cut the Cogs’ lead to 14-10.

But the Cogs held after a fumble by Miller after a catch on his own 19, and McCarty ended the Crusaders’ drive with a sack of Womack on third and 14. G-K took over in the closing minutes of the second quarter, and drove quickly for a score, capped by Aidan Simmons’ 2-yard run that pushed the lead to 21-10.

The Cogs will travel to No. 2 Johnsburg at 7 p.m. Friday for their first quarterfinal berth since 1988.

“They practice hard and they focus hard,” Bill McCarty said of his Cogs. “We kind of had a goal that we could make it to the quarterfinals. ... That’s one goal they had, but we’ve been focusing on taking it one game at a time, and that’s still what you do.”

The Sequoits run a Wing-T offense and don’t throw much – quarterback Brandon Gallimore has 376 passing yards and seven touchdowns. But they run well, led by Hunter Price (102 carries, 778 yards, eight touchdowns) and Lind (91-670-21). Gallimore has 476 yards on the ground, and Drew Porter has 88

carries for 396 yards and six scores.

The Barbs saw a similar offensive scheme in Week 2 against Carmel and won, 38-10. The Corsairs finished the season 5-5 after an overtime playoff loss at St. Charles North last week.

“We wanted to get our team prepared for all different type of offenses,” Weckler said. “We scheduled some really good teams that showed us a lot of looks that will prepare us for playoff teams.”

DeKalb linebacker Ben Roelfsema said that experience is very helpful.

“We have to play low, play fast, know our roles,” Roelfsema said.

“They have some good backs. Everyone has to do their job and we’ll be fine.”

The Barbs went three rounds deep in the postseason last year, and Kyler said the goal is to get at least that far this year.

“The goal is definitely a state championship, and at least as far as we’ve gone last year,” Kyler said. “We want to get better and better every year, and I want to leave the program better than I found it. That’s one of the things coach Weckler always says and that’s what we want to do.”

Kyler isn’t alone in thinking DeKalb can win a state title – Glashagel concurs.

“I think they’re a state championship-caliber team,” Glashagel said.

“Not that we’re not, but that’s a team you look at, and they’ve got all the pieces. Offense, defense and special teams.

“We know we’re going to have our hands full against these guys.”

DeKALB – The Antioch football team was a yard away from seeing its perfect season end early last week.

The No. 2 Sequoits turned it around with a fumble recovery, a 96-yard run and a two-point conversion, to stun No. 15 Wauconda, 29-28, in the first round of the IHSA Class 6A football playoffs. Antioch will host No. 7 DeKalb at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Antioch coach Brian Glashagel said he hopes his team learned its lesson about slow starts – the team trailed 2814 in the third quarter.

“I told the kids we came back from the dead,” Glashagel said. “We were done, it was over. We came out flat. I think the kids thought it was business as usual. ‘Oh, here’s a conference opponent we’ve beaten before.’

“Wauconda played hard, we didn’t, and in the blink of an eye we were down. If we do that against DeKalb, we’ll not only lose, but we’ll lose ugly.”

Glashagel called Barbs quarterback Derek Kyler and receiver Cole Tucker one-of-a-kind players. The game will be a strength vs. strength matchup: DeKalb (8-2) is averaging 38 points a game, while the Sequoits are allowing 17.3 a game. Kyler is creeping up on 2,000 yards passing – he has 1,644 with 21 touchdowns and five interceptions this year. Tucker has 45 catches for 671 yards and 10 touchdowns – plus he scored on a kickoff return against Marmion.

“By the time you get to this round, the second round, pretty much every team is pretty good,” Glashagel said.

“We’ve watched a lot of DeKalb film, and man are they loaded. That’s a good team. That quarterback is a special player. He’s the type of kid you only see once or twice.”

“They can score in five seconds,” he said. “That receiver, (Tucker), again, you watch him and go ‘What a great player.’ And he’s an explosive kick returner. He’s dynamic. So you’ve got a few guys on that side of the ball that can put up some points. It’s a special group on offense.”

The Sequoits showed the ability to score fast against Wauconda. They forced a fumble on fourth-and-goal from the 1 – a score would have put Wauconda ahead by two touchdowns – then got a 96-yard run from Brandon Lind to tie the game. They went for two and got it in the closing two minutes.

Wauconda is one three playoff teams the Sequoits faced this year.

They beat the Bulldogs (5-5) 33-29 in Week 3 before the thriller last week.

Sycamore, Rochelle meet 2 weeks after playoff-clinching win

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Facing Rochelle in Week 9, the Sycamore football team needed a win to keep its season from ending.

The Spartans pulled it off with a 35-21 win, reaching the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year and making possible Saturday’s matchup between No. 13 Sycamore and the No. 12 Hubs in the second round of the IHSA Class 5A football playoffs in Rochelle.

The winner will advance to face No. 1 Sterling or No. 9 Rich Central and the loser has its season come to an end.

“Obviously, we beat them two weeks ago, but they’re going to want that revenge like every team talks about when they get beat by someone,” Sycamore quarterback Ty Sulaver said. “We’re going to have to take it to them right away.

They’re going to come out strong and we need to match that intensity.”

The Spartans allowed the first touchdown in the last meeting, but answered back to tie, then got an interception return for a touchdown from Austin Perry to take the lead. They added another touchdown and the led the rest of the way.

The Spartans only had one run of more than 20 yards – a 26-yard dash by Sulaver, who led Sycamore with 107 on the ground – but three of their five completions were more than 20 yards.

“We have to not give up all the big plays,” Rochelle coach Kevin Crandall said. “They had four or five plays of over 20 yards. Those are big. We have to eliminate those.”

The Hubs (6-4) won, 56-14, in their playoff opener at No. 5 Ridgewood, while the Spartans were 42-21 winners at No. 4 Chicago Solorio Academy.

Against the Rebels, Rochelle running back Matt Albers crossed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season, gaining 169 yards on 26 carries and scor-

ing twice. He was kept out of the end zone against the Spartans, but had 123 yards on 20 carries. Ehren Metzger also crossed the 100-yard mark against the Spartans, rushing 20 times for 144 yards.

“There’s not a lot of secrets,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “I know Coach Crandall well enough and he’d say the same thing. It’s not that we’re trying to fool anybody at this point. It’s about how our kids do things. And if we do it better, we’ll move on.”

One of the first-quarter touchdowns for the Spartans against the Hubs came from Payton Wiegmann, who turned a short screen into a 27-yard touchdown catch. It was his fifth game filling in for injured starting running back Chris Pawola, and his first touchdown catch.

Against the Sun Warriors, Wiegmann caught two more touchdown passes. All three of his receptions this year are for scores.

“When he’s open he’s open, and he does what he needs to do,” Sulaver said.

“It’s always awesome cause it looks good for me too.”

Ryan said being able to pass to a running back adds another dimension to the Sycamore offense, which averages 27.9 points a game.

“He can catch the ball really well, and that’s a nice advantage coming out of the backfield,” Ryan said. “Chris could too, so that’s always helped our offense.”

The Hubs are averaging 27.5 – although last week was their first game with more than three touchdowns since a 31-0 Week 6 win against Geneseo. The Hubs are allowing 17.8 points per game, the Spartans 20.3.

The Spartans, who started the season 1-3 but have won five of six since, are looking to keep the season going for one more week.

a third-place finish at the Belvidere Sectional, but will be without star junior Stephen Poorten. After finishing fourth at the sectional meet, Poorten (15:08) was diagnosed with a stress fracture and will miss the final race of the season. He had run a season-best time of 14:54 at the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional and took 12th at state last season as a sophomore.

“If there’s any silver lining, it’s that he isn’t a senior,” Sycamore coach Mike Lambin said. “Stephen is one of the most ferocious competitors I’ve ever been around. I know he’d sacrifice anything to be out there.”

During that Belvidere Sectional, Richtman (15:04) finished just ahead of Poorten. Last season, Richtman finished 18th in the state meet as a sophomore.

The Kaneland girls have been led

by freshman Rachel Richtman, who finished third (17:46) in the Class 2A Burlington Central Regional and was seventh (18:07) in the Class 2A Belvidere North Sectional.

As a team, the Knights took third at Burlington Central and fourth at Belvidere North to advance.

For Audrey Harrod, who is making her second consecutive appearance at the state meet, she won the Class 1A Peru St. Bede Regional (19:25) and was 11th in the Class 1A Oregon Sectional (20:07) to advance.

After she took 43rd last season, Harrod said, the Royals senior is eyeing a top 25 finish – which would land her a medal.

“She’s done really good at getting out early,” Kristy Harrod said. “She’s wanting to keep that tempo the rest of the way.”

As a sophomore at Aurora Christian, Tanner Chada finished in third place in the Class 1A Cross Country State Championships in 2014.

Now a senior at Hinckley-Big Rock, Royals coach Kristy Harrod said, Chada has one thing on his mind heading into the state meet today at the fast Detweiller Park course in Peoria.

“He wants to win,” Harrod said.

“It’s been his goal the past four years.”

The Sycamore boys team will run in the Class 2A race – although without its best runner – while Kaneland’s Matt Richtman will race individually.

On the girls side, the Kaneland

girls will run at Class 2A, and Hinckley-Big Rock senior Audrey Harrod will run individually at Class 1A. For Chada, it will be his last chance at a state title after missing it in 2014 with a time of 15 minutes, 2 seconds in his third-place finish.

After dealing with a knee injury, he finished 31st in the 2015 state meet (15:43), but Harrod said the senior is healthy. He’s certainly looked it so far this year, winning the Class 1A Peru St. Bede Regional and the Class 1A Oregon Sectional and enters the state meet with the fourth fastest sectional time.

“He’s run this race enough and he’s really disciplined,” Harrod said.

“He won’t come out too fast or too slow.”

Smith, Spartans looking for another run to state

sports@daily-chronicle.com The Sycamore boys bowling team is poised for another successful season in 2016 and a big piece to the puzzle is the return of Trevor Smith.

Smith is coming off a 2015 campaign in which he finished in 10th place individually at the IHSA State Tournament, while his team finished in 15th place but did not advance on the second day of the tournament.

Sycamore coach Aaron Williams will see most of the same team return for its junior and senior seasons, which he said gives them a great chance to see the same kind of success they earned in 2015.

“We have all of our core varsity bowlers back from last year except one, so we are still very strong,” Smith said. “This year there are so many bowlers that have come to practice, so on top of what we already had for a foundation on varsity, and we now have a very large supporting cast to make it all the way to state again, I have full confidence in us.”

While the Spartans are gearing up with essentially the same team as last year, the man leading the way will be Smith in his senior season. It is not uncommon for athletes to work on their craft in the offseason, and Smith is no different. By working on his game, Smith also became in tune with his maturity as a bowler.

“I went to a lot of sportshot tournaments, including junior gold in Indianapolis to just better myself overall as a bowler,” Smith said. “I wanted to do these things to really open my eyes as a bowler and just help myself reach my full potential. I had the mentality that everything good or bad that happened in the tournaments was a learning experience for me.”

For a bowler that finished in the top 10 in the state tournament as a junior, Smith has the same lofty goals in his senior season.

“My personal goals for the season are for sure to make it back to state, get all-conference, and make another run for all-state,” Smith said. “I really want to make my senior year my best.”

Just down the road, the DeKalb Barbs got a taste of the success Sycamore had last year. The Barbs finished just 30 pins short of advancing from the Rockford East Sectional to the state tournament as a team. DeKalb presents a young team with only one senior on the team, Donald Stiles.

Getting them all back on the same page again is a big deal for me. Just practicing and knowing how to watch each other’s shot and knowing what we need to do to adjust our own shot is important. Our consistency has been our biggest improvement from last year, I think. On the varsity side, so far our averages have been pretty close across the board.”

The lowdown: Sycamore brings back the same varsity squad it had in 2015 with the exception of one player, so look for them to have similar success in 2016. Star bowler Trevor Smith is returning for his senior season with big goals for himself and from his coach. According to Williams, he doesn’t see any reason why Smith can’t return as a top 10 finisher at the state tournament, and he sees his team as a whole advancing farther in the state tournament this year.

Agressive NIU powers past Eastern Michigan

sports@daily-chronicle.com DEKALB – The Northern Illinois University woman’s volleyball team clinched the MAC West championship with a clean sweep of the Eastern Michigan Eagles, 25-12, 25-16, 2519. They’ve now won 15 of their last 16 matches.

The Huskies (20-5, 12-1) were dominant on the attack for most of the match, including posting hitting percentages of .483 and .440 in the first two games. Huskies coach Ray Gooden used the third game as an opportunity to make personnel changes and get a few of his players some more experience headed into the MAC tourna-

ment.

“As we are headed to the tournament, all hands are on deck,”Gooden said. “I wanted to get some different players on the floor and build some rhythm. I thought our first set was the tone for tonight. We came out and defended our home court better than when we lost to Miami (Ohio). It was really nice to be one step ahead of the situation tonight.”

Huskies senior middle blocker Lauren Zielinski was precise on the attack, getting eight kills on 13 attempts, an attack percentage of .615. Zielinski passed the praise along to her teammates.

“Our passing was really well,” Zielinski said. “Our back row players were

able to tell me where I should be hitting the ball, which really helped me out. We just have to keep focusing on our side and what we do. When we do that, we are at our best.”

Anna Brereton was the leader of the Huskies defensive effort,leading the team with 14 digs. Chandler Kinley and Sam Boever chipped in with18 and 11 assists respectively.

Eastern Michigan (8-18, 3-10) couldn’t get much going until the third game of the match. As a team, they committed 21 errors. Eagles coach Kimi Olson said that her team just couldn’t get it done tonight.

“We had a few players who had really tough nights,” Olson said. “One player who did have a good night for

us was Ariel [Hamby]. She’s been in and out of the lineup this season and she played well. I’m really proud of her performance.”

Hamby, a freshman right side hitter and graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School, was five of six on the attack. She said that she had the NIU game marked on her schedule for a while.

“I’ve been looking forward to this,” Hamby said. “It meant everything to me. Of course, every game is important but I knew all of my family would be here. When I started to get on a roll, it was a huge relief.”

The Huskies play next on Saturday, when they will host Central Michigan at 7 p.m.

jcowley@suntimes.com CHICAGO – The cheers outweighed the boos for Derrick Rose, as the former Bulls standout made his first trip back to the United Center since being traded to New York in June.

A popularity contest wasn’t all the one-time Simeon High School great would win on Friday night either.

Thanks to Rose’s 15 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds, including a vintage Rose layup and foul with 1:30 left in the game to keep the lead at 10, the Knicks handed the Bulls (3-2) their second consecutive loss, 117-104.

And Rose wasn’t the only former Bull to turn back the clock to haunt an organization that he felt turned its back on him. Joakim Noah played one of his better games in two seasons, scoring 16 points and grabbing nine boards.

“It felt really good,” Noah said. “I’m not going to lie. It felt great. Everybody came with the right mindset. Derrick was doing what he does, just floor general, making great plays for everybody. But I’m not going to lie. This one felt really good.”

As anticipated, the game had its share of heated moments, starting in the third quarter, after Rose hit a midrange jumper to give his team the six-point lead.

Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg called a timeout, and Rose walked down the middle of the court, gesturing to a crowd he once called his own to “bring it on.”

“It was probably from someone taunting me,” Rose said of the gesture. “I love to compete. That’s all that was.

It wasn’t really nothing.”

Midway through the fourth, Jimmy Butler and Noah had a run in, as Butler collided with Noah on the and-one, leading to the two exchanging some words.

“Remain for the book,’’ Butler said, when asked if he could detail what was said. “I don’t know, the guy likes to talk to me. I like to talk back, so. Just two guys out there competing.”

Butler then rolled his eyes, obviously wanting to say more, but taking the high road.

Not that Butler and his new counterpart had a bad night, as Butler finished with 26 points and Dwyane Wade finished with 35, including 5 for 7 from 3-point range.

But Noah and Rose had a better supporting cast, as well as an agenda the Bulls couldn’t match.

“When somebody leaves an organization when they come back they want to do well, they want to win, they want to play well,” Wade said. “Whoever says they don’t is just flat-out lying. It’s no secret about that.

“Jo had a great game. Obviously, we knew he was a great passer, but he scored 16 points for them. Those 16 points were hard to overcome. We weren’t banking on all of those.”

now we move on and it’s [just] great memories.”

It was coach Joel Quenneville’s decision to swap Hossa and Patrick Kane in the lineup – a move made largely to spark Toews – that has actually sparked Hossa. The big Slovak obviously plays a different game than the shifty Kane, but he’s been a perfect fit alongside Panarin and Artem Anisimov. The way he read Panarin’s intentions on his first goal Thursday night was a perfect example of the instant chemistry the trio has found.

“I’m enjoying playing with him a lot,” Panarin said through an interpreter.

“He’s a master, I would say one of the greatest players. And we have a lot of really nice moments.”

After a frustrating season that left him openly wondering if age had finally caught up to him, Hossa has been rejuvenated by the long summer and a hot fall.

And suddenly, those nice moments are coming in bunches again.

“You know, sometimes when the puck goes in early for you, you’re more relaxed,” Hossa said. “All of a sudden, you don’t force things. I think, right now, that’s what happening. Things are clicking.”

Marian Hossa saw Artemi Panarin deep in his own zone in the first period Thursday night, quickly figured out what was about to happen, and simply made a break for it. Sure enough, Panarin flipped a sneaky pass off the boards right to Hossa, who corralled the puck and immediately zipped ahead of Colorado defenseman Fedor Tyutin. As he raced in on Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov, Hossa reached back with his left arm to shove Tyutin off him, controlling the puck with one hand before roofing a shot over Varlamov’s glove hand while being nudged from behind by Tyutin.

Hossa crashed into the boards hard but immediately popped up to his knees, his arms raised in triumph.

“Such a smart play by Panarin,” Hossa said. “He saw me just use my speed, so he flipped the puck so fast off the boards behind my back. I was just hoping he could do that. As soon as I saw the puck going, I tried to use my power moves, tried to out-speed the defender, and tried

Nonsurgical ways to relieve knee pain Dear Dr. K: I saw my doctor because of aching pain in my knee, which sometimes buckles unexpectedly. He says I have chondromalacia. What is this, and what can I do to relieve the pain?

Dear Reader: The joints in your body are cushioned by cartilage. This tough, rubbery tissue covers and protects the ends of bones inside a joint, allowing them to glide smoothly against one another as the joint moves.

With chondromalacia, the cartilage inside a joint softens and breaks down. The ends of the bones can rub together, causing pain. Chondromalacia can affect any joint, but the most common location is inside the knee.

The part of the knee that is affected most often is the kneecap (also known as the patella). The kneecap is a little oval-shaped bone with an undersurface covered by cartilage.

As chondromalacia causes more cartilage to soften, it can crack or shred into a mass of fibers. Bits of cartilage can float inside the joint, irritating the cells that line it and provoking them to produce fluid. In severe cases, the cartilage can wear away completely. That causes pain of the kneecap, in the front of the knee, around the side or even behind the knee.

Chondromalacia of the knee usually is related to injury, overuse and poorly aligned muscles and bones around the knee joint. It especially is common in runners, joggers, skiers, soccer players, cyclists and other athletes who repeatedly stress their knees. Workers who spend a lot of time kneeling also are more likely to develop this problem.

The most common symptom is a dull, aching pain in front of the knee, behind the kneecap. The condition also can make your knee joint “catch”: You suddenly have

Nonsurgical treatments often relieve knee pain within a few months. Your doctor may recommend: • Applying ice for pain or swelling.

• Taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve pain.

• Taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), to ease pain and swelling.

• Starting exercises to strengthen the muscles around your knee. (A physical therapist can design an exercise program for you.)

• Avoiding kneeling, squatting and high-impact exercises.

• Using knee tape, a brace or a special sleeve to keep your kneecap aligned properly.

• Wearing inserts called orthotics inside your shoes to keep your foot in proper position – neither turned in or out too much – when you bear weight on that foot, and the knee above it.

If nonsurgical treatments fail, or if you have severe symptoms, your doctor may recommend arthroscopy. This surgical procedure uses miniature instruments inserted through small incisions to repair joint problems. Damaged cartilage can be removed during the surgery. If necessary, your doctor also can correct the alignment of knee structures to help reduce wear and tear.

Dear Abby: At DEAR ABBY 26, I am about to move in with Jeanne my girlfriend, Phillips “Candace.”

I love her so much, and I’m confident she’s the one I want to marry. Candace has her 4-year-old daughter, “Michelle,” with her most of the time we are together.

I’m confident moving in together is the right decision, but living with Michelle makes me nervous. Although Michelle is smart and well-behaved, like most kids, she can be bratty and demand a lot of attention from Candace and me.

Candace has the utmost patience with Michelle, and I trust her ability as a parent.

If West leads another spade, South wins, draws trumps, and leads a third spade. Or, if West shifts to a diamond, declarer takes East’s queen with his ace, draws trumps, and returns the diamond jack. A spade loser evaporates on the diamond 10. He loses only one spade and one diamond.
