Maybe the reason not many people are willing to seek a seat on city councils or school boards is the complicated filing and geographical areas that make up each city ward or school district townships.

Actually, DeKalb School District 428 is the simplest, while and Sycamore School District 427 is the most complicated.

In District 428, there are three seats up for election and candidates can live anywhere in the district. Petitions are available at the DeKalb County Clerk’s Office, 133 W. State St., Sycamore, at the clerk’s website, dekalb. il.clerkserve.com under 2017 Consolidated Elections.

The filing period for petitions is Dec. 12 through 19. Petitions must have at least 50 signatures of voters who live in the school district. Those not up for election this time are Rick Smith, Kerry Mellott, Fred Davis and Howard Solomon. School board members serve without pay in DeKalb and Sycamore.

In District 427, there is a township system.

No more than three board members can be from the same township, and the district includes Sycamore, Cortland, Mayfield, DeKalb, and Squaw Grove townships. There are two board members from Cortland and one from Sycamore township not up for election in 2017, so only one seat is available in Cortland and two from Sycamore township. Same filing dates apply as DeKalb.

Four out of the seven seats are up for election in April. If that is confusing, call the District 427 office if you need help.

DeKalb has an April City Council election in 2nd, 4th and 6th wards for four-year terms, and a two-year term is up for grabs in the 7th Ward. The mayor’s position is also up for election and there are already two candidates who said they intend to run, incumbent May-

If you are in it for the money, you should know that council members get only $5,400 a year and the mayor – who also is the city liquor commissioner – earns $22,500. When the new city clerk is seated after the April election that pay will go from the current $5,000 up to $8,000.

The Sycamore city elections also will be held next April. Mayor Ken Mundy has decided not to seek re-election. At least three people are contemplating running for mayor – City Clerk Candy Smith, council members Rick Kramer and Curt Lang.

There is one seat in each of the four wards up for election in April – seats held by Alan Bauer, Pete Paulson, Steve Braser and Janice Tripp. Also, the city clerk position is open.

The mayor gets paid $25,000 a year including liquor commissioner duties. Council members each get $4,800. The city clerk’s salary is $60,405 a year.

Petitions for all offices also can be found on the clerk’s website printed above, in the 2017 Candidate’s Guide. Candidates must complete a statement of candidacy, submit nonpartisan municipal nominating petitions and an optional loyalty oath. All of the forms are included in the guide.

TODAY’S TALKER U.S. airlines expect Thanksgiving travel increase

The nation’s leading airlines are confident they can handle higher Thanksgiving travel this year partly because more people have signed up for quick-screening programs that are designed to keep airport security lines moving.

An airline trade group said Wednesday that about 27.3 million people will fly on U.S. airlines over a 12-day period that starts Nov. 18 and ends the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. That’s up 2.5 per-

cent from last year. The industry expects airport lines to be manageable because more people have signed up for programs such as TSA PreCheck that screen travelers more quickly.

The Transportation Security Administration said that nearly 4 million people are enrolled in PreCheck, up from 1.75 million a year ago. More than 5 million are in other programs, mostly Global Entry, which is run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Fans old and young gather for Game 7 of World Series

Not only has it been 108 years since their last championship, they needed extra innings to win this one.

DeKalb residents gathered around TVs on Wednesday night for the climactic Game 7 of the World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians.

A quiet nervousness that blanketed onlookers in the downtown DeKalb bars gave way to crazed praise after Dexter Fowler’s game-opening solo home run, the first leadoff homer in a World Series Game 7. The enthusiasm was carried over into every replay of Kris Bryant sliding into home in the fourth inning.

Jon Woods, a patron at Lord Stanley’s, said the feeling he had after that inning was indescribable.

“I wish my grandpa was alive to see this,” Woods said.

The nerves returned after the Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but shortly dissipated after David Ross, the oldest player to appear in a World Series at 39, hit a solo home run.

In a see-saw game, the Cubs scored two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the Indians, 8-7, and finish a dramatic comeback as world champions.

The Cubs came into Game 7 as the underdogs, with a predicted 46 percent chance of winning the World Series.

They last won the World Series in 1908, when the world was different. Women would be denied suffrage for 12 more years in the United States, the Ford Model T was in its first year of mass production, Teddy Roosevelt, while still in the White House, advocated for Howard Taft’s presidential nomination.

The Cubs would take six more shots at the title before their final appearance in the series in the final year of World War II. Jane Astian saw that Cubs team in action that summer at Wrigley Field when she was 18.

Ideal Industries CEO shares growth strategies

DeKALB – For a company to see success as has Ideal Industries, the Sycamore-based manufacturing company that turned 100 this year, its leaders must be open to two key factors: change and risk, CEO and chairman Jim James said.

James shared strategies for company growth Wednesday during his keynote speech at the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.’s annual State of the County address.

“Before we really could grow, one of the things we had to do was make sure our foundation was strong,” James said.

“When we talk about foundation, it’s not just about your process, your procedures, your operational abilities, but your foundation includes things like your willingness to change.”

J. Walter Becker founded Ideal Industries in 1916 in Chicago and moved it to Sycamore in 1924. Members of his family still are in charge of running the company today.

James said Ideal Industries is at a point where it may need to transition again for continued growth while its products have high market shares, and for that to happen, everyone from the family to management and employees need to be on board with mixing things up.

“An organization needs to be able to change,” James said. “When you’re a 100-year-old company, over that hundred years, you’ve had to transform a couple of different times.”

James said taking risks also is important for a company, but those risks need to be calculated and thought out.

“People think that’s an easy thing to do, but it’s not,” he said. “People don’t like change. They don’t like risk, and we still have parts of our organization that don’t like risk. The ability to take risks is so critical, but you can’t just be out there willy-nilly and free-flowing. You’ve got to have the ability to take the opportunities and seize them and move forward.”

Paul Borek, executive director of the DCEDC, said the organization has been giving State of the County addresses for 29 years, but members decided a few years ago to include significant keynote speakers as well.

Borek updated local business representatives and city officials in the audience on various developments within the county, such as the DeKalb County Jail expansion project and new businesses opening.

He also spoke about the importance of collaborations and internship programs with Northern Illinois University and Kishwaukee College in creating a produc-

“Partnerships with our outstanding educational and leadership institutions are critical to economic development,” Borek said. “Northern Illinois University is the most significant economic engine in DeKalb County. It’s economic impact on the northern Illinois region is estimated at $895 million; it employs over 9,000 workers, and another 12,000 jobs depend on the university.”

Borek said James was chosen as the keynote speaker because Ideal Industries is a “world class company” within the community that is committed to innovation and new product development.

“It’s just fascinating how Ideal has grown, and how the community can potentially grow with Ideal,” he said.

Police cite truck driver after crash injuries two DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Police cited a truck driver for failure to yield and driving a semitrailer that was too long after a crash that sent two Shabbona residents to the hospital.

Terry Weber, 30, of the 4500 block of Douglas Road, Oswego, was driving a 2000 International semitrailer east on Perry Road when he failed to yield at the intersection of Route 23, according to a

news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. Weber struck the front driver’s side of a 2014 Ford Escape that was heading north on Route 23.

Leslie Larson, 83, of the 400 block of Cherokee Avenue, Shabbona, the driver the Ford Escape, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital along with passenger Dolores Larson, 78, of the 400 block of Cherokee Avenue, Shabbona.

Weber was cited for failure to yield and having an overlength semitrailer, according to the release.

911 board calls for redundancy after outage

browland@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Some of the corrupted software that caused a temporary 911 outage in September remains in the system and still needs to be removed, a communications company executive told the DeKalb County E-911 Board.

“Further investigations have revealed that part of the corrupted software programming still exists,” Frontier Communications General Manager Thomas Kuschman told the board at a meeting Wednesday afternoon. “Frontier has developed a complete remedy solution with Genband to go in and remove and replace all affected software involved with the delivery of E-911 services.”

Frontier plans to do that at 11 p.m.

Nov. 15 during scheduled maintenance time.

Frontier runs the 911 system in several areas around the state, including this one. The system went down Sept. 20 and affected the more than 105,000 DeKalb County residents as well thousands more in Ogle, Stephenson and Boone counties.

“The DeKalb Central Office is a critical network element of the Fron-

tier and nationwide long-distance network,” Kuschman said. “The equipment handles tens of thousands of local long-distance and cellular calls every single day.”

It also provides radio traffic for fire, police and ambulance services.

Kuschman described it as “fully redundant.”

He went into technical details about what caused the outage and how the company responded.

At times, he faced sharp questioning from board members, particularly Sandwich Police Chief James Bianchi.

Bianchi asked why the needed spare parts weren’t on site. Kuschman said the parts had to be brought in the next day from other places in Illinois and Wisconsin.

“How come those weren’t on site prior to that event with DeKalb being a national hub as you described it?”

Bianchi asked. “Why didn’t you have the parts on scene instead of having to go throughout the Midwest to get the parts you need.”

Kuschman said the card failure that corrupted the software “was not a foreseen circumstance that anyone could have anticipated.”

Bianchi asked why the parts were

stored at other sites and if those sites were deemed more important than the operations in DeKalb. Kuschman said they weren’t more important and that he didn’t know why the spare parts weren’t on site. He said he would research it.

DeKalb County Administrator Gary Hanson asked why the system could be called “redundant” when it “appears it wasn’t redundant.”

“There’s one CML router that exists in the DeKalb seal and there’s only one card that feeds the circuits to that box, and that card, for the first time since it was installed in 1980, corrupted,” Kuschman said. “So we’ve never had a circuit card failure of any mention in almost 36 years.”

Hanson also asked when the system would be made redundant.

Kuschman said the company would “look toward that.” But after further questioning from Bianchi and others, he made a commitment to do so.

Kuschman described the company’s response to the outage as “an allhands-on-deck” event during which no one went home for 50 hours.

DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery said “we cannot fail again.”

“What I’ve heard today No. 1 is a

commitment that we’re going to look for resources to address a problem that, like it or not, should have been addressed but wasn’t addressed, but we’re committed to work together to make that happen,” he said. “I’m taking that as a commitment from Frontier to this board and to this community to do the right thing. “ However, Lowery also sought to put the scope of problem in perspective. He pointed out that 85 percent of DeKalb County’s 911 call traffic comes from cellular phones, which although they may have been delayed, ultimately went through.

“There’s no question that it was a serious problem – I’m not trying to mitigate the seriousness of this problem at all. But if we’re cognizant that there was a backup from a cellular perspective, I don’t think things were as bad as they may have been portrayed or perceived.”

The 911 system, he said, was never completely taken out.

Lowery then singled out an editorial in the Daily Chronicle that was critical of the board. He said the editorial made “scathing” and “baseless comments” about the board.

“When our community hears that, they feel that this board is inactive, that it’s not doing the right thing,” Lowery said. “My assertion is that this board is doing the right thing. ... The rhetoric in that editorial was not only misleading, it was inaccurate and alarming to the community. So who has done the most damage?”

However, he said that the board must put any emotional response to the events behind it and “continue

to move forward.” He specifically pointed to the board’s work to bring so-called “next generation” technology to DeKalb County that would eliminate reliance on the system that was responsible for the outage.

Glenna Johnson, the 911 coordinator for the board, said that DeKalb County would be the first in the state to bring that next generation 911 system online.

Lowery also asked that Frontier keep the board apprised of developments after the Nov. 15 operation to remove the corrupted software and a timeline for progress toward redundancy.

WEST CHICAGO – Tears fill Dom Errichiello’s eyes when he thinks about what he witnessed during World War II. The 91-year-old was part of the third assault wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day, where he hid under a pile of his dead comrades’ bodies to save his own life.

At the Battle of the Bulge, he was among a group of nine soldiers captured by the Germans. When they planned an escape and simultaneously ran in different directions, he was one of only two survivors.

“I’ll never forget that,” he said. “I don’t remember all my kids’ birthdays, or my grandkids’, but I remember those days. It was gruesome.”

As an Army veteran, Errichiello never piloted a plane.

“Here’s my plane, right here, these two legs,” he said with a smile. “We walked thousands of miles from the beach, up and through Berlin.”

But last month, Errichiello and several other veterans who reside in the Windsor Park retirement community in Carol Stream had a chance to fly in the front seat of a two-person, 1941 blue and yellow Stearman biplane.

CHICAGO – The former chairman of a failed suburban Chicago bank is headed to prison for five years after pleading guilty to fraud and theft from the U.S. Treasury Department’s bank-bailout program.

Medical marijuana’s 1st year ends with 12K patients

SPRINGFIELD – Next week brings the anniversary of legal medical marijuana sales in Illinois, and the program is growing steadily. Patients with state approval to buy marijuana now number about 12,000.

The state released new monthly figures Wednesday. Retailers sold $4.1 million in marijuana products during October, marking another month of increasing sales.

Last month’s figures bring the total retail sales in Illinois to $28 million since purchasing began Nov. 9, 2015.

“But then when they get back, they see this huge change,” he said. “Their personality, it just shows. They’re suddenly 20 years younger. They have more energy. They can’t wait to get off the plane and tell other people about it.”

Ray Smith, 84, said he was excited to take the flight, but he looked a tad nervous as he was fastened into the seat by volunteer pilot Tim Newton, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who flew combat missions over Iraq and Bosnia. Smith is a post-Korean War Army veteran who worked in the Pentagon and served as the editor of a Fort McNair newspaper in Washington, D.C. The sun shined brightly in a cloudless, blue sky as Smith strapped on a canvas helmet and Newton fired up the engine, kicking the front propeller into a dizzying spin.

“Ready to go fly?” Newton asked.

Smith gave a thumbs-up.

When they landed 15 minutes later, Smith couldn’t stop smiling. He raved about the views from the low altitude, noted how cold it was up in the sky and talked about how special it was to share the moments with a combat veteran.

“We’ve very fortunate as veterans to have this kind of recognition,” he said.

The number of dispensaries continues to grow, too, with 46 now licensed to sell medical marijuana.

Chicago teachers approve contract with public schools

CHICAGO – The Chicago Teachers Union has approved a contract its leaders negotiated with the Chicago Public Schools.

The union announced late Tuesday that more than 70 percent of its more than 27,000 members voted to accept the tentative agreement.

Union President Karen Lewis said that with the vote, teachers now can focus their energies on their students.

In a statement, schools CEO Forrest Claypool said that families now know their children will remain in school and continue their academic gains.

The four-year proposal negotiated last month averted a strike that would have affected about 390,000 students.

But Trump marched ahead in his third multiday visit to the Sunshine State in recent weeks.

The Republican nominee lashed out at “Crooked Hillary” in Miami, predicting that a Clinton victory would trigger an “unprecedented and protracted constitutional crisis” as federal investigators probe the former secretary of state’s email practices.

Conceding nothing in the state, Clinton also has been a frequent visitor. She posed for pictures and shook hands during a surprise visit to a South Florida Caribbean-American neighborhood Wednesday morning.

Both sides agree the New York businessman has virtually no chance to win the presidency without Florida’s trove of 29 electoral votes.

Clinton has been ahead there in opinion polls, but Democrats acknowledge that the FBI’s renewed attention to her has helped rally reluctant Republicans behind their nominee. That’s given Trump an enthusiasm boost in Florida and across Midwestern battlegrounds long considered reliably blue territory.

Obama, the nation’s first black president, offered an urgent message to North Carolina voters on Wednesday: “The fate of the Republic rests on your shoulders.”

He also criticized Trump’s history of sexist comments and his initial reluctance to disavow white supremacists.

They continue to rally behind the Republican nominee, although he rejects that support.

“If you accept the support of Klan sympathizers,” Obama said, “then you’ll tolerate that support when you’re in office.”

At the same time, Clinton allies are speaking directly to black voters in a new advertising campaign running in Ohio, North Carolina and Florida. The ad from the pro-Clinton Priorities USA shows white Trump supporters screaming at and pushing black protesters, along with Obama warning that voters would lose “everything” if Trump wins.

As the final-days scramble for votes intensifies, Florida remains perhaps the nation’s most critical swing state.

The Trump campaign knows there is no realistic path to the White House without Florida, where polls give Clinton a narrow lead.

Suspect in officer deaths has history of provocations

DES MOINES, Iowa – A white man with a history of racial provocations and confrontations with police ambushed and fatally shot two white officers Wednesday in separate attacks as they sat in their patrol cars, authorities said.

Police took 46-year-old Scott Michael Greene into custody hours after the killings and less than three weeks after he argued with officers who removed him from a high school football game where he had unfurled a Confederate flag near black spectators.

Greene flagged down an Iowa Department of Natural Resources employee in a rural area west of Des Moines, identified himself and asked that the employee call 911. Sheriff’s deputies and state patrol officers took him into custody.

He’s suspected in the early morning slayings of 24-year-old Justin Martin, who had been with the force in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale since 2015, and 38-year-old Sgt. Anthony Beminio, who joined the Des Moines department

in 2005.

Greene was taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown health issues and was to be questioned later at Des Moines police headquarters, Sgt. Paul Parizek said.

Police responded to a report of shots fired shortly after 1 a.m. and found the Urbandale officer. Authorities from several agencies soon saturated the area. About 20 minutes later, they discovered the Des Moines officer, who had responded to the first shooting, Parizek said.

The shootings happened less than 2 miles apart, and both took place along main streets that cut through residential areas.

In the first shooting, investigators believe the gunman walked up to the officer’s car and fired more than two dozen rounds.

“I wouldn’t call it a confrontation,” Urbandale Police Chief Ross McCarty said. “I don’t think he may have even been aware that there was a gunman next to him.”

In the video, officers can be seen asking Greene to leave school property while he insists he was assaulted and his flag stolen. He demands officers file theft and assault charges, saying someone hit his head and grabbed the flag.

In a back-and-forth with officers that lasts for nearly 11 minutes, officers said they could take a report but they cannot let Greene back inside the stadium because the school has banned him from the property.

Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Five officers were killed July 7 in Dallas. Three more were killed later that month in Baton Rouge.

Race was an issue in those cases and others invlving unarmed black men killed by officers. Greene is white, as were the officers.

Greene appeared to have issues with people of other races.

Politicians are ones rigging elections

Donald Trump is right: This election will be rigged, but not for the reasons he claims and not in California. Trump warns, without evidence, that huge numbers of undocumented immigrants and dead people will vote. His irresponsible claims of widespread fraud aside, election results are cooked in much of the nation by politicians who draw district boundaries in ways that ensure incumbents and members of the party in power will win.

Outside California, politicians score easy points by jeering at supposedly crazy ideas that originate here. But good-government types in many other states understand that a truly independent redistricting commission is a reform worth copying.

Californians’ votes will matter in several congressional and legislative races Tuesday, thanks to Charles Munger Jr. A quirky guy who happens to have a lot of money, Munger concluded rightly that gerrymandered districts are anathema to democracy. And so he funded initiatives in 2008 and 2010 that created the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, which is responsible for drawing legislative and congressional lines.

Then as now, politicians don’t give up power willingly. Legislators and Gov. Jerry Brown starve the commission by allocating a mere $90,000 annually to fund it and restrict it to no more than one half-time employee, who works from her home in Orangevale. The commission doesn’t have money for an office.

And yet, the commission’s creation is proving to be among this state’s most far-reaching reforms.

According to the Cook Political Report, seven of California’s 53 congressional seats could swing either way in this upcoming election. Another six Assembly seats and three Senate seats are competitive.

California’s congressional delegation and the new Legislature will be heavily Democratic. But because

of fairly drawn district lines, and the state’s top-two primary system, candidates know that to win they must appeal to independent voters and voters of the opposite parties.

No fewer than 18 Democrats in the Legislature, plus several Republicans, will be moderates.

Contrast that with the Texas congressional delegation, which has 25 Republicans and 11 Democrats.

Political experts recently concluded that Texas, which for years has been reliably Republican, could swing to either Trump or Hillary Clinton.

But only one congressional seat in the Lone Star State is thought to be in doubt.

That one is held by Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican whose district runs 800 gerrymandered miles between San Antonio and El Paso.

Hurd’s seat is not the worst example of the dark artwork of Republicans who control redistricting. The Democratic city of Austin, the nation’s 11th largest city and the largest city without its own congressional representative, is chopped up among five Republican members of Congress and one Democrat.

Based on polls, Trump likely will lose on Election Day, perhaps by a landslide. But because Republicans dominate redistricting in several states, they probably will keep control of the House.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced the creation of a campaign organization that will focus on redistricting reform, and President Barack Obama said he will devote part of his post-presidential time to the effort.

That would be for the good, so long as they advocate for independent commissions that draw lines without regard to party registration or where incumbents live. For guidance, they should study the playbook written by the quirky California Republican Charles Munger Jr., whose money set up California for a fairer and more democratic fight.

Vote ‘Yes’ for Safe Roads Amendment

To the Editor: On Tuesday, before casting a vote for president, Illinois voters will be asked to decide an important issue that can help repair and fortify decaying roads and bridges across the state, put more people to work, and improve the quality of life for all residents in Illinois.

The Safe Roads Amendment will prevent lawmakers from using transportation dollars for other purposes, guaranteeing that money will be spent on what it was meant for: improving our transportation infrastructure and making our roadways safer.

About half of Illinois roads and 4,200

bridges are in poor condition; our public transportation systems need modernizing and repair. Not surprisingly, outdated infrastructure is tremendously expensive to fix and maintain. Making matters worse, transportation funding in Illinois often runs dry. During the past 10 years, the state’s financial woes have resulted in lawmakers raiding $6 billion worth of transportation revenue.

One of Illinois’ greatest assets is its transportation infrastructure. By making the necessary investments, our transportation infrastructure combined with the work ethic of our people should make Illinois impossible to compete with.

Investments in transportation infrastructure strengthen our economy and create jobs, ultimately generating more revenue for education and other critical services needed for our children, the elderly and the most vulnerable in society. It is not a zero-sum game as some critics suggest.

We have a chance to make our transportation infrastructure safe for our families and loved ones, and we need to think beyond quick fixes and short-term patchwork solutions to work toward a safer, state-of-the-art-transportation system that can compete on the world stage in a 21st century economy.

The Safe Roads Amendment will fortify our roads and bridges, protect transportation dollars, hold the government accountable, boost our economy and put Illinoisians back to work. Let’s not risk this opportunity to make a difference and ensure our voices are heard Tuesday. Vote “Yes” for the Safe Roads Amendment.

No escape from black hole of Trumponomics Wilbur Ross and Peter Navarro, two advisers to Donald Trump, argue in the Wall Street Journal that the federal government would have just as much revenue with Trump’s big tax cuts as it would have without them (and so those tax cuts will neither increase the deficit nor require large spending cuts).

They claim that even organizations which tend to find that tax cuts on investment boost economic growth, such as the Tax Foundation, are underestimating the benefits of Trump’s plan because they are not taking into account the pro-growth effects of his trade, energy and regulatory policies.

Ross and Navarro refer readers to a paper they wrote for the campaign to get a more accurate picture of how these policies would affect the economy. The paper’s method is to start with the Tax Foundation’s lowest estimate of how much revenue

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru the Trump plan would lose, which is $2.6 trillion over 10 years, and then explain how each ignored factor – energy, trade and regulation – would eat away at that estimate.

One problem: The Tax Foundation’s lowest estimate assumes Trump would not really follow through on his statements that he would apply his proposed 15 percent tax rate on corporations to businesses that pay taxes under the individual income tax.

How Trump would handle this issue is a black hole from which no information can escape. If Trump makes good on his promises, the Tax Foundation’s revenue-loss estimate

rises to $3.9 trillion.

It’s trade, more than regulatory or energy policy, that drives the Ross-Navarro analysis. The alleged growth benefits of Trump’s trade policy are responsible for nearly three-fourths of the improvement in their deficit estimates.

Their methodology on this point is simple: They assume that Trump will negotiate better trade deals so that the current $500 billion U.S. trade deficit drops to zero, and assume further that this change in our trade balance is accomplished without reducing consumption or investment. Every dollar in reduced imports, that is, would instead go to an American producer, and nothing we do to reduce imports would hurt the U.S. economy at all.

All of these assumptions are extremely dubious. Take the argument

by Ross and Navarro that it would be easy to eliminate the trade deficit.

They rest this argument heavily on the claim that other countries’ tax systems are an unfair trade practice that we just need to combat. But they completely misunderstand those tax systems, which are not, as they claim, “backdoor tariffs” on American products.

I’m left with two questions. First, why the conservatism? If it’s so easy and beneficial to eliminate a $500 billion trade deficit, why didn’t Ross and Navarro promise Trump would work twice as hard and create a $500 billion trade surplus? Second, why did they produce a paper at all?

They could have just said that Trump is a great man and will make everything work out just fine. Take away the verbiage and the spuriously precise numbers, and that’s all they have done.

Consider that for police, even hesitation can be deadly The fatal Oct. 4 shooting of 26-year-old Zachary Sutton by two Springdale, Arkansas, police officers was tragic. It wasn’t the first time they had pulled over Sutton, who was riding a scooter.

One of the officers can be heard on video of the incident explaining why.

“I’ve told you three times I know for sure in less than 10 days. You can’t be driving any motorized vehicle, man. Your license is suspended for DWI,” one officer tells Sutton.

In seconds, the “routine” traffic stop turns into a life-and-death moment. Sutton draws a handgun and fires toward the officers. He runs.

This is the moment critics of some officer-involved shootings suggest the officers should aim to wound.

It seems they’ve watched too many

old westerns in which the good guy shoots, then (ding!) the bad guy’s gun flies out of his hand. It’s a ludicrous expectation.

Hitting anything in such adrenaline-inducing moments is difficult.

Consider this: The two officers, faced with a man who fired on them and presented a threat to the community, fired 12 bullets in just seconds. Sutton died of a single gunshot wound.

Washington County Prosecutor Matt Durrett, using information gathered by Washington County Sheriff’s Office investigators, said Oct. 18 he considered the officers’ actions justified.

For those who cared about Sutton, our condolences. His death is a horrible outcome.

But we’re glad those officers were

able to go home that night.

If anyone has ever wondered why officers need to always be on guard, watch the video of Zachary Sutton’s life-ending behavior. Why draw the weapon? What made the potential for death an acceptable risk? Why was Sutton traveling with a handgun in his waistband? We’ll never know what other violence was avoided because these officers were out protecting the community they serve.

Does one “good” shooting excuse other officer-involved shootings with more dubious justifications? Not at all. A shooting is either justified according to law and departmental policy or it’s not. Every shooting needs a thorough, independent review and bad shootings must lead to charges and, sometimes, reforms.

But officers also deserve a benefit of a doubt in the court of public opinion until all the information has been evaluated. Too often in recent years we’ve seen a rush to judgment and demands for firings and prosecutions based on nothing but raw emotion.

A female Chicago officer was savagely beaten, to unconsciousness, in early October. She didn’t draw her weapon although she feared for her life. Why? Because she was afraid of the media attention and criticism for her family and her agency if she shot her attacker.

How many officers should communities be willing to lose to such hesitation in the midst of violence?

None should be the answer.

Ending more than a century of flops, futility and frustration, the Cubs won their first title since 1908, outlasting the Cleveland Indians, 8-7, in 10 innings of a Game 7 thriller Wednesday.

Lovable losers for generations, the Cubs nearly let this one get away, too.

All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman blew a three-run lead with two outs in the eighth when Rajai Davis hit a tying homer.

But the Cubs, after tormenting their fans one more time, came right back after a 17-minute rain delay before the top of the 10th.

Ben Zobrist hit an RBI double and

Miguel Montero singled home a run to make it 8-6. Davis delivered an RBI single with two outs in the bottom half, but Mike Montgomery closed it out, and the celebration was on.

Blue-clad Cubs fans filled nearly the entire lower deck behind the Cubs dugout at Progressive Field, singing “Go! Cubs! Go!” Manager Joe Maddon’s team halted the longest title drought in baseball,

becoming the first club to overcome a 3-1 Series deficit since the 1985 Kansas City Royals.

Cleveland was trying to win its first crown since 1948, but lost the last two games at home.

World Series favorites since spring training, the Cubs led the majors with 103 wins this season. The Cubs then ended more than a century of misery for their loyal fans – barely.

CLEVELAND – As Anthony Rizzo got to second base after driving Kris Bryant home with a hit to right in the fifth inning of Game 7 of the biggest World Series contest in a century, he held his arms above his head like a boxer on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Then he coiled and threw a pair of combination punches in the air toward Cubs teammates.

Rizzo has been doing this Rocky thing since the Cubs lost Game 4 at home Saturday to fall into a 3-1 hole in the Series. He played the movie in the clubhouse before each game, had a Rocky-heavy sound mix played at Wrigley as the Cubs worked out before Game 5 and threatened to dress up like the fictional Italian Stallion for the team’s Halloween travel day between games.

“And he’s quoting him in the dugout during the game,” manager Joe Maddon said. “He was yelling something about ‘Mick’ [on Tuesday].

The whole game, he’ll be sitting behind me there before his at-bat, and he’s throwing Rocky-isms out at us.

I think it’s great.”

Said Rizzo as the Cubs tried to pull off the first 3-1 World Series comeback since the 1985 Kansas City Royals: “We just pulled it all out. We’re going to battle. We’ve got to go the distance.”

Rizzo wasn’t always in character.

In the dugout during the game, he smiled huge at veteran teammate David Ross and said, “I can’t control myself. I’m an emotional wreck.”

Ross’ response: “Wait ’til the ninth. It’s going to get worse.”

Ross: Going, going, gone!

Ross, who has been on his own emotional thrill ride through this postseason while counting down the hours to retirement, took a parting shot with a home run off Indians bullpen ace Andrew Miller in the sixth inning.

It extended the Cubs’ lead to 6-3

after the Indians had rallied in the fifth for a pair of runs on a crazy wild pitch from Jon Lester that Ross couldn’t contain.

Lester and Ross had entered together in relief of Kyle Hendricks and catcher Willson Contreras earlier that inning.

“Might as well take it all the way to the last day,” Ross said as the Cubs prepared for Game 7. “I’ve known for a while it could come to an end all of a sudden, good or bad, at any point. Now I know [Game 7] will be my last baseball game.

“It’s scary in one sense and kind of cool in another. Game 7 – I’ve never been part of a Game 7 of a World Series.”

INVASION OF THE TICKET SNATCHERS

Cubs fans poured into Progressive Field for Game 7, with an even bigger number than the night before for Game 6.

Stubhub said up to 60 percent of transactions in the run-up to game time came from the Chicago area.

Standing-room tickets, available for $1,000 on Tuesday night, were going for $750 by 6 p.m. CDT, two hours before game time.

Bouagnon’s big day keeps Huskies’ bowl hopes alive

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois senior running back Joel Bouagnon simply laughed Tuesday when asked if he got jealous after quarterback Anthony Maddie rushed for four touchdowns against Buffalo the previous game.

Bouagnon had a career-high five rushing touchdowns and the Huskies kept their bowl hopes alive with a 4520 win over Bowling Green on senior night Tuesday at Huskie Stadium.

“I don’t know, I guess I had to oneup him,” smiled Bouagnon, who also had 134 rushing yards and averaged 5.2 yards per carry in the win.

It was the most rushing touchdowns by a Huskies since Garrett Wolfe scored five in 2005.

Bouagnon, who moved into sixth place all-time with 32 career touchdowns, had struggled this year getting into the end zone after he had 18 rushing scores last year, which was tied for the 10th most in the nation. Coming into the game against Bowling Green, he only had a 2-yard touchdown run in

a 31-24 win over Ball State.

He said after the win against Bowling Green that he wasn’t worried about his touchdown numbers. Instead, he was more focused on the Huskies getting wins.

With the victory over the Falcons (1-8 overall, 0-5 in MAC East) on Tuesday, the Huskies (3-6 overall, 3-2 in MAC West) have won two straight but need to run the table in order to get to their ninth consecutive bowl. It also improved their impressive dominance of November games, with the Huskies now 23-1 in games played in the month.

On Tuesday, it was a throwback performance by Bouagnon, who made a living off getting short yardage touchdowns last season. Out of the 18 scores last year, 10 came on runs of 6 yards or less – and nine came on 5 yards or less.

Against the Falcons, he had rushing scores of 15, 14, 6, 2 and 1.

“He’s tough to stop, he’s tough to stop,” Bowling Green coach Mike Jinks said. “I’ll tell you, there was one time they got a heck of a push, but he’s a load. He’s a good back.”

The 134 rushing yards were not a

season-high – he had 153 against Ball State – and it’s only the second time this season he’s had more than 75 yards.

However, his performance in his final true home game gave the Huskies’ their second straight game scoring 40-plus points after they trounced Buffalo, 44-7, on Oct. 22.

“I thought he danced and left a couple of cuts out there early on, but after that, he really settled down,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “The emotion of senior night can do that, but he settled down and played like he has all year. He’s played hard all year.”

Equally important as his five touchdowns, Bouagnon was a major reason why the Huskies went 9 for 15 on third down against Bowling Green, which came in allowing a conference-worst 45.1 points per game.

The Huskies gave it to Bouagnon five times on third-and-short on the night, and he came up with five first downs.

Four of those came on scoring drives – each of which ended with a touchdown.

On a third-and-2 during the Huskies’ first drive of the game, Bouagnon came up with four yards. Four players later,

he scored on a 14-yard touchdown.

Midway through the second quarter, Bouagnon picked up three yards on a third-and-2 and a third-and-1 that kept the 15-play, 75-yard drive alive before Maddie scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to put the Huskies up 24-13.

On NIU’s second drive of the third quarter, it faced a third-and-1 at the 2-yard line and Bouagnon punched it in for his third touchdown.

“He was running tough and not letting one guy bring him down,” said Maddie, who went 20 for 29 with 185 yards and had 93 rushing yards. “Just played a great game, ran the ball really well, had good vision – I was just watching most of the time. It was fun to watch.”

As for Bouagnon, he capped his scoring with a 6-yard run in the closing minutes of the game for his fifth touchdown. He said that he didn’t realize in the moment that he had reached the end zone five times during the game.

But after the fact?

“Now looking at it,” he said calmly, but with a smile. “It’s like, yeah, it was five.”

Huskies playing their best ball of the season, but is it enough for a win against Toledo?

It was far from perfect.

But the Northern Illinois football team’s 45-20 win over Bowling Green on Tuesday was as close to Classic Huskies as they’ve shown all year, and if they don’t have a repeat performance next week, they’ll miss a bowl game for the first time since nine years.

The difference was basically the re-emergence of some names that have been suspiciously missing all season – and it becomes particularly important for a repeat performance next week against Toledo in the ChiTown Showdown at Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday.

Start with Joel Bouagnon. It sure seemed like he would be the centerpiece of the offense for the Huskies (3-6 overall, 3-2 MAC), especially after Drew Hare was lost for year.

The senior ran for 153 yards and a score against Ball State. Not only was that his only 100-yard performance of the year, it was his only rushing touchdown. He scored five times on Tuesday to go with 136 yards.

“I’m not too worried about my personal stats, I’m more worried about the bigger picture of getting wins,” Bouagnon said. “It’s not something that I think about, not something on my mind, I’m just more worried about the game.”

NIU head coach Rod Carey said he thought his senior back ran well, but said it was a team effort.

“Obviously, when you are punching them in when the field gets shrunk like that, that’s a good job of O-line, tight ends, fullbacks, quarterbacks, wide outs,” Carey said. “I mean sending wide outs in there.

I mean Kenny (Golladay) had nine catches but he blocked too and the other guys out there did as well.”

While the two of them obviously need to spread the credit around, the fact of the matter is simple – if

Golladay had nine catches, but just 59 yards and was kept out of the end zone. So even getting less than 7 yards a catch, he was effective at keeping the chains moving.

“Of course I want to make a big play, but at practice (offensive line coach Mike Uremovich) told me, ‘You should catch 15 hitches,’” Golladay said. “So I mean, they were playing off so we took what the defense gave us. We’d take hitches all day. That should be a first down every time.”

There’s still a lot that needs to turn around. Shawun Lurry has been injured and inconsistent. And the defense is still looking vulnerable.

But in a season that seemed lost, the Huskies are making a last stand, with a couple wins in a row and two winnable games lurking after the Rockets – enough to get up to 6-6 and a bowl berth.

None of that happens, of course, without a win against Toledo – and that doesn’t happen without another game like Tuesday.

We’ll pick a president... ... but the search continues for a perfect late-night host

America’s garish presidential election has been a late-night host’s dream come true. The jobs are plentiful, and the jokes write themselves – so much so that everything started to look and sound the same.

Even the audiences sound the same, their laughter and applause forming prolonged Beatlemania-like squeals of agreement, a noise usually heard at actual political rallies. It’s not news to anyone that late-night, over the past four elections, became a way to excite the left and encourage the youth vote through sarcasm and satire.

Late-night audiences have been whooping and barking since the Arsenio Hall days, but this is noise is different, louder, approving of the rant, the tirade, the cutting quip. While watching a recent taping of “Late Night With Seth Meyers” in Washington, D.C.’s Warner Theatre, I was struck by how willing the audience was to over-effuse, whether producers gestured for them to do so or not, ensuring that every single punchline in Meyers’ (certainly sharp) “Weekend Update”-style opening monologue sounded as if Hillary Clinton had secured another electoral-college vote. Laughter has been replaced by shrieking assent.

The jokes also meet one another coming around the corner, unable to John avoid duplication. Take Trump’s reOliver sentment over an Emmy snub, which came up during his last debate with Clinton on Oct. 19. CBS’ “Late Show” host, Stephen Colbert, made a taunting joke that night with two of his own Emmy statuettes (“You know Donald, you really should get one – they’re fantastic”) and then, four nights later on HBO, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver went for what is essentially the same laugh, offering to hand his own recently won Emmy statuette over to Trump in exchange for the candidate’s acceptance of the election’s results. (“That way if you lose, you still win.”)

Oliver isn’t ripping off Colbert, per se. It’s just that there are so many flies buzzing around the same piles of elephant dung, on multiple platforms, all across the overpopulated late-night comedy landscape. What a great ride it’s been for wise-asses everywhere, giving new spark to the predictable shows (HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” for example) and an easy boost to stragglers (such as Chelsea Handler’s halfhearted attempt to bring the after-hours talk format to Netflix). And what a godsend for the geeks in charge of tallying unique visitors and digital hits, as well as network executives still obsessed with claiming victory in late-night.

But the fun’s all going to end – or at least shift considerably – in a few days, and then what?

Perhaps no group becomes more vulnerable Nov. 9 than the crowd of men (Colbert and Oliver, plus Trevor Noah, Meyers, Maher, Chris Hardwick, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien and

– sigh – James Corden, if I absolutely must type his name) and two women (Samantha Bee and Handler) known as late-night hosts, some of them still vying to replace the void left by Jon Stewart, who retired from Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” last year. Nowhere is that burden more acutely felt than on the “Daily Show” itself, where Noah does capable work but has nevertheless drifted off the radar.

Not so long ago, a late-night host’s job was to merely lubricate the release valves on the news-cycle machine. Today’s late-night hosts pursue a more hybrid role – part investigative reporter and part op-ed firebrand. They also played an intimate role in viewers’ lives, as the people we chose to fall asleep with each night. Then the anxiety of Samantha politics stepped in with an onslaught Bee of newly appointed hosts and new shows.

Enough time has passed to ask: Which one of them is doing the best job?

In some ways that can’t be answered, because we’re still trying to answer a different question: What do we want them to be? Hosts? Pundits?

Should they be exclusively male and dress only in a suit and tie? Given the tenor of the times, would it be better if a black host rose to the top? Should they be true-blue American? (Noah is South African; Oliver is British, married to an American; Bee has dual Canadian-American citizenship.)

Do we want someone who is exactly like Stewart, whose die-hard fans still bemoan his departure just as Trump’s campaign took off? Or more like David

Letterman, who, if he could have summoned the energy to do so, would certainly have given both candidates a sardonic vetting?

••• Thirteen months into his “Late Show” run (and after a change in showrunners last spring), Colbert has made a clear case for his seasoned wit, but forget everything else – the gorgeous Ed Sullivan Theater makeover, the blue suits that match the set, the band (it’s probably great fun to catch Jon Batiste and friends in a French Quarter jazz club, but the groove never quite materializes on TV). All that effort simply dragged the show down.

Although still short of Fallon’s “Tonight Show” ratings, Colbert’s “Late Show” numbers have improved, thanks to a doubling-down on all things Trump. During the Republicans’ convention, Colbert revived the fictionally right-wing character that made him famous, delighting fans. Presumably they’ll be even more thrilled when he takes his act to Showtime for a live Election Night special that will take advantage of premium cable’s uncensored playground. But if we keep encouraging Colbert to deviate from his job description, then at some point CBS will have to revisit the task of replacing Letterman.

Colbert, who isn’t afraid of the prurient, routinely delivers some halfway funny skits and sight gags – one recent vintage example had him dragging a chalkboard out for the purposes of making “One Diagram (that) Explains Every Conspiracy Against Trump.” The diagram took on a tumescent shape

Kishwaukee College Theatre set to present ‘Love Letters’ DAILY CHRONICLE The Kishwaukee College production of “Love Letters,” by A. R. Gurney, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 to 12 in the Kishwaukee College Theatre.

The play is directed by Nadine Franklin. Tickets cost $10 for the general public and $8 for students, staff and seniors.

A.R. Gurney is one of the most produced playwrights in the U.S. and is best known for works that examine the American middle class.

He has received the Drama Desk Award, the Rockefeller Award and two Lucille Lortel Awards for his works.

“Love Letters” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1990.

“Love Letters” revolves around a 50-year relationship between Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III told exclusively by letters

written to each other, beginning in childhood.

The play’s seeming simplicity belies the power and emotion it conveys as Melissa and Andrew move forward through their lives and as the impact each age and experience has on the evolution of their interpersonal relationship is revealed.

Patsy Cline tribute can be heard at Sycamore church DAILY CHRONICLE Crazy for Patsy, a Patsy Cline tribute band, will perform at 5 p.m. Nov. 12 at Sycamore United Methodist Church.

Vocalist Jill Sanderson has performed in northern Illinois for the past 20 years. She has appeared in many community theater productions, including “The Fantasticks,” “Oliver!” and “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

Other shows have included “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Into the Woods” at the Clock Tower Dinner Theater in Rockford.

Fareed Haque, on Jill guitar, is a professor of Sanderson classical and jazz guitar at Northern Illinois University. In 2009, he was voted the world’s best guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine. Living in many areas of the world, including Spain, France, Pakistan and Chile, has contributed to his passion for eclectic styles of music. He has performed for the Chicago Philharmonic, and his recordings have been featured under various record labels, including the ultimate jazz record label, Blue Note.

“We have included texts from other feminist work,” Elk said in a news release. “Many of those first wave comments that first wave feminists

spoke need to be heard, even now.”

Elk says the production will use “close quarters to give the experience of being trapped in that room. It will be a minimal space, performed in the round.”

Both are excellent, but it’s hard to escape the feeling of being in an echo chamber. Take the Waffle House measure, for instance: Bee and Oliver each made Waffle House jokes in different episodes recently (his came during a rant about the opioid crisis; hers was in a piece about Catholic hospitals that let dogma guide policies). When flying off the handle about one domestic dumpster fire after another, it seems all roads lead to a Waffle House joke.

That’s because there’s a shorthand language that all the writers for these shows share – one that’s not just about politics but also about class. In criticizing America, they wind up reaching for the same metaphors, and this causes them to make fun of the same things in the same ways. You can agree with all of it (or just some of it) and still get find yourself getting bored.

That’s why, when the electoral mania subsides, late-night must go on searching for its strongest, newest voice. Someone who does it all, from opening monologue to topical comedy bits to trenchant interviews to warm goodnights. Someone who can tuck America in without giving it too many more nightmares.

Meyers reinvigorated “Late Night” by replacing a traditional opening monologue with anchored news parody delivered from a desk – the very thing that made him famous on “Saturday Night Live,” giving viewers the kind of straightforward, Stewartesque satire they craved. Noah, meanwhile, has followed Stewart’s “Daily Show” template to a T for more than a year now, without finding his own spin on it.

••• If Twitterati consensus is a reliable applause-o-meter, then the two people doing the best political satire are the two who are beloved “Daily Show” alumni and can therefore lay the most claim to Stewart’s crown.

Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” and Bee’s “Full Frontal,” the latter on TBS, are both blessed and beset by their shows’ weekly format.

Oliver’s full-throttle, commercial-free, half-hour show hardly stops for a breath, allowing his humor to tackle topics that transcend politics and travel into complicated matters of sloppy policy and unfair lawmaking.

Bee steps in Monday night with a similar approach. Limited to about 22 minutes (with commercial breaks), she zips through her sermonettes and demonstrates how vital a woman’s perspective on politics can be – and how different it is from all those men making jokes about the same debates, rallies and scandals. “Only kindergartners get credit for using their inside voices,” Bee said when others observed that Trump had opened the final debate with noticeably less bombast.

More wisely, Bee has kept the field-reporting segments that she excels at, with less of “The Daily Show’s” wink-wink spoofery and something that’s increasingly rare in late-night: You occasionally catch her in the act of listening, rather than just snarking or spouting.

The Northern Illinois University School of Theatre and Dance’s upcoming production of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman at the end of the 19th century, is a bold, psychological play that is still relevant, according to its guest director, Megan Elk. The play will open today for one weekend only at the NIU Holmes Student Center Diversions Lounge, on the NIU campus in DeKalb.

Although “The Yellow Wallpaper” is considered an historical piece of feminist work, Elk says the play continues to be timely because women are still battling to have a voice.

“I want women to be inspired to use

their voices figuratively and literally,” Elk said in a news release.

Adapted from her original 1892, semi-autobiographical short story of the same name, Gilman’s play tells the story of a new mother suffering from postpartum depression. When she is confined to a single room by her ill-informed husband to cure her, the room’s wallpaper seems to take on a life of its very own. With mysterious and eerie visions manifesting around her, the young woman begins to question her sanity.

Gilman was considered a champion of women’s rights and social change in a time of massive social upheaval in the late 1800s. Through her writing and lectures, she caused people to examine women’s subservient

Dear Dr. K: You’ve written chronic inflam-

mation has been linked to diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Is there anything I can do to fight inflammation without using medications?

Dear Reader: Inflammation in the body is a double-edged sword. Short-lived inflammation, directed by your immune system at invaders such as bacteria or viruses, protects your health.

But sometimes inflammation persists, even when there is no health threat. That’s when it can become your enemy. Many major diseases have been linked to chronic inflammation, including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression and Alzheimer’s.

The good news is powerful tools to combat inflammation can be found in the grocery store. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. He explained components of many common foods have anti-inflammatory effects.

By choosing the right foods, you may be able to reduce your risk of illness. Consistently pick the wrong foods, however, and you might speed up the inflammatory disease process.

The same foods that contribute to inflammation generally are considered bad for our health, so it’s easier to remember them. They also contribute to weight gain, which is itself a risk factor for inflammation.

We used to think what fat did was provide a storehouse of energy for when we needed it, sort of like insulation that protected us against the cold. In the past 20 years, we’ve learned fat cells are little factories that make hormones and immune system chemicals.

These substances influence our appetite, our metabolism – and inflammation.

On the flip side are foods and beverages that reduce the risk of inflammation and chronic disease. Fruits and vegetables are particularly effective. Good choices are blueberries, apples and leafy greens, which are high in natural antioxidants and polyphenols. These are protective compounds found in plants. Nuts and coffee also may be protective.

Include plenty of these anti-inflammatory foods in your diet: • Tomatoes • Olive oil • Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale and collards • Nuts, such as almonds and walnuts • Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines • Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, apples, cherries and oranges • Spices, particularly ginger and turmeric If you’re looking for a dietary plan that closely follows the tenets of anti-inflammatory eating, consider the Mediterranean diet.

Dear Abby: Fall DEAR ABBY is here, and it’s the time we turn Jeanne our clocks back Phillips an hour from daylight saving time. Something everyone also needs to change could save their lives. That “something” is the battery inside household devices that many take for granted – smoke alarms, smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors.

In the U.S., three out of five home fire deaths are caused by fires in homes with no smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. As a firefighter, I have seen these tragedies firsthand. My mission is for no battery to go unchecked.

For the 29th consecutive year, Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs are partnering to educate the public about fire safety by reminding consumers of the importance of checking and changing the batteries not only in smoke alarms, but also every device that helps keep us safe and relaxed in our homes, such as smart thermostats, flashlights, home security systems and other critical devices.

I cannot stress enough the importance of setting aside the few minutes it takes to ensure these devices are working. The IAFC also recommends replacing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors every 10 years. Use the end of daylight saving time as a reminder to prioritize the safety of your home. Cory Doctorow, a Canadian-British blogger, journalist and science fiction author, wrote, “Abnormal is so common, it’s practically normal.”

At the bridge table, the abnormal happens rarely, and most of the time it is missed, especially on defense.

It is hard to make a play that would normally be suicidal but is the only winner on a given deal.

How should West analyze this layout? South is in four spades. West leads the club queen. South wins with his ace and plays a low trump.

From where should West hope to find four tricks?

North’s Jacoby Forcing Raise showed four-plus trumps and at least game-forcing values. South, with a minimum opening bid and no short suit, jumped to game.

Most defenders sitting West would immediately play second hand low at trick two. Then, though, declarer would win on the board and lead another trump. He would lose only one spade and two hearts.

When the dummy appears, the defenders should ask for a timeout so that they can analyze the deal. Here, West can see two defensive tricks: his spade ace and heart king. He should next count the high-card points. He has 10, and dummy holds 14. That leaves 16 for the other two players.

East can have just one high card.

Which one would be useful?

Only the heart ace. West must win the second trick and shift to the heart king. Here, that works perfectly; the defenders take the spade ace, two top hearts and a heart ruff. But if it turned out that South had the heart ace, this play would cost only an overtrick.

Keep counting those points.

Several rare“Heart and Crown”side chairs were sold at a 2016 Skinner auction in Massachusetts.

The high-back chair with molded bannisters, turned legs and a rush seat are part of an old tradition. Furniture makers in Connecticut created this style and used it from about 1740 to 1770. It was an interpretation of the expensive Philadelphia and Boston chairs made at the time.

The top of the back, made with a cut-out heart and a crown-shaped crest, was instead of the curved crest of the formal city chairs. Almost all of the Heart and Crown chairs were painted black or dark brown, and all had the rush seat.

An auctioned chair, 44 3/4 inches high and attributed to Andrew Durand of Milford, Connecticut, is painted black and has the characteristic banisters and turnings. It auctioned for $9,000, which was three times the estimate. *** Q: My aunt gave me a set of dishes that were a wedding present to her.
