CASTELLUCCIO DI NORCIA, Italy – Some houses are collapsed outright, pancaked piles of stones and plaster. A pair of skis stick out. Some are cracked open neatly, exposing living rooms frozen in time.

The central Italian mountain village of Castelluccio di Norcia, among the most heavily hit

by Sunday’s earthquake, is known for the beautiful blossoms of its lentil fields and its historic charm. Now it’s a ghost town.

With the roads cut off, almost all of the 300 inhabitants were evacuated by helicopter. They all survived after an earlier quake in August prompted them to move into safer housing such as camper vans or containers.

But a small group of 13 hardy souls refuses to leave. Mostly farmers, they want to stay close to their cattle, sheep and horses – their livelihood, without which they would truly have nothing left to come back for.

“Practically we’ve returned to the stone age,” said Augusto Coccia, 65.

He was among the farmers housed in containers in the town square, eating breakfast, when the earthquake struck. It bounced the containers about and filled the air with a thick fog of dust.

The 6.6-magnitude tremor, the country’s most powerful in 36 years, pulled down build-

ings and historic churches in villages across the Appenine mountains. In Castelluccio, the ground is now as much as 2 feet lower, according to the national geophysics institute.

This town’s plight was worsened by the fact that the roads were cut off. Rescue helicopters brought in the bare necessities – food and water – on Sunday but little else.

Coccia and the others who stayed behind cook under the open sky with gas canisters.

They have no heating, electricity or constant water supply. The temperature drops to as low as minus-20 degrees at night.

“The medical supplies were delivered to us today. It’s been three days since we requested them, but it’s very hard to get them to us,” he said.

Besides helicopter, the only way to get to Castelluccio is by four-by-four through an hour and a half of rough terrain. Some residents of the area made the trip, as did forest rangers, with whom The Associated Press traveled.

Among those making their way to Castelluccio on Tuesday was Vincenzo Brandimarte, 63.

He had recently built an inn here using modern earthquake-resistant planning – and it was one of the very few buildings that did not collapse or crack.

“Today I began to cry when I saw the town with my own eyes,” he said. “This is worse than war. If it had been a real war maybe the town wouldn’t have been destroyed to this extent.”

ecarifio@shawmedia.com GENOA – Terry Burke watched as Genoa-Kingston senior Zach Miller took the kickoff from the left sideline of the field during an Oct. 14 game.

“This isn’t going to be good,” he thought as Miller ran into a scrum of players in the middle of the field.

After all, if Miller returned the second-half kickoff against Richmond-Burton for a touchdown, Burke would win $10,000 as part of Resource Bank’s Kick-Off for Kash contest.

But somehow, Miller broke free, charged out at full speed, beat the kicker and scored. Once he passed the kicker, Burke and the entire press box erupted in a raucous celebration.

It was a busy month for Burke, who has lived in Genoa for more than a decade and has four grown children. He and his wife, Wendy, were married Oct. 1.

Burke said he hasn’t decided how to spend the money yet.

“You know, my wife and I are just going to pray about it,” he said.

“We’ll have the Lord lead us in the direction he wants us to go with the money. We have no final commitments. We’re Christians, and we’ll leave it in the hands of the Lord.”

Genoa-Kingston coach Bill McCarty had a suggestion.

“Maybe they’ll be nice enough to donate some to the football program,” McCarty said with a chuckle.

“That’d be nice.”

Resource Bank has been holding the contest at DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa-Kingston football games since 2007, with three winners in that time – someone won in Genoa in 2008, then Sycamore had a winner in 2010. The contest started with a 2006 Northern Illinois University game, when it was called Kickoff Frenzy and had a $100,000 prize.

The success of that contest led to the launch of a modified version at local high schools the next year.

Burke said he’s a regular at Genoa-Kingston football games. He’s won before – he said a 50-50 raffle when his son, Steven, was still in high school. He won $22.

over Marmion Academy in the first round.

Genoa-Kingston hasn’t lost a game this year as it heads into its game Friday against Rockford Lutheran, a team the Cogs beat, 32-30 at Rockford in Week 1.

Although it won somebody a huge sum of money, Miller said he doesn’t really pay attention to the kickoff contest.

“Every time you get it, you’re just trying to make a play,” he said.

This time, Miller tried to make a

play by taking it straight to the middle of the field. He sped through the Rockets’ defense, avoided the kicker, and scored.

“At first, it didn’t seem like it wasn’t going to last very long,” Burke said. “It looked like he was going straight into the pile. ... Then he broke right and turned it into a foot race, and that’s when we got really excited and jumped up and down.

“I’ve got video of it on my phone.

It’s awesome to show it to friends and family.”

Protesters seek dialogue after controversial pumpkin display

browland@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A group of protesters who objected to a child’s award-winning display at the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival over the weekend hope volunteer festival organizers can learn something from the controversy.

The satirical entry into the Sycamore Lions Club Pumpkin Decorating Contest’s “TV, Nursery Rhyme, News or Current Events” category angered some with its portrayal of mustachioed, sombrero-wearing “illegal gourds.”

The display featured a pumpkin Donald Trump in front of a brick wall.

The wall had a sign that said “Made in China.” Trump was depicted as saying “I will build a great wall ... to keep out the illegal Gourds.” Six gourds were in front of the wall and on top of it, and a piñata was perched on the wall next to one of them.

A group of amateur judges awarded the entry third place in its category for the 12- to 17-year-old age group, which further upset protesters. A handful of people with signs protested during the festival. One sign read “Don’t reward hate.”

Jocelyn Santana, of DeKalb, said many people were bothered by the stereotypical portrayal of Hispanic immigrants, regardless of the intent of the boy who made it.

“The depiction of the culture was offensive,” Santana said. “It impacts the growing Latino population in Sycamore and DeKalb.”

Even worse, she said, was that the display received an award.

“The stereotypical message was validated by the award,” Santana said.

“That was the larger issue. That’s what we were protesting.”

The display was eventually removed sometime Saturday after talks that included Sycamore Police Chief Glenn Theriault, the protesters, the boy and his family, said Sycamore Lion Ed Kuhn, who helps oversee the pumpkin decorating contest that’s a central part of the five-day festival.

Kuhn said Theriault approached the Lions about the possibility of the family removing the display. The Sycamore Lions Club typically doesn’t allow for removal of a display until after the fes-

tival, but decided not to object if the boy and his family wanted to take it down themselves. And that’s apparently what happened. Kuhn said the pumpkin was gone by Sunday morning, although a pile of bricks used in the display remained.

While the Lions Club “reserves the right to remove the any display or sign that is deemed inappropriate for a family-oriented event,” Kuhn said display wasn’t out of bounds, especially for the “News or Current Events” category.

“It’s been on TV for months,” Kuhn said. “I thought the entry was creative.”

Further, he said the display met all the criteria to win an award.

“This is a current event. It was done with a sense of humor. We have amateur artists who judge the contest. This was clearly a creative entry. It met all of those criteria.”

He noted that last year there was a Confederate flag pumpkin on display that also generated some controversy.

Santana said that regardless of the creator’s intentions, the impact of the display was offensive to her and others.

Santana said her four children immediately recognized the stereotyping and were upset. She said other children who visited the festival also saw it.

Some people who stopped to talk to her and other protesters understood their objections, but not all of them. She said that if the gourds had blank faces, rather than decorated with sombreros, mustaches and piñatas, the display would have been fine.

Santana praised the Sycamore police for how they handled the protest, which at its height consisted of several people standing near the display holding signs.

Some visitors joined in.

She described the protest as an organic movement of like-minded people.

She said they had a private discussion with the father of the boy who made the display.

“We did have a conversation with the family,” she said. “It was a really great conversation.”

Protesters never asked to have the display taken down, Santana said.

She said she hopes similar conversations occur within the the community to raise awareness and find out what lessons can be learned from this. She said she hoped to see changes in the future.

SHIRLEY JUNE McKINLEY

Born: February 8, 1937 Died: October 30, 2016 Shirley (Taylor) McKinley of DeKalb, Illinois died October 30, 2016 at Lincolnshire Place, a memory care residence in Sycamore, Illinois.

She was born in Wayne County, Illinois on February 8, 1937, daughter to Otis and Nina (Pike) Taylor. Shirl completed high school at Wayne City High School, and soon moved to Rochelle Illinois, where she married her first husband, Allen Dean Braddy, and had their four children. Shirl was an extremely hard worker, starting her career as a legal secretary in DeKalb, Illinois while working two or more additional jobs at a time to support her family. She later became Secretary to the President at Northern Illinois University and retired from NIU in the early ‘90s. After retiring, Shirl completed beauty school in order to open her own salon, Shirl & Company, which she owned and operated for a number of years. While married to her second husband, Carl McKinley of DeKalb, Illinois, Shirl was an avid golfer, generous bingo winner, horse lover, and world traveler. Some of her favorite destinations included Costa Rica, England, Scotland, Hawaii, Alaska and Ireland. Shirl’s greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren, who affectionately called her Nana.

She is survived by her brother, Richard (Dorothy) Taylor of Salem, IL; children, Charlotte Braddy of Waukegan, IL, Thomas (Meggon) McKinley of Plano, TX, Jeffrey (Maria) McKinley of Gurnee, IL; grandchildren, Christine Meier of Chicago, IL, Alex Plucker of Creston, IL, Carly Plucker of Chicago, IL, Andrew McKinley of Chicago, IL, Allyse McKinley of Aurora, IL, Laurent McKinley of Dallas, TX, Savannah McKinley of Dallas TX. She is preceded in death by her parents, Otis and Nina (Pike) Taylor; sisters, Brenda Taylor, Lois (Taylor) Miller, Marilyn (Taylor) Byars; and son, Allen Dean Braddy, Jr. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday November 4, 2016 at 12:00 PM in St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb, IL with Father Dean Russell officiating.

Cremation will follow mass at Finch Crematory and burial of cremated remains will be in Fairview Park Cemetery on Saturday November 5, 2016.

Visitation will be held on Friday November 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM till the time of the service in the church.

Born: March 9, 1938; in Mosheim, TN Died: October 31, 2016; in DeKalb, IL Wanda Irene Reid, 78, of Rochelle, Illinois, died Monday, October 31, 2016, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center in DeKalb.

Born March 9, 1938, in Mosheim, Tennessee, the daughter of Payne and Beulah (Elenburg) Honeycutt, Irene married Edwin Reid on August 16, 1958 in DeKalb, Illinois. Edwin and Irene lived and farmed in the Cortland, Hinckley, Shabbona and Malta areas.

Irene had many jobs during her lifetime including waitressing at Big Rock Truck Stop and working for Bell Telephone. She sold Beeline clothing and also helped on the farm while raising her four children.

Irene enjoyed baking and decorating wedding and graduation cakes and also did many oil paintings.

She is survived by her four children, Debora (Michael Hajduk) Reid of Hoffman Estates, Gene Reid of Malta, Carol Reid of Rochelle, Joann (Michael Todd) Reid of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandson, Brandon Reid of DeKalb; three sisters, Sidney Edgar of Batavia, Mary Jensen of Hinckley, and Frances (John) Vermillion of Centerville, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents; and eight brothers; and two sisters.

Irene’s family would like to thank the staff at Bethany Healthcare Center, DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center, and DeKalb County Hospice for the wonderful care they gave their mother during her stays at their facilities. The Memorial Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, at Anderson Funeral Home in DeKalb with a private family interment of cremated remains at Fairview Park Cemetery in DeKalb.

DeKALB – A closet fire started by smoking materials in a unit at Huskie Ridge Apartments on Tuesday afternoon was extinguished before it could cause damage or injuries, DeKalb Duty Fire Chief Jim Zarek said.

Zarek said the DeKalb Fire Department responded at 1:35 p.m. Tuesday to a fire inside the building at 915 W. Hillcrest Drive, and arrived to find light smoke coming from the an apartment on the building’s second floor.

“Crews were able to extinguish it with an extinguisher,” he said. “There were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters.”

He said an investigation by the fire department and DeKalb police determined that the fire started when smoking materials, such as cigarettes, were left to smolder without being properly extinguished.

Zarek said fire damage was contained to clothes and items that were in the closet.

eolson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Authorities suspect the driver of a Chevrolet Impala was incapacitated Tuesday when his vehicle went off Bethany Road and was ripped in half after it hit a tree.

The preliminary police investigation found that the man driving might have been suffering with a medical condition at the time of the crash, DeKalb Deputy Police Chief John Petragallo said.

DeKalb police and firefighters were called around 11:40 a.m. to Bethany Road between Tygert Lane and Sangamon Road, near the Rivermist subdivision, after the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve, hit a road sign and then careened into tree with a trunk about a foot in diameter, Petragallo said.

Petragallo said the Impala was headed west on Bethany when it left the road.

Witnesses told police it was traveling fast and luckily missed oncoming traffic.

The driver was a man, but his identity was not immediately available Tuesday. Firefighter/paramedics from the DeKalb Fire Department took him to Kishwaukee Hospital, and he was later airlifted to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

Comptroller race in spotlight with budget fight

CHICAGO – The race for comptroller, usually a low-profile contest coinciding with Illinois’ gubernatorial campaigns, is in the spotlight during a presidential year with a big money special election offering Democrats an unusual chance to oust Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s hand-picked candidate.

The office that controls Illinois’ checkbook is open mid-term because incumbent Leslie Munger’s appointment is expiring. Rauner named her after Republican Judy Baar Topinka died after her 2014 re-election and Democrats in charge pushed a law requiring a 2016 special election.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Supreme Court on Monday barred a Chicago-area judicial candidate accused of posing as a judge during traffic court from taking the bench if she wins and revoked her law license.

Rhonda Crawford, 45, was a shoo-in to win in November until news that she briefly played a judge drew ridicule and condemnation among those who practice law in Cook County. Her only opponent, Judge Maryam Ahmad, is a write-in candidate.

Ex-Mich. woman convicted in 1979 death of husband

ROLLING MEADOWS – A former Michigan woman has been convicted of murder in the 1979 death of her husband in suburban Chicago. The Daily Herald reported that jurors returned the verdict Monday against 69-year-old Jacquelyn Greco in the death of Carl Gaimari.

Prosecutors said greed motivated Greco and another man to arrange a home invasion and robbery April 30, 1979. It began when two masked gunman entered the home in Inverness, tied Greco up and locked her and three of her children in a closet.

Gaimari was fatally shot after returning home from work. Greco’s defense argued

Public hearing planned for Chicago train expansion

CHICAGO – Chicago residents will get a chance to weigh in on plans to move ahead with the first city train expansion in more than 20 years.

The Chicago Transit Authority recently announced it’s moving forward with a $2.3 billion expansion of the Red Line. The train line runs north and south in the city with stops downtown and near ballparks for the Cubs and White Sox. The city plans to extend the line farther south. Construction could begin in 2022.

A public hearing was planned Tuesday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

Munger claimed her opponent voted “in lockstep” with Madigan and her campaign donations come from special interests. She defended her own campaign fund as support from people who want to improve Illinois.

“The governor has not bought me,” she said on Chicago’s WTTW. But Mendoza said the contributions make Munger a “wholly-owned subsidiary” of Rauner. She defended her budget votes as preserving funding for people in need.

“I feel like I’m running against Gov. Rauner right now,” Mendoza said afterward. “The minute he bought the office, it became a proxy between him and myself.”

University of Illinois to push for full state funding

URBANA – The University of Illinois is planning to try again for full state funding in fiscal 2018, which it hasn’t seen since 2015.

The university is also focusing on its efforts for a multiyear budget arrangement with Illinois, The News-Gazette reported.

It plans to announce proposed legislation next week that would provide five years of guaranteed funding in exchange of hitting certain educational benchmarks.

Those benchmarks include limiting tuition increases to the rate of inflation, providing adequate financial aid or achieving certain graduation rates. In return, the university would receive guaranteed funding for five years, regulatory relief and procurement reform, which faculty members have requested to accelerate the process of buying research equipment and other materials.

HELENA, Ala. – A deadly explosion that sparked a geyser of fire shut down a vital pipeline supplying gasoline to millions of people across the Southeast, raising fears of another round of gas shortages and price increases after the pipeline’s second accident and shutdown in two months.

Continuing fires in the drought-stricken area of central Alabama hampered officials’ efforts to fully assess the damage Tuesday afternoon, and firefighters built an earthen berm to contain the burning fuel.

The accident happened when a dirt-moving track hoe struck the pipeline, ignited gasoline and sparked a blast Monday, killing one worker and injuring five others, Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline said.

2 bus drivers among 6 killed in Baltimore crash

BALTIMORE – A school bus was blocks away from its first stop Tuesday morning when it hit a cemetery wall, rear-ended a car and then ricocheted off a roadside pillar into an oncoming commuter bus. The pre-dawn crash killed six people and injured 10, authorities said.

There were virtually no skid marks at the crash scene, suggesting no braking by the 67-year-old school bus driver,

who was killed, and leading to what Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith called a working theory that he had suffered some sort of medical emergency.

The 33-year-old female driver of the Maryland Transit Administration bus also died at the scene, along with four of her 12 passengers, Smith said.

All eight of the surviving commuter bus riders were hurt, two of them critically, he said.

Prosecution, defense cite video in traffic stop killing CINCINNATI – The lead prosecutor and defense attorney Tuesday offered sharply conflicting views of what a police body camera video will tell jurors about what happened when a white officer fatally shot a black man during a 2015 traffic stop.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the video shows Ray Tensing was lying when he said he was in danger of being dragged to death and that the now-fired University of Cincinnati officer acted contrary to police standards and the law when he shot an unarmed Sam DuBose.

Attorney Stewart Mathews said the prosecution interpretation was so different, it was as if they watched different videos. Tensing was facing death or serious injury from “a 3,000-pound car that he [DuBose] turned into a weapon,” Mathews told jurors.

DADE CITY, Fla. – Donald Trump could draw the United States into nuclear war, Hillary Clinton warns. Clinton would plunge the country into a constitutional crisis, he says.

As the caustic presidential race lurches toward the finish line, each candidate is aggressively casting the other as a catastrophic choice for the White House. Making an affirmative case about their own qualifications and vision has become a secondary priority.

It’s an ugly conclusion to a contest featuring two of the most unpopular presidential candidates in modern American politics. The sexual assault accusations that have trailed Trump in the race’s closing weeks and a new FBI review into Clinton’s email habits seem likely to only reinforce the public’s negative perceptions, leaving the candidates to essentially argue to voters that they’re the best of two unappealing options.

“I would rather be here talking about nearly anything else,” Clinton said Tuesday during a rally in Florida where she leveled a series of attacks on Trump’s character and preparedness for the White House. “But I can’t just talk about all of the good things we want to do.”

Indeed, Clinton’s speeches in this final full week of campaigning have overwhelmingly focused on Trump. On Monday, she warned against giving Trump the authority to order a nuclear attack, bringing along a former nuclear launch officer to bolster her point.

“Imagine his advisers afraid to tell him what he doesn’t want to hear, racing against his legendarily short attention span to lay out life-and-

death choices too complex to be reduced to a single tweet,” Clinton said Monday in Ohio. “Then imagine him plunging us into a war because somebody got under his very thin skin.”

After spending much of the summer and fall tearing Trump down, Clinton had planned to close the campaign on a more positive note. She talked about giving Americans something to vote for, not just against. And with public opinion polls showing her with solid leads in most battleground states, she started talking about healing divisions and unifying the country after the election.

But her advisers say they saw polls tighten even before the FBI launched its new email review. The campaign now believes she needs to make a last push to define Trump as an unacceptable choice in order to seal the deal with persuadable voters.

On Tuesday, Clinton focused on Trump’s demeaning and predatory comments about women, calling him a “bully.” This time she brought with her former Miss Universe Alicia Machado.

Trump criticized Machado for gaining weight after winning the 1996 contest.

Trump’s campaign rhetoric has always been dark, full of searing depictions of a crumbling nation, and he has not been shy about going negative on Clinton. He routinely calls her “Crooked Hillary” and “the most corrupt person ever to run for the White House.”

But Trump, too, has stepped up his broadsides after the last weeks of October handed him a pair of potentially potent political gifts: the projected “Obamacare” premium rate hike and FBI Director James Comey’s letter revealing that agents are reviewing emails that may be connected to Clinton’s private server.

FBI director criticized amid email maelstrom

WASHINGTON – FBI Director James Comey once called it a crucial leadership test: Anticipating whether a decision makes sense “through the eyes of others.”

Now his own big decision has Democrats and even some Republicans wondering whether he failed his own test.

The FBI director who prides himself on moral rectitude and a squeakyclean reputation is being criticized from all sides for lobbing a stink bomb into the center of the presidential race.

His disclosure that investigators have found more emails that may – or may not – relate to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email setup as secretary of state has jolted the race and generated far more questions than answers.

This isn’t the first time Comey has found himself in the spotlight for taking a stand on what the 6-foot-8 lawyer saw as the moral high ground.

Perhaps the last previous thing many Americans heard about Comey was the tale of his dramatic rush to the bedside of then-Attorney General John Ashcroft in a darkened hospital room in 2004 for a standoff with senior White

House officials over federal wiretapping rules. Comey, serving as acting attorney general during Ashcroft’s illness, dashed to the bedside to block Bush administration officials from making an end run to get Ashcroft’s permission to reauthorize a secret no-warrant wiretapping program.

“That night was probably the most difficult night of my professional life,” Comey testified before Congress in 2007.

Perhaps until now.

Former Justice Department officials and lawmakers from both James parties are calling Com- Comey ey’s revelation about Clinton’s emails just 11 days before the election an improper, astonishing and perplexing intrusion into politics in the critical endgame of the 2016 campaign.

It’s an unexpected predicament for the man who has painted ethical decision-making as an easy call.

“There’s right, and there’s wrong, and it ain’t hard to tell the difference,” he once said.

That internal certitude has led the FBI official to freelance his positions at times.

Last year he broke from the White House in suggesting a possible link between police officers’ anxieties about taking actions that could be recorded on viral videos and rising homicide rates in some American cities.

The White House distanced itself from those remarks, saying there was no scientific evidence to support a connection, or show that officers were pulling back from their responsibilities.

Comey, a former Republican who is no longer registered with a political party, spent 15 years as a federal prosecutor before serving in the George W. Bush administration. His office brought the case that led to Martha Stewart’s conviction on obstruction of justice and lying to government investigators. As an assistant U.S. attorney in Virginia, he handled the investigation of the 1996 bombing of the Khobar Towers housing complex in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 members of the U.S. military.

President Barack Obama, when he nominated Comey for a 10-year-appointment to the FBI job in 2013, cited his willingness to stand up to power “at key moments when it’s mattered most,” referencing the hospital-room standoff.

Aides say Obama’s high opinion of Comey still stands. But the White House is leaving the FBI director dangling, saying it is up to him to defend himself in the face of what spokesman Josh Earnest called “significant criticism from a variety of legal experts, including individuals who served in senior Department of Justice positions in administrations that were led by presidents in both parties.”

Indeed, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a hard-line conservative and House Judiciary Committee member, told Fox News Radio that “this was probably not the right thing for Comey to do, the protocol here, to come out this close to an election. But this whole case has been mishandled, and now it is what it is.”

And former Rep. Joe Walsh, a supporter of Donald Trump, tweeted that Comey’s action amounted to an “unconstitutional abuse of government power against our electoral process.

Just not right.”

Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada went a step further and accused Comey of deliberately inserting himself into the race to damage Clinton’s presidential prospects, suggesting the FBI director may have broken the law.

Voters, you’re our only hope Illinois’ budget crisis has been going on for years.

A four-year temporary income tax increase (2011 to ’14), approved by then-Gov. Pat Quinn and fellow Democrats in the Legislature, did surprisingly little to alleviate it.

The 2014 election of Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner led to his tussle with the Democratic-controlled Legislature, dominated by House Speaker Michael Madigan, that sparked a yearlong budget impasse that brought about the half-year stopgap budget agreed to in June.

And yet, living in a state hit hard by billions of dollars in deficits, debt and unfunded pension obligations, most Illinoisans said the state’s budget stalemate hasn’t affected them.

The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, based at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, recently conducted a poll of 1,000 registered Illinois voters.

It found 62 percent said the budget mess hadn’t affected them one bit, while 34 percent said they personally had been affected.

Of those feeling budgetary pain, 18 percent said it had cost them their jobs (or they feared it soon would); 15 percent said the loss of general social services had affected them; and 14 percent said the loss of K-12 education funding had affected them.

Sadly, after next week’s election is over, 100 percent of those who pay income taxes in Illinois are likely to be affected.

That’s because Madigan and his fellow Democrats are likely to push through another tax increase. Of course, lawmakers aren’t courageous enough to approve a tax hike before the election.

And you can bet this tax increase won’t be temporary, as was the one passed in 2011.

Similar to the one in 2011, however, you can also bet this tax increase won’t solve the state’s fiscal problems. That’s because state government has a spending problem, and it refuses to do anything about it.

Illinois led all 50 states in population loss in 2015. Every other state in the Midwest showed a net population increase. What will another tax increase do to Illinois’ outmigration problem?

It will make it only worse as more and more residents search for work elsewhere.

Taxes should be on every Illinois resident’s mind when voting next week. Electing responsible leaders who understand state government has a spending problem is our only hope.

‘Safe Roads’ amendment would hurt in long term

To the Editor: On Nov. 8, the first thing on our ballots (even above the presidential race) will be a proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitution.

This amendment provides that money the state government raises from transportation-related sources – such as vehicle registration, tolls and taxes – must be used for transportation-related purposes, such as road repairs.

At first glance, this looks like a good idea. But on closer examination, it is a very bad idea.

Should transportation revenue be used for transportation purposes? Definitely. Should this use be guaranteed by the state constitution? Absolutely not! Illinois is still dealing with the last budget item enshrined in the constitution – pensions for state workers.

Constitutionally guaranteeing pensions did not prevent the Legislature from using pension funds for other purposes, but it is making it very difficult to solve our budget issues now.

Putting transportation money in a similar “lock box” (as supporters of the amendment call it) would ensure that no matter the state of Illinois’ finances, transportation money could never be used for social services, education or even emergency disaster relief.

Funding transportation needs would always be our No. 1 priority, regardless of what other needs our state might have.

Think about it: The legislators that allowed this proposed amendment to be placed on the ballot (while other amendments were denied) are the same people who are diverting the transportation revenue for other purposes.

Are they admitting they can’t be trusted to properly use taxpayers’ money? Or are they just ensuring that their supporters in road-building unions get their money first?

Putting specific budget constraints into the constitution hobbles present and future lawmakers’ abilities to make a budget that is best for all of Illinois’ needs. (If legislators can’t handle that responsibility, we should replace them, not amend the constitution.)

Vote “no” on the constitutional amendment.

Wett will confront county’s problems

To the Editor: I am writing this letter to enthusiastically endorse the candidacy of John Wett for the DeKalb County Board.

We need good people at the local level who are committed to public service, and John meets that lofty standard.

He’s a therapist, and he has a plan to save taxpayers money and reduce recidivism at our jail by increasing mental health services.

He wants to continue to ensure the prosperity of local farms by opposing the Great Lakes Basin Railroad in the way that it is proposed. He would rather run it along the Interstate 90 corridor.

He also wants to protect veterans, senior citizens and the disabled community.

I have no doubt that he will apply himself diligently to the problems confronting this county. Please give strong consideration to supporting John Wett for County Board District 2. Because if you want good politics, you’ve got to get Wett.

Keep politics out of Pumpkin Festival Parade

To the Editor: Although I enjoyed watching this year’s Pumpkin Festival Parade, I strongly object to the inclusion of political floats.

This is supposed to be a fun, pumpkin-themed parade, and not a political demonstration.

I saw three Trump floats, one for a Democratic candidate for a local office, and one horrible, attack-ad float. None of these have any place in this festival.

In the future, the organizers should exclude all political parties from using this festival as a way of airing their views and publicizing their candidates.

For GOP, defeat is not enough I don’t want the Republican Party defeated next week.

This is written, just so you know, after an email exchange with a reader who suggested a recent column had been penned in consultation with the White House to soften the ground for a new presidential directive. It is written in the wake of a conservative talk show host telling his audience that the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape that damaged Donald Trump’s candidacy was a setup by CIA agent Billy Bush. It is written as the internet is in a state of mass arousal over a rumor that candidate Obama “flaunted his erection” to women reporters on his campaign plane in 2008.

It is written, in other words, on an average day in the pest-ridden, plague-infected swamp of rumor, rancor, conspiracy and flat-out bollocks that now counts as Republican political discourse. More to the point, it is written out of concern over what and how the country will be after next week’s election.

So yeah, I don’t want the GOP defeated.

I want it immolated.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts I want it razed to the foundation, reduced to a moonscape, left unlivable even for cockroaches, much less newts. I want it treated like boot heels treat ants and furnaces treat ice cubes, treated like a middle-school basketball team playing the 1971-72 Lakers.

Defeat is not enough. Let there be humiliation. Let there be pain.

This lavish disgust has nothing, absolutely zilch, to do with conservative ideology. It is not in opposition to Republican positions on taxes, regulation, LGBTQ rights, immigration or foreign policy. But it has everything to do with the party’s willing and expedient embrace of crazy.

Granted, Republicans did not invent paranoia, persecution complexes or reality estrangement. I remember as a child hearing the barbershop regulars spin elaborate theories of how the

moon landing was a hoax and Neil Armstrong’s “one small step for a man” actually took place in a New Mexico desert.

It seemed pretty harmless at the time.

The GOP’s innovation was to harness and nurture that craziness for votes. It flattered and wooed the guy in the barbershop – and the woman in the beauty parlor – by taking them seriously. Through its media partners – Fox “News” and talk radio kingpins from Limbaugh on down – and with the timely arrival of the internet and social media, it gave them support and a megaphone.

In return, it reaped the nigh-nuclear energy of kooks, cranks, outcasts and iconoclasts whose take-no-prisoners anger invigorated a Grand Old Party. But they also pushed that party further and further to the right – past Nixon, past Reagan and the Bushes, past political and intellectual coherence.

Past decorum.

Until finally, the party sold its soul to “The Donald.”

The damage to GOP credibility

is profound. The damage to America is worse. We find ourselves a nation that cannot have meaningful discussion of its issues because some of us have pulled away from the center, from common cause and shared mission, choosing instead to dwell in a pestilential swamp where newspaper hacks collude with presidents and Billy Bush is Jason Bourne.

So the crazy must be rebuked emphatically, refuted in a way that leaves no doubt: We are better than this. That’s what’s best for the nation. It’s also what’s best for principled conservatives powerless against a virulent cancer that has metastasized through their party.

Maybe they’ll be able to save that party – or build a new one. Either way, the mission statement here for thoughtful Americans could not be more clear. Do not defeat the GOP. Nuke it.

Trump, Putin share a frightening worldview One of Vladimir Putin’s fondest conceits is that the U.S. political system is every bit as corrupt, authoritarian and bent on external aggression as his regime. At a meeting with Western academics and ex-statesmen last week in his favorite resort, Sochi, Putin was at it again: For every crime committed by his Kremlin, Putin was ready with a comparison to a supposedly identical outrage by the American “ruling class,” as he likes to call it.

The invasions of Crimea and eastern Ukraine? Exactly like NATO’s interventions in Bosnia and Kosovo during the 1990s, says Putin. The Obama administration’s charge that Russia has attempted to intervene in the U.S. presidential campaign? Putin responded with the same language used by the White House to answer Moscow’s allegations that Hillary Clinton was behind popular demonstrations

against Putin’s re-election four years ago.

“The majority of citizens,” sighed Putin, “have no real influence on the political process and no direct and real influence on power.” As for the notion that he supported Donald Trump, Putin called this orchestrated propaganda of the Clinton camp before observing that Trump “represents the interests of the sizable part of American society that is tired of the elites that have been in power for decades now ... and does not like to see power handed down by inheritance.” Maybe that wasn’t an endorsement, but Putin and Trump have an uncanny way of echoing each other’s words.

The subject that most seemed to provoke Putin was Aleppo, where Russian and Syrian bombing of hospitals, apartment buildings and a United Nations relief convoy has been widely condemned as a war

crime. “We keep hearing Aleppo, Aleppo, Aleppo,” whined Putin. Yet the attack on the Syrian city, he contended, was not different from the U.S.-backed assault on Mosul, the Iraqi city held by the Islamic State. “If it is better not to go in” to Aleppo, he contended, “then the offensive against Mosul shouldn’t go ahead, either.”

Here, for the record, are some differences: While Mosul is controlled by Islamist extremists who enslave non-Sunni women and behead dissenters, the rebel forces in Aleppo include Western-backed secular groups who seek only to overturn the blood-drenched Assad regime. U.S. and allied planes are not deliberately targeting Mosul’s hospitals or international aid groups. And while the Mosul campaign has broad international support, only Russia, the Assad regime and Iran support the Aleppo

attack.

Most people living in open societies are informed enough to perceive the cynicism and mendacity in Putin’s comparisons. But Russia’s increasingly sophisticated internet and satellite television propaganda operations are winning over a segment of Western opinion. Trump, too, has adopted Mr. Putin’s view. He has repeatedly endorsed Moscow’s call for the West to join Russia in fighting “terrorism,” and he has written off Aleppo as “basically fallen.”

If Trump is elected, the United States will have a president who sees no essential difference between the U.S. and Russian military offensives in the Middle East. Putin will be vindicated: The moral gap between his regime and the White House will be difficult to detect.

akantecki@shawmedia.com HUNTLEY – DeKalb volleyball coach Jamie DiMaggio encouraged her team to “play loose and have fun” in Tuesday’s Class 4A Huntley Sectional semifinal against Huntley.

After losing the first set against the Red Raiders and trailing by four points late in the second, the Barbs easily could have tightened up defensively and buckled under the immense pressure of playing in the postseason.

But they didn’t.

Led by juniors Hannah Oehlberg and Jasmine Kemp, the Barbs stayed calm and never appeared rattled against the sectional’s No. 1 seed.

DeKalb came all the way back to steal the second set and force a third before taking over in a 19-25, 25-21, 25-12 vic-

“My biggest thing coming into this [match] was being calm, being loose and making sure that they came out tonight and had fun,” DiMaggio said.

“Huntley is a great team. They run a fast offense, and I wanted the girls to

make sure they were playing for each other, staying calm and staying confident … and they did that.”

The Barbs trailed, 17-13, in the second set when Oehlberg spurred a season-saving comeback for DeKalb with five or her match-leading 21 kills. DeKalb used an 8-0 run in the second to overtake the Raiders (27-8) for good.

In the third, DeKalb jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and Huntley never recovered.

“We just weren’t letting any easy balls score on us, and just going for everything,” Oehlberg said. “We were just trying to play a good defensive game and serve-receive. I was just excited to get it over with (in the third set) and keep pushing.”

Huntley kept Oehlberg relatively quiet in the opening set, but she had big swing after big swing over the final two sets.

“They were setting her in the front row, the back row, everywhere,” Raiders coach Karen Naymola said. “We knew we had to shut her down, and she stepped up for them.”

In DeKalb’s regional championship win over Cary-Grove last week, Oehlberg finished with a match-high 26 kills.

“She’s been unbelievable, and it’s only going to get better, I think,” DiMaggio said of her junior outside hitter. “I can’t say anything else other than she’s doing it at practice and she’s getting better every day. She’s confident in her play, and she’s doing it for her teammates.”

Kemp, a middle blocker, added eight kills for DeKalb, senior setter Jacqueline Longeville passed out 25 assists and senior libero Abby Boyden led the defense with 21 digs.

Huntley was led by freshman setter Taylor Jakubowski with 22 assists and 11 kills, Ally Dion (Southeast Missouri State) had eight kills, Aleah Amelio had 15 digs and Sarah Zayas added 11 digs.

“We gave away too many points,” Dion said. “We knew they could put the balls away. They’re a strong team. We gave them too much confidence in that second game, where we should have just finished it.”

In a Class 3A Freeport Sectional semifinal against LaSalle-Peru, the Kaneland volleyball team looked to make it a three-match sweep against the Cavaliers.

They got their wish with a 25-21, 2523 sweep Tuesday.

Even with another sweep, Knights coach Cyndi Violett said she knows that such a match doesn’t come easy, even after watching plenty of film from the past two matches – coming in a Northern Illinois Big 12 crossover win and during a match at the Pontiac Invitational.

“It’s always tough to come and be ready to play a team the third time around,” Violett said. “(We) beat them

Kaneland faces NI Big 12 West Division champion Sterling and NIU recruit Kaylee Martin in Thursday’s sectional final. The Golden Warriors (31-5-1) won a crossover match against the Knights last year, and also advanced Tuesday with a three-set win over Rockford Boylan.

“We worked so hard for this all season,” Nauert said. “We’re finally seeing it in reality, and it’s amazing.”

Jablonski also led the Knights with 18 digs.

Former Yankees Chapman, Miller could decide series

The Associated Press CLEVELAND – The guy who has spent the past three months possibly redefining what it means to be a closer remains in awe of the guy who took his job this spring.

Sorry, Andrew Miller can’t help it.

Aroldis Chapman’s stuff is so electric, it’s impossible to turn away.

“I love watching him pitch,” Miller said. “I don’t change the channel when he’s on TV.” At the moment, his Aroldis view is even better. The Chapman Cleveland Indians reliever can just glance over at the Cubs’ bullpen during the World Series to get his fix of Chapman’s seemingly endless stream of triple-digit fastballs.

Andrew Miller “There’s a perception that it’s easy for him because he’s such an outlier,” Miller said.

“But he’s got a tremendous work ethic and in the way he goes about getting himself prepared.”

Miller would know. They were in the bullpen together for 2½ months with the New York Yankees this season. New York acquired Chapman in December, and the Cuban left-hander bumped Miller to a setup role when he returned from a domestic violence suspension in May. Miller had tied for second in the AL with 36 saves the year before.

The experiment lasted until the trade deadline. Treading water in late July, the Yankees sent Chapman to the Cubs and Miller to the Indians in exchange for prospects while committing to a full rebuild.

Three months later, the two players who began the season trying to help the Yankees win a 28th World Series title find themselves playing vital roles on teams that have combined for a small fraction of that number (four). Miller and the Indians had a chance to clinch the club’s first championship since 1948 on Tuesday night in Game 6, while Chapman and the Cubs were hoping for a chance to send it to a deciding Game 7 as the Cubs try to end a 108-year drought.

On the surface, Miller and Chapman could be carbon copies of each other: hard-throwing lefties who overwhelm batters with power. The reality is a bit more complex in large part because of the unorthodox way Cleveland manager Terry Francona deploys Miller.

In an era of clearly defined bullpen roles, Francona uses Miller as a 6-foot7 piece of duct tape. Sometimes, the seventh inning needs to be patched up.

Sometimes the eighth. Sometimes the sixth. Sometimes, all three. And Miller, a former first-round pick who spent the first half of his career trying to make it as a starter before the Boston Red Sox gave up and converted him into a reliever in 2012, has responded by putting together one of the most dominant postseason runs ever.

Nine times during the playoffs, Miller has jogged to the mound. The Indians

are undefeated in those nine games. It’s not a coincidence. He’s entered as early as the fifth and as late as the eighth, recording at least four outs in every appearance. His numbers heading into Tuesday’s game – 2-0 with a save and a 0.36 ERA, striking out 39 against just five walks – look like a typo or something out of a video game where “fatigue” has been turned off.

They’re not.

“Andrew’s the model of just pitch whenever,” Francona said. “The kid’s unbelievable.”

Even Miller is having a hard time describing the run he’s on, one fueled by a nearly unhittable slider that forces batters such as Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo to play the baseball version of the lottery every time they swing.

“You just hope you pick the right lane,” Rizzo said.

Almost nobody has. Opponents are hitting .140 against Miller, who doesn’t seem to tire, whether he’s throwing 17 pitches or 37. He attributes his elasticity to the gadgetry Cleveland’s training staff uses to keep him fresh and the survival instincts honed from the days when he was simply clinging to a spot on a major league roster.

“It’s not something you offer, it’s something you have to have,” he said.

“If you’re not flexible, you’re not going to have a spot in the big leagues.”

Besides, as Miller points out, “there’s very few closers who become closers right away and fall into that routine.”

Meaning closers such as Chapman, who took over the job in Cincinnati in 2012 and proceeded to make four straight All-Star teams. The 28-year-old is a meticulous creature of habit, so used to being used in the ninth inning – and almost exclusively the ninth inning – that Cubs manager Joe Maddon checked with Chapman before Game 5 about entering earlier.

The call ended up coming with one out in the seventh and the Cubs up a run.

Chapman responded by allowing only one hit over 22/3 innings to preserve a 3-2 victory and pick up his fourth save of the playoffs. The way Chapman went about his business, it was almost Miller-esque.

“That was impressive,” Francona said. “I mean, kind of like what Andrew’s done, he kind of did the same thing.”

Bears line coach says Long’s shoulder hasn’t been an issue

ajahns@suntimes.com Bears assistant coaches met the media Tuesday before breaking for the bye week, and they offered some insight into some of the team’s injured players.

Long’s shoulder: Offensive line coach Dave Magazu said evaluating right guard Kyle Long’s season hasn’t been difficult because his left-shoulder issue hasn’t been a problem.

“To be honest with you, we haven’t seen the shoulder issue,” Magazu said.

Long didn’t play against the Vikings because of strained triceps muscle.

Magazu said he injured it during the pregame warmups in Green Bay. He

was then removed in the second quarter against the Packers.

“You could see a little bit of him getting hurt because he couldn’t lock up with his arm,” Magazu said. “You could see that.”

But Magazu’s assessment of Long’s shoulder can be viewed as good news.

Long hasn’t worn a brace to better secure his shoulder in any game this season.

“The shoulder thing, I think he’s been fine and hasn’t complained about it and doesn’t feel limited, so I feel we’re kind of dodging it,” Magazu said.

White’s recovery: Receivers coach Curtis Johnson was asked for his educated guess as to whether Kevin White

will return this season. White underwent surgery three weeks ago to repair a spiral fracture in his left fibula and was placed on injured reserve.

“I think he will,” Johnson said. “I definitely think he will, just because of how that kid is and how determined he is.”

Johnson points to White’s attempt to jog off the field in the third quarter against the Lions on Oct. 2 after he was injured.

“Most guys are going to lay on the field and get carted off,” Johnson said.

“He thought he was getting back into the game.”

During a game-day interview on WBBM-780 AM on Oct. 16, general

manager Ryan Pace said the team was “eyeballing” Week 13 against the 49ers for White’s return. “[White] wants to play,” Johnson said. “He loves to play the game. He doesn’t want to let his teammates down. He’s texting and calling and being on them and being around.”

Fuller’s availability: Secondary coach Ed Donatell said cornerback Kyle Fuller is “absolutely” making progress physically after he was placed on IR on Sept. 27 after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in the preseason.

The Bears are allowed to activate only one player from IR, meaning there is a big decision ahead when picking between Fuller and White.

CHICAGO – The game should have been in hand.

With 5:41 to go Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings, the Bears had the ball with a 10-point lead, but finishing has been an issue.

This would have been the time for the Vikings’ front seven to play as advertised, as it has all season, stopping the Bears on three straight plays to get the ball back and try to score again.

Instead, Jordan Howard and the offensive line – without two Pro Bowlers – continued their strong effort, sealing the 20-10 upset victory.

“That’s a great defense, one of the top run defenses in the league right now,” center Cody Whitehair said. “Jordan did well, the line blocked well and everyone blocked well on the perimeter.”

The final drive began with an 11-yard run, then 11 yards on two carries for another first down, and suddenly 2:40 had been taken off the clock, and the game was in hand.

“That felt good,” said left guard Eric Kush, who played very well stepping in for Josh Sitton. “When you get into a four-minute [drill], you see a lot of teams struggle to get yards. The defense is coming because they need the ball

“You can see how much he’s grown,” Cutler said.

“He’s like a four- or five-year vet back there. He doesn’t get fazed. He’s got great vision, and that’s kind of come along in these last six or seven games. He seems kind of more comfortable back there and he’s one of those backs, as the game goes on, he gets stronger and stronger.

“That last drive, I sort of had to tell him not to break a tackle and to just go down so we could kick this thing and get out of here because he was running hard until the last whistle.”

Teammates spoke glowingly not just about Howard’s game, but Cutler’s leadership, too. That came out in the fourth quarter as he kept his teammates focused on hanging onto the victory.

“I just told them to keep doing what they were doing,” Cutler said. “We had played an unbelievable three and threefourths quarters. Let’s just go and finish this off and don’t do anything different. Just keep doing exactly what they were doing. I told them that all game and they executed. They were fired up throughout the game and extremely focused.

You could see it in their eyes that they wanted to win this one.”

Vikings coach Zimmer has ‘minor medical procedure’

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – Coach Mike Zimmer is recovering from what the Minnesota Vikings have called a “minor medical procedure” performed the morning after the team’s loss at Soldier Field.

Carter-Williams out for at least a month with injury BOSTON – The Bulls will be without newly acquired Michael Carter-Williams for the next four to six weeks, after the guard suffered a bone bruise in his left knee during Monday night’s win in Brooklyn.

Carter-Williams, who was acquired for Tony Snell in the preseason, crumbled in the second quarter, and the initial fear was it could have been his ACL. The fact that it was only a bone bruise was a relief.

According to coach Fred Hoiberg, they also could be without the services of Doug McDermott against the Celtics, who went into the concussion protocol late Monday.

“He was asymptomatic when he got to the hotel [Monday] night,” Hoiberg said. “That’s when the 24 hours starts. So as long as he’s asymptomatic and passes the necessary steps, he would be available to go. We just have to make sure he passes everything.”

McDermott is the fourth-leading scorer on the team, averaging 13.3 points, and has been the most consistent player off the bench so far.

That’s what the 3-0 start also has shown. Changes had to be made, and the likes of Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose had to go.

“Yeah, kind of sort of,” Butler said, when asked whether the old core of players was getting stale. “I think everybody had been playing with one another so long, maybe it was time for a new look for a lot of different guys.

Not in a bad way, but sometimes that’s the way it looked and felt out on the court. It’s a new team now. As much as we talk about last year’s team, I think we should start focusing on this year’s team a lot more.”

Although Butler said he wasn’t looking to take shots at last year’s roster, and even thanked them for making him the player he is now, that just wasn’t a group that a player could get close to.

This year’s makeup is.

“Everybody is over at (Dwyane) Wade’s house or my house, not only talking about the game, but just talking about life in general,” Butler said. “Because, you know, if you can care about someone’s life off the floor, then whenever they get on this floor, they’re definitely going to be bought in.’’

BOSTON – Missteps have been made.

Jimmy Butler once again admitted that Tuesday after a Bulls practice at Emerson College.

Not just with his words, either.

There was the two-time All-Star – and self-proclaimed best wide receiver not currently playing in the NFL – catching a football from coach Fred Hoiberg in the basement practice gym.

Yes, the same Fred Jimmy Butler Hoiberg who many outsiders assumed had difficulties coaching Butler last season.

“Maybe I judged somebody too quickly last year, but I know he’s here, he’s working, and that’s all you can ask,’’ Butler said of Hoiberg after a few well-thrown receptions.

A much different take than he had last season, when it was Butler who declared that Hoiberg needed to “coach harder.”

And the two didn’t need a game of catch with a football to get on that same page.

“When you work, everyone is going to go to war for you,” Butler said. “Oh yeah, he’s definitely changed for the better. I look at him a lot differently, as well. It seems like he knows his guys a lot better now, which is great. Look at him joke around with us if you were in the locker room after games or before games, throwing the football, it’s the littlest things that go the longest. Now we know that he’s in the fight with us, he’s one of us.”

Although Butler didn’t come out and apologize for at least making life a bit more difficult for his then-rookie coach last year, he also went on to say that like players can do in the offseason, coaches also can get better. The way he sees it, Hoiberg fits that description.

“Yeah, I think that everybody can always get better, whether you’re watching film, whether you’re getting to know your players and where they like the ball on the floor, drawing up plays to get guys going to their left or to their right, or to shoot the ball here, that’s all part of knowing the game, knowing your players, which is the coach’s job just as much as the players’ job, as well,” Butler said.

Master a better apple pie

Any number of tasks may strike you as easy as pie, but anyone who’s ever actually made a pie can tell you it actually requires some care if you want it to turn out well.

Consider apple pie. Its ingredients are few and elemental: apples, of course, along with sugar, flavoring and pie crust. But choosing the right apples is a serious business. Likewise, you’ll want to do what you can to prevent the apples from shrinking in the pie shell as they cook, which simultaneously makes the bottom crust soggy and creates an unsightly gap between the filling and top crust.

Let’s start with the apples. Some are tart and some are sweet. Happily, autumn is apple season, which means farmers markets (and, to a lesser extent, supermarkets) should be bursting with choices. Buy an assortment, taste each kind and take notes about their flavor, paying particular attention to their sugar level. An apple’s flavor intensifies as it is cooked. Unless you’re nuts about one particular variety, I’d advise you to pick a mix for your pie. The complexity of the flavors will make the pie that much more interesting.

Some apples turn into mush when they’re cooked, while others hold their shape for days. Most varieties will hold their shape, but McIntosh, Macoun, Cortland and Empire will fall apart and turn into applesauce. I recommend adding a few of the fall-apart varieties to your pie. Their sauciness will moisten and bind the rest of the apples in the filling.

Now, how to prevent that gap? Simple. Gently pre-cook the apples, which drains them of liquid and shrinks their bulk. They’ll shrink no more once they’re added to the pie, which means there’ll be no gap between the filling and the top crust. But don’t toss out that liquid! If you boil it down as detailed below and add it back to the apples, you’ll amp up the apple essence.

Deep-Dish Apple Pie Start to finish: 3 hours Servings: 8

4 pounds firm apples, (a mix of sweet and tart) peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inchthick wedges 1 pound applesauce apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/4-inch-thick wedges 1/2 cup plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar, divided

1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon table salt 1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest Double batch of pie dough, refrigerated 1 tablespoon heavy cream In a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat, toss together all of the apples, 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar, the brown sugar, salt, 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice and lemon zest.

Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook until the firm apples are just tender when poked with a knife, about 15 minutes.

Transfer the apples to a large colander set over a bowl and let them drain for 15 minutes, shaking the colander every so often.

After the apples have drained, add the juices from the bowl to the Dutch oven and simmer until reduced to about 1/2 cup.

In the bowl, combine the reduced juices with the apples. Taste for seasoning and add additional lemon juice if necessary. Cool to room temperature.

Meanwhile, remove 1 disk of dough from the refrigerator and roll it out between 2 large sheets of plastic wrap into a 12-inch circle, about 1/8 inch thick. If the dough becomes soft and/or sticky, return it to the refrigerator and chill until firm. Remove the plastic wrap from one side of the dough and flip it onto a 9-inch pie plate. Remove the second layer of wrap.

Ease the dough down into the plate and press it into the bottom and sides gently without stretching it. Leave the dough that overhangs the plate in place; chill until the dough is firm, about 30 minutes.

Roll the second disk of dough between 2 large sheets of plastic wrap into a 12-inch circle, about 1/8 inch thick. Chill, leaving the dough between the plastic sheets, until firm, about 30 minutes.

While the dough chills, adjust the oven rack to the lowest position, place an empty rimmed baking sheet on the rack, and heat the oven to 425 degrees F. Remove the pie plate lined with the dough from the refrigerator and spoon the apple mixture into it. Remove the plastic from one side of the remaining dough and flip the dough onto the apples. Remove the second piece of plastic. Trim the excess dough hanging off the edge of the pie plate so it is flush with the edge. Pinch the top and bottom dough rounds firmly together and press them with the tines of a fork.

Cut four 2-inch slits in the top of the dough.

Chill the filled pie for 10 minutes. Brush the surface with the heavy cream, then sprinkle evenly with remaining 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar. Bake the pie on the heated baking sheet until the crust is dark golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes. Transfer the pie to a wire rack and let cool until ready to serve.

Pie Dough

20 minutes, plus chilling. Makes 2 crusts.

2 2/3 cups (11½ ounces) all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon table salt 18 tablespoons (2 sticks plus 2 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cold, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 4 to 6 tablespoons ice water In a large bowl, stir together the flour and the salt, then add the butter. Working quickly with your fingertips or a pastry blender, mix the dough until most of mixture resembles a coarse meal, with the rest in small (roughly pea-sized) lumps. Drizzle 4 tablespoons of ice water evenly over the mixture and gently stir with a fork until incorporated. Gently squeeze a small handful: it should hold together without crumbling apart. If it doesn’t, add more ice water, 1/2 tablespoon at a time, stirring 2 or 3 times after each addition until it comes together. (If you overwork the mixture or add too much water, the pastry will be tough.)

Turn the dough out onto a clean work surface and divide into several portions. With the heel of your hand, smear each portion once in a forward motion on the work surface to help distribute the fat. Gather the smeared dough together and form it, rotating it on the work surface, into 2 disks. Chill, wrapped in plastic wrap, until firm, at least 1 hour.

Beef, cheese, poblano and beer form addictive burger

The ancestor of this recipe was a beloved burger on the menu of a bar where I was a cook back in my college days.

Working on a flattop grill (the same surface used in diners to cook hash browns), we’d top the burger with a special mix of veggies, top the veggies with a slice of American cheese, douse the whole concoction with beer, then cover it with a dome lid and steam the burger until the cheese melted.

It was addictive – and I don’t even like beer.

This recipe repurposes that burger with fresher ingredients and sharp cheddar. I call for ground chuck because it’s not too lean. The higher percentage of fat makes the burger juicier and more flavorful. Whenever you add fat to a recipe, it’s just going to taste better.

The poblanos are roasted for three reasons: to soften the chili’s texture, to make it easier to remove the tough peel and to develop a slight char taste.

I recommend roasting them under the broiler, but if you have gas burners,

you can place them right on top of a burner and char them over a low flame. If you want to skip this step to save time, you can swap in canned chilies instead.

These burgers need to be cooked on a burner on top of the stove – not on a grill. That’s so the juices that accumulate in the bottom of the skillet can be deglazed with beer and turned into a “sauce” to pour onto the burger at the end. If you’re a beer lover, choose a robust brand, which will amp up the burger’s flavor.

I can’t pretend this is a low-cal dish, but I do think it’s a justifiable (and delicious) fall indulgence.

Chili Cheeseburgers Steamed in Beer Start to finish: 1 hour (40 active) Servings: 6

1 large poblano (about 4 ounces) or one 4.5-ounce can chilies 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided plus extra oil for oiling the chili 2 cups sliced onion salt and black pepper 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon minced garlic

1½ tablespoons minced chipotle in adobo 1½ pounds ground chuck, divided into 6 patties (shape them so that all of them will fit into one large skillet without touching) 6 ounces sliced cheddar cheese 1/2 cup beer 6 toasted buns Preheat the broiler. Lightly oil the chili on all sides and set it on a shelf about 4 inches from the heat source. Using tongs, turn the poblano often, until the skin is blackened on all sides, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Transfer the chili to a bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap, and set it aside until it is cool enough to handle. When the chili is cool, peel and seed it and cut it into thin strips: put it back in the bowl.

In a large skillet cook the onion in 1 tablespoon of the oil, over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion is golden brown, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the cooked onion to the bowl with the chili and add salt and pepper to taste. Wipe out the skillet and set it aside.

In a small bowl stir together the mayonnaise, garlic and chipotle.

In the skillet, heat the remaining oil over medium high heat. Season the burgers on

both sides with salt and pepper and add them to the skillet. Reduce the heat to medium and cook them for 2 minutes a side.

Transfer the burgers to a plate and pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the pan.

Return the burgers to the pan and top each burger with one-sixth of the chili mixture, followed by a slice of cheese.

Pour the beer into the pan on top of the burgers and cover the pan with a lid. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let the burgers steam for 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to the desired degree of doneness (you can nick and peek inside one).

While the burgers are cooking, spread chipotle mayonnaise onto the bottom and top of each bun. Transfer the cooked cheeseburgers to the bottom half of the buns. Turn up the heat in the skillet and boil the liquid until it thickened.

Spoon some of the reduced cooking liquid over each burger. Top with the remaining bun half.

Debbie Dwyer, preschool director, has been a part of the school for 20 years. Cindy McGee, pre-K teacher, celebrates 19 years at CCA this year.

Rhonda Cantrell, pre-K teacher, has been at Cornerstone for 16 years, and pre-K teacher Dianna Pauling has been there 14 years.

BRIEF KC offering free veterinary assistant info sessions

Kishwaukee College Continuing Education will offer several information sessions for community members interested in exploring the veterinary assistant program. All sessions are free and open to the public, however, space is limited and advance registration is required. The sessions are at: • 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 15 at Bethany Animal Hospital; • 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 22 at the DeKalb Public Library; • 6 to 7 p.m. Nov. 29 at the FlaggRochelle Public Library; • 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Sycamore Public Library.

Veterinary assistants are critical members of a veterinary staff who have been trained to assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with medical procedures on sick and injured animals. Veterinary assistants also are trained in examination, customer relations and veterinary hospital office procedures.

This program is designed for anyone who is interested in becoming a valuable member of a veterinary team.

32 Narrowed vessels cause intestinal angina Dear Dr. K: For months I’ve experienced severe pain in my abdomen after eating. After excluding a number of other conditions, my doctor diagnosed intestinal angina. I’ve heard of angina related to the heart – is this the same?

Dear Reader: The underlying process is the same for intestinal and cardiac angina.

Let me explain.

Cholesterol-filled plaque and clots can lurk in blood vessels throughout the body.

The arteries that supply the heart are by far the most common hiding place. But arteries elsewhere in the body also can become severely narrowed by plaque.

Clogged vessels in the legs or arms can lead to limb pain during exercise, because the nearby muscles don’t get enough blood to work properly. This is called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. People with PAD also are at risk for narrowing in the arteries that feed the intestines.

Your digestive system ordinarily gets about 20 to 25 percent of the blood pumped out by your heart. After you eat, blood flow to the stomach and intestines almost doubles. But if plaque causes severe narrowing, not enough of that extra blood reaches the intestines when they’re working to digest food. People usually don’t develop symptoms unless at least two of the three major arteries to the bowel are involved.

These narrowed vessels cause intestinal angina. The classic symptom is pain in the abdomen, just above the navel, that occurs about 30 minutes after eating. This pain happens every time you eat, not just some of the time. People often describe the pain as an aching sensation that lasts from one to two hours. Other possible symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Intestinal angina symptoms are so unpleasant people with this condition often are afraid to eat.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Treating intestinal angina means restoring blood flow to the intestines. In most cases, doctors thread a catheter (a thin plastic tube) through several arteries until the tip of the catheter is at the site of the blockage.

Then they insert a tiny metal mesh tube (stent) to prop open the artery. (This is very similar to the procedure performed to treat narrowed coronary arteries.) But just like stented coronary arteries, intestinal arteries are prone to re-narrowing. Some people with more advanced disease need surgery.

In rare cases, a blood clot may completely block an intestinal artery. This causes intense abdominal pain that can last for several hours. A complete blockage requires emergency surgery. Otherwise, the part of the intestine that is downstream from the blockage begins to die. If it is not promptly corrected, the condition often is fatal. The parallels to angina of the heart and a full heart attack are clear.

A doctor colleague of mine began to experience abdominal pain after every meal.

At first, he thought it was heartburn. But he began to wonder if it was intestinal angina.

Then one night he was awakened by more severe pain in the same part of his abdomen.

He hadn’t eaten in seven hours. Fortunately, he realized what was happening, went to the emergency room and then promptly to surgery. They removed a part of his intestine that had died and saved his life.

The woman you saw could have been homeless, drug-addicted, short on money or mentally ill. She also could have fled an abusive husband or partner. That’s why it’s inappropriate to scold or lecture a panhandler.

For Children In Irvine, California Dear Looking: It’s wrong to assume anything

I went to the market the other day, and there was a woman sitting on the sidewalk with two children – a boy who looked to be about 6 and a girl about 2. She was holding a sign asking for help ($). I wanted so badly to say something to her about what a poor example she was setting for her children by begging. It made me angry because I imagine she’s using her children as “props” to evoke sympathy.

This is a nice area. I would think she could better present herself to her children by looking for a job. What would have been an appropriate comment to make to her that might help put her on the right track to show her children how to grow up to be responsible people who work for a living? – Looking Out

How should South play in four hearts? West leads the diamond 10. East wins the first trick with his queen, cashes the diamond ace, and shifts to the club two. (What was East’s stronger defense?)

In the auction, North’s two-notrump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise: four-plus trumps, at least game-forcing values and, usually, no singleton or void. (Otherwise, he would have made a splinter bid.)

South, with a minimum and no shortage either, jumped to four hearts.

South has to play the trump suit without loss. This would normally involve taking a finesse. A priori, the chance that East has the king is 50 percent and West a singleton king only about 6.25 percent. But sometimes those numbers are worthless.

South would like to know who holds the spade ace. He should lead a spade, taking a slight risk that East will get a club ruff. Here, East produces the ace. Then South should know that West must have the heart king. If East had that card -- and a total of 13 high-card points -- he would have opened the bidding. Declarer should play a heart to his ace.

East would have done better to shift to a trump at trick three, before South could find out who had the spade ace. Then surely declarer would have gone with the odds and taken the finesse.
