Automated vehicles could threaten jobs of drivers

Ronald De Feo has watched robots take factory jobs for years. Now he sees them threatening a new class of worker: people who drive for a living.

“I am in Pittsburgh; it’s a test market for Uber’s autonomous vehicle,” said De Feo, CEO of the industrial materials firm Kennametal. “We see all these (automated) Ubers running around the streets of Pittsburgh, a confusing and difficult place to navigate. If they can make that work, what do you think happens to the job of being a taxi driver?”

Computer scientists and economists said the threat isn’t merely theoretical: Automated cars pose an existential threat to the many Americans who drive for a living: 2.9 million truckers and delivery drivers, 674,000 bus drivers, 181,000 cab drivers and chauffeurs.

The big question is how long it will take auto and tech companies to clear the technical hurdles to turning the streets over to driverless cars.

“I don’t see herds of robotic trucks running down the highway in the next few years,” said Vern Meyerotto, a 61-year-old truck driver in Denver. “There’s an awful lot of development that needs to be done on it.”

Meyerotto, who’s been driving since 2007, points to the self-driving Tesla Model S car that crashed in May, killing the driver, after the car’s cameras failed to detect a tractor-trailer crossing

its path. He doesn’t expect to see robotic trucks doing much driving for 10 or 15 more years.

But the quick development of driverless cars has caught economists by surprise.

Assessing which jobs were vulnerable to robots in a 2004 book, economists Frank Levy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Richard Murnane of Harvard University reckoned that truck drivers were safe. Surely, a machine couldn’t negotiate rush-hour traffic without a helping human hand.

Six years later, Google’s automated cars were on the road, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, circling Lake Tahoe and cruising down Hollywood Boulevard.

Now, companies from Ford to Tesla to Uber are investing in automated car technology.

“The next big wave of automation will apply to driving,” said Moshe Vardi, a computer scientist at Rice University.

Vardi suspects that truck drivers will be the first victims. Automated trucks can be programmed to go from one warehouse to another, plying express lanes reserved for trucks that let them avoid interacting with human drivers.

Vardi notes that vulnerable truckers have much in common with the factory workers who’ve been ousted by machines over the past several decades: They tend to be white men, middle-aged or older, with high school-only educations – the people who’ve formed the core support for Donald Trump.

“These things do not happen without political consequences,” Vardi said.

Stage Coach Players will celebrate 70 years with concerts

DeKALB – Since taking her first acting role with Stage Coach Players four years ago – an orphan in “Annie” – Camryn Mason, 12, has gained new confidence that she said is helping her prepare to sing in the theater’s 70th anniversary show.

“I honestly didn’t think Stage Coach was for singing; I thought it was more for acting,” she said. “So, I was not a singer before I got to Stage Coach. I was so nervous, but my voice has improved over the years, and now I enjoy singing.”

Camryn is one of five children who will be in the cabaret-style concert, “70 Seasons of Stage Coach: A Musical Celebration.”

The concert will feature songs from more than 40 plays and musicals the nonprofit theater company has put on through the decades, including “South Pacific,” “Camelot,” “Shrek,” “The Music Man,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Wizard of Oz” and “Les Miserables.”

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m.

Friday and Saturday at the Stage Coach Theatre, 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for children younger than 12. They can be purchased at www.stagecoachers.com or by calling the box office at 815-758-1940.

Camryn said she finds the thrill and excitement of each show “kind of addicting.”

“I was shy, but when I’m on stage, I’m raw, I’m out there, and I’m me,” she said. “I can just be me.”

Cortney Newby, one of the show’s three directors, said about 43 people are in the production, but a lot more auditioned.

“This show is made up of new people who have never been part of Stage Coach and some people who have been with us for over 30 years,” Newby said.

“We have a nice variety of ages 10 until I can’t tell you.”

She said young people who get involved in Stage Coach have many adults they can look up to in the group, such as Sue Johnson, who won the 2016 Athena Award last month.

“They do have a lot of role models, a lot of the older ladies who take some of them under their wing, like a grandma, an aunt,” Newby said. “People are always like ‘grandma so-and-so’ or ‘aunt so-and-so,’ so we are a huge family.”

Gavin Wilson, who has been with Stage Coach since 1986, will be singing “Try to Remember” from “The Fantastiks,” which was the last play the group performed before moving locations in 2001. A montage of pictures from the past 70 years of productions will be shown during Wilson’s solo.

Wilson said the organization and structure at Stage Coach have helped it to survive for so long, and that success is perpetuated by the group’s unique charm.

“It’s a college town, so there’s always a lot of talented people,” he said.

“It’s also close enough to Chicago, maybe, but far enough away that it has its own identity, and I think there’s been enough support from the community.

We get a lot of devoted people.”

Director Michele McClane said one of the challenges was cutting songs down and fitting them together into a two-hour show.

“Initially, we wanted a smaller show, but we had so many great people come out to audition that we grew the show,” McClane said. “Well, I guess we

can do 40 people instead of 25.”

Director Nika Morton said she didn’t think she would stay with Stage Coach for long, but she realized the family-like bonds that participants form after her first show in 2010. She even met her husband through Stage Coach, who also will be in the 70th anniversary show.

“I always think we’re so lucky to have an experience like this together,” Morton said. “There’s not very many places like this where you can go and give some performance, give a part of yourself to the audience, like there is in theater.”

In addition to the usual 50/50 raffle, a pair of season tickets also will be raffled that will allow the winner to select shows to attend from Stage Coach’s upcoming season.

“It’s a fundraiser just to raise money because we’re a nonprofit organization, but really it is not about the money,” Newby said. “It’s about performing and coming together and celebrating. It’s more like a thankyou.”

State police say they have new suspect in ’57 Sycamore homicide

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Illinois State Police said they continue to investigate the 1957 slaying of 7-year-old Sycamore girl Maria Ridulph and have a new suspect in the case.

Special Agent Ron Ogarek reopened the case after the state police were asked to investigate a suspect named in an anonymous letter, according to court documents the state police agency filed in response to a lawsuit filed by Jack McCullough’s son-in-law, Casey Porter.

McCullough was convicted in 2012 of Ridulph’s kidnapping and homicide after a state police investigation that began in 2008. After his conviction, the case was closed. However, the case was reopened around the same time as McCullough’s conviction was vacated this year.

DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack disavowed the prosecution of McCullough on March 24, saying McCullough could not have committed the crime because he was in Rockford at the time. McCullough has been released from prison and is seeking a declaration of innocence.

The same day, Schmack received the anonymous letter, court records show.

He declined to comment on its contents or name the suspect, but confirmed he had given the information to police.

“Shortly thereafter, ISP was approached to investigate this possible lead,” Ogarek wrote in an affidavit.

“I was assigned as the reporting agent for the reopening of the investigation.”

Since then, Ogarek said, he had reviewed the case files, started to review information in the files related to the new suspect, “conducted an investigative workup” of the named

A state police spokesman declined to comment on the case.

In a separate court filing, Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault said that he received a tip about the case from Schmack during a meeting April 27.

Theriault said he “forwarded that new information relevant to the ongoing investigation” to the state police because that was the lead agency

on the case.

The court filings came in response to the lawsuit filed by Porter seeking records related to the investigation of McCullough.

Both the state police and Sycamore police have said they cannot turn over the documents that Porter requested because the investigation is ongoing.

“In my professional opinion, the disclosure of the information requested would obstruct and interfere with ISP’s ongoing investigation into

Maria Ridulph’s murder,” Ogarek said in court documents.

“Additionally, the 23 pages in question from the case file are of particular importance as Kathy Chapman was the only witness to Ms. Ridulph’s disappearance. Therefore, the release of information contained in those pages could impair ISP’s current investigation into the March 24th anonymous tip, as well as future leads, by disseminating information that is currently confidential to the public,” Ogarek’s affidavit said.

The driver of a Ford Explorer pulled out from near the Arby’s restaurant in the 1900 block of Sycamore Road and was struck by a Honda CRV, authorities said. The Honda’s driver tried to avoid the crash, and the vehicle rolled over and landed upside down, DeKalb police Cmdr. Steve Lekkas.

Two women inside the Honda were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital. Lekkas said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Emergency responders helped get the women out of the vehicle.

The driver of the Ford Explorer was expected to be cited for failure to yield, Lekkas said.

The names of women and the driver of the Ford Explorer were not immediately available.

Police had to close Sycamore Road temporarily while responding to the crash.

DeKALB – Mariah Tyler said she had to quit her job earlier in the semester when she could not find child care, and if she had not been a MAP grant recipient, she is unsure where she or her 3-month-old son would be now.

“I don’t think I should be forced to make that type of decision,” Tyler said. “I think that MAP grants should be fully funded for those who definitely need it, as well as for myself; I am currently studying for the LSAT to go to law school, and I just want my future to be funded.”

Tyler, a senior at Northern Illinois University, was one of several Student Association senators who spoke Thursday at a rally on NIU’s campus.

About 50 people – including administrators, faculty and staff, students and state representatives – attended the rally, hosted by the Student Association Senate to advocate for higher education and MAP (Monetary Award Program) grant funding.

DeKalb Mayor John Rey said the local economy depends on NIU, which has an $895 million regional impact,

vote and just send a postcard,” said state Rep. Bob Pritchard, a Republican who represents the 70th District that includes NIU. “Get to know who your legislator is. Talk to them about the importance of not only MAP, but higher education.”

Reggie Bates, vice president of the Student Association Senate, said his grades suffered when he did not file his FAFSA in time to receive MAP money his junior year, as he had to choose some nights between studying or finding his next meal.

“I cannot stress how hard it is to see students who have potential, but then they can’t come into it because they have to work overnight factory jobs or cut hair,” he said. “Let’s be honest – some have to sell drugs or other miscellaneous activities to pay for school.”

Greg Long, president of NIU’s Faculty Senate, said he was disappointed that students needed to have the same rally two years in a row.

“To have this now a year later with the same situation is very disheartening,” he said. “A third of our students or more are MAP recipients. I fully agree with the concept that this is a civil rights and social justice issue.”

STATE Senate hopefuls recall personal triumphs in late push

CHICAGO – He’s the stroke survivor who returned to Washington after a year of rehab determined to put people before his party. She’s the war hero who lost both legs in the Iraq War, then turned to fighting for Illinois families.

Making their final push for voters to send them to the U.S. Senate, Republican Sen. Mark Kirk and Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth are returning to the personal stories that had their contest shaping up early on as one the most compelling in the country.

Both candidates are disabled and have triumphed over adversity. But those story lines took a back seat for much of the race as Kirk went on the attack against Duckworth, who is heavily favored to win Tuesday.

Kirk ran multiple ads ripping Duckworth’s record as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.

He also criticized her as ineffective in Congress and repeatedly tried to link her to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who appointed Duckworth to the state post and now is in prison.

Duckworth hit back with ads saying Kirk lied about his own military experience and criticized him for a series of verbal gaffes.

Governor gives $1M to GOP comptroller candidate

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner has given $1 million of his own money to Republican incumbent Leslie Munger’s bid for Illinois comptroller.

State records this week showed the contribution that came from the former venture capitalist and his wife, Diana Rauner.

Rauner appointed Munger to the post last year after Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka’s death. Tuesday’s special election determines who finishes the term.

Kirk previously inflicted damage on his campaign with other controversial comments, including calling an unmarried senator a “bro with no ho.”

Kirk is circling back to a positive ad about his stroke and recovery that he ran early in the election cycle. In it, he recounts being in an ambulance, holding a paramedic’s hand and thinking it was “the last human being I would ever touch.”

The four-way race already has seen massive fundraising, largely from a Rauner campaign fund and businessmen who support Rauner.

Since 2015’s start, Munger has raised more than $10 million, including $2 million from shipping executive Richard Uihlein and $5 million from Citadel CEO Ken Griffin.

Democratic Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza raised about $3.5 million in the same period.

Libertarian Claire Ball and Green Party candidate Tim Curtin also are running.

Police: 3 killed, 1 critically wounded in Chicago shooting

CHICAGO – Police said three people were killed and a fourth critically wounded in a Chicago shooting being investigated as a possible domestic incident.

Police said the shooting

happened about 12:10 a.m.

Thursday in the South Chicago neighborhood, killing two women and a 16-year-old boy.

Police said a woman who was shot in the chest was taken to a hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.

Details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.

Police said no one was taken into custody.

Climatologists: Oct. seventh warmest on record in Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – Climatologists said the average statewide temperature in Illinois last month was the seventh warmest October on record.

Illinois State Water Survey reported Wednesday that the average temperature for October was 59.8 degrees, 5.4 degrees above normal. The warmest

climbing as a metaphor for overcoming challenges; Sunday’s event benefits the rehabilitation hospital where the first-term senator learned to walk and talk again.

“Every Illinois family has steps to climb,” Kirk said. “I want to serve as the inspiration for over 300,000 stroke survivors in Illinois that while their lives have changed, recovery is achievable and they must never give up.”

Duckworth, a second-term congresswoman, is running a final ad that references the day the helicopter she was co-piloting was shot down in Iraq in 2004. In the statewide ad, Duckworth said she knows what it’s like “to fight for your life behind enemy lines” and to not be left behind.

“If you elect me to the Senate, I’ll be guided by the simple notion that if you don’t give up on yourself, America won’t give up on you,” she said.

Duckworth entered the race with some big advantages. Illinois is a reliably Democratic state – even more so in presidential election years, and Duckworth raised millions more for what her party saw as the top opportunity to pick up a seat and potentially retake control of the Senate.

Kirk reported having just $576,000 cash on hand as of Oct. 19, while Duckworth had about $2.5 million, according to a pre-election campaign finance filing.

October was in 1963, when the average hit 63.6 degrees.

The report also said Illinois has experienced above-normal temperatures in nine out of the 10 months of 2016.

The average temperature for the period from January through October was 58 degrees, 2.5 degrees above normal. That also makes it the fourth warmest January through October in Illinois on record. The warmest was in 2012, when the average was 59.1 degrees.

The Illinois State Water Survey is a Division of the Prairie Research Institute of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Nelson Algren museum is planned in beach community

GARY, Ind. – A museum dedicated to Nelson Algren is planned in the northwest Indi-

ana beach community where the late Chicago author had a cottage.

The Times reported that the Nelson Algren Society of Miller Beach plans to display the author’s desk, chair and typewriter. Organizers are looking for other Algren memorabilia.

Algren won the first National Book Award in fiction in 1950 for “The Man with the Golden Arm.” The novel about a card dealer with a morphine habit is set in Chicago and was made into a movie starring Frank Sinatra.

The Algren Society plans to open the museum in March of next year on the late author’s birthday. The Miller neighborhood already has a small park and an annual festival dedicated to Algren, who died in 1981.

NEW YORK – A woman who appeared to win a life-changing $42.9 million jackpot at a New York City casino is threatening to sue after being told the big payout she was shown was simply the result of a malfunction.

Katrina Bookman was playing the penny slot machine at Resorts World Casino in August when it displayed a message that read, “Printing Cash Ticket. $42,949,642.76.” She even took a selfie next to the screen to celebrate. But when Bookman tried to collect, the casino told her it was all a big mistake and she was only owed the $2.25 balance she had on the machine.

“Machine malfunctions are rare, and we would like to extend our apologies to Ms. Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused,” the casino said in a statement.

The New York State Gaming Commission investigated and said the bogus payout was “clearly a display malfunction.”

The machine was taken out of service, repaired and put back a day later, the commission said.

No verdict in Day 4 of bridge deliberations

NEWARK, N.J. – A federal jury went home Thursday without reaching a verdict in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing trial of two former allies of Re-

publican Gov. Chris Christie as defense attorneys sought a mistrial and to have some evidence removed from consideration.

Four days into deliberations, the jury left the courthouse without sending any questions to the judge. That was in contrast to Tuesday’s session, when they raised several questions about the counts in the indictment against Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni.

Kelly, Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, and Baroni, his top appointee to the bridge authority, are charged with scheming to use traffic jams to punish a Democratic mayor who didn’t endorse Christie in 2013.

Brexit hits speed bump after court ruling

LONDON –Britain’s plans to leave the European Union hit a large speed bump Thursday, as the High Court ruled that the government can’t start exit negotiations without a vote in Parliament.

The judgment deepened Britain’s divide over Europe, raising hopes among pro-EU politicians that they can soften the terms of the U.K.’s withdrawal from the bloc. “Leave” campaigners said any attempt to do that would be a betrayal of voters’ decision.

The government immediately said it would ask the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Donald Trump warned Thursday that a cloud of investigation would follow Hillary Clinton into the White House, evoking the bitter impeachment battle of the 1990s in a closing campaign argument meant to bring wayward Republicans home. Clinton and her allies, led by President Barack Obama, told voters to get serious about the dangers of Trump.

As polls show Trump closing in on Clinton in key battleground states, her campaign is rushing to shore up support in some long-standing Democratic strongholds.

That includes the campaign’s Michigan firewall, a remarkable situation for a candidate who looked to be cruising to an easy win just a week ago.

Clinton’s shrunken lead has given Trump’s campaign a glimmer of hope, one he’s trying to broaden into a breakthrough before time runs out. That means zeroing in on questions of Clinton’s trustworthiness and a new FBI review of an aide’s emails.

The attack is aimed at appealing to moderate Republicans and independents who have been the holdouts of his campaign, turned off by his behavior but equally repelled by the possible return of the Clintons.

“Here we go again with the Clintons – you remember the impeachment and the problems,” Trump said Thursday at a rally in Jacksonville.

“That’s not what we need in our country, folks. We need someone who is ready to go to work.”

Clinton and allies, meanwhile, are seeking to keep the spotlight on Trump, charging that his disparaging comments about women and minorities, and his temperament make him unfit for office.

Clinton was slated to campaign later Thursday with former primary opponent Sen. Bernie Sanders and pop star Pharrell Williams in Raleigh.

Trump’s path to victory remains narrow. He must win Florida to win the White House, no easy feat. Still, his campaign has been buoyed by tightening polls there and in other key battlegrounds, as well as by signs that African-American turnout for Clinton may be lagging.

Clinton enlisted Obama’s help urging those voters to

the polls and lighting a fire under other Democrats, particularly young people, who share some of the wariness about Clinton. Speaking to students at Florida International University in Miami, Obama told voters now was the time to get serious about the choice.

“This isn’t a joke. This isn’t ‘Survivor.’ This isn’t ‘The Bachelorette.’ ” he said, taunting the former reality-TV star. “This counts.”

Relishing one of his last turns on the campaign stage as president, Obama repeatedly returned to his new campaign catchphrase capturing his disbelief in the unpredictable race to replace him.

“C’mon, man,” he said, to cheers.

Obama has been trying to bait Republican into veering off message – counting on Trump not to have the discipline or the ground game to capitalize on a late surge.

But the famously unconventional Trump has been hewing closer to convention, running some upbeat ads, bringing out his wife for a rare campaign appearance and even talking publicly about trying not to get distracted.

A great end to a great season

It’s a great day for a parade.

When the World Series began Oct. 25, we said it wasn’t enough just to be there. We wanted it all.

After waiting 108 years, it seemed only fitting that Cubs fans would have to endure the suspense and drama of a seven-game series, with the last game a 10-inning, emotional roller coaster that included a 17-minute rain delay.

But when the game finally ended, so too did all the phony-baloney talk about curses and chokes, of the Cubs being lovable losers whose fans always wait till next year.

Next year is here.

All season, this Cubs team was amazing. It had some of the game’s top hitters in first baseman Anthony Rizzo and third baseman Kris Bryant, the likely NL MVP. It had some of its best pitchers in Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks. It had some players with great stories, from Kyle Schwarber’s rushed return from knee surgery to play in the series, to “Grandpa” David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who homered in Game 7, the last of his career.

The Cubs clearly were baseball’s best squad from start to finish, winning 103 regular-season games and winning the NL Central Division by a jaw-dropping 17½ games.

Although there was little doubt the Cubs would win their division during the regular season, these playoffs provided enough drama to last us through the long winter ahead.

The Cubs thrilled us with a four-run, ninth-inning comeback to vanquish San Francisco in a National League Division Series.

After being shut out in back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, they roared back and won the National League pennant by roughing up Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in that series’ decisive sixth game.

The Cleveland Indians provided the toughest challenge. They had plowed through the American League playoffs with a lights-out bullpen, and had a tradition of futility that rivaled the Cubs’ – it’s now 68 years and counting. They had the Cubs on the ropes with a 3-1 series lead – but the Cubs refused to quit.

We send our condolences to Cleveland – if anyone can relate to how you feel, it’s Cubs fans.

But someone had to lose this series as certainly as someone had to win it, and 108 years of misery and near-misses was more than anyone should be expected to endure.

Today, the Cubs are World Series champions, and their fans feel a joy that they’ve never experienced before, an emotion that they’ll get to pour out when the team parades through Chicago before a noon rally in Grant Park.

What a great way to close a remarkable season. Go Cubs go!

Progressives are overstepping Hillary Clinton’s election as president is hardly a sure thing. Nevertheless, progressives in the Democratic Party, feeling emboldened by the strong showing of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, in the primaries, are preparing their demands for a second Clinton administration. Following the old Washington adage that “personnel is policy,” unions, activists and think-tankers, under the informal auspices of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, and Sanders, are putting together lists of acceptable candidates for senior administration jobs – and a blacklist of unacceptable ones.

A certain amount of factional horse-trading over nominations is par for the course in politics; it’s especially so in a year when Clinton is reliant on support of the Warren-Sanders troops. We might add, however, that if Warren wanted to ensure her choices got picked, she could have run for president herself, as many urged her to do; Sanders did run, but failed to get more votes than Clinton, so his entitlement to determine administration staffing is a bit debatable as well.

The real problem, however, is not the fact of the lobbying, but rather its nature: Clinton is being told, apparently, to apply a series of litmus tests to her potential nominees that include not only adherence to the Democratic Party platform, the drafting of which she largely (but not totally) ceded to Sanders, but also avoidance of any connection to the financial industry – notwithstanding whatev-

er expertise it might confer. These conditions, or others unknown, may disqualify two able potential treasury secretaries, Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook and current Federal Reserve Board member Lael Brainard.

The advance veto on future nominees that Warren and Sanders are seeking, if carried to its logical extreme, would make them de facto usurpers of presidential power. The left’s model is its successful campaign against Obama’s choice of former investment banker Antonio Weiss as undersecretary of treasury for domestic finance in 2014. Under fire from Warren because of his role in the now-forgotten merger of Burger King and a Canadian company, Weiss withdrew last year without a Senate hearing. In the end, this blackballing accomplished nothing practical: Weiss accepted a Treasury job that did not require Senate confirmation, and ably shepherded bipartisan legislation to restructure Puerto Rico’s finances. But, the job for which he was originally tapped remains empty. Such end runs could take place in a Clinton administration, too, thwarting the left but at the risk of muddied lines of accountability in the bureaucracy.

People should be nominated based on their individual merits by the person with clear constitutional power to do the nominating. If elected, Clinton should declare from the outset that is how she will operate.

One woman came up to me at Hillary Clinton’s rally at Kent State, where I teach journalism. As do so many other women, she doesn’t want me to use her name for fear the men who shouted at her might track her down at home.

When I asked how they knew she supports Clinton, she smiled and pointed at me. “Because I look like you, right? We’re of a certain age, and they assume.”

Yes, they do. So clever of them.

Last month, I pulled in to a Walgreens parking lot about a mile from my house to pick up a few packs of family photos. As soon as I got out of the car, I saw him – and he saw me.

He was in his early 30s, I’d guess, wearing a Trump T-shirt. At the sight of me, he stopped and waited by the entrance. I doubt he recognized me.

I’m not his type of columnist. I tried to avoid looking at him as I approached the entrance, but he was itching for a fight. He pointed to his chest and said, “I’ll bet this scares you.”

I shook my head and did something stupid: I paid attention to him.

“Son, your anger is none of my business,” I said, and then I walked into

When confronted with data from Amato, I found the response of our state’s attorney to be curious and outright frightening.

Schmack’s defense was to point out that “the vast majority of Class X felonies in DeKalb County are drug charges that are enhanced because of their proximity to schools, parks or churches.”

He continues, in many of these cases, the crimes didn’t actually take place in a school, park or church, but happened within 1,000 feet of one of these places. Does the crime actually have to take place in a school for Schmack to make his decision to enforce the law as written?

It is time to elect a state’s attorney who will focus on serious crime and not substitute his opinions for the law and the will of the citizens.

ProPublica, a Pulitzer Prize-winning independent news organization, described Donald Trump supporters heckling voters at the elections office in West Palm Beach, Florida. They were captured on video shouting through bullhorns: “How many Syrian refugees, Muslim refugees, are you taking into your home?” one Trump supporter yelled at Clinton supporters. “You hypocrites!

Separate the people! Over here we have LGBT. And then over here we have the blacks. And then over here we have the Hispanics. But I’m going to tell you something: The hardworking American people that served in the armed forces for this country stand with Donald Trump!”

Collection site for Christmas project open DAILY CHRONICLE First Baptist Church of Sycamore will serve as a collection site for Operation Christmas Child – the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

The annual project is a favorite of many area residents, families, churches and groups who spread joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with a gift such as a doll or soccer ball, other toys, school supplies, clothing and notes of encouragement.

During National Collection Week, Nov. 14 to 21, anyone can drop off a

gift-filled shoebox to send to a child overseas. The church hopes residents will contribute more than 1,900 shoebox gifts to the 2016 global goal of reaching 13 million children in need.

Junior middle blocker Jasmine Kemp, who had four blocks for the Barbs volleyball team against Crystal Lake Central in the opening set of Thursday’s Class 4A Huntley Sectional final, was why.

“We were actually singing the ‘Brickhouse’ song,” first-year Barbs coach Jamie DiMaggio said. “She’s been sick for two weeks, and she just stomped them.

It was cool to see her getting the movement down, and getting her hands on the ball. The girls were having a blast.”

Kemp triggered the Barbs defensively in the first set as fifth-seeded DeKalb outlasted No. 2 Crystal Lake Central, 25-23, 25-20, to capture the first sectional title in program history.

“To be the first team means that we really worked hard for it,” Kemp said of winning a sectional title. “All the credit goes to the coaches for bringing this team together. I appreciate them a lot. Now we have to get in a lot of reps in practice and just go from there. We can only get better.”

Kemp, who also had three kills,

had six of the eight team blocks for DeKalb. Junior outsider hitter Hannah Oehlberg recorded 13 kills on offense, senior setter Jacqueline Longeville dished out 17 assists and senior libero Abby Boyden had nine digs.

DiMaggio was unaware that the Barbs never had won a sectional volleyball title before Thursday until after Oehlberg put away the final point and the team posed for pictures with the plaque.

“It’s incredible, and I’m really lucky to be surrounded by such a great group of girls every day,” DiMaggio said. “They know what they want. They worked hard in the offseason, and they worked hard in practice. They play for each other, and we’re just taking it one day at a time, and enjoying our time together.”

DeKalb jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the second set and later led, 1714, but the Tigers (26-9) battled back to make it hard on the Barbs.

Central libero Kendall Lownds served two straight aces to pull the Tigers within a point, 18-17, and a kill by

Madde Blake later cut DeKalb’s lead to 20-19, but the Barbs answered with five out of the final six points.

Oehlberg had nine of her 13 kills in the second set, including the match-winner set up by Longeville.

“Honestly, it’s awesome,” Longeville said. “It’s a great feeling to make history. I think we came out with just as much energy in the second set, and we knew that they (Central) were going to be out to get us and push back hard. We wanted to push back harder ... and we just finished.”

Blake, Camryn Hausler and Olivia Anderson (three blocks) led the Tigers with four kills apiece, Lownds had two aces and seven digs, Olivia Doak had 12 assists, and Emily Kelly added two aces and six digs.

“DeKalb runs a really quick attack, especially on the outside,” Central coach Lisa Brunstrum said. “We really struggled defensively getting set and stopped in our positions to really defend against that.”

That, in essence, summarizes five decades of McDougal’s hardwood core values, not to mention why he compiled 692 career victories, gained entrance to numerous halls of fame, led the Huskies to their first Division I NCAA tournament berth, and became a coaching legend in the Illinois prep ranks and at every gym along the way.

What indelible NIU memories from McDougal’s 10 seasons at Chick Evans Field House. The rolled-up game program ala UCLA’s Johnny Wooden.

His acerbic wit. The classy demeanor.

Matching basketball acumen with the game’s elite – Lute Olson, Rich Falk, Jack Hartman, Danny Nee, Ray Meyer, Digger Phelps, Bobby Nichols, Rick Majerus, et al. The roar of the Evans crowd.

At the many Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame banquets I’ve attended, McDougal held court in the hospitality room with not only his peers, but the younger, upcoming coaches. Until he could not travel in recent winters, Johnny Mac would be surrounded by longtime Huskies fans eager to say “hi” when he visited and sat in the Convocation Center courtside seats.

Why the deep-rooted popularity?

McDougal, the outstanding coach and teacher, was even a better person, the man of the people. Maybe the Joe Novak of that era.

“A man of unwavering character,” said NIU forward Tim Dillon (1980-84), an honorable mention All-America and first-team Academic All-America pick.

“As a player, coach not only saw the best in you, but got the best out of you. And it just wasn’t basketball. It was about life.”

Dave Kaplan, ex-McDougal aide and current Chicago sports media personality at WMVP-AM radio and Comcast SportsNet, called Johnny Mac his “second father.”

Maddon, all the big names – John was an equal to every one,” Kaplan added.

Kaplan also brought up McDougal’s dry sense of humor. “Kap” does not hide the fact he is diehard Cubs fan, of course, and Johnny Mac grew up downstate rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals. After his recent stroke, only Johnny Mac would tell his former assistant: “I think it’s time to go before the Cubs win the World Series.”

My favorite McDougal memories (among many): No. 1: Yes, McDougal had his critics.

Some thought he was too conservative.

I remember when Brad Waller (198285), another Academic All-America and one of the finest perimeter shooters I ever have seen, asked his old coach about the newly instituted 3-point basket. Waller: “Coach, would you have let me shoot the three?” McDougal: “Gosh dang, no. Get the ball inside.”

No. 2: Johnny Mac was old-school, inside-out on offense and man-to-man on defense. Pound the ball inside to Matt Hicks or Allen Rayhorn. Why not? High-percentage shots, right?

Their All-America credentials spoke for themselves. Forward Paul “Doctor D” Dawkins (1975-79) would roam the perimeter firing mid-range or corner jumpers and scored 47 points at Western Michigan in 1978-79. I thought coach had lost his mind. Wrong again,

Mike. NIU prevailed in the shootout, 102-100, in overtime. By the time Kenny Battle arrived, as Waller noted, McDougal adapted by running a flex offense with more screening and opted for more zones on defense.

No. 3: During the 1981-82 season, NIU played at Notre Dame and against future Bulls guard John Paxson. The Huskies let a big lead dissipate, and Phelps manipulated the clock, lengthening the game to let the Irish inch closer.

The Irish put on a full-court press and it looked like there were seven green jerseys instead of five. Timeout, Johnny Mac. What did the “conservative” McDougal do? He had 6-foot-9 Rayhorn throw a perfect 65-foot in-bounds pass over the Irish defense to a streaking Ross Kingley for a wide-open layup.

Game, set, match – NIU, 70-65.

No. 4: Battle faced off against Miami senior superstar Ron Harper at Evans in 1985-86. With seconds left, Harper drove to the bucket and Battle pinned the ball on the backboard square. No call. Buzzer sounds. Refs run off the floor. NIU triumphed, 77-75, in overtime before 6,076 screaming spectators. Miami coach Darrell Hedric was at mid-court begging (rightfully so) for a goaltending call. I looked over at our bench and McDougal was standing there, rolling up that game program with that mischievous grin on his face.

Seven weeks later, McDougal was fired, ultimately by the shortest tenured president in school history. Still doesn’t make much sense to me, considering Johnny Mac talked retirement after Battle’s would-be senior year. That 1985-86 team finished 15-12, featuring wins over Northwestern, Marquette and Miami, with seven sophomores on the roster and two future NIU Hall of Famers (Battle and Rodney Davis).

What was the rationale – besides ego?

Frankly, despite NCAA trips in 1991 and 1996, NIU men’s basketball never fully has recovered from that decision. The program lost its way, its focus, and its identity as a “major independent,” and then a stopgap league affiliation until reconnecting with the Mid-American Conference.

Me? I still can see John rolling up that program and hear the roar of the crowd. One of the game’s (and NIU’s) finest, Johnny Mac and this community deserved a better farewell.

Round 2 matchup a rematch of Week 1 showdown

GENOA – For the last five weeks of the regular season, no football team scored more than a touchdown against Genoa-Kingston.

Last week, Coal City broke through for double digits, but still lost, 35-10, to the Cogs in the first round of Class 4A state playoffs.

Tonight, the perfect Cogs play host to Rockford Lutheran in the second round. The Crusaders came as close as any team has to beating G-K, missing a 23-yard field goal in the closing seconds in a 32-30 loss in Week 1.

The No. 3-seeded Cogs (10-0) haven’t given up more than 20 points in a game since, and after allowing 30 in the opener, they’ve only surrendered 90 in the nine games since.

“They got a lot of weapons, and we were fortunate to get out of there with the win,” Genoa-Kingston coach Bill McCarty said. “Hopefully, we can contain their whole running game, passing game. They’re very explosive.

Every time [quarterback Payton Womack] touches the ball, he can score.

They’re just all-around very good, very explosive.”

Womack was 18 for 33 for 324 yards and a score and ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns in the first matchup.

He had a 17-yard scoring run that put the No. 6 Crusaders (8-2) ahead, 30-26, with 2:15 left.

He finished the regular season completing 54 percent of his passes for 1,327 yards and 10 touchdowns with two interceptions. He also led the team with 867 rushing yards and 12 scores.

“We took it to them the first time, but they just missed that field goal,” cornerback/receiver Zach Miller said.

“We need to play hard, come out strong, get that first score and shut them down on D. Shut down their quarterback, for sure.”

The Cogs hope to counter with a potent, clock-eating rushing attack led by Aidan Simmons (147 carries, 920 yards, 14 touchdowns) and Dan Guardi (101844-9).

Quarterback Zach Butler threw for 209 yards and two scores and ran for another 77 and two more touchdowns in the win. He also returned a kick 92 yards for a touchdown.

He has 1,020 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and no interceptions this season.

“We can base our game plan off what we’ve seen them do against us already this year,” Butler said. “Like they always say, it’s tough to beat a good team twice.”

The Crusaders enter the game on an eight-game winning streak – after the G-K loss, they lost, 35-22, at still-unbeaten Byron and haven’t lost since. Their point totals against the Cogs and Tigers

are their two lowest outputs of the year.

It’s a battle of teams that have won a combined 18 straight games, with the winner facing No. 2 Johnsburg (10-0) or No. 10 Manteno (7-3) next week in the quarterfinals. As the wins mount for the Cogs, Butler said the team is maintaining the same attitude it has all year.

“We just stay focused on one week at a time, one game at a time,” Butler said.

“We stay focused during the week on our opponent and not look too far ahead.”

NIU commit too much for Kaneland Knights’ season ends with 33 wins

Playing against her was a whole other experience.

What the Knights volleyball team didn’t know in its Class 3A Freeport Sectional final against Sterling was just how hard the Golden Warriors senior and NIU recruit can pummel the volleyball across the net from either the left corner or the back row.

The Knights saw plenty of Martin’s slams. Twenty-five of them went down with little defense, as Kaneland ended its season with a 25-23, 25-19 loss Thursday.

Martin’s 25 kills set a Sterling school record for a two-set match – she had 28 kills in a three-set match against LaSalle-Peru in September. Five kills came from running advances from the back row, and the other 20 were from the corner.

“We couldn’t stop her,” Kaneland coach Cyndi Violett said. “She’s a great player. She was hitting all of her spots, and hitting over our blocks. We were trying to take advantage of any time she was in the back row, and gain as many points as we can.”

Martin had only two hitting errors for the Golden Warriors (32-5-1), and

“We might have been down, but we did not give up at all,” Martin said.

“We fought and fought and fought to get back. We’re not ready for our season to end. We’re having too much fun.”

“Kaylee is amazing. She’s an amazing hitter, and it’s hard to block her and get her up.”

Jablonski led the Knights with 10 kills, 10 digs and 10 service points. Senior Jessica Weber added nine kills, seven digs and three blocks, while fellow senior Hannah Nauert dished out 28 assists for the Knights.

“I’m so happy with how our season went,” Jablonski said. “We got our goals accomplished, and we went out well.

“I’m going to miss this team,” she added. “That’s the hard part, not playing with all of my seniors next year.”

It happened! It really happened!

CLEVELAND – Upon waking, start with the simple and the immediate.

Arms? Still here. Excellent. Legs?

Seem to be in working order. Move on to the bigger stuff. Look out the window. Buildings still standing. Traffic moving briskly. Sky not only not falling but full of clouds, the sun trying to peek through.

VIEWS Taking Rick inventory Morrissey is necessary because of the long-held suspicion that the end of the world would be tied to a Cubs World Series title. But Thursday dawned the way most other dawns do, although if it stayed up as late as most of us did, it was groggy.

That the Cubs are World Series champs for the first time in 108 years hasn’t fully registered yet. What happened Wednesday night in an 8-7, 10-inning victory over the Indians in Game 7 was so exhilarating and so taxing that most people I saw afterward appeared to have gone 15 rounds with a professional boxer and a whiskey bottle. And they hadn’t even played in the game. As the innings went by, all I could think of was that this is what bearing quintuplets must feel like.

The parade to honor the Cubs is Friday, and it figures to be the parade to end all parades. Buses full of champions will roll down city streets, and throngs of adoring fans will scream, sing and wave flags. But let’s take a moment to remember the journey that got the Cubs and their public to that point. The ride, from beginning to end, was fueled by fun.

This was a likeable team run by Joe Maddon, a funhouse manager who brought magicians and innovation to the job. His slogan for 2016, “Embrace the Target,” set the tone for the season: The Cubs, who were the clear favorites to win the World Series all year, wouldn’t run away from expectations. They would embrace them, own them and laugh gregariously in the face of them. Sure, the Cubs might have won Game 7 in spite of their manager’s meddling, but believe me, no one is going to be thinking about that in the coming months and years.

This season will be remembered for the hitting of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo, the pitching of Jon Lester and the brilliance of Kyle Hendricks. It will be remembered for Javy Baez’s fielding wizardry, Aroldis Chapman’s blazing

City to honor champion Cubs today with parade, rally CHICAGO – Ecstatic Cubs fans are expected to amass downtown today for a parade and rally to honor the new World Series champions.

The celebration of the Cubs’ first title in 108 years will kick off when team buses leave Wrigley Field at 10 a.m. for an official launch of the parade at 11 a.m. The procession will begin at the intersection of famed Michigan Avenue and Oak Street, heading south, then continue along Columbus Drive to Grant Park for a noon rally.

“The City of Chicago could not be more proud of the Cubs, and we are going to throw them – and their fans – a celebration worthy of the history the team made last night,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel said fastball, Jake Arrieta’s high-wire act and David Ross’ infectious enthusiasm.

And this season will be remembered for Kyle Schwarber, who hardly played in it. You can’t make up stories such as Schwarber’s because they would be dismissed as fanciful. The kid blew out his knee in his second game of the regular season and then went through months of rehab with the idea of returning healthy for the

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has proclaimed Friday as “World Champion Chicago Cubs Day” across the state. Rauner called the win “bigger than baseball.”

“This is a celebration for past and present fans along with all the Cubs’ legends who never gave up hope,” he said.

The noon rally will be at Grant Park’s Hutchinson Field. The celebration comes two days after the Cubs’ dramatic 8-7, extra-inning Game 7 victory in Cleveland.

About 2 million people attended a parade and rally when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 2015, according to city estimates.

– The Associated Press 2017 season. That was everybody’s idea, including Maddon and Theo Epstein’s. But doctors cleared Schwarber to play right before the World Series began, and after only two games in the Arizona Fall League, all Schwarber did was tear through the Indians’ pitching. Nobody does that. No 23-year-old does that. But this one did.

Epstein, the Cubs president of baseball operations, was hired in 2011 and

immediately went about the business of losing. And losing prodigiously. The plan was to tear down for the purpose of building up, and it worked, even though some of us (ahem, me) didn’t like the idea at all. The losing allowed Epstein to get high draft choices, which he used on the likes of Bryant and Schwarber. A trade brought shortstop Addison Russell, another young, talented player. Once the foundation was established, Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer convinced the veteran Lester to sign with the Cubs as a free agent for the 2015 season. That was the first real indication that it was finally time to win.

And win they did. The Cubs won 103 regular-season games in 2016, the most in the big leagues, then beat the Giants in a National League Division Series and the Dodgers in the NL Championship Series. And, finally, Cleveland, which hasn’t won a World Series since 1948.

It’s real. It finally happened. And as far as I can tell, we all are still here.

Crawford, Hawks shut out Colorado

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is looking for a more complete effort from his team. Pretty much everyone except Corey Crawford.

Hard to argue with the way Crawford is playing right now.

The veteran goaltender made 38 saves in his second shutout in three games, helping the Hawks beat the Colorado Avalanche, 4-0, Thursday night for their fourth straight victory.

“Just trying to get better every game,” Crawford said. “Feeling good with reading the play. The conditioning’s there, too. Feeling sharp every game. I just go out there and battle.”

Marian Hossa had two goals, Jonathan Toews also scored and the Hawks killed off three more penalties to run their streak to 12 after an awful start to the season. Artemi Panarin added his fifth goal of the season off a slick pass from Patrick Kane in the third.

The Hawks won for the seventh time in nine games, but Quenneville pointed out a couple areas of concern, mostly having to do with puck possession and movement. Of course, he sounded pretty satisfied with the situation in goal.

Colorado dominated parts of the first and second periods, but Crawford was on top of his game again. He stopped Tyson Barrie about 5 minutes into the first, and denied Matt Duchene on a breakaway in the second. He also had a sharp

glove save on Barrie at 9:34 of the third.

“He’s been outstanding,” Quenneville said.

Crawford caught a break when Nathan MacKinnon banged a shot off the left post about 4 minutes into the first, and Hawks defenseman Brent Seabrook helped out by breaking up a 2-on-1 in the second.

“The guys played well,” Crawford said. “PK (penalty kill) was solid again, moving pucks down. It makes it harder on the power play when you’ve got to skate back all the time. It’s just a big game for us.”

Semyon Varlamov made 17 saves for Colorado, which has lost four of five.

“I liked a lot of that game,” coach Jared Bednar said. “We made some mistakes, they capitalized on their chances.”

The Avalanche had a prime chance to jump in front with two power plays in the first, but the Hawks turned away each opportunity. Then Toews and Hossa scored in a 38-second span.

First, Toews poked in a loose puck at 14:25. Then Hossa got free for a breakaway and managed to flick a wrist shot over Varlamov’s glove before sliding into the corner. Hossa celebrated by getting up on his knees and flexing for the cheering crowd.

Hossa beat Varlamov on the glove side again early in the third, making the most of a great stretch pass by defenseman Duncan Keith, and Kane found a streaking Panarin in front at 12:40. It was Kane’s team-high 10th assist.

“It’s a shock, but we worked hard for it at the beginning of the season and we didn’t have the season we wanted – toward the end, especially – but I think we pushed ourselves hard enough to get into the tournament,” she said.

Improve balance to lessen fall risk Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 70s. A friend of mine recently fell and broke her hip. I’d like to avoid a similar fate. What steps can I take to avoid falling?

Dear Reader: Falls send millions of people in the United States to emergency departments each year with broken hips and head injuries. Imbalance is a common cause of falls. Liz Moritz, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital, recommends several strategies to people looking to improve their balance.

• Physical therapy. Physical therapy for balance focuses on three things: the ability of the joints and brain to communicate, the balance system in the ear (the vestibular system) and vision. Exercises such as standing on one foot, first with the eyes open and then with the eyes closed, can help coordinate all three.

Joint flexibility exercises, walking and lower-extremity exercises also can help.

• Muscle strengthening. Core strength is very important for balance. If the abdominal muscles in your core are weak, they cannot support your legs when you’re walking. And if the muscles in your buttocks and hips aren’t strong, they won’t be able to propel you forward. Muscle strengthening exercises can help.

• Tai chi and yoga. Tai chi and yoga make you pay attention to the control and quality of movement, which improves your balance. In tai chi, you practice slow, flowing motions and shift your weight from one limb to another. Yoga incorporates a series of focused postures and breathing. Both exercises increase flexibility, range of motion, leg and core strength and reflexes.

• Vision correction. If your vision is impaired, your risk of falling increases

• Assistive walking devices. A cane or a walker can complement your balance and give you more stability and confidence walking. Walkers are available with wheels intended for different terrain, lockable brakes, seats, baskets and other features such as headlights. Canes are available with various handgrips and bases.

Balance is one of those things we take for granted. In most of us, it becomes worse as we enter the last half of our lives. But we often don’t notice it – until suddenly we do.

I remember the moment when I noticed it. A light bulb in a high ceiling fixture needed replacing. So I did what I’d done before, though not for quite a while.

I got out the tall ladder and started to climb. Halfway up, it suddenly struck me: I wasn’t very steady. This was not a good idea. Indeed, it was a bad idea.

Our daughter, a young Thai adult, is socially immature. Her mother and I are American citizens, and we recently brought her to the U.S. on a tourist visa to expose her to Western culture. While she was there, a suitor – who is nearly 40, divorced, with two small kids – manipulated her. After she returned to Thailand, she continued communicating with him on Facebook.

The guy flew to Thailand, secretly married her and left the country. He now is in the process of acquiring a spousal immigration visa, and we are desperately afraid of losing our daughter.

We’re not convinced she’s in love with him.

We think she’s just trying to escape her Tiger Mom, who insists on Thai culture, respect and adherence to family values.

We are considering appealing to the government requesting denial of the visa request. Your take? – Concerned Dad In Thailand Dear Concerned Dad: What this man did is reprehensible. Because you don’t know him, one has to wonder if anything he told your daughter about himself is true – including his age, marital status and whether he is a parent.

Dear Abby: I’ve been with “Derek” for two months. We’re both 14, and had an on-and-off friendship before it started.

Derek has a history of mental illness (including depression and anxiety). Lately, he has started talking about things like college plans and even marriage. Since South did not have a short suit, probably he should have doubled. If South had obtained a diamond ruff (which would have been a tough assignment), the contract would have gone down three.

At trick five, West was not sure what to do. If East had the club ace, leading that suit would have likely resulted in down two. Here, though, it would have cost the contract.

Instead, West shifted to a diamond, which gave the defenders two spades and one diamond. But if it turned out that South had the ace-queen of diamonds, when West got in with his spade queen, he would have tried a club. Assuming East had the ace, this defense would have cost only an undertrick.
